DISCOVER DURBAN'S SECRETS WITH BESETdurban So, Durbanites, how long have you lived in Durban? Have you ever ventured beyond your daily route of home/work/school/shopping-mall/home? When last did you wander down the streets of the city itself? Have you ever stopped to look around and/or up above you to marvel at some of the glorious old buildings and architecture and wondered about the stories behind them? Have you been one of those who have sighed and exclaimed that there is nothing to do in Durban? By Debi Blake

I

t’s questions like these that inspired four enterprising Durbanites to come up with BESETdurban - a concept that began as an idea over a couple of beers five years ago and which has now become a very large movement in our city.

“We had had enough of the bad press Durban dishes out to itself. So we decided to be part of a positive influence on how the city is portrayed,” explains local architect, Cameron Finnie. “We wondered how we could enable those interested to join us in this aim and decided on hosting a series of public events where experts would educate everyone involved so that, together, we could become informed about our city. We wanted the events to be free and on foot so there would be almost no barriers to entry.” Cameron is one quarter of the four friends who devised the BESETdurban concept which has taken the city by storm. “Photographer Dane Forman and I have been friends for ages,” says Cameron. “Fellow architect, Mark Bellingan, and I met at varsity. Jonas Barausse comes from a tourism background and has been critical in the logistics of planning the walks.

5Durban

“I lived in London for a few years and loved how the city worked and how citizens moved through their city. They had so much civic pride and I wondered why there wasn’t a similar feeling here at home. “We encourage overseas visitors and Durbanites to dig deeper as there is, indeed, a lot to discover about this city. Our combined passion for this place is more than just rediscovering the history and architectural space.” And so the conversation-over-a-couple-of-beers took place and sparked the formation of BESETdurban. “The main principles are to engage with those taking part, breaking down the barriers to entering and exploring Durban, ensuring the activity is on foot and free - to connect, entertain, educate and explore,” explains Dane. “The initial idea was more of an experiment to see if the locals were as interested in Durban as we were and keen to learn and explore.” Mark and Cameron’s field of expertise is architecture and Dane’s is photography and they have always been fascinated by adapting and

rediscovering old buildings in the city. “Durban is frequently referred to as the ‘Art Deco Capital of South Africa’ with some stunning examples of this architectural style which were mostly built in the Thirties,” Cameron explains. Their first walk featured buildings of a world-renowned architectural duo (Crofton and Benjamin) which was led by architectural friend, Leon Conradie, and took place along the promenade. Using the power of social media, Dane (with his knowledge of social media and flair for getting the best out of his iPhone) put the word out about the first walk. “We wanted to connect people by adding an educational element and a sense of adventure to the excursion,” says Dane. “We wanted to encourage people to explore beyond their usual car journeys from home to office/mall/home again. “Much to our surprise, more than 40 people pitched up for that first walk in October 2013, despite it taking place on a rainy day!” Since then BESETdurban has mushroomed with approximately 50 walks completed. “The largest group consisted of more than 400 people (during the UIA 2014 Architecture Congress)! There have been times when the authorities have stopped us assuming we were part of a protest march!” Cameron laughs.

8

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

“When there are large groups of people we generally find that others are intrigued by the crowd and end up tagging along to find out what the walk is all about!” When public interest began expanding rapidly the team had to start curating and being more specific about how to control the numbers and change methods of expeditions. Explaining that the excursions are a way of “mapping Durban on foot” Cameron adds, “There are still so many places that BESETdurban has yet to explore.” Places of interest that the movement and its followers have visited include Durban Harbour, the Esplanade, Florida Road precinct, the Inner City, Greyville, Workshop area, the whaling station on the Bluff, historic surfing spots and a recent military tour at Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR). “The military tour was very popular and successful. We tapped in on experts’ knowledge to share the vast amount of interesting information attached to the site. This is a key part of the success to our expeditions - finding specialists in their field to guide or provide input on the walks,” Dane explains. “The excursion to Durban’s Harbour Wall was also fascinating. We found out more about how the engineering feat of pumping the sand onto the beaches, dredged from the harbour mouth, contributes to the tourism/recreational industry of Durban’s beachfront.

5Durban

“In the early days the beachfront was a wild untameable coast and Durbanites in the 1800s and 1900s swam and enjoyed the protected waters of what is now the harbour. It’s discovering such nuggets of history that makes the walks so interesting!” As momentum grew BESETdurban approached eThekweni municipality who gave permission and provided buses to transport a group to the Whaling Station on the Bluff. “Engaging with the city (in particular Eric Apelgren - a top official in the municipality) has been invaluable in facilitating access to certain areas,” says Cameron. A recent BESETdurban excursion (again, extremely well-attended) was its first night walk, which was in collaboration with Design Indaba in the Station Drive area. Each walk takes approximately two hours and covers roughly two to three kilometres on foot. There is always an element of surprise to the walks arranged by the BESET team. “Even though we have completed approximately 50 walks, we have never repeated any of them. There are still so many areas of interest in Durban to be discovered! I think this is a large part of the appeal,” Dane says. “We have

5Durban

taken people to unfamiliar spots and shown them what is going on in their own backyards. And it has worked!” One aspect of BESET’s popularity is the fact that the public interest has escalated primarily via word of mouth and the power of social media. Notice of upcoming walks is also only released 48 hours before the event (via social media and a newsletter) and is fully subscribed in no time. Most of the media exposure has been via quality international publications such as the New York Times (BESETdurban was featured in ‘52 Cities to See Around The World’), National Geographic, AirB&B and coverage from Joao Silva (world-famous photographer and co-author of The Bang Bang Club).” The team is extremely proud of how far BESETdurban (‘Beset’ is the Afrikaans word for occupying and surrounding) has come. “It has totally exceeded our expectations and we never imagined it would become so popular amongst the locals,” says Cameron. “The positive reaction has helped drive the energy going forward, it is creating a platform for sharing memories, experiences and learning new things and showcasing the best of what Durban has to offer. In the process BESETdurban is creating ambassadors IN the city to promote the city!” Join BESETdurban on their next expedition by going to www.besetdurban.com or find them at BESETdurban on Facebook. 

SIMPLY HEAVENLY: FORDOUN HOTEL & SPA A visit to this luxurious five star hotel and spa in the Midlands, where I was treated to simply the best and came back glowing with rejuvenation. By Vashti Naidoo

H

eading toward our getaway we were blessed to have the best driving weather there could possibly be - overcast but warm - perfect for a drive up to the Midlands. Just an hour and a half outside Durban, but it feels like we are already in another country. The air is clearer, the sunshine somehow a little brighter. Don't get me wrong, I love the “Big City Life” but there is something magical about these mountains. The scenic route along Nottingham Road is dotted with the most interesting shops and cafes. There is always something new to discover. As we pass The Belgian Waffle House, Piggly Wiggly, The Ugly Duckling, Nottingham Road Breweries, The Junction and other landmark stops along this route, I feel excited knowing for the next 24 hours I am going to recharge and just relax - what a comforting thought that is.

Driving into Fordoun Hotel & Spa is like being on the path to an enchanted forest with sky high trees. As you drive along the pathway you catch a glimpse of lush green gardens. We are greeted by the charming, effervescent and as happy as sunshine, Jules - General Manager of Fordoun Hotel & Spa. Relaxing in the dining area sharing a pot of green tea, the resident guard dog and trickster, Trump, a happy-go-lucky Jack Russell frolics in the sunshine rolling on his back in the garden. How I secretly wished I could be him!

showing us the heated pool, outdoor pool deck, mud treatment area, saline floatation tank and the massage rooms. The hallway of the spa is delicately lit with candles, jars of lemon infused water are available at every turn and there is the most beautiful fragrance of grapefruit, lemon, jasmine and other delicious aromatic scents lingering in the air. Our first treatment is the rasul mud treatment, this immediately tickles me pink because mud anything is right up my alley. There is a large bowl of the mud with a wooden spoon waiting for us in the blue tiled mosaic room. We begin slathering on the mud which is like a childhood dream come to life, with the exception that there would be no adults to shout at us for doing something naughty. The mud is allowed to sit on the body for a while then the magic happens, the steam jets slowly fill the room with steam allowing the mud to detoxify the body. Thereafter the sprinklers gently spray us with water to eradicate any trace of mud. What an invigorating and interesting experience. We then had the opportunity to be massaged by two highly skilled therapists. There was one particular technique that involved the therapist using her forearm to massage my back, I felt just like a cake being decorated with marzipan by a palette knife, pure heaven! I liked the special touch of the therapists gently putting our slippers on our feet at the end of the treatment. I could hardly stand after the massage because my body was at this point in complete and utter relaxation mode. I still wanted to try the saline floatation tank, so we headed on to experience that facility. After changing into our costumes we entered the silo and carefully dipped our toes then continued to submerge our entire bodies in the water. The 36 degree water in the floatation tank has a high concentration of epsom salt, which I know is also used to detoxify the body and draw out excess water. What a magical experience, as you look above, the ceiling of the silo has electrical stars that twinkle and change position every few seconds. Jules did mention that this specific area is where the cows used to be milked on the farm. After the treatment we took a leisurely stroll back to the suite. I was so completely relaxed that I felt I could be having a fabled “out of body experience”. As we entered the room we see a chilled bottle of champagne and platter of fruit and nuts waiting for us on the coffee table with a note “With Compliments The Fordoun Team” attached. You can’t help but feel like a VVIP. Small touches like these make me see why this establishment has a five star rating.

Fordoun boasts a rich history - the hotel, spa and Skye Restaurant were built into and around the original 1860’s homestead and barns as well as the 1950’s dairy, manager’s house, garages and cattle sheds. The overall design and layout is intended to retain a sense of history combined with a comfortable, unassuming elegance. Wherever possible, old materials have been incorporated within the very sympathetic redevelopment. A helpful porter transports us to our room with on a cute little golf cart. Our premium luxury supreme suite greets us with open arms, room number 19. This suite just spells out old world charm and decadent yet understated luxury. The cream, duck-egg and white furnishings are tasteful and pleasing to the eye and lend to the theme of peace and tranquility. After a well deserved afternoon siesta we head on down to the spa for our special treat. Jules introduces us to Zandile and Andile. Zandile takes us around the spa facility Fordoun will make you fall in love with the countryside even if you are a city slicker used to pounding the pavements of the proverbial concrete jungle in your stilletoes, and used to being entertained at malls and the like. I have said this time and time again and will say it once more - there is magic in the Midlands. As I lay on the Victorian styled couch in the living room area of one of the master suites, I feel a wave of absolute calm rush all over me! It's that sort of blissful serenity you feel after having spent an entire day swimming at the beach. My eyelids heavy from a delicious massage, the soft sound of rain hitting the patio and having just had a shower in a monochromatic space that could fit 10 people I'm sure. I am not brave enough (yet) to take advantage of their outdoor shower facility, maybe one day I will. I wonder to myself if this isn't Heaven, then I'm not even sure what is. Peace is something

that for most people is too expensive. The peace you get to experience at Fordoun is priceless. As I marinate in my thoughts, it’s nearly time for dinner and for once I did not feel the urge to “put on a layer of cake face” (all my makeup enthusiasts will know what I’m talking about) tonight it would just be me, my skin and freckles debuting at dinner. Supper was a delicious country dinner that consisted of a beef fillet and vegetables. It was very wholesome and very satisfying. The very friendly food and beverage manager, Leslie kept on making sure we were comfortable and that everything was to our satisfaction. We retired to our stately room after dinner, unfortunately there was no room for dessert but there were lots of delicious treats available from the mini bar and snack area should the need arise. We awake to a dreamy scene, reminiscent of the rolling hills and misty mountains you would find in the Irish or Scottish countryside. You really do get transported into a new world here. After packing our bags we take a walk down to the restaurant and take a seat at a table leading to the verandah. For me, natural light is vital so I sit with my back to the lovely sun. Breakfast has everything from delicious seasonal fruits and berries, lovely rich yoghurt, pastries, cheeses and of course, a good juice selection. I made sure I ordered the cream cheese filled French toast with bacon and opted for avocado instead of the onion compote that accompanies it. This meal was decadent and, dare I say, “healthy” at the same time. For a “foodie” like me quality and taste are very important. One of the many things I love about this place is that you can taste the quality of the ingredients. Before we set off on our journey back to the beach we had an opportunity to visit the Wedding and Conference Venue. A beaming and friendly Robyn was there to greet us and take us around the property. The Wedding and Conference venue is beautiful and spacious, bubbling with possibility. I always like places that have good natural light, which this place definitely has. There are beautiful chandeliers throughout the venue and a particularly exotic one hanging at the entrance. There is a reception area that could be used for welcome drinks and cocktails upon the guests’ arrival and on the right as you enter, is a fully stocked bar area. Wedding guests are encouraged to stay at the self catering cottages which are also exquisitely decorated, with every need taken care of in a smart yet homely feel. There is also ample space on the grounds, making this venue perfect for a team building or strategy weekend. Fordoun is a vast property, rich in history and heritage with many product offerings and many possibilities. The friendly and capable staff make sure your stay is a memorable one. This is an establishment where one can come to completely relax. The phrase R & R is something that the staff are dedicated to and have a mandate to help their guests unwind and achieve total rejuvenation. That’s certainly what a getaway in the Midlands can give you and I will certainly be back 

LUXURY TRAVEL WITH AIRBNB

Luxury travel is certainly possible with Airbnb, the innovative accommodation app that has literally changed the landscape of hospitality the world over. From beachfront getaways and city lights to mountains and bushveld, there’s something for everyone on Airbnb. Heres a little guide to help you navigate through the sea of potential stays. By Meredith Haywood 14

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

5ď‚ŤDurban

F

ounded in 2008 by two savvy guys with the idea of renting out air mattresses in their apartment for an upcoming event in a town where hotel rooms were sold out, Airbnb has evolved into what is now the most technologically advanced way to travel in the world. It has allowed millions of people around the world to travel, and stay, their way. With new ideas still

5Durban

streaming through the company, they are evolving to offer more and more to every traveller. Airbnb has taken the world by storm and hosts and travellers alike are benefiting from this one bright idea.

simple. You can (and should) also add verifications to your account - these make it easier and quicker to book. If you verify by ID on Airbnb (securely), it will allow you to “Instant Book” properties that have enabled the function.

GETTING STARTED: First, you will need an account with Airbnb, you can create one from scratch, or login using your Facebook account. Either way, it’s secure and very

TIME TO GET BOOKING! It’s easy to get carried away with the process and book based on beautiful pics, but don’t be tempted to do this - read reviews and the status of the

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

15

potential hosts. "Superhost" means that the host has not cancelled a booking and has maintained a high rating on average. This doesn’t mean there's no room for error, but there's a pretty good chance your experience will be a good, if not great one!

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR HOST It’s vital that you communicate well with your host. Ask as many questions as you need to - in most cases your host will be happy to assist, and they’ll likely know the area well enough to assist with other plans you’d like to make.

Pictures speak a thousand words, but read the description and house rules thoroughly to make sure you’re getting what you want from your booking. Ensure that you read the refund policy, some hosts are more lenient than others. There are also often additional fees involved with the reservation, so once you’ve selected the number of guests and dates, you can “send inquiry” which will give you a clear indication of the full cost of your chosen stay.

Remember to let your host know when you’ll be arriving, and pop them a message if you may be late.

Be sure to read through everything and confirm what is and isn’t included - some places include limited data (wi-fi) and some have none, some have satellite TV, some don’t. Some places service daily and some not at all! So be sure to check so that you won’t be disappointed when you arrive.

16

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

DURING & AFTER YOUR STAY Remember that your hosts will review you as well as you reviewing them - so take care to follow the house rules and be nice guests - contact your host at once should any issues arise, and enjoy yourself! Please always be mindful that water is a precious resource and be kind to our water resources by reusing towels and only putting items that need washing where asked to (usually the floor). When leaving, always make sure all lights/aircon/electronics are turned off, and that doors and windows are shut (if your host isn’t meeting you at check-out).

5Durban

Then it’s time to write an HONEST review! WHAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG? What if you need to cancel because of an emergency or unavoidable circumstance? Airbnb empowers hosts to set and manage their cancelation policies. If a host or guest needs to cancel a reservation, it’s their responsibility to cancel as soon as possible. At times, certain circumstances outside of a host or guest’s control can impact their ability to meet the terms of a reservation. In rare instances, if Airbnb determines that a guest’s reason for cancellation falls within Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances Policy, Airbnb may override the host's cancellation policy (eg: flexible, moderate, strict) and make refund decisions.

5Durban

If Airbnb determines that a host’s reason for cancellation falls within Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy, Airbnb may waive the host cancellation penalties outlined in Airbnb’s Terms of Service and Airbnb’s Payments Terms of Service. Airbnb has a comprehensive list of Q&A for you to familiarise yourself with - just know that it’s the safest and most convenient way (in my opinion) to book travel accommodation. Issues are rare, and if they do arise, Airbnb has a very efficient resolution centre which will likely solve and assist with anything that arises. Safe travels folks!

We visit one of KZN’s best kept secrets - The View Boutique Hotel and Spa a hidden gem in the heart of Doonside By Meredith Haywood

A

n unassuming suburb, Doonside. Just outside of Amanzimtoti and away from the hustle and bustle - not the neighbourhood I was expecting to find a five star boutique hotel. But wow… upon entering the driveway, you know you have arrived at a place where attention to detail is the name of their game. Tastefully classic architecture and an interesting maze of stairs wind around and through the steep property.

18

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

The layout makes for a gorgeous view from pretty much everywhere. Reception is tastefully decorated, and leads to what is called the “Sugar Bar” (yes - this is a candy bar for fancy grownups) A dream come true for me - and in such opulent surroundings one could easily mistake it for a hotel in Monaco… truly beautiful decor. The view from the Sugar Bar is unbeatable.

Ushered to our room, we are both overjoyed and relieved that there is air-conditioning - KZN summers are killer! A full en-suite bathroom beckons me to the spa-bath, and that giant four-poster bed says “laze about here”. Here at The View, each room is individually decorated, tastefully showcasing the beautiful pieces in each. We were pleased indeed that The View offers full room service as well as a well-stocked minibar, making for nice quiet evenings spent snuggling 5Durban

on the bed watching movies on the TV. Admittedly I spent a lot of my stay in my bathrobe, enjoying the silence, peace and tranquility. Though we weren’t up nearly early enough to see it, I’d bet that sunrises from the private balcony are just spectacular - I shall have to return for that! After some rest and relaxation we took a short walk down to Giorgio’s, The View’s restaurant. Featuring classic decor and a condensed and carefully considered menu, featuring favourites like pizza and pasta as well as grills and seafood. My favourite item on the menu though, has to be the Valentino pizza - featuring prawns, garlic, fresh herbs, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella. The thin, crispy bases are tops in my book! Breakfast at Giorgio’s is just lovely, sipping cappuccino with ocean views and peaceful surroundings - a great way to start the day. Just a few steps up from reception is a fully equipped gym and spa. The spa offers six treatment rooms, hydro therapy, two couplesrooms with private spa bath, outdoor Jacuzzi, heated outdoor relaxation pool, steam room, indoor heated hydro bath, a rain forest shower, a post-treatment relaxation room & Juice Bar. We were treated to an amazing 45 min hydro bath session (my first one ever and it was amazing! I can’t wait to do it again!) as well as a fantastic couples massage, leaving us as relaxed as a human can be! I can imagine that the gym is great for longer stays, and if I wasn’t so allergic to exercise of any form - I’d probably have made use of the facility - which is very impressive might I add. This family run establishment feels that way - the subtle human touches make it a lovely place to stay. It’s the little things, like sugar cookies in a little jar for when you sip on that morning coffee, the gorgeous great big drapes that really do block out light, the guest amenities, which include everything from soap to a toothbrush (yep - we all forget ours sometimes, and they offer you one just in case). Attention to detail means that the whole place is absolutely spotlessly clean, yet not clinical. Theres so much character there too. This hidden gem deserves a visit… 

We use good fats like olive oil and use herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour our dishes. We choose the more difficult route of preparing everything from scratch, it means that our job is a little harder, and that our food may take a little longer, but the result is something we can be proud of & most importantly, something our customers love! 17 Erskine Terrace, Addington Beach

Brush up on some fascinating history, and learn about our heritage

NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUM Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2256 The City Hall was built in the early 1900s due to the rapid growth of Durban, which had resulted in the original town hall taking on a new mantle as the Durban post office. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum, which displays a selection of fossils – including that of a dodo – animals, birds, reptiles and insects.
