WELCOMING WARMTH.

W

e are ready to experience and welcome spring’s warmth and gentle ambiance. With the recent tragic natural disasters, it is hoped that the coming spring sunshine can bring inner warmth to those who have suffered losses during the earthquakes and tsunamis. Two of our advertisers were actually traveling in some risky areas during that time, and luckily made it home unscathed. Sadly, as many know, our community also lost a member— husband, friend and father, Steve Sokol. He was an inspirational and dedicated athlete, holding many sports records and left his mark on the hearts of his many friends and family. His memory is valued, and we hope you think of him and his family who miss him as you read their story. We thank all who participated at 95120Nights! at Sonoma Chicken Coop, and we look forward to announcing our upcoming events next issue in the Coop ad and on our website. Join the site to be apprised of other event information and dates. There is plenty going on this season, so make sure to read the Save the Date calendar, and schedule your time appropriately. Add your own school, charity or business events to www.95120lifestyle.com and while there, don’t miss the Webextras! articles. This issue also includes an Almaden Country Club (ACC) organizational welcome, self-defense information from a local martial art Master, an autism story, and an entertaining excerpt from Joe Galiardi’s book, Hooked on Autographs. Silicon Valley Cares updates this year’s Broomstick Ball information, as they continue to fundraise for local outfits such as Almaden Valley Counseling Service (AVCS). Our neighborhood is full of positive diversity, in regard to race, religion and upbringing. There are some common threads all parents raising teenagers, however, should be aware of, and the AVCS, which was founded on this premise, has great

experience and understanding of the teen climate in our community, their behavior socially and in our schools. Katy Carter, AVCS Director, includes words of guidance. She is intimate with the daily pressure (whether brought on by social media, academic, family or peer) our teens confront as they become unique adults while developing their set of ‘decision making’ skills. It is nice to know AVCS is there for local families during this digital age of often unmonitored information exchange, along with popular television shows that no longer present the same moral aptitude and respect we grew up accustomed to expecting from our teens. Just as adults group around the office water cooler to talk about politics or documentaries, at lunchtime many teens converse about the latest YouTube video or what is happening in “last night’s television episode.” Because I am no aficionado, I decided to watch an episode of Pretty Little Liars with my daughter. As the episode unfolded, a young student was having an affair with her teacher. I quickly informed my daughter that no one I ever personally knew (or even a friend of a friend) has done that, so she would be aware that it is very uncommon. Another parent told me the popular show Glee included an episode encouraging teen drinking and I can’t even comment about Jersey Shores. I liked AVCS’s director’s advice. As parents, it helps to remind our kids of our family values so they can make smart decisions the majority of the time, whether we are there to witness or not. Your teen may be making you proud on a weekly basis, and you don’t even realize how difficult of a time they may be having to do so, as I am sure they do not share all the pressure and concerns they are up against on a daily basis. Chrissy Derksen I hope you enjoy this issue. Executive Editor & Founder cd@95120Lifestyle.com

Legacy of a Local Athletic Legend

Steve Sokol By Lorraine Gabbert

O

n March 7th Steve Sokol’s life came to a sudden end, but his legacy lives on through his son, Alex (12), and the inspiration he provided countless others. Completing 1,000 sit-ups in 10 minutes and cycling 500 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles, standing the entire way, earned Steve the title ‘World’s Fittest Man’ in the Guinness Book of World Records’ 1998 24-Hour Fitness Challenge. In addition to a Chemical Engineering degree from Tufts University, Sokol earned a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from San Jose State University. He holds numerous patents for exercise machines, wrote The Fitness Formula, and released a DVD, Super Abs. Leslie fell for Sokol when he was Cosmopolitan Magazine’s ‘Bachelor of the Month.’ Although he received hundreds of responses, Leslie’s letter and photo caught his eye. She was a dancer and former body builder. Steve was in California and Leslie was in Florida, where she had her own dance studio and televised exercise program. They wrote and visited each other. Then he took her to Lake Tahoe, and it was, ‘good-bye Florida.’ Locally, Sokol (54) was known for being a coach for Almaden Valley Youth Soccer League (AVYSL) and Almaden NJB Youth Basketball League. He was a personal trainer at Ronnie Lott’s Club Fitness, Royal Courts Club and Body Firm. He worked as a corporate trainer and nutritionist and helped

train Silicon Valley police officers and firefighters. Sokol was also a fixture at Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC). Most of all, Sokol will be remembered as a loving husband and devoted father. “To know Steve was to know the love he held for Alex,” says Frank Nesci, AVYSL Director of Training. With all his past success, there was no greater reward he could have received than the gift of his son.” “He was not only a great dad, but a great friend,” says Alex. “He was the most caring person I know. I just loved him.” The Sokol family competed in races almost every weekend and Alex and his dad trained daily, swimming, biking and running. It all came to a screeching halt when Sokol’s car crashed into a utility pole mere blocks from his home. He died upon impact. On Sunday, Sokol held back in a race in Los Gatos, not feeling his best. His wife, Leslie, asked him to see a doctor, but he declined. Monday morning, around 7:30 a.m., he left the house for a personal training session. He didn’t look well. Leslie followed him out to the car, asking him not to go, but, with his dedication, he wasn’t one to disappoint a client. It’s unclear what happened. Leslie thinks he passed out. An autopsy ruled out drugs, alcohol and heart attack.

Sokol held more than 30 world fitness records, including 52,003 sit-ups in 32 hours and 17 minutes, 30,000 jumping jacks in seven and a half hour and 5,428 crunches in an hour on his 47th birthday. “It’s just amazing what he’s done,” says Leslie, a champion race walker. “He lived every day to the fullest.” For the Sokols, life was an adventure. They delighted in hiking Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Zion and Bryce Canyon. Sokol and Alex recently went to Bear Valley together, and Alex learned to cross-country ski. Leslie enjoyed competing in races together as a family. “It’s what made us so unique and special,” she says. “I feel lucky that we had that time, but it’s unfair that it ended for Steve.” Sokol passed on his passion to his son. Alex competes in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships. He says that through racing, he wants to keep Steve’s spirit alive. AVAC owner Joe Shank enjoyed watching Sokol and Alex do deep water running in the pool. “Steve was warm and friendly,” says Shank. “He was always there with a smile on his face and a friendly hello. He’s certainly going to be missed.”

The book includes Joe’s favorite tales in collecting autographed golf balls from golfers, entertainers, sports figures and U.S. presidents.

L

Hooked on Autographs By Joe Galiardi

ife-changing moments often arise from innocuous events; their impact not fully appreciated or understood for years. I can now pinpoint mine. A lifetime collector since age 7, it became natural for me to resume collecting when I took up the wonderful game of golf in 1986. On October 25, 1989, at the Transamerica Senior Golf Championship in Napa, California, I obtained golf legend Arnold Palmer’s autograph on a golf ball, launching a collection of signed golf balls that today totals over 300 and is one of the largest in America. But this impressive collection is just part one of my story. My collection includes some of the greatest golfers who ever picked up a club such as Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman, Tom Watson, Chi Chi Rodriquez, and a Stanford University sophomore named Tiger Woods, and more. One year, at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament in Palm Desert, California, I spotted two of my boyhood idols, Johnny Lujack (Notre Dame Heisman winner 1947) and Ralph Kiner (Pittsburgh Pirates home run king) inspiring me to expand my autographed ball collection to non-golf celebrities, a roster that reads like a Who’s Who in the hallowed halls of entertainers and sports legends such as Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Evander Holyfield, Kerri Walsh, Michael Phelps, Nancy Lopez, Joe Paterno, Willie Mays, Magic Johnson, John Madden, Jim Brown, and scores more. 10 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Encouraged by an author friend to write a book about my unique collection, I embarked upon writing my first book in 2008 and brought my mass of 38,000 words to fruition in 2009. In Hooked on Autographs, I introduce the readers to the behind-the-scenes excitement of tracking down celebrities for their autographs. My hobby memoir is an unforgettable collection of anecdotes and yarns that highlight what it took for me to obtain my stockpile of celebrity signatures. In addition, Hooked on Autographs explores the golfers’ personalities and recount their personal golfing achievements. Golf lovers will revel and non-golfers will delight in reading my original and wildly fun book comprised of sixteen spirited chapters. Readers will not only come away with a better understanding and appreciation of the art of collecting, but also will revel in the near-miss antics and poignant sweep of my pursuit for the autographs. The story behind the Chi Chi Rodriquez signed ball is one of my favorites, demonstrating the patience it sometimes takes to obtain an autograph. When I decided to add Chi Chi’s autograph to my golf ball collection, my opportunity arose when the seniors returned to “Tuscany in California,” Napa, for the fall Transamerica Senior Championship at Silverado CC. I waited purposely for Chi Chi to finish his practice round on the South Course. After putting out on No. 18, Chi Chi began walking off the green when he was mobbed by autograph seekers, including myself. A very warm October day, Chi Chi

responded, “It’s too hot up here; let’s go down to that large tree where there’s shade.” All of us autograph hounds quickly bolted for the tree, with me flying faster than a bullet to get there. I was first in line to get Chi Chi’s John Hancock. As I handed Chi Chi a Titleist ball to sign, he looked at me and said, “Children, first.” Knowing how much Chi Chi loves kids, I wasn’t surprised by his kind gesture. Three or four children came forward and after Chi Chi signed the last item, I knew I was next to get his sought-after signature because I made sure not to lose my place in line. As I handed Chi Chi the ball for the second time, he stared at me again and said, “Women, next.” I had no problem with the few women autograph seekers in the crowd going before me as I was brought up to believe… ladies before gentlemen. After Chi Chi signed the last lady’s hat, it was finally my turn for Chi Chi to sign the ball. As I anxiously handed the ball to Chi Chi, he looked straight into my eyes and jokingly said, “Mexicans, next.” My eyeballs almost popped out from laughing so hard. Chi Chi also cracked up. I finally got my patiently awaited autograph from one of the game’s biggest stars and golf legend -- Chi Chi Rodriquez. Twenty-plus years in, my life-changing moment has come full circle. Inspired by that first autograph from one hero, I am now doing my part in a small way to help change for the better the lives of other heroes. I’m donated onehalf of my net proceeds to our returning severely wounded soldiers recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. My wife, Judy, and I have visited our wounded troops at Walter Reed and witnessed firsthand the financial and emotional hardship facing our wounded GIs and their families. As a vet, I take great pride in being able to financially help our wounded troops who have made great sacrifices for our freedom and safety.

Chamber Business Update

I

’d like to take thank those who attended our Almaden Business Association (ABA) groundbreaking event on March 3, 2011. Members and guests alike enjoyed an evening of “Purpose-Driven Networking” and “State of Almaden Valley” updates. As mentioned in my last article, the ABA is an off-shoot of the San Jose Silicon Valley (SJSV) Chamber of Commerce. As such, we were delighted to welcome our District 10 City Council Representative, Nancy Pyle, and Vice President of Public Policy & Communication for the SJSV Chamber, Pat Sausedo. Pyle’s comments focused on city services and changes in the Almaden and Blossom Valley area. Sausedo talked about the challenges the City is faced with this year. In addition, attendees were given the opportunity to engage in guided networking to improve the quality of their connections. As the economy continues to give business owners a rough ride, it is more important than ever that we connect with each other to form business relationships that will enable us to continue to grow. The ABA was created for just this purpose: to foster the development of relationships that allow for quality referrals across business platforms. Stay tuned for information about our next event. For information about membership, visit our website at www.almadenbiz.com, email info@almadenbiz.com, or contact Rick Gerhardt at rickg@sjchamber.com or (408) 291-5288.

ven though 2010 is history, you may still be able to trim your 2010 tax bill. Be sure you don’t overlook the following actions and deductions that could save you money.

Maximize your 2010 IRA contribution. You have until April 18, 2011, to make deductible 2010 contributions. The maximum 2010 contribution is $5,000 ($6,000 if you were 50 or older last year). If you changed jobs in 2010, make sure you didn’t have excess social security taxes withheld. Claim credit for the excess on your Form 1040 if you paid over $6,622. Look into itemizing deductions if you usually take the standard deduction. Search for allowable deductions that you might have overlooked, such as the restored 2010 deduction for state and local sales taxes in lieu of deducting state and local income taxes. Medical deductions are allowable to the extent they exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI). Don’t forget items such as eyeglasses and hearing aids. You can deduct mileage for 2010 medical appointments at 16.5¢ a mile, plus parking and toll fees. Don’t overlook tax preparation fees, safe deposit costs, and certain investment advice. They all qualify as miscellaneous deductions, subject to a 2% of AGI limit. Up to $2,500 of student loan interest is deductible whether you itemize or not. The deduction of up to $4,000 for qualified tuition and school expenses is available for 2010. Qualifying amounts for you, your spouse, and dependents may be deductible. Income limits apply. If you’re a teacher or teacher’s aide, you can deduct up to $250 for classroom supplies that you purchased with your own money. If you made energy-saving improvements to your home, check into the credit of up to 30% of your cost, subject to a $1,500 limit for the amounts spent in 2009 and 2010.

“Almaden Cares”

I have become involved with a very new Almaden organization dedicated to educating our youth and adults that “cars”, as my father used to say, “can be as deadly as a gun.” When a driver consumes alcohol and/or drugs, chances are they will kill themselves and/or others. We have had a large share of car fatalities in our little valley and “Almaden Cares” is trying to make everyone aware of this problem. We need you to talk to your kids, talk to your friends and together we can prevent tragedies from happening. You are going to be seeing our awareness campaign in Almaden. Take notice and take action.

If you would like to participate in “Almaden Cares”, in any way, please do. A little donated time would be greatly appreciated. If you have a service or talent that might be of use, just ask. We meet once a month and all are welcome. Visit www.almadencares.com. Call me and I can tell you when and where the next meeting will be. By the way, if you know of someone who would appreciate the high-level and personal real estate service I provide, please call me with their name and number or give them mine. I will be happy to follow up and take great care of them.

an you believe spring is just around the corner? Before we know it, it will be time to throw open the windows and pull out that spring wardrobe! This time of year always creates a little anxiety as we unveil our arms, legs and décolleté after a couple of seasons of hiding under heavier clothing. Our skin tends to become dull and dry and loses its sheen due to lack of moisture and the fact that we tend to ignore our skin as it is covered up. This window of time between the fading of winter and the promise of spring is perfect for preparing skin for the big reveal. At NuSilk, we offer many different treatment options to achieve that healthy glowing complexion, be it on your face, décolleté, back, arms or legs. One of our most popular treatments is SilkPeel Dermalinfusion. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. It is the only technology to provide simultaneous exfoliation, evacuation and the delivery of a condition specific topical. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion offers advanced skin care for almost every skin type and condition. As SilkPeel’s diamond tip wand passes over the skin, it removes damaged surface skin cells, evenly abrading the top layer of the skin while stimulating cell renewal and smoothing uneven texture. SilkPeel Dermalinfusion has four condition specific topical solutions to meet your needs; Lumixyl Solution- hyperpigmentation, Clarifying Formula acne, Hydrating Solution - dry skin, Vitamin C Solution - detoxification. The result is softer, more luminous skin. This treatment is non-invasive, painless and requires no downtime. This clinically proven skin resurfacing procedure can be used by itself, or in conjunction with customized chemical peels and laser treatments to address hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Once skin is rejuvenated and has regained that natural glow it is imperative that you protect that new skin with the proper SPF protection. Sunblocks have markedly improved. New preparations such as micronized titanium dioxide are less conspicuous on the skin and offer substantial protection against both UVA and UVB. Sunscreens chemically absorb UV rays, sunblocks physically deflect them. Sunscreen has long blocked UVB effectively, but until recently provided less UVA protection. New ingredients such as octylcrylene and the benzophenones have improved sunscreen’s defenses against shorter UVA rays, and the revolutionary chemical avobenzone (Parsol 1789) works against all UVA wavelengths. Come in for your complimentary skin consultation and take that first step towards Spring. - Beth Stanco, C.L.E. TM

Walter Reed Society Many organizations are performing great patriotic service to help our brave severely wounded soldiers. One in particular is the Walter Reed Society, a taxexempt charitable organization established, among other things, to ease family burdens and speed healing for the returning wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom are on the brink of financial disaster. My wonderful and vivacious sister, Rose Marie Mologne, is one of the founders of the Society based out of Washington, DC. Rose’s late husband, Lewis A. Mologne, was Major General and commanding officer of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, until his death in 1988. In 1968, Lew became Assistant Chief of General Surgery at Walter Reed. He was on the surgical team that worked desperately to save President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Before his death, Ike called Lew to his bedside to thank him and tell him how proud he was to have a fellow West Pointer as his doctor.

Challenges of “Growing Up” By Katy Carter, MA

B

eginning in middle school, children begin experiencing extensive change. We watch them physically develop and this is even more apparent in high school. Growth spurts, clothing and hairstyle changes, social changes, friendship changes, interest in dating, and so on. We need to remember, however, that teenagers (and young adults) are also not finished growing emotionally and mentally. Their brains are not developed and their bodies are raging with growth hormones and other changes. They are still under development or in transition. No child, whether a good student or a challenged student, is exempt. Maybe you notice a change in a kid who used to attend boy scouts in your garage several years ago or was your daughter’s best friend for six months in first grade when they discovered they both liked butterflies. Suddenly, this same kid is dressed in a different fashion or developed like an adult, or will not look you in the eye, and you can’t believe that your kid is even the same age, let alone asking to attend a party with this person. You are concerned. So what is a parent to do? Remember, there are no “bad kids”, just ones that sometimes make bad choices. All kids make good and bad choices at different times. It’s part of growing up. It’s an important and vital piece of human development. Individuals are faced with decisions and choices throughout life. Learning to be an adult and taking responsibility for one’s actions brings depth and maturity, as a teen or young adult blossoms into the person he or she was

meant to be. With that said, parents need to continue working with their teens, just as they did when they were children, to teach them how to evaluate, access and make good choices. This process continues into young adulthood as the choices get more difficult, the stakes get higher, and decision making and planning for college or career is lurking in the near future. Teens should learn to constantly evaluate daily decisions and to question choices their peers make. Teens should learn early in life that there is one choice and decision for each situation that is unique and right for them alone. This will never change throughout life. Each of us is a unique individual on this planet. As a parent we would like to think that if we could just weed out the bad influences and eliminate them from our teen’s life, we could eliminate the temptations and dangers as well. It is not necessarily about ridding our teen’s life of every possible bad influence or danger, but rather about preparing our teen to face the unexpected. We need to teach our teen to make solid, independent choices and decisions when we are not around to help or guide. Unfortunately, there will always be new exciting changes happening as teens are constantly evolving, exploring and stretching their independence. Tomorrow that pierced teen, dressed all in black could start dressing in all the colors of the rainbow and join the marching band and pep squad, and your teen could be the one dressed all in black with piercings and tattoos that the neighbors are shying away from. It happens.

Teens should learn to constantly evaluate daily decisions and to question choices their peers make. 22 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Try to remember when you were a teenager, many moons ago. “Cut your hair and you’ll get a job.” your Father may have said. “I’m not paying good money just for jeans that already look worn out.” said Mom. Changing your appearance and look is part of experimenting for teens as they begin to develop into the new adult they are growing up to be. Don’t panic! We’ve all heard the saying, “looks are only skin deep.” This is especially true with teens. Fashions, occasionally meant to shock, are not a true representation of the real person inside. We too often judge kids based upon an outward appearance. Some of the best-groomed, most innocent looking kids can be the strongest facilitators of peer pressure towards bad choices and bad behavior. Instead of trying to judge other teens and guide your own toward those you perceive as “good influences”, it’s best to focus on our own child’s decision making strengths and behavior. A teen with good decision making skills and inner strength will gravitate towards the right peers on their own. Your own teen is the best authority on choosing the right friends for him or her. Talking with your teen about personal choices and plans and how their friends fit into or complement these goals is a better approach and allows the teen to analyze and adjust their peer choices on their own terms. Teen rebellion and acting out are not new concepts. The trials endured during the teenage years are retold in stories as old as our grandparents. What has changed however is the level of intensity and at times damaging and self-destructive ways some teens are playing out this phase of development. Traditionally, the teenage years encompass a struggle for autonomy and independence. We grow, explore, experiment and develop our own tastes, philosophies and styles. This growth can be encouraged and supported in healthy ways if the structure and system are in place. It’s all about learning to make good choices. But not all teens have the strength of a support system to fall back on. Without a structure or support system at home or school, teens are often left to rely for support on friends who may also be in a freefall pattern. These traditional teen networks are stressed to the breaking point with the demands our high paced lifestyles require. The electronic age of communication: cell phones, texting, social networking sites, all step up the speed with which ideas, information and news travels among teenagers. Peer pressure and the need to fit in are heightened by the influx of information and teen-targeted television dramas. The lightening fast communication used among teenagers, often done in an anonymous fashion, has sped up response times for teens to instantaneous. Decisions can be made or ideas processed in much less time than was previously spent. This can sometimes lead to wrong or uninformed choices. That is why it is more important than ever for parents to connect with their teen and to reinforce and strengthen the decision making process with them. This O’Connor is the greatest gift a parent can ever give their child. It will serve them Becky well in life. Peers and friendships have always been a source of influence – both good and bad- for growing teens in the decades before 2011. Teenagers are spreading their wings, experimenting and trying new things as they should be in this developmental stage of life, but they are also learning to make choices and learning the consequences of those choices. Teen decision-making process and judgment development often scares parents. While we revel in the newly developing young adult we see, most of us also wish we could sometimes put them safely back into their cribs at night. But as that’s not likely to happen, we need to arm them with the best tools we possibly can to face the world with confidence and engagement. This is the job we signed on for when we first became parents. Thanks to Almaden Valley Girls’ Teen Group facilitated by therapist Dayna Reres, MA, MFTi. (Dayna has been with AVCS for 3 years and currently works as a counselor at Leland High School in addition to serving individual clients in our AVCS clinic.) Dayna hand-selected and invited these girls to join her newly forming girls group last fall in order to get feedback from local high schools and teens. This enables AVCS and Dayna to establish more effective means of communication with teens and prioritize the real issues facing kids on campus. These girls have been so successful in establishing a productive focus group that they were asked back for a second session this winter. The girls represent both Pioneer as well as Leland High Schools.

Autism

D

uring the 1990’s Autism was gaining attention by the medical community and general public because there appeared to be an abrupt increase in the rate of Autism cases in the western world. Autism was ripe for a controversy because it brought together the perfect storm of young children afflicted with a disorder that has no known cause and parents desperately looking for something or someone to turn to for answers and a cure. Along came Andrew Wakefield who fed on the fears of these parents but also seemed to offer an answer. In 1998 a respected medical journal, The Lancet published a study by Wakefield, a British physician, which suggested that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine was the cause of autism in children. That article set off a firestorm of controversy, which now, 13 years later, is finally coming to an end. The publicity surrounding this paper fueled the anti-vaccine movement. A small but vocal minority lead by celebrities such as Jenny McCarthy (who, in case you did not know, has no formal medical training) began an assault on vaccines which led families to lose faith in not only the MMR vaccine but all vaccines which many medical professionals believe has contributed to the return of: polio in Minnesota, several out breaks of measles in this country, and the current epidemic of whooping cough in California. Over the subsequent years more than 25 studies were performed worldwide which showed conclusively that there is no scientific or epidemiologic link between MMR and autism. Despite this overwhelming evidence to the contrary, some continued to believe in the link between MMR and autism. Then, starting in 2004, Wakefield’s world began to unravel. It was revealed that Wakefield had not disclosed that a British legal group who was suing vaccine manufacturers on behalf of families with autistic children funded his study. This led to the other researchers in the study to rescind their support for the paper, and more scrutiny followed. It was found that the medical records of the children in his study had been falsified to support his claims, that many of the children had been subjected to multiple unnecessary procedures, and that Wakefield had financial interest in the development of an “Autism safe” vaccine. It was these findings that lead to, in 2010, Wakefield losing his medical license, a full retraction of the paper by The Lancet with editor saying, “It’s the most appalling catalog and litany of some the most terrible behavior in any research and is therefore very clear that it has to be retracted,” and an ongoing investigation of fraud. So at long last, it has been revealed what the medical community has known all along and what the legitimate medical research had shown, that Wakefield’s claims are without any merit and that there never was a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. Perhaps the most unfortunate fact about this fiasco is that, the millions of dollars and countless hours over the last 13 years spent to investigate the validity of Wakefield’s false claims could have been spent searching for the real cause and a real treatment for autism.

Gearing up for Their 2nd Annual Broomstick Ball

S

ilicon Valley Cares (SVC), a nonprofit serving Santa Clara County, announced it’s 2nd annual Broomstick Ball to be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the beautiful Dolce-Hayes Mansion in San Jose. With a sold out crowd, last year’s gala exceeded expectations. Elaborately costumed guests generously contributed time and funds to benefit local non-profits, while enjoying great food, music, entertainment, dancing and more. The 501c3 organization, founded by Kelly Dippel, a commercial real estate advisor with Studley Commercial, is starting the year in style. Dippel, named one of “2011’s Women of Influence in Silicon Valley” by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, will be honored at an award ceremony at the Santa Clara Convention Center on April 14th. She was nominated by her peers and selected by a Women of Influence committee. The purpose of SVC is to raise funds for non-profit agencies and organizations which provide ongoing services to children, teens, homeless, as well as emergency and crises situations within Santa Clara County. SVC membership has been busy selecting this year’s beneficiaries. Almaden Counseling Service (dedicated to supplying low cost counseling services to those in need to over 40 zip codes), Bill Wilson Center (committed to ensuring that every youth has necessary services to become healthy, self-

sufficient adults), CARE - Companion Animal Rescue Effort (dedicated to caring for and adopting out displaced dogs and puppies to loving homes) and Parents Helping Parents (offering educational programs, health services, and support networks for children and adults with special needs) are the deserving non-profits selected for funding this year. “Silicon Valley Cares is structured as a membership organization, bringing dynamic women together throughout the Silicon Valley who are committed to making a significant difference in our community.” says Dippel. “We grew to a network of over 70 business women within the first six months of the organization’s inception.” The inaugural Broomstick Ball was conceived as a way to bring the Silicon Valley community together for an evening of networking, compassion and entertainment, and to raise funds for local charities. After last year’s success, SVC is more committed than ever to supporting local charities. The Broomstick Ball is a costume-encouraged evening including dinner, dancing, casino, silent auction, music and entertainment. For more information on the Broomstick Ball and Silicon Valley Cares, visit www.siliconvalleycares.org.

Dining at Nick’s on Main, Los Gatos

y customers are welcome like family.” Says Nick Difu, proprietor and chef of Nick’s on Main, an American Bistro located at 35 East Main Street in Los Gatos. The camaraderie of the customers and the employees was apparent and extended to fellow customers. Nick purposely creates a warm, intimate family atmosphere, keeping tables close together to encourage customers to mingle. His philosophy worked well, as we did make a friend at the next table before our meal was complete. The talented and experienced entrepreneur served a tantalizing fare, mentioning the menu doesn’t deviate too much too often, as he has many regulars that expect to find their favorite flavorful dish prepared to suit their palate.

I was very impressed, for instance, by the “Loch Duart” salmon with Dungeness crab over lemon risotto and sautéed asparagus, and definitely envision returning to experience that succulent entre once again. The pheasant, as well, was a treat beyond measure. The most unique part of the Nick’s experience, was interestingly a meal once considered quite common. I didn’t venture to prepare it for my children in my adult life, from sheer overindulgence. I was incredibly surprised to find that I enjoyed eating a meal Nick entitles Nani’s meatloaf. Who would have thought? The flavorsome spices delighted us and the highly pleasant consumption of this dish, erased the status quo meatloaf concept I had prior to trying Nick’s meatloaf. Nick’s menu is accompanied by a tasty wine list, sure to please – especially the long list of reds. For a yummy time, we definitely recommend visiting this quaint dining establishment.

You Said What?

I

t’s often said that what makes America great is the willingness to allow free speech even when the content is objectionable to most all Americans. Flag burning is typically cited as an example of protected free speech falling into this category. Now, recent court cases are testing just how far the courts will go to protect First Amendment rights, and one recently decided case will no doubt leave many with feelings of anger and outrage, while leaving others with immense comfort that free speech is still a deeply protected right. In March 2006, a church leader and six family members belonging to his small congregation decided to picket the funeral of a soldier who had been recently killed in Iraq. This congregation “celebrated” the soldier’s death with signs reading “Thank God for Dead Soldiers,” “God hates the USA,” “Thank God for 9/11,” and “God Hates You.” Although the soldier’s father prevailed in the lower court (winning a $5 million damage award), the appeals court reversed on First Amendment grounds, and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld that appeals court decision, in an 8-1 vote, holding that the father of the soldier was not allowed to sue for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Generally, matters of public concern are “at the heart of First Amendment’s protection” while private matters receive less rigorous First Amendment protections. Given that the church protest was performed in a public place on matter of public concern (and generally out of the eyesight of the soldier’s father), the speech was ultimately granted protection. Specifically stating that the government cannot prohibit speech “simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable”. The Court went on to reiterate that in public debate, we must tolerate insulting, and even outrageous, speech as part of protecting the rights granted by the First Amendment. But not all speech is protected. Since the Vietnam era, wearing black armbands at school to protest the war has been protected as a form of free speech, but when students unfurled a banner reading “BONG HITS 4 JESUS” on school property, that type of speech was found to be unprotected, and the school was allowed to safeguard students from speech that could be regarded as encouraging illegal drug use. Similarly, obscene speech and commercial speech (speech by a person or company for purposes of making a profit) both receive less than the full protection of the First Amendment. Also, lawsuits for defamation and infliction of emotional distress are both based on the idea that certain forms of speech remain unprotected – often, those cases are determined by factors such as intent, whether the speech is stated as an opinion or fact, and if as a “fact,” whether that fact is really true or not. While the truth will typically set you free, statements of false information as “facts” will not receive First Amendment protection. So before you yell “Fire!” in a crowded movie house (or “Movie!” in a crowded fire house), consider the implications of that speech... just because you’ve said it out loud doesn’t mean that it’s a protected form of speech.

The Essence of Self Defense

W

hen you hear the words, ‘self defense’, what image pops into your mind? Is it a woman thwarting an attacker with her purse? Is it a student defending himself from the schoolyard bully? Is it a skilled martial artist defending him or herself from an attacker? At one time or another, most experience one of these scenarios, but really... what exactly is Self Defense? Self defense is protecting yourself when YOU are the ONLY one able to assist YOU! I always encourage my students to ask for help if they have the ability. Kids should recognize that parents, teachers, coaches and other authority figures are there to help. For adults, law enforcement is still the best means for gaining assistance in a physical attack. Yes, it is OK to ask for help. Though an attack is always possible, I encourage students to train for other reasons than defense against the hypothetical attacker. In my experiences, physical attacks are limited. It’s not the old west where we all walk around with our side arms. There are more common forms of attack; such as, child obesity, low self-esteem, premature quitting, low motivation, and lack of hope. I have seen these life obstacles attack students at a far greater frequency than that of any bully, mugger, or attacker. What is the best self defense technique? Though I love the “side kick” and “palm strike”, there is no golden technique. Every self defense situation is unique, even if similar scenarios. Environment, height, weight, motivation and other aspects will skew a typical event.

What CAN you work on to assist in ANY self defense situation? The answer is confidence. As stated, not all attacks are physical. Some are mental, emotional or even self -imposed. The best way to combat attacks is through confidence. Studies have shown attackers are more apt to pick a victim demonstrating low confidence, regardless of strength or size. Confidence is a dynamic life skill. At any given moment, confidence is either increasing or falling. We gain confidence from our successes and we often lose confidence in our failures. The first step I teach in developing confidence is guarding your feelings. When you feel angry, sad, or weak, practice finding the ‘good’ in the situation. This is important as your feelings create your type of thoughts. Next, make your thoughts empower you, rather than affirm a perceived weakness or trigger anger. Once your thoughts enhance your perceived value, you will no longer be held at the mercy of a given situation. As you experience successes and gain greater inner- strength, the result will provide you with your desired outcome. Finally, success will assist in the molding of your attitude, propelling you to be able to ascend any self defense situation. I call this black belt confidence, so start developing your confidence today.
