LG Magazine Travel Review

I

caught the travel bug. I was amazed by the vacation to Italy that Travel Advisors of Los Gatos planned for their customer (detailed on p. 6), and am eager to try that one myself, but I can’t complain because I recently returned from a voyage. I pledged to travel once a month or at least every other month. I had the pleasure last month to visit a remote Caribbean island named Carriacou which is in the Grenadines, near Barbados. I was invited by the owners of a luxurious villa named La Pagerie via LinkedIn. I am not exactly the National Geographic and in fact had to research the location of this tiny, remote island, but I am usually up for an adventure and enjoy traveling, so I accepted the assignment. (I had a similar assignment in Zihuatanejo years ago and

loved it.) I was delighted with the people, the sites, the food, the villa, its caretakers, and the experience which was both amazing and educational. You may be thinking that is a strange way to describe a trip, but I learned many new things in Carriacou, such as driving on the left side of the road and scuba diving. The latter I was even lucky enough to run across some biologists who created a charity with the intent to raise awareness and minimize the detrimental damage humans are creating among their reefs. I also cover that story this issue with some words from their local scientists. I must have taken hundreds of photos so it was difficult to narrow down which to use in my story, but I hope you enjoy viewing the photos included, and reading about my stay at La Pagerie Villa. Who knows, maybe you will decide to visit this island. I have told many of my venture and thus far have only met one American that has actually been there. LG TM

Vacation in Italy I

by Kevin McIntire

must admit that prior to leaving for Italy, I had heard from just about every person on the planet, just how wonderful Italy was. “The people, the food, THE CULTURE!!!” was a common phrase that stuck in my mind. Oftentimes in life, when people tell you how great something is, and how wonderful their experiences were, that thing often comes up short. Italy however, is not one of those things. I can honestly say from the deepest parts of me, that Italy did not disappoint. What a trip! We had been planning on going to Italy for our 10 year anniversary for years, but with 3 little kids (one who was constantly in and out of the hospital), we were constantly worried about the costs and timing. We knew that we wanted to do the trip right, but had no idea where to start. Sure, we knew the thousands of different places we wanted to go, but no real plan of how to attack it. Enter Linda Griffin from Travel Advisors of Los Gatos. She came highly recommended and she certainly did not disappoint. A few meetings, some touch ups here or there, and we had planned our dream trip to Italy in just a few weeks. Oh…and we were way under budget. Yes…under. We learned very quickly in Italy that just strolling the streets at any time of day was the key to taking full

advantage of what Italy has to offer. Any chance we had, we would pick a street and start walking. It seems like every stone, rock, or outcropping has a story it wants to tell you if only you will slow down and listen. A left turn here, a right turn there, and you will happen upon the most intimate dining opportunities that made me feel as if my wife and I were the only people on the planet. We watched sunsets from the steps of thousand year old churches, that overlooked the city of Florence, and sat on the rocky beaches of Cinque Terra and listened as the waves played their soft evening lullaby. One moment you are awe inspired by the Colosseum and within minutes you can be nestled into some cream y gelato, kissing your spouse in front of the Trevi Fountain. To me, Florence was the most beautiful city I have ever seen, and a place my heart could settle. My wife loved Venice, and I will admit the romance there is not something to be missed. Being young parents of three little ones, the peace and quiet of this 15 day journey was so revitalizing for our energy level; while the adventure of a hike in Cinque Terre, a breathtaking horseback ride through the hills of Tuscany or getting ‘lost’ in Venice revitalized us. From start to finish, Linda Griffin made our trip so easy, so comfortable, and so fun; that we were able to focus on having a great time, and not worrying about the details.

he Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club, in partnership with C.B. Hannegan’s Irish Pub, is presenting a community fundraising event, with proceeds going to the Los Gatos Morning Rotary Charitable Foundation (supporting music, art and youth scholarships).

This is truly a ‘block party’ and Bachman Avenue is shut down during the event. Bachman Avenue is where you will find the checkin point for ticketed attendees, as well as will call tickets (some tickets may be available the day of the event, but this is not guaranteed.)

Will there be enough food you ask? Our Motto: “3,000 lobsters, and 1,200 people, you do the Math.” And after some simple arithmetic you can see you will not go home hungry. And if you expect to be hungry again the next day, or have friends or family that cannot attend, you can purchase Lobster to go – alive, or cooked. This is your chance to “Eat, Party, & Dance” with friends, family & neighbors at C.B. Hannegan’s in Los Gatos. In detail you will enjoy a fabulous Lobster dinner which includes Tri-tip, and famous side dishes. Live music will be on stage with ‘The Hitmen.’

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit our website: www.lglobsterparty.com or type in ‘Los Gatos Morning Rotary Claws for a Cause Lobster Party’ while in Facebook. We turn the block into a wonderland of fun. This is what Los Gatos Morning Rotary calls an “All Hands Event” meaning that all 75 of the Rotarians participate during the all weekend long set-up and eventual tear down on Sunday morning. There will be tables on Almendra, and in the Bank of America parking lot, some of which can be pre-purchased and reserved for 10 attendees each. The Sea Scout volunteers help with busing the tables, and are also beneficiaries of the funds that are raised. Proceeds directly benefit the Los Gatos High School Music Boosters, Los Gatos Boy Scout Troop #2, the Sea Scouts, and provide funding for graduating Seniors as Westmont, Leigh and Los Gatos High School. Making LG Great!

Los Gatos Community Foundation Los Gatos Community Foundation, Inc. History

T

he idea for a Community Foundation originated in 1990 with three women: Emma Vargo, Susan Huntley, and Ardith Smith who were on the Los Gatos Parks Commission. The purpose was to form a non-profit organization capable of receiving tax-deductible donations for town improvements. The impetus was the desire to build a bandstand. As the plans were being made, the historical Lyndon Carriage House Cupola was discovered in a storage yard at the San Jose Historical Museum. With the agreement of the City of San Jose and the Town of Los Gatos, the completion of the bandstand was the placing of the cupola on the top of what is now known as the Lyndon Bandstand. The Los Gatos Community Foundation, Inc was incorporated in July, 1993, and granted non-profit status in May of 1994. In October of 1993, the Foundation began holding its annual fund raising garden parties at various local estates. The tradition continued until 2003, when the Lyndon Bandstand was completed and dedicated to the Town of Los Gatos.

What is the Los Gatos Community Foundation? The vision of the Los Gatos Community Foundation, Inc. is to support, strengthen and enrich the quality of life in the Los Gatos Area Community. The Foundation has succeeded in annually giving scholarships to seniors of the local high schools and grants to worthy non-profit organizations with specific needs. Creating capital projects such as the Lyndon Bandstand in Oak Meadow Park and going Green with LED Lights on the Christmas tree in the Town Plaza and, most recently, the downtown tree lights are all activities that support our mission for the enhancement of our community.

Tree Lighting Ceremony

Approximately 15 years ago, the Foundation, teamed up with the Town of Los Gatos to host the annual Christmas Tree Lighting spectacular, held the Friday before the annual Children’s Holiday Parade. Everyone’s focus is on the majestic fir towering over the Town Plaza at the crucial moment when the mayor flicks the switch to turn on the lights. The tree was planted by the History Club of Los Gatos in 1923, and in 1997 the Foundation teamed up with the History Club in a major effort to raise funds to re-light the tree. Keeping abreast of 21st Century trends, the focus today is to change out those lights to energy-efficient LED’s. The goal of the annual ceremony is to provide a family event for ‘kicking off’ the holiday season. The refreshment booth, manned by Foundation volunteers, is a means of raising funds, not only for the Foundation, but for possible future enhancement of the event (i.e., lights for the tree or plaza).

Beautification Committee

The Beautification Committee was established in 1999. The committee’s goal is to assist in the beautification of Los Gatos by identifying

needs and working with the Town and townspeople to fulfill these needs. The Committee actively promotes community clean-up and beautification projects. We acknowledge those who have made a positive contribution and commitment to the goals of Los Gatos beautification. We strive to raise awareness of the importance of living in harmony with nature.

Adopt-a-Planter

The Foundation’s Beautification Committee applauds the 30 community-minded residents who have adopted planters along Santa Cruz Avenue through our Adopt-A-Planter-Program. There are 30 planters that are adopted by local community minded residents. Individuals or businesses may become an adoptee for an available planter in the downtown area. We are looking for committed sponsors who will enjoy adding to the ambience of our downtown and who will keep their planters in tip-top shape.

Another community event under the direction of the Los Gatos Community Foundation, Inc. Beautification Committee is the Annual Fall Bloom-a-thon. The committee will be working with volunteers from our community to plant about 2,000 daffodil bulbs throughout our town. The flowers will begin to appear in early spring and surprise and delight residents, shoppers and passersby with their splashes of color. In past years, we have had a lot of fun as youth organizations and community members of all ages have joined in the planting.

The Foundation offers grants each year to strengthen and enrich the quality of life within the Los Gatos Community. Priority for grants is based on a need for non-profit groups to improve facilities, services or programs that foster community development. To this end, the Foundation considers grants in seven broad categories: Civic/Community Investment, Cultural Enrichment, Education, Environment, Health, Historical Heritage, Recreation.

Scholarships from Los Gatos Community Foundation, Inc.

The Los Gatos Community Foundation, Inc. offers scholarships to student citizens of Los Gatos. We are proud to encourage and sponsor these outstanding students who have shown exceptional community service by awarding each of them a scholarship toward furthering their education. To experience the Caribbean like never before, visit this remote and private island villa La Pagerie Villa in Carriacou. This is a sailor’s and diver’s paradise.

Presenting

La Pagerie Villa Carriacou Island I

received a polite invitation from Paulus von Kunersdorf and his wife to stay at their nouveau La Pagerie Villa on Carriacou (the land of reefs) Island in the Grenadines this summer as they had recently completed a 3-year build for this French colonial style indoor-outdoor living villa. Of course I accepted, invited a couple adventurous friends and headed out. We flew to Grenada (via New York) to get to Carriacou. I had visited Grenada in the past while on a cruise, and recalled it was colorful, busy, crowded and known as the spice island. We had toured the island and driven to a crater-formed lake and I thought it was a small island, so when I researched Carriacou and discovered it was much smaller and harder to reach (as there is not direct air access and definitely no cruise ship visits) with very little development, I started thinking of the old show Gilligan’s Island, and the beauty of the island wasn’t too far off. Carriacou is governed by Grenada to the south and part of a 68-mile archipelago that houses Kick ‘em Jenny, the only active (last eruption was in 2001) submarine volcano on the Caribbean Sea floor, which makes for interesting diving. Carriacou boasts pristine, uncrowded beaches, wonderful weather and perfectly warm water, so I was eager to experience this exotic land

with the luxurious La Pagerie Villa. I was captivated by this spacious and charming villa sitting amongst a backdrop of tropical foliage and flowers including my favorite Bougainvillea and built directly on a private stretch of turquoise blue Caribbean beach. The recently built villa’s luxury craftsmanship was more than I expected in such a remote location, as the island is truly likened to being in Hawaii before the tourism bug. It is the perfect location for couples or families to ‘get away from it all’ as you almost have the island to yourself when you visit, and the locals are extremely accommodating and friendly. In fact, La Pagerie Villa also includes the service of a friendly concierge Wendy who manages customer service and she lives down the road, so she is available at a moment’s notice. She and her husband (originally from England) have lived within the same gated community for 30 plus years. She also raises the parrots you will see in the www.villalapagerie. com video. She was able to shop for us and have groceries and libations waiting in our large, full-amenity kitchen. The 5-bedroom villa is perfectly suited for 5 to 10 people, with three master suites and two large bedrooms with multiple beds. All beds were accommodated with mosquito nets, and we doubled our

15

protection by burning coals (a trick the locals informed us of). Along with the Caribbean tropical climate, Carriacou has rain season July through January which provides their only source of fresh water. The week we were there, we had a few short but powerful downpours, and one violent and moody lightening storm which blew water through the shutters into my room, adding an air of exhilarating excitement to the evening, and cooling down the weather, but the storm came and left very quickly. I would imagine this raw energy would be very romantic for couples. The other evenings the weather was perfect and we closed each evening in the edgeless pool looking at the stars and discussing the day’s activities and the characters we met. Upon island arrival, for transportation, one has several options. Wendy can take you to the police department to purchase a temporary driver’s license

having their own unique attractions, be it no buildings whatsoever or the best snorkeling, or the best bar or restaurant… Taking a boat ride to be dropped of at Sandy Island to snorkel for hours was breathtaking. Peeking at lobsters and exotic fish all afternoon with no one else on the small white sand island decorated with palm trees. I thought the afternoon couldn’t be topped in fact, until another afternoon we went scuba diving (another first for me) with Deefer Diving and combed a perfect coral reef loaded with colorful tropical fish of all sizes and shapes, spotted eels, and even gas bubbles from Kick ‘em Jenny. I felt like I was swimming inside an aquarium. The diving instructors knew just how to make an anxious beginner feel comfortable. The island food was fantastic and we quickly felt the allure to revisit several establishments, as well as crave some local fare. We made friends with

(and I would only suggest this if you are accustomed to driving in the left-hand lane and don’t mind slim and in some cases dirt roads). You can also take a public cab, boat or bus, or you can rent a car at Wayne’s Garage, and have him supply a driver. Did I mention Wayne’s also has a bar, which we found comical for a car rental company? I acquired a Carriacou driver’s license and drove the first day as I just had to try it, but quickly deferred to let someone else drive from there on and we chose Ziggy who originally delivered our rental car. We enjoyed the company of our driver (yes named after Ziggy Marley) as he added a local perspective, knew his way around (so we could just sightsee and not stress), and was able to recommend great tiny restaurants to eat at various times as some close at odd hours. A great ‘Ziggy moment’ happened at the white sand and festive Paradise Beach. Diving into the water, he pulls up large Conch shells and throws them to a child who took them to another young man who proceeded to barbeque this freshly caught lambi right on the beach, and we enjoyed tasting lambi for the first time. The Carriacou beaches (Tyrell Bay, Sandy Island, Anse la Roche, Paradise Beach, White Island, Petite Carenage, Hillsborough) were true to form. Each

the ladies at Wayne’s and stopped by almost daily. The jerk goat and jerk chicken from Laurena II was tantalizing. We also enjoyed the ambiance, French cuisine and owner at Moringa. The Slipaway was terribly cute and what you would expect to see on a tropical island, and then there was the colorful Off the Hook, and the owner Curtis was kind enough to provide us a boat taxi to snorkel at Sandy Beach. (I dare you to try his homemade rum however, with many ingredients inside, including a giant centipede.) We enjoyed every person and establishment we encountered on the island. If you plan to visit Carriacou, give the La Pagerie Villa owners a call to book their lovely villa and find out the best time to attend to suit your preferences in regards to weather and activities. For instance, in 1763 France gifted Carriacou to Great Britain, so as a result Scottish and Irish men taught the locals the art of making boats that can withstand the reefs. This boat making became a livelihood and such a big tradition that an annual race The Carriacou Sailing Regatta started in the late 60’s and has become very LG popular, and even includes a yacht race. Another attraction is the great Maroon (Music) Festival in March – April. (Continued on next page)

(La Pagerie Villa Continued...) It is a journey to reach Carriacou Island as one has to travel through a major airport such as New York, Miami or New Orleans prior to flying to Grenada. Make sure to get a flight booked that has your flight arrival to Grenada early enough to catch the Osprey (a scenic 2-hour boat ride) or flight (only 20 minutes) to Carriacou from Grenada as they are limited – even the chartered flights. We stayed in Grenada the first night in a gorgeous hotel, and had a leisurely flight out the next day, but be sure to plan your island hopping transportation at the same time as your regular flight. I have been on a couple Caribbean cruises and I love the Caribbean. As for Carriacou, it is so untainted and non-commercialized that it truly is a unique and refreshing experience and you will definitely not find a paparazzi. It is the perfect place to visit to experience privacy on a tropical island, and actually embrace the culture, experience the beautiful white sand beaches (which you may have to yourself), luxuriate in the warm aqua waters and under the sea nature. La Pagerie Villa is the one place to stay to pamper your family. * Carriacou Reef information on page 20 and Carriacou Island photos on page 22. Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause

T

he Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause (WWW) with its roots in Los Gatos, rides again into its 9th year! This wonderful group of philanthropic spirited women are now heading downtown San Jose to the Fairmont annually, thanks to our local WWW founder Cheryl Bailey who began this charity 9 years ago. 2013 event raised $240,000 for local charities and attracted 500 attendees. This year’s event on October 27th is sure to sell out as well, so purchase your tickets early by visiting www. wonderfulwitchywomen.com. Tickets go on sales September 17th.

Another Los Gatan, Carolyn Harrell, was with Cheryl when she started this just for fun in her living room 13 years ago. Now Carolyn has her husband Randy and daughter Lauren helping at the annual affair. Carolyn says, “ My family has watched us all work so hard over these many years while having a great time and now have joined me in my work as well. Randy is a big part now as he helps run the ask-a-thon and sells candy for a change to win a beautiful piece of donated jewelry from Escobar Diamonds. It is a great afternoon knowing that my family shares the same passion for helping others.”

With the growth of the event and committee members now numbering 55, the event is now under the newly founded umbrella organization named the Bella Vista League. Cheryl Bailey says that this is the most unique group of women she has had the joy to volunteer with in recent years. Many of the members are from Los Gatos, Saratoga, Campbell and Almaden now. The ages of the volunteers run from 12-66! All have a heart for helping others and a desire to make some great new friends along the way.

Please join us this year in helping others as we present: The Bella Vista League’s 9th Annual Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause Luncheon and Fundraiser Where: The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose When: October 27, 2014 Time: 10:30am - 2:00pm

There are some members who have been in the group for nine years now. Margie Montgomery, a local woman from Saratoga co-chaired the second event held at California Café. Margie says, “ Having been here from the start until now has been such a thrill! Watching our numbers grow in every way and attracting an amazing group of hard working women to put this event on is very rewarding. We have all made life-long friends in this group”.

From Editor: I have been well aware of this global issue of reef destruction. It was refreshing to meet a small group of islanders creating a new charity as well as spending their own money to make a difference. If you would like to donate or help fundraise, please contact them (or myself), as I believe this to be a necessary and noble cause.

Main Photo: Carriacou locals. (Author is in blue shirt) and another reef buddy in yellow. Below: Queen Triggerfish, Alex Ward (Reef Buddy Director) teaching a discover scuba course, then a destroyed reef (by illegal fishing practices) followed by a healthy reef.

Carriacou and a Reef in Need

A letter from: MATT RIDEOUT, BSc (Hons) Marine Biology, Exec. Director, CARIBBEAN REEF BUDDY

T

he wealth of living creatures in the Caribbean make it a tropical paradise, though few will ever know about the conservation concerns that come along with it. The Island of Carriacou lies in the Lesser Antilles, nestled within the West Indies, off the coast of Venezuela and just below Barbados. Carriacou was called ‘Kayryouacou’, meaning “the land of reefs” in Carib, because of the multitude of coral reefs and abundance of marine life which still surrounds the island today. A hotspot for diving, Carriacou boasts an overwhelming number and variety of spectacular fishes, nurse sharks, rays, lobsters and even the occasional pod of dolphins and Humpback whales. The incredible wildlife under the sea attracts visitors and fishers alike, and the island is a target area for the harvest of fish for consumption and exportation. When controlled and regulated, fishing can be sustained by the marine ecosystem. However, such regulations do not exists in Carriacou, and the effects of overfishing have resulted in the decline in health of the ecosystem. Catching too many fish leads to the overall degradation of that system. Here, certain delicacies like lobster have a specific season during which it is sustainable to take them. Outside of that season, harvesting them is illegal. Though they would benefit from a similar system, other marine species are harvested legally in unregulated numbers. Large and slow-growing fish are often targeted first, as they are more valuable, but they are often key to a functioning system, and their removal is causing serious damage. Parrot fish are a good example, as they feed on and control algae. In areas where parrotfish are taken, algae have overgrown and killed large areas of the coral underneath it. Other impacts include development of hotels, marinas; heavy metal pollutants from yachts and commercial traffic; and climate change. These effects have been studied in other areas of the Caribbean where the reefs have died. Specific negative impacts in Carriacou are unknown, as there have been no studies to find out what marine life and how much of it currently exist (biodiversity and abundance). Grenada has made efforts towards conservation of Carriacou’s coast by creating the Sandy Island Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area (SIOBMPA), which comprises an area of ~1944 acres along the coast of Carriacou. A marine protected area, or MPA is a protected area in which human activities such as fishing and development have been limited to protect the environment. Overfishing is still an issue in Carriacou, despite the MPA, as only three rangers enforce its few fishing-related regulations. So you may be asking why is this important to me? I did not think it was, until I visited the island. I experienced the breath taking

beauty of the coral reef, and saw the alarming level of damage already inflicted. I have seen the same pattern, cause and effect, in my travels, where support for the reefs came too little too late. So, sitting around one May evening, enjoying the Caribbean sunset, a small group created Caribbean Reef Buddy, an NGO dedicated to marine and coral reef conservation. We work to integrate and educate the local community, and have developed programs that identify monitoring and restoration projects. In addition, our international volunteer program will start in June 2015, where we will offer professional dive training in partnership with Deefer Diving Carriacou that will support local businesses while acting to conserve reefs. So I would argue that we have a collective responsibility to help preserve these coral reefs. Economic growth and development are important for the island; we are not eco-warriors but realists; but development must be undertaken whilst considering the impact on marine and coral reef ecosystems. Measures can be imposed to limit their impacts. Working with the local community and the SIOBMPA Committee, we are dedicated to providing much needed data and initiatives to help ensure the coral reefs around Carriacou do not die. There are many deserving causes in the World today. I sincerely hope having read this short article, you now believe us to be one of them. Caribbean Reef Buddy would very much welcome your support. Contributions can be made directly online at www.caribbeanreefbuddy. org (or for other arrangements contact Chrissy from the magazine in case our website is not completed). Who knows, one day you may decide to take a trip here, and as Chrissy Derksen, Executive Editor & Founder did, you will be warmly welcomed with a smile and a rum punch.
