Spring Excitement!

L

ocal charities, school fundraisers and other fun events have been popping up constantly this last month and the season has just begun. Check out the Save the Date calendar to find out about more fun activities coming your way. These rewarding and well thought out events are a blast, so have fun attending, while supporting a good cause. I am really looking forward, for instance, to attending the The Silicon Valley Caper. View the spread on pages 6 and 7 for more information and register to attend this excellent Los Gatos EMQFF traditional event. We highlight plenty of adult play-time even though much of it is ultimately for the kids, such as the Caper fundraiser and the St. Mary’s fundraiser featured in this issue. I get many questions, however, from parents of young children, asking what they could do with their kids over the summer. Last issue we included information on Hoberg’s Resort which has a family environment, along with adult spa. I want to now, however, bring up a place close to home that is truly a gem for the community for a potential art student of any age. Blossom Hill Crafts will explore the deep creative in you or your child. You don’t just paint an object off of an assembly line, or a custom ceramic object created by someone else. This is the real deal. You design from start to finish, starting with the raw clay. It is truly a creation you will appreciate and pass down from generation to generation. If you have the time and even a touch of inner artist trying to get out, take the class and you will not be sorry! See their ad with a special incentive on page 17. EDITOR PHOTO

Makeup and hair designed by dollhouse salon. Wilhelm Derksen Photography took this editor photo. Engage or inquire about his services by calling (408) 605-4307. Along the playtime theme, comes another topic we are all aware of... your image. This issue we welcome Paulette Tsigaris and Stavroula who have just opened their stylish Redkin certified hair salon named dollhouse Salon. They are providing hair, nail and makeup services and Redkin products. Give it a try and awaken your “inner doll.” The elegant studio design and ambiance are worth a visit in itself. See their ad on page 5 and don’t hesitate to make an appointment. Your ensemble is not complete however, without a fashionable outfit to go with, so make sure to take advantage of the huge savings offered to you by your very own Shoe Candy of Los Gatos on Main Street. See Lucille’s ad on page 15 and then go have fun! If your home is in need of some image work and you have worn out your honey-do list card, then make sure to get some help from a professional. Three amazing companies are reaching out to you this issue and ready to make your wish list a reality; Cinnabar Builders, CASE Remodeling and Cherie Rose Collection. Spruce up now so your home is prepared for summer celebrations. Word from the realtors is that the local market is doing well. Let’s hope this trend continues as it can only mean great things ahead. To include your graduate’s photo in our next issue, send us an email. Wishing Class of 2012 my best. LG Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Particpants of The Great Silicon Valley Caper raise funds to benefit privately-funded programs like Family Finding

EMQ FamiliesFirst

Y

ou may have heard of the “The Great Silicon Valley Caper” advertised here and benefiting EMQ FamiliesFirst (EMQFF). This year you can compete as sleuths in an easy walking mystery hunt through Los Gatos. After champagne brunch at the Opera House, you’ll follow clues and unlock mysteries around the quaint downtown area. Then return for a fabulous dessert and learn which team takes home top private eye honors while bidding in both silent and live auctions full of enticing trips, tickets, gifts, gourmet items and the famous wine wall. The event depends upon corporate and family sponsors as well as attendees. EMQFF has a long standing presence in Los Gatos, including dedicated non-profit fundraising shops, The Butter Paddle and The Happy Dragon. Since 1867, EMQ FamiliesFirst has grown from a single orphanage to a statewide agency offering a range of community-based programs to children in crisis and their families. Its rich history involves an evolution and blending of best practices. The name EMQ (Eastfield Ming Quong) represents the merging of two children and family services agencies. Eastfield Home of Benevolence, founded in San Jose in 1867, an orphanage providing shelter, care and education for local homeless youth. Ming Quong Presbyterian Mission Home, founded in 1874, rescued Chinese girls from slavery and prostitution in the alleys of San Francisco and later added a home in the hills of Los Gatos. For more history check out the current exhibit at the Los Gatos Museum. The agencies merged in 1987 and were renamed EMQ Children & Family Services. In 2006, EMQ merged with Hollygrove, the Los Angeles Orphans Home Society, founded in 1880 which served children in Los Angeles, including a young resident called Norma Jean Baker (Marilyn Monroe). In 2009, the agency merged with FamiliesFirst, which began in Davis

in 1974 as the Praul Center, a group home for emotionally disturbed boys. Through 142 years of experience, EMQ FamiliesFirst has transformed its system of care for California’s children and families. Why help this specific humanitarian cause? To answer, we include current statistics, case studies, and invite you to attend The Great Silicon Valley Caper event presented by EMQFF, May 20 at 11:30am at the Los Gatos Opera House (www.greatsiliconvalleycaper.com), (408) 364-4044. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, in California a child is abused or neglected every four minutes. With the number of children in crisis growing, private donations make the difference between a child receiving services or being denied basic needs (such as food, bed, sheets, shoes...). No longer does government funding cover the costs of service, let alone the extra care that truly makes a difference in the life of the children and families EMQFF serves. With private financial assistance EMQFF helps reconnect children to relatives that these children never knew existed; provide emergency help with food and lodging; buy a child a birthday or holiday gift; continue counseling services when government funding is not available; recruit and train the best foster and adoptive families; and train staff. Their Family Finding program reconnects children with safe, healthy biological family members to speed their recovery from emotional trauma. Prior to Family Finding implementation in September 2003, only 37% of youth who were not living with family at entry to EMQFF 24/7 Intensive Family Services program were discharged to families. Now, it is expected that 70% of the children will be reunited with families and that 90% will establish viable family connections.

Trends Impacting California’s Children & Families • Annually, over 400,000 children are referred to the child welfare system in California. • Everyday in the U.S. at least 3 children die from child abuse and neglect. More than 85% are under age six and 44% are under the age of one. • One-third of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize their own children. • Up to 70% of youth in the juvenile justice system suffer from previously untreated mental health needs. • Abuse and neglect increase the likelihood of adult criminal behavior by 28% and violent crime by 30%. • Abused and neglected children are 25% more likely to experience problems in adolescence such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use, and mental health issues. • Approximately one in five American children has a mental disorder. In California, up to 875,000 children are estimated to be seriously emotionally disturbed. LG Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Trevor was a hopeless, withdrawn and aggressive 14 year-old when he arrived at a Residential Treatment Facility for the most severely disturbed adolescents. He showed very little enthusiasm for anything. He hadn’t had a permanent home since he was four and had lost contact with his family. In collaboration with Trevor’s County Department of Family and Children’s Services worker, EMQ put in motion their new Family Finding training. A team began with a family tree, and during this process, the discussion led Trevor to pull out a photo of an older brother, Brian, who the team had never heard about, but whom Trevor had never forgotten. The team was able to locate out-of-state grandparents, who were interested in communication. Later they tracked his maternal aunt and an uncle who had not been lost, but who was not considered for a permanent home for Trevor. The father was reengaged to form a partnership to be a part of his son’s life. At a family meeting, the father told those gathered that Trevor’s family included only the few who were currently in the room, but by the end of the meeting, there were over sixty names of family members to research. Later, Trevor’s aunt revealed he had yet another older brother, Mark, that he did not know existed. He was Trevor’s biological brother who had been raised by his own paternal grandparents in another state and who had never known the maternal side of his family. When the aunt told Trevor this he smiled and said “cool”. For Trevor, this was the equivalent of turning cartwheels on the lawn! There were tears, laughter, hugs and family photos shared that day. Immediately after Trevor was reunited with family and given his new home, his demeanor and behavior began to improve. Today Trevor is still living with his uncle and cousin. He has had overnight visits with his aunt, met her children and husband, and receives letters and phone calls from grandparents. Recently, he spent a week in Nebraska on his own getting to know family members. He has friends and has recovered from his bouts of anxiety. This is a teenager with hope for the future.

o, here’s the deal. You’re looking for something new to watch on television. You can’t dance, you can’t sing, you’ve already been voted off the island and Law & Order is a rerun,” says Michael Jacobi, Jazz Tonight! show host and Jazz on the Plazz producer. Why not catch Jazz Tonight presented by Three Degrees at The Toll House and LG Los Gatos Lifestyle Magazine? Have you heard of it? In a nutshell, you will get to learn the personality of the artist presenting at the Jazz on the Plazz festival. Michael Jacobi does a fantastic job interviewing them and learning their inspiration and other fun tidbits about the artists that you may not know. His goal is to make their performance that much more meaningful and memorable for you. “Since the show’s inception four years ago, Jazz Tonight! has brought some of the most interesting and talented jazz artists in the world to Los Gatos TV and computer screens,” Jacobi added. We’ve asked Celo Lane if she enjoyed being a Dame, Jack Jones about Sinatra’s influence on him and heard Barbara Morrison’s take on the derivation of The Blues. Each summer we are blessed to talk with folks who love what they do. Hearing them at jazz on the plazz is one thing. Finding out what got them there is quite another. Jazz Tonight’s executive producer, Marguerite Padovani (Jazz on the Plazz volunteer) of Padovani Communications bridges all these groups together to produce and coordinate with KCAT Channel 15 to broadcast a weekly show for viewers to watch each week that airs on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and produced in part thanks to a grant from Knew TV. So join us for a behind the scenes look at America’s only true musical art form... Jazz. For more information about the show and schedule, visit our Facebook page at: Jazz Tonight. aised in an academic-dominated family, Bruce naturally started his education to become a teacher, but decided his heart was elsewhere. Bruce began cooking as a teen out of necessity as he was the only one in his family who enjoyed cooking, and although he developed a culinary zeal, like many in the valley, he fell into a high tech career. Twenty-five years later, when Bruce remarried, he and his new wife Kris, had a terrible catering experience, which turned into an inspiration. The following spring, Bruce endeavored on a journey to enroll and graduate from culinary school and the last six years, he has been passionate about offering instructional cooking classes and catering services through his company A Party for Your Palate. I experienced his class recently and was amazed, but please listen to commentary from one of his longtime students to best understand. “I first signed up for Bruce’s class on a recommendation of a friend. I had actually just taken a class a Sur La Table a few months earlier, and was disappointed about the way their class was run. I have been an active home cook for the last 7 years or so, and have been looking ways to learn “real techniques” beyond watching food network. After Bruce’s first class - his soup class - I was hooked. That one class alone taught me about techniques, classes of soups, ways to make broth, and what to look out for at the market - more helpful information than any other class or tv show, combined. From this first class, I’ve signed up for every consecutive lesson, learning how to create delicious comfort foods, appetizers, Asian cuisine, and am already signed up for the brunch class this month. Bruce’s classes cater to people like me, who want to learn how to cook all these delicious items, while allowing the less frequent cook to simply watch and taste. I was surprised at my first class when Bruce did all the cooking himself. I had become used to the Sur La Table type classes, where a group of 10 people split up, and work on a different part of the meal - or dish. With these classes, you often miss

a few important steps, and don’t always get the attention from the teacher. Because Bruce does all the cooking, you can see every step of every meal, with very clear and understandable directions. Bruce also stops to answer questions, which proves helpful if you’re taking notes, and really want to cook the meal at home. Overall, I love Bruce’s passion for cooking, and feel lucky he wants to share his joy and information. Bruce allows you to learn simple and complex technique, explains why you do certain things in the kitchen, and makes you better understand the art of cooking. The price of his class is a steal, whether you’re looking for cooking instruction, or just want to watch and sample a delicious meal - you wouldn’t get this amount of food for this price, anywhere else... I have even hired Bruce for an important personal event, knowing that I’ll get someone who truly cares about the food he will serve.” — Darrin Shimizu In addition to wowing his faithful students, Bruce is also very involved with the community giving back. Besides offering private classes to be auctioned off at local schools, he has also been involved with a volunteer program for 4th graders for the last 11 years. Bruce welcomes a call from you to discuss his group classes whether you want to join an existing class or create your own with friends. It’s an evening of fun, food, friends new and old, and the best part, you get to eat too! There are new classes every month, so come back often to experience all new things. St. Mary’s Annual Spring Auction Fundraiser Una Noche Brillante!

S

aturday April 28th, parents, alumni, and friends of St. Mary’s school gathered for a festive evening marked by silent and live auctions, dinner, and dancing. The school’s largest annual fundraising event, the St. Mary’s Spring Auction, themed Una Noche Brillante! attracted brightly colored, well-dressed couples in the warm and friendly environment of Palacios Restaurant. The auction tables were prepared meticulously and it was apparent much thought and care preceded the event. Proceeds from the auction directly support the learning environment in the form of educational materials, books, financial aid, technology improvements, music, and teachers’ salaries. This year’s theme and the planning committee’s goal, was for guests to feel transported to experience the beauty and splendor of a brilliant Latin night. Guests sampled fabulous Latin inspired cuisine, danced to great music, and bid on a well-rounded variety of auction item (as there was something to please everyone) all while enjoying the special camaraderie of the St. Mary’s community. “Our vision was to create an elegant evening, where we come together for fun, friendship and fundraising”, says Evelyn Barrett, Auction Co-Chair. “The real focus of the Spring Auction is on the students who attend St. Mary’s School. Our children are so very fortunate to attend a school where the entire community – staff, faculty, administrators, and parents – work selflessly to give them the best that an education can offer”, says Kelle Remmel, Auction Co-Chair. “We extend our sincerest thanks to our donors, underwriters, and guests for their contributions to our efforts!”

ello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF). 10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of 838-3006 Oaktechnologies. Meadow Park, crazy My favorite was one that looked like a(800) hair dryer from 233 space Blossom outer thatHill wasRd. supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN
