Don’t Settle for Any Old “Free” Kitchen Sink— Consider All of Your Options First

Getting a “free” sink with new countertops is a great value.

False. While tempting, the “free” sinks typically included from countertop fabricators are usually short on features.

To ensure you know exactly what you’re getting, be sure to ask the countertop fabricator for the sink’s price to see what it’s really worth. And if you decide to upgrade to another sink option, be sure to ask for a credit for the original one to maximize your investment.

If I want to upgrade the sink that comes with my new countertops, I can easily do that down the road.

False. When it comes to kitchen upgrades and renovations, the sink is often one of the last design decisions.

However, when installing stone countertops, materials are specifically cut to match the kitchen sink’s shape and model. Upgrading the sink or changing the design after installation is often impossible using the same piece of stone and can lead to headaches and added costs.

Paint. You definitely get the most bang for your buck with painting a room. It is cheap, low risk and can make a huge difference! If you don’t love your paint color, paint!

If you had to move to another country, which would you pick and why?

Costa Rica. I have spent a lot of time there and from the surf, the people, quality of life, community and pace of life, it feels like home away from home to me.

What’s a common mistake homeowners make when they take on a home improvement project themselves?

Underestimating the cost and the time that it takes to get the job done. I have seen that time and time again! I always tell people to start small.

Another serious mistake I hear all too often is that some people think you don’t have to pump out your septic system. That is absolutely wrong—I promise.

Fill in the blank. The three things I can’t live without are: Coffee, music and doing something that I am excited about.

What’s one thing you wish every homeowner knew?

How to make sure their home is safe and healthy.

As a home inspector, I have seen too often how a lack of understanding can lead to an unhealthy or even dangerous home.

What are your best small space living hacks?

I live in an airstream trailer, so I have had a lot of practice.

There are a ton of cool space saver ideas but none more practical than just simply getting rid of the crap that you don’t use on a daily basis.

Minimalism is not everyone’s thing but it gives you a clarity and freedom that is very important to me.

What’s something that folks should watch out for when working with a contractor or interior designer?

A lack of experience and a lack of references and reviews. They may be lovely people but one thing that comes with experience is that the majority of your mistakes are in the past. If you don’t want to be one of those mistakes, make sure that the person you hire has the required experience that you and your budget deserve.

What décor items are worth splurging on?

I am a little biased here because it is my favorite thing to build but I would say the dining room table.

You should love it. So many memories happen here,

important conversations, life moments, business, etc. The dining table is a centerpiece for life. Make it a great one.

What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self?

I would just let him know that everything works out in the end.

Would you rather upgrade your closet, bathroom or kitchen?

I would upgrade my bedroom.

I am usually in an airstream in California, but I have a home in Austin with the master up and I have been wanting to add some square footage to it and make the master down.

Could you live in a tiny home?

I could absolutely live in a tiny home. Now could I live in a tiny home with kids? That’s a different question.

Which HGTV/DIY Network star would you most like to work with and why?

Vanilla Ice, not to do any work but just to sing “Ice Ice Baby" with him.

You’ve been interviewed many times. What is the one question you always wish someone would ask?

Do you want a margarita? No one has ever asked me that during an interview.

Tips For a Fresh Fall Landscape • Change it up: Line your flower beds with evergreens like these

boxwood hedges and rotate seasonal flowering flora in the middle to create beautiful “color beds.” Swap drought-tolerant orange coleus for frost-resistant pansies, violas, or snapdragons.

the garden bed. Good organic soils often include chicken manure and pine bark river sand, which provide nutrients and aid with drainage.

irst impressions are everything. So think about the statement your home’s front door will make. Before investing in a new door, here are three key factors to consider.

1. Material Matters. Take into account a door’s heft, its ability to withstand harsh elements, and protect against potential break-ins. “Since the first thing guests touch is your door, if it feels substantial, that conveys ‘quality’ and this reflects on the entire house,” says Carol Simmons, owner of Jennifer’s Glassworks.

2. The Energy X-factor. The National Fenestration Rating Council helps shoppers compare energy performance ratings, which helps save money. Look for low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and U-factor ratings (less than 0.8). SHGC measures how well a product resists heat from the sun and the U-factor measures how well the door prevents heat from escaping.

3. Light It Up. If you desire a well-lit entryway, glass is your best choice. Frosted varieties ensure privacy, while transparent options let in more sunlight. Don’t forget exterior lighting to accentuate your new investment!

The Art of Restoration tio ti ion on Art and antiques lover Mark Edge thoughtfully revived his historic Midtown home and filled it with one-of-a-kind treasures. Here, he shares lessons learned and why this 10-room home means so much to him.

There are before-and-afters when it comes to home improvement, and then there are Before-And-Afters.

Celebrity jewelry designer Mark Edge’s Midtown residence is most certainly the latter. Just as he carefully crafts each wearable piece of art for his 24-year-old company, Mark Edge Jewelry, he also wisely chooses each eclectic item in his home.

Situated less than two blocks from Piedmont Park, this 100-year-old home had all the makings of a teardown—awful remnants (visual and aromatic) of sitting vacant for more than three years, dust and damage from coal-burning fireplaces and a look of decay and dilapidation that only occurs when a home has truly been neglected. But there was also something else: hope.

“This house was completely shot, like the Titanic resting on the bottom of the ocean," says Edge of the historic home he purchased in 2007. “It went down grand but now was the time to get it up."

Restoring Edge’s 4,400-square-foot home, originally built in 1909 by Georgia governor William J. Northen, certainly was an endeavor of titanic proportions. Northen and his family, who were mostly lawyers and mortgage bankers, lived in the home for about 100 years (grandson George T. Northen was a notable socialite and involved in many philanthropic organizations throughout the country).

Edge had to call in reinforcements in the form of interior designer and friend, Amy Wikman, co-founder of Bjork Studio, who just happens to also have a master’s degree in historic preservation. “Every single thing in this house has been touched, restored or replaced, in some way," says Wikman. “One of Mark’s friends begged him not to buy [the house], calling it ‘Grey Gardens: Atlanta.’” (left) Homeowner Mark Edge loves collecting clocks, artwork and much more. Testing the limits of restoration and great design is all on the table, or in this case, custom elliptical island. The kitchen’s floor-to-ceiling, brick-patterned marble tiles, which have an exquisite, veined effect with grays and blues, balance the unexpected teal-hued ceiling. Other standouts include the farmhouse sink, Sub-Zero glass-front refrigerator and range, and the stunning eight-foot French doors that open to the terrace.

Now that the team was in place, including a contractor sensitive to restoration and applying a tax credit that gives owners financial incentive to preserve their home’s original architecture, it was time to add life to the once deserted home. Edge was adamant about preserving the home’s history; his mantra for the project was “restore the integrity.”

Wikman and Edge salvaged and restored elements in creative ways, like recycling the home’s main kitchen into the property’s one-bedroom, detached guest/carriage house, and keeping existing radiators for purely aesthetic purposes. Every square inch was touched (perhaps in this case, retouched), which is part of the fun when exploring Edge’s fabulous, art-filled bungalow—the library’s bronze doorknobs from New Orleans and painstakingly preserved pocket doors, the 1970s conference-table-turned-dining-room table (rumored to have sat in Ted Turner's conference rooms at his billboard business Turner Outdoor Advertising), an original service button hidden under a chic floor rug, and much more.

Undertaking a project like this came with lots of growing pains for Edge. His major takeaways? “Take advantage of the historic rehabilitation tax credit from the Department of the Interior, freeze property taxes at your purchase price for eight and a half years, have a lot of patience and a master plan and budget in place before you start a project.” Set a realistic time frame for completion date and other pertinent components. “Restorations take a lot longer and cost a lot more than you can imagine.” He also says to be sure to work with an architect and interior designer who understand the restoration process as well as what’s appropriate for the structure.

Wikman added the master bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling stained wood paneling alongside the original painted plaster walls to create a bold space, ensconced in lush fabrics, shapes and images.

The bed was another custom piece, created by Wikman’s furniture company, Bjork Studio.

“Mark made me a better designer,” Wikman says. “When you push each other, it makes for a better project.”

Over the course of nearly two years, Edge and Wikman salvaged as much as they could; not only paying homage to this historic home, but also creating the perfect setting to show off Edge’s collection of stunning art, eclectic antiques, and unusual knickknacks.

“I’ve been a collector my whole life,” he says. “Art makes me happy; it’s an adrenaline rush.” This self-described art addict has over 100 pieces (there's a Picasso in his guest bathroom!), in addition to antiques like globes, clocks and lamps, most of it procured directly from the artist or Scott Antique Markets and estate sales. Whether seeking out a talented, emerging artist or literally stumbling upon a sculpture by the side of the road, he and Wikman have created an eclectic design scheme that celebrates anything and everything. As Edge puts it, “If you love something, you make it work. I collect things that are kind of weird and original—if something wasn’t good when it was made, it will never be good in the future.”

The dining room’s warm color combinations of olive/chartreuse, burnt orange and soft metallic cleverly accentuate both the original architecture and Edge’s art collection.

Even the light fixture is, by extension, a work of art itself—Wikman had the individual mirrored pendants, from Notre Monde, mounted to create one, dramatic piece. The lighting successfully highlights the Italian acrylic chairs and the large table, rumored to have once been a conference table that Ted Turner pulled a chair up to.

The esteemed collector has curated an art exhibition inside his home. Every piece is a statement piece. But in the end, Edge’s home itself might be the most special item in his collection of art. “I love that the house is an antique with a wonderful patina and I also love its large-scale rooms. It’s really neat to live in an old home in the middle of the city.” (top) "We didn’t change the footprint of the house at all,” says Wikman. The restored, original brick fireplace in the living room greets visitors, as they pass along the original hardwood flooring inlays, by the leaded glass bookcases and bench seating. And this piece of wood, which resembles a foot, sitting atop the mantel was in the fireplace when Edge first acquired the home. It has now been promoted into his beloved collection of art. A Wellness Retreat Some families gather around the kitchen table, others the pool.

But this Milton family’s go-to spot is the gym. Working together to stay healthy has always been a staple for the four of them. After spending many tiresome hours commuting to the neighborhood gym, the homeowners decided to transform part of their unfinished basement into a health resort just seconds away.

Cory Regan, owner of Trademark Building Company consulted the fitness enthusiasts to design the workout room of their dreams. To start, several windows and exterior doors were added to bring in ample daylight in what was previously a dimly lit basement. And, a wall was removed to add square footage. This gave everyone enough space to not only stretch but also provided an open area to push each other to personal bests.
