Proudly printed locally in support of our local economy.

95120editor ocal elections are happening this summer and there are many challenges facing the local government, intensifying the importance to elect the right District 10 City Council candidate, as their intellect and influence will be required to team with the city to correct financial and services concerns. With that said, we each will make our educated decision on who we believe can steer our community in the right direction – especially considering the delicate budget situation inherited from decades of short-term decision-making which hindsight rendered as reckless. Luckily, there are strong, energetic candidates and you have a chance to meet them yourself and hear them voice their ideas and charters, during the upcoming Almaden Business Association and 95120 Magazine sponsored District 10 City Council Candidates’ Forum at the Almaden Country Club May 3rd. If you want a specific question answered, don’t hesitate to register for this event and make your suggestions in advance. You do not have to be a business owner or a member of the ABA to attend this event, but it is recommended that you have interest in matters affecting local business, as that will be the forum topic guideline. Make sure to read the candidates’ advertisements included in this issue and to visit their websites to find out what they stand for. EDITOR PHOTO

Makeup and hair designed by dollhouse Salon (ad on p5).

Thanks ladies, for truly “dolling me up!”

The Almaden real estate market appears to be doing well. We have low inventory, quick sales and multiple offers once again. Let’s hope this trend continues as it can only mean great things ahead. Last issue, we welcomed the new onwers of Unwined Wine Bar & Shop and they are settling in nicely, enjoying “business as usual.” This issue we welcome Paulette Tsigaris and Stavroula who have just opened their stylish Redken certified hair salon named dollhouse Salon. They are providing hair, nail and makeup services and Redken products. Give it a try and awaken your “inner doll.” The elegant design and ambiance are worth a visit in itself. See their ad on page 5 and don’t miss their GRAND OPENING party on April 7th. I also welcome more new businesses advertising this issue such as the well known Lindsay Barker of Mission:Fitness, Tutor Doctor of San Jose, and of course the District 10 Candidates: Leslie Reynolds, Johnny Khamis, Edesa Bitbadal, Denelle Fedor, Robert Braunstein and Brian O’Neill. While supporting our local businesses, remember to also support the Unicorn Thrift Shop with your donations and purchases. Read about EMQ FF on page 6. Please enjoy once again, our new “95120 Clip and Save” on page 16. Not all specials in the magazine are duplicated there, but some have been consolidated in this area for clipping convenience for our readers.

EMQ FamiliesFirst

ou may have heard of “The Great Silicon Valley Capers” advertised here and benefiting EMQFF, (originally a shelter for San Jose youth and now statewide offering a range of community-based programs for children and their families in crisis.) The volunteer event-organizers go to extreme levels to present some of the trickiest quizzes and gimmicks to challenge the most brilliant of minds, during an afternoon mixing with interesting individuals, participating in an auction, and topping it off with a sumptuous meal. The event depends upon corporate and family sponsors as well as attendees. EMQFF also has a full staff of volunteers raising funds through the Unicorn Shop. Why help this specific humanitarian cause? To answer, we include current statistics, case studies, and invite you to attend the Capers event presented by EMQFF. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, in California a child is abused or neglected every four minutes. With the number of children in crisis growing, private donations make the difference between a child receiving services or being denied basic needs (such as food, bed, sheets, shoes…). No longer does government funding cover the costs of service, let alone the extra care that truly makes a difference in the life of the children and families EMQFF serves. With private financial assistance EMQFF helps reconnect children to relatives that these children never knew existed; provide emergency help with food and lodging; buy a child a birthday or holiday gift; continue counseling services when government funding is not available; recruit and train the best foster and adoptive families; and train staff. Their Family Finding program reconnects children with safe, healthy biological family members to speed their recovery from emotional trauma. Prior

06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

to Family Finding implementation in September 2003, only 37% of youth who were not living with family at entry to EMQFF 24/7 Intensive Family Services program were discharged to families. Now, it is expected that 70% of the children will be reunited with families and that 90% will establish viable family connections. Let’s review some actual cases. HOPE FOR FOSTER Savannah was severely neglected by her drug-abusing mother, living in a house without plumbing. By age four, she was not potty-trained. Her teeth were rotted so severely that she was in constant pain. Allegations of paternal sexual abuse only painted a darker picture of sadness, loneliness and despair. Placement in an EMQFF foster home was her salvation. Sue had been a certified foster parent for nearly 15 years when she got the call. She already had three foster children in her home, but she welcomed Savannah. Savannah didn’t know the simplest things, like how to eat with silverware or play games. She was traumatized and malnourished. “I could see torture behind the eyes of this beautiful child, and I vowed that no one would ever hurt her again,” Sue said. Sue dove into the formidable task of getting medical and dental services for Savannah. She had over 250 hours of trauma-based therapy over a twoyear period. Over time, Savannah began to smile a little, run and jump and play as a child her age should.

“Post-traumatic stress, flashbacks, jumping at certain sounds, haven’t gone away. But she is learning to cope.” Sue made a permanent commitment and adopted Savannah. While Sue devoted her time to Savannah’s progress she continued to nurture her other three foster girls. FAMILY FINDING WORKS Trevor was a hopeless, withdrawn and aggressive 14 year-old when he arrived at a Residential Treatment Facility for the most severely disturbed adolescents. He showed very little enthusiasm for anything. He hadn’t had a permanent home since he was four and had lost contact with his family. In collaboration with Trevor’s County Department of Family and Children’s Services worker, EMQ put in motion their new Family Finding training. A team began with a family tree, and during this process, the discussion led Trevor to pull out a photo of an older brother, Brian, who the team had never heard about, but whom Trevor had never forgotten. The team was able to locate out-of-state grandparents, who were interested in communication. Later they tracked his maternal aunt and an uncle who had not been lost, but who was not considered for a permanent home for Trevor. The father was reengaged to form a partnership to be a part of his son’s life. At a family meeting, the father told those gathered that Trevor’s family included only the few who were currently in the room, but by the end of the meeting, there were over sixty names of family members to research. Later, Trevor’s aunt revealed he had yet another older brother, Mark, that he did not know existed. He was Trevor’s biological brother who had been raised by his own paternal grandparents in another state and who had never known the maternal side of his family. When the aunt told Trevor this he smiled and said “cool”. For Trevor, this was the equivalent of turning cartwheels on the lawn! There were tears, laughter, hugs and family photos shared that day. Immediately after Trevor was reunited with family and given his new home, his demeanor and behavior began to improve. Today Trevor is still living with his uncle and cousin. He has had overnight visits with his aunt, met her children and husband, and receives letters and phone calls from grandparents. Recently, he spent a week in Nebraska on his own getting to know family members. He has friends and has recovered from his bouts of anxiety. This is a teenager with hope for the future.

Challenges Facing California’ s Foster Youth • CA has nearly 80,000 foster children. • Each year, about 5,000 of these youth “age out” of foster care. Within 18 months, up to 50% will become homeless. • 65% of youth leaving foster care need immediate housing. • At age 18, 61% have no job experience and 1/3 end up on welfare. • Foster children experience 4X’s the emotional problems as peers. • Foster kids repeat a grade twice as often as other students and 37% of foster youth will drop out of high school. • 25% of former foster youth will be incarcerated within the first 2 years of exiting care. • 42% of foster youth, including 60% of women, become parents within 2.5 - 4 years after exiting care. Trends Impacting California’s Children & Families • Annually, over 400,000 children are referred to the child welfare system in California. • Everyday in the U.S. at least 3 children die from child abuse and neglect. More than 85% are under age six and 44% are under the age of one. • One-third of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize their own children. • Up to 70% of youth in the juvenile justice system suffer from previously untreated mental health needs. • Abuse and neglect increase the likelihood of adult criminal behavior by 28% and violent crime by 30%. • Abused and neglected children are 25% more likely to experience problems in adolescence such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use, and mental health issues. • Approximately one in five American children has a mental disorder. In California, up to 875,000 children are estimated to be seriously emotionally disturbed.

Attention Williams Elementary Parents! Looking for Caring Mentors for the Time-In Program

T

he Williams Elementary School Time-In program is run on a volunteer basis to mentor “at risk” students once a week during their lunch recess. The goal of the program is to make available a supportive and accepting environment with an adult “special friend” who is a good listener, can help connect students with administration and aide with their studies as needed. This is not counseling, only a time to connect with another adult on campus in a safe environment. Adult volunteers focus on listening and possess the ability to not be easily shocked by adolescent statements. Volunteer are mentors and role models who care about developing children. Students come to realize that adults can be trusted to help him or her in ways peers cannot. Volunteers accept a student-oriented, long-term commitment. After fingerprinting and TB test, adult volunteers are guided in non-directive play techniques and become confidants who are good listeners and have a sense of humor. Good ideas and information are

available through The Cornerstone Project workshops. Cornerstone aids students in recognizing their own assets and how to build on them. At periodic Time-In meetings, mentors can share ideas, strategies, and reflect. For more information or to take the next step and volunteer to be a mentor, Williams Elementary School parents can phone Linda Salah at (408) 234-2952. “Working as a Time-In Coordinator at Bret Hart for 8 years were some of the most rewarding experiences I have encountered. I am now fortunate enough to work with Karen Heverling the Principal at Williams Elementary School. I presently have 6 Time-In Volunteers and have 8 children in need of mentoring. If you have an inclination to find out what the program is about and what is expected from you as a volunteer, feel free to call me at the above number. It takes a special person to be able to do this and your rewards are beyond your imagination.”

The welcoming from UNWINED’s wonderful customers and the Almaden community has been amazing. We are so happy to continue with the success and traditions of what has been called the Cheers of 95120. — Rory Chitwood

The Minefield of Chronic Disease

O

n average, 30-50% of our clients suffer from what would be classified as a chronic condition (defined as an illness lasting more than 3 months). According to the Center for Disease Control, the top chronic diseases in California in 2008 were heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Since then reports now include Alzheimer’s as a defined chronic disease. Furthermore the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics reports that 75% of healthcare costs are for people with chronic conditions. Seven out of ten deaths among Americans each year are from chronic disease. The prevalence of depression among chronic disease sufferers is staggering. The older individuals are prone to experience loss and a feeling of isolation as loved ones and friends die. Children often move away or are busy with the responsibilities of their new families – which can contribute to some seniors becoming less likely to reach out and try new activities. Studies have further found that family members (husbands, wives, son, daughters, etc.) who serve as caregivers to loved ones, themselves have a greater chance of having a chronic disease. The family members reported feeling overwhelmed by having to care for another, with no end in sight. The recommendation: Don’t allow such stress to cause you to develop a chronic disease. Instead call your personal physician or our agency and discuss your family’s situation. We are more than willing to help you find options, where you can go back to being a family member again. Our agency prides itself on having the best caregivers; each goes through a rigorous and detailed background check, take and pass a Caregiver Quality Assurance test. This practice is to assure we hire the very best and most reliable people. Each caregiver has strong fundamental skills and receives additional advanced training throughout the year. This year, members of our staff will be certified as trainers through the Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program in order to better serve our chronic care clients. This training will enable our staff, as trained lay leaders, to lead and/or participate in small-group workshops designed to help people throughout Santa Clara County diagnosed with a chronic disease. Given the minefield of unknowns surrounding chronic disease, patients often mishandle their self care responsibilities, with potentially tragic outcomes. Through the Stanford program, patients, and their family, gain insight and self-confidence in their ability to manage their symptoms. The intent of the Stanford program from its inception was for those with a chronic disease to spend less time in the hospital. Each of our staff members participating in this program themselves have a diagnosed chronic disease. Call Visiting Angels San Jose today and discuss your family’s situation, we are happy to take the time to help you find a solution in taking care of your loved ones. 408-977-1133.

It’s All About Community! S

May 6, 2012 Cathy Eddy, Jane Johnson and Yvonne Spitz

cleroderma is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. It affects women, men and even children. It does not discriminate based on race, although it can be more prevalent in some. Its name which translates to “hard skin” in Greek, doesn’t even begin to capture the potential horrors of this disease. In its worst form not only is skin hardened all over the body all at the same time, but vital organs, blood vessels, muscles, tendons and ligaments can all be ravaged - and very often all at once. If you think a body part could be affected, most often it is. Those lucky enough to have top medical care are often fortunate to discover the disease in its earliest stages and have the best chance of surviving the first critical five years. Others suffer for years, living with many concurrent ailments, only to perish too early. San Jose lost a teen after she developed the disease when a mere 4-year-old, beautiful, young girl. Although scleroderma is more prevalent than muscular dystrophy, it is much less known. Until recently, many doctors considered it a death sentence. Now through valuable research there is hope, and outcomes are improving. However, unlike other well-known, well-staffed, and well-funded disease charities, the only hope of a cure for Scleroderma is by communities like ours Stepping Out together all across the world. Community is what makes Almaden unique. When an Almaden mom was afflicted with the worst form of scleroderma and told to get her affairs in order just a few short years ago, members of our community immediately banded together to help, volunteering countless hours and donating much needed funds to the 22 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

local chapter of the national foundation. Up sprang a community walk and run. It takes a huge effort to pull something like this off. Thanks to our wonderful Almaden business sponsors for supporting this event. Key event directors over the years have included Cathy Eddy, Yvonne Spitz and Jane Johnson as co-chairs; Daniel DiNaro who created the look; Theresa Edington who prepared the silent auction; Michelle Bandoni, Shannon Brannan & Sharon Wicks who coordinated volunteers and packets; Denise Johnson and Pioneer H.S. students who created the kids’ areas and volunteer prospecting; Michelle LaPlant who researched trails and tees; Sharon Elder who worked recognition; Marybeth Torpey and Janette Canare who covered photography; and John & Tawnie Yates and Jenny Bradanini who pulled the logistics and equipment together. All the many Almaden locals including Cub Scouts Pack 282, Boy Scouts Troop 294 and Brownie and Girl Scout Troops 60041 & 60889, Pioneer and Leland volunteers, San Jose and surrounding community volunteers and contributors working with them are invaluable! Both participation in the event and the fundraising by so many in the community is why the goal is exceeded each year. You can help us continue this trend. What an amazing group of people! We are so fortunate to have them right here in 95120! Please join us the morning of Sunday, May 6, 2012 for the 3rd Annual “Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma” held at our very own Almaden Lake Park. Two separate courses offer competitive athletes the focus they desire to

truly compete on a professionally managed, accurately measured and timed course for either a 10K or 5K run; another offers day-trippers a relaxed 2 mile stroll or a fun jog along the lake with friends and family. All offer recognition and prizes. The entire area is equipped for wheelchair access, and strollers are welcome. There’s even a raffle and silent auction onsite. A premier raffle offers a unique, one-of-akind experience with the San Jose Sharks that is priceless. You can purchase tickets online and don’t need to be present to win. Multiple sponsors and vendors, many who attend the event to promote their wares and services, greet you before and after the race or stroll. Children’s activities including face painting, and crafts keep little ones busy. Food is in abundance with a new addition this year. This is truly a community event and part of a nationwide effort. From its inception in 2010,

every participating member of our community has remarked how professional, unique and fun this local event is and how they appreciate having it so close to home. The best part is being with friends and family from our local community in an atmosphere where we can all feel good doing something for others in need - many of whom are right here in our neighborhood. And the whole morning is focused towards a very worthy cause: finding the cause of and ultimately the cure for Scleroderma. Fortunately, the Scleroderma Foundation has the highest 4-star rating by Charity Navigator, so you can feel good that your investment of time and money is going to a proven cause. You truly can be part of something much larger than yourself. By bringing your family, friends, co-workers, signing up with your own fundraising page and spreading the word far and wide, you’ll help reach the goal. And you can enjoy a morning out with your own community feeling good for doing good! For more information, please see www.scleroderma.org/norcal and click on the link for the San Jose Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Run/Walk! We look forward to seeing you there! “This will be my third time participating in this event. It is really well organized but also has the feel of a small town friendly event. I am not the type to deal with the big Bay to Breakers crowds so this is my 10 K of choice. It is perfect for me and the family; I can try for a timed official PR while my kids and husband participate in the fun run/walk... and the best part I know that we are supporting a very important cause that is near and dear to my heart.” — Jenny Bradanini “This is such an important cause and close to our hearts as we watch our friend battle with Scleroderma. We are proud to be part of such a fun community event that also brings awareness and much needed funds to this horrible disease.” — Theresa & Jim Edington

“Everything looks great, and we are very happy with the end result. You’ve delivered on everything we’ve asked for and the results are outstanding.”

Shots... not just for babies anymore

W

e tend to think of immunization shots as given just to infants and children, but new pre-teen and teen recommendations have been made regarding vaccines and boosters.

If you have a child 11 years or older you will want to make sure they have received the following vaccines: Tetanus & Whooping Cough (aka TdaP) This shot is now required by SJUSD for entry into 7th grade. Whooping cough causes severe coughing spells that can lead to breathing difficulty, vomiting, and disturbed sleep. It is particularly dangerous in young infants and the elderly as it can cause death. A few years ago, California saw a significant increase in whooping cough cases. This has been attributed to the unvaccinated people in our state. With the recent push to get all adolescents vaccinated, California once again has whooping cough under control. This vaccine is given at age 11, then boosters every 5-10 years. This vaccine is also recommended for adults who have frequent contact with infants or the elderly. Meningococcal (aka Menactra) Meningococcus is a bacteria that is the leading cause of meningitis in people between the ages of 16-21. Of those infected with meningococcus each year about 10-15% of these people die and another 15% will have permanent damage such as limb loss, deafness or seizures. All teens, but particularly those who live in close quarters like dormitories, army barracks or are on a sports teams that share a locker room, are at particularly high risk. The meningitis vaccine (now required by many colleges) is given to teens ages 11- 18, with a booster recommended after 5 years. HPV (aka Gardasil) The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the U.S. More than half of sexually active men and women are infected with HPV. Along with causing genital warts, HPV is one of the most common causes of cervical cancer in women. Cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths among women around the world. HPV can also cause penile cancer in men and cancers in other areas such as the throat and tonsils. There is no cure for HPV infection. The HPV vaccine is now recommended for females and males 11 years and older in a series of 3 shots. Hepatitis A Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver. It is transmitted through contaminated food and water. Common contamination sources are eating food prepared by someone with the virus, swimming in an ocean, lake or pond or any international travel. The average amount of time lost from school or work in infected individuals is 4-6 weeks. For the last several years, the Hepatitis A vaccine has been given to infants starting at age 1. However, there are many teens and adults who missed that window and need to be caught up. This vaccine is a series of two injections given six months apart. Chicken Pox (aka Varivax) Now given as a two-dose series. Any teenager who was vaccinated as a child and received only a single dose should get a second dose now. Teens who have not received the vaccine and not had chicken pox should receive two shots at least one month apart.

Spam, Spam, Spam Spam...

S

pam (not the canned meat-like substance, but all of that unwanted commercial email), makes up the bulk of our email (even with junk mail filters). While Spam is a relatively new word in our vocabulary, the idea has been around for quite a while — in fact, it’s been reported that the first instance of unsolicited electronic messaging was via telegraph! Spam is believed to have received its name from a Monty Python sketch in which a crowd of Vikings in a restaurant (which only has SPAM products on the menu) chants “Spam, Spam, Spam Spam...” and drowns out all of the other well-intended conversation... much like your email spam seems to overpower your important messages. These days, you receive a daily flood of messages offering everything from discount Viagra to money from Africa which is ready for you to claim. In fact, it is estimated that more than 80% of the email traffic on the Internet is spam. So, you might think, “someone should pass a law to stop all this spam!” The good news is that they have. The bad news is that it hasn’t worked. States initially tried to slow the progress of spam, but since the Internet knows no state boundaries, and since it is also difficult to know where the sender is located, efforts were largely unsuccessful. Consequently, in 2003, Congress passed the CAN-SPAM Act in order to regulate unsolicited commercial email and put some uniform rules in place. To comply with CAN-SPAM, businesses should comply with the following requirements: 1. Don’t use a false or misleading header (e.g. the To, From, and Reply-To fields) or a deceptive subject line; 2. Identify the message as an advertisement; 3. Inform recipients where you are located; 4. Inform recipients how they can opt-out from future email, and honor any opt-out requests within 10 days; and 5. Monitor what others (such as email marketing companies you hire) are doing on your behalf. The problem with enforcing the laws preventing spam is two-fold: First, much of it originates off-shore so the U.S. lacks authority over those parties. Second, most spammers put significant effort into covering their trail, so it is often difficult to track down the message originator. In the event the culprit is located, they are often lacking financial resources to satisfy any judgment that is achieved. So, despite its best intentions, the CAN-SPAM Act is still a bit of a paper tiger. Recently, a case in San Jose, CA brought by Facebook extended the reach of CAN-SPAM to social networking. The court held that a company used false Facebook pages in order to direct users to commercial websites and violated the intent of the CAN-SPAM Act, namely curbing the volume of Internetbased unsolicited communications. So that’s a bit of progress. However, for now, we are going to have to continue to use spam filters to limit the bulk of these unwanted communications. But don’t forget to check the junk mail folder – filters often get some legitimate emails in there as well!
