I

just celebrated my 5-year stage 3 cancer free anniversary. I couldn’t be more pleased, but also know cancer is a terrible disease which disrupts lives and even takes them far too often. October is awareness month. My personal survival philosophy is to exercise daily, surround yourself with positive people, stay positive yourself (never give up), and do activities or experiences that make you happy. With that in mind, I recently caught the travel bug. I experienced several voyages this year, as I pledged to travel once a Editor Photo by Nina Derksen month or at least every other month when possible. I had the pleasure over the summer to visit a remote Caribbean island named Carriacou which is in the Grenadines, near Barbados. I was invited by the owners of a luxurious villa named La Pagerie via LinkedIn. I am not exactly the National Geographic and in fact had to research the location of this tiny, remote island, but I am usually up for an adventure and enjoy traveling, so I accepted the assignment. (I had a similar assignment in Zihuatanejo years ago and loved it.) I was delighted with the people, the sites, the food, the villa, its caretakers, and the experience which was both amazing and educational. You may be thinking that is a strange way to describe a trip, but I learned many new things in Carriacou, such as driving on the left side of the road and scuba diving. The latter I was even lucky enough to run across some biologists who created a charity with the intent to raise awareness and minimize the detrimental damage humans are creating among their reefs. I also cover that story this issue with some words from their local scientists. I must have taken hundreds of photos so it was difficult to narrow down which to use in my story, but I hope you enjoy viewing the photos included, and reading about our stay at La Pagerie Villa. Thus far I have only met one American that has been to Carriacou before us.

Rev. Derek Engfelt at the finish line of the California Coast Classic, raising money to find a cure for arthritis.

Cycling

For A Cause Almaden Style I

first saw the advertisement listed in a cycling e-mail I receive on a regular basis: “Cycle down the beautiful California Coast…” It piqued my interest. Cycling is my sport of choice, and riding down our State’s breathtaking coastline has been on my Bucket List, well, since before there was a thing called a Bucket List! Having received the necessary approval and support from my better half, I quickly signed up and was off and, uh… cycling! The primary cause of the ride was initially of secondary importance to me. Few in my family had suffered from Arthritis. I did have a dear cycling friend who so afflicted – but he rode anyway. Later diagnosed with cancer, which wreaked its devastating work too quickly, he died last year, at the too-young age of 71. I knew little about Arthritis. But I would soon come to learn more. Interesting and surprising things. Such as: Kids get it, too. Really? Yes, really. In fact, I came to learn that there are more young people diagnosed with Arthritis than those diagnosed with diabetes, cystic

06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy – put together! Beyond this, I would meet the faces behind the diagnoses. I’ve since been touched by their stories, and I’ve been deeply moved by their attitude, fortitude and gratitude – for the many opportunities their challenges present to them. Amazing, indeed… The adventure called the California Coast Classic is a 525-mile journey down the coastline of CA, riding Highway 1 most of the way (except for a jaunt inland from Pismo Beach to Buellton, through Santa Maria & Solvang). It begins in San Francisco and ends 7 days later in Santa Monica (Los Angeles). Each rider is required to raise a minimum of $3,000, and it is the most successful fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation nationally. There were 186 riders this year; together, we raised more than $950,000. I was the 4th top fundraiser this year, and I’m humbled and grateful for the more than 200 people who partnered with me to contribute more

than $16,000 to such a great cause. 100% of the money raised went to the aid of those with Arthritis. All food, camping accommodations, ride support, etc. was covered by generous donations from major corporations, including Amgen & Safeway. Last year a member of my congregation (I’m a Lutheran pastor at Immanuel in Saratoga) told me that some good friends of hers were also participating in the ride. It was soon after this that I met Dwight & Maria Powery, who’ve participated together in the ride for several years running. They have a much greater reason to ride than I: Their younger daughter Christiana, diagnosed at age seven with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Juvenile Dermatomyositis, died in 2005 at the age of ten. Having experienced such a devastating loss in their own lives, they’ve committed themselves to doing all that they can to make things easier for others facing similar challenges. You could not meet two nicer, godlier people than this couple. (You can read more about Dwight & Maria and their story at http://www.alsotouch.com/) Dwight & Maria are also Almaden residents, as is a good friend of

mine, Steve Roberson, who I also “roped into” riding with me this year. Steve wrote to me after this year’s ride was all said and done, “This was the most wonderful and emotionally fulfilling thing I have ever done. Truly… I have never been touched by so many and so directly.” I’d call that a pretty solid endorsement. So there you have it: Four Almadeneans were greatly blessed this summer, as they joined with cycling enthusiasts of like mind, pedaled for one great cause, sensed the unmistakable presence of the One who created such magnificent beauty, and rejoiced at the gifts of life, strength, balance, and friendship. Would I do it again? You bectcha! I wonder who I could get to go with me next time… Interested? Rev. Derek Engfelt, a pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saratoga, has been an Almaden resident since 2001. Together with his wife, Nola, they have seven (yours, mine and ours) children. Their three teens attend Leland, and their second-grader, Ryan, is at Graystone. For more information about Arthritis, go to http://www.arthritis.org/

SELLER’S BONANZA

Our real estate market is moving along at a healthy rate. Homes in all areas and price ranges that are priced correctly are selling quickly. Inventory is climbing except in a few neighborhoods. Almaden is one of those low inventory zip codes. At the time of this writing, there are 27 homes for sale. This is about ½ of what it should be for this time of year. Nobody has an explanation as to why. This situation makes Almaden a seller’s bonanza! We enjoy the attraction of great schools. And since most home buyers shop for school scores first and then look for the appropriate home for their family, homes that get listed in this area are snatched up very quickly. Great Schools + Low Inventory = Sellers Bonanza! That being said, putting a home on the market still requires it be presented well, advertised to impress and priced and placed properly. My team of experts will prepare your home to get its maximum price. I can show you why my listings get the price they do and how we can do this for you. If you would like my “Selling Your Home Tips” sheet, just ask. Let’s discuss your particular situation and let me show what I can do for you.

From Editor: I have been well aware of this global issue of reef destruction. It was refreshing to meet a small group of islanders creating a new charity as well as spending their own money to make a difference. If you would like to donate or help fundraise, please contact them, as I believe this to be a necessary and noble cause.

Main Photo: Carriacou locals. (Author is in blue shirt) and another reef buddy in yellow. Below: Queen Triggerfish, Alex Ward (Reef Buddy Director) teaching a discover scuba course, then a destroyed reef (by illegal fishing practices) followed by a healthy reef.

Carriacou and a Reef in Need

A letter from: MATT RIDEOUT, BSc (Hons) Marine Biology, Exec. Director, CARIBBEAN REEF BUDDY

T

he wealth of living creatures in the Caribbean make it a tropical paradise, though few will ever know about the conservation concerns that come along with it. The Island of Carriacou lies in the Lesser Antilles, nestled within the West Indies, off the coast of Venezuela and just below Barbados. Carriacou was called ‘Kayryouacou’, meaning “the land of reefs” in Carib, because of the multitude of coral reefs and abundance of marine life which still surrounds the island today. A hotspot for diving, Carriacou boasts an overwhelming number and variety of spectacular fishes, nurse sharks, rays, lobsters and even the occasional pod of dolphins and Humpback whales. The incredible wildlife under the sea attracts visitors and fishers alike, and the island is a target area for the harvest of fish for consumption and exportation. When controlled and regulated, fishing can be sustained by the marine ecosystem. However, such regulations do not exists in Carriacou, and the effects of overfishing have resulted in the decline in health of the ecosystem. Catching too many fish leads to the overall degradation of that system. Here, certain delicacies like lobster have a specific season during which it is sustainable to take them. Outside of that season, harvesting them is illegal. Though they would benefit from a similar system, other marine species are harvested legally in unregulated numbers. Large and slow-growing fish are often targeted first, as they are more valuable, but they are often key to a functioning system, and their removal is causing serious damage. Parrot fish are a good example, as they feed on and control algae. In areas where parrotfish are taken, algae have overgrown and killed large areas of the coral underneath it. Other impacts include development of hotels, marinas; heavy metal pollutants from yachts and commercial traffic; and climate change. These effects have been studied in other areas of the Caribbean where the reefs have died. Specific negative impacts in Carriacou are unknown, as there have been no studies to find out what marine life and how much of it currently exist (biodiversity and abundance). Grenada has made efforts towards conservation of Carriacou’s coast by creating the Sandy Island Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area (SIOBMPA), which comprises an area of ~1944 acres along the coast of Carriacou. A marine protected area, or MPA is a protected area in which human activities such as fishing and development have been limited to protect the environment. Overfishing is still an issue in Carriacou, despite the MPA, as only three rangers enforce its few fishing-related regulations. So you may be asking why is this important to me? I did not think it was, until I visited the island. I experienced the breath taking

beauty of the coral reef, and saw the alarming level of damage already inflicted. I have seen the same pattern, cause and effect, in my travels, where support for the reefs came too little too late. So, sitting around one May evening, enjoying the Caribbean sunset, a small group created Caribbean Reef Buddy, an NGO dedicated to marine and coral reef conservation. We work to integrate and educate the local community, and have developed programs that identify monitoring and restoration projects. In addition, our international volunteer program will start in June 2015, where we will offer professional dive training in partnership with Deefer Diving Carriacou that will support local businesses while acting to conserve reefs. So I would argue that we have a collective responsibility to help preserve these coral reefs. Economic growth and development are important for the island; we are not eco-warriors but realists; but development must be undertaken whilst considering the impact on marine and coral reef ecosystems. Measures can be imposed to limit their impacts. Working with the local community and the SIOBMPA Committee, we are dedicated to providing much needed data and initiatives to help ensure the coral reefs around Carriacou do not die. There are many deserving causes in the World today. I sincerely hope having read this short article, you now believe us to be one of them. Caribbean Reef Buddy would very much welcome your support.Contributions can be made directly online at www.caribbeanreefbuddy.org (or for other arrangements or to fundraise contact Chrissy from the magazine in case our website is not completed). Who knows, one day you may decide to take a trip here, and as Chrissy Derksen, Executive Editor & Founder did, you will be warmly welcomed with a smile and a rum punch.

YELP YOU!

Experienced Care- Close to Home!

A

great review on Yelp can sometimes help a business out, and a bad review can sometimes cause serious damage. While those anonymous postings are sometimes providing you with valuable feedback, it’s probably no surprise that businesses would like to limit the negative reviews. Businesses are fighting in the courts about two ‘negative review’ types: reviews from actual customers, and from competitors posing as customers.

Customer Reviews:

Trying to limit negative customer reviews, some businesses have gone as far as to create a “non-disparagement” contract clause that prevents customers from posting anything negative. Typically, the business hides this provision within their website’s terms of use or within other fine print, and customers are not even aware that they’ve agreed to it. Last month, California passed a law that bans businesses from placing customers into contracts where they waive the right to comment on services they receive, unless the agreement is openly negotiated and the customer has knowingly and voluntarily waived his or her right to do so. It also bars businesses from penalizing customers for such statements. Fines are significant, and can be as much as $15,000 per violation. California lawmakers approached this problem from a First Amendment free-speech right, deciding that the customer’s right to speak freely overrode a business’ right to contract. Piggybacking on the idea of this legislation, federal lawmakers have now introduced a bill that would give the Federal Trade Commission the power to fine a business up to $16,000 a day if that business files a lawsuit against a consumer who gave them a bad review. Just to be clear, this should not be seen as an opportunity for a Yelper to misrepresent facts about a business. The business would still retain a right to sue for defamation.

Competitors:

While leaving negative reviews when you are not a real customer is a violation of the Yelp terms of service, businesses often have difficulty proving those accounts are false, particularly if the Yelper is anonymous. A recent case in Virginia involves a company that claimed multiple negative reviews were not from their customers. Yelp refused to turn over the names of the anonymous reviewers, so the business took the matter to court. The Virginia Court of Appeals agreed the business should be allowed this information in order to show the statements were false. The court reasoned that if the reviewer was never a customer, the review is not an opinion-it was just a false statement. In this case, it found that where there was a “legitimate, good faith” belief the law had been violated, those anonymous sources could be unmasked. Again, the Court is in a position of trying to balance rights of free speech and privacy against the rights of individuals not to be defamed. Virginia Supreme Court next?

Crafting

What is Yelp’s liability?

With all of these potentially defamatory statements being posted, you might question whether Yelp has liability in this matter. In a nutshell, they do not. Among other laws, Yelp is protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act which grants online services immunity from legal liability relating to the content posted by others, including defamation, privacy and negligence claims. The quest for reliable reviews goes on, and we can expect to see Yelp continue as a major player, but what you can post and whether you can do so anonymously remain undecided as the law continues to try to catch up with technology. Presenting

La Pagerie Villa Carriacou Island

I

received a polite invitation from Paulus von Kunersdorf and his wife to stay at their nouveau La Pagerie Villa on Carriacou (the land of reefs) Island in the Grenadines this summer as they had recently completed a 3-year build for this French colonial style indoor-outdoor living villa. Of course I accepted, invited a couple adventurous friends and headed out. We flew to Grenada (via New York) to get to Carriacou. I had visited Grenada in the past while on a cruise, and recalled it was colorful, busy, crowded and known as the spice island. We had toured the island and driven to a crater-formed lake and I thought it was a small island, so when I researched Carriacou and discovered it was much smaller and harder to reach (as there is not direct air access and definitely no cruise ship visits) with very little development, I started thinking of the old show Gilligan’s Island, and the beauty of the island wasn’t too far off. Carriacou is governed by Grenada to the south and part of a 68-mile archipelago that houses Kick ‘em Jenny, the only active (last eruption was in 2001) submarine volcano on the Caribbean Sea floor, which makes for interesting diving. Carriacou boasts pristine, uncrowded beaches, wonderful weather and perfectly warm water, so I was eager to experience this exotic land 16 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

with the luxurious La Pagerie Villa. I was captivated by this spacious and charming villa sitting amongst a backdrop of tropical foliage and flowers including my favorite Bougainvillea and built directly on a private stretch of turquoise blue Caribbean beach. The recently built villa’s luxury craftsmanship was more than I expected in such a remote location, as the island is truly likened to being in Hawaii before the tourism bug. It is the perfect location for couples or families to ‘get away from it all’ as you almost have the island to yourself when you visit, and the locals are extremely accommodating and friendly. In fact, La Pagerie Villa also includes the service of a concierge Wendy who manages customer service and she lives down the road. She was able to shop for us and have groceries and libations waiting in our large, full-amenity kitchen. The 5-bedroom villa is perfectly suited for 5 to 10 people, with three master suites and two large bedrooms with multiple beds. All beds were accommodated with mosquito nets, and we doubled our protection by burning coals (a trick the locals informed us of). Along with the Caribbean tropical climate, Carriacou has rain season July through January which provides their only source of fresh water. The week we were there, we had

a few short but powerful downpours, and one violent and moody lightning storm which blew water through the shutters into my room, adding an air of exhilarating excitement to the evening, and cooling down the weather, but the storm came and left very quickly. I would imagine this raw energy would be very romantic for couples. The other evenings the weather was perfect and we closed each evening in the edgeless pool looking at the stars and discussing the day’s activities and the characters we met. Upon island arrival, for transportation, one has several options. Wendy can take you to the police department to purchase a temporary driver’s license (and I would only suggest this if you are accustomed to driving in the left-hand lane and don’t mind slim and in some cases dirt roads). You can also take a public cab, boat or bus, or you can rent a car at Wayne’s Garage, and have him supply a driver. Did I mention Wayne’s also has a bar, which we found comical for a car rental company? I acquired a Carriacou driver’s license and drove the first day as I just had to try it, but quickly deferred to let someone else drive from there on and we chose Ziggy who originally delivered our rental car. We enjoyed the company of our driver (yes named after Ziggy Marley) as he added a local perspective, knew his way around (so we could just sightsee and not stress), and was able to recommend great tiny restaurants to eat at various times as some close at odd hours. A great ‘Ziggy moment’ happened at the white sand and festive Paradise Beach. Diving into the water, he pulls up large Conch shells and throws them to a child who took them to another young man who proceeded to barbeque this freshly caught lambi right on the beach, and we enjoyed tasting lambi for the first time. The Carriacou beaches (Tyrell Bay, Sandy Island, Anse la Roche, Paradise Beach, White Island, Petite Carenage, Hillsborough) were true to form. Each having their own unique attractions, be it no buildings whatsoever or the best snorkeling, or the best bar or restaurant… Taking a boat ride to be dropped of at Sandy Island to snorkel for hours was breathtaking. Peeking at lobsters and exotic fish all afternoon with no one else on the small white sand island decorated with palm trees. I thought the afternoon couldn’t be topped in fact, until another afternoon we went scuba diving (another first for me) with Deefer Diving and combed a perfect coral reef loaded with colorful tropical fish of all sizes and shapes, spotted eels, and even gas bubbles from Kick ‘em Jenny. I felt like I was swimming inside an aquarium. The diving instructors knew just how to make an anxious beginner feel comfortable. The island food was fantastic and we quickly felt the allure to revisit several establishments, as well as crave some local fare. We made friends with the ladies at Wayne’s and stopped by almost daily. The jerk goat and jerk chicken from Laurena II was tantalizing. We also enjoyed the ambiance, French cuisine and owner at Moringa. The Slipaway was terribly cute and what you would expect to see on a tropical island, and then there was the colorful Off the Hook, and the owner Curtis was kind enough to provide us a boat taxi to snorkel at Sandy Beach. (I dare you to try his homemade rum however, with many ingredients inside, including a giant centipede.) We enjoyed every person and establishment we encountered on the island. If you plan to visit Carriacou, give the La Pagerie Villa owners a call to book

What is Chronic Kidney Disease? What is Chronic Kidney Disease? Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) includes conditions that damage kidneys and prevents elimination of excess body fluid, removal of waste and toxins. This further leads to conditions such as high blood pressure, weak bones, anemia, nerve damage, and poor nutrition. There are 26 million American adults who have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk. What causes CKD? Two main causes of CKD are Diabetes and high blood pressure. Both of these account for 2/3 of the cases. Third most common cause is Glomerulonephritis diseases (such as Lupus glomerulonephritis, IgA Nephropathy), a group of diseases that cause inflammation and damage to kidney’s filtering system. Other causes include inherited diseases such as polycystic kidney disease; obstructive uropathy such as kidney stones; and recurrent urinary tract infections. How can we prevent CKD? Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure where patients either go on dialysis or need kidney transplant. What is Kidney Failure or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)? It is advanced kidney disease when kidneys stop working (only 15% of function is left) and people cannot live without dialysis or kidney transplant. What is the difference between dialysis and kidney transplant? Dialysis is a process where a machine filters waste and water from your body whereas transplant is a surgical procedure where another person’s healthy kidney is placed in your body. In the United States about 400,000 people undergo dialysis every year and approximately 16,000 people receive a kidney transplant. How I can get more information or get evaluated? You can go to our website at www.auhealthcare.org or make an appointment at (408) 604-0014 to see a specialist.

their lovely villa and find out the best time to attend to suit your preferences in regards to weather and activities. For instance, in 1763 France gifted Carriacou to Great Britain, so as a result Scottish and Irish men taught the locals the art of making boats that can withstand the reefs. This boat making became a livelihood and such a big tradition that an annual race The Carriacou Sailing Regatta started in the late 60’s and has become very popular, and even includes a yacht race. Another attraction is the Maroon (Music) Festival in March-April. It is a journey to reach Carriacou Island as one has to travel through a major airport such as New York, Miami or New Orleans prior to flying to Grenada. Make sure to get a flight booked that has your flight arrival to Grenada early enough to catch the Osprey (a scenic 2-hour boat ride) or flight (only 20 minutes) to Carriacou from Grenada as they are limited – even the chartered flights. We stayed in Grenada the first night in a gorgeous hotel, and had a leisurely flight out the next day, but be sure to plan your island hopping transportation at the same time as your regular flight. I have been on a couple Caribbean cruises and I love the Caribbean. As for Carriacou, it is so untainted and non-commercialized that it truly is a unique experience and you will not find a paparazzi. It is the perfect place to experience privacy on a tropical island, and actually embrace the culture, experience the beautiful white sand beaches (which you may have to yourself), while you luxuriate in the warm aqua waters and enjoy the ‘under the sea’ nature.

Those who matter are beginning to listen “When families place a loved one in an assisted living facility, there’s an expectation that if something goes wrong, there will be consequences. Mistakes will be addressed. Crimes will be prosecuted. But that’s not always the case in practice. Recent reports in the media detailed stories of abuse so dramatic, they inspired a round of legislative reform in Sacramento not seen in 30 years.” * See more at: www.californiareport.org/archive/R20140811085 What families expect when they place someone they love at a care facility is that they will be taken care of regardless of what specific medical situation brought them there. The facility or agency or organization is implying the choice was a good one. A safe and sound decision towards assuring the recovery of the patient or client within a given period of time. What most people are missing is this assurance isn’t guaranteed. And according to the report quoted at the outset of this article and reports coming out all over California in the last few years... and nationwide for that matter, that assurance is beginning to be questionable. Many individuals are being seriously disappointed in having their expectations regarding services, being met when having their family member taken to skilled nursing facilities. This problem isn’t only found in medical facilities but across the broad range of service agencies targeting our aging community. The article specifically targets Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) in the San Diego area, and throughout California, and what legislation is being initiated to increase the financial consequences for such negligent actions whereby the worst case is the resulting death of a resident/patient. I have heard stories of such negligence and am saddened by the helplessness families feel in not being able to do anything. The only possible relief is that when families place a loved one in an assisted living facility, there’s an expectation that if something goes wrong, there will be consequences. As mentioned earlier, we assume mistakes will be addressed and crimes investigated. There’s only so much we can do to make sure we have made the best choice. It’s not like you have a site you can go to and find out the overall quality of the facility you’re looking at, at least not at the moment. That’s a future possibility if the legislature moves appropriately. A series of articles published last fall by San Diego Union Tribune/Center for Health Reporting. “Deadly Neglect,” as the series was called, detailed 27 deaths in assisted living in San Diego County — deaths caused by neglect and abuse. Indeed. The reports were so dramatic, they inspired a round of legislative reform in Sacramento not seen in 30 years. [UPDATE: The governor has signed two bills into law. Another 10 are still pending.] The best you can do is be diligent and express your expectations. Ask at the outset: “What is the policy in addressing any problems?” And should your expectation not be met, you can always speak up, more people are listening. * The California Report | Mon, August 11, 2014 -8:50AM, San Diego Union Tribune “ Deadly Neglect” a series of articles published last fall 2013
