MOVING tributes have been paid to two elderly friends who were killed after they were hit by a car in Birkdale. Enquiries into the tragedy are ongoing, say Merseyside Police, and they have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to call them. The pensioners, Marie Cunningham, 79, and Grace Foulds, 85,were walking on Lulworth Road on Tuesday, November 30 at around 5pm when they were struck by a white Audi A3. Members of the public gave them first aid before paramedics arrived to take the women to hospital, where they sadly passed away.

A family tribute for Marie, read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our special mum, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunty, Marie (Mary) Cunningham. “Marie was an amazing person who lived for and loved her family and will be missed every day. Our family would like to thank the members of the public who stopped to give first aid and assistance to Marie and Grace at the time of the incident.” Continued p5

Eyes down for Julian’s new book... on bingo! THERE’S no balls in bingo! according to a former bingo hall manager from Southport who has just completed a book about his 38 year career. Julian Cotterell, 71, served as the general manager on two occasions from 1971-73 and then 1981-86 at the closed-down Lucky 7, on Lord Street. During his time in the industry, he travelled to South Africa in 1998 to help set-up the country’s first ever bingo hall. His new autobiography/memoirs is called ‘There’s No Balls in Bingo!’ Julian, who lived in Banks for 19 years before moving to Spain, told the Champion: “Bingo in the 70s was so much different compared to the 80s. In 1971 I arrived at Lucky 7 in Southport. I filled the club to capacity at the weekends with some 2,000 people playing with massive prizes.
