Joan Burt

J

oan Burt may be a familiar face to many over the past 28 years of living and serving in the Almaden Valley, where her 3 children attended Almaden Country School, Bret Harte and Leland. Some of her fondest memories are as an Almaden Pop Warner Board Member and Cheer Coach taking her largest Jr. Pee Wee team of 28 girls to become National award winners in Florida in 2004. She had the joy of not only head coaching Mackenzie, her youngest daughter’s team, but loved serving alongside with her oldest, Shannyn, who choreographed and served as a Student Demonstrator. The children’s local activities included gymnastics, dance, Scouts and Little League where her son Cameron focused his Eagle Scout project leading a team to build bat and helmet racks for the AAA diamond in Greystone Park. Mackenzie’s Gold Award project created help to nearby shelters with the 1,000 plus t-shirt bags made for shopping and laundry. Joan’s service to the community included being a Bret Harte Booster Club officer, serving as a member of the Leland Booster Club helping develop the first Denim to Diamonds event, and of course there were numerous years as a Girl Scout leader, and a room mom to name a few. However, Joan is most proud of heading virtue-based Children’s classes and empowerment programs for Junior Youth in a less fortunate area of Almaden Valley. Today, Joan is busy assisting families prepare and protect themselves from financial hardships. As an agent (CA Insurance License # OI52736) with New York Life Insurance Company Joan makes available life and health* insurance products. She has won several awards, including the Long-Term Care Foundation Award**

and Associate LTC Leader** in the area of long term care, and she is authorized to offer products to AARP members through New York Life. Accustomed to working for years in the strategic planning and marketing field in the health care industry, it was a natural progression to embrace how insurance impacts others. “Helping my clients’ protect themselves from long term illnesses, disability and death is most rewarding,” says Joan. “It requires careful saving and planning so it is not lost or ruined by a single event. I watched it happen to my parents.” After working hard their entire lives, Joan’s parents had a strong desire to leave a legacy to their children. “It was tough watching their money meant for my siblings and me end in the need to pay for their medical costs in their final days.” Both passed away in 2015 only months apart and it contributed to Joan’s heartfelt passion to help others avoid that pain. Everyone’s goals and needs are different. There are a lot of ways to build your coverage, so you can create a plan that works for your life and situation. Call Joan at (408) 234-2263 and let her help you, whether it is for a second opinion or to help you get started. It is never too early to start and never too late to fill the gaps in any retirement plan. * Products available through one or more carriers not affiliated with New York Life Insurance Company, dependent on carrier authorization and product availability in your state or locality. ** New York Life sales production achievements. Why Eat Organic? by Corey Tufts, founder Golden Gate Organics

Los Gatos to Novato, and everywhere in between since 2010, Golden Gate Organics is the only CSA-like (Community Supported Agriculture) business of its kind that specializes in 100% organic produce, 100% organic groceries, wide variety, and industry leading account customization features. Check out their 5 star Yelp.com reviews and read why thousands of experienced Bay Area CSA customers have migrated to them from the many businesses with antiquated CSA models. For me, going organic wasn’t about GMOs or synthetic pesticides. It wasn’t about better taste and higher quality food. I chose organic because it’s sustainable and ethical. Organic farmers don’t spray their crops with synthetic fertilizers which would be much cheaper and easier. Instead, they rotate their crops. This requires more labor and is more expensive upfront but it prevents fertilizer runoff that causes toxic algae blooms. Did you know that in 2014 and again in 2015 nearly half a million people in Toledo, OH could not consume their tap water because of a toxic algae bloom caused by industrial agriculture runoff? What if that happened here in the Bay Area? I choose organic meat, eggs, and milk because the animals are raised humanely and ethically. Organically raised animals are not fed hormones and steroids to make them artificially bigger, or harmful antibiotics which are passed on to whomever consumes them. These animals eat organic food, or as your grandparents called it: food.

Once upon a time all food was organic and right now there are too many people counting calories and not enough people counting chemicals. Every time you buy organic you’re persuading more farmers and ranchers to grow organic. Stop waiting for Friday, for spring, or summer to begin eating healthy. Good health is achieved when you stop waiting for it and make the most of the moment you are in now. A healthy person is a happy person. Remember one thing: You are what you eat. Your body makes new cells from the food you eat.

What you eat literally becomes you. You have a choice of what you’re made of. Stop asking why organic food is so expensive and start asking why conventional food is so cheap. Find out more information on organic food at www.goldengateorganics.com.

The Valerie Gold Story Her Battle with er+ pr+ her2- Breast Cancer by Val Gold and Eric Drew

M

y name is Val Gold and I am a 54 year-old healthy woman, and I have been successfully battling breast cancer for 14 years (as I write this now). I was first diagnosed with “er+ pr+ her2- Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma” in January of 2002 at the Santa Teresa Kaiser hospital in San Jose CA. Needless to say I was terrified! I could hardly pronounce this diagnosis, and definitely did not know anything about it. I sure wasn’t qualified to start making life and death decisions about what treatments to do. It was clear, however, that the opinions I was getting from the doctors were conflicting with my own intuition as to how to treat this disease. I was told I needed to have massive surgery within one week (they recommended a mastectomy), or have a lumpectomy to remove most of the tumor, then six weeks of intense radiation. They said maybe if I did the full mastectomy right away, I may not need the radiation part, however, if the tumor came back I would need the mastectomy anyway. Either way they said I would need six months of heavy chemo afterwards just to be sure they got rid of the tumor. It felt like they were pressuring these horrible treatments on me, and it didn’t feel right to me. I looked into the side effects of these procedures, and all of them were going to be very traumatic.

In the case of radiation and chemo, the side affects of these were going to make me very sick. I was a healthy athletic person and it didn’t make sense to make my whole body sick to fight a tumor in my breast. After many severe warnings from the doctors and after all the tests and needle biopsies, I agreed to have a limited initial surgery to extract as much of the tumor as possible, and agreed to have the lumpectomy. However, after the first surgery they said they could not get “a clear margin on the tumor” and needed to go back in. This time they wanted to take out 20 lymph nodes in a “full lymph node dissection”, but I couldn’t imagine traumatizing my body that much without even knowing if these lymph nodes were cancerous, so I only agreed to let them take the first lymph node in line next to the tumor which they referred to as the “Sentinel Node”. This lymph node was cancerous, so they again pushed me to do a “full lymph node dissection”, and again this was counter-intuitive in my opinion. Why take out all these lymph nodes if they are not cancerous. We agreed on a compromise and 8 more lymph nodes were taken out, and in fact all of these were unaffected, so luckily no cancer had spread to these areas. Inside Insider Trading

R

ecently, golfer Phil Mickelson was caught up in a federal investigation linking him to an illegal insider trading scheme. Illegal insider trading generally occurs when someone knowingly buys or sells stock while in possession of material, nonpublic information. Someone who gives the nonpublic information to another person is called a “tipper.” Insider trading laws are based on the simple concept of fairness; the idea that everyone should participate in the stock market with the same information. Allowing someone to act on nonpublic information provides an unfair advantage over investors who don’t have that information. Mickelson was connected to a Las Vegas gambler, Billy Walters, to whom Mickelson owed money. Walters allegedly received information from a director serving on the board of Dean Foods, indicating that the company was expecting to spin out a subsidiary, which would result in a substantial increase in its stock price. Walters then allegedly provided that nonpublic information (i.e. tipped) to Mickelson, which Mickelson then used by investing in Dean Foods. The tip was very good information. Dean Foods shares skyrocketed 40% based on the spinoff, Mickelson made over $900,000 in profit, and Walters made $32 million in profit, while avoiding another $11 million in trading losses. When the smoke cleared, Mickelson is only going to be required to repay the money. Walters is not so lucky, and is being criminally prosecuted by federal authorities. But if Walters and Mickelson both acted on the same information (the tip about the spinoff) in the same way (buying Dean Foods stock), why are they being treated so differently? The answer is that certain behavior that used to be insider trading is now not prosecuted, impacted by a December 2014 ruling by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals held that insider trading requires that a person knowing the nonpublic information provided it in exchange for some benefit. So, if the information is received secondhand, and like Mickelson, you don’t ask or know too much about where it came from, you may be able to use it. The Second Circuit held the benefit had to be significant, being an “exchange that is objective, consequential, and represents at least a potential gain of a pecuniary or similarly valuable nature.” But other Courts of Appeal are not in agreement with the Second Circuit, finding that the “personal benefit” was satisfied when the tipper received reputational benefit, quid pro quo or friendship, not requiring “a meaningful close personal relationship” like the Second Circuit. Now, based on the split of opinions in the Court of Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to decide if giving insider information, while asking for nothing in return, violates the law; in other words, whether love, affection or friendship constitutes a “personal benefit” which is enough to trigger a violation of the law. This will be the first major insider trading case the Supreme Court has heard since 1997. If the Second Circuit opinion is upheld, it seems to open the door to allow insiders to provide information to their friends, family and associates as long as the tipper get nothing in return. Mickelson may still have some time “in the rough.” PGA Tour rules prohibit players from associating with gamblers, which is exactly what Mickelson was doing. Whether there will be discipline from the PGA Tour is still to be seen, but a suspension could ultimately cost Mickelson more than he made in the stock market. (Continued from page 11) After what I consider being bullied by numerous doctors, I did finally agree to have 6 weeks of radiation. I now regret this decision however, as I feel it did more damage than good. I once again have tumors and the only place I have the tumors now is where I was treated with radiation. I am convinced it is a result of the radiation. I also have necrotic (dead) tissue in this area which has caused edema and other issues. In parallel with these treatments, however, I began my search for more natural and less invasive treatments. I followed the writings and story of Suzanne Somers who had done so much research on more natural ways to fight breast cancer, and the first thing I realized I needed to change was my diet. I followed a macrobiotic diet, making sure I ate only organic products. I had previously thought I had a healthy diet, but I realize now I ate too much red meat and dairy. These were quick to be removed from my diet, along with wheat flour and sugar, which cancer loves and feeds on. I did injectable mistletoe, vitamin C infusions, and another natural supplement which was injected into the lymph nodes called 714X. For several years I was stable with no sign of disease, until a tumor appeared under my arm in 2006 (where I had the radiation) and I had it removed with a small surgery. In 2007 I went to Germany and did one of the first Immuno-therapies ever offered, and it seemed to work very well. The Dr. who ran the clinic was Dr. Kubler at the Labor-Praxisklinik in Munich. (www. labor-praxisklinik.de) Since then I have been diligent with an anti-cancer diet and I have taken many anti-cancer supplements. I have been doing very well for many years but the cancer is back, and I am now raising money to do another immune therapy in Santa Barbara that I feel very positive about. Please support me in getting this treatment on my GoFundMe page called “Valerie Gold Stage 4 Cancer”. www.gofundme.com/qeudjb8s If I could go back in time 14 years to my diagnosis, and give myself advice, I would say “Slow down! You are not going to die tomorrow so don’t rush into invasive and potentially damaging treatments and surgeries. Don’t cut that, chop things off, radiate everything, and poison your body with carcinogenic cancer causing substances”. This just doesn’t make sense to me, even now. I want to attack the cancer cells in my body, and help my body fight this cancer, but not kill all the healthy normal cells in the process. I have known tens of other women who followed their medical advice to a tee and did everything that was recommended, and many of them have died. Many others who did survive have severe, permanent, disabling problems. Please keep in touch with me and share the things you have learned in the WeHeal Community for er+ pr+her2- breast cancer. I know that by helping each other and sharing our experiences, we will get through this together! http://weheal.org/groups/erprher2-breast-cancer/ (This is the personal view of the author and not necessarily this magazine.)
