ResidualFeedIntake(RFI)
RFI:residualfeedintake,RFI,isameasureoffeed efficiencycalculatedasthedifferencebetweenandanimal’s actualfeedintakeanditspredictedfeedintake,foragiven levelofproduction.WhenRFIisusedasageneticselection tool,theresultingprogenywillconsumelessfeedforthe samelevelofproduction.RFIisindependentofgrowth, bodysizeandotherperformancetraits(Kochetal.,1963), selectionforanimalswithlowRFIwillleadtoreducedfeed intakeandimprovedfeedefficiencywithoutcompromising bodysize,carcassqualityorgrowth.LowerRFIvaluesare morefavorable,cattlewithlowRFIvaluesaremoreefficient thancattlewithhighRFIvalues.
RFIRank:ananimal’snumericalrankofitsphenotypicRFI withinthetrialgroup.
RADG:residualaveragedailygain,thedifferencebetween ananimal’sactualweightgainanditspredictedgainbased onitsdrymatterintake,bodyweightmaintenanceandfat cover.AlthoughtheconceptofRADGappearstobesimilar toRFIastheybothcontainthesameorsimilarcomponents, thetwoconceptsworkinverydifferentways.Residual averagedailygainputseachanimal’sfeedintakeonthe sameplayingfieldandlooksatdifferencesinaveragedaily
gainwhileRFIputseachanimal’sgrowthandbodysizeon thesameplayingfieldandlooksatdifferencesinfeed intake.WhenselectingforRADG,cattlewithhighervalues aremoredesirablethanthosewithlowervalues,meaning thattheyhadgreaterADGforthesameamountoffeed. Thismeasureisnotindependentofbodysizesocaution shouldbeusedifmaturecowsizeisimportanttoyourherd.
