I know a young couple that have found roses amongst their thorns.

Over the last few years, they have been faced with significant health challenges. In the middle of all this, they have also had their home flooded, their car totaled, and have been trying to finish their educational goals. In 2020, a trip to the emergency room led to a diagnosis that would change their lives forever. They are amazing people and it hurt to watch them go through this. he Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is in full swing. This is the time of the year when you can take the opportunity to shop around for Medicare plans that might suite you better for next year. AEP runs until December 7 so if you haven’t had a chance to see what is out there, you still have time.

t’s really hard to believe that Thanksgiving is looming near. But it is— it’s also a reminder that time is fleeting and that I’m very blessed and grateful to live in a great community, surrounded by loving family, amazing friends, and so many wonderful clients. November is also the month designated as the time to recognize and thank all the men and women who have served, and are currently serving, our great country.

As I reflect on the past year with its trials and triumphs, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the traveling Wall That Heals exhibit that was here in Brighton in early September. It was the only Colorado stop on the 2021 tour, and having it here in our little community was amazing. I’m thankful to those who made it happen. It was a profound experience to move from panel to panel, seeing all those names of fellow Americans who lost their lives while serving our country.

The wall itself, with its deliberate and defining structural design, is absolutely breathtaking, and a very powerful reminder of how precious life is.

As we approach the holiday season with all the talk of supply chain shortages affecting holiday shopping, I would like to take this opportunity to put in a shameless plug for our community of terrific locally owned small businesses and artists. Their offerings are not stuck in ports waiting to be unloaded and shipped to stores. They are right here, part of our “collective community”. As I write this, it dawns on me that community is a word with a depth of meanings beyond a place or a group. It’s also a way of “being with each other” by seeking out the common ground, finding the bridges that bring us together—it’s about looking for the best in each other, and remembering that together, we are a stronger, better, and more resilient community, one which I am thankful, grateful, and blessed to be a part of.

Beyond Retirement: Consider Your Other Goals Offered by: T. Lloyd Worth

W

hen it comes to financial stability, people tend to focus on paying off debt and saving for retirement. In reality, many other financial goals beckon to individuals during their lifetime. Because of this, it’s important to look beyond retirement when setting targets, no matter how old you are.

Identify Future Objectives While it is never too early to start planning for retirement, waiting until you reach 65 years or older to truly live is a mistake many people come to regret. A number of exciting possibilities are waiting for you throughout your life: • Building an emergency fund • Creating and growing passive income • Starting a business • Owning a home • Becoming debt-free • Raising a family Consider Income Some people start their careers making six figures or more; this is rare. By about 25 years old, making $35,000 or so is a reasonable expectation. If your salary increases follow the historical rate and you have no major employment gaps, you could earn almost $2 million by the time you’re ready for retirement.

Without a doubt, $2 million is a lot of money. If you take a second look at the list of potential financial goals, however, it begins to lose its comparative value. For instance, the current cost of a starter home is anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000. Similarly, student loans are one of the biggest obstacles to a debt-free life. The average student loan debt is $29,800.

Create a Plan If you’re starting to feel discouraged, the good news is that money isn’t a static asset.

It has the potential to grow and do some of the work for you by creating passive income.

In fact, people who begin to invest in their future early can better position themselves in the pursuit of their retirement goals. You can employ several different strategies to help your money go further: • Designate a portion of raises: Instead of increasing living expenses to match any pay increases, try to retain the original budget as much as possible and invest the extra. Keep the same starter home you bought. Drive your present car for as long as possible.

• Start small: Not everyone is making $35,000 per year at age 25. Some people make significantly less throughout their earning years. The answer to this economic problem is to start small. Save $100 per month if you can and $10 per month if you can’t. It all adds up, especially when properly invested. In 10 years, $100 per month at a 6% annual return could potentially grow into $15,996. (This is a hypothetical example and is not representative of any specific situation. Your results will vary. The hypothetical rates of return used do not reflect the deduction of fees and charges inherent to investing.)

• Buy wisely: When you purchase a vehicle or buy a home, consider the maintenance cost and tax breaks. For instance, is it better to invest in solar panels than a new sunroom for your home? Likewise, consider the potential tax or economic benefits of a small electric vehicle or hybrid over a new mid-size SUV. • Make use of programs and incentives: There are many financial products and accounts available that could help you invest your money in a tax-efficient manner. These include HSA accounts, 401(k)s, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and 529 college savings plans. Taxes can have a big impact on passive income. It is important to manage their impact over a lifetime.

Reduce Debt The best time to start minimizing debt is before you take any on. This does not mean you should never buy anything on credit. It does imply wisdom in how you use debt.

Also, be wise about payment terms, interest rates and the types of debt.

Whenever possible, pay down that debt as quickly as you can. However, never become so focused on paying off debt that you neglect your savings. Take yet another look at the list of potential financial goals. There is more to life then repaying big corporations.

was around November of 1986 and my Karate Teacher (Sensei Luis Chiock) had just returned from coaching the Peruvian National Team at the World Karate Championship in Sidney, Australia. I remember him wearing the Peruvian emblem on the left chest of his Karate uniform, and I was so inspired by it. I thought, “wow, my Sensei is the coach of the national team.”

However, to my surprise, about a year later he left the coaching position, and returned to teaching full time at our dojo. A few years later, I asked him why he left the prestigious coaching job at the national team. He said, “It is a very thankless job, you may pour your heart out to the athletes, but one seldom gets any credit or thanks. The athletes usually credit their success to their own training and their particular karate teachers. So I’d rather focus on my own students.” (I am paraphrasing since it’s been about three decades since that conversation took place).

For some reason that stuck with me through the years. It made me think about many things, such as how many people have jobs that are thankless, such as teachers, nurses, policemen, foster parents, etc., but they stick with it because it’s their calling and they love what they do.

It also reminds me that, at times, I may take someone’s help for granted and fail to properly show my gratitude. So I try to be more aware; aware of my duty to at least, say “thank you for what you’ve done for me”, however large or small.

My Sensei knew that focusing on his students was his most fulfilling calling, because his students were grateful. I know the feeling too well, because my most treasured awards are the handwritten notes I often get from current and former students. Their gratitude is what makes my job worth every minute spent on and off the mats with them.

So I ask you, can you make someone’s job worth their while? A simple thank you note, a word of encouragement, or a quick phone call. That’s all it takes. So take the time, now, to tell your teacher, your boss, mom, dad, friend, uncle, etc… “Thank you! I appreciate you!” It may be the best gift they get all day, week, or even that whole month. And while you may think they already know… it is always great to hear.

To all those folks who put in the daily work without much recognition, police officers on the late shifts, teachers grading papers at home, a parent caring for a sick child, and many nameless others, from all of us who benefit from your efforts, thank you for all you do!

ith the holiday season approaching, you may be considering making year-end charitable gifts to help those less fortunate or to support worthy causes. When making charitable gifts, you should put together an effective strategy to maximize the benefit to the charity, reduce the amount going to the IRS, and lower your cost of giving.

Give smart. Look at making a contribution of an asset that has appreciated in value. Giving appreciated stock directly to the charity avoids your tax on the gain. You can get credit for the full amount of the gift, the charity does not pay any tax, and less goes to the IRS. Your cost of the gift is reduced.

The Standard Deduction for married couples could be as high as $27,800 in 2021. If you don’t itemize your deductions, there may not be a tax benefit to your charitable giving. If so, consider making the gift directly from your IRA to the charity. It counts as an annual required distribution, and you don’t have to report the transfer as income. This effectively makes the gift deductible even if your deductions do not exceed the Standard Deduction.

Also, consider making all of your charitable gifts every other year. Bunching your annual gifts together can put the total over the Standard Deduction that year. You can also give several years to a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) this year.

You then direct your regular annual gifting out of the DAF and make no gifts during the following years. The charity gets the same amount each year, but you get to take the deduction for the larger amount this year. If you’re not sure what’s best, contact your tax advisor.

I recently celebrated my 19th year in the insurance industry and I couldn’t agree with that statement more. Some of you know that I started out my career as a claims adjuster who investigated accidents with moderate to severe and catastrophic injuries. ith the first cases of the flu (influenza) virus being reported in Colorado this season, it’s more important than ever to get the vaccine for you and your children. Read on for some quick facts about the vaccine.

1. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months.

There are two options for the flu vaccine: the inactivated vaccine, given as a shot, or the live-attenuated vaccine, given as a nasal spray. These are considered equally effective. The nasal spray is approved for children over age 2.

3. This year, the flu vaccine covers four influenza strains: two influenza A and two influenza B strains.

4. Children between 6 months and 8 years old who have never received the flu vaccine require two doses of the vaccine, given at least 4 weeks apart.

5. The flu vaccine is especially important for children under the age of 5 or with chronic health issues such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes, as they are at higher risk for complications from the flu.

6. It is safe to receive the flu vaccine at the same time as other vaccines.

7. Children with egg allergies can receive the flu vaccine.

Entries wanted for Brighton’s Annual Festival of Lights Parade Offered by: City of Brighton Communications

et’s see those floats dazzle in the return of the Festival of Lights Parade in downtown Brighton this December! The City of Brighton is accepting entries for its 26th Annual Festival of Lights Parade in downtown Brighton. Entry categories include equine/livestock, floats, motorized vehicles, musical acts and bicycles.

In years past, the parade featured more than 75 fully-lit entries and beautifully highlighted the “Hometown Holiday Tradition” theme. This year’s parade returns to this tradition after the pandemic forced the City to pivot to a Santa Claus drive through Brighton last year.

“We are thrilled to bring back this beloved tradition for Brighton this holiday season,” said Gary Montoya, Events and Downtown Initiative Manager.

Set to start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, the nighttime parade is an event that all ages get to enjoy. The Festival of Lights features local groups, organizations, businesses and families who will share the holiday spirit with the community. The parade starts traveling south on North Main Street and ends at City Hall. This event is sponsored by the City of Brighton and is free to the public to attend. More details to come when they become available.

On

my grandfather’s eighth birthday, November 11, 1918, the end of World War I commenced as the allied forces signed a ceasefire agreement with Germany. (The war did not officially end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed the following year.) That date later served as a holiday known as Armistice Day for many years in the United States, and is still celebrated in European countries. Following World War II, Armistice Day become Veteran’s Day in the United States and was created to celebrate all veterans. For a time, the date for celebration was changed to the 4th Monday in October, but was changed back to its original date of November 11th in 1978 and has been celebrated since then.

Both of my grandfathers, and both of my wife’s grandfathers were veterans who served in different capacities during WWII. Their lives and service have had a lasting impact on our family. As I have written previously, my wife’s grandfather lost a leg stepping on a landmine at Normandy following the D-Day invasion. This led to a lifetime of adaptation for him as he worked to provide for his family while wearing numerous different prosthetic legs. Due in part to the crudeness and imperfect fit of the devices, these adaptations led to other physical problems that plagued him the rest of his life.

In 1620, a group of settlers looking for a place to be free to worship and live their beliefs traveled to the New World. These people, later known as pilgrims, had to adapt to a completely different environment, devoid of the familiar surroundings of England. They had to become acquainted with new foods and had to learn new methods to grow unfamiliar crops. Their success, due entirely to the kindness of the natives who taught them how to farm and survive in the new land, led to a feast and celebration of thanks that is historically recognized as the first thanksgiving.

Adaptation is a wonderful thing we as humans often do to overcome different challenges.

Individuals with hearing loss and tinnitus often find ways to deal with it, such as turning up the TV louder, asking people to repeat, and so forth. Unfortunately, these adaptations do little to address the root of imperfect hearing. As such, these adaptations increase the likelihood of problems later in life, such a dementia. This is one reason it is recommended to treat hearing loss as soon as possible. Thankfully, we have moved past the crude hearing devices of the past, and with today’s advanced hearing aid technology, we can more effectively treat hearing loss and tinnitus.

ost buyers want a move-in ready home that’s clean, updated, and functional, and they’re willing to pay more to get what they want. If you’re a seller refreshing your home for resale, or an investor intent on selling a remodeled home, you should know which updates will impress today’s homebuyers the most. Not all improvements will provide a return on investment, but the cumulative effect will definitely result in better offers from homebuyers.

1. Update the finishes. Get rid of popcorn ceilings. If you have wood floors, pull up the old carpet and repair and refinish the wood. Update countertops in quartz or stone, which adds value. New appliances are always appreciated, especially if they have the latest features like induction stovetops.

2. Reconvert the conversions. Conversions are usually awkward, such as garages turned into living spaces. The elevations are rarely the same, the driveway dead-ends, and there’s little protection for vehicles. If you’re selling a home that already has a converted garage, offer to reconvert on request as a bargaining tool.

3. Paint neutrally. Nothing improves a home like fresh paint. If you’re not sure which neutral is best – gray, beige, white, or soft blue or greens, ask for opinions. A good source is your local paint store.

4. Fix obvious problems. Buyers will open all drawers and doors, so fix the broken lock, the running toilet, the leaky faucet, the busted sprinkler head, the wobbly ceiling fan, the loose doorknob, picture hanger holes, and so on.

Deep clean corners and touch up railings that may have dents and dings and chipped paint.

5. Say “Welcome!” with curb appeal. Updated landscaping is one of the first positive things your buyers will see from the street. Fresh modern paint on the front door, a new welcome mat, potted flowers, shiny new porch lights all show pride of ownership – something you want your buyers to feel, too.

Inexpensive updates in lieu of the more durable and sustainable materials may cause buyers to wonder where else you cut costs. Here are five cheap “improvements” that won’t help you sell your home.

Single coat paint – A single coat of paint can leave a ghost of the previous color.

It also never delivers the rich color and texture of carefully applied second coats.

Peel and Stick tiles– Nothing says cheap like peel and stick tile for floors or backsplashes. Yes, you can remove them, but real tile wears and looks better.

Faux Granite – What makes granite beautiful and the focal point of a kitchen or bath is the natural veins and spots of color. While some laminates and quartz closely copy granite, you’re better off choosing a solid neutral color for your countertop replacement and putting the wow factor somewhere else, like a decorative tile backsplash.

Acrylic one-piece shower/tub – It may look clean and new, but you don’t want your bathroom to look like it belongs in a motel. It’s disconcerting to feel the floor flex when you step in or out of the tub. Spend the money for a new porcelain tub, freshly grouted tile, and a contemporary glass door.

Painted outdated cabinets – Even a good paint job doesn’t update worn, outdated cabinets enough to impress homebuyers. Old cabinets don’t have the easy sliding drawers, pull-out shelving, and hidden hinges that are standard features of modern cabinets.
