Welcome to our 2025 Choice Angus 9th Annual Yearling Bull Sale

It’s our pleasure to welcome you to our 9th Annual Yearling Bull Sale here at Choice Angus. We’ve been fortunate with the weather this year, experiencing a dry summer, followed by much-needed rain from Cyclone Alfred, which has certainly set us up well. At the same time, our thoughts are with the farmers down south, particularly in southern New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, where the dry conditions continue to be a challenge. We know how tough it can be, and we stand with you in hope for a break in the season that will bring much-needed relief.

As always, the variability of the Australian climate continues to influence the industry, with the seasonal conditions often affecting market dynamics. However, we’re optimistic that a shift in weather across the southern regions will lead to positive changes for everyone.

In line with this optimistic outlook, we are excited to offer 58 true yearling bulls in this year’s lineup. Our breeding objectives focus on balance, always keeping the bigger picture in mind. As a commercial operation, we treat every female like a commercial cow, testing them rigorously to ensure they perform under the extreme weather conditions that Mother Nature can throw at us.

Featured Sires:

Knowla So Right S48: The $190,000 top-priced bull at the 2022 Knowla Sale, S48 produces soft, thick sons with ideal birth weight and outstanding carcass quality. His progeny reflect his top-tier genetics.

Knowla Quantum Q41: Known for his lower birth weight and thick body, Q41 also carries good skin and an excellent carcass. He’s a standout for those looking for efficiency and performance.

Sterling Pacific 904: A deep, stout bull with square muscle, Pacific 904 ranks in the top 1% for all growth traits and boasts strong carcass attributes. He’s an all-rounder with great potential.

Millah Murrah Nectar N334: A sire we continually return to for his ability to breed very soft, stylish bulls with exceptional skin. Nectar also carries one of the most extraordinary pedigrees in the breed, thanks to the strong performance of his relatives.

Millah Murrah Rocket Man R38: The $280,000 son of Paratrooper, Rocket Man’s sons are easy-doing, well-muscled, and soft-skinned. His progeny continues to impress with their consistent performance. Milwillah Identity Q104: Purchased in 2021, Identity carries a double cross of Reality. His progeny consistently inherit his softness, good muscle structure, and calm nature, with Reality’s traits continuing to shine through.

Using Yearling Bulls for Real Benefits

Nature intended bulls to work at 12 - 14 months of age as this is when they become sexually mature and are still light and agile enough to learn their new trade without a high risk of injuring themselves.

Bulls who are first put out as two year olds are at higher risk of injury as they are heavier when they are learning the trade.

Management

Yearling bulls are much easier to manage both in and out of the cows as they are out working when their testosterone kicks in and not in a mob of other bulls learning to fight and bully out of sexual frustration.

Joining Heifers

Just because he is a yearling bull does not make him a heifer bull. As with any bull, his effect on calving ease is determined by genetics for birthweight and shape. However, suitable heifer bulls used as yearlings will mean less injuries in heifers as well. Due to their lighter weight they can be used over heifers for more years as you will have them for longer before they reach their mature weight.

Guidelines for using Yearling Bulls

· Don’t put yearling bulls out with older and bigger bulls in their first year as the bigger bulls will injure the yearling bulls while they are serving.

· Only join to a maximum of 35 females in the first year.

· Only join for a maximum of 6 weeks in the first year.

· Ensure the bulls are up to date with parasite control and vaccinations.
