ummer and barbeque season is upon us and what better way is there than to start it by improving your barbequing skills while at the same time being a guest and learning while someone else is doing all the culinary work? Of course, you can do this and have a great time in the process! See page 30 and read about Chef Bruce Finch, then come join his class to have a great time, whether by taking notes in a student role or enjoying the camaraderie of your classmates (old and new friends) and ambiance of the environment. A Party for Your Palate is the perfect blend of fun and education, whether you join a class alone or with a group. The best part is that you enjoy the culinary delights as they are created, making the class that much more fulfilling and satisfying both your inquisitive and palate requirements. Make sure to explore Hoberg’s as well (see page 25), if you are ready to view some relatively local getaways and start a family tradition. There is so much to do, as you can go all out with adventure plans or simply enjoy the wilderness and spa. This issue we were contacted by the Leland Athletic Director with bragging rights. We are very proud of the class of 2012 and point out some wonderful academic and collegiate achievements made by Leland High School athletes. There is some great success in a wide variety of sports for these hard working individuals, and we thank Leland for sharing this information with the community and us. Read our article from Green America Magazine. There is growing concern regarding genetically modified foods, also called genetically engineered (GMOs). Originally this was allowed and created to increase a farmer’s crop yield or reduce the amount of pesticide required, but this was only a short term benefit and the long term impact on mankind and the environment is much more concerning and was not considered. This process takes genetic material from one organism and inserts it into a second, completely different organism, such as a bacteria gene inserted into a plant. The side effects to humans and crops are considerable and only recently being shared with the public. We include an article about some of the foods to watch, but please take the time to educate yourself and family to build your awareness on what is now affecting the entire food chain. Besides feeling good, we also want to look good, so review our beauty section on page 11 and be educated on your decision to look your best, whether it is for you or your teen. The extension of that is to improve your environment and that is where Case Remodeling or Cinnabar Builders comes in handy! Spruce up and enjoy your family, friends, and home this summer. Vroooooooooooom!!!

J Bulow, a first grade student at Williams Elementary was chosen as the Sponsafier 4 grand prize winner by Toyota Racing for his race car design out of over 26,000 entries. The Sponsafier 4 winner is given a chance to spend a day with their favorite NASCAR driver. A.J. requested Kyle Busch to spend the day with him and to share this experience with all his classmates at Williams. On Wednesday, March 21st Williams held a special school wide assembly, Kyle Busch talked about NASCAR and racing and the students had a chance to ask him questions. The car that AJ designed was made and transported to Williams for everyone to see and take photos with. After the assembly Kyle Busch went to AJ’s classroom (Mrs. Ereno’s class) and took a photo with each child and gave each one an autographed die cast car that was a replica of AJ’s design. “The Sponsafier program was pretty neat and there were quite a few designs that were really, really cool,” said Kyle Busch, who drives the No. 18 Camry

for Joe Gibbs Racing. “The winning design has my picture on it and was designed by a six-year-old and his father – which makes me feel good. I met AJ in Phoenix last November and he’s a cool kid and a big race fan. I think it’s great he wanted to share his prize with his entire school.” The excitement was reflected by the student and prize winner AJ Bulow, as he said,
“This was the best day of my life. Having Kyle Busch come to Williams and meet my friends made my dream come true.” About Kyle Busch Kyle Busch has become one of the most successful race drivers in NASCAR. At age 26 he has already won over 100 NASCAR races. He became the first driver in NASCAR history to sweep its top-three series, the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series at a single venue, Bristol Motor Speedway in August 2010.

Getting to Know You! Meet Dr. Gary Beytin and Dr. Cindy Guillett | Owners – Almaden Family Chiropractic

G

ary and Cindy first met in 1979 at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. “We were married in 1981 and moved to San Jose that same year, after graduating.” Gary was from New York and Cindy grew up here. She graduated from Camden High School in 1975, was a cheerleader and valedictorian. They raised both of their daughters Chelsea and Brooke in Almaden (Country School, Williams, Bret Harte and Leland), and they both attend college now. “This is our 31st year as practicing chiropractors. For the past 25 years, we were located next to AVAC. We moved to our NEW location at the corner of Branham and Camden Avenue in December 2011”. (1711 Branham Ln. A12, 408-269-7111) In our office you can expect a caring and loving environment. Great attention will be given to you and your entire family’s health. We use a variety of techniques ranging from very soft and noninvasive to some that are slightly more aggressive – depending upon your individual needs. We offer physical therapy modalities including ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, cold laser, intersegmental traction and massage therapy. We also have access to Spinal Decompression, if needed, and we have X-rays on site. Dr. Austin Jones, also from Almaden and a Leland graduate, recently joined our practice. Our approach is simple. We believe that health is among

our most valuable possessions. And while we generally meet people after they’ve lost their health, our commitment is two-fold: 1. When many people seek care in our practice they have one goal: relief. So that’s where we start! During this initial stage of intensive care, we have several obligations: Uncover the underlying cause of the health problem; Suggest a care plan to produce the fastest results possible; Offer ways patients can participate in their recovery; Explain the value of post-symptomatic wellness care. 2. We encourage our patients to achieve the highest levels of health they can. Through educational opportunities (like our website), we hope to communicate the value of ongoing chiropractic care. Our desire is to see our patients abandon the prevailing sickness care model of health (waiting for symptoms and then taking action), in favor

of the emerging wellness model. Find us on Facebook @ Almaden Family Chiropractic and our website: www.almadenfamillychiropractic.com

Getting to Know You! Meet Kim Mazzone Nicholson, Realtor | Better Homes and Gardens/Ventura Barnett Properties

M

y roots in Almaden Valley go way back. My great grandfather Rocco Mazzone came from Tricarico, Italy to New York State. Once he arrived in the United States he made his way to California where he settled in San Jose and bought a ranch off Almaden Expressway. My grandfather Ben Mazzone followed in his footsteps by purchasing 320 acres with his brother that is now the Almaden Hills Estates and Boulder Ridge Golf Course. He raised cattle and planted apricot and prune orchards. My parents also bought in Almaden and I attended Bret Harte and Leland High School. I have seen the area change from a two lane road where I had to walk a dirt path to the entrance of the library, to now becoming an upscale, executive community featuring numerous parks, open space and a rural atmosphere. It is a family-oriented community with excellent schools, plenty of recreational opportunities, magnificent views and wonderful real estate opportunities. I am married with four children. Both teenagers attend Leland High School. My son Ben is graduating this year and my daughter Madison is just finishing up her sophmore year. My stepchildren are with us on weekends and are getting involved in the community as well. I enjoy hiking, gardening and traveling whenever possible. I enjoy wine tasting and had a small part time job working in a local winery for a few years just to learn more about the industry.

08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

I believe the key to success is loving what you do and this is why I have been working in the real estate market for the past 11 years. I started out working in title and escrow and moved into real estate sales. I have over 25 years of sales and a customer service background. I believe my passion with the business shows in my ability to put people at ease and help them with the biggest purchase they will ever make. I understand the emotion that goes into purchasing that first home, to selling a home you have lived in for years and downsizing. My knowledge of the area, both in Almaden and Silicon Valley has helped me direct many of my clients that are not familiar with the areas and not sure where to call home. I have been able to guide them into the area that best suits their needs and desires. Please feel free to contact me anytime with your real estate questions about our amazing Almaden Valley!

with Tammy J. Campbell, R.N., M.P.S.

Battle of the Botoxs’

B

otox, Dysport, Xeomin... fountain of youth in a vial. Confused? Most people are so let me attempt to give you key information. The “original” Allergan botox was made for medical treatments such as stribusmusis, then FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002. This multi-specialty company has a portfolio that includes eye care, neuroscience, medical dermatology, medical aesthetics and treatments for urology patients. Botox has been the longest FDA approved product here in the U.S. with other companies continuously comparing their product to their onabotulinumtoxin A. Sounds scary and has frightened some into believing that botox is in fact a poison, snake oil, or a variety of other myths. Actually, it is a neurotoxin protein complex which, when injected into the muscle, quite effectively “sits” on the nerve endings within that muscle and blocks messages which our brain sends via this path to our muscles. By doing so, those “not so cute” muscles which create the unwanted wrinkles that make us look sad, mad and older than we remember, are effectively left at rest. No stimulus = no response! The second product that became available and FDA approved is Dysport. This company called Medicis, founded in 1988, has many products including Restylane and Perlane (wrinkle filler), dermatology and urology based products. Dysport has been on the market now several years. Xeomin, the third and last of the wrinkle fighters to date is made by Merz Aesthetics. Also with quite an impressive amount of consumer products ranging from anti dementia medication to aesthetics, Xeomin has only been released in the last 6 months. Many have administered this product to patients at a slightly lower price encouraging patients to embrace an alternative treatment option and allowing the opportunity to compare its efficacy against the other already established products. Xeomin has been removed from our list of wrinkle eliminators recently as a legal issue has arisen with Allergan alleging trade secret violations when Merz hired three former employee of theirs. So what, who and why do we pick certain products for our wrinkle treatments? The two most prominent reasons are cost and recommendations. Cost in today’s economy is gets our attention and embracing an alternative, less expense, wrinkle eliminator is easy for some yet frightening for others. Your decision may rest on confidence in the injector and their experiences and trust in these products. This may also include their relationship with the company and or the company representatives who call on their office. Women are more likely to try an alternative to the higher priced Allergan product if encouraged to by someone they are confident in and believe in their knowledge. In my opinion, botox gives a more consistent result as we have had more time to understand its mode of operation and staying ability, which is typically three months. Dysport feels “heavier” with the same dilution equation as botox, and depending on the level of experience of your injector, can and does have a higher incidence of eye tosis (drooping eyelid). Post treatment headaches have also been noted as somewhat higher with Dysport. The duration of Xeomin is less and if it becomes available again they may need to rethink the dilution equation. I believe the other companies keep the dilution ratio equivalent to that of botox so injectors aren’t confused and then reluctant to use their product. Yet these dilation ratios may affect the administration and results of each of these products. Hopefully these insights into aesthetic wrinkle treatments have helped you understand your options. All are ultimately safe yet ask questions and decide which treatment works best on “your” wrinkles. It is your face to enjoy so step back in time and relax... your muscles (wrinkles) will!!

District 10 Candidate Forum Update

W

ith the beautiful view from the Almaden Golf & Country Club as backdrop, the Almaden Business Association and 95120 Magazine hosted the District 10 Candidates Forum on May 3rd. Focused on issues impacting the current business environment, the questionand-answer format provided a chance for all six candidates to define their positions – and to differentiate themselves from a crowded field of quality contenders. Present for the panel discussion were Edesa Bitbadel, Robert Braunstein, Denelle Fedor, Johnny Khamis, Brian O’Neill, and Leslie Reynolds. The political forum was preceded by a business and social mixer attended by around 60 local business people and residents. The Almaden Golf & Country Club’s dining service staff prepared a sumptuous array of appetizers and refreshments. Business sponsors who helped support the event included Visiting Angels of San Jose; Union Bank/Blossom Hill Branch; Tutor Doctor of San Jose; Office Depot; and Unleashed of Almaden. City pension reform was the obvious topic at the top of the list. All candidates agreed that reform was necessary – but how to get there was another story! Business regulation and the impact it has on job growth were at the forefront of issues raised. Several candidates had specific ideas about keeping the City Council focused on initiatives to promote small business success. Others had strong feelings about eliminating Council time spent on passing new regulations that hinder job and business growth. Other concerns about endorsements, union support, and ties to current Council members were discussed. Support from a broad range of backers across the political spectrum helped define some of the positions taken by the candidates. Additional questions were raised about what could be done about empty retail space in local shopping centers. Again, creating a business-friendly environment by reducing the regulatory burdens and streamlining the permitting process was generally supported by everyone. Celebrating 10 years of service, the Almaden Business Association provides a platform for local businesses to join together to drive mutual success as well as provide support for community service organizations. As Almaden’s own lifestyle publication, 95120 Magazine provides a close-up of the pride and spirit of our local businesses and citizens. The District 10 elections offered these organizations an opportunity to help voters understand how each candidate views the important issues facing our community.

Say NO to GMO! 9 Ingredients to Watch

B

ecause of the prevalence of soy and corn in processed foods, about 30,000 Genetically Modified (GM) food products sit on US grocery store shelves. Here are the top 9 GM ingredients to watch for:

1. SOY | Genetically Modified since: 1996 How widespread: 94 percent of the US soybean crop was genetically modified in 2011, according to the USDA. What to watch for: Soybeans, genetically modified for a lower trans-fat content, show up in many traditional (i.e. not organic) soy products, such as tofu, soy milk, soy sauce, miso, and tempeh, as well as any product containing the emulsifier lecithin (often derived from soybean oil), such as ice cream and candy. 2. COTTONSEED | Genetically Modified since: 1996 How widespread: 90 percent of the US cotton crop was genetically modified in 2011, according to the USDA. What to watch for: The cotton plant, genetically modified to be pest-resistant, produces not only fibers for fabric, but also cottonseed oil, available on US shelves as a standalone product, and also commonly used as an ingredient in margarine, in salad dressings, and as a frying oil for potato chips and other snacks. 3. CORN | Genetically Modified since: 1996 How widespread: 88 percent of the US corn crop was genetically modified in 2011, according to the USDA. What to watch for: Corn has been modified for a number of different reasons: to resist herbicides, pesticides, and insects, and also for enrichment of vitamin C, vitamin B9, and beta carotene. GM corn can make its way into hundreds of products: breakfast cereals, corn-flour products (tortillas, chips, etc.), corn oil products (mayonnaise, shortening, etc.), and literally anything sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, which covers sweetened fruit drinks, processed cookies and other snacks, yogurts, soups, condiments, and many other products. 4. CANOLA OIL | Genetically Modified since: 1996 How widespread: 90 percent of the US canola crop was genetically modified in 2010, according to the New York Times What to watch for: Any canola oil made in the USA. This popular cooking oil, originally derived from rapeseed oil by breeders in Canada (the name is a contraction for “Canadian oil, low acid”) comes from a genetically modified plant that is no longer simply cultivated, but grows wild across the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Canada. 5. U.S. PAPAYA | Genetically Modified since: 1998 How widespread: 80 percent of the US papaya crop was genetically modified in 2010, according to the New York Times. What to watch for: All papaya grown in the US. Hawaiian papaya was 16 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

genetically engineered to withstand the ringspot virus in the late 1990s, with the GM version rapidly taking over the industry. In 2009, the USDA rescinded regulations prohibiting GM papaya on the US mainland; they have since been introduced to Florida plantations. 6. ALFALFA | Genetically Modified since: In 2005, the USDA deregulated GM alfalfa, though cultivation was later halted in 2007, following lawsuits from the Center for Food Safety and others who demanded a full evaluation of the threats to conventional alfalfa plants, and the emergence of herbicide-resistant weeds. Following a new environmental impact study, the USDA in 2011 again deregulated GM alfalfa, which is grown primarily as feed for dairy and sometimes beef cattle. How widespread: Data on the reintroduction of GM alfalfa in 2011 will be available from the USDA in July. At present, GM alfalfa is used primarily as hay for cattle. The Monsanto Technology Use Agreement for “Roundup Ready” GM alfalfa forbids its use for sprouts. What to watch for: It’s difficult to tell from a meat or dairy product whether it is from cows fed GM alfalfa. Look for organic dairy products and organic or 100 percent grassfed meat. An even better option is to go vegetarian or vegan. 7. SUGAR BEETS | Genetically Modified since: 2005 How widespread: 95 percent of the US sugar-beet crop was genetically modified in 2009, according to the USDA. Around half of the sugar produced in the US comes from sugar beets. What to watch for: If a non-organic bag of sugar or a product containing conventional sugar as an ingredient does not specify “pure cane sugar,” the sugar is likely a combination of cane sugar and GM sugar beets. 8. MILK | Genetically Modified since: 1994 How widespread: Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is a GM synthetic hormone injected into dairy cows to boost milk production. 17 percent of US cows were injected with rBGH in 2007 (most recent figure). Milk from rBGH-treated cows contains elevated levels of Insulin Growth Factor-1, a hormone linked to increased risks for certain cancers. What to watch for: No label is required for milk from rBGHtreated cows, though many brands of non-treated milk label their containers as such. 9. ASPARTAME | Genetically Modified since: 1965 How widespread: Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, is derived from GM microorganisms. It is found in over 6,000 products, including diet sodas. What to watch for: Avoid anything labeled as containing Nutrasweet, Equal, or Aspartame.

alk to women who have been in Lindsay Barker’s Mission:Fitness Boot Camp–with locations here in Almaden and Willow Glen–or who have trained with him, and many will say Lindsay changed their life. Lindsay’s 25 years as a fitness professional, his degrees in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition and a keen eye for exactly what each one of his client’s fitness needs are make him special when it comes to getting his clients in their best shape ever. That’s why his Mission:Fitness Boot Camp was named the best fitness program in Almaden! One boot camper had this to say: “I never even knew my potential until I met Lindsay and started going to his boot camp. I had immediate results–losing 20 pounds! But Lindsay’s style of training and attention to my personal goals led me to my new lifestyle of being fit, and eating good, healthy food! I even attempted a triathlon!” Many of Lindsay’s clients have been with him several times a week for years, and they keep coming back because they love the results they get, the motivation he brings to every workout, and the personal attention they get. He’s truly a “local” business owner. Lindsay attended Mitty High School, then San Jose State University and now lives in Almaden with his wife Kim, and son, Sammy. Have a conversation with him anywhere around Almaden, and it won’t be long before someone walks by that he has worked with–they may be firefighters he trained as Fitness Director for the SJFD, or parents of children he coached to swimming championships. Lindsay has spent his career helping others lose fat, get stronger, and prepare for athletic events. If you are looking for amazing results, give Lindsay a call!

My favorite vacation spot during the summer is visiting the beach. Walking along the warm sand with the cool blue waves splashing upon my toes is the best feeling I could experience during summer. I normally like to go with my friends so we can play an exciting game of volleyball or lay out while listening to the waves splashing against the rocky cliffs. We also like to look for little starfish under the boulders or longboard around the streets of Santa Cruz! I can’t wait to start my beach adventures during the summer of 2012! —Nina Derksen

Relay for Life!

elay for Life Almaden was held on May 5-6th at Leland High School this year. Teams of up to 15 kept a walker on the track for 24 hours. The event was a lively sleepover that encompassed the feel of a carnival with a climbing wall, bounce house, and activities at every campsite all with a common goal: raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The walk kicked off with the survivor lap; a sea of purpleclad cancer survivors of all ages who were joined by caregivers and friends on the second lap. Live music from great bands like “Doesn’t Matter”, “Old School” and “Sound Eclipse” kept the festivities full of energy and excitement. Even Sharky came out to lend his support! Each hour featured a different theme so it was not unusual to see Spiderman and Wonder Woman walking during the superhero hour or folks sporting pajamas for the PJ hour. The award for the most original money making activity went to the Pioneer High School Clubs for exotically decorated rent-a-bras which had breast cancer facts inside the cups. Also popular was the “Rent-aScout” where Boy Scout Troops 200 and 266 would walk for $1 a lap. The evening highlight was the Luminaria Ceremony where hundreds of luminaria bags were lit to honor those who have battled cancer and in memory of those who have passed. The featured speaker was author Michelle Whitlock (How I Lost My Uterus and Found My Voice) who spoke of her own battle with cancer 22 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

twice before the age of 30, and her choice to fight this disease that takes too much. A moment of silence was observed to remember those who have passed and was followed by a lone bagpiper playing “Amazing Grace”. The San Jose State Service Club members who were dressed as, appropriately enough, zombies made the overnight hours, appropriately nick-named the “Zombie Hours”, entertaining and lively! Cancer never sleeps and neither did many participants who walked or jogged throughout the night. When the sun came up Sunday morning, dedicated walkers were still circling the track. The closing was an opportunity to say thank you and recognize great contributions and support from the community. “The event could not happen without the support of our sponsors like Bridge Bank, this year’s presenting sponsor. We cannot thank the community enough for their support. I am humbled and overwhelmed with the outpouring of community involvement,” said Jennifer Casselli, event chairman. The total funds raised were $157,254 and counting. Plans have already begun for next year- mark your calendars for May 4-5, 2013 so you don’t miss out on this incredible experience!

Almaden Valley Aesthetics Show Some Skin This Summer! Almaden Valley’s very own Anti-Aging Clinic!

At AVA, our primary goal is complete client satisfaction with the best possible individual results. Our professional and dedicated staff is committed to providing you with a relaxing and satisfying experience.

recent survey by The Pew Internet Project found that looking for health information is the third most common activity of American Internet users. In fact, 8 in 10 Internet users reported going online for health information, and most often they were looking for information on behalf of a child or other dependent. Many people assume that physicians don’t like it when patients go online to get medical information; but you would be surprised at how many doctors, including me, encourage our patients to use the Internet, and actually use it ourselves to access medical information not available at our finger tips. I often chuckle to myself when I am talking to a patient on the phone and searching Google to find the answer to their question. For me, and many other doctors, the Internet has taken the place of the large textbooks that we doctors have in our office (but never actually read). Back in the “old days” I used to give patients all sorts of handouts with information about their child or a medical condition. More often than not the parent left the paper in the exam room or in the parking lot blackened and ripped after being run over by about 15 cars. Now I tell them to “Google it.” It’s simple, and green. While there is nothing wrong with using the Internet to access medical information, the key is to use the Internet and search engines such as Google properly to access the most helpful and accurate information. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of the Internet. Do not use the Internet to diagnose yourself or others Just as the typical medical student learns as he or she self-diagnoses through medical school, a little information can be dangerous. Use the Internet to gain information about the symptoms you or your child is having, and learn about any other associated signs or symptoms to look for that would help your doctor make the proper diagnosis. Instead of deciding on a specific treatment for a problem, learn about the treatment options that you can discuss further with your doctor.

Consider The Source Blogs, tweets, Facebook, and message boards are not a good place to get accurate medical information. These are essentially online tea parties, and a tea party is never a good place to get medical information. They often present biased, inaccurate, or outright false information which can be ultimately harmful to you and your family. Even websites which are run by seemingly reputable individuals (for example in the pediatric world of Dr. Sears or Dr. Green) often have an agenda and skew information to support that agenda. Also be wary of groups with professional sounding names which may be deceiving. For example, the National Vaccine Information Center has an important-sounding name and nifty website which suggests some legitimacy. However, the creators and contributors are nowhere to be found on the website. This is, in fact, an anti-vaccine organization that routinely publishes outright false information about vaccines. Instead, stick to websites from or sponsored by major medical centers such as Stanford University, The Mayo Clinic (and a host of others). This is where you will find the most thorough, up-to-date and accurate information available.

I first went to Bruce’s class when a friend took me as a Birthday gift. I learned about cooking by watching, eating, and plain ol’ having fun! I attend each month to learn about cooking and to see my friends. For me, Bruce’s classes are a gift to myself that I think I deserve. Oh... and my cooking has improved too!”— Janet Kohl

A Party for Your Palate

aised in an academic-dominated family, Bruce naturally started his education to become a teacher, but decided his heart was elsewhere. Bruce began cooking as a teen out of necessity as he was the only one in his family who enjoyed cooking, and although he developed a culinary zeal, like many in the valley, he fell into a high tech career. Twenty-five years later, when Bruce remarried, he and his new wife Kris had a terrible catering experience, which turned into an inspiration. The following spring, Bruce endeavored on a journey to enroll and graduate from culinary school and the last six years, he has been passionate about offering instructional cooking classes and catering services through his company A Party for Your Palate. I experienced his class recently and was amazed, but please listen to commentary from one of his longtime students to best understand. “I first signed up for Bruce’s class on a recommendation of a friend. I had actually just taken a class at Sur La Table a few months earlier, and was disappointed about the way their class was run. I have been an active home cook for the last 7 years or so, and have been looking for ways to learn “real techniques” - beyond watching Food Network. After Bruce’s first class - his soup class - I was hooked. That one class alone taught me about techniques, classes of soups, ways to make broth, and what to look out for at the market - more helpful information than any other class or TV show, combined. From this first class, I’ve signed up for every consecutive lesson, learning how to create delicious comfort foods, appetizers, Asian cuisine, and am already signed up for the brunch class this month. Bruce’s classes cater to people like me, who want to learn how to cook all these delicious items, while allowing the less frequent cook to simply watch and taste. I was surprised at my first class when Bruce did all the cooking himself. I had become used to the Sur La Table type classes, where a group of 10 people split up, and work on a different part of the meal - or dish. With these classes, you often miss

a few important steps, and don’t always get the attention from the teacher. Because Bruce does all the cooking, you can see every step of every meal, with very clear and understandable directions. Bruce also stops to answer questions, which proves helpful if you’re taking notes, and really want to cook the meal at home. Overall, I love Bruce’s passion for cooking, and feel lucky he wants to share his joy and information. Bruce allows you to learn simple and complex technique, explains why you do certain things in the kitchen, and makes you better understand the art of cooking. The price of his class is a steal, whether you’re looking for cooking instruction, or just want to watch and sample a delicious meal - you wouldn’t get this amount of food for this price, anywhere else... I have even hired Bruce for an important personal event, knowing that I’ll get someone who truly cares about the food he will serve.” — Darrin Shimizu In addition to wowing his faithful students, Bruce is also very involved with the community giving back. Besides offering private classes to be auctioned off at local schools, he has also been involved with a volunteer program for 4th graders for the last 11 years. Bruce welcomes a call from you to discuss his group classes whether you want to join an existing class or create your own with friends. It’s an evening of fun, food, friends new and old, and the best part, you get to eat too! There are new classes every month, so come back often to experience all new things. Make your next event

Step Into My Living Room…..

W

ant to be your own boss? Desire more financial independence in an uncertain economy? If you are a budding entrepreneur looking to launch a new business from your living room, what do you need to consider before embarking on this new opportunity? 1. Naming your business: Doing business under any name other than your legal name (or the legal name of your corporation or LLC) requires filing a fictitious business name statement. Keep in mind that even if it’s a home business serving people in a local area, you can’t pick a name that infringes on someone else’s trademarks. 2. Trademarks: Trademarks are the words, brands or “marks” used in association with goods or services. There are several ways a mark gains protection, either through use or through making a formal filing with a state or federal agency. Marks are granted protection only for the goods or services they are used with (so “Apple” may have protection in the computer category, but not in footwear). Make sure you are clear on all trademark issues before you get too far into your business. If you do not, you may not only have to reprint all of your business cards and letterhead, but you may also be required to pay the trademark owner for your use of their mark, even if you infringed on their mark unintentionally. 3. Incorporation: Even in a home based business, you need to be concerned about liability (particularly if people are coming to your home). One important decision is whether to stay as a sole proprietorship (with no limited liability) or to form a corporation or limited liability company. This is an important decision, but with too many factors to discuss here. However, that does not diminish this decision’s importance…look at this one carefully. 4. Insurance: Limiting liability and managing risk is part of every business... even home based businesses. Insurance is another way to manage risk. While you probably have insurance on your home, you’ll want to talk with your insurance agent to determine what additional insurance you’ll require for your home based business. How much insurance you require will vary based on the risks inherent in your particular type of business. 5. Permits/Licenses: Every business operating in San Jose needs a business license, even home based businesses. In addition, certain businesses require other permits. For example, if you are going to start a food-based business, there are going to be health ordinances you’ll need to comply with. 6. Zoning: If you are renting, you’ll need to be sure your lease allows you to operate a home-based business. Even if you are a homeowner, you still may be subject to restrictions, either because of your HOA agreement may not allow it or city zoning restrictions prohibit it. 7. Reseller Certificate: With a reseller certificate, you don’t need to pay tax on items you buy that are then resold to your customers. If you don’t obtain one, it may mean you’ll have a higher cost of goods than necessary. Look into getting one. 8. Sales Tax/Taxes: Whether you pay taxes on Schedule C of your personal return, or on a separate corporate return, will depend on your business. You may be required to collect and regularly submit sales tax, and after your first year, you may also need to submit quarterly tax payments. If you don’t have much experience in tax and accounting, finding an accountant to help you in your business will be very helpful (and not too expensive). A home based business is an exciting step, but requires preparation just like those enterprises starting in an office. The above article is provided for informational purposes only. Dear 95120 Magazine Readers, In March (2012) I hired a CPA (LMGW) to review the City’s use of revenue lease bonds. Unlike obligation bonds, these bonds are used by the City without a vote of the people. As a result of my inquiry, I discovered the following: Per the 2011 Debt Report, the City of San Jose has leveraged $853,683,000 of the General Fund to support the use of lease revenue bonds. Of that amount, $504,470,000 is “non-self supporting debt” and $349,213,000 is “self supporting debt.” Both types of debt have recourse to the General Fund. Further, the City pays approximately $25 million in debt each year for City Hall, Golf Courses (Los Lagos & Rancho Del Pueblo), Hayes Mansion and the Arena Enhancement combined— taking $25 million away from funding for police, libraries, police, and other core services. This issue has contributed to San Jose’s poor credit rating. On May 4, 2012, the Business Journal published this article, San Jose faces another credit-rating downgrade on bonds, “Standard & Poor’s (S&P) downgraded general obligation bonds from AAA to AA+ and lease revenue bonds from AA+ to AA on April 11, 2012. S&P gave the bonds a negative outlook.” The City is legally obligated to pay for the debt on these bonds before it can pay for anything else. At this time, the debt is more than the appraised value of the properties, leaving the City with no other option than to pay the debt each year. To stop further lease revenue overuse, I recommend amending the City Charter to ensure San Jose residents can vote on lease bonds (as voters do for obligation bonds). Further, I want to include that the City must disclose how much the General Fund is leveraged for past bond debt when asking for approval of either an obligation or lease revenue bond by the voters. Currently, the City does not need a vote from residents to use lease bonds nor does the City need to disclose the amount of money they have leveraged on the General Fund for debt.

Congratulations to these Leland High School athletes who share their successful achievements and advice. Their work ethic and merits have rewarded them with full paid college and university scholarships. Well done!

Ashley Arras, Water Polo

Recruited to San Jose State, D1 Carrier Aspiration: Working with animals

How did you become involved in your current sport? My best friend got me started. I was a field player but during the physicals my coach was taking heights and said, “Wow you’re tall, you should be a goalie.” How did your involvement in your sport help your college goals? It helped me get into college, financial and academically. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? Work hard! It will get you anywhere. With hard work and dedication, it took me three years to get better and make it to a D1 program.

Jessica Chaulklin, Softball

Recruited to Weber State University, D1, GPA: 3.2

How did you become involved in your current sport? I was going to be signed up for soccer but the team was too small, so I went to softball at the age of six. My two older sisters signed up as well and it was a family function so we all did it together with my father [which was nice] considering my parents were split up. 32 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? Being involved in softball helped me to not worry about college applications. Also to be involved in a sport bettered my chances on getting into a college that my grades alone may not have done. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? The advice I would give to young student athletes is never give up your dream, or doubt your skills. If you believe in yourself you can do anything. Keep up the hard work because it will pay off in the end.

Jeff Carnduff, Football

Humboldt State University, D2, GPA 3.0 How did you become involved in your current sport? When I was seven I saw a sign for Pop Warner and I wanted to give it a shot. I have been playing ever since. How did your involvement in your help you to achieve your college goals? Football has taught me a lot of life lessons, as well as my coaches. I am lucky to have such great coaches around me. It has helped me get accepted to college and makes me want to work harder to achieve more.

. What advice would you give to a young student athlete hoping to play their sport in college? Hard work pays off, do what you love to do, and no matter what obstacle is in front of you, never give up.

Molly Cuervas, Field Hockey

Recruited, Sports Management, Adelphi University, D2 GPA 3.3. Career Aspirations: Work for a sports franchise or in sports media. National Charity League (philanthropy): I’ve completed about 100 hours of service over my 4 years of high school by helping numerous shelters (people in our community). How did you become involved in your current sport? It was offered at my new high school sophomore year, and I thought it looked fun. (Little did I know I would switch my collegiate plans from soccer to field hockey.) How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? It helped me to stay focused on my studies and it was the main reason I actually got into college. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? You must stay focused in the classroom and try to develop a strong work ethic. It’s tough balancing sports, school and a social life sometimes, but it’s definitely not impossible. Most of all, have fun! If you’re playing the sport you love, having fun is the easiest part of all.

Scott Keighley, Water Polo

Recruited, walking on, Loyola Marymount, D1 GPA 3.61

How did you become involved in your current sport? I started swimming competitively at a young age. Just before high school, I decided to try out water polo and soon favored it. How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? My involvement in water polo taught me the values of hard work, determination, and leadership. With those, I was able to have the drive to achieve my college goals. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? To a young athlete hoping to play in college, I would say, “Even if you may not be the most talented, if you work the hardest, it will pay off. Be the first at practice and the last to leave. If you give yourself a goal, you will achieve it.”

Jacob Ley, Water Polo

Recruited by UC Davis, D1, Major: Computer engineering GPA 3.8 (unweighted), 4.1 (weighted). Had a 4.0 Junior year and a 2040 SAT How did you become involved in your current sport? After competitive swimming, I tried water polo the summer prior to my freshman year. I had to choose between water polo and cross country when I entered high school and luckily chose water polo. How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? Fortunately I had the grades to go to UC Davis but my sport gave me early admittance and helped my decision. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? Be very active in your own recruiting. Send emails to coaches and sell yourself as a player.

Way to go Class of 2012!!!

Tim Mclaughlin, Football

Boulder Colorado, D1. Major: Business, GPA 3.7 Worked with Challenger baseball league for children with special needs. How did you become involved in your current sport? I began playing when I was much younger and fell in love with every part of the sport. How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? Some of my goals were to have options for college and even though I chose not to accept the scholarship offers I received, football led me to many schools I would have considered. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? Anyone who wants to play college football has a tough road ahead. No matter how hard they work, difficulties in the process will always be present. The best asset you could have would be a well known coach who works hard to get your name out there.

Samantha Murphy, Water Polo

Recruited by UCSB D1, GPA 3.98 Teachers summer assistant: Volunteer How did you become involved in your current sport? I did year-round swimming prior to high school and my dad forced me to try out for water polo How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? Water polo allowed me to have access to colleges that I wouldn’t have looked at if I didn’t play. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? Keep your options open. If you want to play at a college you have to contact them and keep lines of communication open.

Andrew Nelms, Football

Recruited by Washington U in St. Louis, D3 Major: International Business, GPA 4.11, AP scholar, National Merit commended student, 132 community service hours, All- league 2010-2012 How did you become involved in your current sport? I started playing in sixth grade after I decided to quit soccer. My dad was a good player and inspired me to give it a try. I have been playing ever since. How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? My sport acted as a stress-releasing recreational activity. It allowed me to enjoy myself and make quality friendships while simultaneously pursuing my academic goals. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? Dedicate yourself. Choose either academics or athletics and throw your heart, mind, and soul into your work. It will be tough but it is so worth it.

Chris Santini, Football

Recruited by Boise State as a sophomore, D1 Major: Sociology/Kinesiology, GPA 3.4 How did you become involved in your current sport? I have been playing for 6 years. Both my brothers did so I did. How did your involvement in your sport help you to achieve your college goals? It taught me how to get through the tough times, keep pushing and not give up on and off the field. What advice would you give to a student hoping to play their sport in college? I would tell them it’s all will power. You have to be willing to work ever day and be willing to sacrifice a lot of fun things and time.
