95120MAGAZINE

95120editor he little tykes dressed as witches, goblins and the latest celebrity will be out haunting the Almaden neighborhoods soon. The adults have plenty of fun and celebration coming around the corner as well. For instance, don’t forget the charity events, such as the Broomstick Ball, ad on page 28 and the Wonderful Witchy Women luncheon in the Save the Date calendar when considering your October haunts. Have fun while helping those much less fortunate. Also listed in the calendar are local fundraisers at Leland High School and an October San Jose Assistance League youth book drive. I would like to welcome our newest advertisers. Linda from Elegant Nails has a special offer for you on page 25 and I can attest they did an adorable job on my nails. We would also like to introduce Residential Window Tinting who included a special savings in their ad on page 28 when you reference their ad, and besides adding privacy even when the curtains are open, their product makes a difference with your PG&E bill as well. Also, Sonia, ad on page 10 has re-launched her house cleaning service, so she has openings in her schedule and she is amazingly meticulous and trustworthy. I highly recommend her if you are searching for someone to keep your home extremely clean, despite the busy life we lead. Her cheery spirit and hard work have made a positive impact on our household. GOT TALENT IN THE FAMILY? Check out Connect Studios (page 6) to refine that talent, and learn how to audition properly to make it work for you and don’t miss the wonderful facial and skincare specials offered by the renowned office of Dr. R. Laurence Berkowitz MD. In loving memory of our dear friend, Lee Anne Montrose Finally, it is with a saddened heart that I say goodbye to my friend Lee Ann who was a loving wife and mother. She fought a courageous battle with Breast Cancer, and helped me understand when I was going through treatment. Her daughter Michelle, who has the most vibrant and amazing personality, put in words exactly how she felt about her wonderful Mother. Well said Michelle and I am sure your Mom is proud. I wish you and your family strength through this time of healing.

Editor’s Photos: The amazing wardrobe and accessories worn in the editor photo are available at The Studio by Angi (ad on page 10) and the makeup and hair was done by The Studio’s specialist Lisa Pardo. The photo was taken at the downtown studio of Charlene Chavez Photography — (408) 859-6267 and see her ad on page 26.

Class Series: Vocal Series: Sundays: 3:30pm-5pm In this six-week vocal workshop, students will bring in songs they would like to perfect both technically and in delivery. From their songs, ranging from pop to rock, jazz to musical theatre, they will participate in each other’s “before and after” vocal process. Monologues: End your procrastination with this 6-week series. Get used to putting your monologues on their feet during class exercises so that, by the time those big auditions roll around, you can breathe easy and be completely In The Moment. Dance: Come dance with Kelly! In this class we will be stressing strong technique throughout. We will begin with a warm-up, move into center work, go through across the floors, and then end with a new combination every week. These combinations will deal with a different emotion each week to work and stretch these young adults to show emotion through movement and facial expression.

Lee Ann Montrose

In Loving Memory O

n October 4, 2012 I am upset (to say the least) we lost the amazing Lee Ann Montrose, my beautiful mother. She lived her life with such passion and a vigorous thirst for what life had to give. She took such pride in her glorious and beautiful garden, creative sewing, various carvings, delicious cooking, and especially in her loving family. Everyone she came into contact with recognized and appreciated her pixy-like loving personality. She gave me more than enough love for a lifetime and enough memories to stay with me forever. She was more than just a mother to me, she was my best friend, a sister, a nurse, a shoulder to cry on, and she was my everything. She 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

was capable of having a person look into her and find not only love for her, but she made people genuinely love themselves. Now that is what I call a gift. She had the most loving beautiful blue eyes and soft gentle skin like an angel. Now she is literally my guardian angel watching over me right now. She will be greatly missed. I love you forever and always; may you rest in paradise Lee Ann Montrose.

Love from your daughter, Michelle Montrose

95120 Magazine is a proud member of the Almaden Business Association (ABA) and Editor Chrissy Derksen is also a Board Member. 95120 Magazine offers ALL chamber and ABA members a discounted group advertising rate. This is renewal month so please call us to find out your special savings opportunity for ABA, and of course, other business group rates such as shopping centers, are also available. Besides getting a group rate, each ABA advertiser is able to include an article in one issue of the magazine during the annual term, on the ABA spread in this column, above our ABA event “Save the Date” below. The ABA is a San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) subset. The Chamber represents its business members collectively and keeps all informed of pertinent political climates and issues, and also holds training seminars and key note speaker events. The ABA holds business information and networking events every other month in the Almaden area, and is currently going to launch a Leland High School scholarship collection effort at these ABA events. Support this magazine, while advertising your business and establishing brand recognition. The non-ABA member ad pricing is as low as $900/year for a small business ad. By advertising, you support the local charity events included in each issue. How else can a charity reach 9,000 homes to ask the public for support? There are many people in our community going the extra mile to help others who are suffering or to help provide opportunity to the next generation. The compassion runs high and the work behind some of the events and fundraisers is extraordinary. Speaking of events, 95120 Magazine will help promote our advertisers’ events at no charge through our 95120 Nights. Attend our events to socialize and network and learn more about local business owners and how you can promote your school, charity and other events in the 95120 Magazine. Also, remember to join our website at www.95120magazine.com (at no charge) where you are able to post your events for anyone in the community to view, from a garage sale, to a fundraiser, to a PTA meeting, to a candidate forum. You can also post commentary via blogs, and also ask questions on the online forum. You can also create a group, and act as an administrator, and either make the group private or public. Have fun and get creative as the site is there for our community.

The Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival is a great place to connect with friends and family in the community. It was wonderful to see all the friendly faces and meet more people. There was something for every generation to enjoy. Many of our advertisers participated as well. Is “As Is” for You? As the year approaches its end, the real estate market usually slows down. Typically people don’t wish to move during the Thanksgiving-Christmas season. However, 2012 may be different. With interest rates extremely low, home prices climbing and very little home inventory available, people are continuing to shop aggressively into the fall for their next home. I just listed and sold the home pictured above “As-Is” in the Rose Garden area in nine days over asking price. Selling a home “As-Is” gives both the seller and buyer some distinct advantages that can often make a sale happen in a hot market. Negotiating such a sale can be tricky and may not be for you, but we can discuss this tactic should it be appropriate. Give me a call and let’s discuss your situation.

an preschoolers give back to the community? Yes, they can with the help of their moms! Local mom’s group, MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), found a way to have their kids give back. The MOPS from South Hills Community Church had their young children draw pictures and color thank you cards for men and women in the service. The families collected their Halloween candy to donate through Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude, www.operationgratitude.com, annually sends 100,000 care packages filled with snacks, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation addressed to U.S. Service Members deployed in hostile regions, to their children left behind and to Wounded Warriors, Veterans and First Responders. Their mission is to lift morale, bring a smile to a service member’s face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American people. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 815,000 packages to American Military members. The candy is used in place of packing peanuts for troops to personally enjoy or to pass out to others they are helping. One of the goals of MOPS is to bring moms together allowing women to build a community. A MOPS group allows mom to meet and build friendships with other moms in her local community. The service project was fun way to have South Hills moms give back to their community. As moms of young kids know it is easy to get caught up in loads of laundry and dishes. We often forget the global community when our days 18 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

are filled serving our families or in our local elementary schools. We forget how important it is to teach our little ones to think of others and be grateful for those who help secure our freedoms. These moms are showing that even three year olds can help out in a global way and learn about gratitude. Jenny Impellezzeri, mom of three children, ages 2, 4 and 5 said “I want to teach my kids about serving others, but the idea of taking them to the food bank seemed overwhelming. This was easy and fun. My sons love to draw and we don’t need all that Halloween candy anyway. This was something they could do and I’m so glad we could bring some joy to our troops.” Last year the group collected over sixty pounds of candy and close to thirty handwritten notes and many pictures from their children. This year they hope to bring in even more candy and notes! If you want to help South Hills Community church MOPS this year they will be collecting candy after Halloween. Pictures and notes from kids and adults will be especially appreciated by the troops. They are also taking monetary donations to help cover the cost of shipping all that candy. To donate candy or money please contact Jenny at (408) 445-0545. For more information on South Hills Community Church please visit www.southhills.cc. MOPS at South Hills meets on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month at 9:30am to share breakfast, receive encouragement, laugh together and build community. Please join us!

I was scared because I knew he would be going to war no matter what. He told me he joined because he wanted to make a difference in this world. How does a mother argue with that? He went to boot camp at Fort Benning in Georgia and immediately into Airborne School, Sniper school, and Ranger School. He is now an Army Ranger with the 75th Regiment, 2nd Ranger Battalion out of Fort Lewis in Washington. I couldn’t be more proud of my son and admire his commitment to this country and to our freedom. Would like to thank all who attended “Black & White ‘Til Midnight Ball”!

S

eptember 15th, Burnham Construction in association with Events by Jess hosted the inaugural “Black & White ‘Til Midnight Ball” event benefitting the Northern California Scleroderma Foundation. The lavishly decorated Los Gatos Lodge event included popular desserts, music and dancing. Approximately 200 people attended wearing their best black & white attire! With two photo areas, a dessert room, two fabulous bands, Johnny Neri, F3 and DJ Jordan “there were three rooms of entertainment to choose from” said the hosts of the event and owners of Burnham Construction, Dan and Mia Burnham. The entire Burnham family worked at the event. People danced, ate delicious desserts and laughter was heard throughout the venue as the celebration continued ‘til midnight’. We raised money to give to the Scleroderma Foundation. Dan and Mia Burnham have a neighbor who was recently diagnosed with scleroderma and became advocates of the illness. “We helped our neighbor Jane Johnson with the “Steppin’ out to cure Scleroderma” event which was held at Almaden Lake Park over the summer but we felt that we could do more to raise awareness for the illness”. We worked with Jayme Kornfeld, the President of the Scleroderma Foundation Northern California Chapter, and Jessica Garcia with “Events by Jess” to assist in the event planning. “We feel the event was a huge success and look forward to next year,” added Dan and Mia Burnham. Please visit www.burnham-construction.com to see all the event photos and feel free to contact Mia Burnham at (408) 839-6071 or email mia@burnham-construction.com for more information regarding donations or questions about next year’s event.

ne day, several years ago, I was talking on the phone to a friend when I suddenly asked to excuse myself for a quick moment. When I returned to the phone I explained that my then 18 month old son had been napping longer than usual and I wanted to make sure he was still breathing. She gasped with pleasure exclaiming, “you do that too?” Certainly, I know, as a pediatrician, that 18 month old children don’t just stop breathing, but I still had to check. All of us parents have concerns about our children’s health and safety, some rational and some not. What we need to understand is that what we perceive to be a threat to our children and what the true threats toCOLLECTION their health andSITES safety really are, are not always the same.

Stock Options… how they work

L

iving in Silicon Valley, just about everyone has heard of stock options, but what are they, why do you get them, and how do they work? A stock option is a right (but not an obligation) to purchase stock of a company at some date in the future. The idea is that you are granted these rights at an initial price (typically, fair market value on the date of grant) that is lower than the share price on the date you exercise the option and sell the shares, i.e. when you cash them in. The money you make is on this spread between the grant price and the current price. Companies view stock options as another form of currency. Instead of paying employees more money, they may grant stock options in order to attract, retain and motivate their team. If the company is successful, such as going public or getting acquired, you can potentially make more money than you could ever make just drawing a paycheck; but, of course, you take the risk of less pay now in hopes of that greater payoff later. Stock options have a number of variables, which are typically spelled out in the company’s stock option plan: • the type of option – most employees receive incentive stock options (“ISOs), but there are also “non-qualified stock options” which are available if the grant does not meet the ISO requirements. ISOs are more favorable from a tax perspective, as no tax is due when you exercise them...only when you sell the shares (but it’s not unusual to exercise and sell on the same day). • the number of shares you are permitted to buy – not much mystery here... the more valuable the employee is to the company, the greater the number of shares. • the grant price – ISOs must be granted at fair market value. Non-qualified stock options can be granted at any price. • the vesting terms – vesting means that your right to buy the shares is earned over time (typically three or four years) or based on a performance milestone. If you leave before you vest, you will lose some or all of your rights granted in the option. • the expiration date – nothing lasts forever! At some point in your option’s life, you’ll need to use it or lose it. Sounds good, so far...so how can this go wrong? If the company doesn’t do well, causing the fair market price of the company to drop below the grant price, the option is “under water” and not worth anything. While the company can always re-price those options, there is no guarantee they will do so. Even if the fair market price ultimately exceeds the grant price, you still need to sell shares to get the money – if the company remains private and is never acquired, the value of the stock is less predictable. It’s also important to note that until you exercise your options, you are not a shareholder, so you have no rights to vote or receive any dividends. If you decide, instead, to exercise the options and hold the shares, you are again making a risk/ reward bet. If you exercise and then hold the stock long enough, you can qualify for capital gains treatment and thus pay less tax when you sell, but if you cannot sell, you’ve paid money for stock that may have limited liquidity and you may never see your money again. Options can be a great opportunity, but you need to know what you own so that you can make the most of them! The above article is provided for informational purposes only.
