t times it is easy to forget why we donate time or funds to charities. It is so much more than a tax write off. Yes, events are great - we enjoy them and it brings us around likeminded individuals. It is important, however, to appreciate people in need, as they come in many forms. It is with a saddened heart that we include a story this issue of a local teenager who is suffering tremendously and living life with constant pain and reminders that she is suffering an illness that will take her life prematurely, according to statistics. She does have a very humble wishlist and go fund me account and she let us include the information in her article. We also highlight other residents who selflessly raise money for others that are less fortunate and in some cases, terminally ill. It makes one realize there are so many individuals suffering who truly can not control their destiny. I am thankful we have so many caring neighbors, going the ‘extra mile’ in this community. LG TM

hen it comes to France cruises, it’s hard to imagine a more enjoyable one than gliding along the Rhône through the vineyard country from which come some of the world’s most exceptional wines. But first... meet us on the Champs Élysées for a welcome dinner at a Parisian brasserie long known as a celebrity hangout... walk through a city neighborhood called “Le Marais,” where stylish galleries and peaceful squares line twisting streets that have witnessed the marks of history... travel to Lyon, where eating well is a time honored tradition. Set off on your Rhône River cruise through one of the first wine-producing regions on Earth, stopping to explore villages along its banks; here ancient roots meet contemporary charm. See a 14th-century palace designed for papal splendor... ochre cliffs, Roman ruins, a medieval abbey, a game of pétanque... and a Roman aqueduct’s design that remains a lasting beauty. En route, taste an aged Beaujolais, a Côtes du Rhône direct from the source, world-renowned chocolates, and superb cheeses.

Los Gatos Tire & Auto RepairA Family-Operated Business

S

ince 1977, there has been a family in the South Bay keeping other families safe on the road; the Skip’s family of Skip’s Tire & Auto Repair Centers. In December of 2013, Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair, a franchise of Skip’s, proudly opened their doors to begin serving the Los Gatos community. Like the other five Skip’s locations, Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair is a one stop shop for customer’s tire and complete auto repair needs. With over 40,000 in stock tires available at the Skip’s warehouse, Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair has access to any brand of tire and guarantees the lowest out the door price on tires and wheels. Keeping it in the family, Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair is operated by Skip’s son-in-law Andrew Crowley. Being a franchise of Skip’s gives Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair access to 38 years of knowledge through experience in the industry and the Skip’s family is proud to have its first franchise location. For most consumers, buying tires and paying for routine maintenance on their vehicles doesn’t have the same excitement as purchasing a new television or new pair of shoes. Many people don’t give tire purchasing or automotive repairs much thought until it’s too late. Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair hopes by providing exceptional service at a good value, that their customers will leave feeling their money was well spent. Confidence and peace of mind that their customers are safe on the road is Los Gatos Tire’s main focus.

Los Gatos Tire & Auto is extremely proud to do business in the beautiful town of Los Gatos. They even offer loaner bicycles for customers to explore all there is to do downtown or take a ride along the water at Vasona Lake. Located on University Avenue, next door to Los Gatos Meats they are in a prime location. As a family owned business they enjoy doing business in small communities. It gives better opportunity to get to know customers with more of a personal touch. Both Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair and Skip’s Tire & Auto Repair Centers believe it is extremely important to support the community that supports and chooses to do business with them. They often donate time, services and sponsorship

throughout the year. Many of their requests come from their customers for causes they believe in and support. Los Gatos Tire gives thoughtful consideration to each one and appreciates the opportunity to do so. A few of their recent contributions include the Los Gatos High School Football program, Jazz on the Plazz and Silicon Valley Cares. When they first opened their doors a year and half ago, the community was extremely welcoming. Neighboring businesses began doing business with Los Gatos Tire and vice versa. The first priority was to build up trust and a good rapport with customers. These customers then started recommending Los Gatos Tire & Auto and services they provide. Andrew believes a satisfied customer is the best advertising you can have to promote your business, especially in a small town like Los Gatos, “We are very thankful for our customers and local neighboring businesses that have promoted us and spoken so highly of Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair.” The Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair team’s hard work and dedication to satisfied customers has proven a success, as they were awarded in June of 2015 The Small Business, Big Applause award from the Town of Los Gatos.

If you haven’t already given Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair a try and you find yourself realizing your vehicle is in need of a little TLC stop in and experience the wide selection of tire brands and Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair’s guaranteed lowest out the door price on tires and wheels. Let the Los Gatos Tire & Auto Repair family keep your family safe on the road.

Smaller is Better– Try a River Cruise

W

hat? You’ve never been on a river cruise because you dislike the idea of a large ship and traveling with thousands of people? If so, I have two words for you: river cruise. Cruising is a luxurious form of travel: romantic destinations, great food and wine, and lots of pampering. River cruising offers the best of all of this in an intimate, elegant setting. Numbers vary, but river ships generally accommodate 20-160 passengers. There’s no dealing with crowds, and the small-ship experience gives you the opportunity to get to know fellow passengers and includes open seating for meals.

River cruising is a great way to explore popular inland cities all over the world– places that cannot be reached by large ships. Popular destinations include Prague, Paris, Vienna and Budapest. More exotic locales include Vietnam and Mekong, Egypt and the Nile, China and the Yangtze, safari on the Chobe in Botswana, and-the most popular river cruise today – the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar. River cruises definitely have something for everyone. Among the most popular are wine cruises on rivers throughout Europethe Danube, Rhone, Saone and Mosel. Other themes include art cruises, beer cruises, specially themed cruises (e.g. Jewish

heritage), jazz cruises and Christmas cruises. River ships dock right in town so it’s easy and convenient to walk to cafes, markets or museums. The ships provide organized tours to major attractions or you can explore on your own. Many ships also provide bicycles as an alternate touring activity. River cruising is currently the hottest way to travel. In 2014 more than 30 river ships made debuts with companies including Viling, Avalon, Uniworld, and the top-rated AMA Waterways. There are also American river cruises on the Columbia, Snake, Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers. The American Queen Steamboat Company offers themed cruises– including the Civil War, Elvis, and Mark Twain– on a classic wedding-cake style red and white paddlewheeler. The river cruise experience is leisurely travel. Between destinations there is time to relax, lounge on the deck and watch the landscape drift by, soak in a hot tub, or enjoy spa facilities. For an unforgettable travel experience and an enticing itinerary enjoyed in an intimate setting, make your next vacation on a river cruise. Call Travel Advisors of Los Gatos (408) 354-6531 today to book yours.

7th Annual LG Plein Airgetting better every year

I

t’s almost summer and that means it’s time to get ready for the 7th Annual Los Gatos Plein Air Fine Art Exhibit & Sale! This is the only Plein Air event in the Bay Area and is not to be missed. Presented by the Los Gatos Morning Rotary, this fundraiser supports local art and science programs for youth, and has become a widely anticipated community event. What is Plein Air? Plein Air refers to painting ‘in the open air’ or outdoors to capture the essence of a landscape or subject, by incorporating natural light, motion and color. For 2015, the event includes a great line-up of 34 nationally acclaimed plein air artists. The juried artists hail from throughout the U.S., and include many local well-known artists from Los Gatos, Campbell, and San Jose. The artists arrived in town June 16th and had 4 days to paint within a 20 mile radius of Los Gatos. In previous years, we heard that people wanted to observe the artists painting, but didn’t know when or where to look. So, this year a day was set aside for all the artists to paint in the town of Los Gatos. All in all there are lots of opportunities to meet the artists, and view and purchase the original fine art created during the week. Here’s a full listing of the planned events: Painting the Town Thursday, June 18th, all day Check the Facebook page to find out more about the artists and their favorite places to paint.

VIP Artists’ Choice Reception & Silent Auction California Café, Los Gatos. Friday, June 19, 7-10 p.m.: Ticket price $125, available at www.lgpleinair.org. Meet the artists, enjoy fine wine and small plates specially crafted by the chef for the event. Artists will select one of their paintings from the week. Each of the paintings will be awarded to the highest bidder at the silent auction. Early registration is recommended for this traditionally sold-out event. Plein Air Fine Art Exhibit & Sale, Los Gatos Town Plaza Saturday, June 20, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Free admission The hundreds of fine art oils, pastels and watercolors are available to view and purchase. Wine tasting from Santa Cruz Mountain wineries, live music, face painting and art sessions for kids 4 years old and up will also be featured. Open to the public. Giving Back, Getting Noticed, & Making Changes Silicon Valley Cares

K

elly has been involved with non-profits for decades. “I feel that it is our duty to give back and I actually get so much out of it personally. I decided to start something different, something that didn’t focus on just one disease, one area, or one group of people,” shares Kelly Dippel. With Kelly’s event planning background and direct personality, she started a unique, fun, ‘no drama’ organization that brought people together and at the same time raised money for multiple organizations. Six years ago, she pitched her idea to a group of like-minded people and Silicon Valley Cares (SVC) was formed and the Broomstick Ball (BSB) came to life. The BSB is a unique Halloween costume party focusing on FUNdraising. There are NO live auctions and NO long speeches. What you can expect at the BSB is a delicious dinner, casino play, silent auction, entertainment, music and a group of guests and members that love to dance the night away. SVC just celebrated their 5th year of success. Since starting Silicon Valley Cares, the women-only membership has continued to grow to over 60 members and they keep it fun and

drama free. Their main focus is giving back to the community, but they also have socials, and networking amongst the members. “I love this group of women,” comments Kelly. Three years ago, SVC members added a golf tournament called the ParTee Classic and it is just that, a huge party with 18 holes of golf at Cinnabar Hills. This shotgun, best ball tournament includes lunch, dinner and (true to founder Kelly Dippel’s exciting and vibrant personality) almost every hole has a theme with costumed volunteers complimenting their theme.

Awards

Kelly’s hard work and dedication has amassed a handful of awards such as: 2011 Business Journal Women of Influence, 2014 Junior League of San Jose Certificate of Appreciation, 2014 City of San Jose Certificate of Recognition, 2014 County of Santa Clara Certificate of Commendation. Prestigiously knighted in 2015 by The Knights of St. John (The Order being over 900 years old.)

y fairytale wedding to Ken took place in a tiny fishing village in the Greek Isles. The necessary legal announcements (translated into Greek) were published in the only weekly island newspaper and preceded our arrival on the island. Our novelty caught the attention of the entire Greek village. We knew no one and no one knew us but our Greek best man and bridesmaid who traveled with us, from the U.S. The villagers welcomed us as we sailed on a boat past white plaster buildings clinging to the cliffs and into the marina. The buildings, blindingly white, were like a cookie filling between a cloudless blue sky and the turquoise water of the Aegean Sea. Tasos, a young Greek shop keeper selling goods at the street market, was first to greet us. A cordial entrepreneur, he immediately became our pro bono wedding planner assisting us with flower selections and translating - a real wedding officiant. The graciousness of the village people continued to unfold as we left the single-room, 200-year-old court house as husband and wife. Villagers stood on both sides of the pathway throwing flower petals at our feet and pressing gifts into our hands. They walked us to a taverna covered in a canopy of blooming bougainvillea. To our surprise the village had set up a wedding feast. The portico spun with wine and ouzo. The traditional Greek music caused all to burst into dancing and clapping around us, the newlyweds. Generosity came naturally to host the Americans who honored their island for this union. The villagers celebrate love, family, community and friendship. When it came time to leave by sailboat, our new friends saw us off. Tasos, what a character he was! He hugged and slapped Ken on the back and said “you come back in one year and bring a son and we will have another party.” Ahh, those Greek men and their vision for regeneration. The cordiality of the Greek people left me permanently blessed. Our wedding took place 30 years ago. The experience made me want to “be a better giver” to others as so much had been given to me that trip. It was only two weeks after our big fat Greek wedding that Ken and

I moved to Los Gatos from the land of McMansions in Dallas. The natural setting of Los Gatos vs. the man-made grandeur of Dallas was compatible with our new lives. We engaged new friends and found that Los Gatos was not so much “man-made” as it was “made-good” by many who subscribed to the “be a better giver” philosophy. In the first six years of marriage we lived through three devastating natural disasters: fire, mudslide and earthquake. Each destroyed to a large degree - our home, work and community. We lived in our SUV for months after our house was made uninhabitable. With each disaster the landscape became more fragile but the community foundations became stronger as we received and gave support. I learned it’s not about the “stuff”, it’s about the “experience”. This has led me in many fulfilling ways to offer experiences to others which are remembered long after the “stuff” is gone. This was best accomplished when we co-founded an Eco-resort far from any city on the Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico. The resort was part business and part philanthropy. That’s what it’s called when you open a tiny resort for business one day and 911 happens the next day. You don’t make much money but you provide jobs for the village and everyone who visits has a healing experience. The newly built 9-suite resort clung to the cliffs overlooking the Sea and was highly rated by travel magazines and guidebooks. It was near a tiny fishing village with kindly people reminiscent of those at my big fat Greek wedding. They were proud of what they owned, though to outsiders they had nothing if it was about the “stuff”. Yet the villagers had everything to share. They guided our guests on nature hikes in the arroyo, horseback to oasis and snorkeling with sea life. The language barrier was broken by facial expressions and visible love of where they lived and a chance to share it. I ran sales and marketing from Los Gatos. I turned some guest inquiries away if we agreed this departure experience (no tv, internet or cell) wasn’t right for them. It was high-tech withdrawal for some

husbands whose wives insisted on this alone time with no outside access. We offered great nature experiences and the importance of those missed cell calls faded like the sunsets into the sea. Resort guests left transformed by the sense of the local community that welcomed them. Like a turtle, we can take our community with us. I’ve been nourished by opportunities to give and receive in Los Gatos. Early child rearing was my favorite job. It taught me volunteering pays big bucks in “soul” dollars. I continue to enjoy children as a 15-year volunteer with Art Docent of Los Gatos, going into the grade school to teach visual arts. I love watching people celebrate friendship and community to the backdrop of Jazz Plazz where I’ve joined many wonderful volunteers in its production. I love fundraising for this community and participating in events. It’s satisfying to give, and the options are not just money; there’s giving time, attitude, and ideas. These are all welcome and equally vital. Besides “begging” for charity donations, I enjoy our son’s success at Baja off-road racing, our rescue dog made from spare parts and learning from hubby Ken who is “a better giver” than me.

Julie’s Graceful Struggle with Cystic Fibrosis

W

hy is it that tragic occurrences happen to the most beautiful people inside and out? One of our dearly loved neighbors, 19 year old Julie Phillips, has been living day to day with immense amounts of treatments and medication to fight for her life. In the month of May alone, Julie shares, “I will take 560 enzymes and 250 vitamins. I will do 62 puffs of Advair, 124 puffs of Xopenex and 15 sinus rinses. I will spend 1,860 minutes doing breathing treatments; that’s 182 vials of medicine and 62 vest treatments.” Julie’s home nurse will come once this month to flush her port in her chest so she does not get any clots or infections. This struggle is due to a genetic disorder by the name of Cystic Fibrosis. According to researchers from cff.org, 70,000 people worldwide have this defective gene, but only 30,000 U.S. citizens have it---that is about the population of Los Gatos. The month of May, however, reflected an estimate of the past 228 months of Julie’s life. Julie has been fighting this battle to the best of her ability, but sometimes these treatments and ingesting hundreds of pills are still not enough as she finds herself being admitted to the hospital for a minimum of two weeks due to bacteria finding its way into her lungs or a drop in lung function. According to the Mayo Clinic staff, cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder affiliated mainly with the digestive system and lungs. This disorder is life threatening as cystic fibrosis affects cells generating mucus, sweat and digestive fluids. CF turns an individual’s ordinary fluids from fine and slippery to thick and sticky, leading to blocking passages typically located in the lungs and pancreas. Because of constant treatments and repetitive hospital visits, Julie struggles to have the opportunity to travel. She has learned to fully appreciate the little things in life for she would rather be enjoying her day than being stuck in a hospital room with little or nothing to do.

Despite fighting a battle every day, Julie strives to live a normal life. Many individuals can understand the costly expenses after a hospital trip, but medical bills spanning over a lifetime can quickly consume someone’s budget. Finances have become even more difficult to keep on top of than before. Julie, with great support from friends and family, has been able to keep up with her treatments, but struggles to live a “normal” life as it is difficult to afford things such as healthy food options to sustain her health from stores like Whole Foods and Stanford Shopping Mall food. Julie was hospitalized recently in the month of November (and December) 2014 for a whole month being left with hospital food and occasional home-cooked meals brought by her mother and friends. It is difficult to get Julie the meals due to the costly commute to Stanford and back not to mention buying so many pricey meals. There was a time where Julie’s best friend Hailey came to visit Julie, and when they ordered food, Hailey said, “once when we ordered pork chops from the hospital room service menu, they were not only cold when they got to Julie’s room, but when you poked the pork chop with your finger it was hard and rubber like.” This was one of the first reasons Julie created a GOFUNDME account. Julie wanted to be able to at least enjoy her meals while undergoing isolation in her hospital room, not being able to leave due to a life-threat of exposure to external bacteria in the hospital. Plus, being stuck in a hospital room for such a long period of time can be uneventful and tough; having some extra cash to meet some of Julie’s needs is extremely helpful when money is tight. Julie loves traveling, but often times, cystic fibrosis seems to get in the way of the possibility to go places making it difficult to successfully seek

out her goal. In eighth grade, for instance, her middle school, Los Gatos Christian, offered a New York and Washington D.C. trip that she was not able to attend. Most kids in her grade were given the personal choice to attend or not, but Julie’s choice was taken away as she could not partake with her fellow classmates due to a physical cause. Julie was diagnosed with a deadly bacteria in her lungs and had to have an I.V. stuck in her arm for two weeks to treat it. As she was here in California resting with her I.V. and taking care of her treatments, Julie missed out on what was said to be “one of the most memorable trips of a lifetime” with her classmates. More recently, Julie’s family traveled to Disneyland over winter break, but she was hospitalized for a month, and due to the isolation inconvenience, she was not able to make the trip. Even short trips to cheer on the San Francisco Giants or digging her toes in the sand at Santa Cruz are events she loves, yet are sometimes not possible for her to enjoy due to spontaneous hospital admissions. One of Julie’s huge goals is to be able to travel more throughout the world even though traveling is easier said than done due to cystic fibrosis. Being required to wear a mask in the airport and on multiple hour plane rides and having to lug around heavy medical equipment becomes difficult when traveling. In January 2014, the organization, Make A Wish, was able to send Julie, her mom and her 15 year old sister, Lynsey, to New York--she was finally able to live out her eighth grade trip without having to worry about costs and I.V. antibiotics! She dreams to not stop there with her travels, but to continue on to visiting New York again, Seattle and further to Italy, New Zealand and Alaska. She finds all these places astonishing and wishes to explore new cities. Julie is very passionate and appreciative of new experiences when she is given the opportunity to get out of the area. Throughout these hardships, Julie has learned to appreciate life to the fullest. As the positive and inspirational young woman she is, Julie not only takes her relationships with friends and family very seriously, but has grown to appreciate all the support gained from her loved ones such as her family, friends and even strangers. Julie has known Hailey ever since birth and finds herself blessed to have found an individual that has never left her side. Hailey believes her “favorite thing about Julie is whenever you see Julie enter the room, she is a bright light. Everyone knows there is something special about her”. Not only has Julie touched Hailey’s life, but she has touched all those around her; specifically others with cystic fibrosis. Although Julie is not able to meet others with CF face-to-face because they could share harmful bacteria with each other, they have grown close relationships through meeting via social media. It is helpful to be able to reach out to others going through similar steps and support each other during the process. As I asked Julie how she has gotten through all of her many rough patches with cystic fibrosis, she told me her relationship with Jesus has been a huge part of her positive outlook on life. At the end of the day, it is her relationship with Christ who brings joy into difficult circumstances. Encouraging others and telling others about the abundant life, constant joy and never-ending hope found in Jesus has always been Julie’s passion. She will be transferring to California Baptist University this fall to begin her major in Christian Studies in hopes to become a well-known blogger and motivational speaker. By transferring to a private university and moving to a different city, she will not only be surrounding herself in an environment in which she loves, but she will further be able to check graduating college off on her bucket list! Before I knew about Julie Phillip’s sickness, she had already been an idol of mine since the first day I met her freshman year of Leland High School. She has the warmest heart and attempts to make everyone feel welcomed. Her humble personality can make anyone feel safe and comfortable around her. Once I learned about Julie’s sickness, she was not only an idol but a hero. In celebration of Cystic Fibrosis month, Julie approached me not only to write this article about her and her battle against CF, but to write it raising awareness for the other 70,000 individuals living with this life-threatening disorder. Because it is very rare, not many individuals have heard of this sickness let alone had an understanding of what these individuals have to go through every day just to stay alive. With a smile on her face, Julie continues to encourage others through social media, reminding people to not take life for
