Springtime

I

have a spring in my step and it may be from hiking among the wild flowers my favorite time of the year, or it may be because I am ready to go on vacation thanks to Travel Advisors of Los Gatos (off to Cabo next week), or it may be because I am a new student at Arthur Murray of Los Gatos and I am getting my groove back. Regardless, there are many things to be thankful for. The Los Gatos real estate market continues to shine and businesses are thriving. It is great to see the Los Gatos Theatre remodel for instance. What a splendid structure, designed with just the right amount of Hollywood glam and chic, mixed with modern technology. The location (and kudos on the balcony) and historical aspect have a lot to offer and I am thankful the new owners took this refurbishing task on with such passion offering splendid results. I wish them well. Make sure to see a movie, a performance or rent the private room with the big screen for your next event. The Los Gatos community continues to promote the arts, from dancing (classical ballet to salsa to two-step) to canvas (don’t miss the Plein Air Show) and we cover plenty of these topics in this issue. There are many opportunities to get involved as well. Even the youth safety outreach program CASA, designed to keep Los Gatos High School kids safe and avoid substance abuse, is dabbling in the arts as they held a fabulous fashion show at the new theatre and it was very successful. As a mother of teenagers myself, I am extemely impressed with this program and do hope it is mimicked in other counties. Great example Los Gatos. As I mentioned, I am off on a much needed vacation next week. I highly recommend calling Travel Advisors of Los Gatos and planning your vacation. It is important to get away at times and reflect on life as it passes us by so fast. Until you do your research, you don’t know what you are missing. LG

ou will find only experienced and passionate travel agents at Travel Advisors. We invite you to take one of our consultants on a test drive, and let us plan your next vacation. Please attend one of our travel seminars as well, and meet our existing clients, or read the agents’ specialties (opposite page) to understand a few of the many benefits of having an agency behind you. We can hold reservations with no penalties; make travel changes for you; often find direct flights when the Internet claims there are none; fill you in on the latest political climate of an international destination; make you aware of special promotions available that will save you money; explain weather and other elements that will affect your travels; and when it comes to booking a cruise, our prices often beat booking direct and we have ship credits to add in along with other special ‘not to miss’ promotions that you will not find elsewhere. Because we have so many satisfied and loyal customers, we want to show our gratitude. We started holding a customer appreciation drawing each year. Last year we gave away cruises, exclusive resort stays and more. This year we will be providing tickets for a drawing to our customers (one ticket for every $1,000 spent for 2014.)

There are other ways to score tickets such as customer referrals. The tickets will be entered in a drawing in 2015 and we will offer over 20 prizes including five high-end prizes such as a cruise and a tour. Book multiple trips through us and watch your chances to win increase. You can meet our many satisfied customers at our Customer Appreciation “Drawing” party. A superior travel agency is able to fit the needs of any traveler, no matter location, destination or special travel arrangements required. We are a small, trusted familyowned and operated local business, supporting the community. You can count on us.

“Whether you are ready for a trip around the world with Abercrombie & Kent in a private jet, or a relaxing cruise to enjoy the weather in the Caribbean or the wilderness in Alaska, we are ready to make your next trip the best yet. We want to be your family or corporation travel consultants for life, and ensure you and your family and friends consistently meet your traveling goals. We are at your service to make your dreams happen to the caliber you expect.” Ed Stahl, Owner, Travel Advisors of Los Gatos

Let’s Dance! Join Arthur Murray

If you’ve never tried dancing, you’re missing out. Ballroom Dance is the hottest craze, and although Dancing With The Stars showcases the Hollywood Glitz side, social dancing is where it’s at. With hot dances like Salsa and Swing, popular spots in the Bay Area are now starting to carry their own weight in the dancing scene. Classic dances are making their way back and dancing with a partner is more popular than ever. We sat down with Juan de Dios and Cari Jo Garcia, the owners of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Los Gatos, to get the low down on all things Ballroom Dance. Tell me a little about Arthur Murray. What’s the mission statement or goal of the organization? Arthur Murray’s mission statement is Change Your Life One Dance At A Time. It’s so true. We’ve seen hundreds if not thousands of people walk through those doors and helped them make positive changes in their life. Even though we teach dance, we train our instructors to know that it’s so much more than just a step we’re teaching people. What are some of the benefits that ballroom dancing can have on someone? Wow, that’s a loaded question. There are so many. I guess it depends on the individual. However, most come in for the stress relief. Being in Silicon Valley, life gets so hectic sometimes that we all need a break. I believe the studio provides

that oasis for them. Couples like the lesson as their date night, and simply as break from their routine. They feel it reenergizes their relationship. Dancing so close together, how could you not? But a lot of people like the health benefits. It’s just so invigorating, you get lost in the music and the physical art of it. How can you not leave happy when you’re moving your body to music? How long have you been with Arthur Murray? Well, we’ve been with Arthur Murray for over 15 years now. Teaching, traveling and consulting for the company, we’ve had a blast helping people everyday. Getting to see what dancing can do for them has made it all worthwhile. It’s amazing! Ballroom dancing, as it has been said, can change lives. You believe that. How have you seen it change one of your students’ lives? We have a lady who attends our Los Gatos studio that came in because she was very tired at work. She knew she needed to exercise, but didn’t want to work out late at night at the gym by herself. She would drive by the studio for weeks on her way home and saw everyone having fun. At first she was so nervous, but we made her feel at home the moment she came in. After the first lesson, she caught the bug and has been with the studio for over 10 years. She loves the socializing most, but has developed into a wonderful dancer. In fact she just came back from her first Dance Competition and absolutely loved it.

11

Why Los Gatos? We’ve had our studio in San Jose for several years and wanted to expand. Los Gatos seemed to be the best spot to begin with their love of health, fitness, dance and community. All great matches for what we wanted to accomplish. We’ve been here for 2 years and have participated in community events like Jazz on the Plazz and Music in the Park. It’s great to see how alive and full of life everyone is here. We’ve already seen how dancing can help with the clients that we have in our studio so far, that we can’t wait to show the whole town as well as surrounding areas just what dancing can do for them.

Do I need a partner? No. In fact although both singles and couples are welcome, most come in on their own. Anyone will be able to benefit from taking lessons and we prepare for whoever decides to come whether on their own or with a partner.

Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Los Gatos

|

What type of lessons do you offer? We offer 3 kinds of sessions. The one-on-one lesson is designed to help you learn specifically what you need with your own dancing. Group classes teach you a variety of patterns, balance, and general knowledge as well as how to lead and follow different partners. Lastly, practice sessions help you take everything you learn and apply it in a real life situation (with the help of instructors in case you need it).

Call today to schedule your first complimentary dance lesson, or visit us during an open house. We look forward to meeting you!

How can someone get started? To start, all you need is the desire to want to dance. Most people think it’s natural and although some can do it more naturally than others, Ballroom Dancing is a trained skill. Anyone can learn how. In fact you begin with a complimentary private lesson just to get you started. After that we have different packages to choose from depending on what you’d like, sort of like a country club. All you have to do is just call the studio and any one of our team members can help you get started over the phone. It’s that easy. LG TM

How is ballroom dancing different from other types of exercise? I think any form of exercise is great because anytime you’re up and moving, that’s a bonus to becoming a better you, but I believe ballroom is the most social. You always meet people and you’re constantly having a conversation with them through the art of dance. In addition to that, it exercises the mind and body all in at once. The combination of pattern memorization and body movement, make for a perfect workout.

e’ve all been touched by a ballet dancer’s graceful expression, strength and flexibility during a ballet performance. Whether a distant memory of your own dancing experience; a family tradition to view the Nutcracker during the holiday season; a special night at the Theatre; or even the tiny dancer that used to commonly twirl to music when we opened our jewelry boxes as young kids. This amazingly artistic dance demonstration began in Italy during the Renaissance as far back as the 1400s as royal court entertainment, and spread through Europe during the next century, and later nations in centuries to follow. It is pleasant to see a local foundation keeping the ballet dream alive, with a little help from friends. Marcie Ryken founded Los Gatos Ballet School in 2002 and Los Gatos Ballet Foundation, a non-profit organization, in 2005. The dancers of this premier school are afforded the opportunity to serve the community through performances, artist enrichment programs, mentorship programs and outreach programs in schools which are funded by the Foundation. The Los Gatos Ballet Foundation manages an ongoing efforts to support these enriching programs.

Recently, for example, the Los Gatos Ballet Foundation held an outstandingly successful fundraiser at Black Ridge Vineyards March 30th. First, Mother Nature provided perfect weather. With rainfall descending the days before and after “Wine, Cheese & Chocolate,” the event was blessed with a sky full of sunshine and few clouds. Parents really enjoyed that the Sunday afternoon event was “kid friendly” with a bouncy house and art activities, as it freed them up to enjoy the wine pairing and other activities indoors. Thanks to the great attendance, between the admission ticket sales, silent auction, raffle ticket sales, sponsors, and other donations, the total raised was close to $25,000. One silent auction item was a stay at Villa Marcella, a 10,000 square foot beachfront mansion in Cabo San Lucas. The high bid was $6,000, and the winning family’s kids jumped up and down with joy when their name was called. The release of the custom labeled Black Ridge blend appropriately named Pirouette was a big hit. Only 69 cases remain from the limited 90 case production. An additional $24,000 in funds can now be raised for the Los Gatos Ballet Foundation. To help this worthy cause and toast your good deeds with a

During her seven years with Houston Ballet, she performed leading roles in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Swan Lake, Peer Gynt and Les Patineurs. She also had the privilege of working with Margot Fonteyn, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, John Butler and Glen Tetley to name a few. During a pause in performing, she taught at Fresno State University and was Ballet Mistress to California Central Ballet. After moving to the Bay area, Ms. Ryken worked as a guest artist, performing leading roles in Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Swan Lake, Nutcracker and Ben Stevenson’s Three Preludes. During her professional career, Marcie discovered and integrated Pilates training into her routine, which benefited her performance and increased the longevity of her career. Marcie received her Pilates certification training from Jennifer Stacey, owner of Peak Performance in San Francisco. TM

just kicked off a Capital Campaign to raise an additional $50,000 that is needed to produce the school’s brand new production of the Nutcracker, which will be performed at the Flint Center in Cupertino in December 2014. The San Jose Youth Symphony will partner with Los Gatos Ballet in this production, providing a unique opportunity to bring together talented young artists in dance and music.

About the Founder:

Marcie Ryken, a California native, has over 25 years of professional dance experience. At age 16, she began her professional career with San Francisco Ballet. While there, she competed and won 4th place in the 1982 International Ballet Competition at Jackson, Mississippi. In preparation for this, she was coached by Yvonne Mounsey, Eric Bruhn and Jacques D’Amboise. As a result of her performance in Jacksonville, she was invited by Richard Englund to join American Ballet Theatre II, where Marcie stayed for 2 years. After seeing her in a performance in Texas, Ben Stevenson invited her to become a company member.

Continuing her passion for movement and efforts towards improving body mechanics, Marcie founded Los Gatos Pilates in downtown Los Gatos in 2001. A year later, she had an opportunity to move to a larger facility in order to incorporate her love for dance, founding Los Gatos Ballet. She later received her Franklin Method certification, which is an essential component for movement educators, especially in the field of dance. LG TM

C

ommunity Against Substance Abuse (CASA) is proud to announce its 30-year anniversary in 2014. This non-profit foundation was formed in 1984 by two Los Gatos mothers, Jan Anderson and Joanne Rodgers in response to a growing concern over the use of alcohol and drugs by teenagers and the associated harm. CASA has grown into a respected and effective volunteer organization that draws extensive resources from the community including parents, students, merchants, town government officials, school administrators, police, and health care professionals. CASA’s mission is to foster healthy lifestyle choices that help young people resist alcohol and drugs. CASA achieves this goal through education programs for parents and alternative, sober activities for students. CASA provides opportunities for parents that are designed to offer support and promote networking. Monthly general meetings are a forum for the exchange of information regarding drugs and alcohol that affects our local youth. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend to hear guest adult and student speakers, reports by school administrators and local law enforcement, and real world experiences by other parents. Parent education programs offered throughout the year by CASA and in conjunction with community partner Parenting Continuum include nationally recognized speakers on relevant topics. In addition, CASA offers STEP classes (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) to assist in the development of parenting skills. Hundreds of parents have “graduated,” and as one parent said, “I’m not in the dark anymore about how to respond to my teen. STEP was invaluable in providing tools for understanding and responding to my teen’s behavior.” For youth, CASA provides many positive alternative, sober activities. Key programs designed to promote leadership, self-esteem and fun that can be had without the use of substances, run throughout the school year. CASA’s Under 21 Club provides students an avenue to have a good time without the negative influences the average student can encounter on a Friday night. The Under 21 Club welcomes all Los Gatos students ages 15-20 to the open mic nights held once a month at the Los Gatos Roasting Company and features many talented student acts along with a DJ. Students who attend socialize with others while listening to talented performers and simply enjoy the atmosphere. For information about the next Under 21 Club, visit their Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/Under21Club

SAFERIDES

One of CASA’s most important programs is SafeRides - a service that provides Los Gatos High School students who find themselves in an unsafe situation, including youth who are under the influence or are with someone who is under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, with a free, confidential, non-judgmental safe ride home. SafeRides (SR), provides this service every Friday night from 10:00pm to 1:00am, except during school breaks. Additionally they run on 2 Saturdays corresponding with the coronation and Prom dances. The SAFERIDES number 888.550.RIDE (7433), is printed on all LGHS student I.D.’s as well as lanyards purchased by CASA and distributed to students through peer-to-peer groups. Whenever students feel they are in an unsafe situation, they are encouraged to call SR for a ride home anywhere within Los Gatos/MS including some areas of the mountains. The program is designed to keep teens safe and this past year SR provided over 300 rides with an average of 2-3 teens per ride. The program began after the tragic loss of a LGHS senior due to drunk driving, to prevent such a loss again. (CASA continued on page 20) LG TM

T

he Los Gatos Morning Rotary proudly presents the annual Los Gatos Plein Air Fine Art Exhibit and Sale. The program began in 2004 and there was a slight gap in planning, so this is actually only the 6th year. The excitement will be in the air as there will be 34 artists roaming around the town and hillsides with their easels, beginning Tuesday, June 17th. The artists are given a 20 mile radius which encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountains, Almaden Hillsides, Vasona, Lexington and other scenic sites from which to choose a location that they would like to begin painting. You may be wondering how they found and selected these artists. The plein air artists are ‘juried’ beginning in January, and they are part of a nationwide plein air circuit. The nationally acclaimed artists are from: California, Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Minnesota, Maryland, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. The Los Gatos local artists participating are Ed Lucey and David Stonesifer. The artists look forward to joining this Los Gatos event for several reasons. First they are entered to win awards. They also sell many paintings and some are known to sell out. Lastly, they compete for $3,500 in cash prizes. The awards are determined by this year’s notable Plein Air Juror Paul Kratter. “Plein Air is a catalyst to reviving our town as an artists community. Donating the funds from the sale of these magnificent works of art to support art and science education for youth is beneficial to everyone,” shares Ginger Taylor McDonald, the Plein Air Co-chair, past president of LGMR (2006-07), and long time resident of Los Gatos. A team of approximately 20 Rotarians were involved with the planning

of the Plein Air Exhibit, and on the final day there is an ‘all hands’ understanding, so 75 Los Gatos Morning Rotary members along with their spouses and friends and even members of other Rotary Clubs, will come together to host the event, to ensure your visit will be a great one. The Los Gatos Morning Rotary would like to thank Los Gatos Meadows for their $10,000 sponsorship this year, as well as all the other businesses and volunteers that have come together to make this year’s event perfect.

What to Expect at the Sale and Wine Tasting

Enjoy music and browse through the hundred plus paintings on display by the 34 invited artists. East artist will submt from 4 to 8 beautiful paintings for sale that they worked on since arriving the previous Tuesday (the 17th). The event will feature wines from many great wineries for tastings on Saturday, June 21st. Tasting is from Noon - 4:00 p.m. The participating wineries are: Muns Vineyard, Left Bend Vineyards, Downhill Cellars, and Black Ridge. Draw2Art is conducting children’s art classes, that being the theme that ties together the Rotary’s beneficiaries “Art Education for Children”. Draw2Art owner Rachael Cartwright will be offering 8 mini-art sessions to kids 4 years old and up, plus goodie bags and door prizes. There will be dozens of entertaining Rotary hosts available to ensure you have a great time while supporting art and science.

CASA has a long tradition of bringing Red Ribbon Week (RRW) to Los Gatos schools. The Red Ribbon Campaign by National Family Partnership is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of young people during RRW held October 23-31 each year. The red ribbons which CASA volunteers tie throughout town are a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs and present a unified and visible commitment to keep children, families and communities safe, healthy and drug-free. CASA school reps plan activities at each school to provide experiential learning lessons to teach students about healthy lifestyle choices and the dangers of underage use of drugs and alcohol. CASA’s program is positive and fun and designed to get people talking with other people and working on activities that will help rebuild a sense of community and common purpose.

Movies Through the Ages Fashion Show

The CASA “Look of Los Gatos” Fashion show, the organization’s biggest fundraiser, was held on Sunday, April 27 at the newly remodeled Los Gatos Theater, with two shows. Each year CASA holds a fashion show involving over 150 LGHS students and many local merchants to raise awareness for CASA’s mission of fostering healthy lifestyle choices for young people to resist drugs and alcohol and to provide a positive, healthy alternative activity for students. The students model over 100 outfits from Los Gatos boutiques, as well as original creations from LGHS student designers. Student models are coached by experienced professionals, make-up artists, and choreographers resulting in a production of the highest caliber. Students also get involved as stage crew working behind the scenes on sound, lighting, stage decor and production. The show provides an entertainng and fun experience. The effectiveness of CASA in the Los Gatos community has been noted and the organization has served as a model for development of other CASA organizations in Saratoga, Danville, and Carmel. For more information about CASA, to sign up for the quarterly E-newsletter, or to donate or volunteer please visit www.casalg.org.
