WEDNESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2025

INTRODUCTION

On Wednesday 3 September 2025 we are excited to offer 80 two-year old Angus bulls for sale at Hillgrove, Boorowa.
In Boorowa we have been tested by the season. A soft spring followed by a long dry summer presented us with some challenges through autumn and winter. We have done our best to hold stock where possible by feeding, agisting and even droving our cattle through the drought. Our team have stepped up to meet these challenges - and we take this opportunity to thank them. Now we hope to see the reward as we turn the corner out of winter and glimpse the early signs of spring and a rising market.
You could draw a similar analogy with the global beef market which is on the launch pad for a terrific recovery. The USA has finally muddled its way out of drought - this has taken longer and cut deeper into their cow herd than expected. With the US now in rebuild phase we are seeing prices double what we have seen recently in Australia.
With strong domestic consumption, the US are now looking to shift less beef products into export markets (I don’t think we are going to see US beef on our supermarket shelves anytime soon). This will provide increased opportunities for Australian beef to fill the gaps. If you look at our major export partners like China, Japan, Korea for each market where the USA has decreased export volumes our Aussie beef has filled the gap.
Now to the bulls…
In our sire selection we continue to focus towards breeding for the optimum, not the maximum. The core focus in our bull breeding is for focused carcass genetics from high performing, moderate, fertile and functional cattle.
This year’s bulls are the product of a cow herd which is run under commercial parameters with all females assessed annually to ensure they are meeting our breed values.
Over 90% of our bulls are from AI sires. Landfall Newground is well represented with 23 sons, as are Dunoon Prime Minister with 16 sons, Karoo K12 Realist with 15 sons, Clunie Range Plantation with 13 sons and Murdeduke Quarterback 9 sons.
Once again, all of our 2025 sale bulls have been successfully parent verified using genomic testing.
Over 60% of our sale bulls have been working as yearlings in our commercial and stud programs. Lots 1 to 16 have been used over our stud females here at Hillgrove and Lots 17 to 51 have been used in our commercial herd at Breakfast Creek. Before they go out to work and again before this sale all bulls must pass a structural assessment and fertility test. This process gives us increased confidence in selling the bulls. The bulls have recently come onto grazing crop.
As a stud we remain focused on our in-herd measurements, genomics and EBV performance to ensure our cattle perform at each stage of the production cycle.
This year’s bulls demonstrate:
• Calving ease
- 29 bulls below breed average for birth weight
- 43 bulls above breed average for calving ease direct
- 49 bulls above breed average for calving ease daughters
• Performance
- 54 bulls above breed average for 200 day weight
- 58 bulls above breed average for 400 day weight
- 56 bulls above breed average for 600 day weight
- 52 bulls above breed average for docility
• Carcass quality
- 44 bulls above breed average for EMA
- 49 bulls above breed average for Rib
- 58 bulls above breed average for IMF (45 bulls have an IMF greater than 3)
• Fertility
- 69 bulls above breed average for scrotal size
• Performance indices
- 62 bulls above breed average for $A
- 67 bulls above breed average for $A-L
If you would like to inspect the bulls before sale day please give me a call (0403 180 804). They still have some growing to do in the lead up to sale day - particularly after a dry Autumn and working this year.
The bulls will be videoed on Tuesday 12 August and footage will be on our website later that week.
We are looking forward to seeing you on sale day. If you are unable to make it, the sale will be run through Auctions Plus.

THE PERFORMANCE OF KENNY’S CREEK 2025 SALE BULLS
THE KENNY’S CREEK PROGRAM
The selection and breeding program at Kenny’s Creek is driven by a rigorous approach to genetic selection. Our key motivation is to produce trouble free performance bulls for our clients.
SIRE SELECTION
Kenny’s Creek is at the forefront of utilising structural information about our breeding herd, with each animal assessed rigorously. We have developed systems to analyse the data collected and rank the performance of sire and cow lines, enabling us to react early to structural issues inherited by sire lines.
Our sires are comprehensively examined, including progeny, dams, granddams, sisters and any other family members available. Through tightly researched breeding principles and high accuracy parents, we aim for a low cull
LIVESTOCK

rate in bulls presented for sale – we believe this means more predictable progeny for our clients’ herds.
Once sires have passed this assessment we then look at EBVs.
INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT
All our bulls have been independently evaluated for structural soundness and fertility. The detailed methodology for these assessments is set out under ‘Performance and Animal Health’.
BUY BACK PROGRAM
Each year we buy back heifers and feeder steers from our Kenny’s Creek Angus clients.
Our objective with the buy back program is to provide premium prices to our bull clients.
OUR GUARANTEE
To the best of our knowledge all bulls are in sound working condition at the time of the sale.
If, during the next 12 months, a bull becomes infertile or breaks down, provided it is not caused by injury sustained or illness contracted after leaving Kenny’s Creek Angus, we will:
• replace the bull with as close a match as possible; or
• grant a full credit (less any salvage value) for any purchase at future Kenny’s Creek Angus sales.
Bump in average price for Kenny's Creek sale
BY HANNAH POWE
THE average was on the up at the Burton Taylor family's annual Kenny's Creek Angus bull sale held at Hillgrove, Boorowa, as buyers came chasing bulls with high growth rates.
Achieving an average of $9931 - up $1900 on last year's sale result - across the 58 of 61 bulls sold to a top price of $16,000, stud principal Sam Burton Taylor said they were pleased with how the sale went.
"We have focused on our birth to growth spread, and that is what buyers were after today. We are happy with the value for buyers, and everyone got bulls within their specifications," Mr Burton Taylor said.
Two bulls made the top price of $16,000, including Kenny's Creek Prime Minister T68, purchased by repeat buyers Stuart and Charlie French of Manna Station, Corinella near Forbes, who run around 500 crossbred cows. The 880-kilogram son of Dunoon Prime Minister P758 out of the Baldridge Beast Mode B074 daughter in Kenny's Creek Federation Q605 had a scrotal circumference of 41.5 centimetres.
"The Prime Minister and Beast Mode joining has worked well," Mr Burton Taylor said.
Described as a good heifer bull option with figures in the top 5pc of the breed for gestation length and rib and rump fat, and top 10pc for calving ease direct and intramuscular fat, the father-son duo were drawn to Prime Minister T68 for his com-

pleteness and indexes.
"He is a well put together bull that is structurally sound, well-muscled, and his indexes are in the top 20 per cent of the breed," the Frenchs said.
The Frenchs also purchased Kenny's Creek U23, a 502kg yearling son of Karoo K12 Realist N278, to average $11,000 for the pair of bulls. Also knocked down for the $16,000 high price was Kenny's Creek Moe T122 bought by Jock Snodgrass of Cudgell Creek Partnership, Young.
Sired by Chiltern Park Moe M6 and out of Kenny's Creek R672, by Esslemont Loto L3, he weighed 958kg with a 45cm scrotal measurement. Running approximately

280 commercial Angus cows in a self-replacing, spring calving system, Mr Snodgrass sells steers and surplus heifers to feedlots. "He [Moe T122] is a softskinned, well-balanced bull with good bone and growth," Mr Snodgrass said.
"He is an even type of bull... the Moe progeny are consistent. We've seen that both in the draft of bulls and in our herd as well - they continually impress," Mr Burton Taylor said.
Mr Snodgrass also bought Kenny's Creek Plantation
T161, an 892kg Clunie Range Plantation P392 son, for $15,000 to average $15,500. The $10,000 top-priced yearling bull was Kenny's Creek U105. He was purchased by EJ Herbert and Sons, Forbes. With 10 traits in the top 10pc of the Angus breed, Mr Burton Taylor said the yearling bull had desirable low birthweight to high growth, but back to lower mature cow weight type of curve bender people were chasing, with good fertility and carcase figures. Operating online through AuctionsPlus was the Queensland-based Bundulla Grazing, Mungallala, which purchased six bulls to a top of $8000, twice, to average $7167. In total, eight bulls sold to remote buyers. Other volume buyers included Cleverdon Agriculture, Nubba, with four to a top of $9000 and an average of $8500, Lugano Pastoral Co, Rugby, with three to a top of $12,000 to average $10,333, and Ford Cattle Co, Tea Gardens, three for a $14,000 top and a $10,667 average. The Falls Partnership, Neville, also bought three to a top of $13,000 to average $10,667. Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co, Forbes, conducted the sale with Luke Whitty taking bids from the rostrum.

PERFORMANCE AND ANIMAL HEALTH
HEALTH STATUS
Pestivirus: Pestivirus is an endemic viral disease in Australia. There is serological evidence of pestivirus in over 70% of beef herds in NSW. The Kenny’s Creek pestivirus management plan mandates annual vaccinations of all cattle. Each of our sale bulls have been PI-Antigen tested for Pestivirus (ear notch test) and received a negative result.
For current list of vaccinations, see The Checklist on next page.
INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT
BY CHRIS SAUNDERS FROM PRECISION BREEDING
All of our bulls have been independently evaluated for structural soundness and fertility, in particular:
1. Semen tested
2. Scrotal palpated
3. Structurally assessed
HEALTH MANAGEMENT
After you have purchased a low risk bull it is important to manage him correctly to ensure a long, effective working life. Ensure you vaccinate your bulls annually with 7 in 1 and vibrio vaccine.
All Kenny’s Creek Angus bulls have had their initial two vaccinations and now only require annual vaccination.
Monitor the body condition of your bulls and maintain a condition score of 3. Young bulls require good nutrition. Don’t allow your bulls to become overly fat, as fat bulls have a greater risk of injury and also achieve poorer conception rates.
The variation in climatic conditions (temperature extremes) and grazing conditions in Central and Northern Queensland can have a large effect on the quality of semen the bull produces. It is recommended that after you purchase a new bull and relocate him to a new grazing environment that you have his semen examined prior to joining.
MONITORING NEW BULLS
Any new bulls being joined for their first time are at a greater risk of achieving poor conception rates due to injury or infection.
It is therefore important to monitor new bulls closely.
What to look out for:
• Lameness
• Swelling in the area of the penis or testicles
• Penis unable to be exteriorised from the sheath
• Inflamed or reddened penis
• Bulls attempting to mount but not serving
• Any signs of systemic disease i.e. lethargic
• Cows still in estrus towards the end of the joining period
In well managed herds we expect 60–70% of conception to occur in the first 3 weeks. It is extremely important to monitor new bulls during this period. Cows joined to new bulls need to be inspected 2–3 times per week for the first 3 weeks then weekly thereafter.
It is important to remember that problems can develop during the joining period. Some of these problems cannot be prevented, so early detection is the only way to minimise their impact.
FEET AND LEGS
Great attention is paid to the feet and legs of animals as part of the Kenny’s Creek breeding program to ensure longevity. It is important to note that no feet are ever trimmed and any animals with structural issues are removed from the breeding herd.
TEMPERAMENT
Temperament has been assessed constantly across the whole herd over the last 35 years. All working bulls are selected in part for their libido and fertility attributes and as such require an understanding management approach to their handling.

MID JULY 2025 ANGUS BREEDPLAN REFERENCE TABLES
UNDERSTANDING THE TRANS TASMAN ANGUS CATTLE EVALUATION
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus influenced beef cattle. The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility).
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation is an international genetic evaluation and includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and Angus New Zealand databases, along with selected information from the American and Canadian Angus Associations.
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation utilises a range of genetic evaluation software, including the internationally recognised BLUPF90 family of programs, and BREEDPLAN® beef genetic evaluation analytical software, as developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England, and Meat and Livestock Australia Limited (MLA).
WHAT IS AN EBV?
An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).
EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and a historical genetic level (i.e. group of animals) within the TACE genetic evaluation, and are reported in the units in which the measurements are taken.
USING EBVS TO COMPARE THE GENETICS OF TWO ANIMALS
TACE EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected difference equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (e.g. they are joined to the same animal/s).
For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10 kg heavier at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40 kg (i.e. 20 kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400 kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (i.e. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
USING EBVS TO BENCHMARK AN ANIMAL’S GENETICS WITH THE BREED
EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus or Angus infused animals recorded with Angus Australia.
To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to the EBV reference tables, which provide:
• the breed average EBV
• the percentile bands table
The current breed average EBV is listed on the bottom of each page in this publication, while the current EBV reference tables are included at the end of these introductory notes.
For easy reference, the percentile band in which an animal’s EBV ranks is also published in association with the EBV.
CONSIDERING ACCURACY
An accuracy value is published with each EBV, and is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV.
The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV.
EBVs with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50-74% as of medium accuracy, 75-90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy.
DESCRIPTION OF TACE EBVS
EBVs are calculated for a range of traits within TACE, covering calving ease, growth, fertility, maternal performance, carcase merit, feed efficiency and structural soundness. Scan the QR code below to read a description of each EBV.
RECESSIVE GENETIC CONDITIONS
The genetic status of an animal is subject to change and will be re-analysed and adjusted each week as DNA test results of relatives are received. For information on recessive genes visit www.angusaustralia.com.au
