Peace of mind doesn’t come easy when a loved one is experiencing a medical emergency, and it gets even more complicated when no one is there with them. Whether distance, other dependents, work, or even an illness themselves, family members may be detained from getting to the bedside or staying there, when it is so critical to have an advocate. If you are seriously worried about someone’s well-being during hospital visits, learn about the EASE PLAN. Read the details.

ime to close out your 2013 taxes, determine which of your New Year’s resolutions are actually working, and as always attempt to improve your lifestyle, both business and personal. There have been a lot of convenient businesses in the area closing, so I just want to remind the neighborhood to support local businesses to keep them thriving as you don’t always realize how spoiled you are to have so many services minutes away, until they are not there anymore. The businesses represented in this magazine spend a lot of time and thought on their marketing and I feel they deserve recognition and respect. It is a lot of work to own your own business and a huge responsibility, so hats off as our advertisers are doing well. They also support the community monetarily as well as other ways. This issue, in fact we recognize some business owners that have taken the time to work with the high school creating internships. You can’t put a price on mentorship.

2014 is the Year of

The Travel Agent Pictured left to right: Mollie Tobias and Patti Rottjakob

Experienced and passionate travel agents are hard to find, but not at Travel Advisors, because that is a requirement for our team. Over the last decade, many travel agents moved out of the industry due to online technology. This has made agents with longevity and the ability to effectively consult and provide superior service while making valuable travel recommendations. Our agency is one not limited by destination location or type of travel, as collectively there is no stone unturned in our office. We have become true consultants representing our clients’ travel preferences. A superior travel agency is able to fit the needs of any traveler, no matter location, destination or difficulties required for such. The more global our world gets, the more intricate the travel planning experience, and we are ready to assist. Resorts and destination hotels are being bought and sold constantly, the ratings change quickly, just to name a few trends, and then there is the whole political news affecting our industry, and should we mention weather? Let us introduce you to a handful of our agents who humbly pride themselves in their expertise in our industry, and you will get an idea of what sets us apart.

Marilyn Cox Gum, Office Manager Marilyn’s first career was as a microbiologist but then the travel bug bit and she joined Travel Advisors in 1982. She experienced many of the world’s fascinating locales from Mt. Everest to Arusha, Tanzania. She invites you to plan the trip of your dreams.

“Whether you are ready for a trip around the world with

Abercrombie & Kent in a private jet, or a relaxing cruise to enjoy the weather in the Caribbean or the wilderness in Alaska, we are ready to make your next trip the best yet. We want to be your travel consultants for life, and ensure you and your family and friends consistantly meet your traveling goals. We are at your service to make your dreams happen to the caliber you expect.”

Los Gatos High School students interested in Fashion are getting more experience than one would expect as their teacher is taking them out of the classroom and into the real world!

Intro to

Fashion Styling & Merchandising F

ashion Styling and Merchandising is a new course at Los Gatos High School. Students who enroll in the course are interested in learning about careers in the fashion industries. Not just fashion design, but the whole creative gamet associated with the industry. One student, for instance, crossed over to interior design. Los Gatos High School teacher Patricia Sutton, has taught a fashion construction class for many years. She said it is rare to get a student to stay in her class all four years, but she definitely has lots of repeat students and when that happens, the students get to put a unique flare to their sewing and alter patterns to achieve new looks. As with most industries, Patricia noticed a need for her students to get ‘in the door’ and understand business a bit more to acquire some buisness acumen to couple with their creative talents, if they truly want to succeed in this field. Because of this, she added this new course which focuses on the styling and merchandising for a change. A unique component for this class, is that she has added an internship program. The school has partnered with businesses downtown to give the students an opportunity to gain real world experience in the fashion industry.

Students go to their job sites every other Wednesday and do a variety of tasks such as creating window displays, unpacking merchandise, steaming apparel, performing inventory for retailers, and assisting with some marketing efforts such as organizing and working on the stores’ social media sites. The participating retail vendors are Kismet Boutique, Shoe Candy, Haute Bride, Title Nine, Discovery Shop of LG, She She Shoes, Wink and Willow, Athletic Performance, Palapa Lounge Beachwear, Toss Designs, Romantiques, Kitsch Couture, LG Baby, Jennifer Croll and Voluptuary. The store owners of course, provide hands-on training and the school goal is for their students to gain enough experience to become valuable assets within the industry. “A few students were hired during the holiday break and/or will be hired for summer jobs! This is a great benefit for teens who have a hard time getting jobs with this economy,” shares the Intro to Fashion Styling and Merchandising teacher Patricia Sutton. Retail is a challenging business and the store owners have to stay sharp and focused to continually meet the demands of the changing seasons, as well as trending fashions and blending merchandise to also meet the requirements

this more a love of mentoring project?

welcomed and valued. Thank you for orchestrating this class and experience.” Taryne Kraus TM

About the Teacher, Patricia Sutton “I grew up in the business of fashion. My mother was a tailor and had a line of clothing that sold to exclusive boutiques. I learned to sew at the age of 4 and used to make all my clothing. My Home Economics teacher in high school inspired me to become a teacher. In high school and college, I modeled for Sears, worked at Macy’s and was a window display artist for an Antique and gift shop.

From the Students: “This class is a wonderful opportunity and I have really enjoyed getting to know the great girls in it as well as developing a deeper understanding of the fashion industry and all of its components.” Caytie Judy, Freshman “The internship in our class gives us real world experience, not only with business but with real life problems; that’s hard to find in a normal high school class.” Kat Hunsinger, Senior From a Parent (to Ms. Sutton): “My daughter Anne is really enjoying your Fashion Merchandising class. Without realizing it, you are teaching her invaluable skills about working, presenting yourself well, punctuality, etc. while she implements her classroom-acquired skills about color, design, advertising, etc. I am very pleased with your program and curriculum. What impresses me the most, however, is that this is the first year you have taught this class. At Back to School Night, I sensed a real clear vision of what your students would learn and where you wanted to take them. Anne has really enjoyed her internship and they have made her feel very

I graduated with a Home Economics and Spanish degree because of my love for Fashion, Culinary Arts and the Spanish culture. I have been teaching for 27 years, the last 18 years in the Los Gatos area. (For 5 years I taught at Saratoga, and I am on my 14th year at Los Gatos. Although I taught fashion courses prior to that while in the Southern California and Sacramento areas.) I feel that you need the sewing skill to appreciate how to put the garments together, but also to understand business. After teaching the construction course for years, students expressed an interest in the business end of fashion, so I created a course to meet my students’ needs and interest.” Patricia Sutton has had the pleasure of seeing her students excel in the fashion industry. She has students at FIT (Fashion Institute and Technology) in NY, Jennifer Wang at Parsons (where Project Runway films), SCAD Savanah LG Collge of Art and Design and more. Her dream is to one day open Vogue Magazine and see a former student starting back at her! LG TM

of the target market. This could be tricky in Los Gatos, as some of the regulars are Los Gatos residents, but with Los Gatos also being a ‘destination location’ for vacationers, business visitors, ocassional conventions, and pulling from even other Bay Area neighborhoods, the demographics are not as cut and dried as one might think. Are the students making a difference to the store owners or is

SEED. is a women’s clothing company that offers Chic, Contemporary and Versatile clothing.

What is unique about SEED.?

I am proud to say SEED. is made in the USA, resulting in superb quality. My tops are called DUOs. The patent pending design can be worn in both the forward and backward directions, creating two tops in one. I experimented with numerous fabrics to develop what I believe to be the perfect fabrics for tops and skirts. The poly spandex fabric stretches beautifully to accentuate any woman’s figure. It does not wrinkle, dries quickly, is perfect for travel and every day. The tops are extremely versatile and easily covert from work to play. I offer sizes XS - XL.

What is your vision?

My tops and skirts are my go to pieces in my wardrobe. I wear them daily. I want to plant a SEED. in every woman’s wardrobe. I will introduce new pieces over time as well as introduce current styles in different fabrics. I’m excited for the future of the company!

Umunhum Conservancy by Sam Drake, President

E

very day, we residents of the South Bay see a striking landmark in the mountains above us – a white rectangular tower atop Mount Umunhum, and we know we are home when we see it. More than a landmark, the Tower is the most visible, and last remnant of an important chapter of our local history. Unfortunately that landmark and the history it represents is endangered. A group of local volunteers hope to save it. At 3,486 feet elevation, Mt. Umunhum is the fourth tallest peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. But from much of the South Bay it appears much more prominent than that statistic would suggest. The eye is drawn to an enigmatic white “cube” at its peak. During the Cold War, Mt. Umunhum was the site of the Almaden Air Force Station. The Station defended the Bay Area from invasion by air during the Cold War; from 1958 to 1980 its powerful radar could see far out to sea, and its airmen could scramble fighters to investigate any unidentified planes that were detected. On watch 24 hours a day, the Station’s blanket of protection kept the Bay Area from harm. Without that air defense, Bay Area history would have been very different; many of the high-tech businesses that formed the foundation of Silicon Valley would not have set up shop here. Indeed, many of those companies worked for the Air Force, building parts used in the radar and computer technology atop Mt. Umunhum. Built in 1960, the tower was the base for the station’s long range search radar antenna. The five story tall concrete building housed the personnel and electronics to operate the radar; the 85.5 ton antenna on top spun every 10-12 seconds, searching the skies for incoming airborne threats. From the valley floor, only the Radar Tower is visible. But in reality the mountaintop contained an entire small town. The airmen and their families lived on Mt. Umunhum – children, too. The Air Force Station had barracks,

apartments, a PX, even a bowling alley – all the comforts of home. For the military families stationed there, it WAS home. As technology advanced, and satellites and missiles became more sophisticated, ground-based radars became less important. Eventually Mt. Umunhum was no longer needed for our nation’s safety. The Air Force Station closed in 1980; the radar antenna was taken down, leaving the Tower and the rest of the Station behind. Today Mt. Umunhum is owned by the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District, or “Mid-Pen”. They are in the process of converting the Air Force Station into Open Space, and have plans in place to open Mt. Umunhum to the public for the first time. However, the Radar Tower is not part of their plans. As a matter of policy, Mid-Pen does not spend money on historic preservation, just on Open Space. Their preference, then, is to tear the Radar Tower down. At a series of rancorous public meetings in 2012, the South Bay community informed Mid-Pen’s Board that this was not acceptable. However, through a quirk of local politics, the people who see the Tower every day – mostly in San Jose – are not part of the Mid-Pen district; they pay no taxes to the District and have no representation in its decision making process. In October 2012, Mid-Pen’s announced their decision: If by 2017 “the community” can raise the $1.2 million needed to repair and restore the Radar Tower, it will be saved. If not, it will be demolished. A number of vocal activists were present that night. “Several of us who wanted to save the tower exchanged ideas and phone numbers in the audience that night,” said Sam Drake. “A few days later I filed paperwork with the State to form the Umunhum Conservancy, a non-profit dedicated

to preserving the Radar Tower.” Other volunteers quickly signed on to help; today the Conservancy’s Board includes Basim Jaber, historian for the Almaden Air Force Station; Kitty Monahan, former Santa Clara County Park Commissioner; Mike Boulland, organizer of several local non-profit volunteer organizations; Chuck Berls, Founding Director of the Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation and Randee McQueen, whose family owns much of the property surrounding Mt. Umunhum. The goal of the Conservancy is to raise the funds necessary to preserve the Radar Tower. “In our first year we focused on getting the paperwork done so we could accept donations, and on getting the word out to the community. The reaction we’ve been getting from the community is great! At our first public event at the Almaden Art & Wine Festival, people were lined up to talk to us about Mt. Umunhum and how they can help with our efforts,” said Basim Jaber, Umunhum Conservancy Board Director who has researched and provides presentations on the station history. After one year the Conservancy is about 15% of the way towards the goal. “We need to raise another $1 million by 2017. To save our local landmark and history we need help from everyone in our community” said Kitty Monahan, the Conservancy’s Secretary. “Today all of the structures of the Almaden Air Force Station are gone, other than the Radar Tower”, said Drake. “Together we can preserve our local historical landmark for future generations.”
