The Los Gatos History Club does not actually study history, yet this philanthropic group is living it! Established back in 1897, this committee of vivacious women have created an enjoyable and giving lifestyle in Los Gatos, and from the beginning of their existence to their current membership, important role models have been involved. The camaraderie is apparent from their lengthy memberships.

WELCOMING WARMTH

L

os Gatos never fails to excite! I really enjoyed attending the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner on July 20th. During this event held at the La Rinconada Country Club I was witness to Darrell Monda from the Los Gatos Morning Rotary and the Los Gatos Community Foundation (amongst other groups) receiving the 2011 MVP-Most Valuable Professional award. It was well deserved: Darrell is recognized in 2011 for his tireless volunteer work benefitting the community. There are reminders throughout Los Gatos of his contributions, and it is evident he means to continue. What I like most about Darrell is that he has a good time and great attitude, no matter what project he is working on, and he considers his volunteer work as important as his career. Read the Leaders story in this issue to see what Darrell is currently up to. Hint: Crustacean meets Irish Pub. Hope to see you there! The 411 is on pages 14-15. This issue we also visit the lovely ladies of the Los Gatos History Club. I was fortunate enough to be invited to their fashion show fundraiser this year, as they raised money to benefit the new Los Gatos library. Their creativity and daring is second to none, as members bravely took to the runway, modeling various fashions during the luncheon. It was priceless, and a great time was had by all. My photo this issue was done by my favorite portrait photographer, Charlene Chavez. She is a pleasure to work with. We decided to have dinner out one evening, at the restaurant where her son is currently working. It is the new place in town, Palacio Restaurant. What a treat! While waiting for our table, we enjoyed the spiciest margarita I have ever drunk. It was a Jalapeùo margarita and not made for the tame. Speaking of hot, I am quite a Zumba enthusiast. (Zumba is a spicy mix of Latin inspired, calorie-burning dancing.) I will be performing with my class, in fact, at the Grande-Licious Family Festival August 21st. Do you Facebook? You can visit the LG Magazine page for more information on this event. If your schedule is free that Sunday, it is a great way to spend the day, as you will discover some great facts in the New Almaden Mining Museum at the Casa Grande and can visit their period-specific decorated rooms that make you feel like you are stepping back in time. Outside, there will be more athletic performances, live music, food and beverages, DJ music, charity representatives, vendor booths with bling, hair feather extensions, airbrush tattoos, photography and lots of fun activities for you to enjoy. I can’t wait, so if you attend, be sure to find me and say hello! LG Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

I

History Clubof Los Gatos

f you are looking for a fun group of intelligent women to bond with while doing good deeds, look no further. The Los Gatos History Club founded in 1897 by six determined and civic-minded women, currently boasts 82 goodhearted members and is ready to add more. You may have driven past their clubhouse hundreds of times without ever visiting, so let me inform you about the Club’s colorful history and their current philanthropic and social endeavors. “I’m very proud to be part of such a long tradition of philanthropic contributions to the community. Not only do we hold fundraisers, but we also make donations based on our net rental income. Anyone looking to make a direct impact while working with a great group of gals should definitely look at joining the History Club.” Therese Wiese, Treasurer What’s in a name? Let’s start there. The female founding members fundraised and pooled their money to purchase their club building, (in essence a historical event in itself ). They began this club to discuss history and travel, both national and abroad. During an era before National Geographic Traveler Magazine and Club Med, traveling to exotic locations was a risky and cumbersome event, so when one made an extraordinary journey it was common to share the post-adventure with friends, and in this case, fellow Club members. They found themselves, however, more and more interested in helping the community, and by 1907 the philanthropic non-profit had expanded and incorporated. While they remained a social group with monthly meetings, they chose to contribute to important heart-felt community projects, consistent with the times. Besides helping local groups, during WW I the Club members rolled bandages and during WW II they acted as a USO—a support organization for U.S. troops sacrificing in defense of our country. In 1923 they provided the beautiful Deodara tree that serves as the Los Gatos Christmas tree,

and last year they contributed to replacing the old lights with new LED lights for that tree. The tradition carries on: in 2008, they collected food and toiletries for a unit in Iraq whose commander was from Los Gatos. There are some members that have been involved for decades and have watched the club culture establish. “Membership always rises to the occasion. Whenever called upon, they always make it work! Our motto is ‘He who will, can’. You can’t buy the comraderie we have,” shares member, Fran Alfson who is 97 years old. Fran once held the History Club President position, chaired the Garden Committee for a period, and still helps out in the gardens planting new plants, weeding, and deadheading roses. Rosalie Thimann has been a member since 1958, “I love Los Gatos. I have lived here since 1953. The History Club is a wonderful way of supporting the community and is a place to make life-long dear friends.” They rebuilt the current facility in the 1950’s. The net profits from renting out their clubhouse are distributed to the community in the form of grants. Their primary focus is supporting the welfare of women and children, with an emphasis on health and education. The building is rented for weddings, parties and other group events. Joanne Brice, a History Club member since 1983, has held position of rental chair since 1993. “The Clubhouse is a large, modern air conditioned facility. As Rental Chair I work with many caterers and individuals arranging for the rental of our facility for a wide range of events - weddings, parties, meetings, etc. The main room, with beautiful hardwood floors and stage, seats 150 (or 200 for standup events) for stand up events. We have a large covered patio, a lovely landscaped garden and a redwood deck and gazebo. Proceeds from our rentals support the many and varied philanthropic efforts of our Club.”

Billy Jones, born in 1884, a son of a lumberjack with parents who came to California with the Donner party, began working for Southern Pacific Railroad at age 13, became a locomotive fireman at age 17 and engineer at age 21. In 1917 he purchased a 9-acre prune orchard in Los Gatos. The following year he married and proceeded to have four children, two sons and two daughters. In 1939 he found and purchased the little locomotive that was to become the start of the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad. Sadly, Billy lost his sons during the war, and found solace by offering train rides to kids. 3. “Jubie” is a nickname for Jubilee, which was a 1937 celebration called the Golden Jubilee of Los Gatos. The men shop owners had to grow beards as part of the celebration. Paul Arnerich, Jubie’s father, enjoyed the celebration. Neighbors came by after the event and asked “How was your Jubilee?” The name was catchy and Paul began calling his infant daughter (born that weekend), “Jubilee” and the nickname took. “After retiring as an elementary school teacher in Los Gatos, I felt I now had the time to join a community organization. A U G U S T - S E P T E M B E R 2 0 11

Just a few simple changes can make a big difference when it comes to controlling cancer risk. Stay happy, healthy, AND enjoy your food.

|

ast issue, I discussed one of the simplest ways to lower risk for heart disease (the #1 killer of both males and females) by eliminating partially hydrogenated fats in the diet. This issue, I will address the #2 killer of men and women, which is cancer. These topics may seem a bit “doom and gloom” but my goal is to have my clients live the longest, healthiest lives possible. The overall incidence of cancer has remained stable since 1991 and mortality has declined gradually as survival rates have improved. In the United States, 55% of all cancer diagnoses in the US are either lung, prostate, breast or colorectal. The following guidelines are quoted directly from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR). The italicized text summarizes some of the studies done to support each guideline. 1. Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight. Fat is a gland, and too much fat produces estrogen (estrione) which increases risk of breast and endometrial cancers. 2. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day. Regular exercise keeps the digestive tract working well, and can result in a more rapid passage of waste, which may decrease the incidence of colorectal cancer. Plus, regular exercise promotes changes in body composition that can decrease fat cells. (See Guideline #1) 3. Avoid sugary drinks. Limit consumption of energy dense foods (particularly processed foods high in added sugar, low in fiber, or high in fat). Increased sugar consumption (by way of increased insulin levels) may stimulate the growth of pancreatic cancer cells. 4. Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes such as beans. Onion and especially spinach and cabbages contain the flavonols quercetin, kaempferol and myricetin which may protect against pancreatic cancer especially in smokers. Lycopene found in tomatoes may be protective against prostate cancer. 5. Limit consumption of red meats (such as beef, pork and lamb) and avoid processed meats. Subjects who ate the most red meat (3 or 5.5 oz per day depending upon the study) were 30-35% more likely to develop colorectal cancer. Post-menopausal women who frequently consumed grilled, cured, barbecued or smoked red meats had a 47% increase in their breast cancer risk. Protect your proteins by cooking “low and slow.” Opt for steaming, braising and poaching most often. When using the BBQ, marinate the meat ahead of time and turn meat frequently to maintain lower surface area temperatures. 6. If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to 2 for men and 1 for women a day. 7. Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with salt (sodium). 8. Don’t use supplements to protect against cancer. All ACIR studies that showed benefits of certain substances were conducted using whole foods, not supplements.

Claws for a Cause 7th Annual

September 10, 2011

I

f you are looking for a good time, don’t miss the 7th annual Claws for a Cause (Los Gatos Lobster Party) on September 10th. The Claws for a Cause is presented by the Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club, in partnership with C.B. Hannegan’s Irish Pub to support music, art and youth scholarship programs. Just thinking about this event, which features all-you-can-eat fresh Maine lobster and tri-tip, is enough to make one’s mouth water. Last year’s “block party” dinner sold out, so make sure to get your ticket now. “I have been living in Los Gatos since 1996 and I have seen a lot of events. The lobster fest is a great Los Gatos tradition! One that is not to be missed.” Jorja Smith You may recall an earlier article in LG Magazine, written about Darrell Monda, which listed organizations he was a part of and described his involvement. It took two pages to list his many achievements, but his heart was definitely wrapped around Claws for a Cause, as he proudly recalled initiating the very first one. He has been involved every since. In 2004, Darrell attended a St. Patty’s Day fundraiser at C.B. Hannegan’s, which was what sparked the location inspiration. He liked what he saw. Mark Brodsky, another Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club (LGMRC) member, had regularly attended an all you can eat lobster party in Hawaii each year. They convened a lobster committee, and the brainstorming commenced. Darrell originally suggested lobster tails, but another committee member insisted on live lobsters, which, in retrospect, is a good thing, considering the catchy name of the event! Darrell approached Johnny Hannegan to inquire if he would be interested in holding this new event at his location, and with his confirmation, the event was born. At the same time, Darrell worked with about fifteen seniors from the SJSU advertising department to create a design campaign for this fundraiser the Rotary named ‘Claws for a Cause.’ “The artwork was very creative. The students involved all were proud to have this showpiece for their portfolios, and most of them achieved well paying positions quickly after graduating that year,” shares Darrell. The event planning was completed, but they still had the day of the event to plan for.

“We (LGMRC) began to fly the lobsters out from Maine the Friday prior to the party, through Saturday morning. We loaded them into trucks, then took the live lobsters out of the back of the trucks, and the cooking began. During that first dinner we had 2,000 lobsters, and it was really an experiment. Mark brought large pots and gas burners and somehow we made it through. When Mark and I thought of this gathering, we had no idea it would turn out to be a great town event, raising sufficient funds for local non-profits and high school scholarships.” (Collectively, this event allowed over a quarter million dollars to be donated to local charities, scholarships and events.) The event is so renown that rotary groups from other locations now visit this Los Gatos bash for input and to mimic it. The Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce recently awarded Darrell the 2011 MVP-Most Valuable Professional at their Annual Dinner on July 20th, 2011. The event was held at the La Rinconada Country Club. Darrell was recognized for his tireless volunteer work benefitting the community through the many service organizations of which he is a member, such as the Los Gatos Morning Rotary and the Los Gatos Community Foundation. Although Darrell is still tightly entwined with the event, Diana Pleasant is the current Chair, and this is her second year running the show with her dedicated team. “This is an all-hands event with every member of our cool cat morning rotary club involved,” adds Diana. All 75 members of the LG Morning Rotary Club – Cool Cats of Los Gatos will be on deck. The motto is “Stray Cats United, Cool Cats Forever.” We have to thank the owners of C.B. Hannegan’s (best known for their annual St. Patty’s Day celebrations) of course. “It has been our pleasure to host this wonderful party for the last six years, and we look forward to hosting it again this year. The Los Gatos Morning Rotary club has put together the #1 community fundraiser with the Claws for a Causeall you can eat Lobster Block Party.” Says Johnny Hannegan.

All the Lobster you can eat! Featuring the Joe Sharino Band! Dance the night away! Help a great cause!

Sponsors: Darrell is Sponsor Chair this year. Star One Credit Union, Los Gatos Meadows, Lunardi’s Los Gatos and other local businesses have been generous, but he is always looking for more. Ed Stahl from Travel Advisor’s of Los Gatos provided a $2,500.00 cruise for two to the Mexican Riviera with multiple stops, for instance. There are many fabulous prizes and many raffle tickets will be purchased in anticipation. They thank their media sponsor Los Gatos Weekly, who has been very kind. According to Monda, the LG Weekly editor Dick Sparrer, said, “This (Claws for a Cause) is the best annual party that Los Gatos holds.” Recipients: The original recipient was the Los Gatos High School Theatre Improvement Project. The adults involved volunteered to help out at the event. This synergy still continues. Since then, the Los Gatos Education Foundation has been a beneficiary for four years. Los Gatos Morning Rotary Foundation supports grants to local non-profits and scholarships to the three high schools with residents of Los Gatos. Clean Up Crew At 10:30pm when the last song is squeezed out of the band, and they are finished with their encores, the crowd slowly dissipates, except the Rotarian’s and their volunteers as they clean up until about midnight. They then return at 7:00am Sunday morning to continue the big clean up job - disassembling ramps, cleaning utensils and pots, and spray down the whole building. They usually finish about noon, at which time Johnny Hannegan has a hearty breakfast waiting for them, so they can eat and reflect on the excitement of the previous night, the wondrous contributions they are now able to make, and the great feeling throughout the community. To get involved, donate time or funds, or get more information, contact Darrell Monda at (408) 370-3801 or email dlmonda@earthlink.net. LG Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

The Joe Sharino Band, a Los Gatos favorite, begins their evening’s performance as 500 to 1,000 people in the parking lot begin dancing to fun rock and roll music. It is a lively, but very safe environment with groups of friends dancing together, while others begin the food line. The venue now serves 3,000 crustaceans to satisfy this “all-you-can-eat” crowd. (The current “most eaten” record is 17 lobsters consumed by one attendee during the event.) In the back there are 12 large 20-gallon pots where the lobsters are cooked. It is no longer an experiment; the team has the logistics, including county health code regulations, dialed in. “The flow of the line moves strategically quick. I have noticed the improvement through the years. Even while in line, it is an incredibly social time–an opportunity to reacquaint yourself with friends and neighbors.” Don Schallock

attoos have become quite popular. There is some beautiful skin art out there. Unfortunately, there is some artwork that becomes a cause for regret and embarrassment. Unlike most of our mistakes, they don’t fade much over time. A decision that was made at 18 may not be great for the person we are today. There are some promoted remedies I have seen over my years for removing tattoos that can leave terrible results. Many remedies cause infection that can cause long lasting scarring. Thank goodness Laser tattoo removal is an effective way of erasing those mistakes with minimal or no scarring. Much of the scarring experienced by patients was mostly caused by the original tattoo. Although it can be a long process, it is possible to remove an unwanted tattoo. Laser tattoo removal works by breaking up the ink into smaller particles, allowing your body to filter them out. There are many factors in considering the duration of treatments. The various colors of tattoos are treated with different wavelengths and some require more treatments than others. The talent of the artist and what kind of ink was used makes a big difference as well. Black ink is normally the ink to fade the fastest. The next is yellow and then red. The hardest inks and ones that require the most treatments (and may cause scarring) are blue, green and white. The treatments themselves are fairly quick. The time that the laser takes on the skin is generally as long as it would take to color over the tattoo with a crayon. This is great considering that it can be painful, kind of like getting sprayed by bacon grease. There are many methods and preparations that are able to make the removal more comfortable. To reduce discomfort, one can have local lidocaine injections in the area of choice, topical cream, and even freeze the tattoo area with ice packs prior to the procedure. Using the injections is not my favorite due to the breaking of the skin and adding fluid which can cause blistering and infection when there normally is none. With a large tattoo, injections are not a good option. Numbing creams help alleviate much of the discomfort but the patient will feel some of their previous regret. The combinations of icepack and numbing cream are the first and best choice for most cases. The first couple of treatments are the most painful because of the quantity of ink in the tattoo. The laser heats the ink, breaking it up, and allows the body to flush it out and make the tattoo fade. The cause of the pain is the amount of ink, not the laser, as the ink fades it is less painful with each procedure. Treatments are spread 4-6 weeks ideally. You can wait as long as you want in between treatments but coming prior to four weeks would not help it go away any faster. The ink requires this time frame to be flushed from the body. Most professional tattoos can take as little as 5 and up to 15 treatments. Tattoos that have green or blue can exceed that. Having a healthy immune system will assist in filtering the ink faster. Although I offer free consultations, the starting rate for each treatment is $175 for a small black tattoo and goes up from there. If you are engaged to Betty and have Wilma tattooed on your chest, this procedure is priceless… LG

ello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF). 10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and Fullcaused Bar, blistering Fine Wines & Outdoor Pationon-intended Space sometimes or indents from burning tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even Featuring gourmet cuisine with pregnancy. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking 11:30am-2:30pm up Lunch: uneven areas andMon-Fri, shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Dinner: Mon-Thurs, 5pm-9pm Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best Fri-Sat, option for those with excessive 5pm-10pm skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightensBlvd., the laxityLos of theGatos, skin which improves one’s 14109 Winchester CA skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most CPCU, CLU, ChFC areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN
