EDITOR'S LETTER 2016 was certainly a year like no other for Durban, for a lot of us I suppose you could liken it to your school career. You needed it, you had some good times, you learned a lot, but boy are you glad when it’s over!

already, we can’t wait to watch it grow up into the sky. The Durban July and all the beautiful and grand pre-shows and after-parties rocked this city yet again, with local talented designers just taking my breath away. On the food front, there was the annual Bunny Chow Competition and the city hosted a world first - the first ever Shisa Nyama competition, which has opened my eyes about Durban food for sure. It’s so easy to forget just how culturally diverse Durban is it is a true African city, full of flavour and spice.

This past year has seen a great change in Durban, and it’s been an incredible experience allround. We had the Logos Hope floating library docked in Durban as part of their very first South African tour, the biggest floating library in the world!

And true to form we showed the world our vibrant city with Essence Festival Durban, bringing stars from around the globe to our shores and showcasing Durban to a global audience.

The Durban ICC hosted many amazing international conferences including the World AIDS Conference and INDABA 2016 was amazing. I just love the wonder on the faces of our visitors, especially first timers. Seeing people enjoy your city is such a privilege.

It’s been a blast, and I look forward to next year being even better - 2017 has all the makings of a stellar year. Now it’s just up to us to showcase the very best that this wonderful city has to offer. I wish everyone the very best for the festive season, and a very happy new year too!

Among the many new projects, two HUGE developments were launched - Oceans Umhlanga and The Pearls Mall. And The Pearls is already open and boasting some top names in retail as well as new restaurants that range from super-luxurious fine-dining to comfort food. Oceans Umhlanga will be opening a Radisson Blu Hotel as part of their development, and it looks like it’s going to be spectacular - having won various design awards

DURBAN FAVOURITES FEATURE IN

MONOPOLY MZANSI EDITION

Monopoly Mzansi, South Africa’s very own Monopoly board game - with 22 proudly South African locations and Durban highlights, including the iconic Oyster Box Hotel, Durban’s Beachfront ("The Golden Mile"), Florida Road & Ushaka Marine World - has launched in the local market. By Meredith Haywood

H

aving celebrated its 81st brand birthday, Monopoly has been enjoyed by over a billion people worldwide and now South Africans will have the opportunity to ‘’own’’ their piece of this beautiful country. Earlier this year, South Africans were

8

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

encouraged to vote to get their favourite South African location, street attraction or destination on the board to become part of Monopoly history. Over the past few years numerous regional country versions of Monopoly have been produced and to date the game is licensed in 103

countries, with Monopoly Mzansi being the latest addition. The special localised Mzansi edition features 22 landmarks and four transport stations, with the newest addition being the Gautrain Train station in Sandton. V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain scooped the most expensive 5«Durban

spots followed by Boulders Beach, Chapman’s Peak Drive and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Other locations highlight South Africa’s natural heritage with the Big Hole and Addo Elephant Park making it on the board. Additional beautiful natural landmarks highlighted on the Monopoly Mzansi board include The Cradle of Humankind and St. Francis Bay with Durban Beachfront ("The Golden Mile"), Florida Road and uShaka Marine World vying for the most affordable locations on the board. “South Africans are known for their ‘gees’ and pride in their country. Which is why we are extremely excited to present the final locations that made it on board as they truly represent South Africa’s rich cultural diversity and natural beauty. Some locations are old favourites, The Kruger Park, Gold Reef City and the Union Buildings, with the addition of a few new trendy spots such as Nelson Mandela Square, Maboneng, 4th Avenue Parkhurst and The Oyster Box Hotel. There is also a strong link to Madiba’s legacy with the inclusion 5«Durban

of Vilakazi Street and Robben Island,” says Siphiwe Thabethe, country marketing manager for Hasbro South Africa. ‘’Monopoly Mzansi is a fantastic tourism product and an ideal keepsake as it’s proudly showcasing the essence of South Africa and a fair representation of all that South Africa has to offer

to visitors across regions.’’ Monopoly Mzansi, which will be available in all leading toy stores nationwide, makes the perfect gift for the festive season and provides an opportunity for family and friends to come together and enjoy some quality time together in Mzansi style. «

A DAY WITH

MR DURBAN TOURISM We caught up with the Head of Durban Tourism, Mr Phillip Sithole, to talk about his love for the city and its bright future.

You’re the man in the know, so what’s your favourite holiday activity in Durban? During the Summer Holidays, my best place to be is spending time at the local Township Restaurants. I love the Shisanyama Experience in Durban and to be entertained at the same time by our highly talented local DJ’s is such a treat. I love seeing the integration of our visitors mixing with our locals and enjoying

10

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

the unique dance moves and cuisine together. The summer atmosphere and vibe is amazing in the Townships of Umlazi, Clermont and KwaMashu and is definitely one of the best times to see the city come alive with its unique multicultural lifestyle and unique east coast flavours. Durban has so many great things going on during the festive season - what are you most looking forward to ? Durban definitely has a wide selection of events that are planned throughout the city and the beauty of them, is that they are also dispersed to various parts of the city. From Beach Festivals to Music Festivals, it caters for everyone’s preferences. Durban’s biggest annual New Year’s Eve Party, Fact Durban Rocks, that takes place at Moses Mabhida Stadium is one Event showcasing Durban’s finest artists that I most look forward to, to usher in the New Year.

5«Durban

The Golden Mile is growing more impressive every year. With the promenade linking almost our entire beachfront, dotted with interesting restaurants and attractions along the way, what is your favourite beachfront stop, and why? The Golden Mile in Durban is definitely one of our flagship, world class attractions and the city is proud that the investment is offering a very viable retail and tourist experience. I often Jog from Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World to uShaka Marine World and it's one of the most breath-taking experiences I so enjoy. One of my favourite spots on the promenade is the uShaka Moyo Pier, it offers one of the best views of the Golden Mile and I enjoy the tranquillity and sound of the waves crashing against the pier. Not forgetting the awesome African inspired meals and thirst quenching cocktails against the backdrop of our beautiful city.

What future developments can we expect to see in the coming years? The City Looks forward to the Development of the New Cruise Terminal and Point Waterfront Development. This development will increase Cruise Tourism tremendously for the City. We look forward to more international airlines having direct flights to Durban. Durban will also see more hotel developments and we will be getting a new Open Bus Experience for Durban.

What is your favourite Durban dish? A uniquely Durban Bunny Chow. I enjoy a good flavoursome Durban Curry and I love the fact that our City invented the now world famous Bunny Chow experience. When it comes to dining, where would we find you on a Durban Summer afternoon - what’s your favourite hangout? I love spending time in the largest shopping mall in the Southern Hemisphere, The Gateway Theatre of Shopping. I found a hidden gem across from the Gateway fountain, Barrios. I frequent this restaurant as I thoroughly enjoy the baby chicken, whole grilled fish and a good South African steak! The flavours and atmosphere remind me of the freshness of Durban’s coastal experience. There has been so much growth in the eThekwini area - Umhlanga in particular has burgeoned - what are you most hopeful about when it comes to these developments? The City that continuously develops and is perceived to be a lucrative investment opportunity, is a sign that the City has vast growth potential and is in high demand. Investment helps boost Tourism, with the new development at The Oceans in Umhlanga, 2 important tourism products, a luxury shopping experince and a 5 star Radisson Blu Hotel will flourish from this development which will further enhance our tourism offering. Every investment is interlinked with Tourism Growth, so we will always encourage new investment to the city. What do you see as Durban’s key attractions? Our unique selling points are our rich culture and heritage, together with our natural beauty and warm people. I would say no visit to Durban is complete without a visit to one of our key Tourism Routes, my personal favourite being the Woza eNanda Heritage Route. The Valley of a Thousand Hills, Sapphire Coast and The Township Tourism Nodes are most popular and draw thousands of holiday makers to enjoy vast tourism experiences, be it adventure or culture.

For tourism entrepreneurs out there, do you have any words of wisdom or advice? I have a strong passion in developing Township Tourism and creating platforms for emerging tourism businesses to grow and flourish in new environments. My advice is that if you have a business idea, event or business that will enhance and grow Tourism, follow your passion and ensure that you undertake the proper research to start up your business. You have to always ensure you remain to be competitive and stay abreast of all new technology and trends so that you Business can always remain relevant and on par with global trends.

Thank you Phillip for the wise words of advice and insight into Durban's exciting future! «

IN SEARCH OF KZN'S

BEST COFFEE

On Tuesday, 25th of October 2016, KwaZulu-Natal’s top coffee café owners and baristas gathered at the 2016 Illovo Café Society Awards at the Bellevue Café in Kloof. The event has been proudly sponsored by Illovo Sugar SA for the past 16 years, and the awards are a collaboration between Illovo and the Sunday Tribune, who started the Café Society in 1999.

T

he Café Society Awards have grown in stature and acclaim, and the Café Society's stamp of approval has helped grow many independent coffee shops throughout KwaZulu-Natal. It has also seen the likes of former winners go on to represent South Africa on a number of international coffee stages.

The winners of the categories that were announced for the evening included Tea @ Baytree in South Coast Mall, Shelly Beach; Terbodore Coffee Roasters in the Midlands, Counter Culture in Ballito and Lineage Coffee in Hilcrest, Durban.«

Last year, an additional category was added to the awards that separated the North Coast and Central Durban category into two, and this year another welcome change has been implemented as far as the make up of the judging panel. This year’s panel now includes some of KZN’s very own stars with a taste for excellence, such as Darren Maule, Logie Naidoo, Vanessa Marawa and Sorisha Naidoo, who are among the 28 strong coffee critics judging the competition. Each and every judge undergoes a training workshop with top baristas before judging commences to ensure they understand precisely and all use the same criteria needed to judge a great cup of coffee.

The full results for the 2016 Café Society Awards are as follows:

The awards evening was abuzz with excitement as the ever-hopeful finalists waited with baited breath to hear if they would claim top spot in one of the four awarded area categories (South Coast, Pietermaritzburg and Midlands, Central Durban and North Coast). Marketing Manager for Illovo Sugar SA, Darrell de Wet was delighted with the turnout and results of the awards. “It has been such a privilege to be part of the growth of the KZN coffee industry through our ongoing support of these awards. It has become an important platform for these participants from all over KZN to showcase their talents and passion for coffee. These individuals have worked extremely hard to win the recognition that comes with this award and should be really proud of their efforts. Illovo Sugar SA is passionate about supporting the communities we operate in, which is why we are a proud sponsor of the Café Society Awards in KZN,” said de Wet.

WILD AND FREE Get to know your local vegetation and start foraging - part of your next meal could be free! By Graham Neilson

W

hen next you are braaing a steak at home and thinking of what to eat with it, how about some freshly picked chickweed & a mash of buckhorn plantain instead of spinach & mushroom? Looking for something peppery like rocket or watercress? Then peppercress & pennywort will serve you nicely. These are just some of the wild, natural & totally free flavours available to you in any park or tract of open land, if you know what to look for. Enter Chef Charlie Lakin. An intimate knowledge of wild flavour coupled with a passion for discovering new things and how to manipulate them into wonderful restaurant dishes, means that a walk around Jameson Park could mean foraging your dinner. Perhaps getting an elderflower cordial started that will become ‘champagne’ in six months. Or wood sorrel turned into a fresh, zingy citrus sherbet. Or any number of pickled and preserved plants that can be stored for a rainy day. Charlie grew up in the wilds of Yorkshire and learning about the land and what it offered was a way of life for him and his family. Little did he know that 30 years later his way of life would be at the cutting edge of modern cuisine. Crunchy vygies picked from the seashore or pungent purple wild garlic flowers (which grow everywhere in Durban!) regularly find their way on to his menus. He vociferously encourages people to get to know their local vegetation and get involved with foraging. So if you happen to see a burly, bearded man with a beanie & a Black Sabbath t-shirt crashing through the bushes or halfway up a tree at any point on the highway between Durban and ‘Toti he will only be too happy to teach you about something wonderful. «

SMOKIN' JOE'S KNOCKOUT BURGERS:

SMOKING HOT! By Ingrid Shevlin

I

'm skeptical of national restaurant awards as it’s often difficult to differentiate between an independently judged competition and a popularity vote. Like Eat Out Awards' Top Everyday Eateries. To my surprise, because this wasn’t initially clear, the competition is based entirely on reviews and ratings by customers. The danger here is that the outcome can be skewed towards those eateries able to drum up the most support - not the best idea. So, it was with some skepticism that the daughter and I visited Smokin' Joe's at 215 Musgrave road, which recently won Eat Out's Best Burger Eatery in KZN. As it turned out, I was completely bowled over by this edgy little eatery and by owner Yusuf Bossa’s enthusiasm for burgers. What a great surprise. A Christina Martin trained chef, Yusuf spent some years practicing his culinary craft – and other skills – in Dubai, UK and USA before returning home. He opened Smokin’ Joe’s Knock Out Burgers seven months ago. The décor is great, managing to be both slick and casual. There’s a wall of pictures of legendary boxers Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier (aka Smoking' Joe) who inspired the burgers. Yusuf did explain the connection between burgers and boxing. It’s complicated. Ask him when you go – and you should.

There is a limited selection of burgers, supplemented by specials. Main menu includes “Royale with Cheese”, 120g beef patty with cheese, tomatoes, caramelized onions, and their secret sauce. The "Rocky Marciano" offers a 180g patty with a tomato, wild mushroom and thyme ragu, sriracha (chilli) sauce and pickled jalapenos. There’s also a “Raging Bull” burger and “The Greatest” with a 160g pure Wagu patty (specialized beef). I opted for a “Thrilla in Manilla” chicken burger, R70. This is chicken breast cut into strips topped with a peanut satay, roasted pepper, cashew and cheese sauce, served with a side of chips. Burger filling was absolutely delicious and chicken super tender. Loved the crunchy cashews for its added texture and the amazing chips. So thin and crispy. The daughter ordered the "Nacho Libra" burger with sriracha cheese sauce, nachos, roasted tomatoes, peri-peri spiced chicken breast and their secret sauce, R50, with chips. She raved over it. Again the nachos offered a lovely, crunchy texture. A few days earlier the son-in-law tried their "Smokin’ Joe" signature burger, a 120g patty with a jalapeno and cream cheese sauce, slices of cheese, roasted tomatoes, caramelised onions, and their secret sauce. He loved it. All burgers are made in-house. They also serve reasonable coffee with beans supplied by Lineage. This eatery is Halaal. Closes Mondays.« SMOKIN' JOE'S KNOCKOUT BURGERS 215 Musgrave Road, Berea 031 201 2343

INNOVATIVE HEALTHY EATING with

A vibey café situated in Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Ebb & Flo is THE place to go for healthy, low carb lunches and dinner...

T

heir kitchens are run on old fashioned principles, where the beginning of the week starts with roasting bones and reducing stocks. Key to production is a simple philosophy: Keep it fresh, keep it simple and treat your ingredients with respect.

The shop opens early in true deli style, preparing patisserie fresh every morning from old school recipies. Pasta at Ebb & Flo is another strong focus, with fresh pasta being made and served daily. The key to successfully making the perfect pasta time after time is training, and Ebb & Flo takes particular interest in training young girls and guys just starting out in the industry, who are considering the restaurant business as a career option. With healthy eating being such a huge trend, and many low-carb and fit-friendly patrons enjoying lunch at the café, the health focus has grown over the last year. Brendan Newport, highly esteemed executive chef at Ebb & Flo, has carefully planned and put together an extended healthy meal offering, expanding their newly launched summer menu. Ebb & Flo supports healthy eating, and in doing so they also support micro-farming and fresh, local produce. This means that you’re getting only the best, as it should be. The café has also expanded into gluten-free products, such as pastas, pizzas and wraps, catering for those who cannot have wheat. As a new focus for the coming year, Ebb & Flo has teamed up with nutritionist Angie Clausen to bring catered, delivered lunches to corporates in the area, a pilot project started late in 2015. Ebb & Flo and Angie have secured the position of wellness ambassador to Aspen Pharmaceuticals, with daily lunches delivered to their board of executives. Ebb & Flo are committed to bringing fresh, healthy, organic, free-range, Banting-friendly, restaurant-quality prepared meals, packaged and even labelled straight to you every day! It's a great way to stay healthy - even when you’re stuck at your desk or in the office. You can order in the morning and collect (or have it delivered) at lunch time, paired with your favourite coffee or freshly pressed organic fruit juice. What more could one ask for? Well they’ll soon be delivering daily with Über-Eats, so you’ll always get your fix! Fear not though, Ebb & Flo's famous award-winning milkshakes and burgers - and those delicious sweet potato fries which have amassed a cultlike following in Durban - are not going anywhere, and can still be enjoyed whenenver the craving strikes! « For more info or to order: EBB & FLO CAFÉ Shop G158 Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Umhlanga Ph: 031 566 3084

MUSEUMS

Brush up on some fascinating history, and learn about our heritage

NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUM Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2256 The City Hall was built in the early 1900s due to the rapid growth of Durban, which had resulted in the original town hall taking on a new mantle as the Durban post office. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum, which displays a selection of fossils – including that of a dodo – animals, birds, reptiles and insects. Durban City Hall, Anton Lembede St, Durban OLD FORT AND WARRIOR’S GATE Tel: +27 (0)31 307 3337 Set in beautiful gardens is the Old Fort where the British population of Durban took refuge in 1824 during the month-long siege of the town by the voortrekkers.
