A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome back to the celebration and recap of this year’s American Advertising Awards. We celebrated this year’s winners at our annual American Advertising Awards Event, enjoyed a night with colleagues and friends and honored the hard work brought forth by the outstanding individuals and businesses in this great area. The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is a national nonprofit organization, dedicated to the promotion and protection of the interests of advertising and public relations. Chartered nationally, and powered locally, our club is run by a volunteer Board of Directors who generously dedicate their time, talents and resources. Our goal is to provide exceptional programming and lively networking opportunities for anyone personally or professionally. Annually, our local club hosts the first tier of the National American Advertising Awards Program. This program is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative creative competition. It recognizes all forms of advertising; in all varieties of media; created by all sizes and types of entrants; and from all over the country. More than 40,000 total entries are entered and judged annually. The American Advertising Awards are unique among advertising creative competitions. It is the only competition that includes three arduous levels of competition. Entries are first judged at the local level through competitions organized by nearly 200 local ad clubs affiliated with the AAF. Winners from the local level advance to the second level of judging and participate in one of 15 district competitions. After district winners are selected, they advance to the third level of judging – the national finals. A student competition is also held concurrently with the professional competition and is the largest student advertising competition of its kind. American Advertising Awards winners truly represent the best of the best. It is the size of the idea that matters most, not the size of the organization that created the work, nor the size of the budget behind it. This distinction elevates the American Advertising Awards above virtually every other advertising competition. The American Advertising Awards is just one of many opportunities available to members of AAF Dubuque. Throughout the year, the organization offers fun networking events such as Adwars, a Putt-Putt tournament, social events and more. From agencies to banks, universities and publishing companies, our members come from various industries with skills that make them Dubuque’s top advertising, creative, media, public relations and marketing professionals. Combined with prime networking opportunities, educational luncheons and more, AAF Dubuque attracts business professionals from nearly every industry. All of this is only possible with the help of our wonderful board members, committee members, community support, local businesses and our sponsors throughout the year. I truly appreciate each of you sharing your passion, time, talent and energy to support AAF’s Dubuque mission. It is with your commitment that AAF Dubuque will continue to grow and educate in the years to come. With Gratitude, Ashley Ayala President, AAF Dubuque

The Silver Medal Award was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

The AAF Silver Medal Award Program was established to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to the advertising industry. Annually, AAF Dubuque bestows this honor upon outstanding members of the local advertising community. The Silver Medal recipient is selected by a panel of judges from each local club. Judges use the following criteria when making their selections: - Contribution to His/Her Company - Creative Ability in their field - Contributions to the General Advancement of Advertising and - Contributions to the Community. We had some great nominations this year, and really, any of them would be deserving. After delegation with the panel of judges, we are thrilled to honor one of those nominees tonight who exceeds all the criteria previously mentioned.

Katie Mihalakis The Buzz Creative Group

This years nominee has 15+ professional years of experience in the creative and advertising field. This individual motivates others by setting high standards for communication, productivity and professionalism throughout their company and team. He, or she, provides team members the tools and training needed to reach individuals and teams full potential and makes all team members feel like they are part of the team and their efforts are always appreciated. Contributions to the Community: - Volunteer at Bellevue High School for the Bellevue Future Business Leaders of America - Serves as Judge at Bellevue Future Business Leaders of America advertising competitions. - Supports student internships, field trips to barn (if you haven’t seen – this is their beautiful office out in St. Dontaus) and job shadowing. - Focus on strategic growth of the Buzz Creative Group. The goal is to add additional contracted accounts which in turn leads to creating 3-4 additional jobs. - And she graciously dedicated her time to the support of AAF as serving as a Judge for the 2016-17 Student Addy Competition. Creator and acts as driving force of the Buzz ‘Helping Hive’ Initiatives consisting of: - Partnering with the University of Iowa to make Christmas cards - volunteer at American Red Cross blood donation - logo development for local businesses - PushUps4Parkinsons social movement - inspirational Rock painting distributed around DBQ community - And Live Like Jack donation and delivery of food items. Outside of work she also supports Women’s Leadership Group and is a Girl Scout Troop Leader.

AMERICAN ADVERTISING FEDERATION OF DUBUQUE

Member of the Year The AAF Dubuque Member of the Year Award is given to an individual who has worked hard over the year to be a driving force behind the American Advertising Federation of Dubuque.

Joining the board in 2018 this nominee started their role as our Public Service Director. Eager to get involved and familiarize himself with the board he showed up with a great attitude – soaking in everything AAF, offering ideas, and volunteering his time. From even the second meeting, it was apparent that anything he is involved with, he will go above and beyond. It was obvious, this nominee was going to be a major asset to our club! Diving into his role as Public Service Director, he donated his time and talents to a local non-profit organization to help the organization reach its advertising and marketing goals. The selected nonprofit receives marketing assistance from area marketing and advertising professionals including logo development, media planning, copy writing and more! Exceeding expectations, this individual recognized a potential to help get the students involved – a task we had been brainstorming as a board over the past couple years.

Pat McCullough McCullough Creative

Not only did he get the students involved, but morphed it into a student mentorship program. He enlisted the help of his coworkers and hosted mock interviews to form a committee. He put together a team of students consisting of an account/project manager, a creative director/writer, two designers, and a PR/ marketing strategist. He hosted meetings, explained roles/responsibilities, and had practice discovery sessions in preparation in meeting with the client. Through these efforts and dedications, numerous students received real-life applicable experience, training and feedback. This individual also worked with our Programming and Education Directors to help gain student involvement for our Behind The Awards Luncheon – a lunch and learn where we review past AAAwards winners, and gear up for the upcoming AAAwards entries and tonight’s event. It’s obvious this deserving individual is passionate about students and developing upcoming professionals. He feels the biggest gap for students between classes and the real world is understanding the possibilities and how they can fit in.” He believes “The more they hear from other professionals about their different stepping stones, the more they can paint a picture of how they can get where they want to go.” Not only is this person a dedicated Board Member and AAF supporter, but is also a major asset to this community. Graduating from the University of Iowa with degrees in English and Psychology and completing his MBA in Business from Clarke University he continues to offer his time and talent outside the work environment. He serves on the City’s Art & Culture Initiative, is actively involved with Mentor Dubuque and was awarded Mentor of the Year. He also received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from Resources Unite in 2017. With the free time he may have left, he has a passion for off-road trail riding and belongs to Tri-States Stump Jumpers. He played 15 years of organized hockey and continues to play adult hockey weekly. He is currently the Business Manager at McCullough Creative and oversees all business functions of the company, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, information technology, human resources, estimates, and much more. He has experience with the company in heavy copy-editing and creation of original content, with the ability to absorb technical information for products and services across a variety of industries.
