I

t has been great to serve the Almaden community with the 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine over the last decade. Thanks for the support. We have the most amazing people living here, constantly raising the bar and setting new standards to help others. The families in Almaden constantly support our schools and continue to carry on the Almaden reputation of academic excellence. Additionally, we also have fantastic business owners supporting the local schools and charity organizations that could not get by without the generous sponsorships. I am thankful to have enjoyed working with our community to produce this fabulous publication through the years. I am retiring from the publishing business, but will still be promoting businesses via marketing services and doing my best to help charities, so do not hesitate to reach out. I will continue all networking efforts, with a focus on digital and social media.

and rehabilitates dogs and cats from shelters to avoid euthanasia and fosters these pets with love and shelter until they find their “forever-home.” Silicon Valley Cares is an all women volunteer nonprofit organization that raises funds for local non-profit agencies and organizations benefiting children, teens, homeless, crisis situations, and animals. The goal is to raise these funds while bringing the community together for socializing, entertainment, and compassionate involvement with non-profit agencies and organizations. Key sponsors like Heritage Bank, Frank Rimerman, Delucchi Hawn, Skip’s Tires, Barracuda Networks, and Coldwell Banker have partnered with SVC this year to

help raise the awareness and support levels. Eager to support non-profit charities within Santa Clara County and searching for a creative way to do so was the drive behind Kelly Dippel starting Silicon Valley Cares in 2010. “After devoting several years to different non-profit organizations, I formed SVC because I wanted to touch the lives of many people within our community who were struggling without all the drawn out live auctions and speeches that you typically see at other events. My goal was to put more fun into it and as a result, Silicon Valley Cares has achieved tremendous success over the years,” Dippel noted.

Fiscal Year Highlights–

ALSJ year-end president’s report, Pat Passarrelli

F

irst, thank you to our new members ‘class of 2015-16’ who came to us last July and also hosted our annual “charter Luncheon” celebration. “You’ve been enthusiastic from the start.” We have the class of 2016-17 already lined up. This past year our programs have grown and are thriving. We are serving more children and adults as we continue to Make A Difference in our community. This year our Operation School Bell (OSB) uniform program provided 5,408 students at 37 schools with 8,643 school uniforms. This program also provided 2,632 sweatshirts to 23 schools and 350 jackets to 6 schools. Since the beginning of OSB program in 1993 (23 years ago), the records I have, (Thank You, Betty Steinhoff), show that we started with 1 school 51 students and 55 uniforms and since that time we have conservatively clothed 32,841 students with over 50,000 uniforms in 37 schools and that’s a conservative number. Our Readers Are Leaders program has gone from 5 to 9 schools, 21 classrooms to 49 classrooms and from 525 students to 1,264 students. Our readers are reading more often and we are giving a book to each child in addition to the books we donate to each classroom. Kids On The Block performed at 9 schools for 728 children, Caring hands donated 2,683 items to our agencies, Screening Eyes Early screened 513 preschoolers at 14 schools, Hug a Bear gave 755 bears to 7 agencies, Our Bingo programs at 2 facilities continues to make their time with Seniors in our community a rewarding experience, adding new and thoughtful prizes for all participants. We are still looking for a leader for one of those Bingo groups. See Judy Keniston. Our Assist a Shelter program worked 38 2-hour sessions at Cityteam and provided the residents at Family supportive Housing with 12 monthly dinners (766), sponsored 4 enrichment programs attended by 174 children & adults, staffed the Halloween Shoppe, helping 38 children select costumes and we wrapped Christmas gifts for 25 families and donated $890 dollars in Gift Cards to the families at FSH. This year has been the best ever! We received a total of $175,615, ($7,650 more than last year). Of the $175,615, $6,600 is unrestricted leaving $169,845 restricted for OSB, RAL, and HaB. Our various fundraisers raised $28,153 including our Home and Garden Tour which raised $17,513. If we add all unrestricted monies collected this year, from fundraisers, and membership dues that’s $41,113 unrestricted plus the restricted $169,845 for a grand total of $210,958 for all monies received. I also want to celebrate our hard-working committees that provide wonderful lunches for our meetings, our new member welcome event and updates and information on our Strategic Plan. Let’s also celebrate the launching of our new photo directory, our new website, our new Facebook page and a very successful visit with the representatives from our National office. We certainly have made a difference this year. Thank you all for working so hard all year. Congratulations!
