This historic oven of more than 120 years old, beckoned me for a photograph. Legend has it, that once apon a time, this relic was used to feed dozens of Almaden Miners and their families. I could almost smell the sweet tones of fresh bread baking as my thoughts drifted away to a day gone by. To share its existence with you is a thrill and an honor.

WELCOME 2011!

E

nergized after the long holiday season, it is time to focus on the New Year, improvement, and as my son calls it, the pursuit of happiness. I think putting some effort into improving organization and improving your health and fitness can save time by making your schedule more efficient and increase pleasure in your life because being active on a regular basis improves your health. This accomplishment will allow you to spend more time on emotionally beneficial tasks. If it isn’t apparent, I took a yoga class recently and enjoyed the focus on breathing techniques and self-improvement. I included a snippet of what some of your fellow Almaden neighbors are doing to keep in shape – from classes and hobbies to sports (p20). Through the years I have met many unique and fun individuals in Almaden and I continually meet more. For instance, I recently met a retired sports player, who stayed involved in the sport he chose as a career, for many years afterwards in a teaching capacity. The Almaden community is full of many unique individuals. With that said, I announce this issue, we begin our “Voted-In” contest once again. You will be able to nominate a 95120 resident who is a member on the website www.95120lifestyle. com to win full-page coverage in the next 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine issue to write about hobbies, charities, family, school or other positive community involvement. The last and first time we offered this contest, we had 9,000 independent votes. There were some really involved, impressive people entered. Let’s see what happens this round of voting. An email will be sent out to all website members requesting a nominee. There is a very limited time to respond. Once we have up to three nominees, the voting begins – again with a time limit (which will be announced within the contest start informational email) to determine the winner. Ensure the

person you want to nominate is a member on the website before then and then stay tuned at the end of January for the online email which will be sent to all members, announcing the contest. As we wound down the year, I was impressed over the holiday season with the Power in Purple ladies launching their first Teddy Bear Tea Party to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. These Los Alamitos Elementary parents held a precious event at the Almaden Country Club December 12th. Make sure to read about it and view photos in the WebExtras! section (p30) and mark your calendars for Tea in 2011! I hope you enjoyed a memorable holiday season and were able to be around caring family members and friends. Our holidays were filled with love and happiness and I am thankful for that. I look forward to see what is in store for 2011, for as they say, “The best is yet to come!” Read the Save the Date calendar (p30) if you are interested in getting involved in local events, and don’t hesitate to send me items to add in a future issue. I am interested to see how Almaden families are preparing their youth for improved academics, as well as determining college and career direction. Tell us your story! I am proud to welcome accomplished writer Lorraine Gabbert to the 95120 Lifestyle Magazine team. Look for her innagural story regarding Strive for College (p20).

“Not Words but Deeds”

The school, the fashion show, the volunteers, the cause.

A

Catholic woman named Nano (short for Honora) Nagle, born to a wealthy family in Ballygriffin Ireland in 1718, was sent to France to be educated, as education was not allowed in Ireland unless one converted to the Church of Ireland. The penal code (laws imposed under British rule) at the time prohibited the education of Irish Catholic children. While enjoying the good life in Paris, Nano often noticed her sister Ann helping the poor. When she truly began to pay attention to the less well off, she was shocked. After a progression of losses - her father, sister and mother - Nano joined the convent. It was short-lived, however, as she felt compelled to return to County Cork (a southern Irish county later fittingly nicknamed “The Rebel County”) to courageously (defying the law and risking everything) hold a secret class in a rented room to educate poor Catholic children. She expanded through her own contributions and money from other parties, to have 7 schools containing 400 children – 5 girl’s schools and 2 boy’s. Nano, who also helped the poor and sick in the evenings, was joined by other women and began the Sisters of Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1775, which years later, was deemed a religious order by the Pope in 1800 called the Union of Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary also known as The Presentation Sisters. These sisters are the same group who came to California in 1854 and founded Presentation High School in 1962. Their spirit and philosophy continue on, as even today, volunteers gather to raise money for

individuals to attend the school on scholarship. We now focus on Mollie Tobias and Patti Rottjakob of Almaden Valley who are currently Chairing the 2011 Annual Fashion Show to be held April 8th at the Santa Clara Marriott Hotel. I have had the pleasure of seeing Mollie Tobias in action, as we volunteered together in the past, when she served her 2-year term as Williams Elementary School, PTA President beginning in 2004. She also held many other positions, including VP of Volunteers. She was also a key implementer of Project Cornerstone at Williams, during 2004-2007 and Bret Harte 20032007, and involved in other programs such as ABC Parent reading to students, led parent study groups, coordinated character awards, student of the month and monthly teacher luncheons. Mollie was also actively involved with Almaden Valley Women’s Club (AVWC) from 1996 to 2001 and is currently a St. Anthony’s Liturgy Board member and coordinator of Liturgical Ministers. Patti Rottjakob also volunteered at St. Anthony’s as a religious instructor for 10 years and is now a Eucharistic Minister. She is also a member of the AVWC since 2004 and served as chair on a variety of festival committees, as well as, holding position of VP of Programs. She is a member of the National Charity League which is a mother and daughter philanthropy organization serving our local community. She joined in 2003 serving as a grade level adviser then VP, then President Elect/Parliamentarian and currently is the Chapter President. Patti is also involved with an annual tennis fundraiser for Eastfield Ming Quong, raising money for foster children.

While Presentation is committed to accepting a range of academic abilities, each year 100 percent of the graduating class goes on to college. Statistic from www.pres-net.com.

At Presentation High School, Patti has been on the Parent Board for 3 years – as Treasurer, President and currently as Parliamentarian. Patti and Mollie have both gained plenty of experience with the Presentation fashion show. Although Mollie has been involved with the event since 2004, the two women started working together as production chairs for 2 years in 2008, then business chairs and this year they are chairing the entire event. Presentation’s Fashion Show committee, which is a branch of the Development Department, plans this event whose proceeds benefit the Financial Aid Fund, insuring every girl that desires a Presentation High School (with 815 students – about 10% of which are from Almaden) education is given the opportunity. The last few years the show raised between $130,000.00 to $150,000.00. The planners realize they may have a challenging economy on their hands, but say, “We’re still doing a lot of good for those that need help with tuition! We work with many fashion partners, most from Valley Fair, a few from Santana Row, Santa Clara and some other stores from Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen. We make our money on the dinner and lunch show tickets, raffles and a variety of fundraisers throughout the school year. We do not receive any commission from clothing sales, although many of our partners offer discounts to the students or fashion show attendees.”

Proceeds from Presentation’s Annual Fashion Show benefit the Financial Aid Fund, insuring that every girl that desires a Presentation education is given the opportunity. The last few years the show raised between $130,000.00 to $150,000.00. This year’s event will be held Friday, April 8th, at the Santa Clara Marriott Hotel.

When asked why are you involved on a Becky O’Connor

personal level, Mollie answered, “I volunteer for the Fashion Show because it is an awesome opportunity to help the Pres community. First, and most importantly, the proceeds allow students, no matter their financial background, to learn, grow and develop into successful young women in a caring and supportive atmosphere. Secondly, by being involved with the Fashion Show, I am part of the bigger school community, working with fellow moms and dads, building community through a worthy cause. Thirdly, it is fun! I enjoy getting to know everyone while using the talents God gave me to make the world a better place!” Mollie feels she has gained valuable work experience while working on the show, as well as making friendships that will last a lifetime. The year-round planning and bi-monthly Executive Board meetings (which turn into weekly meetings 4 months prior to the event), meticulously focus on each detail of show production from logo to vendor selection. This year, they expect to sell over 650 lunch tickets, 400 formal dinner tickets, as well as, over 300 student tickets for Gallery Seating during the dinner show. “This year we are again inviting young alums and have a special section reserved for them!” shares Mollie. “If you take kids others have written-off and care about them and push them, they can achieve at high levels,” Michael J. Carter. Strive for College Founder

A story by Lorraine Gabbert

Strive for College

is more than good advice; it changes lives.

I

f you take kids others have written off and care about them and push them, they can achieve at high levels.” It’s this belief that led Michael J. Carter to create the Strive for College (Strive) mentoring partnership between university and high school students. Through Strive, high school students from low-income communities receive counseling support from the spring of their junior year to the spring of their senior year, guiding them through the process of applying to, enrolling in and paying for four-year colleges and universities. Carter was raised in Almaden. His father was an attorney, his mother a stayat-home mom. He attended Almaden Country School, Holy Spirit School and Bellarmine College Preparatory. Then, he transferred to Prospect High School for his junior year and was confronted not only with the funding disparity between private and public schools, but also college-oriented guidance. As his school’s sole recipient of a full-merit scholarship to prestigious Washington University in Saint Louis, Carter realized these differences affected lives. Although many of his peers had both the grades and test scores to attend four-year colleges, they lacked the direction to navigate the complex process of college admissions. “There are many Americans who have abilities who are not being given the educational opportunities they deserve,” says Joseph Eugene Stiglitz, recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. “This is the problem of access. If you look at the socio-economic groups from which we draw our students, it’s almost entirely from the top.” 10 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

In fact, only three percent of students attending the nation’s top 146 colleges come from the lowest income quartile and while two-thirds of students from the top income quartile enroll in a four-year college, only one-fifth of students from the bottom income quartile do so. In 2009, Congress identified 400,000 low-income high school students whose grades and test scores made them eligible to attend four-year colleges but never had that opportunity. Carter vowed to change that. “If you could provide large numbers of high school students with helpful advice through the admissions process,” he says, “over time, you could help hundreds and thousands of kids achieve better futures and more productive lives.” While interning for a venture capital firm and working at Google, Carter became obsessed with the idea. It was all he talked about. “My mom was first-generation and grew up with fewer resources,” says Carter. “My grandfather told me, ‘You don’t understand how lucky you have it.’ I realized how powerful education is and thought about how I could give back this tremendous gift.” After successfully guiding a few friends through college enrollment, Carter realized how challenging applying to college can be and was motivated to help others through the process. For his pilot program, Carter targeted Eskridge High School in Wellston, Missouri; an inner-city school where he could make the greatest difference.

He devised a curriculum and armed with funding from an Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program service scholarship and a team of 30 students from Washington University, he set to work. In 2006, only 1 out of 30 Eskridge graduates attended college. Two years later, with help from Strive, 24 of 27 graduating seniors enrolled in four-year colleges or universities and more than half received financial aid and scholarships. “There is a different spirit in this school about setting goals and wanting to go to college,” says Charles Brown, Superintendent of the Wellston School District. “There is no question in my mind that [Strive for College] has made a difference. It has been almost miraculous.” Carter is buoyed by these changes but remains frustrated. “How many of those 29 students who didn’t attend college in 2006 had earned the right to go through their test scores and GPAs?” he says. “But, they didn’t have anyone to advise them. It’s a waste of talent for them and the economy.” As a senior in high school, Veronica Carrillo thought that the best way to assist her parents was to get a full-time job right out of high school. “College felt so unreachable,” she says, “especially without someone to guide me.” Carrillo, now a San Jose State University student, became a Strive mentor because she wished someone had been there to help her. “What you see at Strive,” says Carter, “is that many of the mentors had adverse backgrounds themselves or had experiences that made them want to give back.” The near-peer connection is also influential. One student told Carter that if he could go to college, so could she. After a couple of his friends started Strive chapters at their colleges, along with students who learned about Strive from its web site, Carter realized the program had enormous potential. Realizing he’d require funding, he reviewed Forbes 400 List and networked like crazy. His efforts paid off and he received donations equaling $200,000. The program had taken wing. Strive currently includes chapters at 10 universities including San Jose State University, Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania. Carter is working to change the culture of high schools to make college seem appealing, affordable and possible for all students. He hopes to see Strive become a national movement assisting hundreds of thousands of students to attend college and break the cycle of poverty. “Strive ignited a dialogue about college at Del Mar [High School],” says Rhonda Farber, Superintendent of Campbell Union High School District. “As Strive students started talking about college, and then got accepted, younger students on campus began to talk about college as a possibility for them, too. Strive more than doubled the rate at which students in the program at Del Mar attended four-year colleges.” Tom Vander Ark, Strive board member and former Executive Director for Education of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, views Strive for College as a worthwhile investment. “An investment in Strive will have one of the highest returns,” he says, “in terms of social impact for thousands of talented low-income students who will reach college, achieve their dreams and help the American economy get back on track.” “It’s a relatively small investment which can change peoples’ lives forever in a meaningful way,” says Carter. “I’ll be happy once every kid who earns the right to attend college can. I might not be able to solve world hunger, but I can help with this.” For more information on how to contribute to Strive’s efforts, please e-mail info@striveforcollege.org or visit www.striveforcollege.org.

Make dental health your priority

F

or many, New Year’s Day brings resolutions to improve one’s overall quality of life. When choosing your new year’s resolution, consider making your dental health a priority for 2011. This year why not resolve to have a healthy beautiful smile. Whether it is as simple as a cleaning and checkup every 6 months, or a complete smile makeover, we at Artisan Family Dental are here to help you achieve your goals.

Here are 5 Smile Resolutions: 1) Brush twice a day: Brushing your teeth properly removes plaque from the surface before it hardens into tartar and prevents tooth decay. 2) Floss daily: Although considered a difficult task for many, make the commitment to floss at least once a day. Plaque bacteria found between teeth can cause dental cavities that are hard to spot and difficult to remove. 3) Watch your diet: A healthy diet is good for your body and your teeth. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and calcium and limit your sugars, carbs and acidic foods.

Contact me regarding a home or investments

4) Change Toothbrush: Change your toothbrush every 3 to 6 months. Also change your toothbrush after having the flu or a cold.

(408) 256-4221 Direct

5) Routine Dental Check-up: Going to the dentist every 6 months for routine dental cleanings and examinations is the best way to make sure that your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout the year.

Let’s ring in the New Year with healthy resolutions that will make you smile and create healthy dental habits that can last a lifetime for you and your family.

What a year it has been!

2010 was quite a year by any assessment. After struggling to make sense out of the economy, there were indications that we were on our way out of the financial mess that has burdened us for so long. The federal government even announced the recession was over but nobody could believe it. I have always said that it takes quite some time before we know if we have hit the bottom or the top. Maybe the government really knows what is happening and we will all catch up with their prophecy by mid 2011. What I do know is that right now, if you are secure financially, is a very good time to buy real estate. Interest rates are the lowest they have been in 50 years. For many loans, rates just over 4 % are common. Home prices seem to be at the bottom of the curve. Many experts feel that home prices will most likely begin to rise in 2011, albeit slowly. If you are waiting for “the bottom” before you buy, ask yourself how will you recognize “the bottom”.

The Mercury News ran an article on December 2nd that headlined “Economic signposts pointing up at year-end”. They quoted a number of sources that indicated that spending, consumer confidence and personal incomes are all up. And on December 10th they wrote that hiring was beginning to increase. Right now, the home inventory is quite high. In many areas, the number of homes on the market is twice the number from this time a year ago. What does this mean to you? There are bargains available if the seller is realistic. Whether it is for your primary residence or an investment, buying a home right now is really as good as it gets. Your home may be worth less than you would like, but remember, you will be buying a home that is also worth less than it once was. This really is a great time to buy a home. If you would like to discuss the sale of your home, or if you know someone who might, please give me a call.

ello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF). 10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN TM

Staying Fit in Almaden “I train with personal trainer Chris Bentley at Women in Motion. Working out at 6:00 o’clock in the morning sometime is very challenging. Chris always pushes me to my limits and encourages me to be the person I know I can be. I have so much more energy, sleep better and feel better about myself. Working out can be fun as well, Chris always makes my workouts exciting and motivating. Chris is always wearing a smile even at 6:00 o’clock in the morning...”

— Sandy Gruwell

“I look forward to walks with my friend Lilian. We started meeting for coffee after taking our daughters to kindergarten, but quickly discovered that walking while talking for an hour was much healthier and more therapeutic. Our daughters are now college freshman and we are still walking together. This past year, I have greatly benefited from the CORE class offered by B.E.S.T. Physical Therapy. The class focuses on exercises and stretches that strengthen the core muscles and improve abdominal and back strength. The instructor, Kathy Johnson, is able to customize exercises for specific needs, such as my sciatic nerve pain that caused me to seek physical therapy. The workout has significantly toned my abdominal muscles, which were weakened after my twins were born. Now I feel really strong and Kathy even helped me to fit into my red party dress!” — Julie Hartman “I love having a beautiful yoga studio, Almaden Yoga, here in Almaden. I love attending different classes and I bring my children and husband when I can. Yoga is a wonderful way to relax, stretch and gain strength all at the same time. The teachers are fantastic. I personally enjoy the benefits of yoga like decreased back pain and better mind/body balance. The convenience of having a studio near my home is the best!” — Anne Hayden

“As a breast cancer survivor, health and fitness both before I was diagnosed and after have been very important to my overall happiness, as well as, physical and mental recovery...” Chrissy Derksen, Founder, 95120 Magazine

“I first took Geeta’s Bollywood class at AVAC last year. It had been a few years since I had a regular exercise routine and was not in the best of shape. Bollywood incorporates East Indian and hip/hop fusion to create a dynamic workout! At the end of the first bollywood class I was out of breath; however, I continued to dance with Geeta every week as the East Indian fusion rhythms are energy-packed and the choreography fun to do, even for a beginner. I am always reenergized after an hour of dancing with Bolly2B Fit. It is unlike any dance I have experienced, with my favorite songs/route to include the rhythmic Bhangra beats and the dhole (Indian drum). Since Geeta choreographs routines which target core muscles, you don’t even realize you are working all the important muscles which keep the body strong. The scarf dancing is a great workout, which along with other exercise, keeps arms lean and strong. Bolly2B Fit is a great way to introduce oneself to the international dance and music scene while getting an amazing work out you won’t soon forget.” — Sandy Geoghegan “After a terrible fall seven years ago and three back surgeries later, it was Supriya at Almaden Physical Therapy that helped ease the pain and allowed me to exercise and return to work. She has the most incredible, trained fingers to find the pain points and release so much of the pain. Her knowledge of myofascial release is amazing. She knows just how to make the nerves and muscles respond. Whether it’s working out on the equipment, having a wonderful massage of the sore muscles or just using the relaxing stimulators and heat, Almaden Physical Therapy is at the top of my list! Their convenient location in the heart of Almaden Valley is just an added perk!” — Bev Kitchen “My wife, Michelle, and I like to stay active working out, hiking and playing golf. We are members of Almaden Golf & Country Club which provides a great family setting for swimming, tennis and golf. When we golf we both like to walk instead of riding carts. This has proven to be a great way to relieve stress and get some exercise. The course is always kept in great shape, and I honestly believe that Almaden has the best scenery and is the best walking course in the Bay Area.” — Brian Walsh

Waking up to teen sleep

A

ccording to the American Sleep Disorders Association, the average teenager needs around 10 hours of sleep per night, yet studies show that teenagers generally get an average of only 7 ½ hours a night. We all know that teens can be a bit crabby, short tempered and unreasonable. But add chronic sleep deprivation and your ornery teenager can be down right unbearable. In addition, sleep deprivation in teens has been linked to poor school performance, depression and poor weight control. So it is as important as ever that your teen get a reasonable amount of sleep on a daily basis. This can be hard to achieve given their busy social schedule, heavy homework load, and after school activities. Mom and Dad... this is why it is important that you take an active role in your teenagers’ sleep habits. Develop a Bedtime Routine Developing a bedtime routine for your teen can be tricky, because it is very likely you are tucked snuggly in bed and sound asleep before your teen is ready to turn in. Nevertheless, teens should have a routine which occurs at roughly the same time each night and starts 30-60 minutes before bedtime.

1. Start by turning off all screens: Whether it is the computer, TV or cell phone, we know that screens keep the brain awake. Several studies have shown that screen time just before bed inhibits one’s ability to fall asleep and reduces the quality of sleep. Be sure to check call and text activity on your teens cell phone as many teens will text late in to the night. If your teen is placing or receiving texts or phone calls after your predeter- mined time, take the phone away each night and return it in the morning. 2. Prepare for the next day: Pick out clothes, organize back pack, etc. Showering, light reading, listening to music, and other quiet activities provide a good transition. These things help the brain wind down and fall asleep more easily and quickly. 3. Avoid caffeine: This may be obvious to you and me, but it is certainly not obvious to most teenagers. Any caffeine after about 12 noon can make it difficult to fall asleep in the evening. Remember that many soft drinks and just about anything you get at Starbucks is caffeinated. What about weekends? If you have a busy teen, weekends can be a good time to let them catch up on their sleep. However, this should be achieved by going to bed at a reasonable time and sleeping in a little, but not excessively. Teens commonly go to bed excessively late (2AM or 3AM) and/or sleep in excessively (after noon-time) on the weekend. After doing this on Friday and Saturday, it is no wonder that by Sunday night they cannot get to bed at a reasonable time, and they start the week sleep deprived. So while it is ok to loosen the reigns a little on the weekends you still need to enforce a “lights out” policy at night and an “up an at ‘em” policy in the morning. What about the hard to arouse teen? If your teenager is particularly difficult to rouse in the morning on weekends or weekdays, try this trick, open the bedroom blinds about 30-60 minutes prior to when you would like them to wake up. The exposure to ambient daylight is an important trigger to the hormones which help wake up the mind and body. This can help get your teen to wake up when it is time.

This story continues from page 6 An independent panel decides which of the 100 or so senior student applicants will be selected to model. They are required to submit an essay, as well as provide information about how they have strived to live out the school motto: “Not Words But Deeds”. The girls that have “modeled” the school motto best are selected as models. While grades do play a part in the selection process, body type and size is never considered. They showcase students who have given back to their community. As is very apparent, Mollie and Patti live by that rule as well, and 95120 residents are lucky to have them in our community.

Mollie Tobias “We (husband Richard, daughters Elizabeth class of 2007, Andrea class of 2009, Kimberly class of 2011 and Christina future class of 2014) have lived in Almaden near 20 years. We choose to live in Almaden because of the community. With friendly people, excellent public schools, safe neighborhoods and a community that values respect, responsibility, integrity and innovation, it is and has been, a wonderful place to raise our family!”

Patti Rottjakob “My husband Steve moved to Almaden to start his dental practice in 1986. At that time we did not have children and did not even consider the quality of the schools. When we started a family, the convenient location allowed me to work at the office but also be readily available to my daughters, Nicole class of 2009 and Taylor class of 2011, as they attended Graystone Elementary and Bret Harte Middle School. We really just got lucky by living and raising our children in Almaden. The dental practice was available and we thought it would be an excellent community to settle in. We truly enjoy living in Almaden and working so close to home.” Presentation High School Mission Statement Presentation High School is a college-preparatory secondary school for girls whose purpose and direction flow from the teaching mission of the Catholic Church and the educational ministry of the Sisters of the Presentation. This school strives to infuse the entire educational experience with the vision of life found in the Gospels. Each student is challenged to become a woman of faith, dedicated to working with others, intellectually competent and committed to her personal growth. Presentation works in partnership with the family, which is the primary educator. Presentation assumes responsibility for using its unique resources to bring about its stated purposes.

Presentation recognizes the following principles as the foundation upon which all our goals, outcomes, programs and procedures are developed and evaluated. • Rooted in the belief that every human being is made in the image and likeness of God, we commit ourselves to developing the whole person – her spiritual, intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, psychological and physical powers.

• Faith is a gift from God which must be nurtured. • That Gospel values are best taught and lived in a community of faith. • The role of education is to empower young women to make responsible decisions, embrace their responsibility to work for peace and justice and to assume their full stature in today’s society. • That the school must be an active institution in the greater community whose students and faculty embody the motto, “Not Words but Deeds.”

hile I was researching Almaden Valley for an earlier 95120 Lifestyle article, I found a barn in Almaden Valley that had been used as a parachute factory during World War II. The owners told me of its history. They repeated what the previous owner, Tom Noble, long since deceased, told them.

Parachute jump based on Da Vinci’s Model As early as 1797, a Frenchman jumped from a hot air balloon. The parachute oscillated so wildly that he became quite airsick. Soon, another Frenchman introduced a hole in the center, which seemed to slow the oscillations. Why would this Frenchman work so hard to get up in the air in a baloon and then jump out?

“There were about 40 women working (in the barn) to sew the sheets, add the cords and carefully pack the chutes so that they would open when needed.”

Earkly in the 20th century, an American designed a pullcord so a parachute would open automatically when an airman jumped out of a plane. Even so, the Americans rarely used parachutes during the first World War. By the time the Second World War started, the Army Air Corps used them extensivly to save pilots’ lives. But military strategists learned the value of dropping troops into battle by air. This required that thousands of parachutes be manufactured for the war effort. Even then, it was dangerous to drop out of the air, since parachutes were not yet steerable. It was in 1944 when Frank Derry learned that placing a slit in the parachute would allow the chutist to steer his way to the surface. American Paratrooper with a steerable parachute I can imagine that the workers rushed to work every day to this long, long narrow barn, eager to help the war effort while their relatives and friends

95120spotlight What’s in a Name: Case emphasizes Design. Almaden Lifestyle

A

fter six years of success in the South Bay as a premier remodeler, Case Handyman and Remodeling is changing their name. The Almaden Valley based, full-service remodeler is now known as Case Design/Remodeling reflecting a continuing emphasis on design. Why the change? Owner, Jim Kabel, a NARI Certified Remodeler, says it is a matter of perception. “We’ve built a great name for ourselves in the professional handyman services arena having earned Diamond Certification and Angie’s List Super Service recognition for the past five years,” says Jim. “We have very loyal clients that hire us for home repairs several times a year. But we also have an incredible group of delighted remodeling clients with projects ranging from bathroom and kitchen remodels to ‘whole house’ renovations and additions, completely designed and built by our team.” Case invested in design capability after only one year in business. Jim adds, “It was clear that to deliver anything more than a simple ‘pull and replace’ bathroom, we needed to help homeowners visualize the possibilities by presenting options for both layout and final design details. Initially, we did this through a combination of in-house and partner-provided design resources. It soon became clear we could make this easier for our clients through a one-stop, design-build business model.” Enter Ramona Tan, the Case in-house Project Designer who joined December 2007. Ramona is a degreed, certified interior designer with experience in designing model homes and custom furniture. She also has earned a CAPS

certification in Universal Design from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Says Jim, “Ramona is the perfect designer for our company. She is exceptional at not only space planning and layout but is very knowledgeable about the pros and cons of different fixtures, finishes, and soft-treatments for a wide range of client needs. She produces all our final Computer Aided Design system drawings to document details for the building department, our team, our partners, and most importantly, the homeowner.” Design/build means Case can help a client create design options for a project within a specified budget range and know precisely what the construction costs will be before committing to build. The other big benefits are a faster design cycle and a single point of ownership to ensure the project starts and completes on time. As a design/build remodeler, Case San Jose has been even more highly recognized: Eleven NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) design awards in the past 5 years, a Guild Quality GuildMaster award for quality and customer satisfaction, Top 500 recognition from Qualified Remodeler Magazine for the past 4 years, and induction into Remodeling Magazine’s Big 50 in 2010 as one of 50 US companies recognized each year for their excellence in a number of operational areas. So what happens to the Case “Handyman” business? “Not a thing”, says Jim. “We love doing small projects for our homeowner clients and we’ll continue to do so as a key part of our business. Case can be your one-stop source for a variety of home repair and remodeling projects. No job is too big or too small.”

Should Someone “Trust” you?

D

o you have a revocable living trust? Do you need one? You have probably heard that a revocable living trust is a way to avoid probate, but there are additional reasons for having a revocable living trust. There may also be reasons not to incur the expense of a living trust. 1. Avoiding Probate – Properties that have a designated beneficiary (such as your life insurance, 401K, etc.) do not go through probate. Likewise, your trust instrument will spell out who gets the property included in your trust, so that property can avoid probate as well. Revocable living trusts usually distribute property faster and with less cost than probate. 2. Managing Property if You are Incapacitated – A revocable living trust allows your successor trustee to manage your assets, and is a better solution than a durable power of attorney, which may be more limited and more difficult for banks and brokerage firms to work with. 3. Private or Public? – Details of your trust will be private, and don’t get filed with the probate court. Since probate files are open to the public, anyone can go in and read your will after you die. 4. Protecting Property – Suppose you have assets worth $1,000,000, and both husband and wife die, leaving their son, a 19-year old college student, as the sole heir. Maybe giving him the funds in one big check is not such a great idea! A trust allows you to create a plan that gives distributions until he reaches a certain age (e.g. 25 years old), with the balance going to him when he is mature enough to handle it. 5. Avoiding or Eliminating Taxes – Revocable living trusts can allow you to take advantage of certain credits and deductions, which ultimately create tax savings. Recent legislation has increased the estate tax exemption to $5,000,000 which will help relieve taxes for transfers in 2011 and 2012, but it expires in 2013, at which time it goes back to $1,000,000. However, even with this increase in the exemption, a revocable living trust may be desired for the non-financial elements. But do you really need a revocable living trust? Here are some factors to consider before spending $3,000 to $5,000 getting a revocable living trust set up: 1. Age – The older you are, the more a revocable living trust may be the way to go. But revocable living trusts don’t benefit you during your lifetime... so if you are younger and in good health, you may want to wait and just get a will in place. 2. Wealth – The more you have, the more you save by keeping out avoiding probate. Also, if you have assets that would suffer from being tied up in probate (such as a small business), you may want a revocable living trust even of you are on the younger side. 3. Jointly held assets – If you own most large assets with your spouse, and you are leaving the property to each other, setting up a revocable living trust at an early age may not be necessary, since most of those assets won’t pass through probate (or will pass through quickly). If in doubt, talk to an estate planning attorney and get the pros and cons for your situation – they can outline whether you need to make sure your assets and your family are provided for in the way you intend them to be. However, be cautious about using low cost providers, as you may get an “off the shelf ” document that is not a good fit for you, instead of a personalized solution.
