MY LIFE IN ALMADEN

I

t has been nice receiving positive feedback regarding the “Getting to Know You” articles, and this issue they continue. I now continue my bio (beginning after the acquisition of our design firm). I was Director of Marketing and Wil held the position of VP of Creative Services for Creatus, Inc., the company we merged with. The first year, everything was proceeding extremely well and all departments achieved their targets, but the second year the engineering placement department took a large dip in revenue, during the dot com bubble burst, as their engineering contracts where continuously getting canceled. The company ultimately closed their U.S. operations without notice, laying off near a hundred employees including us, and relocated to India. We became self-employed again, immediately reaching out to past clientele, however the following year was tricky as well, as that was the year of 9-11 which brought business to a complete standstill which was something I had never experienced during my lifetime. We were in the process of branding a startup company for instance, when suddenly their venture capitalist investors cancelled funding and even moved their furniture out while the employees were at a tradeshow. Needless to say,

that three-month project was never paid for! A former customer phoned us about that time, and asked if we could introduce a new product to the U.S. market—a Korean made USB flash drive. No one here knew of the product and we thought it an exciting challenge. We worked hard introducing, packaging and launching the drive, and grew that business successfully as a sales and middle distribution arm. The company sold their product rights to a national distributor eventually. We developed one great design customer for a few years shortly there after, which was the Thomas Kinkade Foundation. The Foundation donated Thomas Kinkade’s personal funds to worthy causes. We worked so well with the President that Wil was eventually offered a Creative Director position as an employee in their Morgan Hill corporate office, which he accepted, although he had to work with different management. He did have the pleasure to assist Thom in his studio, which was rewarding. This freed my schedule up quite a bit, and Nina was attending Williams Elementary with Nicolas soon to start as well, so I took the opportunity to become very involved in the classroom (room mom, field trips, group teaching, science and art docent, JGB literature program) and with the PTA. Initially, I began a volunteer PR position which I continued for 5 years, but after a few years, I became a board member as well, serving as the VP of Educational Services. I enjoyed all aspects of this timeframe, and even though Wil and I began a business together again (after his short stint with corporate life for a year or so), I continued volunteering at the school and also became a Holy Spirit catechism teacher for my son’s class and even assisted coaching for softball and soccer when they were in a pinch. I will leave off here and continue next issue when we launched the magazine.

rab your sunscreen and favorite hat and get ready for a great time at the 35th Annual Art & Wine Festival (Festival) on Sunday, September 18th. Planning is underway and this year’s Festival is sure to be a hit, with approximately a hundred unique artisans displaying phenomenal products sure to please even the most discriminating of tastes. Admission is free. Bring your spending money as there is entertainment for all ages, food and rides to purchase in addition to the artistic products. The expanded children’s area includes: bounce houses, an obstacle course, bungee jumping, a giant slide, rock climbing and the return of the popular mechanical bull. Kids can enjoy the “crazy hair” (The Studio by Angi ), face painting, temporary tattoo, and costume dress up booths. Photographers will be on hand to capture the wild moments. Every child attending the Festival can get a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. They can decorate these in our arts and crafts area, where they can also make a fairy or pirate lantern, spin art, giant bubbles, sand and wax art, and see artists giving demonstrations. The exclusive children’s stage will be busy with performing groups all day to dazzle and entertain the youngsters. The main entertainment stage near gourmet alley, will be alive with energy from 10AM to 6PM, as the Festival goers enjoy local school talent from Castillero, Bret Harte, Leland, Pioneer and Valley Christian, and studio talent which will be alternated between professional band performances from well-known local groups including Free Falling, Nuthin Fancy, & The Dead Poser’s Society. Recharge at “Gourmet Alley” which will have pizza, barbecue chicken, falafel, garlic fries, desserts and more! Represented will be Amato Pizzeria, The Sandwich Mill, LaVictoria Taqueria, Almaden Sonoma Chicken Coop, Assyrian Evangelical Church, Kiwanis, Rotary Club, South Hills Community Church, Cooler Than Ice, Dippin Dots, Peter’s Kettle Corn, Truffle Gateau, Nan’s Food Gourmet and more! All the vendors are adhering to our rules to ensure this Festival is a Zero Waste Event certified by the City of San Jose. The Festival was certified as a Zero Waste 06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Event by the City in 2010 and the Festival is planning ahead for the Zero Waste certification in 2011 by reducing and recycling solid waste. In 2010 we recycled over 70% of our waste. Festival goers are helping conserve the earth’s resources for future generations. Enjoy fine wine and beer selections from local wineries and breweries. Purchase your Festival glass – either at Festival or prior to the event for a reduced price at one of over 24 local merchants (listed on our website). At Festival, there will also be reusable water bottles for sale that can be refilled at no additional cost at water stations throughout the Festival grounds. Support for the Festival comes from many places and we thank our sponsors for their contributions. Please visit their booths at the Festival. We would also like to thank Irma Longley for donating her original artwork for the festival poster. To make park access simple, the Almaden Valley Women’s Club (AVWC) has arranged for free parking and shuttle service from the Santa Clara County Water District and VTA. Please remember to keep your pets at home, as they are not allowed in the park due to city regulations. The AVWC is a non-profit organization started in 1965 with the purpose to stimulate interest in the social, civic and cultural improvement of the Almaden community. All proceeds from the Festival are used to serve the Almaden community and those of greater San Jose and go to non-profit organizations and local schools through scholarships and community grants. The members of the AVWC are all volunteers; none are paid for their time. They also encourage local artists, including children. A logo contest is sponsored each year for students who attend school within the 95120 zip code. This year’s festival logo winner is Andy Sanchez who attends the Almaden Country School. He won the competition which included 65 entries and was awarded a check for $150.00. Andy’s motivation to design a winning logo came from his desire to contribute to his sister’s college fund.

I

am David Fong. I was born and raised in Salinas, CA. I grew up with 3 siblings. I moved to San Jose to attend SJSU to pursue a marketing degree. After graduation, I entered the insurance business and during my early years in the industry, I met my lovely wife, Helen. After our short, 8 month courtship, we married in 2004. After fifteen years working in insurance services, I still enjoy it and now work with The New York Life Insurance Company in sales. Helen was born and raised in the Bay Area and grew up with 3 siblings. Helen is a MIS major from SJSU. We have 3 adorable kids, Cassidy (age 5), Preston (age 3), Mikayla (age 1), and a Bichon Frise, named Chanel. Cassidy is an avid reader and enjoys singing and performing in front of an audience. Preston loves playing all types of sports, especially soccer and baseball. Because I have a passion for cooking and enjoy business management, I decided to get involved with Sonoma Chicken Coop, along with some other investors who I am now great friends with. I like to be hands on, so I understand all aspects of our business investment, in order to make accurate

decisions to constantly improve. The ownership in the Sonoma Chicken Coop has been a pleasure and a great opportunity. In fact, I have a strong interest in opening more restaurants, and have a few fellow investors interested in expanding with me. It is a great way to get involved with the community. Helen recently launched the well-received cupcake operation at the Coop. It began as a one-time hobby, but is now a permanent menu item due to demand. If you run into us at the Coop, and possibly my family on the weekends, come say hello. As a family, we attend the Family Community Church in San Jose. We enjoy visiting new places together, attending sporting events, and entertaining friends and family over home-cooked meals.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Please enjoy getting to know these hard-working business-owners better, as they keep our community flowing positively with their support through taxes as well as fundraisers and donations to improve schools and charities. They also choose to participate in 95120 Magazine to reach our readers to build awareness for their business, while supporting promotion of our local Heroes and Leaders.

M

y name is Julie Cavanaugh and I’ve lived in Almaden, off and on, since my family moved here in 1983 from Baltimore, Maryland. I attended Leland High School before leaving for college. My parent’s home was on Little Falls Drive at the back stop and crosswalk of the Simonds Elementary School baseball field. We often joked that we knew all the kids playing Little League with my two younger brothers, because they came over for snacks and restroom breaks! Both my brothers attended Simonds, then Castillero and finally Bellarmine before leaving for college themselves. We have all returned to the Almaden and San Jose area. My entire family, (my brothers, their wives, their kids, and my Mom) all live within 15 minutes of each other and we are very close. After college, returning to San Jose and marrying my fabulous husband, Chris, we moved back to Almaden 5 years ago with our two beautiful girls, Ellie, (age 11, entering 6th grade next fall at Castillero), and Ryan, almost 2. We have been so blessed to move into a neighborhood full of great families with great kids. We are very attached to our friends and neighbors. Chris was an Olympic swimmer and frequently does talks when Ellie has “bring a parent to school day”! We are members of AVAC and I see lots of clients and friends there daily. Our home is near Quicksilver County Park so we frequent the trails. We LOVE the Almaden lifestyle and community and having spent a few years in Almaden as a teenager, when we moved here, there was an immediate sense of comfort and community. 10 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

I’ve been an interior designer my entire adult life. This isn’t something I happened to try when another career path closed. My passion and intuition for good design is the foundation of my business. I’ve spent 15 years creating beautifully orchestrated living spaces. My handson approach to each project results in pure, clean design, layered with beautiful, aesthetic styling. My attention to detail gives seamless continuity to each project. My projects have earned several ASID awards, have been published extensively and I’ve even been featured as a guest designer on HGTV. It’s tremendously fun when a client’s home lands on the cover of a magazine! They’re always so proud and it gives me so much gratification to know that my work and my job gives my clients so much happiness. I am not what the industry refers to as a “thumb print” designer, meaning a reflection of the designers’ stylings. My portfolio is an eclectic blend of styles and designs that reflect the homeowner’s tastes and passions. I welcome anyone to stop into the beautiful Los Gatos Showroom or call me for an in home consultation. You can see my work on the web site: www.design101interiors.com. You’ll notice we do a lot of kitchens, bathrooms, and furnishings! I look forward to meeting more Almaden families.

David Lee, Autobahn Los Gatos

I

was born at O’Conner Hospital. After graduating from Gunderson, I worked at a Mercedes shop in Campbell for a Swiss man. He introduced me to Marlies, who visited the US to learn English, and encouraged me to visit his hometown. Since I was young and free spirited, I decided to travel to Switzerland. I loved it so much I threw out my return ticket! I got to know Marlies well and we married. We rented a small apartment for a year, then we returned to the U.S. and moved to Almaden. I began working at Stevens Creek BMW (SCB). In 1991 the recession hit and the SCB owners talked of letting people go. I decided it was time I opened my own shop. Twenty years later, I am happily still at Autobahn Los Gatos serving customers (many are neighbors), who have been trusting me through the years to satisfy their service and repair needs. We have two children who attended Williams, Bret Harte and Leland. For fun, I partake in the Ironman Triatholon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride & 26.2 mile marathon). See my ad on page 15

Supriya Maniar, Almaden Physical Therapy

I

t had always been my dream to run my own clinic. My dream came true when I moved to beautiful Almaden Valley with my husband Ameesh and two kids in 2003. My son Malhar, age 18, is a graduate from Leland High School and a freshman at UC Riverside. My daughter Shalika, age 10, is starting at Bret Harte this fall. I have been a Physical Therapist for the last 29 years. I graduated in 1983 from M. S. University in India and worked in England before moving to CA in 1987. I am a therapist at heart and businesswoman second. I believe that the best results come from a therapist’s dedication to treatment and patient care. I also believe that giving back to the community and supporting local schools and charity events are a way of life. Since starting Almaden Physical Therapy four years ago I have been blessed to have very good support from the local community and I want to thank them all for being a part of my life. Building Your Business Contacts

H

ow’s your business? Could it use a boost? Would you like to do business with high-quality people and make contacts that believe in reciprocity? Is making an impact on the community and creating good will important to you? Part of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Almaden Valley Business Association (ABA) offers great networking opportunities through our qualified referral network, enabling high quality member-to-member referrals. The people advertising on these two pages represent the successful businesses that are already a part of the Chamber and the ABA. These folks and many other members like them are in the referral mindset, viewing each business interaction as an opportunity for mutual success. Good business owners are also good neighbors, and community outreach benefits both your neighborhood and your business. The Almaden Business Association knows that creating good will is an important aspect of all successful businesses, so in addition to establishing lasting business contacts, the ABA also supports local non-profits; we were proud to donate $500 to the Almaden Valley Counseling Service recently, raised as part of a networking event held at Boulder Ridge Golf and Country Club. The ABA has also been a vital part of the Almaden Relay for Life. If you believe in the Almaden Community as we do, and want to belong to an organization of like-minded people supporting local businesses and nonprofits, you owe it to yourself to check out the ABA. Come to one of our future events and see what we can do for your business. Join us. Build your business and build your community. Contact Rick Gerhardt at rickg@sjchamber.com or call 408-291-5288.

“YES, you can take it with you!!!” Property tax breaks

S

o, you would move, but you don’t want to give up those low property taxes even though you only really use 50% of your current home and the yard work has become a real pain. “Think again, Bunkie!!” There are plenty of places near and far inside California where you can take those great tax rates with you. Everyone knows about Prop 13 and how it keeps our property taxes low, but if you’re a Boomer you have a chance to move and take that great tax rate with you. As long as you are over 55 you can buy another home anywhere in Santa Clara County of equal or less value to your current home and take your tax basis with you. What’s the catch? You can only do it once, so choose wisely. “But, Rich, everything is so expensive in this county, isn’t there somewhere else I can go??” The answer is a resounding, “YES”!!! This part becomes a little more difficult because there are only a few counties that allow this type of transfer; they are Alameda, El Dorado, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Ventura. But, there are plenty of communities in those counties for you to have a great choice. You see, you’re not locked in (to your current residence) because of low property taxes, and it is up to you to start looking for an opportunity to improve your situation. There’s no better time to make that move then when there are lots of homes to choose from and that’s Right Now!!! Call me and I’ll help you explore all your options, Rich Crowley, Real Estate Broker serving Almaden since 1975

Wall Street Journal

Against a backdrop of gloomy financial and housing news on the national level, it was interesting to open the Wall Street Journal last week and see in big, bold headlines: Why It’s Time to Buy. As the Journal put it, “The clouds haven’t quite parted, but the long-term case for home ownership is looking stronger.” Journal reporters Ruth Simon and Jessica Silver-Greenberg researched and wrote one of the most thorough and rationally analyzed articles about the market in quite some time. Far from being Pollyanna-ish, they acknowledged the economic headwinds facing the market and the clouds overhead. However, they also spent a great deal of time arguing the positives for buyers today as well as the long-term investment opportunities. “Despite all the gloom... there are growing indications that it is a good time to buy,” the Journal reporters noted. “Mortgage rates, which fell to 4.55%... are near 50-year lows. Homes have become more affordable than they have been in years. According to Moody’s Analytics, the ratio of home prices to income is now 20.9% lower than the

15-year average through 2010 and 12.5% lower than the 1989-2004 average. A historic glut of homes, meanwhile, has created a buyer’s market. There were about 15 million vacant homes in the U.S. last year—some 3.1 million more than normal.” Simon and Silver-Greenberg then said what Realtors have been telling clients: “Such conditions might not last long,” they warned. “Moody’s Analytics predicts that the number of distressed sales will begin to fall in 2013, and that prices will begin to edge upward then. Home building is at a virtual standstill, so the supply overhang is not likely to get much worse. Meanwhile, demographic indicators such as “household formation”— the number of new households each year—are on the rise, and promise to take a bite out of the glut in coming years.” In addition, of course, the national situation can differ greatly from the micro-areas in and around Silicon Valley. If you have any questions about your specific neighborhood, please ask. If you have a friend who is thinking of buying or selling, I would appreciate the referral.

ello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF). 10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN TM

n early 1877, the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Company hired Arthur Foote as the mining engineer. As he and his bride arrived in New Almaden, his bride Mary reported that “… we might live on our hill windward of the camp smells.” Their home was on a knoll above and to the right of the Day Tunnel, in an area of Englishtown called Gabbletown. Mary settled in

her small cabin with a maid. She observed that her husband’s habits were not well received by the company management. The Randol administration had a prohibition against smoking in the office and temperance was an additional mission. Arthur, however, continued to smoke and drink.

Mary Hallock was already known to the New York based Scribner’s magazine and had illustrated several magazines since 1872. Shortly after arriving at New Almaden, she sketched and wrote a short story, “A California Mining Camp”, which provided a great description of life on mine hill. This was her first published story. She would go on to write 27 other short stories and sketches, mostly published in Scribner’s Magazine and its successor, Century. While writing these stories she continued to create illustrations for major nineteenth century authors, including Henry Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Bret Harte. She also wrote sixteen children’s stories, including her first in 1875, “The Picture in the Fireplace Bedroom,” and two that were published in 1878, including “A Muchacho of the Mexican Camp”, about life in our own Mexican Town, just above English Town.

Her first novel, “The Led-horse Claim” was published in 1883 and she went on to write seventeen more novels. “Foote’s images of the far west differed sharply from those offered by male artists and writers of the time. She depicted a more domestic west of families and settlements rather than a wild west of soldiers, American Indians and cowboys. Her story about living in mining camps attracted the attention of a Stanford professor, Wallace Stegner. In 1971, he published a Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Angle of Repose. According to local lore, this novel mirrors Foote’s then unpublished memoir. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mary Hallock Foote’s books rivaled in popularity with those of Bret Harte and Mark Twain. Most of her books are in print and may be purchased on line. Some of the books mentioned here are also available at the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum. Arthur Foote resigned under pressure of the Quicksilver Mining Company manager, J B Randol, 13 months after their arrival at New Almaden. The couple and their newborn son Arthur said, “Goodbye to Mother Fall” (who managed the boarding house in English Camp) and they received “smiles from all the groups we passed – to see Mr. Foote wheeling his own baby, as a man should do on a Sunday.” While here, she established a home in New Almaden, illustrated several sketches, wrote three published works and bore a child in just over a year. The family moved on to Leadville, CO, to Mexico and finally to the North Star mine in Grass Valley where the family retired.

A Tradition of Compassion T

he Assistance League® of San Jose (ALSJ), which is a chapter of National Assistance League® founded in 1919 is comprised of volunteer members who predominantly reside in Almaden, and was in fact launched in Almaden in June of 1983 with 66 members led by Pat Borges. Today, amongst their 100 members, there is still one active charter member, Lynda Tomasello who was recently recognized, along with many other amazing ALSJ volunteers during their Bon Voyage End-of-Year Luncheon which celebrated ALSJ’s wonderful year as they reached their targeted goals. Lynda shares her feelings, “You may ask why I have remained a member for 28 years. I love this organization so much that as long as there is at least one project left and one person for me to do it with, I will remain a member. I feel my time is very valuable and I know I am donating it for the greater good of the community through ALSJ.” I was privileged to attend this benevolent event, which was held at the always-extraordinary La Foret restaurant, and watch the members in action. Their funloving and creative award presentations, ranging from stellar meeting attendance to multiple program involvement to outgoing/incoming board members and everything in between, illustrated their proneness to ensuring everyone’s self-comfort and their philosophy that individual achievements better the group as a whole. As I sat across from Gretchen, their selfless leader this year and next, I couldn’t help mentioning that I felt like I was at a family luncheon. They make one feel special. The members are so welcoming, charming and close that the bond they share is as real and special as the service they provide to improve the lives of the disadvantaged and seniors within our greater San Jose neighborhood.

“Assistance League has been a very rewarding experience. It’s definitely a “hands-on” organization and I enjoy working with such a dynamic group of women. The interaction with our clients is so fulfilling; whether it’s measuring school children for uniforms or testing preschoolers for Amblyopia, you feel that what you do is very worthwhile and important. I’m so pleased to be serving as president for a second year.” Gretchen Coelho, President Let’s Review Assistance League outreach programs. Operation School Bell® This program provides new clothing to disadvantaged elementary school children to enhance self-esteem and academic achievement. This program began nearly fifty years ago as a onewoman effort and is now the signature national philanthropic program for Assistance League. As of their last fiscal year ending May 31st, ALSJ alone provided 2,200+ children at 27 schools 2 uniforms each. The ALSJ members will be delivering clothes to children in need during September 2011, so if you would like to get involved, contact them now.“I have seen Operation School Bell® grow from a $1500 annual budget in 1994 to a fantastic $55K for our needy students in 2011! This year we will furnish new uniforms for more than 2500 students. We added many other worthy community service programs along the way,” adds Lynda Tomasello, such as:... Continued next page >

Kids on the Block Explores, through puppetry, issues of disability, cultural differences, social problems and acceptance of self and others. This bullying prevention program is targeted to 3rd graders. This year they visited 8 schools with 840 3rd grade students. Operation Hug-A-Bear In a cooperative program with city and county agencies, the chapter provides stuffed bears used to ease the trauma of an accident or abuse. Established in 1988. This year 175 were given to the Children’s Interview Center and 49 to Next Door to Domestic Violence. Project S.E.E. (Screening Eyes Early) This project provides vision screening for children. As of their last fiscal year, 1,250 children at 19 preschools were tested for Amblyopia (lazy eye) and other vision problems in 32 screening sessions. If not detected and treated early, there are serious complications as an adult. About 20 children were referred to doctors with about 15 needing glasses! The ALSJ volunteers are trained by Prevent Blindness of Northern California. Established in 2003.

Senior Bingo The volunteers visit medical residential facilities (Stonebrook on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and Winchester Sub-Acute on the 4th Thursday of the month) to provide well-received games for seniors. Established in 1983. Readers are Leaders These volunteers visit classrooms regularly, coming prepared to entertain, enlighten and encourage children by reading age and topic appropriate books throughout the year. This year 825 students in grades 1-3 (32 classrooms) were read to and each class library gifted 2 books per visit. When the book Worms was read, as a special prop, ALSJ member Betty Steinhoff and her husband donated 32 homemade worm farms in plastic boxes (donated by Tap Plastic) and gifted these along with the book to each class. Caring Hands This program supports the Valley Medical Pediatric Unit by donating hand-made blankets and caps for premature babies. The ALSJ members involved meet the 2nd Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m. at the Almaden Library. Anyone who enjoys knitting is welcome to donate or attend. This year they made 113 baby blankets, 138 baby caps and 29 chemo hats for Valley. Becky TheyO’Connor also donated 6 afghans to Acute Care and 25 scarves to Sacred Heart. How to Join? Most new members (with availability to attend monthly meetings every 3rd Thurs. at noon) join in August. Interested persons are invited to a New Member Coffee Meeting where each Chair discusses their program. Two weeks later, new members attend an orientation, and are assigned a mentor to ease program integration. “I feel very fortunate and honored to have been asked to join this past year. I think all the philanthropic programs performed by ALSJ are not only contributing to worthy causes, but also enriching the lives of those of us who provide them. The ALSJ members’ talents and skills compliment the services performed. The friendships I have made are an added plus. I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful organization,” explains new member Gloria Cutshall. If interested in joining, contact Rachel Hackett ALSJ 1st VP in Charge of Membership via email r-hackett@sbcglobal.net or phone 408-268-7689.

ports and energy drink consumption by adolescents is widespread and continues to grow. A recent survey of adolescents found that more than half had used sports or energy drinks in the two weeks prior to taking the survey. These drinks have become popular because they taste good and are perceived as being a healthy alternative to soda. In addition, ever since the beverage companies agreed to phase out full calorie sodas from schools, they are now heavily promoting sports drinks in their place. Yet these drinks are not necessarily as healthy as they are advertised and in fact many are full of sugar and calories as well as other components that at the least are unnecessary and at most potentially harmful. Sports drinks and energy drinks are different products. Sports drinks are intended to be used during or after exercise to replenish water and electrolytes lost through sweating and provide quick energy to fatigued muscles. Energy drinks on the other hand, typically contain stimulants, such as caffeine, that are intended to keep you awake or give you a brief boost in energy and should never be used by children. The most common additives in sports drinks are carbohydrates (aka sugar), electrolytes (usually sodium and potassium), proteins or amino acids and vitamins (usually vitamin B and C). The high carbohydrate content of these drinks may be beneficial to provide quick energy to the muscles during or after prolonged and vigorous activity. Ingestion of proteins or amino acids shortly after vigorous exercise has been shown to help muscle recovery, and consequently, many sports drinks contain amino acids. But there is an alternate drink available that has about as much protein as these drinks, with less sugar and it is overall healthier... skim milk. Milk can be a great post-exercise beverage. Additionally, the other heavily marketed effects of amino acids such as improved immune function have not been supported by research. The amount of sodium and potassium in sports drinks varies widely and the need for electrolyte replacement generally only occurs during prolonged, vigorous activity in very hot or humid conditions. And as for vitamins, there is no advantage to consuming these during or after exercise. Sports drinks are not without their drawbacks. They tend to be high in calories which many kids do not need. Due to the high sugar and citric acid content and their acidic pH, sports drinks can cause erosion of dental enamel and are becoming a common cause of dental cavities in adolescents who frequently consume sports drinks. The bottom line is that while these drinks may have some utility and benefits for kids who participate in prolonged vigorous activity, for the vast majority of kids who only participate in light to moderate exercise, water is just fine. Additionally, the beneficial components of sports drinks can easily be obtained from a well balanced diet. Lastly, because of the extra calories in sports drinks, they should not be used for daily consumption but after or during exercise only.

Do You Make it Easy to Quit?

R

ecently, I competed in the tough mudder on Lake Arrowhead. The event involved roughly 10+ miles of running up and down mountainous terrain and conquering obstacles, which included, submerged ice baths, log carrying, swimming ice cold lakes, being hit by high pressure hoses, and as a finish, shocked by 10,000 volts while running through mud.

Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit -Vince Lombardi It was extremely tough. Most of the competitors were in their physically peak years, while I celebrated 40. At times the event felt like a casting for the movie Troy. What made the event so difficult is that I mis-trained. Sprint work at sea level left me unprepared for the long mountain climbs. So, at mile 3, I began to cramp. Some occasional bananas and water eased the discomfort, but by mile 5 my legs were close to locking. Finishing the race was in jeopardy, but I maintained. At mile 7, I was done. My leg muscles were locking and I was beaten. I couldn’t do any more, and I had to quit. I thought of my students… what would they say about me quitting? In martial arts, we always talk about doing your best and persevering, but the truth was, I was in massive pain. It is also important to know the limits of your body. At 7200 feet above sea level, I experienced a moment that may be one of the most significant in my life. At the peak, I realized that there were no easy ways down the mountain. I could quit, but I would still have to walk at least 2 miles to get back to the bottom, so I endured. Eventually, I reached the finish line, exhausted and physically done. My 5 year old daughter Rhiannon looked up at me, “Daddy, I am so proud of you, we don’t quit do we?” “No sweetheart, we don’t”, I replied. I was relieved, excited, exhausted with many other emotions transitioning through me. Most of all… I was proud. I am thankful that it wasn’t easy for me to quit. I am thankful for the martial arts and Pilates training (with my wife) that put me in the position to succeed. If not Black Belt or Pilates, I encourage you to take on an obstacle and make it hard to quit. Believe that you will achieve. Take action and do it. Commit to following through. Enjoy the rewards.

Is it Texting... or Sexting?

R

ecently, Congressman Weiner was forced to resign from office after it was disclosed that he was sexting with at least six women. “Sexting” is the sharing of nude or sexually explicit messages or images, typically via cell phones messaging. As life changing as this decision has been for Congressman Weiner and his adult recipients, when it comes to teenagers engaging in similar activities, the consequences can be even more dramatic. Believe it or not, a recent MTV-AP poll of teens between 14-17 years of age revealed the following staggering statistics: • 24% of underaged teens are involved in some king of naked sexting; • 13% of underaged girls, and 9% of underaged boys, have shared a naked photo or video of themselves; • 61% who have sent a naked photo or video were pressured by someone else to do so at least once. • 1 in 5 have passed images they received along to someone else, with 55% of them sending them to more than one person. • Only 14% of those originating the sext expected them to be shared without permission. The bottom line is that more and more teens are succumbing to peer pressure and sending sexts. What they don’t consider is the wide circulation it may receive, as these pictures are transmitted in seconds to countless recipients, and once released, these images may be in cyberspace forever… a perpetual humiliation resulting from a momentary lapse in judgment. If that wasn’t bad enough, some kids are then “sextorted” – pushed by older teens or adult predators into providing sex and/or more images to keep their blackmailers from revealing the images or videos. Sexting can also result in cyberbullying, particularly from girls. While boys almost never share pictures of other boys, girls share sexual images of other girls in what is called “slut shaming.” In fact, several suicides have been linked to girls who sexted their boyfriend, and after the break-up, discovered the photo has been widely viewed around school. Obviously, the regret and name-calling from other kids is pain enough… but what about the legal consequences? Sexting pictures or videos of underage children can create both criminal and civil liability for many involved. For example, imagine a 17 old boy asks his 15 year old girlfriend to send him a sexually provocative video. The boy then sends them to his friend. The boy may be tried as an adult and found in violation of several statutes requiring mandatory prison time and registration as a sex offender. The girl could be brought up on charges of producing child pornography (even though the pictures are of herself). His friend also could be found guilty of receiving child pornography. Whether these crimes would actually be charged is up to the prosecutor, but these hypothetical possibilities reflect the penalties that can result from “harmless fun.” On top of that, the families of the girl might bring claims for civil damages, on the basis of harassment or other causes of action related to the dissemination of those photos. Her school may also have civil liability if it became aware of the sexting and failed to take appropriate action such as contacting law enforcement. This was certainly not a topic I was looking forward to writing about…but recent events reinforce how important it is that, as parents, we are aware of the pervasiveness of sexting and talk to our teens about it. Their lives may depend on it. The above article is provided for informational purposes only. It is not legal advice, nor does it create an attorney-client or any other relationship.
