INTRODUCTION BRIEF, PHILOSOPHY AND PROGRAMME

BRIEF: Sustainable material production and recycling center in Deptford Programme: Biomaterial laboratory and retail space.

Minimum requirements: 2 storeys high, have indoor and outdoor spaces Private spaces: office, storage/deliveries and facilities for 2 members of staff • Semi-public spaces: community education space (e.g auditorium, meeting/seminar room), communal toilets, living area, kitchen-relaxing/eating space for 15 people • Public spaces: exhibition space, retail area (selling the product), public realm (a welcoming public throughroute), gardens These 3 elements should intertwine, overlap or negotiate the same space within various programmatic time-spans.

PHILOSOPHY: The Power of Gaia: The main concept for this project is self annihilation, climate crisis and the infinite possibilities of tomorrow. The idea is directly inspired from ‘We belong to Gaia’ by James LoveLock. The project aims to educate, attract users, showcase the potenical of new materials and technologies, whilst focusing on creating a circular economy in Deptford and giving back to the community.

PROGRAMME: Bio-Plastic production lab (Marina Tex) with a bio-plastics retail space both for Marina Tex and other pioneering bio-plastic companies. Office space for Marina Tex. Combined with a fluid workshop (make your own bio-plastic) and educational space for children, families and visitors. And a rooftop terrace bar as a magnet for new costumers.

SITE ANALYSIS DEPTFORD MARKET YARD GARAGE

Commonly known for its naval history as the first Royal Dockyards, and having the oldest railway station in London (opened in 1836). Post the WWII bombings and industrical decline Depford suffered a period of decadence and decline. However, over the past 20 years Deptford area has started to redevelop the commercial and residential buildings whilst fostering growth and social inclusion, specifically through a dynamic artistic and creative community, from art galleries to dance centres and music studios. Especially, in front of the market garage site an extensive array of arches full of trendy shops, cool cafes and art studios, attract the existing community and new clientele. Additionally every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the Deptford High Street market is put up, a few metres down the road from the site.

Site analysis reflection: The sound measured in location 2 comes from a record shop at an unpleasant 70db average.

The building in front of the site is at least 20m high and casts shadow over the site in the afternoon, however the building material surface does not cause glare. Wind speed increased in location 2 due to some form of downdraft effect from this building.

Images from Deptford High street during and after the market. The majority of the waste comes from the market, retail stores and the visitors. The predominant waste found was single use plastics and cardboard (specifically from packaging). Although waste does not have the biggest impact on carbon emissions, Lewisham council has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030, and take action against the climate crisis.

BRIEF AND CLIENT ANALYSIS BIOMATERIAL LABORATORY AND RETAIL SPACE: SOLUTION What is a Bio-plastic A bioplastic is a biobased polymer derived from a biomass, and it may or may not be biodegradable. PHA or PLA plastics are 100% degradable under commercial composting in under 12 weeks and are estimated to naturally biodegrade in the span of 80 years as contrasted to normal plastics that will take centuries to degrade. Polylactic acid is a thermoplastic derived from renewable sources such as sugarcane and corn starch rather than being produced from distillation of fossil fuels, it uses 65% less energy and generates up to 70% less greenhouse gases when compared to convenient plastics, and is used in agriculture, medicine, textile industry and packaging. PLA can degrade by hydrolysis, thermal degradation and photodegradation.

Marina Tex resecarh lab proposal: based on research into biodegradable single use plastics as a solution to the excessive waste analized in Deptford Lucy Hughs the pioneer behind Marina tex .

Marina Tex bioplastic is made out of fish waste scales, 50 million tonnes of fish is wasted annually according to the UN. Can be used as an equivalent to plastic bags, single-use packaging or a transparent film. Does not leach harmful chemicals and can be consumed, causing no harm to wildlife or humans and can degrade in soil environment within 6 weeks.

THE POWER OF GAIA PHILOSPHY REPRESENTED IN A COLLAGE

The title for the project ‘The power of Gaia’ is directly inspired by ‘We belong to Gaia’ by James Lovelock who easily explains how the planet is an intelligent system that has adapted itself throughout time. However, it is also adapting itself to our presence and our exploitation of it, and to put it in simple terms it is fighting back by continuously adapting its climate.

The Power of Gaia is a visual representation of how we humans are destroying our planet, how it will fight back and how we are achieving our own extinction. However, the project also tries to convey a positive message through its program and design about the potential for change and infinite possibilities of tomorrow. The project is a direct visual call for action.

THE POWER OF GAIA CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT FROM PHILOSOPHY

Experimentation of the philosophy through physical models. Ideas of coming from within to without, engulfing, colour red as a symbolism for power, white for purity, mesh inspired directly from fishnets found in Deptford highstreet fish markets and stalls. Concept model created by pouring hot melted wax on top.

Steven Hall, Simmons Hall, MIT, The voids designed have a double use, as the lungs of the building and the allowance of diffused light, combined with junxaposed alluring interiors.

Gordon Matta Clark works, 1970 Appoached art through a radical perspective on large scale architectural interventions, specifically slicing buildings and removing parts. creating unique viewpoints from inside and out.

Investigating sun path and shadow casting in the interior throughout the year on 3D models, to understand the amount of diffused light and direct sunlight needed in the space. Example shown during Summer solstice and Winter solstice at 12pm.

Interested in the entrances of light creating user comfort and unique experience for the, as the users navigate unexpected juxtaposed geometries.

Transparency of a cultural media center, and see through glass facade, with steel lattice collums, used for accessebility, light atriums and utilities.

Curved out vertical alluminium strips, allowing for a fluid yet rectilinear geometry.

Investigating atriums, transparency through voids within the facade and meshes coming out from within the building. Combined with the idea of opacity within the interior and spaces allowing for the public transparency of the project, whilst managing a coherent circulation within the building.

Designed by Stuttgart University (ITKE) thermo foldable sheets of bioplastic , containing over 90% of renewable materials. The main main biopolimer used is lignin, a by-product from wood pulping process, creating a material with naturally reinforced fibres. The aim of the project was to show the potential of bioplastics and the properties it can have in the construction industry,

High-tech arts and cultures centre, described as a large urban toy, with services and structure on the outside of the building. Such as the escalator, an access route to all floors and a visual experience for the users.

The idea of combining two bio-based materials for the structure of the mesh and the mesh. Specifically using parametric design, rationalising organic design to simplify and create a fish net like structure. Each surface has to be modelled by hand first and then scripted through Grasshopper.

Double skin facade, with an inlet lovre (mechanical or mer as the heated air is exhausted. Closed in winter to maintain the the heat and reduce the heat loss, decreasing the surface temperature. Distance between the two surfaces is 35cm, allowing to improve acoustic insulation (from the original 70db of the record store infront of the site. Hence improving insulation, both thermal and acoustic.

Thermal Labyrinth heat exhcnage system, in winter heating the air and allowing to minimazie the use of heating, A passive strategy that maintains constant temperature throuout the year. In summer cooling the air, allowing to minimazie the use of airconditioning.

PLA semi translucent mesh, as a second skin, allowes for solar shading, both in terms of visual and thermal confort

Moss and plants that grow in the shade (Wood spurge, Snowdrop, Winter aco nites, Ivy) creating extra humidity for the thermal Labyrinth, as well as user expere ince of an outdoor garden.

THE POWER OF GAIA MATERIAL STUDIES: EXPERIMENTATION WITH BIO-PLASTICS

Corn starch biopolimer + Vegetable glycerin + Distilled water + Hem tow : Flexible yet strong.

Exteremly sticky at the start, like glue consisntency and unpleasent to the touch. After 5 days dried and became strong yet bendable. The hemp tow allows for the flexibility , while the biopolimer and glycerin add strength

Corn starch biopolimer + Vegetable glycerin + Distilled water + Personal grinded tea leafs waste : Flexible and silicone like at the start of the process, skrinks 1/3 in size, stronger than the original Cornstart simple bioplimer, ends up being brittle after 2 weeks.

Corn starch biopolimer + Vegetable glycerin + Distilled water + Vinager : Flexible and silicone like at the start of the process, with strong vinegar smell, yet after a few days dries and skrinks and becomes brittle, easily broken. Bio degrades faster than Agar agar biopolimer. 5 (Weeks lest outdoor)

Agar Agar biopolimer + Vegetable glycerin + Distilled water : Flexible and bendable, does not become brittle, somewhat transparent yet shrinks double in its original size. Difficult to tear apart. Bio degrades very slowly, becomes more transparent over time and maleable when left under the rain.

Corn starch biopolimer + Vegetable glycerin + Distilled water: + Vinegar + Hemp seeds : Silicone like texture from the start, srinked only a few mm and is soft to the touch, after a few weeks became oily, probably due to the fats in the hemp seeds, after 5 weeks still soft to the touch.

Beef Gelatine + Vegetable glycerin + Distilled water + and Egg shells : Extremely liquid at the start, did not shrink, maleable and flexible yet stronger than the original glycerin sample.

Does biodegrade easier than the rest outdoors, yet in interior conditions is exacrtly the same after 5 weeks.

Showcasing the potential bioplastics and PLA, not only through massified structures, but small daily used objects and furniture.

3D Printed semi translucent PLA voided tubes which create a mesh, welded with heat. Each piece can be printed with a DELTA WASP 3D PRINTER, and mounted on site . Joined at the top with gravel through TEE joints and grovel and tongue joints.

Home made bioplastic sheet curtains creating threshholds in the interior, and a unique expereince for the users. Proposal to use the Beef Gelatine and egg shell bio plastic as a curtian. Creating a translucent material that can cast interesting shadows
