One huge reason to celebrate is we’re coming to a time where we can gather with a safer feeling due to the availability of vaccines and a slowing of Covid-19’s progression. It’s exciting to see restaurants are able to offer more indoor dining. We’re welcoming back the opening of our Oasis Water Park, and our Summerfest Festival coming early June.

Toward the end of the month, many families celebrate graduations and will look forward to the re-opening of schools and colleges in the fall. It will be a welcome change and many students will prepare for the next stage of their education.

The Plan G is very similar to the Plan F. The Plan G functions the same as the Plan F. What I mean by that is all Medicare Supplements pay second to Original Medicare. The doctors who currently take your Plan F, will also take your Plan G because Original Medicare is the primary payer. Or for lack of a better term, Original Medicare is your “network”.

The difference in cost for the Plan G vs the Plan F is pretty simple too. The Plan G leaves you responsible for the Medicare Part B annual deductible. This deductible resets every January and is determined by the government, not the insurance company. Currently this is $203. For many of the people I have been working with, the amount of money they save in monthly premium is much more than the annual deductible.

Life expectancy is increasing, so retirement may last longer than you expect. According to the Social Security Administration, the average life expectancy for a 60 year-old man is about 83 (86 for a woman). Individuals should consider their health, family history and other personal factors to help determine life expectancy. A comprehensive life expectancy calculator can be found at www.livingto100.com, which takes into account numerous factors you may not be considering—including your weekly bacon consumption! Other factors, such as your stress level and marital status, help provide a more personalized life expectancy.

You’ll need to fund that long time

These days, people expect more in retirement. They want to be comfortable and enjoy travelling, visiting family, pursuing hobbies and volunteer opportunities, as well as completing their “bucket list.” How much do you need to fund a long retirement? The rule of thumb is that you’ll need to replace about 75%-80% of your preretirement income. Social Security will help fund part of your income needs. However, the earliest you can take it is age 62, and that benefit will be reduced versus if you wait until your full retirement age to start taking your benefit (currently age 67 for those born in 1960 or later). Your personal savings and retirement account will have to make up the difference. You can begin taking retirement plan distributions without an early withdrawal penalty starting at age 59½. However, financial advisors recommend not taking more than a 4%-5% annual withdrawal from your account if you want it to last 20 years or more.

Don’t forget about healthcare

For most people, employer-sponsored healthcare benefits end when you leave work.

Most companies provide COBRA coverage for a limited period of time after workers leave, but that tends to be expensive and often more costly than individual plans. Happy Mothers Day! Offered by: Colorado Karate Club

As

I sit in my office waiting for our first class of the day, I’m looking out toward the front window of the school. There, I see running toward the door, this tiny four year old girl, Vivian, her hair made out in pigtails, all dressed up in her Karate uniform and impeccable from head to toe. Walking a few steps behind, with a big smile, is mom carrying her daughter’s karate belt and water bottle. With great effort Vivian opens the front door to let her mom in, and as they both walk into the school, I can hear the excited little girl talking mom’s ear off about something I could not understand, but which was obviously very important to her.

I was caught by the simplicity and purity of their interaction. The child, completely reliant on mom and obviously well cared for, and in turn the child finding a way to show her appreciation by opening and holding the door, then continue to pour her heart out to mom, and she patiently listened and smiled.

Not sure why, but it made me reflect upon the relationships we all have with our mothers. How wonderful would it be if we could always maintain that child-like innocence toward our parents, and especially toward mom.

I see a lot of moms come into our Karate school, some bring their toddlers to class, some their teenage son or daughter, others are grandparents and even aunts that have taken on a mother’s role. Each family has its own individual story, unique to itself, but the common thread among them, is the love and care these women have shown, and continue to show for the children under their wing, day in and day out.

As I grow older, I also realize that this time it is my turn to listen to mom, my chance to take her places, and to let her know that I will always care for her. If you still have your mom, I hope you will do likewise.

To all the mothers, my great respect and admiration for all the work, sacrifice, dedication, and love you have poured into us, your children. I only hope that we can repay you, even in a small way, by being the men and women you hoped we’d become. Happy Mother’s Day!

hen Bill and Jane learned of Bill’s illness, they sought legal advice. The lawyer told them to put everything in joint tenancy, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals.

Bill’s primary objective was to protect Jane after he died. Under Bill’s plan, their savings, his life insurance, and the home would be put in trust. This would protect the assets for Jane and help Jane protect her own assets as well.

After Bill’s death, Jane began volunteer work to keep her mind off her loss and it became a fulfilling passion. She met David. They connected immediately, and she fell in love. He proposed. She accepted. Her family noticed that his focus suddenly turned toward a keen interest in her finances. Blindly in love, she did not.

Bill’s plan left his assets in trust for Jane. A requirement of receiving benefits was that upon remarriage she must obtain a prenuptial agreement protecting her assets. The assets Bill left her were protected, but she needed to take action to protect her own assets. David was enraged when she told him that she was required to have a prenuptial agreement to preserve the assets for her children.

Realizing that half of the assets were held in trust, and that a prenup would prevent him from receiving the balance upon her death, David lost interest in Jane. While Jane was sad, she also had a comforting feeling that Bill was still protecting her even after his death. Jane had wondered if the planning she and Bill had done was worth the effort. All doubts were now gone.

he road to financial security, like many long journeys toward important goals, can be filled with ups and downs.

The financial markets can be volatile, shaking up your short-term investment results, and illness or downsizing may temporarily disrupt your career – and your earnings.

In fact, just 46% of adults feel financially stable, according to a survey by Morning Consult and Edward Jones. Still, there’s much you can do to gain stability – and you can chart your progress by marking three important milestones: Building a foundation – You need to base your financial stability on a strong foundation, which means you must start accumulating the necessary resources. Start by creating an emergency fund, which can help you deal with unexpected costs, such as an expensive car repair, without taking on additional debt. Try to put away anywhere from about $500 to one month’s worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account – one that’s separate from an account you use for your everyday spending. Later on, you’ll want to expand this emergency fund, but, for now, even this amount can help.

You can also take other steps to build your financial foundation. Try to put in enough to your health savings account (HSA) and your 401(k) to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And if you can, pay down high-interest, nondeductible debts.

Gaining stability – Continue to build on the momentum from the “foundation” milestone by ramping up your savings and investments. For starters, build your emergency fund so it contains one and a half to two months’ worth of living expenses. Also, set a goal to save perhaps 10% to 15% of your gross income, including employer matches, in your 401(k) or similar retirement account. If you can’t reach this level yet, do the best you can now and increase your contributions over time, as your salary goes up.

If the monthly debt payments are straining your budget, consider paying them down even if they have lower interest rates.

Reaching independence – The final milestone toward achieving financial stability is marked by a feeling of independence – knowing you are taking the steps necessary, and putting a strategy in place, to allow you to reach your financial goals.

Work to build a full three to six months’ worth of expenses in your emergency fund, which will offer even greater protection against being forced to tap into long-term investments, such as your IRA and 401(k), to pay for unanticipated expenses. Plus, having a sizable emergency fund gives you room to consider making moves such as taking a sabbatical, switching careers or taking time off to care for a loved one.

And, while you’re still working, save enough for the type of retirement lifestyle you desire. Even though your debt may be manageable at this point, it may still be source of stress. If so, continue paying it down. The less you owe, the more you can put away for retirement.

Achieving these milestones can help you gain the financial stability and flexibility to live life on your terms.

ith warmer days approaching, families will be spending more time around water. Drowning and near-drowning are leading causes of injury-related death and emergency room visits, with risks highest in children under the age of 4 and adolescent males. In children under the age of 4, unsupervised, unexpected access to water is the major factor in these preventable accidents.

While pools, and large bodies of water carry risks, drowning is possible in small amounts of standing water, including in buckets, toilets, etc. Water safety has many components, including but not limited to the ability to swim. Whenever possible, children should be introduced to the water at a young age. Lessons can benefit children as young as 1, but a healthy respect for water safety is just as important. An adult should always be in the water and within arms reach of a child who is unable to swim. Judicious use of life jackets should be encouraged, especially in large bodies of water, even for proficient swimmers.

It is important, however, to ensure that life jackets do not provide a false sense of security for individuals who do not know how to swim. Barriers around swimming pools should be secured when pools are not in use.

Children should be taught to stay away from water without a responsible adult present, and nobody should be in the water without someone outside of the water whose job it is to lifeguard. Learn CPR. Have a fun and safe summer.

Tips for Hiking with Kids This Summer Offered by: Abby Hughes, M.D.- Brighton Pediatrics, PC

E

arly summer is the perfect time to hike as a family! Hiking with children can involve some flexibility and patience. However, if you keep in mind that “the journey is the destination,” it can be fun for kids to explore and learn about nature along the way. The basics of hiking are always important: bring fluids and snacks, dress in layers, bring gear such as a first aid kit, use sun protection, apply insect repellant, and make sure to have a way to navigate such as the GPS on your phone.

Hiking tips by age group: · Infants: swaddle in front until about 6 months of age before switching to a backpack-style carrier. Cover your baby with sunscreen and a broad brimmed hat to protect from the sun. Pack formula (if formula feeding), diapers, foldable changing mat, and waste bags in case there are no trash cans on the hike. · Toddlers: look for safe places on the hike for them to explore and try not to venture too far from the trailhead in case they want to be carried back to the car! the state eases COVID-19 restrictions, the City of Brighton is excited to announce the return of Summerfest and the reopening of the Oasis Family Aquatic Park in the coming months.

Summerfest, the City’s largest community festival, is set to return to Carmichael Park on Saturday, June 5, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Ahead of this date, the City is seeking vendors and sponsorships for the festival. Events will include familyfriendly activities, businesses and organizations, live music and more. All activities and concerts at Summerfest are free to the community. Interested vendors and sponsors should contact Susan O’Connor, Event Coordinator at soconnor@brightonco.gov. The deadline for vendor and sponsorship applications is Friday, May 7.

COVID-19 guidelines at the time will apply. If COVID-19 restrictions push back this event, Summerfest will be held Saturday, Sept. 18. here is nothing like a postcard-fresh paint job on your home to make it look and feel brand new again, but it is unlikely you will need a new coat of paint every year. So how do you know when it is time to repaint? Let’s walk through some of the biggest signs that it’s time to break out the buckets and brushes.

The Purpose of Paint

Although paint is nice to look at, and the color you choose definitely tells a story and lends a mood to the whole neighborhood, paint serves another very important function as a waterproof barrier. For many homes, especially those that are older, there is very little standing between the siding and the living space; this is why having a good paint really matters. Paint waterproofs your siding, and it helps prevent moisture from crossing from the outdoors inward. This, in turn, helps slow the damage time brings, like wood rot and damage from insects drawn to a moist environment. So even though it is a lovely thing to look at, paint is really one of your best defenses against the elements.

Painting is not limited to wooden siding, though. You can also paint many types of siding considered non-paintable with the right kind of preparation and primer. So, if your house is covered in a horrific color of vinyl siding, all hope is not lost.

How to Tell It is Time to Paint

Knowing when it is time to paint your house is as much an art as a science. There are things you can look for that indicate the time is coming near, but you’ll also need to balance that with the expense and effort involved. Here are a few clear indicators to watch: • There is chipping paint. Most people know that chipping paint is a sign it is probably about time to start considering a paint job. But there is a fine line between a little bit of acceptable flaking and serious chipping. If

you are only noticing a few very small flakes falling off here and there, you should be working on picking a new color, but you don’t necessarily need to stop everything to get to painting. On the other hand, if big chips of paint are shedding off in multiple places, you have probably waited too long.

Your waterproofing is failing. If your paint no longer keeps water from soaking into your siding, and instead it seems to be absorbing more water, your waterproofing has failed. Generally, you want water to bead up on your siding, then work its way down and onto the ground. If the paint is so far gone that your siding is soaking up rainwater, a paint job is needed ASAP. Waiting risks further, more serious damage.

There is damage. Visible siding damage is a good sign it’s time to paint.

After all, after you’ve fixed the holes in the siding created by woodpeckers, or by falling trees during storms, you’ll want to ensure the paint matches.

Sometimes you can get away with just painting that side of the house, but large patches or siding replacements will usually not match existing paint, even if you use the same bucket. UV light breaks down the pigments quickly; just how quickly depends on the colors you have chosen.

Are you ready for a change? You can paint your house just because you hate the color. It is totally legit and it can be a much easier process to just paint it than to wait and deal with damage or worn out paint. Just make sure you are preparing the surface just like you would for a coat of paint meant to be a repair so it will adhere properly.

or many years we have received varying scam calls on both our business and personal phone lines. Recently we have seen an uptick in the calls and some days get more calls from scammers than from patients. We have even had patients receive the calls while in our office.

Receiving unwanted scam and spam phone calls has become the norm for almost everyone with a phone.

Some calls are very easy to recognize as nefarious, while others sound legitimate and can ensnare even those who are able to identify typical scam calls. Call centers filled with multiple scammers have become wiser and more sophisticated as their tactics have evolved to try to deceptively take money from unsuspecting victims.

Scammers rely on contacting vulnerable individuals who are often lonely or confused in order to trick victims into ultimately sending cash, gift card numbers, and/or access to their computer or online accounts. Many calls will begin with an automated message while others start with a live caller. The caller will often call claiming to be from a well-known company such as Amazon, AT&T, Geek Squad, Microsoft, or other technology related companies. While the basis of the call varies, some common scams involve notification of a

At some point, while the scammer has remote access to the victim’s computer, they will then have the victim log in to their bank account. The scammer will have the victim fill out the refund form and will trick the victim into believing too much money has been refunded into their bank account. The scammer then compels the victim to send the overpayment back in the form of cash or gift cards (by having the victim purchase the gift cards and then give the numbers to the scammer.) Usually, the scammer keeps the victim on the phone for the entire process in order to control the situation and to prevent the victim from letting anyone else know what has happened.

Other variations give the scammer access to the victim’s online account, such as Amazon, which will allow the scammer access to saved credit card information that is then used to complete fraudulent transactions. We have posted a video from YouTube star Mark Rober on our Facebook page that has much of this information and more (it includes how they managed to get at least one person involved with a scam arrested.) Please take time to become educated so you can protect yourself and your family members from potentially becoming a victim.

Bike Brighton releases 2021 Full Moon Bike Ride schedule Offered by: City of Brighton Communications

ear up for Bike Brighton’s 2021 Full Moon Bike Rides! The Pink Moon ride will kick off the 2021 schedule on April 26 at 6:30 p.m.

The free monthly community event is for bicyclists of all levels to enjoy a leisurely five to 10 mile ride through Brighton as the sun sets. See the full lineup of 2021 Full Moon Bike Rides below:

Monday, April 26 - Pink Moon Wednesday, May 26 - Flower Moon Thursday, June 24 - Strawberry Moon Friday, July 23 - Buck Moon Sunday, August 22 - Sturgeon Moon Monday, September 20 - Harvest Moon *Note: A map the rides will be posted to the Bike Brighton page of the City’s website.

All rides are free and start (at 6:30 p.m.) and end at Emi Chikuma Splash Pad and Plaza located at 1750 Skeel Street. Ride sign-ups begin at 6:15 p.m. (participants will have to sign a waiver the first time they attend and check-in each ride thereafter). A free giveaway drawing and serving of treats will occur after each ride - to enter the drawing, you must check in!

Face coverings will be required while waiting for rides (but are not mandatory while riding) and any other COVID-19 health and safety guidelines at the time of each ride will apply. Helmets and bike lights are recommended. Also, please remember to bring a bottle of water for the ride during the hot months.
