10 COLLEGE TIME

We changed the cover art for this issue when Carol Montgomery dropped off a lovely Pointsettia plant at my doorstep. Such a lovely gesture and nice friend. No plant reminds me more of the holidays, except a Christmas tree of course. The bright beautiful, red adds a festive air to the room. Thanks Carol!

Season’s Greetings

T

he holidays are here just in time to distract us from the chilly weather. I hope you have loving family members to share this joyous time with or at least a caring friend or two. We started an outreach program run by Penny Fraley and this issue we included how the various churches in the area are sharing this season. It might be something you would like to explore. The team of businesses involved with 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine wish you and yours a wonderful holiday. Some provide shopping ideas and some present their brand to the community for awareness, but all have been working hard this year and support local schools and/or charities to keep the community thriving, so if you want to make their day, thank them. It is easy to take things for granted, so sometimes we need to reflect and thank the people that make a difference in our own life. I am thankful to my family, contributors, volunteers, friends and customers and hope 2014 will be the year of dreams for all around me. Almaden said goodbye this year to resident Bob Coelho (who was a founding member of Almaden Cares amongst many other great achievements), and my heart goes out to his family, and to all families that have experienced similar loss, during the holidays when it is noticed most.

Editor Photo by Charlene Chavez of Charlene Chavez Photography (see ad on opposite page, p5). Hair style by Drywalk, Blowout Bar (www.drywalk.com). Make up by Staci Deutschman (408) 679-0247 We welcome new advertisers such as Justin’s Restaurant, with a large, well-designed facility in Santa Clara that can fit up to 200 guests. They also pride themselves in catering services and I have been to many parties in both Almaden and Los Gatos that they have catered and have enjoyed each. I look forward to frequenting their new location. They also have a full bar and fabulous wine selection. Lastly, view the Save the Date events for some wonderful lighthearted ideas on spending time over the holiday season. I look forward to hearing from you and finding out what your school, business or organization is up to, or helping you promote your business. If you would like to collaborate, please send me an email.

A Special Tribute to

Bob Coelho November 7, 1941 – August 10, 2013

O

n August 10, 2013, Almaden Valley lost a piece of its heart. Bob Coelho passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. At this time of Thanksgiving, it is fitting to remember the legacy that Bob left behind. His life has been honored in many ways by his family, the community, and his friends. We hope this tribute will serve as another reminder of how one person’s life can touch so many in a positive way. From Gretchen Coelho, Bob’s wife of 48 years: “I knew how special my husband Bob Coelho was, but the sentiments expressed in the over 150 condolence cards I received reflect how valued he was to others as well, specifically in the Almaden community. The following are a few of the special tributes and remarks friends passed on to me on behalf of Bob:” “Bob was instrumental in guiding the other Kiwanis clubs in the division when they decided to restructure their mentoring and selection procedures for Turn Around Scholarship. He made Almaden TAS what it is and the club is renaming its TAS Fund in Bob’s memory to the ‘Bob Coelho Memorial Turnaround Scholarship’.” Belinda Chan, Almaden Valley Kiwanis “Bob was always there to help me. I also remember the wonderful job he did as M.C. at my going away-retirement party. It is mind-boggling to hear all that Bob accomplished. As I said, he was there for me and obviously for everyone else too.” Rocki Kramer, Almaden Valley Counseling Service “For many years, Bob served as my “captain” on election nights. His honor to community and his unwavering diligence to voters and his fellow Kiwanis members was heart-warming.” Joyce Jahnke, Registrar of Voters “We have many fond memories of Bob in our early Almaden days ... Henderson, Little League, Women’s Club, Art & Wine Festival and many more. Bob was a special person with the gift that made a room light up when he walked in. He left a wonderful legacy.” Bob & Pat Dando, Almaden residents “Bob would have celebrated his 72nd birthday on November 7th. He died too soon, but definitely left his mark. I recently attended a conference 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

where I was impressed with the keynote speaker. He said he starts each day by reading the poem (displayed on page 11) that to me is very meaningful. Bob definitely made a difference. I will miss him dearly.” Gretchen Coelho From Darren Coelho, Bob’s son: My Dad learned service through the wide range of activities that he was involved in as he grew up. He caddied at Mid-Pacific Country Club in his youth, eventually using that experience toward representing his alma mater Saint Louis School on the golf team. He also served on ROTC as Saint Louis, ultimately further defining the leadership, discipline, and skill he learned there into his years in the U.S. Army. I recently visited my Dad’s alma mater, Saint Louis School, while in Honolulu in October, and was able to walk the halls and meet some folks who remembered him from his years there in the late ‘50s. There were yearbook pictures of my Dad, showing him active in the campus’ extracurricular activities, from athletic to philanthropic. I believe my dad learned the importance of involvement when he was young and clearly took that to a different level after his school years. Because of my Dad’s strength, I guess I could have seen him as Superman ... but in reality, because his web was so wide, I think that he was more like Spiderman. What I mean is – he seemingly knew everybody and everybody knew him, and as our family friend, Martha Kelley, has said multiple times, I don’t think that anyone disliked him. From Erin Coelho Blodgett, Bob’s daughter: One of the many things I learned from my Dad was to always make time for and to care about others. He modeled this for us in so many ways … in the community with his countless hours of volunteer work; in our family with his commitment to putting us before his career; and with his dear friends by dropping everything to help someone in need. My Dad was a person you could count on. Continued on page 11

Remembering Bob Coelho, Continued from page 8

“I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be “happy.” I think the purpose of life is: ... to be useful ... to be responsible ... to be compassionate.

It is, above all:

... to matter ... to count ... to stand for something ... to have made some difference that you lived at all.” — Leo Rosten

I always knew how important my brothers and I were to my Dad; but nothing could prepare me for the love and pride he had for our girls and his other grandchildren. It meant the world to him to attend their sporting events, musical performances and school activities. The kids always knew when he was there and it was just as important to them. Often times, there would be a special hand signal made to acknowledge their “Buddy” (typically the “shaka” sign). My Dad truly cared about others and you knew that because of his big beautiful smile, his warm hugs, his sincere wisdom, and his ongoing involvement in your life. When you were in his presence, you could feel his love and it made you feel special. I know many people will remember his infectious laugh. There was nothing greater than watching my Dad crack up, as my brothers told him a funny story or as he recounted a clever thing one of his grandkids had done. My Dad made a choice when he was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. In true form, he chose to LIVE as fully as he could, to LOVE with all of his being, and to LAUGH whenever possible. My Dad knew the secret to a good life and he shared that life with so many. He did the very best he could and enjoyed himself right up until the moment he passed away. We are left with a big void with the passing of my Dad, but it is important to remember that he will live on with each one of us. Rob Coelho, Bob’s son Bob Coelho was my hero. He stressed the importance of hard work, kindness, laughter, and meaningfully helping others—especially kids. To me he was simply dad. But our boys called him Grandpa Shaka. Hawaiians use the shaka (“hang loose” sign) to convey the Aloha spirit— a concept of friendship, love, compassion and solidarity. Like “Aloha,” the shaka says, “howzit,” “thanks,” and “all right!” Drivers use it to express gratitude. And my boys used it to greet their grandpa, just as he used it to praise them and others. He truly was Grandpa Shaka—to our kids and all of Almaden Valley. He constantly made time to volunteer for his community and improve life for us and others throughout the South Bay Area, creating smiles wherever he went. He baked cakes for everyone’s birthday; encouraged us to do well in school and praised us for doing so; attended our countless basketball and baseball games, track and crosscountry meets, performances, and academic ceremonies— no matter when or where they occurred; coached youth sports teams and served as the President of the Almaden Little League; joked with Key Club student volunteers while raising money for the local counseling center; obtained auction items for the Leland High School Booster Club; worked with kids as part of the Champs Foundation; volunteered as an assistant coach for the Leland Boys Varsity Basketball team for five years after all his kids had graduated; served as a founding member and constant volunteer for the Almaden Kiwanis Club; personally incorporated Almaden Cares; and—his passion for the past few years— raised money to reward, honor and empower young men and women through the Kiwanis Turnaround Scholarship. There’s not much in Almaden he didn’t help create or improve. He planted his feet when he talked to people. And he spread the joy of shaka throughout our schools, our teams, and our neighborhoods. Dad, we’ll always love you. You’ll always be the epitome of shaka. Martha Kelley, Almaden Cares Almaden Cares was started several years ago after a horrific car accident on Almaden Expressway killing one teenager and sending another to prison. We talked about how the community buzzes with horror for about three weeks and then the memory fades and life goes on. We decided that that could not continue. Our motto became “we cannot keep losing our kids. We will not forget these kids.” Bob Coelho was at the forefront of this mission. He was determined that we could and would make a difference even if we reached only one or two. Thanks to Bob’s perseverance and tenacity, we have reached many more. Knowing how closely Bob held this mission to his heart, we have rededicated ourselves to continue his work.

Experienced Care- Close to Home!

Man’s Best Friend – When His Bark is Not Worse than His Bite

T

here are over 70 million dogs in our country, and California has the most dogs of any state. In fact, about 40% of households have a dog. Given that, you may not be surprised to hear that there are “dog bite” laws, but you may be surprised at how strict the laws are. In California, owners are strictly liable for any injuries that their dogs cause due to biting, as long as the dog bite victim was in a public place or lawfully on private property. What does strict liability mean? It means that even if you did not have any prior knowledge your dog had the propensity to bite people, you are still held responsible for the dog bite, even if you take steps to prevent the dog from biting others, such as using a fence, a leash or posting a “beware of dog” sign. Contrary to popular belief, in California, there is NOT a “one-bite” law (the idea that until you know your dog is a biter, you are not liable) – in fact, the law specifically states the liability attaches regardless of whether you knew your dog might be violent. Whether the dog bites a human or attacks another dog, damages can be recovered. Humans can recover damages for injuries based on a variety of legal theories. In the case of a dog attacking a dog, damages may include the price of a similar pet, money spent on the pet (medical, registration, etc.), and in some cases, even damages to compensate the owner for mental anguish relating to the loss or harm to the pet. How much can the damages be? In a somewhat peculiar case, comedian Katt Williams had a $28,000 bill dispute with his producer. He apparently decided to solve that by showing up to the studio with an attack dog. He then allowed this attack dog to attack the producer’s dog, seriously injuring it. Even though this was a personal injury case between two dogs, the producer was ultimately awarded $575,000 in damages!

If a dog attack does happen, what should you do? Seek medical attention Bad bites may require stitches or reconstructive surgery. What if it is not a bad bite? You should still seek medical attention. While we have all heard that a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s, that is not actually true. In any event, a dog’s mouth has bacteria that can create a serious infection, and could also have rabies. Be safe and seek medical help as soon as you can. File a Report Does this seem like an overreaction? Even if the dog was owned by a friend or neighbor, you still may want to file a police report or animal control report, as it will be the best way to create a record of your attack (in case you do need to pursue legal action). It also puts the public on notice that this may be a dangerous animal.

Whether managing a small business or household employees, let us take the worry away. Get the capabilities of a large, national payroll service, but with the personalized service you’d expect from a small, local business.

Contact a Dog-Bite Lawyer OK – this is not me, for the record. But there are attorneys out there who specialize in this kind of case. They can advise you as to what your rights are, but you’ll need to provide them a full and accurate report as to what happened before they can properly advise you of your options. So, have your facts together before you contact them.

By recognizing the top tutor each year, we hope to reinforce that his or her dedication and passion to the community is highly praised and encouraged.” The top 3 finalists were announced on October 16, 2013 and our local tutor, Alan Motter from San Jose has made it to the top 3! Alan has over 15 years of tutoring experience, has been with Tutor Doctor since 2011 and has tutored over 30 Tutor Doctor students. He is a truly exceptional teacher and has worked with all age groups from Elementary to adult. His areas of expertise include all Elementary and Middle School subjects as well as High School Math, High School Spanish, High School Language Arts and all levels of Psychology (he has an MA in Psychology). Alan is also SAT Prep Trained by Study Point and was the Team Lead and co-author, creating a comprehensive SAT Prep Program that more than 300 Tutor Doctor Franchisees worldwide have adopted! Every SAT Prep student Al has tutored has significantly increased their score and some have even received full scholarships to prestigious universities! Alan has also trained with LindamoodBell for Dyslexia and has worked with several Dyslexic, Special Needs and ADD, ADHD students. Alan is not only an exceptional tutor, but also a great mentor, coach, cheerleader and child advocate for every student he comes in contact with. He has a passion for teaching and is able to reach, motivate and empower the children he tutors. “His dedication is unparalleled among any tutor I have come into contact with and has had positive feedback from all 30 different families he has worked with” according to Rebecca Stene, owner of the local Tutor Doctor Franchise. “He is totally committed to working with children, and goes above and beyond the call of duty, which is evidenced 14 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

by the 55 hours per week that he tutors, but still manages to find time to attend some of his student’s extra curricula activities such as plays, baseball and other sports competitions.” I asked Alan how he approaches tutoring and what his teaching strategies were and he replied; “For SAT Prep I use a one minute test for math. I can develop just about any type of math test on the fly to check my student’s ability. My specialty is error analysis, so I take every test back and look for patterns. I don’t add to students’ abilities as much as I teach them to recognize their own knowledge and expand it. I promote confidence in one’s conceptual knowledge so that it could be applied to any problem. It is the whole “teach a man to fish” ideal. I also teach in a pragmatic way. Along with anecdotal lessons of do’s and don’ts from students over the past 15 years, I present all of my knowledge and methods to them and allow the students to choose the things that work best for them. Then I teach students to use that knowledge to the best of their developmental ability. If they get to the same result consistently, then it doesn’t matter if it is my favorite way or even the way I believe works best. I have spent my life learning many different ways to approach a similar result (I have always found that different paths to the same result are just as satisfying a journey), and it has come in handy. It is especially helpful with students who have learning difficulties because they don’t learn the same way I do. I use a synthesis of all the developmental approaches that I learned in college. Because of this, I can say with a good heart that I have given something to every student that I have ever tutored” says Alan. “We are all very excited about Alan Motter’s nomination and truly believe he is the best choice for Tutor Doctor’s “Tutor of the Year”! We are behind him 100% and hope he wins”, says Rebecca Stene. About Tutor Doctor of San Jose: Tutor Doctor was founded in 2000 as an alternative to the “one-to-many” teaching model most extra-curricular learning centers offer by providing a personalized one-on-one, in-home tutoring service to students. Tutor Doctor of San Jose is a local, Almaden based business and is the #1 ranked, one-onone, in-home tutoring company. We offer exceptional tutoring for all subjects and grades and customize programs for your child. All tutors are hand selected, based on each student’s personality and learning style. Are There Any Real Estate Bargains? Most of us become aware of changes in the market long after the actual change takes place. Remember, a few years ago, when we all were trying to figure out if we had hit the low price point in the real estate market? Buyers waited until they thought we hit absolute bottom before making an offer, hoping to get the home of their dreams for a little as possible. When everyone understood the bottom had been hit, the low point had passed at least a year before and prices had begun to climb. Conversly, sellers hold off, if they can, until they think the market is at its peak and hope to sell at top dollar. The reality is, if you sell for a lower price, your purchase will be at a lower price. Conversely, buying at a high price allows you to sell your current home at a high price. And remember, if you sell your home and buy another at the same price, your lower loan interest could save you considerable money. Buyer? Seller? The real estate market is healthy and well. Your needs for real estate are unique to you. Give me a call and let’s discus your needs.

Guess what they feed farm animals to make them as fat as possible?

C

ereal, low-fat milk and grain. Why? A diet of cereal grains, especially corn, with milk, rapidly raises blood sugar. Whole milk makes the animals feel full and then they won’t eat any more. Using low fat allows the animal to eat more because it takes them longer to feel full. Now think of what you’re eating for breakfast… If you go to a nutritionist and tell them you want to lose weight, they tell you to eat a breakfast of low-fat milk and corn, wheat or oat-based cereal. It’s a prescription to make you as fat as possible as fast as possible. Your blood sugar will skyrocket and you’ll never stop eating because you won’t get any food that causes satiation. Americans are told to eat a diet scientifically designed to make you as fat as possible. Without fat, you’d have no way of getting nutrients to your organs because your cells wouldn’t have membranes. Without fat, your brain would be the size of a frog’s, and nerve impulses wouldn’t get to your muscles. Fat is essential for life. Yet modern nutritionists and dieticians keep telling you not to eat fat. This may surprise you: Your daily requirement of carbs is zero. You don’t need carbs. Your body easily makes carbs from fat or protein. Industry took away many of the good fats we need – and said they were bad. As a substitute, they gave us man-made fats, hydrogenated oils and trans fats which turned out to be dangerous. The key to body fat reduction is NOT to deprive yourself of the fatty foods. The best part is that foods rich in fat and protein are the best tasting. You just need to make sure you eat the right kinds of fats in the right ratios.

Meat and eggs are your best sources. If possible, eat grass-fed beef. The flavor is great and it’s far better for you because it has the right kinds of fats. An ounce of grass fed beef has more omega three oils than salmon and about 7 grams of protein. Eggs are the perfect food. They are the “Gold Standard” by which we rate all other protein. This means that all of the amino acids are there in the ratios you need in one place. Eat eggs that come from free-range chickens. Stay away from man-made fats, or trans fats. Trans-fat is the result of hydrogenation. When a hydrogen molecule is added to vegetable oils, it turns them to fatty solids. These fatty solids replace animal fats. Your body doesn’t recognize them as food and they are not metabolized by the usual enzymes. They wind up being incorporated into your tissues and can cause major health issues later on. Other good sources of protein are wild-caught salmon and other cold-water fish. The following nuts and seeds have good fats and the most protein: Measured by 1/4th Cup: Almonds – 8 grams | Peanuts – 9 grams Cashews – 5 grams | Sunflower seeds – 6 grams | Pumpkin seeds – 8 grams Two more foods with healthy fats include kiwi fruit and avocados. Kiwi, also called Chinese gooseberries, have a ton of fiber, vitamin K and omega-3 fats. Avocados have an amino acid score nearly as high as eggs. They are packed with vitamins, choline and magnesium. They have very few carbs, and are loaded with heart-healthy fats. —Lindsay Barker, Owner, Mission:Fitness Boot Camps for Women

very parent has heard that complaint from his or her child at some time. For some kids, the complaint can be frequent, even daily. More than 25% of kids will complain of frequent or chronic stomachaches with no identifiable cause. This can be very concerning and perplexing for parents leading to multiple doctor visits, family stress and missed days of school for the kids and work for their parents, among other things. A recent study has suggested what probably many pediatricians have suspected for a long time: many children who have frequent or chronic stomachaches with no known cause may be exhibiting early signs of anxiety or depression. Vanderbilt University researchers followed more than 300 children who suffered from chronic stomachaches without an identifiable cause and 150 who did not, for about 10 years until they became young adults. They found that 50% of children who’d had chronic stomachaches as children had an anxiety disorder as adults, compared to 20% of those who did not have stomachaches as children. Additionally, about 40% of kids with stomachaches had depression as adults, compared with only 15% of those who did not have stomach aches. To some degree, anxiety is a normal part of childhood, and every child goes through phases of anxiety and fear. In fact, I like to call the years between four and six as the “the age of fear.” This is when the previously fearless child suddenly develops fear of the dark, fear of being alone in a room in the house, fear of scary movies, etc. This type of phase is temporary. And while it can be a nuisance, it is usually harmless. But children who suffer from an anxiety disorder experience fear, nervousness, and shyness, to a degree that it starts to get in the way of leading a normal child’s life as they start to avoid places and activities, particularly school. Many children with an anxiety disorder do not exhibit the typical symptoms you see in an adult who can often describe what it is they are anxious about. Rather, these children often have frequent, vague physical complaints: stomach pain, headaches or “fatigue” being the most common, that keep them out of school and other activities. There is an ongoing controversy over whether children are experiencing more anxiety now than in previous generations and whether physicians are diagnosing too many kids with mental illness. However, it is more likely that anxiety and depression in childhood has always existed. Yet now with increased awareness by the medical profession (due to studies such as the above mentioned) as well as the general public, these children are more frequently coming to our attention. Whereas before these kids may have been explained away as “nervous child” it is now becoming clearer that many are suffering from something more significant that could very well continue into adulthood. Certainly, no parent wants to think that his or her child could be suffering from mental illness but the fact is, it does happen. And while there are treatments, it is understandable that the options make many people uneasy. But the first step is to acknowledge that children can and do have these problems.

ith the holidays coming, we have a chance to spend time with loved ones and catch up with family. But as we return to our normal lives, we often worry about our aging relatives (parents, grandparents) we just visited. For instance, mom or dad might not be in the same health condition as the last visit, whether in a physical or mental capacity. Considering whether a loved one needs homecare can be mentally taxing and emotionally draining and should take a wide range of factors into account. While some of the following warning signs might be common sense, considering and weighing each one accordingly is an important step towards making a potentially difficult decision. Warning Signs: • A loved one poses a threat to their own well-being • A recent hospital discharge can make it difficult for a loved one to undertake his or her usual daily routine • Physical limitations in general can hinder daily activities • Loved ones of any age might be in need of homecare if they are undergoing rehabilitation • Memory lapses can impede daily functions & put loved ones in danger • If trouble preparing their own meals, homecare should be considered • If they cannot maintain their lifestyles independently • If a loved one cannot make it through the night unattended • Loved ones that overburden your personal schedule are most likely in need of full-time care • When you’ve exhausted your own caregiving efforts, it might be time to seek a professional caregiver Once you’ve taken these warning signs into consideration, the next step can be even more difficult. Approaching a loved one about the possibility of homecare is a touchy subject, one wrought with emotion that forces loved ones to confront their own age-related shortcomings. Remember to broach the subject with sensitivity and care. Your loved ones must feel that their opinions are being considered if their mental capabilities are up to the task. Next issue I will share advise to consider when discussing the option of homecare with your loved ones. In the meantime, if you have questions regarding your situation, feel free to call me. These topics may take some time and multiple conversations to come to a consensus. Consider setting up a family meeting to discuss your concerns, involving everyone that the decision might affect directly. Keep in mind at all times that the decision ultimately belongs to your loved one, and he or she should be a central part of every discussion. Family meetings should be supportive, and everyone who takes part must treat the loved one who needs assistance and his or her opinion with the utmost respect.

Local Church Programs Picture of Father Brendan of Holy Spirit while on a mission in Nicaragua and Holy Spirit parishioners delivering animals they purchased from fundraising to needy farmers.

The Season of Giving by Penny Fraley

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” -Winston Churchill

A

young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them farther in they will dies.” replied the old man. “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beaches and thousands of starfish all along it? You can’t possibly save them all; you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all!” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it in the sea. “It made a difference to that one.” As we approach the holidays, I reflect on how much my personal paradigm has changed. When I was a child, Christmas and Thanksgiving were all about the receiving: how many presents were under the tree? What would Santa bring? What kind of dessert would Grandma Lang make for Thanksgiving? As I matured, it transformed into more about the giving and, moreover, giving back the blessings that my family and I enjoy. For our local churches, the season offers the opportunity to give back to our community and make a difference.

Local Churches:

The Episcopal Church of Almaden is holding their annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive: turkeys are collected and cooked. The meat is saved to be used throughout the year in the church’s outreach to help feed the needy at the Montgomery Street Shelter. There is lots of room for community members to join their efforts! This one event 26 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

spreads the spirit of sharing and giving throughout the year. The Youth groups also collect coins for the “Starfish Project” which provides food and shelter for the poor. In addition, on December 22, they will have their annual Christmas Pageant as well as special services on Christmas Eve: 5pm for family service and 10:30pm formal choral service. (Sunday services 7:30am and 10:30am at 6581 Camden Ave) South Hills Community Church has an extremely active youth ministry that drives much of the outreach including a Monthly Food Closet (collecting food) and weekly homeless outreach in St James Park. This generous youth group is even passing up an annual ski trip to do homeless outreach in San Francisco in January. The church reaches out actively in both our local middle schools and has a special Christmas Eve service. (Sunday services 10am at 6601 Camden Ave) Venture Church focuses on missions in the month of November, both local and globally. The church does frequent outreach in St James Park. The church supports mobilization through individual church members initiative which will include an outreach to families of deployed soldiers this year. (Saturday evening services 5pm; Sunday services 9am and 11am at 16845 Hicks Rd). Almaden Neighborhood Church is a little church trying to make a big difference in our community. The church holds frequent community events including game nights and free concerts, and has weekly after school programs at Williams (Thur) and Graystone (Fri) Elementary Schools. The church is a Second Harvest Collection site and teens from their youth program

are planning a door-to-door campaign to support Second Harvest as well. Their Christmas pageant is December 14-15: “In a Galilee Far, Far Away.” Services are held every Sunday at 11am with a special candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 5pm featuring Christmas Carols and communion. Heading into January, they are asking for warm hats, gloves and socks for an annual outreach at the City Team Homeless Shelter in downtown San Jose. “The church was opened in 1955 in the middle of farms and orchards,” said Pastor Jordan Wong. “Things have completely changed now! We are surrounded by homes and enjoy and embrace cultural diversity!” (Sunday Services are at 11am at 19550 McKean Rd) Holy Spirit Church works closely with Sacred Heart on a wide variety of community outreach programs throughout the holidays including a very successful annual Blanket Drive! This very active church helps distribute food boxes the week prior to Thanksgiving and has their annual turkey drive where they collect, literally, truckloads of turkeys! On Thanksgiving Day, there is a morning mass and community breakfast. For the Christmas Season or Advent, one of their big efforts is an annual toy drive. Many of the parishioners help distribute the toys through Sacred Heart’s “Toy Box” as Santa’s Elves. They also have a tradition of adopting families through a giving tree: cards list the Christmas wishes of a family in need so that a church member may fulfill the request. On Christmas Eve, they hold a special Children’s Mass and Christmas Pageant at 4pm with additional Masses at 6pm, 9pm and 11pm. Christmas Day Mass is at 8am, 9:30am and 11:30am. Within their church members, several families are from Nicaragua and have inspired the church to sponsor a large mission trip to their native country as a way to give back. They work with the group, Amigos for Christ, which focuses on creating a sustainable recovery in areas affected by not only Hurricane Katrina, but also an active volcano. They have a wonderful program called “Alternative Gifting” where you can purchase pigs, cows, or chickens for a family in Nicaragua instead of another tie for Uncle Mark or bottle of perfume for Aunt Mary. Just a note on this program: the family who is given the animal, for example a pregnant pig, within a year will return a pregnant pig back to the program creating sustainability! (Saturday evening Mass at 5pm, Sundays at 8am, 9:30am, 11:30am and 6pm held at 1200 Redmond Road) Blossom Valley Bible Church is actively serving the Almaden Valley community and around the world this Holiday Season! Close to home, our youth department, (staffed heavily with Almaden Valley leaders like Nick Noble, Austin Noble, Tim Bowman, Karissa Cordova, Frank and Nancy Marino, and several more), are reaching out to serve the community through work projects, counsel and encouragement of area youth, and opportunities for students to find a safe and fun place to hang out! Many of our students also work weekly with our Kid’s Club program after school. Kid’s Club is an after school Bible club for area elementary students, providing snacks, games, music, and high energy Bible lessons! Of course, the highlight of our year is the annual Hume Lake Summer Camp trip! BVBC is also reaching out in love to those around us who are finding it increasingly difficult to put food on their tables this time of year. Our Thanksgiving Food Drive collects both perishable and non-perishable food donations weekly, distributing the groceries and gift cards to those in need. We also are actively involved this time of year with Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse... a global relief agency headed up by Franklin Graham (Billy Graham’s son). O.C.C. collected 9,039,060 Christmas gift shoe boxes from around the world, and delivered them to extremely needy children throughout the world. Our church is a South Bay collection and distribution site. Each shoe box contains gifts, toys, and other items to bring great joy to the child who receives it! For most of these children, the gift they receive from O.C.C. is the ONLY gift they will receive all year!! Blossom Valley Bible Church is a non-denominational church. Pastor Tim Bowman is a 35 year Almaden Valley resident. Our Sunday service is at 9:30am. Throughout the week we offer Bible classes for men, women, couples and youth. (Our youth department students come from various communities... but the majority of our youth reside in 95120!) Our beautiful valley is blessed with a wonderful variety of churches supporting our community through their efforts. Above are just a select few. Each offers the opportunity to join in and give back. May the blessings of this holiday season grace your home!
