FOREWORD We are in the middle of the year and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has already achieved so much in the tourism sector. We hosted another successful Tourism INDABA in May and KZN was announced as the successful bidder to host “Africa’s Travel INDABA” for the next five years. We also took this opportunity to engage with many buyers and international media, who attended the exhibition and our annual business breakfast, on the latest tourism sector developments that we believe will take KZN to greater heights. It is also thrilling to see that members of the tourism trade remain committed to growing the sector and continue to invest in new properties and upgrading their establishments. Some of these properties are: •

Thonga Beach Lodge in the Elephant Coast upgraded and renovated all their 24 bedrooms. Now guests can enjoy and explore one of Africa’s last unspoilt wilderness beaches in luxury. Isibindi Zulu Lodge in Zululand will reopen in August after undergoing a complete refurbishment, which will include reupholstered furniture at the main lodge area, the lounge and the dining area. Rooms will be redecorated with new furniture and bathrooms will be remodelled. Midlands Saddle and Trout, a stud farm managed by First Group, has undergone a head to toe refurbishment worth R16.7 million. The extensive renovations will include redecorating all 59 chalets and will be completed at the end of the year. Ebandla Hotel will also be opening a new hotel in Jozini at the end of year. The hotel will boast over 50 rooms, conference facilities and a VIP restaurant and bar.

KZN has become a firm favourite for holidaymakers looking for a bit of sun to escape the winter chills. We have some signature events that will definitely provide lots of warmth. • • •

as Brenda Mntambo, Jimmy Dludlu, Ringo Madlingozi, Amanda Black and many more, performing on 24 June at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Port Shepstone. Fashionistas, celebrities, socialites and horse racing enthusiasts will pour into KZN for one of the biggest events on the social calendar of South Africa, the Vodacom Durban July, on 1 July 2017. This year’s event will be themed, “The Colour of Magic”. The Dundee July Rural Horseracing event will be held in Dundee on 22 July 2017. The 38th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) will run between the 13th and the 23rd July 2017.

This year, we will continue with our partnership with the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show to promote intraprovincial travel through the KZN Travel and Adventure Show, running from 30 June to 9 July 2017, at the Durban Exhibition Centre. The show will give visitors a wide range of exciting options of tourism products with special packages and rates. Make sure to pop in to the TKZN stand for some fun activities. Don’t forget to follow us on all our social networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@ Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to be updated on all our upcoming events and to drop us a line and tell us about your exceptional holiday in the Zulu Kingdom, and remember to #GottaLuvKZN We wait with open arms to welcome you to the Zulu Kingdom. EDITOR'S LETTER

industry's excitement!

This year just continues to fly by!

year. Ethekwini also outlined plans to extend the beachfront promenade by a further 3km - very good news indeed!

Most of the past few months has been spent attending launches and amazing events. The BIG one on the tourism calendar, Tourism Indaba, took up a good few days too… Durban is set to to host the event for another FIVE years, much to the local

I was lucky to attend a full day of pampering at The Pearls Mall too! Well… mostly pampering! (There was EXERCISE involved). I was introduced to the truly amazing offering at this boutique centre and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the offering… I discovered my new favourite coffee shop in uMhlanga - African Roots Coffee, and we were treated to great massages at Hello Hunny, Nails at Nail-It and a gorgeous blowout at Grant Harper. The menu was tantalizing too! Coffee and breakfast at African Roots (imported croissants and spectacular single origin coffee!), smoothies at Power Plant, and a lunch that blew me away at the all new Village Table. The exercise at the really gorgeous Planet Fitness I could’ve done without, but honestly, if I am going to be forced to workout, that is certainly a nice place to do it!

Indaba was jam-packed with events and workshops, and the Presidential walkabout certainly boosted morale for the exhibitors, with a palpable excitement. Indaba saw a big rebrand for next year’s event too - it is now “AFRICA'S TRAVEL INDABA” - a mouthful for sure, but it signals the shift to a broader focus on the African travel market, and proudly displaying what the continent has to offer. We also saw a continued momentum on the property development front, with construction rocketing on at Oceans uMhlanga and The Pearls, and we attended the launches of several new developments planned for the Sibaya & Umhlanga Ridge precincts. Other exciting development news was the announcement of the preferred bidder for the new R200 million cruise terminal in Durban.

Granny Mouse Country House hosted myself and other media for a star-lit open-air pop-up kitchen, with gourmet meals lovingly crafted by their incredibly talented culinary artists. It was a superb evening and I enjoyed the dinner almost as much as I enjoyed my stay at this wonderful property. As what passes for winter in our gorgeous city approaches, I’m excited to enjoy the few cooler weeks to come, and perhaps revisit the Midlands for a little winter getaway these coming school holidays! I just ADORE winter in the Midlands!

MSC announced that the MSC Musica will be headed to South African shores next year, soon after the launch of their new Pomene Bay destination in Mozambique kicks off this

FIVE MORE YEARS

AFRICA'S TRAVEL INDABA 2017 UNPACKED Africa’s Travel INDABA 2017 held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC has been deemed a resounding success, with many high-quality buyers from all over the world meeting high-quality exhibitors from across the African continent and showcasing a variety of tourism products and services. This resulted in more than 20,000 confirmed meetings being held over the three show days – an increase of over 20% compared to last year. By Meredith Haywood

f all of the exciting developments at this years event, the announcement that Indaba would remain in Durban for the next 5 years, in addition to bold rebranding to "Africa’s Travel Indaba", certainly stand out.

Also Launched at Indaba: “I Do Tourism” South African Tourism’s all new marketing campaign, which will highlight how tourism, a rapidly growing sector, has the potential to change people’s lives for the better by making a direct and tangible contribution to inclusive economic growth.

It is said that the new positioning fully reflects the ownership of the trade show by the entire African travel industry and places emphasis on South Africa’s commitment to furthering tourism and economic development on the continent.

South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Tokozile Xasa, invited all South Africans to become tourism ambassadors for their own country, hailing I Do Tourism as a movement that will show the social and economic value of tourism in people’s day-to-day lives.

This year’s INDABA attracted • 7 000 delegates, including • 1 449 local and international buyers, as well as more than • 1 000 exhibiting businesses from 18 African countries showcasing a diverse array of travel and tourism offerings. • 692 registered media representatives attended the show, an 8% increase over 2016.

South African Tourism chief executive Sisa Ntshona praised this edition of Africa’s Travel INDABA as a resounding success: "This year was all about listening to the feedback from exhibitors and partners that resulted in some fundamental changes, to ensure the event stays fresh and relevant. These ranged from the show's updated diary system that provided more matchmaking and meeting opportunities to a brand-new INDABA app as the show's primary source of information about news, meetings and events.”

eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede extends a warm welcome to all those visiting Durban. Tourism KwaZulu-Natal CEO Ndabo Khoza, eThekwini Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer and Acting City Manager & Head of Durban Tourism Phillip Sithole celebrate five more years of Africa's Travel INDABA in Durban.

Funky new branding for Africa's Travel INDABA. South African President Jacob Zuma officially opens Africa's Travel INDABA 2017, flanked by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu and eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede

"Other event enhancements included the new Lap of Luxury pavilion, showcasing five-star products, and the Hidden Gems pavilion showcasing small tourism businesses," he explained. "Hidden Gems was a pioneering initiative between the private sector and public sector aimed at accelerating inclusive growth in the tourism industry. The programme identified 90 quality tourism SMEs from all nine provinces, and helped get them market-ready before their sponsored participation at Africa's Travel INDABA. It proved to be a highly successful platform for them to meet and network with fellow exhibitors as well as travel buyers, and gain valuable exposure for their enterprises," Ntshona added.

need to take place between the public and private sector to grow tourism together. Transformation in the tourism sector will also be high on the tourism agenda and we will ensure that emerging entrepreneurs are given the necessary resources and skills to develop new products and experiences for the city. We look forward to the innovation and transformation of Africa's Travel INDABA over the next five years.” Summing up the show's success, Ntshona noted: "We’re confident that the additional offerings, SME showcase and enhanced platforms for dialogue and information-sharing contributed to the success

of Africa's Travel INDABA 2017. We're not done yet though, with several more enhancements and a refreshed brand planned for 2018, and we trust that exhibitors, delegates, media and buyers will be as excited as we are for next year’s event.” Next year’s Africa's Travel INDABA will take place from 8 to 10 May 2018 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.«

SA Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa at the African Travel Indaba 2017

KwaZulu-Natal's MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, said: "We are thrilled that the province has won the bid to host INDABA for the next five years. This will give us an opportunity to further invest in the show and ensure that it continues to grow, thereby increasing its contribution to the province's GDP. "Furthermore, it will allow us the opportunity to engage tour operators to partner with us in growing intra-African travel into KwaZulu-Natal. We want to create an impactful tourism sector that will spread into our rural and township tourism economies as well.” Phillip Sithole, acting deputy city manager for eThekwini and head of Durban Tourism, stated: "It is evident that robust engagements

T

he world’s largest privately-owned cruise line and brand market leader in Europe, South America and South Africa - MSC Cruises, recently announced many new developments, including intensification of the company’s commitment to growth in Southern & South Africa.

The popular cruise company’s commitment is most evident in their latest development on the coast of Mozambique - Pomene Bay, and the bigger, better cruise ship - MSC Musica, headed to our shores in 2018. Pomene Bay is certainly a paradise for South African cruise-goers and a fantastic destination to add to the already wonderful array of choices. The destination is a remote and isolated peninsula 605km north of Maputo, regarded as one of the most picturesque hidden jewels of Mozambique. On one side, the smooth-as-glass Indian Ocean laps onto the powdery white sand of its palm-lined beaches, while the other side is framed by the clear waters of a spectacular mangrove estuary. “This is a destination that was as irresistible to us, as we know it will be for our guests,” says Ross Volk MD of MSC Cruises South Africa. “When Pomene Bay Lodge came onto the market, it was an easy call, we snapped it up. It may be challenging to reach by land, but its potential for cruise liner visitors was undeniable.” As with all its other exclusive destinations, MSC Cruises will develop its new property on the peninsula to mirror the sublime offerings that guests experience on board. The lodge’s existing restaurant, bar, and sunset pool will be upgraded and extended , while new additions will include additional bars and restaurant dining decks, plus a spa for ultimate relaxation. MSC is also developing an exciting catalogue of excursions for visitors to the peninsula. World class snorkelling surrounded by an astounding variety of marine life, exploring the jungle-like mangroves that burst with birdlife and juvenile reef fish, and ‘forever’ walks on pristine stretches of beach are just the start. No stranger to developing exclusive destinations for cruise guests along Mozambique’s shores, MSC Cruises will act with the same careful consideration for the local economy and ecology in its development of Pomene Bay as it has with Mozambique’s island playground, Portuguese Island in the Inhaca Archipelago. All construction will be done in a way to protect the environmental integrity of the peninsula, and will be completed in time for MSC Sinfonia’s first call in 2017.

WORLD-CLASS CRUISE TERMINAL Along with these exciting announcements, it was recently announced that KwaZulu Cruise Terminal, a joint venture between MSC Cruises SA and Africa Armada Consortium, is the preferred bidder for the new Durban Cruise Terminal development project worth R200-million. This new international facility is planned for A and B berths (opposite the new Lion Match building on the Point Waterfront) with the aim of positioning Durban as a world-class cruise capital. The announcement was made by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Chief Executive, Richard Vallihu, who said, “Despite the pressures of the global economic climate on disposable incomes, the global luxury cruise sector remains one of the fastest growing segments in the tourism industry and has the potential to grow the economy and create jobs. "The Durban cruise market had grown from 75 947 passengers ten years ago to 191 412 passengers last season. Already we have at least 20 international cruise liners operated by 14 cruise lines calling at South Africa’s ports. "TNPA’s position in terms of its cruise strategy was to offer new and modern cruise terminals that would provide an ideal gateway to a unique South African experience," he said. The project's completion will further cement Durban's position as "South Africa's Playground.«

NEW CRUISE SHIP And then there’s the new ship heading to our shores - the MSC Musica is set to get the 2018/2019 South African summer off to a glittering start. Able to accommodate over 2,500 guests, the Musica has more a la cart menus, more swimming pools, more entertainment facilities, more lounges than we’ve been treated to on the Sinfonia. Life aboard the MSC Musica is beautiful from the moment you step on; from the central foyer’s three-tier waterfall and its see-through piano, floating suspended on a crystal floor above a pool of shimmering water, to designer venues like the Crystal Lounge, the Havana Club cigar lounge, the Sanremo Casino and the Kaito Sushi Bar. And as with any MSC experience, it’s a magical world for adults, kids, and teens alike.

T

he tower will be an iconic and futuristic building, 88 floors tall and costing around R 7.3 billion. The city unveiled these plans as well as plans to extend the already world-class beachfront promenade at the recently held Africa's Travel Indaba 2017.

The tower development will include, among other things, a retail element, office space, apartments, museum and luxury hotels. The tower will also house a Michelin star restaurant and a viewing deck for the public. Construction is set to start in 2019 and be completed within four years, opening the doors by December 2022. The Durban Tower Development Company says; “The iconic and futuristic form of the building embodies the progressive attitude of the City of Durban, demonstrating confidence and a hope for the future.” The news of the proposal of the structure, which is to be on Durban Country Club grounds certainly garnered many polarized responses when it was announced at the beginning of 2016, and the building itself is bound to be controversial for many Durban residents. However the location and design are certainly favourable, and the surrounding infrastructure is bound to make this a very desirable development indeed. The project is still in the conceptual stage, with negotiations underway between the city, developers and all affected stakeholders.«

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN The internationally renowned Oyster Box Hotel is always pushing the boundaries in regards to offering world class experiences for their guests. So when they asked me to collaborate on a Spirit Adventure that showcased some of the world’s best loved blended and single malt whiskies, I was more than honoured to assist. By Reggie Mthembu

E

verybody does wine and food but the Oyster Box Hotel seeks to also provide their guests with never before seen events of an entirely different and exciting kind. ‘Spirit Adventures’ is a concept developed by the Oyster Box that brings together great spirits, amazing food, superb service and of course adventurous people! Wednesday 10th May was the date set for the latest incarnation of Durban’s finest Spirit Adventure. Guests were welcomed with canapés and a delicious whisky cocktail on the Ocean Terrace, with its backdrop of the Indian Ocean and a sprinkling of lights from ships heading toward port. The cocktail being an introduction to the night to follow: Johnnie Walker Double Black lovingly stirred with Martini Rosso and a homemade cherry syrup with a dash of bitters. The Grill Room was the setting for the main event: four decadent courses expertly paired with Johnnie Walker Super Deluxe blended whiskies as well as a crafted single malt. The Johnnie Walker blends are all comprised of single malt and grain whiskies which are blended together – each blend has single malt whiskies that contribute to the core flavour profile of the blend and these single malts also stand proudly by themselves. To this end, guests got to sample the Johnnie Walker variant that matched each course and the single malt that sits at the core of that particular blend. We were off to a galloping start with Johnnie Walker Green Label 15YO and Talisker 10YO that were paired with an explosive combination of smoked haddock ravioli and oyster cream. The maritime flavours present in both whiskies were perfectly complemented by the smoky, salty, creamy starter. It was at this point that a guest asked the question that begs an immediate response for whisky lovers: how can the Talisker, which is a 10YO, be used in the Green Label blend, which is a 15YO ? Quite simply, Talisker is bottled as a 10YO for the South African market but is available in various ages – one that is aged 15 years or more will be used in the Green Label.

So, with the serious questions out of the way, we dove straight into a Scottish inspired main course of chicken roulade with a haggis farce and whisky jus. Luckily for us, it was simply a take on haggis and not the actual innards of a sheep! An intense dish, paired with Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve and Clynelish 14YO. The creamy, almost waxy texture of these whiskies stand up to rich flavours of this dish and their almost honey-like palate danced with the orange whisky jus. After a little Q&A on the whiskies being sampled for the night, the sweet lovers set their sights on a classic pear and apple tarte tatin that was presented with delectable accompaniments as only the Oyster Box could conjure up – coconut coated Mars bar, chocolate crumb, meringue crown and crème anglaise. One would think that no whisky could match to that, but the awesome power and spice of the Johnnie Walker Platinum Label 18YO did exactly that. The single malt for this course was the Cardhu 12YO – a distillery that is known as the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker as it was the first distillery purchased by the family in 1893. The reason it was the first purchase is simple: flavour! Cardhu’s wide and broad palate titillates the taste buds like no other and was a fitting end to the evening - almost! For the pièce de résistance, we had to finish with the rarest of the blends: Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Along with petite fours, guests were presented with the Johnnie Walker Blue Label signature serve: a carved wooden and brass board was placed in front of each guest laden with two heavy based crystal whisky tumblers. One filled with ice and water and the other with a generous measure of the whisky itself. The concept: drink the water first so that it cleanses, chills and dilutes your palate –follow with a sip of the whisky, hold it on your palate……………..…. and wait. Wait till the multitude of layers of rich flavour slowly build up as your palate warms, so you can truly appreciate the power and might of this testament to blending excellence. A Spirit Adventure never to be forgotten and one which I cannot wait to repeat. Cheers. «

GRANNY MOUSE

POP-UP KITCHEN

Granny Mouse Country House is always a delightful destination - offering year-round splendor and a kind of country-chic rarely found. Their food is also often acclaimed, but this little country gem had more up their sleeve! By Meredith Haywood

I

t’s not often that one travels more than an hour for a dinner - but I did, and definitely will again! I was recently invited to join the Granny Mouse Family for an exciting event - a first for the Midlands; A pop-up kitchen, under the stars, with meals prepared by culinary artists Wayland Green & Kirstie Du Toit on an open fire of all things! Home for the night was a cozy, well appointed room at Granny Mouse, with “that view” and “that vibe” that make you realize as soon as you’ve arrived; you’re not staying long enough. Now I have in the past waxed lyrical about the accommodations at Granny Mouse, but really - if I’m honest, their greatest wealth lies in their warm and welcoming staff. This bunch sure know how to throw a party! After we’d had our pre-dinner drinks we were all led out to the courtyard in front of the chapel, where the whole place had been transformed into an outdoor kitchen and spectacular dining room. Glistening glasses and twinkling lights made the little girl in me go “squeeee!” It really was like something out of a fairytale. The courses came in quick succession, each dish delighting with ingenuity and bursting with the traditional South African “Braai” flavours so familiar to me - yet intriguingly reinvented and sophisticated. I can’t imagine a pop-up kitchen is easy to work in, but the team served plate after plate of beautifully executed dishes.

The menu featured Steamed Mielie Bread “Braai Broodjies”, Prawn & Hake sausage, A beautifully prepared fillet with Ox Liver & Stour Jus and for afters we were treated to a gorgeous looking deconstructed trifle… Dinner under the stars in the midlands - with the chill air on my face… it was amazing! The Culinary artists at Granny Mouse really do some amazing work, and I’d recommend a trip up to the country house to anyone! I mini-break is just what you need!«

MUSEUMS

Brush up on some fascinating history, and learn about our heritage

NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUM Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2256 The City Hall was built in the early 1900s due to the rapid growth of Durban, which had resulted in the original town hall taking on a new mantle as the Durban post office. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum, which displays a selection of fossils – including that of a dodo – animals, birds, reptiles and insects.
