95120editor ’m extremely excited when I look at the lineup for this magazine issue. It has been a while since we have included travel options in 95120 Magazine but we have a new relationship with Hoberg’s Club Resort and they have chosen to present their beautiful property membership opportunities to our readership. The resort is tucked away in Lake County near the largest natural lake in California, Clear Lake (home of the Clear Lake Hitch and Prickly Sculpin) nestled amongst Mount Konocti. Whether you want to get back to nature, where Tule Elk and well over 100 different avian species abound, or just get away and enjoy occasional concerts or trips to their spa coming this summer, a visit is welcome. Before vacation season however, we have important upcoming District 10 Elections. In this issue you can learn about candidate Leslie Reynolds. Please take the time to understand her values, background, experience, and charter by visiting www.lesliereynolds10.com. Included also is a business ad from Johnny Khamis, also a District 10 candidate. Next issue, we hope to include candidate “Getting to Know You” articles. I’m excited to inform you that 95120 Magazine and the Almaden Business Association will be holding a candidate forum in April. This will be a chance for you to meet your candidates one-on-one and hear them speak. This anticipated EDITOR PHOTO

Unwined Wine Bar & Shop has been acquired by a local family, Rory and Anna Chitwood, and a former employee Danielle Metz whose motto currently is “business as usual.” Learn about them in this issue, enjoy their great offer and invitation to visit, and stay tuned for their upcoming plans. I welcome many new businesses advertising in this issue such as Almaden resident Sami Im (Marriage & Family Therapist), Blacy’s Jewelry Store, Cloud 9 Limousine, My College Hunt (Take the stress out of your students application process), Burrell School Winery, Shoe Candy of LG, Aldo’s Restaurant and Almaden’s very own Tacos Al Pastor. Please support these generous advertisers as the opportunity presents itself. Lastly, please enjoy our new 95120 “Clip-n-Save” coupons on page 18. The Reggio Emilia Approach at Creative Minds CDC

bout two and a half years ago 95120 Magazine ran a story about a determined entrepreneur and Reggio Emilia educational approach advocate named Richa Kapur who had just launched Creative Minds Child Development Center. At the time Richa declared that small student-toteacher ratios in early development was not just for Google employees anymore. We recently revisited the Creative Minds CDC campus and proudly witnessed Richa’s academic vision in practice. Every classroom was in use and as we toured the colorful facility, we were pleasantly greeted by multiple smiling teachers in each grade level. It was apparent both the instructors and the students were having a great time, and we enjoyed meeting some of the adorable children as they showed us their truly impressive creations. Richa, Creative Minds Child Development Center founder and director, has been a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) member for 20 plus years. The NAEYC members are teachers committed to providing quality and excellence to early childhood education. Richa (who earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology, with a focus on Play Therapy, from University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development from Delhi University in India, and had over a decade of experience with the Head Start program, prior to opening her own Reggio Emilia-based child education facility in Oregon) has successfully implemented her blueprint to achieve educational excellence here in San Jose. 06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

We further explore the popularity of Richa Kapur, Creative Minds CDC, and their Reggio Emilia teaching technique, by sharing the parent points of view. “Creative Minds CDC is a breath of fresh air. I have a background in Early Childhood Education and it was not easy to find a philosophy I supported. Creative Minds has a perfect balance of social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth opportunities. The children are allowed to really put their hands into it and explore possibilities without judgment. They are not just memorizing information but retaining knowledge long-term. As a parent and teacher I believe early experiences need to support the “whole” child. Creative Minds understands a child’s individual background, cultural values and beliefs. To incorporate multiculturalism in the classroom they do not use a commercialized approach to celebrations but instead encourage family participation. I have spent time working with some of the teachers and children. I am very impressed with the way the teachers interact and communicate.

“Creative Minds has an exceptional, deeply caring staff who work closely with each individual child to ensure they are learning, growing and thriving. The curriculum balances play with learning. Having been in the field of education for over 10 years, I can sincerely say that my child’s teacher is an excellent teacher and the Director is an expert in child development. Over the last year, I have watched my child grow tremendously under the care of Creative Minds; my daughter loves going to school. Every morning, she is excited about what she will learn at school and looks forward to seeing her teacher and her friends. As a mom, it gives me peace of mind to know that my child attends a school where she is truly loved and cared for by the staff”. —Sehba Ali Zya & Asha’s mom, Chief Academic Officer, KIPP Bay Area Schools

“We have two children enrolled at CM. Braden (18 mos) is in the infant room, and Madeline (3.5 yrs) in the preschool room. Maddy was one of the first children at CM. She has loved her time there. The teachers have really made a connection with both kids. When I drop her off in the AM she insists on visiting all of them to say good morning and show them her outfit or toy that she took into school. And as siblings tend to do our son follows her along on the AM visits. Having them be familiar with all the rooms and teachers has made transitions from one room to another very smooth. Prior to joining CM we looked at several (approx 10) daycares. Some of them we literally walked out of in shock and close to tears. Both kids have developed close friendships with the other classmates. Maddy often has play dates with her classmates outside of school. My wife and I are confident in the teachers and program and feel totally at ease dropping our children off each morning.” —Eric Berg Madeline and Braden’s dad, Staffing Manager

Infant room: Focus is on attachment and bonding, primary care providers (consistent person assigned to same set of children) so that 80% of the time there is consistency in care, developing trusting relationships and exploring the environment. Ratio is 1:3.

“Daniel came to Creative Minds CDC when he was 20 months old, and has been a student there for about a year and a half now. He started out in the toddler classroom with Teacher Michelle, and is now in preschool with Teacher Kate. He has really thrived at CM, both socially and intellectually. The environment there is stimulating yet nurturing. Daniel loves to go to school, loves his teachers, has made lots of friends, and has learned so much about how to be and about how to learn. We really appreciate the hands-on activities and the Reggio-based approach that the teachers implement at Creative Minds. Daniel regularly surprises us with comments about trees, animals, numbers, and all kinds of other things (we had no idea he knew so much!). The teachers are very professional and caring with the children, and they welcome visits and input from family members. In addition, the teachers listen when parents express thoughts about their child’s needs. We feel, and more importantly, Daniel feels, appreciated and important in the CM community. We have been very impressed and delighted with our experience at Creative Minds and highly recommend this school.” —Robert Bernard Daniel’s dad, Independence High School, Music Teacher

They are sincere, genuine and find the humor in day-to-day situations. My preschool daughter is always smiling and laughing. The teachers and environment have taught her self-awareness, intrinsic motivation, and self-confidence. My family is so blessed to have found this school and it is a privilege to support Creative Minds CDC.” —Jennifer Rabe Maybelle and Emmaline’s mom, Child Care Director, stay-at-home mom

fter 25 years of doing business as the Almaden Chiropractic Center on Camden Avenue, we made a change. A change that we feel will help us better take care of our patients. We are immensely grateful to all those who have been patients, and continue to be members of our practice. On December 15th Dr.’s Carl and Philip Dieter, along with Dr. Charles Decker opened Almaden Chiropractic and Wellness. Located at 5570 Sanchez Drive, Suite #100, San Jose, Ca 95123 off of Blossom Hill Rd. Dr.’s Gary Beytin and Cynthia Guillet simultaneously opened Almaden Family Chiropractic located at 1711 Branham Lane, Suite #A12, San Jose, Ca 95118, near Camden and Highway 85. The Almaden Chiropractic Center was family owned and operated for all of those 25 years. We considered each and every person that came through our door as part of our chiropractic family, and we will continue to do so in our new format. Both of our clinics will continue to offer state of the art technological advancements, along with our patient-centered approach to your health and wellness challenges. As with any change, comes growth opportunities. We have added digital radiography to our clinics. This offer’s us better opportunities as primary points of entry into the health care system. We can now send you home with a digital copy of your films for your own records. As always stay tuned for other advancements and alternatives to provide better patient care. Feel free to contact either clinic to experience Chiropractic and a healthier lifestyle. We welcome phone and email inquiries to help you determine if you are a candidate for chiropractic care. Antibiotics

I

n September of 2011 the CDC reported that antibiotic prescribing rates for kids 14 years and younger was down 25% since the early 1990’s. That’s the good news. Unfortunately, nearly 58% of antibiotics prescribed for children are still deemed “unnecessary.” That translates into nearly 10 million unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics written each year. So where does that leave us? This is an easy question to ask, but a much harder question to answer. Physicians and patients alike want to reduce antibiotic use and generally we feel that others should as well. Yet when it comes to personal use, we often feel differently. Certainly, it is nice to think we use antibiotics (or other medications) only “when it is absolutely necessary.” However, in some situations delaying treatment may lead to the need for a longer course of antibiotics. In the most severe cases it may lead to serious complications such as hospitalization or possibly death. As a parent, I understand the emotional security that an antibiotic provides and the welcome convenience of having that prescription inhand to prevent the need for a return visit to the doctor. As a pediatrician, there are times when it is obvious to me that an antibiotic is not necessary. And, there are times when it is obvious that, in fact, an antibiotic is necessary or appropriate. However, there remains a large gray zone where it’s not clear whether or not an antibiotic is appropriate or beneficial. In such cases there are many factors to take in to consideration. Some are technical, such as the severity of the symptoms and the age of the child. And others are personal in nature, such as salvaging an upcoming trip to Disneyland. Each has its merit. In those cases, physicians and patients need to work together to come up with a plan that works well for everyone. Which brings us to what this issue is really about… communication. When researching the topic of antibiotic overuse, there is one predominant theme; patients complain that physicians prescribe too many antibiotics and physicians complain that patients too frequently demand antibiotics for conditions that don’t warrant it. At the core of this dilemma is the age-old problem…a lack of communication between physicians and patients. Physicians need to do a better job explaining when antibiotics are appropriate and when they are not. Patients need to ask questions and express their opinion. Because, while many of us are guilty of thinking we have superhuman powers, the reality is we can’t read minds. It is likely that we are wrong sometimes. So when a doctor recommends a treatment I encourage you to ask three questions: 1. What are the benefits? 2. What are the risks? 3. What are the alternatives? And if you can’t remember that just ask, “Do I really need this?”

The Government May Have Your Files... Not you.

I

magine you have all of your treasured family possessions in a Public Storage space. Now suppose that the government learns someone is distributing illegal movies out of one or more storage spaces across the country, so they deny you access to your possessions indefinitely… and maybe forever. Or imagine that you have all your family photos and personal files on a disk. The government knocks on your door, and because they suspect there might be infringing material on it, they take it from you right then and there, and then they tell you that you may not ever get it back (regardless of whether there really is infringing material). 180 million registered users of a company named Megaupload are now facing that scenario. Megaupload is an online storage site which hosts “cyberlockers” where users pay a monthly fee to rent space on a remote hard drive either for backup purposes or for filesharing (where they can download, or allow others to download, their large files directly from any location). Megaupload’s site has recently been shut down by the U.S. Department of Justice, alleging that Megaupload failed to fully delete certain copyright infringing content. This accompanied criminal prosecutions against at least five executives. Unfortunately, that site shutdown leaves all 180 million registered users out in the cold – none of them are being allowed access to any of their files, which included personal files, family photos, and business files. As cloud computing has become more common, hosting services rely on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which provides a “safe harbor” to websites that allow third parties to post content to them. Essentially, so long as the host site promptly takes down any content after being notified it is infringing on copyrights, the hosting service has no liability. Companies like Google’s YouTube have successfully defended themselves based on this safe harbor. However, Megaupload seems to be losing this battle without even having a chance to defend itself or its users. Without question, some level of copyright infringement occurs on Megaupload, just like it does on virtually every large file hosting and filesharing site. But the question some ask is whether the proper target of that infringement is the hosting site, or the posters themselves. In this case, all of Megaupload users have had their rights to their digital files taken away, arguably without any due process (which are legal processes specifically put in place to protect individuals from government abuse). You may recall that, about 10 years ago, Napster was closed down after being found liable for creating a site that allowed people to share music. The basis of that lawsuit was that, even though users could share music they created themselves, it was primarily a site where people were sharing other artists’ music in violation of copyright law. But that was a private action, and Napster was not shut down until a full trial. In the case of Megaupload, the shutdown is before a trial, and it’s a government action. Some might argue the government’s zeal to protect against copyright infringement is commendable, while others might argue that the impact on individual liberty is too high. The legal impact of these government actions and their impact on cloud based service providers is yet to be seen. Services that are traditionally used more for business purposes are likely to be safe from unexpected government seizure, but services on which users post movies and music are more likely to see higher scrutiny. For the near term, I’d suggest a physical backup even if you use cloud services as well!

o here we are, 2012! How is it going so far? I find the end of December to be funny. How often do you hear, “This is the year I get in shape, watch what I eat, lose some pounds, save more, spend less, and stop drinking,” only to see these declarations broken by the Rose Bowl Parade. All of these resolutions sound nice, but are these mere words we use to make ourselves feel better? Hey, at least we are thinking about doing the right things... right? The first step to achieving your resolutions is setting measurable and accountable goals. For example, I will get in shape by walking ½ mile every other day for the month of January, or I will not have any alcohol for the month of January. These are both measurable and accountable. Goals are great because they lead us in a direction. Goals can be a map to get you from ‘whom you are’ to ‘whom you want to be.’ The problem with goals is that they can be short lived. We want to make life-changing shifts that enhance us as people. We also often make goals that are just out of reach. So, we have intention. Intention is simply what you desire or dream to happen. It is grasping fantasy and bringing it to reality. Like a movie; however, not any movie, your movie. In your movie, believe that you are the producer, director and lead actor. If you don’t like the story, CUT! Too much drama, horror, teen angst, Twilight, not a problem... CUT! Refocus the camera, re-cast, and shoot a different scene. You have the power to create your masterpiece. To start playing your part, I suggest simple affirmations. Affirmations are statements that bring the body into alignment with your intention.

“I am healthy, wealthy and wise.” “I am physically strong, mentally sharp, emotionally stable and spiritually balanced.” “I am always in the right place at the right time for my highest good.” “I am in service to others”.

Believe it and commit to it. It is amazing how quickly we can shift our situation, just by changing our mindset. I have seen miraculous changes in my life and the lives of my students. Namely students that have gone from shy to confident, from sick to healthy, and from wild to displaying discipline. They all started with a belief, an intention and a commitment to the process. I would like to assist you in reaching your intentions. I invite the members of this community to train in our school for 2 weeks on me (and I will include a new uniform). No cost, no obligation, no hidden anything. Just train. If Pilates is more your workout, come join us for the same, courtesy of Almaden Pilates. Join us in making 2012 the most amazing and memorable of years!
