NEW SALE DATE FRIDAY 21 FEBRUARY
A+ FROM 2.30PM - 4.30PM (SA TIME)
Hello All, and welcome to our tenth anniversary On-line Bull Sale.
As I look back on the last ten years of JB Angus, some of my fondest memories are of this wonderful industries people, whose professional services, kind support, and most importantly custom, have helped get us to where we are today. To all those people, I would like to say a special thank you, and bless you all.
JB Angus stud was established back in 2013 with the purchase of just forty cows as my pick of the retiring Hidden Valley Angus. During the next few years, we were fortunate to be able to add both value and diversity to our growing herd, with purchases from the dispersals of two highly successful studs in Coolanna and Anvil, and began our journey in earnest with our first on-line sale back in 2015.
Since those humble beginnings we have continually re-invested in high quality Angus genetics, with embryos from Alpine Angus in Victoria’s high country, along with careful sire selection from both Alpine and Coonamble Angus studs.
During a poor season in W.A. we were offered and graciously accepted, the opportunity to purchase thirty-six un-joined heifers from the heart of the Coonamble herd, W.A.’s leading Angus stud. Located in Bremer Bay with similar environmental conditions to us here on the limestone coast, featuring sandy soils and winter dominate rainfall, these heifers have slotted seamlessly into place.
Following the successful integration of Coonamble blood into our herd here at Naracoorte, opportunity again presented when the Davis family decided to disperse their remaining Autumn calvers, containing some of the finest examples of their most proven and prolific cow lines, resulting in a record-breaking sale!
We were able to secure two fantastic daughters of Coonamble Hector, arguably Australia’s most successful cow maker of the modern era. L339 a granddaughter of the prolific matron A61(and Hectors grandmother) was purchased for $32k, and L109 granddaughter of the highly regarded donor Z2 representing the Wilcoola cow family for $30k. These two cows have formed the backbone of our embryo transfer program for the last two years and will contribute heavily to the ongoing success of the JB brand in the years to come, with the first bull calves to be offered in our 2026 sale.
The breeding philosophy here at JB Angus is a simple one, and has remained unchanged for ten years. Aiming high to produce correct, physically impressive and highly fertile cattle. I have always believed that structural correctness is the most important trait. This leads directly to calving ease, standout phenotype, and the longevity needed to build a productive and profitable cow herd, the backbone of any self-replacing business.
Hand in hand with attractive sound cattle is of course fertility. This is built into our herd through strict culling of empty cows, late calvers and off-types. With those non-negotiables in place, we look to add value with strong breeding values starting with the birth to growth spread as the most profitable, we all get paid by the kilo! We then look to improve carcass value with improved eye muscle area, the backbone of yield, and improved eating quality with higher intra-muscular fat while maintaining adequate fat cover for balanced easy-care cows, and the ability to finish stock in a variety of systems.
More recently through our support of both Naracoorte and Urrbrea high schools, we gain great enjoyment and feedback from both students and staff as to the performance and handling of our cattle, with both schools returning high ranking hoof and carcass results, including twice being named best Angus carcass of show. Well done to all involved.
Baynes Angus has also been giving back to the Kieth community by mentoring local kids to show a Baynes’ heifer at the popular Junior Heifer Expo. Fresh off a win in the intermediate Angus Heifer class with Baynes Ela U4, a daughter of JB Angus S10 owned by Lakala Angus Lucindale, and dutifully shown by Piper Makin. Well done.
We are proud to present for your inspection our 2025 sale line up during the beef week field days on Tuesday the 11th of February. All bulls have been independently assessed, have been semen tested, and are guaranteed ready for work. In this our tenth anniversary sale, we have added a new feature we think you will appreciate, with all sale bulls having been professionally educated by “the Lee’s working dogs”. David and Sarah Lee have built a strong business suppling quality trained working dogs and running highly successful schools, and I highly recommend them for the top class work they provided making all sale bulls dog ready, aiding handling and improving OH&S.
I hope you will consider JB Angus, and join us for our tenth anniversary sale and BBQ, on our BRAND-NEW sale date, Friday the 21st of February. Or online through Auctions Plus, opening at 2.30pm and finishing at 4.30pm S.A. time. Wishing you all the best for the season ahead, Jock Hislop and the Baynes

All JB Angus sale bulls have been independently structurally assessed to maximise the quality of stock offered. All stock have been assessed by Ian Moreland on the 21/12/24
The Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1-9 scoring system for feet and leg structure:
• A score of 5 is ideal
• 4 and 6 show slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals. Any animal scoring 4 and 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program
• 3 and 7 shows greater variation, but would be acceptable in most commercial breeding programs, however seedstock producers should be wary
• 2 and 8 are low scoring animals and have been culled
Reference: 1-5 (half scores permitted) using yard test scale below:
1. Docile
The animal is easily held in the corner and the handler can get close enough to put their stick on the animal.
2. Restless
The animal can be held in the corner but exhibits some restlessness and flicking of the tail. The handler cannot get close enough to put their stick on the animal before it moves away.
3. Nervous
The animal is not easily held in the corner even when the handler is some distance back from the animal, continual movement and tail flicking.
4. Flighty (wild)
The animal cannot be held in the corner, frantically runs the fence line and may jump when penned individually, exhibits long flight distance.
5. Aggressive
Similar behavior to score 4 but is also aggressive towards the handler, stares at the handler and threatens to charge or charges (Handler is advised to exit the yard before the animal actually charges).
