2015 Napa Valley Film Festival Celebrity Tribute

T

he Lincoln Theater hosted the Celebrity Tributes, honoring John Travolta with the Legendary Actor Tribute, presented by Freemark Abbey, Keegan-Michael Key with the Trailblazer Tribute, and Lydia Hearst, Evan Peters and Finn John Travolta (honoree) and Wittrock each received the Kelly Preston Rising Star Tribute presented by Domaine Chandon. Bruce Dern (Legendary Actor Tribute) and Zoe Kazan (Rising Star Tribute) sent in video messages to accept their honors. Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush took the stage with the honorees for intimate conversations about their careers, achievements, and plans for the future. The Festival, held from November 11-15 screened 120 films showcasing the year’s best new independent films in 12 unique theater venues in the four postcard-perfect towns of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga. This highly recommended annual event provides an outstanding week of film, food and wine. Visit their website and mark your calendar to attend their 2016 event. If you enjoy films it is well worth it. 06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

During the Awards Ceremony, Lexus and The Weinstein Company also announced the four winners of the third annual Lexus Short Film Series. Selected from thousands of submissions, Alexis Michalik, Byoung-Gon Moon, Damian Walshe-Howling and Pippa Keegan-Michael Key (honoree) Bianco received their honors at the Uptown Theatre. The four finalists will create new short films around the theme of “anticipation,” receive promotional distribution support, participate in a tour of top film festivals around the world and receive an at-home filmmaking and editing suite to further bring their imagination and passion to life. Festival Co-Founders and Directors Marc and Brenda Lhormer are pleased to announce the completion of another successful festival stating, “It’s been an absolutely amazing 5th anniversary for our festival, with an outstanding lineup of films paired with fantastic and unique culinary and wine events. It has been our pleasure to share such compelling stories with our audiences and host such creative storytellers for another year here in

Lydia Hearst (honoree) Evan Peters (honoree) Napa Valley. The addition of this year’s Lexus Short Film Series makes it even more special as we will welcome these filmmakers back again next year to showcase their completed projects, shown together for the first time.” “The festival has a lot of diversity which I cherish and still the program is not overly big,” said Jury Member, journalist and HFPA member, Dierk Sindermann. “Here it’s condensed and accessible, with the most beautiful venues. The whole community seems to be a part of it, which is really impressive. Even the smallest movies are always packed. And, I really enjoy that there are Q&As after the screenings. They are always so interesting. I go to a lot of festivals and the whole concept of this festival works, and a little Hollywood impact doesn’t hurt either.” Festival goers were treated to the red carpet and world premiere

Billy Bush, Access Hollywood Finn Wittrock (honoree) screening of Life on the Line. Cast members John Travolta and Devon Sawa walked the red carpet along with producers Phillip Glasser and Marvin Peart, and actress Kelly Preston. Local Napa area PG&E linemen, who were the first heroic responders during the 2014 Napa earthquake and recent Lake County wildfire, joined the red carpet welcome and screening.

Behind the ‘Seams’ at the Nutcracker

olunteer seamstresses, led by Creative Director Christine Ryvola, create over 250 professional-quality, handmade costumes for Los Gatos Ballet’s Nutcracker. Most people do not realize that creating ballet costumes, particularly tutus, is a dying art. Even some major ballet companies are hard-pressed to create costumes of this caliber. In April 2015, Newsweek Magazine ran an article about how the shortage of costume and tutu-makers has put ballet in a crisis. Los Gatos Ballet’s level of costume design, materials and construction, particularly done by volunteers, is a rare commodity. “Our costumes are designed to be a visual feast from the moment the first dancer steps onto the stage, yet they must allow for extensive movement and stand up the rigors of strong dancers. Designing and sewing for ballet is like making evening gowns that have to function like athletic wear.” says Ryvola. More than 30 volunteers dedicate themselves to this art. “I love doing very detailed work.” says software engineer and seamstress Renee Shaeffer. Educator and seamstress Cristina Burkett says, “I embellish the bodices and tutus of the lead dancers with Swarovski crystals, ribbon flowers, fabric flowers, and beads. Our costumes are made with the finest materials and are one-of-a-kind. I spend a lot of time thinking about the layout and playing around with the embellishments. I also start over if I’m not happy with the results, so the process is long and tedious...but oh so inspiring. It’s emotional to hand over the costume to the dancer because I’ve poured my heart into it and have sacrificed so much to get it done.” 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Most of Ryvola’s volunteers do not come with an extensive background in sewing. “When I signed up for the costume committee, I thought I was signing up to help the little girls get into their costumes. I had no sewing experience! So, you can imagine my shock when I went to the first meeting and was handed a pair of scissors to start cutting patterns. Christine Ryvola noticed that I enjoyed detail work and handed me a bodice to work on.” said Burkett. “Ms. Ryvola has an amazing way of bringing out the best in all of us volunteers… her ability to spread the work out among our varying abilities, allows us to create beautiful costumes in relatively quick time.” says psychologist and seamstress Lisa Kite. Ms. Ryvola has also brought costuming classes to her volunteers by hosting the West Coast Tutu School at the Los Gatos Ballet studios in 2014. Several volunteers attended and learned the art of making various kinds of tutus, bodices, leotards, dance dresses, tiaras, dyeing, draping, and pattern making. “I attended the Tutu School and learned the art of making romantic tutus (the ones that are long and flowing). I learned so much and hope that these classes are offered again.” said photographer and seamstress Dena Crawford. “We are very fortunate to have such talented and dedicated volunteers. These ladies are incredible!” says Ryvola. When asked why these volunteers devote so much time to costumes, they said, “I help create something that makes my heart soar when I see the dancers wearing them.” said Crawford. • Dec 4-6, Tickets available at: LosGatosBallet.org

Therapy Stress, Depression and the Holidays

S

Almaden Valley Counseling Service

tress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression. The holiday season can bring guests that we do not look forward to. The holidays bring seasonal demands — celebrations, family togetherness, parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name a few. From Thanksgiving through Christmas and into New Year’s Eve. Here are some tips to minimize stress that accompanies the holidays. You may end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought. What Causes Holiday Stress? When stress is at its peak, it’s hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past. Moderation is the key to enjoying the best the season has to offer without wallowing in regret later. The holidays are a time when extended families tend to gather. While this can be a wonderful thing, even the most close-knit families can overdose on togetherness time. Many families also have ‘roles’ each member falls into that have more to do with who individuals used to be rather than who they are today. Many a grown adult has found themselves suddenly returning to twelve year old status after getting together with the family that remembers them when. For those who don’t have these family issues, but who rely more on friends for this kind of support the rest of the year, loneliness or feeling left out can be an even bigger problem. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is an often unrecognized problem that comes with the holiday season and is actually a by-product of the seasons changing from fall to winter. Tips for Coping Be realistic and lower your expectations. The holidays don’t have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well and should be viewed as fluid and healthy events that can and will change. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating something new. For example, if your adult children can’t come to your house, find new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails or videos. Recognize what you are feeling. If someone close to you has recently died or you can’t be with loved ones, realize that it’s normal to feel sadness and grief. You can’t force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season. Not acknowledging your feelings will oftentimes make you feel worse. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. 10 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don’t try to buy happiness by overspending on gifts. Try these alternatives: • Donate to a charity in someone’s name. • Give homemade gifts. • Start a family gift exchange. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan menus and then make a shopping list. This will help prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients. Don’t be afraid to make a list of family and friends to help with clean up too. Being a martyr is unhealthy; don’t do all the work yourself. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. Friends and colleagues will understand if you can’t participate in every project or activity. If it’s not possible to say no when your boss asks you to work overtime, try to remove something else from your agenda to make up for the lost time. Keep up with healthy habits. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Try these suggestions: • Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don’t go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. • Get plenty of sleep. • Incorporate regular physical activity into each day. Breathe. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Practice mindfulness which helps reduce stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. Some options may include: • Taking a walk at night and stargazing. • Listening to soothing music. • Getting a massage. • Reading Seek professional help. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. This year to conquer the stress of the Holiday Season make a plan and stick to it so that the Holiday Season doesn’t conquer you.

Winter fashions were modeled by students. Bellarmine President Chris Meyercord was joined by BMG President Deb Vallner to kick off the Fashion Show.

Winter Wonderland–

Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild 2015 Fashion Show for Financial Aid How long was the planning process?

The planning starts right after the last Fashion Show ends so a year of coordination and planning. A Chair Elect spends the year training with the Current Chair and immediately take over once the Fashion Show is done.

How many parents are on the committee?

There are over 250 parent volunteers who have helped in all facets of the production, from costumes, model training, underwriting solicitation, program ads, etc.

How many sub-committees of volunteers are there?

There are 8 core team sub-committees, 10 Business committees and 13 Production committees.

How many years have they been holding this event?

This was the 61st year- from its humble beginnings from a backyard garden to now hosting over 800 for the lunch show and 1000+ for dinner at the Fairmont.

Where does it take place and how many attend? How many kids are in the show?

Typically held in the 2nd or 3rd week of November, the show has 80+ teen models (approximately 40 Bellarmine students plus local senior girls as well as sports teams and clubs such as Hockey, Varsity Football and Robotics).

How many students does it help?

All the funds raised go directly to the Financial Aid Endowment. The 12 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

funds help approximately 25% of the student population so nearly 400 students who otherwise may not be able to afford Bellarmine.

How long is the event?

The event is a lunch and dinner show held on the same day at the Fairmont San Jose. “The Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild is excited to put together a memorable show to commemorate sixty years of supporting financial aid at Bellarmine. Through our work on the fashion show, we help support families and their deserving young men so that they can experience the Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person,” explained Susan Bunce, 2015 Winter Wonderland Chair. “Our school strives to provide fair economic access to families of qualified students through affordable tuition and financial aid. With our admission process being need-blind, we admit qualified students who reflect the broad spectrum of our community and provide the support necessary for each admitted student to complete his high school education,” states Chris Meyercord, Bellarmine’s President. Nearly 25 percent of the student body receives tuition assistance, with Bellarmine providing $4.1 million in financial aid during this school year (the highest of any private high school in California). Last year’s fashion show raised over $400,000 in net funds to benefit the Direct Financial Aid Fund and the Financial Aid Endowment. For 163 years, Bellarmine has maintained the Jesuit tradition of educating adolescents while developing them to be ‘men for others.’ Through their efforts with this long-standing annual fashion show, the Bellarmine mothers are role models for their sons, exemplifying what it means to be women for others.

Experienced Care- Close to Home!

Happy Birthday to... Everyone!

Y

ou may have noticed that any time you were in a restaurant and heard the staff singing for someone’s birthday, the song was almost never the “Happy Birthday to You” version that we all sing at home on every birthday. Why was that? Well, it was not because the busboy was an aspiring songwriter who was finally getting his shot promoting his own version of the birthday song at the local Chili’s. Copyright law prohibits the “performance” of copyrighted materials by anyone who is not permitted by the copyright holder to perform that “work.” Based on copyright law, restaurants are not allowed to play unlicensed music over their speakers, and their workers are not allowed to perform unlicensed music. Some estimate that the publisher holding the rights to the Happy Birthday to You song has collected as much as $2 million a year in licensing royalties. However, it looks like that gravy train may have just ended based on a federal judge’s ruling last month, when he decided that the lyrics to Happy Birthday to You were not protected by copyright, and as a result, Warner/Chappell did not have a valid claim to the song lyrics. Without a copyright claim, royalties can no longer be collected when the song is performed -- whether in movies, TV shows, or even restaurants. For a very long time, it was believed that a company named Summy Co. had rightfully acquired the rights to the Happy Birthday to You lyrics in 1935, which were later transferred to Birch Tree Group, then ultimately transferred to Warner/Chappell when Warner/Chappell acquired Birch Tree in 1998. The original music melody for Happy Birthday to You goes all the way back to an 1893 piece of sheet music that included the song “Good Morning to All” written by sisters Mildred and Patty Hill. The lyrics to Happy Birthday to You were later added to that song’s melody. Based on the facts, the Court found the melody had entered the public domain (and so, was no longer protected by copyright law) no later than 1949. With that finding, the only fight left was over the copyright to the lyrics. In reviewing the facts, the Court found the Hill sisters had not tried to protect their right to the lyrics, even after Happy Birthday to You became commonly performed and commercially valuable. In fact, 40 years after writing Good Morning to All, the sisters finally claimed their rights to the melody, but even then, did not claim that they had rights to the lyrics. The Court pointed to evidence that the Hill sisters had transferred their rights in a number of other songs to the Hill Foundation, but the rights to Happy Birthday to You lyrics were not among the rights they transferred. Based on the facts, the Court found that, even if the Hill sisters had certain “common law” rights in the lyrics, those rights were not transferred to Summy Co. Since they were never transferred to Summy Co., they were never transferred to Birch Tree Group, which also meant they were never transferred to Warner/Chapell. It seems Warner/Chapell’s loss is everyone else’s gain. So, the next time you have a birthday you are celebrating, sing Happy Birthday to You loud and sing it proud… and sing it for free… without worrying about getting sued because of it!

special thank you to those who came out for the holiday event we had with Santa! While serving at Amato Pizza with my father, I learned that bringing teamwork, the community together, and maintaining a high quality in the job are the main core principles to any success and that is what I am bringing to my clients in the Real Estate field! I am a raised product of this community and have enjoyed San Jose and Almaden living to the fullest! Now it is time to contribute my expertise and passion of this area to the industry! I know the ins and outs of this valley and would be honored to represent you on any real estate needs you might have. – Amin Rafsanjani
