Nina Derksen who studied photography this year at Leland HS accepted the cover photo assignment this issue with no guarantees her image would be used, and it included a trip to Mount Umunhum. She did an amazing job and even enlisted a hawk to model. I am excited to share her first cover photo.

HEALING THERAPY - Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD, How it works... MLD works on the basic needs of the body to nourish and cleanse cells in an efficient way – a therapy effective for the fundamental building blocks of the body, the cells. MLD is a highly specialized form of massage, which uses light, rhythmical, very precise hand movements, pressures and sequences and requires the therapist to develop a great degree of skill, having an intimate knowledge of the workings of the anatomy of the lymphatic system. The massage works at skin level to influence the direction and speed of lymphatic flow, re-directing if necessary. A treatment commences at the neck to clear the area and ‘make space’ for lymph to be brought there. The next parts of the sequence will depend entirely on why MLD is being performed and the particular needs of the individual. However, lymph follows pre-determined pathways on its journey to the thoracic ducts and is continuous – if space is made at the top of the chain, fluid from lower down can ‘move up’. So areas are cleared for lymph to be brought from other parts of the system. The lymphatic system does not have its own pump (unlike the circulation which has the heart) and relies on movement of muscles in the surrounding area to activate the collection of lymph from surrounding tissues. The act of inspiration acts as a trigger for the lymphatic system to ‘empty’ back into the circulatory system at the base of the neck. The massage is, on the whole, a very light technique. This is because the practitioner is trying to influence vessels that are situated in the skin layers. It may be as well to point out here that Manual Lymph Drainage is NOT the same as some of the ‘Lymph Drainage Massage’ offered by, for example, sports or Swedish-massage therapists which can be a very heavy technique indeed.

Yes, that kind of heavy massage will influence lymph drainage because it will increase circulation of blood to the area being massaged but may not be suitable for someone who has a compromised lymphatic system and it is not nearly as effective in moving fluid as MLD. MLD will remove fluid from tissues without first bringing extra load to the area in the form of circulation. The aim of the MLD therapist is to restore equilibrium in the tissues and ensure that ‘that which enters equals that which departs’. If the body is not in this state of equilibrium, and there is too much fluid in the tissues, they become soft and ‘boggy’ to the touch. If excess fluid is present it can interfere with cell nutrition – oxygen and nutrients will take longer to pass through the tissues and get from the bloodstream to the cells through the interstitial fluid. This will also mean that waste products from cell metabolism will take longer to move from cells to the transport system, which will remove them from the body. If the lymphatic system is functioning well, we feel well. There are many reasons for the Lymphatic system to be sluggish and not functioning well, leaving fluid static in the tissues. Pollution, toxins, poor nutrition, mucus formation, overload from previous viral or bacterial infections etc – these are all things that can give rise to cellular stagnation. —Frances Reckholder, CMT “If you would like to try MLD therapy, please call (408) 888-6103 for a free consultation at my studio conveniently located at 2046 Camden Ave., San Jose 95124”

Summer Fun in Almaden

S

o the 37th Annual Art & Wine Festival is around the corner, and inside this issue you can read about some of this year’s exciting attractions, including among other things a nouveau trending food truck and an up and coming country singer. Of course, you will be able to visit our booth as well and say hello. This year the Assistance League of San Jose, with a majority of members who reside in Almaden, is also celebrating an important milestone— their 30th anniversary and I daresay they have never been so impressive as the feats they have accomplished recently. Find out why this group is growing their membership dramatically and winning District awards. They are not the only local group volunteering to help community children. EMQFF volunteers are busy keeping the Unicorn Thrift Shop thriving. They are looking for more donations and of course, more clientele to purchase these assorted treasures to ultimately raise money for children without homes. Take a quick look at the article if you are interested in getting involved or just want to know more about this location. If you want to “get to know” some local business owners, you have the opportunity to meet Carol Montgomery who is helping promote the American Cancer Society, and also Lynh To is inviting you to Almaden Yogurt Factory Saturday August 3rd for a “buy one, get one free” introductory special to promote their new yogurt shop. For families that enjoy swimming or tennis, view the advertisements for Almaden Swim & Racquet Club and the neighborhood resort lifestyle of the Almaden Country Club which has various social memberships available to the right prospects. These memberships include fine dining and many family activities such as swimming, tennis, and occasional golf. The facility will be upgrading soon, so now is the time to get on board. Full memberships with all the benefits you expect from a high-end country club can also be purchased, for the serious golfer.

As usual there are several therapists reaching out to you this issue, along with a new type of therapy which I have tried myself. It is lymphatic drainage therapy and I personally found it effective. Working out “smartly” as Lindsay Barker from Mission Fitness strives and eating a healthy diet are also very important in your wellbeing. Lindsay reminds us that to get that small waist we all desire, your “desires” in the kitchen need to be tamed. Read his story about your core and avoiding belly fat. Lastly, view the Save the Date events as these programs want your support, business or social awareness. This is a great time of year for gatherings.

The Hills are Alive with Music

n May 16, Simonds Elementary School hosted the Almaden Valley Kids Choral Festival (AVKCF) at South Hills Community Church. Choirs from Simonds, Allen at Steinbeck, Los Alamitos, Almaden Country and Los Gatos Christian Schools performed at the event. Each school performed two songs, and guest conductor Joyce Brokke from Hoover Middle School led all the choirs in singing “What a Wonderful World.” The Almaden Valley Kids Choir Festival was made possible by a $1,500 grant from the Almaden Valley Women’s Club. Stephanie Schweiser, Simonds Music and Technology Foundation VP of Corporate Affairs, applied for the grant on behalf of choir teacher Terry Bermudez. Bermudez has shared her talents, drive and love of music with Simonds’ children for more than 30 years. The Festival was a result of her vision, and the Foundation intends to make it an annual spring event. The Foundation raises more than $250,000 a year to pay for a full time music teacher, a full time computer instructor, a choir teacher and to fund Simonds music and computer programs.

Los Gatos Christian School choir, conducted by Ms. Angela Cesena, performed “Betelehemu” and “I See the Light”. This was followed by Allen at Steinbeck School Choir’s rendering of “Weave Me a Poem” and “I Won’t Grow Up” lead by Mr. Joey Fortino. The Starmites of Almaden Country School, directed by Ms. Julia Hatch and Ms. Sherry Curtis, sang “Sandwiches” and “Make Lemonade.” Mrs. Terry Bermudez’s Simonds Elementary Choir then performed “Ahe Lau” and “Crawdad Song”. Finally, the whole group took the stage to perform “What a Wonderful World” together. “Mrs. Bermudez envisioned the choral festival as a non-competitive, fun activity for the children, and a chance for them to showcase all their talent and hard work. Having additional performance opportunities is invaluable to young musicians, and becoming aware of the larger choral community should be very encouraging to them. As music is a vital adjunct to and enrichment of the academic studies in many Almaden Valley schools, we hope to continue having a festival every spring and to see it grow.” Josephine Taubert, SMTF Board member, comments.

“We thank the Almaden Valley Women’s Club for selecting Mrs. Bermudez and Simonds to receive their grant, making this event possible,” said Kari Salo, president of the Foundation. “We are so excited for all of these elementary age students to share what they have learned in music at their schools with each other and the community.”

Exam, Consultation, and any necessary X-rays all for $25

The kids began the festival with warm-up exercises then went right into performances by each individual choir. Ms. Ramona Rivera conducted Los Alamitos Elementary Chorus in “ I Like to Sing” and “Goodbye, Farewell”. 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

“The Cause” is to provide for children who are in desperate need for medical attention, in need for education, in need for a place to stay, a place to call home. Far from the madding crowd of Silicon Valley, away from the traffic jams and the noise, in quiet Almaden Valley is this thrift shop, hidden between a pizza place and a convenience store in a small sleepy strip mall. But, this shop is anything but sleepy. Six days a week people walk in wondering what exciting things could be available in there and walk out with their arms full of clothes, trinkets for some, collectibles for others, some even dragging out a piece of furniture. Unicorn Thrift shop opened here exactly twenty years ago as an auxiliary of Eastfield Ming Quong (now called EMQ Families First), solely with the purpose of providing additional support for the organization. Eastfield Ming Quong has been helping children and families since the early days of California’s history. It offers innovative treatment and services that help families recover from trauma, abuse and addiction. Locally, there are two homes for children in crisis where they not only receive room and board, but a caring and enriching environment to help ensure that their current situation does not dictate the course of their futures. Mary Poppins I Need to Report Your Income

Experienced Care- Close to Home!

If someone comes to your home to perform certain services (babysitters, nannies, private nurses, maids, yard workers, etc.), you may be a household employer and thus required to pay payroll taxes, sometimes called the nanny tax. While many assume these workers are independent contractors responsible for their own taxes, most of the time that is not how the law sees it. There are two components to the nanny tax: the (i) employer contribution and (ii) employee withholding. The employer contribution includes Social Security, Medicare, federal unemployment and state unemployment taxes, while employee withholding includes social security and Medicare and possibly federal, state and city income taxes. The IRS requires Social Security and Medicare to be paid if you pay $1,800 or more in cash wages during 2013. Payments of $1,000 or more per quarter will trigger federal unemployment tax obligations, and you must register with California’s EDD after paying $750 in cash wages to one or more employees in a calendar quarter. Getting all the proper taxes can be tricky, even for the well intentioned, so consider hiring a payroll service that will process the payments and taxes for you. These services can be quite reasonably priced, and worth the small expense. It’s estimated that 80 to 95 percent of household employers do not pay the required taxes. So, how would you ever be found out? • Unemployment: You terminate your nanny’s employment and she files for unemployment benefits, stating you were her last place of employment (and there is no record you paid employment taxes). • Workers’ Compensation: Your nanny gets hurt while working in your home and she files for Workers’ Compensation. Because you hired her illegally, you don’t have Workers’ Compensation insurance. She reports you in order to obtain Workers’ Compensation benefits. • Social Security: Your nanny retires and claims social security benefits, but when her benefits are lower than she expected, she realizes that for the time you employed her illegally, she wasn’t contributing to social security. To obtain more benefits, she reports you. • Taxes: You characterize your nanny as an independent contractor, so she is responsible for her own taxes… but when the tax bill comes due, she realizes that she’s responsible for both the employer’s and employee’s share of Social Security and Medicare. She goes to the IRS, and they come to you. • Nosey Neighbors: Your neighbor (you know, the one who never really liked you?) sees this worker coming regularly, and the neighbor reports you. Failure to pay appropriate taxes constitutes tax fraud. Consequences can include: • Payment of all back taxes, plus penalties and interest. • Civil and criminal penalties, including fines, potential imprisonment, and a criminal record. • Professional fees to lawyers and accountants to defend you in an audit or criminal prosecution. There is no statute of limitations for failure to report and pay federal employment taxes, so know your obligations and get help if you need it. As with many things in life, the cost of compliance with the nanny tax is far less than the cost of getting caught for being out of compliance. A BUBBLE LOOMING?

The questions I get these days revolve around “Are we facing a real estate bubble”? All the market indicators show a very healthy, solid market with no bubble ahead. Looking at Santa Clara County, the number of pending sales compared to active listings, the ratio is about 60/40. This means homes are selling quicker than it takes to close escrow. Coupled with that, many homes are purchased for cash or for a very high percentage of cash. When loans are involved, lenders are verifying the borrower can repay compared to the lending practices pre-recession. Home values are climbing at a healthy rate and approaching pre-recession prices. Many of my client’s reactions are jaw-dropping surprise when they learn what their home will list for today. As a Realtor, my job is to make your sale as simple as possible, as fast as possible and for the highest price possible. Let’s talk.

95120Fitness What’s the best way to lose belly fat? Almaden Lifestyle

What’s the best way to lose belly fat?

A

s a fitness professional for 25 years, this is by far the number one question I get asked, from both men and women. Belly… love handles… spare tire… and the dreaded muffin-top... call it what you want. It’s the F-spot. Nothing beats great abs. A firm, flat stomach isn’t just the ultimate symbol of a body that’s in great shape—research has shown that abdominal fat puts you at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure than those with pear shapes (fattest in the hips, buttocks, and thighs). Three rules: 1. You can’t out-exercise a bad diet. 2. You can’t spot-reduce the fat on your killer abs. 3. We all have certain areas determined by our genetics where our bodies like to store fat, and those usually are the most stubborn reserves.

And now the good news. Most people think of ab training as hundreds of crunches and sit-ups. Who knows where this got started, but it’s unnecessary and even counterproductive. Abs are just like any other muscles and you train them using the same sets and reps as the rest of your workouts.

The best way to lose belly fat? I suppose I could say the best way is to eat right and exercise regularly, but that’s not why you read my articles! Actually, there’s a growing body of research to show that the TYPE of exercise really matters when it comes to burning belly fat and the fastest way is with a combination of high intensity strength training and interval based cardio. A recent study in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism compared the effectiveness of a traditional high-carb diet and

endurance training plus four days a week of cardio, with a second group that ate a moderate protein low-carb diet combined with high-intensity resistance and interval training four days a week.

The result? Subjects in the second group lost more fat overall (-20.6%) than the normal group (-10.1%). They also gained 2 pounds of muscle (0.9 kilograms) while the cardio-only group, not surprisingly, lost muscle. But here’s the kicker. Abdominal fat dropped by 26% in group two, but by just 13.5% in group one. In other words, subjects in group two lost almost twice as much belly fat as those in group one. Here is the key: intensity. High intensity weight training and interval training are best. If you push very hard through your weight training routines and keep your heart rate up in the 85-90% range, you will have increased calorie burn during exercise. But the really big calorie and fat burning comes in the hours, and even days, of increased metabolism after. Same with cardio. If you throw in intervals of speed running for 1 to 2 minutes with 1 to 2 minutes of recovery at lower speed, you’ll get some of the best fat burning you can have. If you do strength training and interval training either separately or together, you will have the best of both worlds, and the best most efficient fat burning anyone can give you! Last piece of the puzzle? A lot of your midsection is built in the kitchen. No matter how hard you train, no matter how many calories and how much fat you are burning, it won’t help if you eat all those calories back. —Lindsay Barker, Owner, Mission:Fitness Boot Camps for Women

Assistance League San Jose - 30 Years!

T

he ALSJ held their annual member luncheon at La Foret this month and I was astounded as they announced their annual acheivements as these wonderful women graced the Bay Area well beyond expectations. Take a few moments to understand the significance of their contributions to our community and you may even want to thank them. OPERATION SCHOOL BELL This program provides new clothing to disadvantaged school children to enhance self-esteem and academic achievement. Operation School Bell began nearly fifty years ago as a one-woman effort and is now the signature national philanthropic program for Assistance League. As of their last fiscal year ALSJ members provided 3,900 elementary school children in 37 schools with 6,600 uniforms. SCREENING EYES EARLY This program provides vision screening for preschool children. As of the last fiscal year, 925 children at 21 preschools were tested for Amblyopia and other vision problems. If not detected and treated early, there are serious complications as an adult. The ALSJ volunteers are trained by Prevent Blindness of Northern California. Established in 2003. KIDS ON THE BLOCK Explores through puppetry, issues of disability, cultural differences, social problems and acceptance of self and others. This bullying prevention program is targeted to 3rd graders. This last fiscal year ALSJ members presented puppet shows on bullying to 700 3rd graders in 7 schools. READERS ARE LEADERS These volunteers visit classrooms regularly, coming prepared to entertain, enlighten and encourage children by reading age and topic appropriate books throughout the year. This year approximately 1,000 students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades were read to in 7 schools and each class library was gifted 2 books per visit. Established in 2007.

ASSIST-A-SHELTER ALSJ volunteers provided numerous services to two shelters this past fiscal year sorting clothes in the Donation Depot, helping in the Clothes Closet, preparing and serving dinners to 60 residents once a month, sewing 1,150 reusable t-shirt bags, collecting and donating items for Holiday distribution to the residents and assisting with the toddler program. Established in 2012. SENIOR BINGO Volunteers visit two residential care facilities once a month to provide games for 82 residents. Prizes are given along with special foods and music around the Holidays. Established in 1983. CARING HANDS This program supports Valley Medical and Family Supporting Housing. ALSJ members donated 2,000 knit or crocheted items that include handmade blankets and caps for newborns, hand-knitted caps for chemo patients, and 700 handknitted bookworm markers for our Readers Are Leaders Program. HUG-A-BEAR In a cooperative program with city and county agencies, the chapter provides stuffed bears used to ease the trauma of an accident or abuse. In the last fiscal year 5 city and county agencies were given 750 Hug-A-Bears to be given to children in crisis. Established in 1988.

Is it Normal?

M

any of the most common questions we get from parents start with those three words. Kids vary so greatly in their behavior and development patterns that it can be hard to know what is normal and what is not, so here are our answers to a few of the more common, “Is it normal?” questions.

DONALD A. PEPPER, DDS, INC. 408-268-4755

LOCATED AT 6501 CROWN BLVD, SUITE NO. 104

Experience Orthodontic Artistry!

Is it normal that my baby has bowlegs? Yes. Babies are born bowlegged, as bowed shape allows their legs to cross more easily and fit in the mother’s womb better. And allowing your baby to stand will not make the bowing worse. Children will remain bowlegged to about 3 or 4 years when they become “knock kneed”. Their legs will then eventually straighten out around eight or nine years old. Is it normal that my first grader reverses letters? Yes. Children do not develop “spatial consistency” until about eight or nine years old. Until then, you will often see them reverse letters. Common letters to reverse are lower case b, d and e, but it can be any letter. Reversing letters alone, particularly in children younger than eight years is generally not a sign of Dyslexia. If, however, your child is also showing other difficulties in school or falling behind, then it is a good idea to talk to their teacher or pediatrician. Is it normal that my nine year old has body odor and/or mild acne? Probably. Body odor and acne is a sign that the body is maturing but it does not necessarily mean puberty. If your child is around this age and does develop body odor or acne, you can get it checked out to make sure your child is not showing any other signs of puberty. If you get the all clear from the doctor, have them bathe more frequently and it is ok to let them use deodorant. Is it normal that my child is wetting the bed? Most of the time, yes. If your child has always been a bed wetter (called primary enuresis) then there is generally nothing medically wrong (although constipation is a frequent contributor) and may continue into the early teen years. If your child has been dry at night for three or more consecutive months and then they start to wet the bed again (called secondary enuresis) there is a slightly higher possibility of a medical condition, such as a urinary tract infection, and they should be seen by their doctor. Is it normal that my preschooler does not like to write, draw or look at books? Yes. Some kids love to be active, running around from one thing to the next all day long, while others may love to sit quietly and work on the same coloring project for an hour. Both are normal. You can’t make a child enjoy writing or drawing so trying to get the active preschooler to sit down for some quiet time can be an exercise in futility for the parent and frustration for the child. As with many things, it is best to wait until the child is ready. By the time the child is in kindergarten she should be able sit and participate in “circle time” to sit quietly for brief periods of time to work on age appropriate projects.

SHOP for a CAUSE

(UNICORN THRIFT SHOP - CONTINUED)

Beautiful items are donated for the cause and available for purchase, with a constantly changing inventory. Your donations and purchases can help. To increase the financial resources for EMQ, Unicorn was conceived as an ad in the Newspaper. The first few meetings were held in a back room in a bank. Then one very small unit was rented in the mall in the current location. The ads in the paper brought donations from neighboring Almadenites. In this un-carpeted room, with no shelves or tables, Unicorn took roots. With a handful of volunteers, soon the shop next door was acquired and subsequently another shop next to it. One volunteer’s husband took it upon himself to build shelves and tables and the three shops were made as one, with designated areas for each department. Now, Unicorn is indeed a boutique of Almaden Valley. There are now 70 volunteers at Unicorn, eight of them being founding members. All the volunteers have to be commended for their dedication and the time they take away from their homes, to work at the shop. As many are aware by now, the merchandise that Unicorn sells are all from donations and living in Almaden Valley there is never a shortage of that. Due to the enormity of the contributions and rapid turn-around of the items, there is always a dire need for more volunteers. Since its inception Unicorn Thrift shop has donated approximately 2.5 million dollars to EMQFF! Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, need only to come in and fill up an application form and after a few training sessions, you will become one of the many helping hands in Unicorn. Unicorn Thrift Shop is located at 1181 Redmond Avenue, San Jose Ca 95120. They are open Monday – Wednesday, Friday – Saturday 10AM to 5PM and Thursdays 10AM to 7 PM. “Everything looks looks great, great, and and we we are are very very happy happy with with the the end end result. result. “Everything You’ve You’ve delivered delivered on on everything everything we’ve we’ve asked asked for for and and the the results results are are outstanding.” outstanding.”

Welcome to the 37th Annual

Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival

T

he Almaden Valley Women’s Club (AVWC) proudly presents the 37th annual Almaden Valley Art and Wine Festival. The fun happens on Sunday September 15th at the Almaden Lake Park (located on Almaden Expressway and Coleman Avenue) between the hours of 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Admission is free along with entertainment, a great view and the opportunity to participate in the one of our community’s best events. For 37 years, we’ve produced the festival with one goal: to provide an opportunity for our guests to experience a day filled with local entertainment and juried arts and crafts with over 90 artists and craftsmen. You can enjoy premier wines and beer from breweries and wineries in the greater San Jose area served in commemorative glasses. You can also indulge in international food booths staffed by local schools, philanthropic organizations and neighborhood restaurants. The Children’s Area offers a special venue to educate and stimulate children of all ages. The area features child-focused arts and crafts, sports and activities and also features a collage of children’s artwork from local schools and art centers in San Jose. In addition to all of the above, local school bands, dance groups, cheerleaders and professional entertainers perform throughout the day. What’s new this year? We are proud to offer a “premium” wine tent which will have wines from Rombauer Vineyards in Napa, Leal Vineyards in Hollister and David Bruce Estate Wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains. We also have beer trailers this year that will be offering several options from Lagunitas Brewing, Heineken, Full Sail Brewing and a few others we are sure you will enjoy. Skip’s Tire and Auto Center will be hosting the beer garden where you can choose one of the many brands. We have new bands that are guaranteed to entertain you, including The Alison Sharino act 22 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

– which is sure to get you off your feet and up dancing. Food trucks will be in the main parking lot; great food and fun children’s activities will keep the family entertained throughout the day. Be prepared to be entertained! We’re excited to have 8-year old Nayah Damesen open our festival by singing the National Anthem. Next up will be performances from local cheer teams, dance groups and musicians. Our very own District 10 Council Member Johnny Khamis will take the stage to talk about projects, focus and ideas in the afternoon. Shaun Anton, a local country singer on his way up the charts, will be showcasing his original music. Free Fahlen, classic rock band and crowd favorite, will be returning. And did we mention our headliner is The Alison Sharino Band, who will be rocking the house? Oh, and we’re throwing in a Ujam flash mob performance too! Visit our website www.almadenwine.org for more information if you would like to participate in the flash mob. Hungry? The Coop will be teasing our taste buds with tequila lime grilled chicken sandwiches, veggies and fries. There will be home-style tacos, burritos and super nachos from Carmen’s Taqueria. The Rotary of Almaden will be serving Chinese chicken salad. The Kiwanis Club of San Jose will present Italian sausage dogs, strawberry \shortcake and ice cream. But wait! There’s more! Artichoke crab cakes with avocado mango salsa, Salvadorian pupusas, foot long corn dogs, fish & chips and funnel cakes from Sweet delight, kettle corn, dip-n-dots, shaved ice and many others will satisfy your appetite. We will also have two food trucks participating in the mobile food feast on site in the main parking lot.

Pets are not allowed in the Festival area. Since 1965, The Almaden Valley Women’s Club has been committed to serving the needs of the Almaden Valley Community and those of greater San Jose Area, through funds raised at our annual Festival. All proceeds from the Festival go directly back to the communities through scholarships, grants and donations to non-profit groups. This year we are creating a grant specifically aimed for maintenance and/or improvement to Almaden Lake Park.
