Night to Remember Event

T

he Night to Remember 7th year of publishing anniversary celebration was fabulous. Thanks to all the wonderful community members that attended. The entertainment was phenomenal, the food was spectacular, and the dancing a joy. Our local politicians honored us with their presence as well. It was a great and memorable evening and we have a photo essay which captures a small amount of the evening’s excitement. Visit our Facebook page LG Magazine to see all the photos from our two great photographers and the TapSnap photo booth. We include this issue a new line from one of the chefs that was serving at the anniversary party. Chef Rodney Baca (his impressive full bio is available at the Night to Remember website) started a new line of sauces and salsas. You may recognize his name from The Grill at the Shark Tank! Read the Save the Date section to see upcoming events and fundraisers, such as Wine, Cheese and Chocolate which is produced by the Los Gatos Ballet Foundation. If you like performing arts, you can also enjoy an opera fundraiser at La Rinconada. LG Chrissy Derksen TM

Alain Pinel Realtors Celebrates 25 Years in Silicon Valley

lain Pinel Realtors is a real estate firm that stands apart from all others. It’s not just the bold black yard signs, their reputation for outstanding quality service, or their domination of Bay Area real estate. It’s the story behind the company that differentiates them - a tale of risk, incredible expansion, and a cutting-edge vision that continues to grow today. Alain Pinel Realtors is one of the original Silicon Valley startups; their business began with a single entrepreneurial spirit that has fostered their growth into the 5th largest residential real estate firm in the country. Paul L. Hulme, CEO and President of Alain Pinel Realtors (APR), began his business career at the age of nine. With his real estate investment and mortgage experience, he started the APR real estate venture in 1990 with one agent and one office in Saratoga. Shortly after the opening of their initial Saratoga office, they expanded to Los Gatos and the company continued to grow one office at a time. Within the first ten years, the founding offices in Saratoga, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park were regularly grossing over a billion dollars each. Now, celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, the company has 33 offices with nearly 1400 agents and serves the entire Bay Area and beyond. Hulme still works daily from the Saratoga office where APR began, and he and his family remain the sole owners of Alain Pinel Realtors, Inc. Although APR has expanded its global reach, Silicon Valley is still at the heart of the company. Los Gatos, their largest office with over 150 agents, offers a cutting-edge facility with a magnificent board room and lounge for agents and clients to meet. APR is a market leader in Los Gatos with their innovative approach to real estate. APR has always differentiated themselves from the rest of the industry. They were the first real estate firm to recognize and leverage the advantages delivered by cutting-edge information tools, including a computer on every desk. Hulme himself worked to develop state-of-the-art software, technology, and broad use of computer applications in real estate that immediately attracted national media attention and Steve Jobs himself helped to set up the NeXT computer work stations at each desk. Their website, apr. com, was launched in 1993, before most technology companies had websites, and in 1995, the firm went on to become the first to put property listings on their website, well before Zillow or Trulia ever existed. In 2015, they are still on the forefront of technology and plan to recreate apr.com to be a collaborative space that will rival any existing real estate platform online today.

Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Since 1990, Alain Pinel Realtors has consistently adhered to principles that have led to their success and growth; in 2015, these quality standards are still at the core of their vision. APR attracts the best, with agents who rank at the top of the industry in experience, productivity, and negotiating strength. APR provides agents and clients with advantages that many other firms do not always offer and continues to set a standard of client service that stands the test of time.

This year, Alain Pinel Realtors is celebrating their 25th anniversary and they have a big year ahead of them. “At APR, we have embraced technologically-driven productivity from the beginning and we still operate under the assumption that improvement comes from taking risks, innovating, adapting to change, and continually questioning assumptions. We are looking forward to being at the forefront of the trend setting movement in Bay Area residential real estate in 2015. Our goal is to continue to change lives through homes for another quarter century.” says Executive Vice President, Rainy Hake.

N E W Y E A R 2 0 15 |

As a locally and family owned company, community is always at the heart of their business. In 2014 they continued to focus on community relationships, charity and events, through food and backpack drives, along with charitable contributions all over the Bay Area, including Family Supportive Housing, InnVision Shelter Network, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Alameda Point Collaborative, to name a few.

|

Always leaders in real estate marketing, in 2014 APR launched a brand refreshed with bold, modern fonts and beautiful photography as well as a new ad campaign. Once again, they were named the 5th largest residential real estate firm in the nation and Paul Hulme was named one of the Most Influential People by Swanepoel Top 200.

L O S G AT O S L I F E S T Y L E M A G A Z I N E

Despite the market’s challenges and low inventory in 2014, APR’s business did not slow, but rather expanded. They achieved their most profitable year ever, closing over $10.8 billion in sales volume. Not only did they expand in Almaden, but they opened new and remodeled offices in Alameda, Larkspur, Saratoga, Sonoma, and Tahoe. As a local company with global reach, in 2015, APR plans to focus on China and also expand their international reach to focus on other emerging markets.

Don’t you be slow. Call Travel Advisors of Los Gatos today at 408-354-6531 (56 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Downtown Los Gatos, CA 95030), so book your trip to Myanmar before everyone else goes!

N E W Y E A R 2 0 15

If you want to go, note that a visa is required. There are e-visas, which are good only for admission via Yangon International Airport. Be ready to enjoy a much slower pace than you’re used to and to being out of touch. Internet throughout Myanmar is limited, and when available it is very slow.

|

Exotic Myanmar—formerly Burma—is the second largest country in Southeast Asia and, for travelers, one of the most untouched. The country relaxed its approach to tourism only in the past few years, and it’s now being “discovered.” Plan your trip today, because this “new” destination is on the top of everyone’s list and won’t remain untouched for long. Named 2014’s “Destination of the Year” by Travel + Leisure magazine, Myanmar now is the perfect place to see “the real Asia.” Preserved in part by the isolation once imposed by its military government, this country is in the beginning phases of development. Traditional clothing is still worn, including the longyi, a sort of long skirt for men. Sai kaa (Burmese pedicabs) are still the most common transportation in cities, and in the countryside horse- or oxen-drawn carts. The people are very friendly and still curious about foreigners. Although they don’t speak much English, they will welcome you and want to know what you think about their beautiful country. An organized tour is the easiest, most comfortable way to see Myanmar. The infrastructure is poor, so flying between main cities is recommended. River ferries are also a popular form of tourist transportation, and river cruises are a major attraction. The Ayeyarwady River –the famous “Road to Mandalay”— is expected to be one of the most popular river cruises in the world by the end of 2015. Many visitors fly into Yangon (the former capital [Rangoon] and Burma’s largest city). The main attraction is Schwedagon Paya, the shining Buddhist Temple adorned with literally tons of gold leaf and thousands of diamonds and gemstones. Other attractions include the National Museum, Sule Pagoda —a Buddhist Stupa which dates to the time of the Buddha, and the Bogyoke Aung San Market – a collection of more than 2,000 shops and the most Myanmar handicrafts available anywhere. At Bagan, —one of the richest archaeological sites in Southeast Asia—you can visit more than 2,200 stupas and temples as well as the Bagan Archaeological Museum. For a unique spectacle, take a hot air balloon flight over this mysterious ancient capital at sunrise or sunset. Or stay on the ground to take in the colorful scene, as Michael Hyman of Travel Advisors of Los Gatos’ did recently.

Pigeonado Pigeons In Los Gatos

I

mpressive flocks of pigeons have been arriving in Los Gatos since December. Their sheer numbers (can be hundreds), synchronized flight and fluttering sound as they move en masse through tree canopies are a captivating spectacle. “These are not your typical city pigeons. They’re the band-tailed pigeon, the closest living relative to the, now extinct, passenger pigeon and a native of California,” says Freddy Howell of the Los Gatos Birdwatcher, in Kings Court Shopping Center. “Unlike city pigeons, they all look alike.” Band-tails are a nomadic bird going where the food brings them. They feed on acorns, berries and grain. They’re typically found in dry pine forests and along the coast. Although it’s not unusual to find them in the Santa Cruz Mountains in November, their arrival in Los Gatos is unique. It may be due to the combination of a bumper crop of acorns in Los Gatos and a lack luster crop in other feeding areas. “They are adapting to the changing environment and habitat.” Says Howell. Acorns remain an important part of our local ecosystem. “Local native Indians have long made weather predictions from

reading acorn crops,” says long time Los Gatos resident, Ernie Boitano. “For example, larger acorns mean there will be heavy rains, as was proven in 1996.” The band-tailed pigeon population was vastly reduced throughout the 1800’s, when they were methodically hunted for pigeon pie, and their numbers still remain low compared to historical counts. They roost in the tree tops but feed on the ground. If you are a bird watcher and/or feeder take note, there are a lot of them and they can go through a lot of feed. There are feeders available that will restrict consumption for these larger bird species. Fortunately, aside from their food demand and being a bit messy they pose no threat, so you probably won’t need to save the date for that big movie release any time soon. by Cheryl McGinty Ryan

Can This Man Raise One Billion Dollars for Charity Online? Changing the way nonprofits raise money...

R

ichard Hill is changing the way nonprofits raise money on-line. Using his Wall Street background, he has created a unique on-line game which he says will get more people than ever to donate. “The traditional fundraising model is dependent on the established donor base. The same groups of people are asked to donate annually and for special events. Or when a crisis strikes think Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti, or the Southeast Asia tsunami - people will open their wallets. But once the crisis passes the news cycle, the wallets go back in the pockets.

Hill created the on line game Billion4Charity. He says his approach flips fundraising on its ear by integrating a global strategy focused on a broad base of people making smaller contributions. He has a diverse group of established charities behind Billion4Charity which gives people playing the game more possibilities to support a cause they care about. Charities that fund clean water projects, support education, fight human trafficking, and help refugees are just a few of the causes Billion4Charity is supporting.

In the on line game, Billion4Charity players can not only give, but also get. Participants buy a $5 ticket and say in 10 words or less why they decided to play. Their five dollar contribution goes directly to global causes and one winner of the game will be awarded one million dollars. Hill says the Billion4Charity winning Ambassador will then go on three missions around the world to see firsthand how the charities are using the donations. The Billion4Charity game serves as the focal point for a variety of charities. Hill says “the infrastructure provides a technology solution for reaching millions of people and providing exposure and information. The game is collaborative, technology driven, and fun!” The Billion4Charity foundation is more flexible than traditional charities, which gives them the ability to make major changes internally without layers of bureaucracy that prohibits direct implementation and execution of support. “When we come across a fundraising idea that we believe will generate a significant return on time, money, and effort, we can implement it immediately. We’ll let the market determine whether it is a good idea rather than going before Boards, Trustees, lengthy meetings and studies before the project can be launched.” Hill, 49, has a bond trading, structured finance and investment banking background. He has been involved with charitable work and volunteerism since his early years in college. Thinking he had a model that would encourage millions of people to play and could generate a billion dollars for many worthy causes inspired him…. thus, Billion4Charity was born. The million dollar award winner will be announced on July 19, 2015. Hill says the July 19th date is both unusual and significant for him. “It’s the late ESPN Sportscaster Stuart Scott’s birthday. He was my favorite of all time. He passed away from cancer in January. The fight against cancer is personal for me in another way; my mother is a cancer survivor.” The disease took others in his family including his grandfather. “As a Track & Field athlete and sports fan, I admired Stuart’s character so much that we felt compelled to make this statement.” To provide transparency and security for playing the game, they are using the largest money center bank in the world as custodian of the funds – Citibank. KPMG is the accounting firm that will provide a review of the transfer of money to the charities. The Billion4Charity Game officially launched on January 1, 2015. The winner of the one million dollar cash prize will be selected on July 19, 2015.
