Embracing Fall Fun

S

o what is there to celebrate? Professionally I am happy to acknowledge the 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine’s “5th Anniversary” and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of business owners and management who co-market currently or in the past to create this publication (I can vouch for the support they also provide the community), the readership within the 9,300 homes who receive this magazine and support locally, the Post Office for assuring delivery, the talented professionals (such as Charlene Chavez, Lourdes Arvizu, Jim Roberts, Senerchia Hendry and Peter Groot) and volunteers (such as Jessica Morales, Janet Salah, Karen Crocker, Jill Amen, Krystal Woodworth, and so many more) that have gotten involved, worked at our Festival booth or events, and helped with the magazine through the years, and the Heroes and Leaders in our community making improvments one at a time, whether individually or through schools, charities, sports, churches, clubs and other organizations. As my close friends know, I also am celebrating my 4th anniversary as a stage 3 breast cancer survivor. Being surrounded by a fantastic support system is a great factor for survival and I thank my lucky stars to have so many bright personalities in my reach shining on me. My best wishes go out to the other cancer survivors in Almaden because we have quite a handful. In fact, if you are a survivor and would like to participate, we can do a group article, so email me if interested. We have planned a 95120 Night series event for September 19th at The Studio (6:00 - 9:00pm). I will be attending and would look forward to meeting new people if you have not come out to one of our gatherings as of yet. Native Grains founder Rob Ferguson will be present with a special treat. He will be bringing many delicious pizzas, breads and other hand-made products their company produces with healthy grains (read his story on page 7). Food you can feel good about eating. He will have some available for purchase or future ordering as well, if you want to stock up for

We have a new fitness center hitting the Lucky Shopping Center on Redmond and Meridian. For any Zumba or UJAM enthusiasts, such as myself, this is very exciting news. Dance fitness without having to join a gym or drive more than 5 minutes is a dream come true. I look forward to great things coming from this location. Resetting Your Organic Computer Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is focused around creating a safe atmosphere or space for the client, holding appropriate practitioner boundaries and using a very gentle touch. The practitioner listens deeply to the fluctuations of the cerebrospinal fluid within the craniosacral system. The fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid creates a variety of tides within the system. As the practitioner– from a place of stillness– listens to these internal tides, the client’s system begins to access its own inner resources… perhaps a little like finding keys to previously locked doors. The cerebrospinal fluid– as it bathes and protects the brain and spinal cord– carries an intelligence and potency, which becomes mixed with other bodily fluids via the dural membranes. BCST therapists learn to listen deeply to the system, tapping into its inherent intelligence, focusing on the system remembering its original blueprint of health. The therapist encourages the client’s system to access its resources, offering new choices and possibilities for the system at every level. Training includes deep perceptual and centering skills as well as extensive study of the anatomy, physiology, and inherent motion of the craniosacral system. Anecdotal evidence shows BCST may be helpful in addressing such situations as impingement of cranial nerves or spinal nerves, left-right imbalances, head injuries, confusion, feelings of compression or pressure, anxiety, depression, circulatory disorders, organ dysfunctions, learning difficulties, neuro-endocrine problems, TMJ and dental problems, and trauma of all kinds– birth, falls, accidents and other injuries, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, PTSD, loss/ grief, surgery, anesthesia, among others. BCST is also excellent as a preventive therapy because it can facilitate the resolution of imbalances within a patient/ client’s system that s/he may not be consciously aware of. The therapy may surprise you with benefits you hadn’t known were possible,

06 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

including resolution of symptoms that you had no idea were related to the cranial system or to each other. You may feel lighter, with a sense of more spaciousness within yourself. You may notice more ease in relationships or ability to focus. You may stand straighter or breathe more easily and deeply. Pains may decrease and emotional boundaries may be easier to maintain. It is likely you will feel deeply relaxed and centered. Because each person is unique, it is impossible for us to say exactly what benefit you will feel, or how long it will take you to feel it, but the above comments are quite common. An example is Rollin Becker, DO, spoke of a client who presented a specific symptom but got up from the session with a great urge to go home, clean the house and put things in order; none of these impulses were on the original agenda. In retrospect they did seem to relate to the presenting condition. Everyone potentially can benefit, though with some, the improvement may be more dramatic than with others. Because BCST builds health in the brain and nervous system, it is effective in assisting the prevention of chronic conditions, including the problems of aging, stiffness, dryness, memory loss, inflammation, immune imbalances. BCST also addresses injuries, even those that occurred long ago and that we had no idea were still affecting us. —Frances Reckholder, CMT “If you would like to try BCST or Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapy, please call (408) 888-6103 for a free consultation at my studio conveniently located at 2046 Camden Ave., San Jose 95124”

Eat Your Way to Health

o you define good health as the absence of illness, or by the risk factors you have? You have Type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, heart disease, and have a BMI that qualifies you as obese (30) or morbidly obese (40). You can still function well, and feel fine. You look around and see plenty of people bigger than you and you wonder, “why me?” You try to work out and eat right, but it’s not working for you. No matter what you do, you can’t shake the old habits that got you into this mess. You feel like a failure, and things get worse. What to do? For most people facing these issues, the problem starts with processed food, or as Michael Pollin writes in his book “Food Rules”, edible food-like substances. Fake food. Food loaded with sugars, fats and refined-to-death grains (have you bought into the gluten-free craze?). It’s time to eat your way to good health. Start by eliminating processed foods from your diet. No enriched flour. No steel-milled grains. No high fructose corn syrup. No preservatives, additives, or ingredients that you can’t pronounce or that you wouldn’t keep in your spice cupboard. No soft drinks (even calorie-free), chips, crackers, bread, pasta, processed meats or foods that your great-grandparents wouldn’t recognize. I know what you’re thinking, “what’s left, that’s all I eat!” Hold on, there’s great news ahead! Let’s start the road to health by eating only whole, stone-milled grains. Stone-milling grains were the only way wheat was milled until the late 1800’s, when steel roller-milled grains came into practice with the industrial revolution. Oops, what a mistake! This process separates the bran, germ and endosperm, and then mills the pieces. The resulting flour is tasty, has a long shelf life and is little more than a good ingredient for paste. Whole wheat is not, unless it’s stone milled. What’s the effect on the body? Since most of the heavy work has been done by the milling process, steel milled grains convert quickly to energy and unless you burn this quickly, they turn to fat. If the body could talk (not the ego) it would yell, “where’s the nutrition?” Steel milled flour is found

Cruzer Sandwiches

Take-N-Bake Pizzas

in cakes, cookies, cereal, bread, pasta, crackers and a host of processed foods that appeal to our ego and harm our body in the long run. It’s like smoking; it takes a while before the effects turn to illness or disease. Chemicals, additives, refined sugars, salt, fats and all sorts of stuff is included in processed foods by the food industry to make the food appealing to our ego’s taste buds. It is cheap, long lasting, travels well, and has plenty of calories but little nutrition. Kids love it. Dads love eating it while watching sports. Moms love the convenience and that the family doesn’t complain. This stuff provides jobs and rewards for the food industry and health care providers, but is impacting our society in many ways. The United States is either the most or second most obese nation on earth (Mexico is gaining on us) with over 30% of Americans qualifying as obese. In the 1950’s, the American food budget was around 20% of income, and health care was about 5%. Guess what? These numbers are now flipped. We spend nearly 20% of our money on health care (compared to less that 3% for Japan), and over half is spent on preventable disease. Lifestyle illnesses consume more of our health care costs than anything else. Obesity can lead to Type-2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, sleep apnea and other leading causes of death and morbidity. The food game is rigged. The preponderance of prepared food in bags, boxes and cans is designed to make you not only want it, but inspires many brains to want A LOT OF IT! Why eat vegetables, fruits and real food when there is so much recreational food around, and it’s CHEAP! In the opening paragraph I described someone with the results that the American Western Diet can develop. That was me. I was born in the early 50’s and ate processed foods in large quantities my whole life (I also smoked for over 30 years). I loved baked goods (using white, steel-milled flour), chips, diet drinks and Twinkies, HoHos, Fritos, French bread, French fries, burgers, pizza, fried fish, fried donuts and plenty of preservatives, additives and a lot of stuff I couldn’t pronounce (I still can’t). Expression- Increasing Communication Skills for Students with Autism

V

ruti Desai, a recent Leland High School graduate, who is now attending the University of California, Berkeley shared her experience with a summer program that impressed us. We all know high school students are required to obtain volunteer hours. It is nice to hear about this making a difference in a young life. Vruti volunteered at a summer school class for students with autism, and it built awareness in her that she acted upon. She created her a program (which she named Expression) for younger students with autism and visited them consistently between her senior classes. By Vruti Desai, I realized many autistic students had great difficulty communicating their emotions. Due to the decreased amount of one-on-one support, they were offered less activities and electives. I saw that this was a very large issue, so I designed a program to help and named it “Expression.” I attended different schools between my 4th and 6th period, to teach these autistic kids some life-long skills to help them improve their communication, creativity and confidence. Every Monday I visited Graystone Elementary to work with autistic students from kindergarten to 2nd grade, and every Thursday I attended John Muir to work with autistic students from 6th grade to 8th grade. Every week we tried a new activity (from science experiments, art and crafts, obstacle courses, music, and even speech and debate) and developed a new skill. After spending a few weeks using my patient disposition to answer an immeasurable torrent of questions, I realized their loquacious nature and eagerness for answers illuminated their desire to learn. I treasured their curiosity and empowered it with my own enthusiasm to design the 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

activities accordingly. Nothing made me happier than seeing a smile across their faces. Whether it was painting a picture, singing a song, or dancing around the room, I found myself being drawn into this world of everlasting curiosity, simplicity, and innocence. Although many were very talkative, I noticed a few of the students at John Muir had difficulty communicating their emotions. Sometimes the teachers and students would get frustrated, due to the lack of understanding what the student wanted or why they were behaving a certain way. After some research, I found out that there are iPad applications such as “proloquo2go” which allow them to communicate their thoughts without speaking. In order to raise money for these applications, I asked countless volunteers to help me plan and execute the fundraiser “Dandia for Expression”, which was held on April 26th at John Muir Middle School. Over 100 people came to the event, and we raised about $1,000. “Expression” is now being considered for my Girl Scout Gold Award. I have also realized the joy from giving back to society. I am now an active volunteer for National Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation, I restarted teaching the flute to the elementary school kids at my alma mater and I continue to volunteer with students with autism. I am all the more determined to find time in college and as I move forward in life to support the less fortunate kids in this world and to be able to make a difference. I have learned how to champion and rally others to support a cause, to carry out an idea no matter how small or difficult it may seem, and to overcome obstacles. All the students I work with have really taught me to dream big, never give up, and to approach every hurdle in life with a smile. For more info. about the program, email vruti.desai@gmail.com.

Experienced Care- Close to Home!

Brother, Can You Spare a Constitutional Amendment? It seems like just about every intersection has someone out there with a sign asking for help. Whether it’s a request for food, a job or beer money, they all have a hand out for a handout. Some people feel sorry for these money-seekers and will roll down their windows and give a few dollars. Others sit in their cars wondering why the local police don’t crack down on these pan-handlers and free the corners from these intrusive solicitations. If you are in the second group, you had better get used to seeing your corners populated by citizens with cardboard signs. The courts have held that begging is a type of free speech, and thus, protected by the First Amendment. While the Supreme Court has not weighed in on this matter specifically as it relates to individuals soliciting funds and how that solicitation intersects with free speech, the Courts of Appeal in the Second, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eleventh circuits have all ruled that begging is a form of solicitation protected by the First Amendment. For the record, the United States Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the First Amendment protects charitable solicitation performed by organizations – these Courts see begging as an extension of that. For example, the Seventh Circuit, in reviewing a challenge to an anti-panhandling statute, stated that, just like the organized charities, the panhandlers’ messages cannot always be easily separated from their need for money. The Court went on to say that while some communities might wish for all solicitors, beggars and advocates of various causes be vanished from the streets, the First Amendment guarantees their right to be there, deliver their pitch and ask for support. In the most recent Michigan case, a lawsuit was filed by the ACLU on behalf of two Grand Rapids residents who were repeatedly arrested or ticketed by police for violating the state’s blanket ban on begging in public. James Speet receives food stamps, and also collects bottles, cans and scrap metal to survive. Speet has often sought and found odd jobs by holding up a sign in public that read “Need Job, God Bless.” Speet, who was prosecuted multiple times under the now unconstitutional state law, was arrested in July 2011 for holding up the sign in Grand Rapids. “I see people holding up signs throughout the city advertising restaurants or protesting and they didn’t get arrested or ticketed,” said Speet. “I don’t understand why my sign was any different just because I’m homeless and looking for a job.” The Michigan court agreed, and held that “begging, or the soliciting of alms, is a form of solicitation that the First Amendment protects.” Instead of stating a person is engaging in disorderly conduct simply for begging in a public place, the Courts have suggested that cities would be better served by a more narrow statute that, instead of directly prohibiting begging, is more targeted to a specific objectionable conduct such as fraud. Love it or hate it, you should get used to it. As the saying goes, free speech is only free speech if all speech is protected, not just the kind you personally agree with. 10 Ways to Start this School Year Off on the Right Foot!

S

ummer is already over and the kids are back in school. A new school year always brings new challenges. Maybe a new school, different teachers, new and old friends, playground and classroom challenges, these are all a part of the new year’s ‘settling in’ phase. Maybe last year was a bad year for your child. Maybe he or she struggled with some of the learning material or didn’t have a great relationship with his or her teacher. Perhaps he or she stopped liking school and was increasingly too “sick” to attend school. Let’s try and make this upcoming year your child’s best year ever!

1.

If you can’t say anything nice, keep it to yourself Be positive about school when discussing it with or in front of your child. Never underestimate your influence. There will always be things about the school, teacher or class that may make you unhappy. However, remember that your child follows your lead. A positive “front” from you can make all the difference in your child’s attitude and how she chooses to approach school.

2.

Caught doing good Reinforce good student attitudes and behaviors by recognizing your child with a positive comment or praise immediately. This type of positive reinforcement is a great reward system that can set academic success in motion for the year.

3.

Routine Set a schedule for homework, reading, playtime, and extracurricular activities. Abiding by this schedule as closely as possible will help children structure their days and help them feel as if they have more control over their time. By allotting time for not just work, but play as well, you’re also teaching your children the value of balance in their lives.

4.

Homework help Stay abreast of your child’s academic needs by helping with homework. Depending on the age level and degree of need, you don’t necessarily have to contribute greatly, but being present allows you to praise your child for his successes and know when to be concerned about his struggles. This way you don’t wait for report cards to learn of difficulties and you can help your child when his frustration is highest, not months after the fact.

5.

Develop good study habits Ensure that during the schedule homework time, your child has a quiet space to work and the time is free from interruptions.

6.

Organization Help your child keep her school items organized. Ensure backpack, agenda book and school binder are adapted to her organizational level and abilities. Together, going through the backpack daily will teach beneficial habits and keep you informed - every parent has found important notices crumpled in the bottom and covered in unidentifiable lunch remnants! As well, teach your child how to organize her binder with labeled dividers. Just buying the binder isn’t enough; some guidance and structure from you can go a long way. Developing organizational habits can significantly reduce anxiety over lost assignments and missing items. It will also save both of you from those dreaded “all-nighters” devoted to huge projects you were just made aware of on the evening of the due date. 12 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

7.

Calendar Keep a large wall calendar with all important school dates, birthdays, extracurricular activities, etc. Your whole family will appreciate knowing at a mere glance what the day, week, or month is going to entail and plan accordingly.

8.

Keep on top of things The reality is that teachers begin each year with the understanding that children have already grasped concepts in previous years and are at a certain academic level. However, your child may have missed some concepts in previous years which may lead to struggles this year. Don’t spend the year waiting and hoping that your child will eventually “get it”. Your child’s confidence and self-esteem will deteriorate, and a positive perception of school can be damaged. Take action immediately to find a way to help your child. Spend extra time helping with homework and visit the teacher to get additional suggestions. If the struggle persists, consider getting additional assistance from a professional.

9.

Read EVERY night Incorporate a minimum of 20 minutes reading time every single night. Establish a family reading time whereby everyone has time to read. You’re modeling good reading habits and your children appreciate the quiet time. Reading and writing abilities aren’t just for language arts. Every subject requires reading comprehension and writing proficiency. These skills affect all aspects of learning, especially as your child matures and more is expected in every subject level. Many children do poorly in all subjects, not because they don’t understand them, but because the reading and writing expectations are beyond their capabilities.

10.

Journaling Encouraging your child to keep a daily journal will establish a regular writing routine, while also helping your child use the journal as a release for anxiety. We tend to discount the degree of children’s fears and concerns, but the reality is that with our increasingly busy schedules and high expectations, children’s anxiety issues are on the rise. Establishing a time for your child to write daily in his journal will give him the space to release his angst in a safe place. You’d be surprised how much he’ll begin to look forward to his journal time once you’ve made this a part of his everyday schedule. Hopefully these tips will contribute to a positive school year and continue to encourage your child’s perception that learning is a fun lifelong experience. Remember, school is their “job”, but you’re the superintendent. You still need to supervise and offer support when needed. Without your help, it will be hard for them to climb the ladder of success. INTEREST RATES TOO HIGH? Interest rates are bouncing around 4.25%. Are these “higher” rates affecting the market and at what impact? Looking back over 30 years, we see that 7.25% is the average interest for a residential mortgage. Today, we look at 4.25 as high because memories linger of rates around 3% not too long ago. But understand 3% was unbelievably low (lowest rate in 50 years) and 4.25% is very close. Many economists think 6% is where a good economy should be. Anytime the press uses the words “interest rates” and “raise” in the same sentence the population gets concerned but 4% money is very inexpensive to borrow and buyers should be aggressively shopping. Sellers need not worry that their home will be hard to sell because money is tight. Homes are selling quickly and prices continue to climb. If you or someone you know is planning to buy, acting now will get, in reality, a very low interest rate compared to 6% which is considered “normal”. If you would like to discuss your real estate interests, please call me.

High-Intensity Interval Training Incorporating high-intensity interval training helps build muscle, and speeds weight loss... “ANAHEIM, Calif. – Exercisers seeking a greater bang for their workout buck should consider high-intensity interval training, according to an expert presenting today at the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) 15th-annual Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition.”

I

talk a lot about intensity and truthfully, the one component that is most commonly associated with great results in any kind of fitness program is intensity. Anyone who has been in my boot camps has heard me discuss the benefits, and experienced high-intensity training for themselves. If you want to take your fitness to the next level, get more toned, burn more fat, get in your best shape, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and high-intensity resistance training is what you want. But it gets better! A recent study from ACSM showed that exercisers experienced boosted metabolism and accelerated weight loss 9 times as much in an equivalent amount of time as slow “cardio.” During HIIT, a person consumes more oxygen than in slower, distance exercise, which can increase post-exercise metabolism. Research has shown one session of HIIT can burn calories for 24 hours after exercise. Researchers at ACSM said the real advantage of HIIT versus distance training is that you get all the benefits – such as fat loss, improved muscle

cell function, increased oxygen consumption and improved anaerobic capacity – but you don’t have to exercise as long. HIIT divides a workout into two speeds – intense and rest – and alternates them for a defined period of time. For example, a person could alternate 60 seconds of walking and 60 seconds of sprinting for 25 minutes. HIIT is not limited to running, however. It can be done biking, skating, weight-lifting, stair-climbing and more. Sometimes I do sprint intervals with my dog. We go to the park or the beach, and I throw a toy. She chases the toy and I chase her. In fairness, usually the only time I catch her is after she catches the toy! This type of exercise is not right for everyone. While HIIT is safe for most people – from healthy adults to even patients with coronary heart disease – it does come with an increased risk of injury and may not be safe for some. HIIT can be crazy hard. Always warm up for a long time before starting the intervals. If you have an injury, or if you have not been cleared to exercise, please do not begin a HIIT program until those are resolved.

Native Grains Continued from page 7 I took a year and studied my lifestyle and how I came to my situation. I accepted that my problem was a life-threatening issue and I had no choice but to change. I worked with nutritionists, psychologists and personal trainers. I threw out processed foods and prepared myself mentally for a healthy lifestyle. I adopted a healthy diet, based upon the Mediterranean Diet, and began eating whole foods, stone-milled grains, fruits, vegetables, lean poultry and fish, dairy and water for hydration. It took 8 months, and I lowered my fat from over 40% body fat to under 12%. I eliminated all of my lifestyle diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnea. I went from high weight of over 300 pounds to a strong, lean 175 pounds. It’s been over 6 years, and my life has changed forever. I quit being a consultant and with my son started a food company, Native Grains. I became a certified personal trainer, wrote a book and dedicated my life to educating others. As a Type-2 Diabetic heart disease patient in remission, I have added over 25 years to my life expectancy, with a quality of life that I never imagined possible. You can eat your way to great health, I know! I haven’t been hungry or full or thirsty since I adopted this easy lifestyle. You can too! ecently, I saw a patient in my office who had a complex list of symptoms which had been occurring off and on for a significant period of time. After talking in depth with the mother as well as the patient and doing a thorough physical exam (as I was taught in medical school), I sat down to discuss what I had, or in this case, had not found. The mother quickly asked me, “What do you think it is?” I paused briefly, and then told her, in my most confident doctor voice (also taught to me in medical school), “I have absolutely no idea.” With that, she looked at me as if to say, “I paid a $20 co-pay for that?” But then I continued, “I may not know exactly what is, but I can certainly tell you what it is not.” At which point, I began to list off all of the scary things the mother was afraid of and why I knew it was none of them. And while that answer provided the mother with some comfort, she did not get the answer she was looking for and she was still out her $20. Yet, in that situation, as in many, that was the best I could do. Since the early days of Dr. Kildaire to the now ever popular House, we have been fascinated by the TV medical drama that presents a dying patient with symptoms that no one can figure out, until the doctor with the superhuman brains swoops in to make a diagnosis and a cure in the last 15 minutes of the show, still leaving time for two commercial breaks and closing credits. In these shows, it is all about making the diagnosis, finding the hidden answer. But sometimes, there is no diagnosis to make and the only answer is “I know what it is not.” When I was in training, I was once told by an old doctor, “Being a doctor is learning to accept ambiguity and uncertainty… with as much confidence as possible.” How right he was. On a daily basis, I, like most doctors, am faced with all sorts of symptoms and problems that defy logic and reason or for which there will be no miracle cure. And while we doctors spent many years in school and training to make diagnoses and treatment plans, in reality, we are often much better at telling a patient what their diagnosis is not instead of what their diagnosis is. In medical terminology, we call this a “rule out.” That is, we have asked all the important questions and done any needed laboratory work to comfortably “rule out” a particular diagnosis. Using this process, doctors are able to quickly whittle away many scary possibilities So the next time you go to the doctor with a problem instead of asking, “What do you think it is?”, you may want to ask, “What do you know it is not?”
