and much more. There really is something for everyone - so there’s no excuse to leave wifey at home! One simply must mosey around a luxury yacht at least once in one’s life - there is no better display of luxury and affluence than one of the many spectacularly presented luxury yachts at the Durban Boat & Lifestyle Show.

“This year we are excited to have the latest from Riviera, Maverick, Mariner/Tui, Jeanneau, Cap Camarat and Knysna Yacht Co on the Show” says Durban Boat & Lifestyle Show organiser, Barry Meehan. “Some of the boats are imported, with the others built locally, mainly down in the Cape.”

If fishing, 4x4, camping, caravans and “outdoorsy stuff ” is more your game - you’re in luck as there is bound to be endless gear, information and dazzling displays. And lets not forget the amazingly unique outdoor furniture made from scrapped Arab dhows from Tanzania by Tanzania House.

There will also be a regatta on Saturday & Sunday- show attendees can win a place with the crew on the all new RNYC Pacer Yachts and sail along in the Simply Sailing Regatta. The show also features exhibitors showcasing the latest fishing, navigational, electronic equipment

Destinations also feature prominently this year, from fishing expeditions in Mozambique and Tanzania, to safaris in Botswana and around Southern Africa. And when you’re done exploring, there’ll be

eats galore from fine establishments serving mouthwatering food and splendid refreshments. Add to this the fun activities for the kids (like free boat rides!), and a great play area to keep ‘em busy while you explore and there’s a recipe for a great day out with the whole family! Parking space will be available next to Hakuna Matata Charters, just past the Royal Natal Yacht Club (at the end of the island). “Parking will be at a cost of R5 per vehicle and is a donation that will go towards the National Sea Rescue Institute – a 100% voluntary charity that saves lives on South African waters,” says Barry. Tickets are R70 for adults and R40 for kids over 12 and senior citizens. Kids under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available at both entrances of the show. Gates are open from 09h30 until 17:00 on Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th, and from 09h30 to 16:00 on Sunday the 26th June. 

THE DURBAN PROPETY MARKET Julie Solomon gives us some inside info and tells us where she thinks the property market in Durban is going. Are we moving into more of a sellers’ market?

T

o me, there is no better feeling than finding the ‘right’ home for a family, seeing their happy and excited smiles when they take ownership.

I specialise in residential sales in the Berea, Musgrave, Essenwood and Morningside and Glenwood areas. These suburbs offer so much to buyers. It’s a vibrant exciting area within close proximity to everything. There is a substantial amount of activity, upgrading and development happening in these areas as demand for well looked after, correctly priced, secure properties escalates. I believe these areas will continue to be sought after for many, many years to come and will always offer a range of affordable options for both first time buyers as well as more established buyers and investors. Many buyers, sellers and property agents have been surprised by how quickly some homes have sold, often within a week or even within just a few hours of going on the market and at prices that have even surprised me. There are certain segments of the market that are overwhelmingly popular and stock is in short supply. The sub -R1,700 000 range with specific amenities are in high demand. So high in fact that, if I had thirty of these listings in a month I could probably have sold them all! Does this mean we are moving into more of a sellers’ market? When it comes to certain price ranges yes, I do believe we are - whilst in fact, in other price categories, the opposite is true. The use of the concept of ‘pop-up’ show houses is working extremely well and proving to be highly successful. The sectional title market has been buoyant and I believe this trend will continue well into 2017 with buyer urgency gaining momentum. We are experiencing all time high selling prices in certain categories. We have seen several developers coming back into the market as the demand for sectional title homes with added security features is fast growing in popularity. The demand for development land is brisk. It is therefore important that when you appoint an agent to sell your home you look at how active that agent is in a similar price range as this will determine how well they know and understand the market. Under-pricing through lack of expertise leaves a seller with a bitter taste in their mouth. (I’ll focus more on “How to price your home correctly” in future articles). As our economy tightens and we hold on for our political climate to smooth out, sellers need to do as much as possible to ensure the home they are selling is in excellent condition and offers good value for money. Buyers are wanting a home they can move into without spending on renovations and upgrades. With the beautiful winter weather and climate we enjoy, what better place to live than in the seaside town of Durban?! 

AEROTROPOLIS: KZN King Shaka International Airport & Dube TradePort are part of a grand plan for an emerging airport city and major business hub on the cusp of becoming South Africa’s new gateway to the world. By Meredith Haywood

A

60-year master plan, Aerotropolis: this emergent airport city is poised to become the business gateway to South Africa, Southern Africa and the world. An environment specifically designed to accelerate business efficiencies and enhance the global supply chain, Aerotropolis is a bold move to bolster trade and business in KZN. At the heart of Aerotropolis are Dube TradePort and King Shaka International Airport. King Shaka International Airport has seen spectacular growth in the recent past - with four new international airlines flying from KSIA. It’s not hard to understand the vision behind Aerotropolis - to become a major trade and business hub in Sub-Saharan Africa, on the doorstep of KwaZulu-Natal’s biggest city and primary manufacturing centre, Durban. The development brings to the fore a highly-competitive business operating environment, complete with state-of-the-art connected infrastructure; road, rail, seaport and I.T. – all designed to accelerate business efficiencies and enhance the global supply chain. Three components clearly set Aerotropolis:KZN apart, affording it a distinct competitive advantage over other South African and African destinations: • Firstly, this is a freight-orientated development with world class cargo facilities, managed by a single handler and considered the most secure in Africa; • Secondly, it is being purpose-built, especially within a radius of 7,5km around Dube TradePort; and • Thirdly, this is one of few such developments around the world utilising a Greenfield site, with an additional 32 000 acres, ready for carefully planned and controlled development. Strategically located between the seaports of Durban – Africa’s busiest port and boasting the southern hemisphere’s biggest and best-equipped container terminal – and Richards Bay – South Africa’s largest deep-water port and the primary facility for handling bulk commodities, as well as granite blocks, liquids and steel. Aerotropolis will be the ideal platform, centred, as it is, around international air connectivity, for the expansion of global business and trade opportunities and economic growth. Significant Government investment in continued port and regional development will further streamline business efficiencies, while planning activities for Durban’s new and visionary dig-out port project will also broaden Aerotropolis’s competitive advantage. The coastal location makes logistics a cost effective proposition. In addition, South Africa’s membership of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) trade forum provides a catalytic opportunity to re-position Durban and KwaZulu-Natal. Aerotropolis development, burgeoning port infrastructure, direct access to more than 120 global destinations and linkages with Southern African countries combine to position the region as a key business entry point into South and Southern Africa. The project’s growth into the future brings together a range of diverse development stakeholders whose independent objectives align with a shared goal. These role-players are intent on generating an ideal investment climate for the expansion and growth of KwaZulu-Natal’s regional economy by creating opportunities for the broad business environment through the structured and planned development of Aerotropolis:KZN. 5Durban

OCEANS HOTEL TURNS

BLU Iconic. Stylish. Sophisticated. Oceans Umhlanga’s Radisson Blu will join the family of five Radisson Blu Hotels in South Africa - the first in KwaZulu-Natal. By Meredith Haywood

A

t a glitzy, celebrity-filled media event on the 2nd June, which included a long list of dignitaries and the who’s-who of Durban society, Vivian Reddy announced that the Oceans Umhlanga Hotel would be a Radisson Blu undertaking. This exciting development means the construction of this R700 million international hotel catapults the Oceans Umhlanga Development into an awe-inspiring R3,8 billion regional catalytic project. Great news on the back of a recent report which stated that hotel growth in sub-Saharan Africa is up a staggering 42.1% this year on the 2015 figures. This comes as a result of a survey by the W Hospitality Group, published ahead of the African Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF). Matthew Weihs, managing director of Bench Events and organiser of the AHIF, said: “Africa is still on the up. For business, trade and capital investment, the continent remains an attractive proposition, leading to continuing demand for accommodation and other hospitality services.” Oceans Umhlanga, the most recent in a long line of impressive developments in the northern node of Durban, will certainly be raising the bar when it comes to luxury accommodation with their 206 key hotel. Featuring not only the best in luxury, but also a trusted name in the luxury hospitality industry with the Radisson Blu deal. Oceans Umhlanga Development Company Chairman, Vivian Reddy said that the hotel would be the ultimate and defining dimension in what he referred to as a “Triangle of Opulence” created with neighboring five-star properties, Beverly Hills and The Oysters.

HOTEL AMENITIES The Oceans Umhlanga Radisson Blu will feature, among other amenities; • 135 standard rooms - of which 72 will be inter-leading, 54 family rooms, 16 suites and an opulently appointed presidential suite. • The hotel will also boast a magnificent pool deck • A stunning roof-top bar & terrace • Café & roastery style coffee bar & lounge with outdoor seating • Grillhouse & all day dining restaurant • Boutique gym • Spa with 4 treatment rooms (which will no doubt be every bit as luxurious as the hotel) • Multi purpose conference centre with state-of-the-art business facilities • And of course, a palatial ballroom (yes! a BALLROOM!) for banquets and gala dinners. (up to 700 pax) ooh-la-la! Oceans Umhlanga is already a hugely celebrated development, the esteemed Vivian Reddy changing the landscape of the already opulent Umhlanga Village into something of a different animal altogether. This bold move by Radisson Blu and the Oceans team sets the tone for a superluxe ambience and we can’t wait to see this striking vision reach up into the Umhlanga skyline. 

“The sleek, glazed facade will offer some of the finest views in Durban, and we have taken pains to ensure that every hotel room has access to that view. The public areas of the hotel have been designed to create a new social hub for the town. High ceilings and glazed facades throughout will enhance the luxury of the hotel, as will the signature pool terrace, hotel spa, and one of the largest banquetting halls in the city,” he said. Radisson Blu is operated by the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group (founded in 1960) who operate over 300 up-scale hotels throughout the world. An established luxury accommodation brand, Radisson Blu currently run over 80 000 rooms around the globe - so it’s pretty impressive that Oceans Umhlanga will be the first site in KwaZulu-Natal to feature this premium hotel brand. Carlson Rezidor Senior Vice President Development for Africa, Andrew Mclachlan said the Oceans partnership fitted well into their overall positioning. “Radisson Blu is Europe’s largest upper upscale brand and Africa’s fastest growing hotel brand, leading the way, ahead of 86 other hotel brands. It is an iconic, stylish and sophisticated hotel brand with leading-edge style. Oceans Umhlanga is a world class high-end luxury mixed used development, positioned around style and elegance, we couldn’t have chosen a better development to partner with – this is a great brand fit. We are extremely excited to be attached to one of the most spectacular developments on the African continent.” said Mclachlan, adding that the new Radisson Blu in Durban was also the “missing puzzle piece” in Carlson Rezidor’s South African hotel offering.

INDABA 2016 The tourism world descended on Durban once again for Africa’s Top Travel Show By Meredith Haywood

A

n annual event, Indaba 2016 - the 37th edition, was held May 7-9 at the Albert Luthuli Convention Center (Durban ICC). Indaba is the largest travel trade show in Africa and the third largest in the world, after ITB in Berlin and World Travel Market in London. What makes Indaba unique is that, while both of the top two shows feature exhibitors from all over the world, Indaba focuses only on Africa. New travel shows have of course burgeoned over the years - We Are Africa (Cape Town May 2-5), World Travel Market Africa (Cape Town April 19-21) and International Luxury Travel Market Africa (Cape Town April 21-23). These new shows are popular, and are no doubt competition for Indaba. But Indaba stands strong and instead of resisting the incursion of the new shows onto its turf, South African Tourism responded by repositioning Indaba as a show for all of Africa. Indaba is a massive presentation of the colourful, vibrant and lively African travel industry.

Indaba becoming a pan-African trade show has been remarkably successful. Indaba 2016 had a good list of attendees from across Africa - exhibitors from 18 countries were represented and tourism ministers from nine African countries were present. This year saw a total of 7292 Delegates visiting Indaba, with the overall numbers of hosted buyers and exhibitors up from 2015 - with 14,000 meetings were held over the three days! Many of the exhibitors’ stands were breathtaking, and really encapsulated their subject well. With every exhibit capturing the vibrance of African culture. Durban has long been the successful host of the annual Tourism Indaba and the lure of Indaba for delegates is obvious - where else can you experience all of these offerings and be treated to fantastic weather and the warm, balmy air of the Indian Ocean but in Durban? Derek Hanekom, South Africa’s tourism minister, told the

audience in his opening address, “South Africa’s tourism story is one of inclusiveness. We as a continent are linked together by the ability to tell our story, and so realise our dreams for a prosperous future. Tourism can re-shape lives, bring new hope and make dreams come true – not only for individuals and communities, but for millions of people on the continent.” A first at this year’s Indaba, the Hidden Gems Zone, was built to showcase products and services from South African Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs). During Indaba the businesses enjoyed networking opportunities with buyers from around the world, attended workshops facilitated to provide knowledge and tools on how to access the market and shared their stories with global media. South Africa, and Africa, rely heavily on tourism to grow and sustain the economy. So much so that Nelson Mandela made tourism a high priority for the government early on because of the industry’s unique capacity for building up developing countries from the grassroots level. Tourism in Africa is now experiencing extreme growth, receiving over 50 million visitors a year. According to the World Economic Forum, under current trends that number will shoot up to 130 million by 2030. That’s a little over 10 years away! South African Tourism has since announced that in 2017, Indaba will once again be hosted by Durban and the province of KwaZulu-Natal from 6-8 May 2017. We look forward to another greatly successful event.

Meet the New Chef at Harvey’s: Steven Kruger Harvey’s Restaurant in Umhlanga has recently undergone some changes. Not only has ownership changed, but so too has their menu - thanks to the new co-owner and man in the kitchen, Chef Steven Kruger. The driving force behind the well-known Beluga Restaurant’s interesting fusion food, Chef Steven applies his talent and vision to an all-new menu at Harvey’s. After travelling extensively, Chef Steven has come to value the produce available in South Africa, and he certainly puts it to good use in the kitchen - creating inspired dishes like “Frushi” (Fruit Sushi) and “Handgrenading” Sushi (an interesting tempura-battered version of the classics) to fresh, made-in-house components for every dish. Chef Steven has proven himself in the Beluga Kitchen, and now bravely faces refreshing the Harvey’s menu. Chef Steven says; “I have been working on the menu for two weeks now making sure each and every dish is unique in its own right. Creating recipes and playing with different presentations.” He also says that the Harvey’s team is just as excited as he is about the new “French-Asian fusion menu with predominantly French techniques, finished off with modern, clean presentation.” If Chef Steven’s past is anything to go by, I’m sure we will see Harvey’s go from strength to strength. “We thrive on improvement and are constantly learning, updating and training every day of the week. It’s so great to be surrounded by such knowledge-hungry individuals that want to impress not only the guests but their co-workers as well. In my kitchen absolutely everything is made in-house and we share this knowledge with everybody, from trainees to waiters, as well as the guests. If they want a recipe, we would gladly share it with them and have done so many times before.” Beluga has become well known for their delectable eats, and we look forward to Chef Steven Kruger’s new Harvey’s experience! 

POSTCARDS, PINTXOS AND PAELLA FROM PINTXADA Sublime Spanish-inspired food, drink and music are on the cards at Pintxada’s monthly pop up food events called Postcards from Pintxada. The next one is just around the corner. By Ingrid Shevlin

I

t’s hard to believe that normal human beings could have consumed the amount of food we were served at Pintxada for the recent launch of their Postcards from Pintxada pop up food event, with Mexican artist Friedo Kahlo as its inspiration. Then perhaps food writers are not normal. That debate aside, I caculate we were served nearly 10 meals prepared by chef Dan Evans, and that was not including the pintxos and other starters. I think at some point we lost count and declared we couldn’t eat another morsal. But we did, ending with a crème brulee so sublime it must have been prepared by angels. Spanish-inspired restaurant Pintxada will be hosting a Postcards from Pintxada pop up event every third Sunday of the month.

The next one is on June 19 from 1pm to 3pm. You won’t get the food we were served at the launch event as that was largely a platform for Dan to show off his incredible culinary skill with flavours, textures and quirky combinations. What you can expect is a selection of pintxos, which are Spanish-style snacks, typically small slices of bread with different toppings fastened with a toothpick, along with sangria and craft beer. This will be followed by chef Dan’s paella with more sangria and craft beer. Only 70 tickets available so book soon. At the launch event we were served a selection of pintxos as well tasters of dishes such as gnocchi in a creamy sauce and kidneys in a pepper sauce, all very delicious, and bowls of serrano ham, olives and chorizo Then we moved from the bar

area to the main section of the dining room for the big food. We shared the likes of … • Dargle duck served with mango; • Grilled eland with black grapes and Madagascan peppercorns; • Local line fish with salsa rojo and pineapple; • Spanish rotisserie chicken; • Almond and pumpkin risotto; • Seared tuna with a soya based sauce; • Chaplets, small, crispy wafer-thin chops; • Charrilled vegetables with yoghurt dressing; • Crème brulée; • Lemon posset, a cream, lemon and lemon zest dessert. While fellow foodie Frank Chemaly did not much like the prevalence of fruit in some dishes, I didn’t feel as strongly. In fact, all the food was delicious, with the Spanish rotisserie chicken, tuna and risotto falling into the heavenly category, along with the desserts. The only dishes I wouldn’t order were the choplets and the chargrilled vegetables, which were uninspiring. Book with Pintxada restaurant in Umhlanga Village direct on 0826881310. Pre-sold tickets at R200 per person all inclusive with sangria and craft beers. Excludes gratuity. Live Spanish guitar music is the entertainment PINTXADA Grenada Square, 6 Chartwell Drive Umhlanga Rocks Call: 082 688 1310 info@pintxada.co.za

SURF RIDERS CAFE Tel: +27 (0)31 825 8528 https://www.facebook.com/SurfRidersDBN Our evolving menu is based around the ultra-simple concept of taste. While our Chef is a firm believer in farm fresh ingredients, in-house cured meats, and home-baked breads - there’s one other ingredient that he insists that the entire team brings to the kitchen, and that’s soul! We believe that food should taste good and do you good. When we looked around for inspiration, we were drawn to the richness, flavours and natural healthiness of Mediterranean cooking. We use good fats like olive oil and use herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour our dishes. We choose the more difficult route of preparing everything from scratch, it means that our job is a little harder, and that our food may take a little longer, but the result is something we can be proud of & most importantly, something our customers love! 17 Erskine Terrace, Addington Beach, Durban Beachfront

Johnnie Walker Green Label Starts walking again by popular demand

J

ohnnie Walker, the number one Scotch whisky in the world, is reintroducing its much-loved blended malt Scotch whisky. Green Label was discontinued in 2012 - and the world hasn’t seen much of it since, but it’s finally back! The ever popular Green Label has won a string of international awards including Double Gold and Best Blended Scotch at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in both 2006 and 2007. Vongani Chinkanda, Marketing Manager for the Reserve Portfolio at Diageo said: “Johnnie Walker Green Label has always had a following and we have listened to our consumers and are responding to popular demand to reintroduce the blend and we’re thrilled to be able to respond to that. Johnnie Walker Green Label is an exceptional whisky which is a tribute to the craftsmanship of our blenders and their great skill in selecting and blending malt whiskies to deliver a rich, multidimensional and balanced flavour profile.” Johnnie Walker Green Label is crafted from malt whiskies from classic distilleries across Scotland that have been matured for a minimum of 15 years. Green Label is a blend of only malt whiskies, with no grain whisky content, crafted from a palette of Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Island malts, delivering all the character of a single malt whisky, but with a greater depth and wider flavour experience. The unique flavour profile of Johnnie Walker Green Label is a result of the careful balancing of four key signature styles, represented by Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore and Caol Ila. “The challenge of Johnnie Walker Green Label is to have a wide flavour spectrum from malts matured for at least 15 years in American and European Oak, ensuring that those flavours really complement each other and work in harmony to create a blend of great complexity which, at its heart, is true to the Johnnie Walker style of big and bold flavours with a signature smokiness.” said Jim Beveridge, Johnnie Walker Master Blender. Beveridge adds; “Crafting this blend is all about making the aromas more pronounced and vibrant, allowing us to shape a blend that has the depth of character which just isn’t possible from one malt whisky alone.” Johnnie Walker Green Label will be available from May 2016 with a recommended retail price of R649. 95 for a bottle.May 

DURBAN JULY?

It’s hard to believe that this annual spectacle has been around since 1897. So much has changed in our world, but it would appear that one thing hasn’t - our fascination and preoccupation with horse racing (and track-side fashion of course!)

S

teeped in history, the Durban July is as popular as ever - with this year expected to raise over R200 million in bets. It’s no wonder over 50000 spectators are expected to cram into the tight quarters at Greyville Racetrack. The combination of South Africa’s best thoroughbreds, big prize money, dazzling fashion and amazing tents filled with the who’s who of SA society is enough to tempt just about anyone into a themed outfit for a day (and night) out on the ‘course. This year’s Vodacom Durban July takes place on the 2nd July and the fashion theme, “Leader of the Pack”, is all about the suits... of cards that it is! Be it Hearts, Spades, Diamonds or Clubs - these will surely give local designers something interesting to work with and we are dying to see the results! For extra inspiration, the organisers have come up with a fantastic poem:

The Leader Of the Pack We’re smiling because it’s styling, It’s on the cards you see! Show your ensemble so beguiling, At Greyville Racecourse you’ll be. All the winners are in the racecard, by the way, But for many, it’s the fashion card they’ll play. So to make it more interesting for you, The four iconic suits may give you a clue. Horseracing is a passionate sport. With participation from the HEART. So spread the love, show your hand, Your creation, state of the art. It’s fashion finesse in SPADES, And good taste and flair we need. So hold the jokers, the wild cards too, Absolute class will succeed. Club hopping is a growing trend, At this great event we know. So join the CLUB, it’s a big deal, Your best outfit on show. The final flush to your creation, DIAMONDS are forever they say. So add a subtle touch of glitz, To take the style bouquet. Whatever suit of cards you wear, Take the inside track. It’s the “styling” card that you should play, To be leader of the pack. The Vodacom Durban July Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event. 5Durban
