A MESSAGE FROM The American Advertising Federation of Dubuque, President Welcome to this year’s Adventures in Advertising awards night! I am excited to share the results of the 2017 American Advertising Awards! With over 165 entries, both professional and students, we’ve completed another fantastic year of competition. It’s an honor to be involved with such a talented group of individuals. The level of creativity and professionalism shown in each entry is top notch. The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is a national nonprofit organization, promoting and protecting the interests of advertising and public relations. Locally, AAF Dubuque is the affiliate to the national organization and the American Advertising Awards. Annually, our organization hosts the first level of the American Advertising Awards competition for the greater Dubuque area. Winning entries are awarded Silver and Gold AAAwards and are eligible to advance and compete against others in the club’s 9th District competition. From there, district winners have the opportunity to move on to the national competition and ultimately be named the best in the business. Under the direction of the AAF Dubuque American Advertising Award Co-Chairs, Molly Christenson, Colleen Havens and past Co-Chair Stephone Schmitz, the AAF board, plus assistance from our many sponsors, this year’s competition and show is for the most creative in the industry, each have embarked on their own adventure in advertising. The Silver Medal and Member of the Year will also be awarded tonight to two very deserving individuals that have been a driving force behind AAF Dubuque, the Dubuque advertising community and active in the community. The American Advertising Awards is just one of many opportunities available to members of AAF Dubuque. Throughout the year, the organization offers fun networking events like the upcoming AdWars on Thursday, April 12 here at the Diamond Jo, a Putt-Putt Tournament and AAF After 5 social events. We also offer professional development through our member discounted luncheons, where we visit topics like social media, brand development, email marketing, small business marketing, panel discussions from local advertising experts and much more. There are also opportunities to get involved with committees and at the board level. The opportunities are endless for members of AAF Dubuque and with marketing being an ever-changing field, professional development is key to staying on top of your career. If you are not a member of this wonderful organization, then I highly encourage you to explore the benefits and attend one of our upcoming events that can be found on our website aafdbq.org. Finally, I want to thank each board member, committee member and community supporter for sharing your passion, time and energy to support AAF Dubuque’s mission. Without your commitment, this amazing event and many of the other great things we do as an organization would not be possible. If you feel inspired to join in the adventure tonight, we have placed paper on each table to create your own paper airplanes. Enjoy! Thank you! Lynne Hager President, AAF Dubuque

STUDENT JUDGES Jackson Cooper Gango Director of Photography - Co-Owner, DreamCatcher Productions Starting out in black and white photography on my grandfather’s old film camera, I grew up wanting to be a photojournalist. At some point between deciding to study computer engineering or photography, I discovered the moving image and was more akin to what I was after as an artist. My love of atmosphere and lighting then followed during my years attending school in Chicago. I let my passion drive my experience to give directors and producers confidence that my interpretation of their vision exceeds their expectations.

Jill Paisley Owner/Creative Director, Luckythirteen Design :: A Brand Design Studio Jill is the owner and creative director at Luckythirteen Design, a tiny design studio based in Dubuque. A UNI grad, Jill grew her experience throughout the state of Iowa as the designer at a small creative shop, an art director at a Des Moines ad agency, and as the creative director at Clarke University before taking Luckythirteen Design full-time nearly four years ago. Now back in her much-loved hometown, Jill loves the potential and energy of Dubuque and enjoys working with local businesses to help their marketing materials — believing that good design can energize everything from a small workspace to an entire community. Her full-service design studio specializes in helping businesses with the many aspects of their marketing, including establishing their overall brand identity, logo, print and web design. Her clients include many large and small Dubuque-area businesses and nonprofits, as well as some regional clients. Jill lives in the rolling hills just north of Dubuque with her husband and two boys, ages 5 and 2.

In 1968, The Beatles used the typeface in its famous animated classic Yellow Submarine. To fit the taste of advertisment in 1970’s New York, Victor Caruso furthered the typeface family adding an ITC version which was not faithful to the original design. To counter this unfaithfulness, Marc Schutz released a happy medium between the two fonts in 2006 called Neue Kabel.

RESTORE PUERTO RICO

During Hurricane Maria, about 80% of Puerto Rico’s agriculture was wiped out. Puerto Rico’s economy has been based on its agriculture for the last 400 years, focusing on sugar cane, tobacco and citrus fruits. It is also estimated that the island suffered a $780 million loss in agricultural yields. Puerto Rico only exports about 15% of its crops to begin with, showing how much they depend on their locally grown produce. Crops of banana, plantain and coffee were damaged the most by the storm.

AAF Member of the Year The AAF Dubuque Member of the Year Award is given to an individual who has worked hard over the year to be a driving force behind the American Advertising Federation of Dubuque. Nominees are active participants not only in club activities, but also in planning events and volunteering time. Our recipient this year, is true not only of these qualities, but many more. Joining the board in 2016 she started her role as the At-Large Chair. Eager to get involved and familiarize herself with the board she showed up with a great attitude – soaking in everything AAF, offering ideas, and volunteering her time to assist in various committees and tasks. It was obvious in the first year – this gal was going to be a major asset to our club!

Megan Corkery AppleWhite Dental Partners

Moving into her 2nd year on the board she took on a much larger role as Programmer. The aim of the programming committee is to track down captivating and engaging speakers who address diverse topics within the marketing and advertising industries. She Incorporated topics on growing a small business, blogging, and even featured a panel of five local winners from last year’s American Advertising Awards to talk about their creative adventure to their awardwinning pieces. Keeping our Programming fresh, and turning our usual luncheon into an evening event, she has secured an evening dedicated to the beautiful murals dressing up some of our downtown buildings. And yet, her contributions didn’t’ stop there. Our recipient has been a major contributor to this year’s American Advertising Awards and an integral part of it all coming together. One of the members who nominated her wrote, “She is always willing to assist and lend a helping hand. She constantly reaches out to offer help regardless of being asked. She represents our club in the highest regard with her passion and friendliness, making her a pleasure to work with.” A pleasure to work with indeed, she has spent the last six years as the Marketing Manager for Apple White Dental Partners. Marketing strategies and plans, managing budgets, analytics, trends and websites are just a few of the tasks that keep her busy at work and an obvious asset to any business. Volunteering her time and giving back to our community, she is also Co-Director of the Dubuque Diabetes Dash – a 5k that raises money for kids in Dubuque with juvenile diabetes.
