T

he holidays have always been my favorite time of year, as it is a time of reflecting, being thankful and showing generosity. Additionally, the merriment and aesthetically pleasing lighting and decor brought about from the holiday season, counter the shorter and colder days. In the Save the Date section we note some of the fun holiday family festivities in the area that are worth a visit, as well as some upcoming events. I am thankful Almaden has such a mild winter climate that allows us to still enjoy outdoor activities. Our neighborhood and hiking trails are still full of exuberant fitness enthusiasts. Individuals in Almaden are what contribute to its greatness, as everyone is particularly caring. The Fall Floral Fantasy event brought to us by the Assistance League

of San Jose is a perfect example. I was impressed and once again amazed with this year’s Floral Fantasy, which is a welcome Almaden tradition. Kren Rasmussen, the founder of Bloomsters entertained the sold out crowd by sharing floral design tips and secrets, as he created numerous floral masterpieces to be raffled off to lucky winners amongst the luncheon attendees. Even the most experienced green thumbs in the crowd learned a new trick or two.

Good Intentions

KeepYour Holidays Safe

I

n October 2010, there was a horrific crash on Almaden Expressway which involved a drinking teenage driver and ended in tragedy. Sherri Greer and Martha Kelley talked about the devastation for the families. We’ve had many similar accidents in Almaden Valley. “The community is saddened and then two weeks later it seems that everyone has forgotten except for those whose lives were ripped apart. We decided that we can’t forget the kids who have been killed or maimed in these accidents. We won’t forget those kids, and that is why we began Almaden Cares,” informs Martha Kelley. “We were quickly joined by Bob Coelho, Jim Greer and Stan Harris. We began having meetings to decide how best to proceed. We pulled together a board of directors (Haryl Pascal, Melissa Riqueros, Jennifer Anderson, Cheryl Cognetti, Mike Lombardo, Johnny Khamis and Greg Goodman) and began our work. All involved are Almaden residents and came together through word of mouth and a shared desire to make a difference in this area. The board is an amazingly talented, creative and inventive group. All members put forth effort for Almaden Cares, rather than just a few carrying the ball.” They enlisted stores and businesses in Almaden to post the Almaden Cares messages in their windows so that people walking by would see the posters and reflect. Almaden Cares members hope individuals in our community will recall these messages and consider each when making personal driving choices. 06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

They hold monthly meetings to enlist the interest of parents of teen drivers and the teens themselves. There is a guest speaker at each meeting to help encourage and support their mission. If you would like to get involved, please let them know. One moving speaker was a young lady who killed a motorcyclist while drunk driving. She talked about the devastation she caused. She was not required to speak as a community service but she felt the need to spread her cautionary tale. She wept throughout but would not give up until she had completed her talk. Virginia Jones from AMR talk about what the medical teams find when they come upon these accidents and how it impacts them. Jody Iorns from MADD was the most recent speaker. Almaden Cares communicates their messaging through the media and has an ongoing PR campaign. Besides this story in the 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine, we have weekly ads printed in the Almaden Resident. Additionally, Robert Braunstein from CAL-HI Sports runs a weekly 30-second commercial on his TV show spreading the Almaden Cares message. Almaden Cares partnering with The South Bay Regional Safety Consortium has held two days of educational training on their driving simulators. These are the same simulators used to train our police officers. They were able to give 70 teens the ‘simulated’ experience of driving

while texting to see how quickly they could react to situations such as; a child chasing a ball into the street, avoiding a red light runner, tailgating, and driving with ‘drunk goggles’ to simulate intoxicated driving. They were surprised at their reaction time. They crashed… without getting hurt of course as would happen in real life. In conjunction with MADD, Almaden Cares held an event at Pioneer high school where the remains of a car (after a wreck) was parked in their quad for the day. Next to this attraction, anti-drinking and driving events took place during the lunch hour coordinated by Jesse Marshall of Pioneer’s Project Ignition.

Spruce up your home for the holidays! A Home Equity Line of Credit or Second Mortgage from National 1st can make your holiday dreams come true!

This map of District 10 running from Gunderson to Leland that shows the fatal and major injury accidents involving teens.

Last year Almaden Cares also partnered with Silicon Valley Inter-school council who have teen representatives on 18 high school campuses. They held a “Not Another” drive where 4,000 teen drivers pledged to not be another statistic. “We’ve been very active during our first year. Our goal is to keep this important issue front and center in our community. We have more projects in mind and we need other community members to help us with our mission. Please contact us (Martha@almadencares.com) if you would like to help, or for more information visit our website www.almadencares.com,” shares Martha. “Be alert! Accidents hurt!”, “Speed’s a thriller....speed’s a killer.”

Historic Steinway & Sons Grand Piano - a 1918 Gem

When Henry Steinway laid eyes on the finished 1918 Steinway & Sons’ grand piano he said, ”This [piano] belongs in a museum. She’s a beauty!”

A

concert to honor this amazing piano was held at the Ralston Mansion. The Steinway & Sons’ grand piano that recently resurfaced has a rich history and belonged to the notable Harry S. Harkness. Interestingly, this is the first time this beautiful instrument with its fascinating history has been available for purchase.

furniture craftsmen of the time, Schmieg/Hungate/Kotzian. Sadly, Harry died of influenza in 1919 in the global disaster of the flu pandemic that swept across the world killing up to 40 million people. Harry was never able to present this spectacular gift to his wife as the art case had not been completed when Harry died. Shortly after his death, the piano was delivered to his wife’s door.

THE HISTORY Having been restored to its original beauty, including the 24-karat gold leaf patina highlighting the detailed carvings, this piano is one of the most expensive pianos built during that era. With the magnificence of its tone and beautiful art case this piece of American history brings with it the allure of an intriguing past and more than a hint of drama and romantic mystery. Harry S. Harkness, who has been referred to as the Howard Hughes of his era, was one of the pioneers in early aviation as well as an acclaimed automobile racer who raced against Henry Ford and awarded his Harkness Trophy to Louis Chevrolet. Harry was also a yachtsman who actually leased his yacht to the U.S. Navy in World War I and which was credited with sinking three German U-boats. Harry’s father, Lamon Harkness, was one of the largest stockholders in Standard Oil when the Rockefellers were just starting the company. In 1918 Harry purchased the Steinway & Sons Model B grand piano for his lovely second bride, Florence Harkness, as he reportedly enjoyed lavishing her with expensive gifts. Harry had the piano art case contracted to be built by the master

SPONSOR Cherie Rose of The Rose Collection in Los Gatos was proud to sponsor this concert. As a design and style expert, Cherie knows this piano is a “worldclass piece of art.” EVENT DETAILS The concert featured Theodora Martin, an 18 year-old piano phenomenon. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Theodora has won numerous national and international competitions, taking first place in many of them. Also performing was the talented Marcia Cope-Hart, soprano, who is currently performing with “Phantom of the Opera” in the Las Vegas spectacular. Marcia has performed with such greats as Luciano Pavarotti, Beverly Sills and Renata Scotto. Kaye Boyler also captivated the audience. This exquisite piano has been on display at the Rose Collection. Shelley Ballard– Cucina Bambini

C

ucina Bambini, located in the heart of Willow Glen, is the creation of San Jose natives Shelley and Rick Ballard. After selling the Monetessori school that the couple founded and operated for eight years, they sought to build a new business that combined Shelley’s passion for teaching with her creative energy and love for cooking. The result is Cucina Bambini – a fun, unintimidating cooking school and party place for the kid in all of us, but with professional-grade appliances and facilities to appeal to the most discriminating “top chef ”. Shelley is an avid home chef and lifelong educator, holding a bachelor’s degree in child development, a California multiple subject teaching credential and a Montessori teaching certificate. Rick is a former NASA researcher turned intellectual property attorney (and part-time handyman and dishwasher). Their two kids, Ryan and Maddie, attend Archbishop Mitty High School and split their few non-study hours between various Mitty activities, Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose, and helping with kids’ camps and parties at Cucina Bambini. Cucina Bambini offers classes, parties and events for kids and adults of all levels of cooking experience. For the lil’ chefs, Shelley has spent years preparing custom step-by-step recipes and lesson plans that encourage preschoolers to scoop, measure, mix and cook their way to creating menu items item from start

to finish, entirely by themselves. For older kids and adults, Cucina Bambini has enlisted the help of local professional chefs to help create a wide variety of fun, hands-on, age and skill-appropriate recipes and lessons – such as pasta and pizza, cakes and cupcakes, creative appetizers, barbecue classes, international cuisines (sushi, Thai, Indian), and custom multicourse dinner party menus. Since Cucina Bambini opened in 2008, they have hosted over 2,000 kids’ birthday parties and scores of adult dinner parties and events (including corporate parties and events for Silicon Valley companies such as Google, Apple, HP, Adobe, Yahoo!, eBay, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Applied Materials, and many others.) After nearly four years of building the business, the Ballards are preparing to expand and open new Cucina Bambini locations in Los Gatos and the Peninsula.

From Local Dream to Worldwide Tradition Almaden resident helps keep The Salvation Army Silicon Valley tradition alive.

t started as a dream on Christmas day on a dock in San Francisco nearly 120 years ago. A bell and a simple pot bearing a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling” encouraged passers-by to toss in spare coins, raising money to feed homeless and hungry people in the city. Now a worldwide tradition, the “spare change” concept that drives the success of the kettle campaign enables the organization to feed, clothe and assist millions all over the world. For Almaden’s Angela Kelly, it’s not just a holiday tradition; it’s a passionate, year-round effort to reach out to the community for the support that enables The Salvation Army Silicon Valley to serve roughly two-thirds of the zip codes in the County (including Almaden and most of South County). Carefully stewarding donations ensures that locally, more than 90 cents of every dollar goes directly into programs and services. “The cost of living in Santa Clara County is high enough that many people cannot afford basic food needs.” Kelly says. “In Santa Clara County, one in four individuals face hunger on a daily basis, and 40 percent of those individuals are children. At The Salvation Army, we’ve seen the requests for assistance more than quadruple in the last two years.” According to recent homelessness census, there are 6,171 homeless people in Santa Clara County—261 of them are children and 671 are vulnerable youth between the ages of 18 and 21. The cost of living is rising at its fastest pace in a generation. In fact, over 40% of all seniors can’t make ends meet. It’s sobering to know people are making impossible choices every day between food, rent and medicine. According to Kelly, 10 local facilities provide safety net emergency assistance throughout the year for people in Santa Clara County who live below the poverty line. This includes rental and deposit assistance; PG&E assistance; counseling and training; support for struggling seniors; hot meals, 20 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

assistance and rehabilitation for the homeless; free residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation; and backpacks, school supplies, school clothes, summer camps, gang prevention and intervention, and character-building programs for children and young adults. These highly effective programs and services continue to empower those in need to overcome challenges and change their circumstances, providing a hand up, not a hand out. “Last year alone, local kettle contributions and gifts made it possible to assist more than 90,000 individuals with basic needs, serve 3,544 Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, distribute 20,567 toys, provide 3,090 food boxes, and deliver 47,266 gifts to needy individuals and families,” Kelly says. “These are powerful statistics when each number represents a hungry child, a lonely senior, someone sleeping on the street, or increasingly, a struggling family living in their car. Each of us knows someone who has struggled recently, perhaps even lost their home. This isn’t a problem in a distant place, it’s in our neighborhood, it’s happening to friends and family…donors have become clients.” “Those who feel they really have all they need for Christmas can establish an Online Red Kettle, raising money through their social network or even gather a group of friends and family to ring the kettle-bell at their neighborhood store.” says Kelly. “They can encourage family, friends or co-workers to help fill it up as alternate gifts. It’s a great way to start a new tradition. When you know that the gift made either at the kettle you see outside the store, or through an online donation can cover the cost of a meal for 30 cents, suddenly you realize that even the smallest gift is hope and help to someone who is hungry. Sharing our blessings is easy when we know just how much we make a difference. Singing Christmas carols together, saying ‘Merry Christmas’ to passers-by as they enter the store, it’s just fun! Kettle ringing with friends and helping the poor is the best way to get in the true, holiday spirit!”

Kelly reaches out to businesses and community organizations establishing partnerships and service programs that align with their service and philanthropy goals. Whether through sponsorships, grants, structured giving, matching contribution plans or volunteerism—all are tailored to maximize the results for the folks who care about the community they live in, and of course, those who benefit from that generosity. “Financial gifts and volunteers have never been more important,” says Kelly. “There are many ways even the smallest business, service club, church or neighborhood group, family or individual may make a huge impact. As an example, the Almaden Valley Women’s Club recently provided a grant to provide diapers and formula. Their grant of $500 made it possible to serve 50 infants. In-Kind Drives and Donations invite group folks to collect needed items such as food and toys; sleeping bags, baby formula and hygiene items. All of these help fill a need that cannot be met by cash contributions alone, augmenting operational efficiencies, build capacity and return more from every dollar raised to programs and services.”

Matt Perri (Leland High Graduate) helping with Kettles for the Army at Christmas. He plays guitar (at the Coop on Wed.’s), sax, and sings at Kettles (in Los Gatos and Nordstrom’s In Valley Fair). Sharing time and expertise in fields such as information technologies and professional services, or presenting work-shops to clients on financial literacy, interviewing skills, etc. provides valuable resources for little-to-no expense. Volunteers may also participate in the practical aspects of delivering services and programs. These scenarios could be as diverse as packing bags of food, mentoring at-risk kids, serving a meal in the homeless shelter or even visiting wounded vets in the hospital. Getting in The Salvation Army’s image-wrapped VW Beetle to leave the interview (donated by an anonymous board-member, like a grand Secret Santa), Angela waves and says “good-bye,” but the message has remained. While most in Silicon Valley think of WHAT to eat for dinner, there are those wondering IF they will eat for dinner… and for thirty cents, any one of us can change that…

2011 Charger Invitational awards dinner official placemat | Winners of the 2011 Leland Charger Invitational Golf Tournament Lenny Venitimiglia, Caitlynn Steinberg, Derek Muirhead, Bill Foote and Jeff Steinberg | Mike Rorie competes in the pitching contest | A participant tries his hand at chipping

he Leland High School Booster Club held its third annual Charger Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday, September 23 at Santa Teresa Golf Club. A sold-out field of 144 golfers enjoyed a warm afternoon and evening of golf, games, food, drink, and camaraderie. Some of them even played pretty good golf. Kevin Jones, tournament chairman and past Booster Club President was very pleased with the turnout. “Santa Teresa always puts on a great event for us. Everyone I talked to had a blast,” he said. In addition to the tournament itself – a four man ball scramble – golfers participated in various games such as a pitching contest, a putting contest, and longest marshmallow drive. The day began with a barbeque and ended with an awards dinner, raffle, and silent auction. Prizes were awarded for longest drive, closest to the pin, and of course, lowest combined score. This year, that honor went to the team of Lenny Venitimiglia, Derek Muirhead, Bill Foote, Caitlynn Steinberg and Jeff Steinberg. The tournament attracted three dozen sponsors, many of them Almaden Valley businesses. Sponsors contributed money as well as in-kind donations for the raffle and silent auction. The tournament’s main sponsor was Stevens Creek Toyota. The tournament committee, a hard-working group of Booster Club volunteers, made sure everyone had a good time and that the day went smoothly. Kevin Hubbard and Denise Schmidt assembled a gift bag for each golfer that included a limited-edition Leland logo golf cap, pin, and package 22 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

of golf tees. Janice Beauchamp coordinated the golf day volunteers including registration staff, hole monitors, and drink cart drivers. Julie Miller solicited and assembled raffle prizes. Scott McLaughlin organized games at various holes. Dave Kehmeier designed the sponsor plaques displayed at the tees and the placemats with sponsors’ logos for the awards dinner. Overall, approximately 20 volunteers were involved in the planning and execution of the tournament. All proceeds from the tournament are used by the Leland Booster Club to fund capital improvement projects for Leland athletics. These include the stadium press box renovation, athletic field entryway, gym scoreboard and sound system, and weight room equipment. In addition, the Booster Club helps pay for the team trainer, coaches’ stipends not covered by the district, as well as much-needed equipment for individual teams. The Booster Club also gives out annual scholarships to graduating Leland athletes. With the support of the Leland Booster Club, Leland athletics continues to be one of the most successful athletic programs in the Central Coast Section. Start planning now to join the fun at next year’s fourth annual Charger Invitation Golf Tournament. You’ll have a great time and help out Leland athletics. Everybody wins. I’m Still Hungry!

T

he great epidemic of the 21st century is obesity, in adults and kids. While there has been a volume of research into the genetics of obesity, still little is known. What we do know through studies is that kids who are overweight are more likely to have low self-esteem and poor school performance. And we also know that children who are overweight or obese are significantly more likely to become obese as adults. Which is why it is crucial to address excess weight early in life. For the lucky ones, knowing when to stop eating comes naturally, but for some kids developing control over their eating is something that must be learned and it is our job as parents to teach them that control. If you exert too much control or not enough control over what your child eats then they will not learn to control their intake on their own.

“But I’m hungry…!” As parents we are programmed to care for and protect our children. So when we hear one of our children complaining of hunger it is only natural to want to respond by feeding them. However, just because your child feels hungry (wants to eat), doesn’t mean that your child is hungry (needs to eat). If they have recently eaten a reasonable amount of food and they still say they are hungry then they simply feel hungry and it is ok to say no. Parents are often surprised (and a bit relieved) when I tell them that it is ok to say,

“No, you have had enough for now.” So, what is a reasonable amount? Follow, this rule of thumb: A child should eat a child size portion. A child portion is generally ¼ to ½ of an adult portion. Can your 9 year old eat an adult hamburger at BJ’s? That is just too much food for a child that age. My child does not eat any more than the next kid and is still gaining weight. Kids do come in all different shapes and sizes and it is a cruel reality of life that two people can eat the same thing and it will have different effects on their body. And so, if your child is unlucky enough to be one of those who tend to gain weight easily they just need to eat less and exercise more. Yes, that is not fair. Keeping it a secret I often encounter parents who are concerned about their child’s weight but do not want to discuss it in front of them for fear of making them feel bad. Studies have shown that kids know they are overweight compared to their peers by first or second grade. And if they don’t know by then, another child will certainly let them know by third or fourth grade. Which is why it is crucial that these children are included in the process so that they can understand that they do have control over this and, with the help of parents, the power to change. In the end, avoiding obesity still comes down to expending more calories than you take in and that is done by eating a balanced diet, limiting portions and portion sizes and exercising daily.

It’s Time to Start Planning for the End of 2011

A

s the year comes to a close, a little bit of year-end planning (both personal and in your business) can become extremely valuable. Here’s a few thing to consider as 2012 quickly approaches:

Business Year End Planning: 1. Corporate Governance: It’s important to maintain certain corporate formalities if you want to continue to have the limited liability protections of a corporation. For example, now may be the time to hold your annual meeting. In annual meetings, shareholders typically elect the Board of Directors, approve corporate officers, ratify past actions of the company, and review the financial statements and any material events of the company. Even in a closely held corporation, this is an important but often overlooked matter. 2. Tax considerations: While tax planning is going to vary depending on your company’s circumstances, the following actions may be worth considering. a. Defer Income: If possible, consider some timing adjustments. If you are a business on a “cash basis,” any payments received after December 31 will be taxed in 2012, even if the sale occurs in 2011. If the business is on an “accrual basis,” the sale is taxed in the year it is booked, so you might consider deferring the sale itself until after December 31. b. Make Purchases: Paying bills early, buying office supplies, and purchasing equipment before 2012 will reduce 2011 taxable profits. c. Pay Bonuses: If employees have earned bonuses, your company may want to make that payment before 2012 to reduce 2011 taxable profits if you operate on the business on a cash basis. d. Take Your Losses: Now may be the time to write off that old inventory for the tax benefits you can receive. e. Estimated Tax Payments: Quarterly payments paid to date may be overpaid, allowing the final quarter’s payment to be adjusted.

CHARLENE VERTICAL

Personal Year End Planning: 1. Tax Withholdings: Take a look at your paycheck withholdings to make sure Uncle Sam won’t be holding more of your money than you’d like him to. 2. Take Your Losses: Investments not working out? It may be time to take the losses on those, so you can lower your taxable income. 3. Give, Give, Give! You can give up to $13,000 a year, tax free, to any number of people. Note that this includes everything you give during the year, including amounts gifted at birthdays, holidays, etc. Also, don’t forget to take care of the charities close to your heart this time of year. 4. Saving It for Later: Remember to take a look at your 401K, Roth IRA, or other retirement savings plans, so you can maximize your 2011 contributions. Paying taxes is bad enough without paying more than you are required to. End of the year planning, including tax planning, can make sure that you and your business come into 2012 prepared for another exciting, and hopefully profitable, new year!

Gratitude

A

s we approach the holidays and new year, some people begin to reflect and recognize the things that they are grateful for. I am thankful that my family is in good health (if you didn’t read about my wife in the last issue of the 95120, check it out). I am thankful that my children are allowed to be kids and have the ability to enjoy a childhood. It is great to have a roof over my head and food in my belly.

On a professional level, I love my job. I love the impact that I have the opportunity to make each and every day. I have the extreme pleasure of watching my students grow and impact others within the community. I am thankful for the best students and most incredible parents in the area. I am thankful for the future students that are now in the process of coming our way. It is a true honor to be around like-minded individuals who support their children in enhancing confidence, self discipline, strength, coordination, and their spirit. We feel very fortunate here at America’s Best Karate to have a waiting list for some of our classes. A number of our classes are sold out and at capacity. If you were not aware, we have an educational partner program. In our educational partner program, we (with Almaden Pilates) donate our services and uniforms to a school or group (For example, Graystone HSC, Williams Wins, Simonds Music and Tech, Almaden Country, etc.) with that school receiving 100% of the proceeds. A student new to the academy can purchase lessons directly from the school. It is a great program, as we are able to raise money for the schools and work to develop a student in ways outside of the academic institution or other athletic activity. You can check out our educational partners program on our web site www.almadenkarate.com. I encourage you to find things to be truly grateful for. When we are grateful for what we have, we activate an ability to attract more of what we want. I encourage you to work to see the positive. Our inner world creates our outer world. Everything is perception and how we interpret it. If you have the ability to read this, which is a start, you are doing great. I personally know families that are struggling right now in the current economic climate. The great thing about life is that we truly don’t know what is around the next corner. Believe that something good is here now. All you have to do is run one more lap, throw one more kick or just go through one more moment to truly get there. Understand that obstacles are lessons and are designed to make us look at something or to help us in furthering our growth. This season give what you can because you can. Be a part of the solution. Be an inspiration to others. Enjoy your moments and be thankful that you are having them. Thank you for taking the time to read this column. Best Wishes to all in the upcoming year!
