Welcome to the May June issue of Export & Freight magazine.
For a few weeks there it was hard to tell whether we were in Belfast or Benidorm the weather was so good. And while the warm weather was great, it wasn’t so nice for all of us who had to work - unless you were in an air-conditioned office, car or truck cab that is. But enough about the weather!
In this packed edition of Export & Freight we have a special focus feature on Freeburn Transport, a young transport company that is well and truly on the move.
We have our regular columns from the RHA’s Martin Reid and Logistics UK Nichola Mallon. And for this issue we welcome a new column from legal expert John McMahon.
I also report from Millbrook where I went at the invitation of Iveco to see their reimagined truck range. The truck manufacturer took the unusual step of relaunching their entire range in one go, and invited customers, dealers and the media to be the first to see and drive their new products.
In this issue we also look back at this year’s CV Show, and take a look forward to Road Transport Expo (RTX) which runs from 24-26 June at Stoneleigh.
And we also put the spotlight on our awards, as the deadline for completed entries approaches, and we introduce a new category that may be of interest to many businesses out there - Supply Chains of the Future.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue, as it has been a pleasure putting it together. Let’s just hope the sun returns as the summer break approaches.

A Northern Ireland company that has enjoyed significant growth benefitting from dual market access provided under the Windsor Framework has been visited by the Secretary of State.
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn recently visited PRM, a leading food distribution company based in Lisburn. While there, he learned more about the significant growth the company has seen from having the benefit of dual market access provided under the Windsor Framework.
This status, unique only to Northern Ireland, allows the free movement of goods between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and the EU. PRM has said that dual market access to both the UK and EU is a major factor behind its growth strategy, which over the past year has enabled it to commit to a £15m investment in its Lisburn headquarters paired with the creation of 40 additional jobs.
The NI Composite Economic Index (NICEI) from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) shows that in each of the five sectors it tracks, Northern Ireland grew in output between October and December 2024. Output rose by 0.9% in Q4, contributing to a yearly growth in output of 3.6% across NI. Whilst for the UK overall, Q4 growth was 0.1% and yearly growth was 1.4%.
The visit follows the Prime Minister’s
recent announcement of two new trade deals with the US and India. Both deals will open up new export opportunities for businesses across Northern Ireland, providing them with full market access to two of the world’s largest economies and enabling them to grow further and thrive. Sectors said to benefit the most from these trade deals include agricultural food products, biotechnology manufacturing and whiskey.
Speaking after his visit, the Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, said: “PRM’s expansion is a great example of how dual market access is helping Northern
Ireland’s businesses to expand and create more jobs.
“With full access to both the UK and EU markets, and now new trade opportunities with the US and India, Northern Ireland is uniquely placed for success.
“These are tangible benefits that are strengthening Northern Ireland’s economy and creating prosperity.”
Philip Morrow, CEO and Founder of PRM Group, said:
“While Brexit brought with it understandable apprehension, there’s no doubt that the Windsor Framework has unlocked unique advantages for businesses and
individuals in Northern Ireland.
“We have found ourselves in a very favourable position perfectly positioned between the UK and EU with full access to both markets. That’s an enviable place to be, and it’s been instrumental in shaping our investment decisions and future growth.
“At PRM, it’s allowed us to commit £15 million to expanding our Lisburn headquarters and create over 40 new jobs. Businesses here have been handed the key to the best of both worlds and that’s something we should champion, celebrate and capitalise on.”
Our Plan for Change sets out a bold vision for Northern Ireland’s economic future - to go further and faster in driving growth, attracting investment, and putting more money in the pockets of working people. Expanding international trade, cutting red tape and supporting innovation are key pillars to this plan.
The government continues to operate the Duty Reimbursement Scheme, allowing companies to claim back any additional duties paid on goods deemed “at risk” of entering the EU, ensuring fairness and competitiveness.

Logistics UK has introduced “Licence Check,” the newest addition to its Vision compliance suite, unveiled at the recent Operating Light Commercial Vehicles conference.
Developed in-house and backed by Logistics UK’s technical experts, Licence Check provides operators with instant access to the latest DVLA data—ensuring their drivers and fleets remain fully compliant with current regulations.
DVLA data shows that more than 140,000 UK licence holders are currently banned from driving and research from RAC shows only 13% of drivers would voluntarily inform their employers about new penalty points.
According to Logistics UK, this creates a situation where operators cannot be wholly confident about the compliance of their fleet and drivers and a managed process for checking driver licences is essential.
“Without checking driver licences, it is impossible to know whether a driver can legally operate a vehicle or whether they have accrued any penalty points or disqualifications,” comments Logistics UK Digital Development Director, Jemma James.
“Our new “Licence Check” module makes DVLA data instantly available across Vision dashboards removing the need for manual checking and preventing the risk of data duplication and data entry errors. At the moment, all DVLA registered
licences can be checked and later in the year, “Licence Check” will also include fitness to drive declarations and grey fleet checks.”
According to Logistics UK, “Licence Check” provides instant risk analysis for operators by presenting data in intuitive visual dashboards and fully integrating with the Vision Compliance Platform. Ms James continues, “Logistics UK is unique as a trade body in this sector having our own compliance platform and development team. We are underpinned by in-house logistics expertise, so we have a clear understanding of our users’ needs and challenges, but uniquely we have development capabilities to address these and create solutions that fundamentally improve our members’ ways of working.
“As more DVLA and government data becomes available digitally, such as Digital Driving licences, it’s important that wherever possible Logistics UK owns the technology that connects the source data with our platform. We already have a number of APIs with DVLA for vehicle MOT, tax and technical data and “Licence Check” is the latest addition. We will continue to develop in line with our users’
requirements and expect more to come in time.” Backed up by best-in class, human-led support, available at the end of a phone or on email, Logistics UK products are validated by its Member Advice Centre and Policy team to ensure it is the leading voice on regulatory guidance and legislation. Vision is used by hundreds of organisations across the country providing advanced analysis tools for all users including transport managers, compliance officers, drivers and directors. The platform empowers teams with insightful data that reduces risk by keeping users ahead of compliance trends with data driven insights and tailored KPIs. To raise standards and build confidence in the unregulated commercial vehicle maintenance sector, the government and industry have come together to launch the Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS).
Announced at the end of April, MPRS is a new single rating system introduced to bring consistency to performance ratings and generate more transparency for vehicle operators and workshop facilities.
The industry-led scheme, steered by IRTE, is the result of a significant collaboration across the commercial vehicle sector and was developed in conjunction with Logistics UK, DfT, Traffic Commissioners, DVSA, SMMT, RHA, CPT, BVRLA and NFDA. Daimler Truck UK and DAF also took part in the MPRS pilot.
MPRS reflects the sector’s desire to continually improve commercial vehicle compliance and differentiates workshops and maintenance providers, based on the competency of their people and the quality of
their facilities. A ‘Qualified’ rating indicates that a workshop has the tools, equipment and staff competencies to meet minimum industry compliance standards, while the highest ‘Platinum’ level, will be awarded to operators at the leading edge of maintenance technology ensuring full readiness for future vehicle trends, including electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered systems.
Phil Lloyd, Head of Engineering Policy at Logistics UK said, “Workshops are currently entirely unregulated, but MPRS can be a beacon of confidence for operators working with external workshops and maintenance facilities. It provides a trusted way for maintenance providers to demonstrate their competencies to reassure operators, who will know that their vehicles are being
maintained by workshops and facilities that are serious about quality, compliance and safety.” Workshops will apply for their rating through the MPRS portal, managed by IRTE on behalf of the industry. MPRS assessment is based on a comprehensive audit of facilities and staff knowledge. The “Qualified” and “Bronze” levels are based on independent assessment of self-declarations, “Silver”, “Gold” and “Platinum” will be audited by approved auditors.
Commenting after the launch, IRTE Executive Director, Emma Thompson said, “MPRS puts the spotlight on improving current standards across workshops and maintenance facilities across the nation, highlighting non-compliant and unsafe practices that compromise safety and standards
within the commercial industry.”

Most importantly, we’re staying true to our roots - our leadership and management team remains unchanged, and we’re still the same people our customers know and trust,” said Ashley McCulla, CEO of McCulla Ireland.
The company’s loyal customer base has been instrumental to its success, and the leadership team was quick
to express their gratitude. “We owe everything to our customers,” added Ashley. “Many of them have been with us since the early days, and we’re proud to say that many have become friends. Their support, feedback and partnership have helped shape who we are today.”
Special recognition was also given to McCulla’s 300-strong team of employees. “McCulla would not be where it is today without the hard work and dedication of our incredible staff,” said Ashley. “Every
member of our team has played a vital role in building the reputation and business we are so proud of.”
While this new partnership brings exciting opportunities for growth and investment, the new stakeholders are fully committed to preserving everything that has made the business successful over the past five decades. They are especially supportive of the company’s ongoing mission to be Ireland’s greenest logistics provider. Brother and sister, Ashley McCulla and Carol Thompson, who jointly took control of the business built by their father in 1992, will remain actively involved for a period of time to ensure continuity and support as the business moves forward. The Society of Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has elected a new President.
Mark Woods, Chief Supply Chain Officer of The Maxol Group, was elected President of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) at the organisation’s AGM, held recently in Killashee Hotel, Naas, Co. Kildare.
Speaking at the event, Mark Woods, newly appointed President of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, commented, “I am deeply honoured to accept the position of President of SIMI. To be given the opportunity to represent this industry, and this Society, is
something I value enormously.”
The President remarked on the importance of industry diversity and collaboration, emphasising the Society’s commitment to supporting members from different sectors. He also highlighted the challenges facing the industry, including climate change objectives and promoting road safety.
Additionally, the President called for a coordinated national strategy to support the adoption of electric vehicles and to embrace biofuels, like Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), particularly in the heavy vehicle sector, which will play an important role in reducing emissions.
Mark Woods, SIMI President,
stated, “There needs to be a coordinated national strategyone that combines infrastructure, policy reform, and cultural change. The existing incentives for Battery Electric Vehicles have been vital in shifting behaviour and must be maintained, while the diesel rebate scheme for commercial vehicles should be extended to cover HVO. Without that investment now, the cost to the State—both financial and environmental—will only grow.”
Despite the challenges facing the Motor Industry, the President reaffirmed the Industry’s commitment to working with the government to achieve climate change objectives for a sustainable future.

Since the start of 2025, more than 100 MAN eTrucks have been successfully deployed by logistics providers across Germany, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. These include major companies such as Duvenbeck, DB Schenker, Dachser, Dräxlmaier, and Koopman.
Collectively, the eTrucks have already covered approximately 500,000 kilometers. With their battery-electric powertrains and assuming the use of 100% renewable electricity, they have helped avoid an estimated 400 tonnes of CO2 emissions—compared to conventional diesel trucks consuming around 27 liters per 100 kilometers. Over a projected vehicle lifetime
of 1.2 million kilometers, each eTruck could potentially reduce CO2 emissions by about 120,000 tonnes under the same assumptions.
These vehicles come from an initial pre-series of 200 units produced by MAN in 2024, aimed at early adopters of electromobility. Deliveries from this batch continue almost daily.
“Even before full-scale production of the MAN
eTGX and eTGS begins in May, we’re already gaining valuable real-world experience with this first series,” said Dr. Frederik Zohm, Executive Board Member for Research and Development at MAN Truck & Bus. “Our approach of offering high battery modularity while maintaining a long-range capability is proving effective. The ultra-lowliner semitrailer version, designed for high-volume transport, is especially in demand.”
The Plug-in Truck Grant, which was due to finish at the end of March, has been extended for another 12 months, into the 2025/26 financial year.
Under the scheme, trucks between 4.25 and 12 tonnes can receive up to £16,000 andtrucks over 12 tonnes can get up to £25,000 off the price of an eligible vehicle.
Future of Roads minister Lilian Greenwood commented: “With freight making up 20% of road transport emissions, decarbonising the sector is crucial not only to drive down our transport
emissions, but it also brings some fantastic opportunities to create jobs, attract investment and deliver growth.
“That’s why we’re also investing up to £200m to help roll out hundreds of zero-emission lorries and install new infrastructure – which has supported the order of over 274 zero-emission lorries, many of which already have already hit our roads.”
Responding to the announcement, Logistics UK Deputy Director –Policy, Michelle Gardner says it will speed up decarbonisation by helping make the business case for investing in electric vehicles: “Cost is a significant barrier for businesses when investing in green technology, so extending the Plug-In Truck Grant will encourage HGV fleet decarbonisation by

Mercedes-Benz Trucks is planning a unique event to spotlight key issues affecting the transport industry and society—namely electrification, road safety, and the public perception of truck drivers.
To highlight these themes, the company will showcase its new electric flagship, the batterypowered eActros 600 long-haul truck, by attempting to reverse the vehicle—including its semitrailer—
over a distance of more than 100 kilometers without stopping.
With this feat, Mercedes-Benz Trucks aims to bring the Guinness World Record set in 2020 in the United States, where a diesel truck reversed approximately 89 kilometers back to Germany. The record-setting attempt is scheduled for June 4th in Oschersleben, located in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The main event will take place on a closed track, but the truck will also reverse approximately 30 kilometers on public roads as part of a separate demonstration. The journey will end at the Daimler Truck Global Parts Center in Halberstadt, also in SaxonyAnhalt. The new facility, set to officially open on July 10th, will begin handling global spare parts distribution for MercedesBenz Trucks later this year.
Marco Hellgrewe (50) from Werneuchen near Berlin, an officer in the German Armed Forces and a truck enthusiast, set his record in 2008. Back then, he covered a distance of 64 kilometers in a diesel truck will be at the wheel of the eActros 600.
Marco Hellgrewe, initiator of the electric record attempt and driver of the eActros 600: “As a passionate truck driver, it is an honor for me to try to set this record again. A lot has happened in terms of technology since my first recordbreaking drive – and to date no one in the world has taken this record with an electric truck. The eActros 600 represents the future of electric mobility in long-distance haulage and shows how manufacturers are successfully breaking new ground. Reversing for so many hours is a big challenge, but the test drives so far have gone very well. It’s a lot of fun and very pleasant to be on the road with the eActros 600.” Rainer Müller-Finkeldei, Head of
Product Engineering MercedesBenz Trucks: “We are very pleased that Marco Hellgrewe first thought of Mercedes-Benz Trucks and our eActros 600 for his new record attempt. His idea of reversing in an all-electric vehicle now testifies to a pioneering spirit which we as a driving force behind the transformation can identify with.”
Müller-Finkeldei continues: “As a manufacturer, we have always been one of the pioneers in road safety with our assistance systems. Our eActros 600 even exceeds legal requirements in some cases. In addition, the awareness of all road users must also be raised. The image of professional drivers in the public domain is close to
our hearts because we build our vehicles for them. Especially in view of the growing shortage of drivers, it is essential that they also receive the appropriate recognition for their hard work for society. Reversing is a central part of their day-to-day work and what the drivers achieve in this respect is almost an art in itself.”
Mercedes-Benz Trucks celebrated the series launch of the eActros 600 at the end of November last year at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth. Deliveries to customers began in December 2024.
The high battery capacity of over 600 kilowatt hours - hence the
model designation 600 – and a new, particularly efficient electric drive axle developed in-house enable the electric truck to achieve a range of 500 kilometers[1] without intermediate charging. This range is accomplished under very realistic and practical conditions with a gross combination mass of 40 tons, which can also be significantly exceeded depending on the driving style and the route. The eActros 600 will even be able to cover well over 1,000 kilometers per day. Intermediate charging during statutory driver breaks makes this possible, provided that charging options are available.
Combilift, the material-handling specialist, offers safe and spacesaving solutions for handling the most extreme loads!
The Irish manufacturer’s extensive range of products includes multidirectional forklifts, straddle carriers, and mobile gantries, with load capacities ranging from 1 tonne to over 150 tonnes. As a manufacturer of innovative handling solutions, Combilift has exported over 90,000 machines to 85 countries. Their equipment is highly regarded for its robust design and long operational life, even in tough applications and varying weather conditions.
Among Combilift’s heavy lifting equipment are the Combi-SC (Straddle Carrier) and the Combi-MG (Mobile Gantry), both capable of lifting and manoeuvring extremely large and potentially awkward loads. These machines can tackle the challenges of lifting and moving heavy and oversized products within production facilities, warehouses, yards or ports, particularly in industries such as concrete, steel, modular construction, and offshore wind, among others. A significant advantage of the Combi-SC is
its much lighter unladen weight compared to other pieces of heavy-duty handling equipment. This enables operation on poor and semi-rough terrain, avoiding the need for costly investment in ground resurfacing or improvement. Further benefits are low fuel consumption, 3-wheel manoeuvrability and excellent all-round operator visibility for models fitted with a driver’s cab. The Combi-MG Mobile Gantry range also offers total independence in production facilities and yards. It can be operated in tandem mode, enabling the safe and stable handling of loads such as wind turbine blades or aerospace components. With six steering options, multidirectional operation, and remote control, it allows for precise movement of even the most extreme loads.
Sustainability is a top priority for everyone. A significant advantage of the SC and MG product ranges is their light footprint, making them extremely fuel-efficient. Additionally, their large puncture-proof flotation tyres greatly reduce ground pressure, allowing them to operate on all floor conditions, including poor and semi-rough terrains. This, in turn, eliminates the need for ground resurfacing. The ability to optimise storage capacity and
avoid costly ground resurfacing reduces both the physical and carbon footprint of a site while eliminating the need for unnecessary greenfield expansion, and its associated costs.
The Combilift C-Series range of multidirectional forklifts has load capacities of up to 25 tonnes. These forklifts are designed for safe, spacesaving, and efficient handling of long and bulky products in confined spaces. Robust and built to last, the C-Series operates as “three forklifts in one,” replacing multiple types of trucks, which significantly reduces the fleet size required and eliminates time-consuming double handling, improving your workflow. In line with the growing demand for electricpowered equipment, Combilift continues to expand its now extensive range of electric forklifts. The multidirectional Combi-CB70E is the latest addition to the range. With a 7t lifting capacity, it is the most compact counterbalance forklift in the market of its capacity.
Visit Combilift.com to discover how to optimize your space and enhance the sustainability and safety of your material handling operations, regardless of the load size!

Welcoming everyone to Millbrook and introducing the day’s agenda was Mike Cutts, Business Line Director (Full Range) at Iveco.
He began by explaining how Iveco are looking to the future of road transport and working hard to ensure that their brand continues to meet the needs of its customers in the years ahead.
“In gas, in electric, in hydrogen we need to be at the forefront of that and we need to invest heavily in the future of the business to ensure we bring the best products to the market and remain competitive,” said Mike Cutts.
“We started that journey – that investment - and the first part of the fruits of that investment is our new truck range which you get to experience today.
“For the first time ever, in the history of the business, we have relaunched our full range,” continued Mike Cutts.
The Iveco daily range has been completely refreshed – from 3.5-7.2 tonnes; the Eurocargo range has also been completely refreshed – from 7.5-18 tonnes, and
the Iveco Way Range - the S-Way and the X-Way all the way up to 44 tonnes have been reimagined. Mike Cutts told the assembled press that versions of these models were all here, and that by experiencing them hopefully we (the press) would get a flavor of the direction the business is moving in.
“Strength has always been in our DNA – nothing really shows this better than our participation in Dakar Rally. This year we entered 3 teams and one of those teams won, which was a brilliant achievement (12 stages, 8,000kms, all in the desert).
“A fantastic achievement for the brand, it demonstrates our engineering capability and the strength of DNA. All our trucks are powered by FPT, who build our truck engines, and at Dakar nine out the top ten finishers had engines built by FPT,” continued Mike Cutts.
Iveco also supported Metallica on the European leg of their tour with a fleet of gas, hydrogen and electric trucks; this partnership demonstrating how sustainable trucks can be used over long distances in Europe.
“Finally another partnership we are extremely proud of is our 20 year partnership with Ferrari, providing them with 15 S-Way trucks to move F1 equipment from one race to another right across the globe. So when Lewis Hamilton’s not in his Ferrari racing car he will be driving an S-Way – just hope he wins a few more races this year,” quipped Mike Cutts.
“This is quite a special week for us, on Tuesday opened orders for
right hand drive S- eWay rigid truck. Pricing is now available and dealers are able to promote this new truck.”
The truck launch at Millbrook UTAC is the first time this vehicle has been in the UK so the press and dealers got an exclusive preview of what this vehicle looks like 2025 is a really special year for Iveco as they celebrate our 50th anniversary as a business, and to mark this anniversary a 50 year special truck has been producedan Iconic vehicle customized and available in 4x2 and 6x2 here in the UK.
BY AUSTIN LYNCH
The Iveco truck event at Millbrook UTAC launched the MY24 Truck Range including the S-Way, the X-Way and the Eurocargo.
Both the S-Way and the X-Way trucks are powered by a new engine –the XC13 - 13 litre. With this engine Iveco are bringing to market their first multi-fuel single core base engine for diesel, CNG and for hydrogen.
This is a very innovative step from Iveco and is testament not only to their forward thinking but to their investment in ‘fuels of the future’.
The new trucks are an ‘evolution’ of their predecessors with Iveco focussing on premium quality and premium design, focusing on trucks that will appeal to the drivers and that drivers will ‘like’ and want to drive and live with.
New aerodynamics, subtle mirror camera systems, new window graphics and allowing the customer to personalise the front grille of the truck are all nice touches, and overall make for very good looking vehicles.
A lot of work has gone into the interior as well with a new design shaped around the driver, and creating two distinct zones – one for work on the steering wheel side, and a separate look, colour and feel for the passenger side where the driver can take his break and relax when not behind the wheel.
Probably the toughest truck at the event, the X-Way tipper 8x4, was the first I got behind the wheel of. With 460hp this truck was more than capable of the loose gravel track at Millbrook mirroring the tracks in and around quarries and building sites where undoubtedly this truck will spend a large part of its life.
Engaging ‘semi’ in the automatic gearbox this truck pulls its heavy payload without fuss and on the narrow downhill sections of the dirt tracks you let the powerful engine brake do a lot of the work. The route we drove had plenty of steep inclines and narrow and twisty sections so I took the advice from the professional Iveco driver riding shotgun as to how best to handle the truck during the test drive and quickly discovered this is as surefooted as the proverbial mountain goat. And while outside is all dust and sand, you are enjoying the new Iveco cabin with digital dash, new seats and a host of luxurious extras you wouldn’t expect to find in this type of truck.
Next up I took a spin around Millbrook in the S-Way CNG 4x2 tractor. Fitted with Iveco’s XC-13 engine and producing 500hp and 2,200NM of torque this truck is certainly not short on power. Fitted with automatic transmission you simply put the truck in ‘D’, do your checks and drive off. It takes a few minutes to get used to the mirror camera system but before long you realise you have a great view from them – albeit once your eyes learn not to look out the window to see behind you.
I drove the S-Way CNG truck on the Alpine test track, around the speed circuit and around
some fairly narrow parts of the centre and found it very responsive and smooth and very easy to manoeuvre. And there are no clues from inside the cabin that I was driving an engine powered by CNG and not by diesel. For comparisons sake, it was suggested I go straight out in the S-Way diesel after driving the CNG powered tractor and that’s what I did.
The diesel is also powered by the versatile XC-13 engine and also produces 500hp, with 2,600NM of torque. Over the same course this truck felt very similar in power and how it responds to the throttle to the vehicle I had just got out of – it’s a very easy to drive truck with a class leading interior. Getting to drive around the oval speed track was a buzz in itself. But instead of going around the 100mph lane at the top of the circuit I
was driving my Iveco S-Way in the bottom 40mph lane and then graduated up to the second 50mph as a number of other heavily camouflaged prototype cars – and a beach buggy whizzed by in the higher speed lanes. I got several opportunities to try out the powerful engine brake and found it very easy to use and very effective at slowing the truck down. As instructed I put it into 1st or 2nd position and let it do some braking, but a bit like cruise on your car once you touch the brake, or accelerator it disengages - only to reengage whenever you get off the pedals again.
The Iveco Eurocargo is available with 160 to 210 HP Tector 5 (4.5 litre) engines and Tector 7 (6.7 litre) from 220hp up to 320 hp - all
specially designed for high truck performance in all applications. Besides the proven Tector 5 (4.5 litre) and Tector 7 (6.7 litre) diesel engines, the New 6.7 litre CNG engine uses the most environmentally-friendly fuel commercially available. The Eurocargo also features a new interior and new auto-gearbox.
“No-one has exploited the CNG potential of this size of vehicle. The Eurocargo features the first CNG engine at this size for this type of application, namely retail distribution” explained Peter Symons who gave a full product presentation to the press at Millbrook.
“We want to make sure we have the right product range, and we have developed the trucks to make sure we deliver this.
“We need reliability, and we want it to do the job. What Iveco have done produce an ‘evolution of the look and feel of the product” continued Peter Symons.
The Model Year (MY) 24 Truck aims to appeal to the driver, with the S-Way featuring a new cab interior with luxurious touches such as brushed aluminium making it stand out from the rest of its competition.
Interior features include; multi-function steering wheel, Electronic parking brake, new air-con, digital cockpit, 10/12 inch central screen to control the new infotainment system along with some creature comforts for the driver including multi-compartment storage area, extractable table and a new ladder.

Dickson & Wilson Insurance Brokers, uniquely placed to help transportation businesses navigate the complexities of cross-border insurance cover on the island of Ireland.
Dickson & Wilson Insurance Brokers, part of the Dickson Group, is further developing its insurance capability for hauliers and other transportation sector firms based in the Republic of Ireland.
Dickson & Wilson is based in Monaghan with a second office in County Meath, but whilst it operates from the Republic, it can use the collective strength of the Dickson Group where there is a cross-border requirement.
Shane Wilson, MD of Dickson & Wilson, explains. “The introduction of the Northern Ireland Protocol prevented a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and whilst this maintained the flow of goods, it introduced complexities into insurance coverage arrangements.
So an insurance policy based in the Republic of Ireland may not fully cover risks in Northern Ireland due to differing regulatory standards, and vice versa. This can create confusion, gaps in cover, and can ultimately cause uninsured losses in the event of an incident. More than four years on, businesses still face uncertainty about what they’re covered for and where”.
Wilson claims that the Dickson Group’s unique structure allows it to navigate these challenges.
“We’re based in Monaghan, so provide support for the client’s Republic-based
Have
business operations. For the Northern Ireland element of the client’s business our sister company Dickson & Co, with their network of offices across Northern Ireland, coordinates those insurances.
In practical terms, this means Dickson & Wilson negotiate with Dublin and European-based insurers for the client’s ROI-based risk, whilst Dickson & Co deal with the NI and GB-based insurers”. He continued, “Transportation in Ireland is not straightforward. Post-Brexit brought new customs requirements, VAT changes, and increased scrutiny of
in Ireland. “A penny at the pump may not sound a lot, but a small increase in the price of fuel can make or break a company. With the fluctuations in fuel cost over the past few years, we’re seeing an increase in the number of hauliers and other transportation companies coming to us looking for ways to mitigate their insurance spend”.
“With the constant pressure of increases in operating costs, drivers’ salaries, and fuel costs, it’s more important than ever for transportation businesses to make sure that they are adequately insured, and getting the best value out of their insurance spend”.
We know that a few cents at the pump can make a real impact on your costs. We deal with over 150 insurers, giving you the peace of mind that you have the best insurance cover at the best price for your business
Whether it’s for your vehicles, your premises, your employees or the goods you transport, we have the expertise to create a tailor-made insurance programme specific to you

Operators are advised to review their maintenance systems, update training protocols, and ensure all documentation aligns with the new guidance.
The logistics sector is hugely important to the Northern Ireland economy, and it must be prioritised by Government.
That is the message representatives from Logistics UK and the Northern Ireland Freight Council highlighted to Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins when they met her recently.
The meeting was led by Logistics UK’s Head of Trade & Devolved Policy Nichola Mallon and Minister Kimmins who met with Maire-Claire Reid, Managing Director of TST Group and Chair of Logistics UK›s Northern Ireland Freight Council; Graham Patchett, Council Vice Chair and Depot Transport Manager Musgrave Retail Partners NI; Anthony McVeigh, Chief Executive Officer at S&W Wholesale and Clive Whylie, Head of Operations at S&W Wholesale.
During the meeting, which took place at S&W Wholesale in Newry, the delegation discussed the critical role logistics plays in the Northern Ireland economy and how, with the right infrastructure investment and support, it can drive growth.
Speaking after the meeting, Ms Mallon said, “We would like to thank Minister Kimmins and her team for making the time to meet with representatives from the Logistics UK Northern
Freight Council. Logistics sits at the heart of all economic activity and in Northern Ireland alone there are currently more than 65,000 people employed in logistics roles, in over 6,000 logistics businesses, making, selling and moving the goods that the economy relies on every day.”
“Without logistics, there is no trade. Logistics enabled Northern Ireland to export goods
to the value of £19.56 billion in 2022. The contribution the sector already makes to the success of our economy cannot be understated but we also know significantly more opportunities could be forthcoming if our industry can realise its full potential, and that will be achieved by harnessing the power from prioritising the growth of logistics as a sector.”
Nichola Mallon Head of Trade and Devolved Policy, Logistics UK
The EU is the UK’s biggest trading partner and, if the government is to realise its growth ambitions, reducing border friction with the EU is essential. This is why the new EU/UK Common Understanding commitments announced at the EU/ UK Summit towards the end of May have been so broadly welcomed.
While the technical details need to be finalised, the reset has the potential to drive growth by easing GB agrifood and plant products trade to NI, and between GB and the EU by reducing bureaucracy, costs and border delays. It is now vital that the technical discussions and implementation are completed as a matter of urgency, so that traders and logistics businesses in NI, GB and the Republic of Ireland can realise the benefits of trading under the revised terms.
The current requirement for Sanitary and PhytoSanitary (SPS) checks on plant and animal products moving from GB to NI, and between GB and EU and vice versa, is adding time, bureaucracy and cost to traders and logistics operators. It is a burden that is particularly hard to manage for SMEs and groupage operators, as they must pay fees on each of the smaller shipments that they combine together.
A comprehensive SPS agreement will hopefully remove the need for costly export health certificates and physical checks at the border. Border checks add delays which can be costly in their own right, but even more so if they lead to perishable goods spoiling or fragile produce being damaged when being off-loaded and re-loaded for inspection.
Since the UK’s decision to leave the EU was announced, Logistics UK has been consistent in calling for a comprehensive SPS Agreement between both economies. We have been making the case robustly to government so we welcome this commitment to a joint agreement that should smooth the passage of agrifood and
plant products while protecting biosecurity.
While the technical details have yet to be agreed, our members welcome the deal in principle, yet it is essential that the logistics industry is consulted before the final plans are drawn up and implemented. Traders and logistics businesses have the practical experience of moving goods across borders. They are the experts on where processes can be improved, and it is vital that the government seeks their input ahead of the technical and implementation discussions.
Early indications from government are that the technical discussions plus implementation phases could take up to a year. It is essential that the discussions and implementation are completed as quickly as possible so businesses can start benefitting from the new terms.
Logistics businesses have already spent a considerable amount of time and money putting new processes in place, particularly in respect of the Windsor Framework, and one significant and extremely costly change coming in from the beginning of July is Phase Three of “Not for EU” labelling on composite products, such as pet food. This expensive requirement will most likely be removed by the forthcoming SPS agreement and begs the question of why a more pragmatic approach, in the interim, cannot be taken by the UK and EU. There are still challenges facing the logistics sector not least when it comes to customs.
Logistics UK continues to urge the UK government and EU to seek to reduce customs
barriers at the border, particularly in respect of Safety and Security Declarations as both seek to prioritise security and defence cooperation. On behalf of our members, we will continue to urge the UK government and EU to be ambitious in this ongoing reset of relations and in the upcoming Review of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement to address these and other trading frictions. As always, our members and the logistics sector in general stands ready to provide real-world advice and expertise to governments on both sides of the Channel to ease the passage of goods to the ultimate benefit of UK and EU consumers.
Logistics UK is one of the UK’s biggest business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, water and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.

PACCAR Parts offers lightweight cells for cab and trailer roofs.
PACCAR Parts is introducing ultra-thin, flexible solar panels that can be installed on almost every cab, trailer and body. The cells charge the battery continuously with solar energy with the lightweight panels resulting in savings on fuel, reduced CO2 emissions and less degradation of the dynamo and battery.
The PACCAR Parts solar panels are available in two sizes. The smaller version is a mere 3 millimetres thick, measures 110 x 30 centimetres, weighs only 700 g and uses 16 cells to deliver 55 Wp. The larger version is twice the
weighs 1.3
and has 32 cells that deliver 110 Wp.
The self-adhesive panels are
energy generated is fed via a converter (included) directly to the battery, where it is stored or used immediately in the cab. One large and one small solar panel can be installed on almost every cab roof. More is often possible as well. Trailers and bodies with a fixed, hard upper surface can accommodate multiple panels. The panels ensure that the driver rarely needs to start the engine (sometimes not at all) when using accessories while the truck is parked. This saves on fuel and CO2 emissions and limits degradation of the dynamo and battery. Obviously, the availability of daylight and the amount of electricity used in the cab determine how quickly the investment can be recouped.
The lightweight solar panels are now available at over 1,100 DAF dealers and service points, where the strips can be installed and connected.
Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Product Development Bus and Truck Tyres EMEA, provides an insight into the development of the new Conti Eco Gen 5 tyre.
IN WHAT WAY DOES THE CONTI ECO GEN 5 ADD TO THE CONTINENTAL PRODUCT PORTFOLIO?
We have streamlined our product portfolio to align it with our customers’ requirements of tyres used in long-distance and regional haulage. The Conti Eco Gen 5 is an ideal match here, offering enhanced traction and optimised rolling resistance.
Digitalisation is also a highlighted feature of the new tyre line. All Generation 5 tyres come with an RFID chip and can be factory fitted with the latest-generation tyre sensors as an option, making them an integral part of the ContiConnect digital tyre management solution.
WHAT ADVANCES HAVE BEEN MADE WITH REGARD TO THE TRADITIONAL TRADEOFF BETWEEN ROLLING RESISTANCE AND MILEAGE?
With the help of state-of-the-art simulation tools, we were able to put the Conti Eco Gen 5 through an extremely efficient and targeted development process.
By using a new tread design we managed to combine the robustness of a long-distance tyre with the traction capabilities of a regional one. For this, we employ a thicker base compound with low rolling resistance and a tread compound designed for optimised mileage. Optimised compounds are also used for the sidewall and inner layer. The geometry of the bead design has been modified. The drive axle tyre now
comes with a new tyre contour whose ground contact patch in the shoulder area lowers rolling resistance. Overall, we have succeeded in harmonising the conflicting objectives of rolling resistance and mileage with the Conti Eco Gen 5.
SUSTAINABILITY IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT FOR FLEET OPERATORS WHEN SELECTING TYRES. WHAT DOES THE CONTI ECO GEN 5 HAVE TO OFFER IN THIS REGARD?
When developing tyres, low rolling resistance and a long tyre life are the key levers for improving the carbon footprint of fleets and increasing their sustainability. Sustainability takes many forms for tyres. The three most important are reducing their CO2 contribution during the use phase, maximising tyre life and recycling the materials used. In the case of the Conti Eco Gen 5 it was important for us to make improvements in terms of rolling resistance and durability without compromising on the recyclability of the casings. The casing is also designed for optimum rolling resistance, while also being fully suitable for retreading. This is because consideration was also given to the tyre’s retreadability during the development process.
HOW DOES THE CONTI ECO GEN 5 PERFORM IN TYRE TESTS?
The Conti Eco Gen 5 achieves a noise rating of A. This, together with the improved rolling resistance figures, means the tyre meets the
requirements of the EU Taxonomy system of classification that has been in place since 2022. Consequently, fleet operators who make a suitable choice of vehicle and fit the Conti Eco Gen 5 will be able to declare their transport activities to be ‘environmentally sustainable’ as per the term’s EU-wide definition. The Conti Eco Gen 5 helps to meet the requirements of VECTO, improve vehicle efficiency and, last but not least, save toll charges.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THE CONTI ECO GEN 5 TYRE?
We have redeveloped the Conti Eco Gen 5 from scratch. Many of its components feature new compound formulas. One of the standout characteristics is the improvement in the casing’s rolling resistance that has been achieved by redeveloping compound and structural elements. The casing is reusable, allowing the tyre to have a second or even a third life. Retreaded tyres will also benefit from the optimised compounds and their improved rolling resistance. This all serves to underline the product’s sustainability. The combination of full-width sipes, improved contact pressure distribution and traction enhancing tread design allows this low-rolling-resistance product to be used in both long-distance and regional applications.
Strict new EU guidelines for low-emission and emissionfree commercial vehicles have increased the pressure already on fleet operators to make changes to their fleet.
Tyres with optimised rolling resistance and low noise levels make a significant contribution to this process.
With its Generation 5 tyres, Continental is offering customers a product range with innovative technology that provides the ideal basis for green fleet management.
Thanks to their optimised treads, rubber compounds and casing constructions, premium commercial vehicle tyres provide outstanding mileages, superb durability and excellent traction, combined with optimised rolling resistance. These attributes allow them to play a significant role in the creation of a resource-conserving
and environment-friendly fleet. Generation 5 tyres are also an important element in Continental’s Lowest Overall Driving Costs (LODC) holistic consultancy approach.
New vehicle concepts and those based on electric drive systems require a higher level of performance from their tyres. As well as helping to achieve maximum range, the tyres are expected to support low energy consumption by offering optimum rolling resistance, which of course helps to minimise the already low CO2 emissions of an electric truck.
New vehicle concepts also bring changes in the centre of gravity, wheel loads and torque levels. As a result, electric vehicles ask a great deal of their tyres in terms of their load-bearing capacity and abrasion resistance, and their ability to transfer higher levels of torque to the road. For tyre developers, the challenge for the next few years will be to come up with new tyres
that are geared to alternative drive systems and at the same time offer the customary top level of safety, efficiency and environmental protection.
Alternative drive systems bring about changes in various areas, above all load capacity, rolling resistance and abrasion resistance. Vehicles with electric drive systems are heavier on account of their batteries. However, they also accelerate faster than vehicles with conventional drive systems, with maximum torque almost entirely available from rest. The tyres are therefore subject to greater forces. With the Conti Urban bus tyre, Continental has developed a tyre with an increased load index specifically for electric buses operating in urban areas. The load capacity of the tyre is geared to the higher weight of electric buses. The Conti Urban HA3 315/60 R22.5 can carry up to eight metric tonnes per axle.
Optimised rolling resistance allows the drive system’s energy consumption to be reduced, and that also applies for vehicles with combustion engines. Since the EU emissions directive came into force and the VECTO tool was introduced – if not before –commercial vehicle manufacturers have been concentrating on lowering CO2 emissions.
Tyres have been one of their main points of focus, especially smart tyres fitted with sensors. And then you have the impact of recuperation – i.e. recovery of energy when braking. All of this subjects the tyres to particularly significant forces. Continental has been in a development partnership with VDL Bus & Coach, a leading manufacturer of electric buses from the Netherlands, since 2020. Continental is also working with Futuricum, the electric trucks brand of the Swiss Designwerk group.
A County Fermanagh Operator was convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £1,900 for tachograph offences. The conviction arose when DVA enforcement officers were conducting compliance checks in the Belfast area.

In an increasingly interconnected global economy, robust logistics infrastructure is not just a facilitator of trade, it is a cornerstone of economic resilience.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Northern Ireland, where geography, politics, and trade dynamics intersect uniquely.
Northern Ireland plays a pivotal role as a gateway between the EU and UK markets, especially post-Brexit. Efficient logistics infrastructure, roads, ports, airports, and digital systems, ensures the timely movement of goods, supports local businesses, attracts investment, and upholds supply chain integrity.
Local NI company ubloquity under the leadership and guidance of Kieran Kelly are currently leading the way in supply chain integrity with their leading blockchain based technology. With major ports like Belfast Harbour and Warrenpoint, and key road corridors such as the A1 and M2, the region supports critical trade flows across Ireland, the UK, and continental Europe. Investment in infrastructure upgrades can reduce transit times, lower costs, and improve environmental outcomes.
Northern Ireland’s logistics sector operates within a complex legal environment shaped by both UK and EU regulations. Key applicable laws include: The Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland Protocol)
As part of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, the Protocol creates a de facto customs border in the Irish Sea. Goods moving between
Great Britain and Northern Ireland are subject to customs declarations, regulatory checks, and compliance with EU rules on goods.
UK Internal Market Act 2020
This act governs trade within the UK, including Northern Ireland. However, it must be interpreted in conjunction with the Protocol to avoid breaches of international obligations.
Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS)
A digital platform mandatory for hauliers moving goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It facilitates customs control and is a vital component of legal compliance in cross-border logistics.
Environmental & Planning Laws
Infrastructure projects must comply with planning laws (such as the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011) and environmental regulations, including the Habitats Regulations and climate commitments under the UK Climate Change Act 2008.
Health & Safety and Transport Laws
Logistics operators are bound by UK-wide legislation such as the Health and Safety
at Work Act 1974, and specific transport regulations including Driver Hours, Tachograph Use, and Vehicle Safety Standards.
For Northern Ireland to maintain and grow its strategic position in logistics, it requires:
1. Investment in multimodal transport links;
2. Enhanced digital customs and border technologies;
3. Legal clarity and regulatory harmonisation;
4. Public-private partnerships for infrastructure projects;
5. The right legal and logistical foundation will not only serve business interests but will also bolster Northern Ireland’s role as a critical player in UK-EU trade.
For stakeholders in transport, trade, and infrastructure development, understanding the legal terrain and supporting resilient infrastructure is not optional, it’s essential.
In Northern Ireland, where every mile and maritime route matters, logistics infrastructure is more than a network, it’s a lifeline.
At Spencer West Northern Ireland we have the experience to assist with large scale logistics infrastructure developments and the key legal documentation required to implement such projects.

The new MAN Charge&Go charging service is now available to all customers, regardless of brand.
This new service makes it easier to find truck-compatible charging points throughout Europe and enables uncomplicated payment of the charging current at attractive conditions with a charging card.
A special feature of MAN Charge&Go is the unique MAN eTruck ready standard. The truckcompatible charging network currently comprises around 650 locations. By the end of 2025, around 1,000 charging locations will comply with the eTruck ready standard. In addition, the MAN Charge&Go charging card is accepted at over 15,000 other charging locations across Europe. Customers will also benefit from the continuous expansion of the charging network.
Charging at public charging points is an important criterion for customers when deciding in favour of battery-electric trucks. MAN has developed the eTruck ready standard to ensure that charging in public does not end at unsuitable car charging points. This helps customers to find truck-compatible
charging points. Manoeuvrability and height and weight restrictions are among the criteria of the eTruck ready standard. In the MAN Charge&Go digital map, the truck-compatible charging points are listed in two levels: eTruck ready and eTruck limited. While eTruck ready shows unrestricted truck charging points, the charging points labelled as limited have restrictions - e.g. in terms of vehicle length.
MAN Charge&Go centres on the simple and reliable handling of the charging process at charging points from different providers. The eTruck driver authenticates himself at the charging station with the corresponding card and the payment process is handled in the background. The charging service was developed so that mixed fleets can also use the offer. A
consolidated and transparent invoice at the end of the month provides an overview of the charging costs for the entire fleet at all charging points used. MAN Charge&Go uses the charging network with Preferred Partners from TRATON Charging Solutions. This guarantees attractive conditions for users. Customers also benefit from 24/7 support from the experts at MAN Mobile24.
MAN Charge&Go is integrated into MAN’s digital ecosystem. This supports convenient and time-saving planning and work for dispatchers and drivers. In practice, this means, for example, that the charging locations can be displayed in the vehicle or in the MAN DriverApp. The MAN Charge&Go Service Portal provides customers with full transparency regarding charging costs and an overview of the charging cards at all times.
MAN Truck&Bus is driving forward the decarbonisation of transport with attractive vehicles and new solutions. In order to make it easier for customers to make the switch, it is now crucial for politicians to promote the market ramp-up and create a reliable financial framework for this. This requires clear, bold political guidelines and the expansion of a charging infrastructure suitable for commercial vehicles. Europe needs at least 50,000 public charging points by 2030.
SAF-HOLLAND is heading to this year’s Road Transport Expo at the NAEC, Stoneleigh (24–26 June), and they’re bringing a clear message to operators: it’s time to rethink specifying drum brakes – and start driving down your trailer costs.
Visitors will find SAF-HOLLAND on outdoor stand P15, showcasing their flagship SAF INTRADISC axle and suspension systems and explaining how their SAF CONNECTED programme can help fleets take control of whole-life trailer costs. It’s been proven that even when operating at higher working temperatures, a trailer equipped with SAF INTRADISC brakes will consistently stop within a significantly shorter distance compared with drum brakes. Now, the SAF-HOLLAND team is now “beating the drum” in a different way – calling on operators to challenge old habits and explore the real-world financial advantages of switching to disc systems supported by smart tools and long-term warranties.
SAF CONNECTED is already available across the UK and Northern Ireland, and bundles together a range of benefits to help operators reduce downtime, boost compliance, and cut operating costs:
• 6-year warranty on SAF INTRADISC axle systems

• Free AXSCEND EBPMS (Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System)
• Free subscription to AXSCEND’s digital maintenance planner
Together, these components give operators better operational visibility, simpler compliance, and greater confidence in the long-term reliability of their trailers – all without adding to capital costs.
The SAF CONNECTED package is designed to make the transition to disc brakes easier, smarter and more cost-effective than ever. It’s a complete package for transport managers who want to stay ahead of DVSA expectations while protecting the bottom line.
Haldex and AXSCEND will be joining SAFHOLLAND on the stand, with AXSCEND running live demos of their telematics platform. Whether you’re running a large national fleet or a small regional operation, the team will be on hand to show how SAF CONNECTED can be tailored to your needs.

Immediately after the ceremonial handover of the vehicles by Friedrich Baumann, Board Member for Sales and Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus, to Cyrille Bonjean, Executive Vice President Land Transport at DB Schenker in Europe, the drivers themselves transferred their new trucks to the respective DB Schenker locations throughout Germany.
From there, the MAN eTGX Ultra semitrailer tractors, which have been specially developed for high loading volume requirements and allow the use of corresponding mega trailers with an interior height of three metres, will be on the road.
These trailers have been used specifically in the automotive segment for years, but also in other areas with high loading space requirements. The high loading volume helps to make transport more environmentally friendly and, in combination with the all-electric MAN eTGX Ulra Low Liner, sustainably reduce CO2 emissions.
DB Schenker and MAN have agreed in a Letter of Intent (LOI) 2023 that 100 of the electric lorries will be added to the fleet by 2026.
During the handover of the first MAN eTGX, the two companies also signed a further letter of intent for the delivery of 50 MAN eTGLs. The all-electric 12-tonne truck for urban freight transport can be ordered from April 2025 and is intended to supplement DB Schenker’s electric fleet in distribution logistics.
‘We are very proud that the first ten MAN eTGX are now in daily logistics use for DB Schenker. The sustainable decarbonisation of freight transport is our common goal. The new MAN eTruck is not only locally CO2-free, but also fulfils the diverse requirements of our customers. Volume transport is one example of this.
No other series-produced electric semitrailer tractor on the market offers such a short wheelbase with maximum battery capacity for
MAN Truck & Bus UK has just launched a series of eTruck road trials in partnership with DPD, marking a significant step forward in sustainable freight transport.
Taking part in these trials is the MAN eTGX tractor, boasting an impressive range of up to 800 km and an ultra-fast charging capacity of up to 750 kW.
Based at DPD’s Hinckley Hub 4, the eTGX will undergo a comprehensive induction and driver training program before hitting the road for real-world operational testing, towing a standard trailer on a
trailers with an interior height of three metres. The fact that DB Schenker also wants to rely on MAN for electric distribution transport with the eTGL confirms that our eTruck portfolio offers the right solution for every transport sector,’ explains Friedrich Baumann, Member of the Executive Board for Sales & Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus. MAN eTruck: Technological innovation is the key
The Ultra Low Liner eTruck MAN eTGX is a pioneer in its class: with a semitrailer height of just 950 mm, a very short wheelbase of 3.75 metres and yet maximum battery capacity, it offers a range of around 500 kilometres. This makes it perfect for applications where maximum loading volume up to three metres interior height is crucial. In addition to the MAN eTGX and eTGS for heavy-duty transport tasks, the MAN eTGL rounds off the MAN electric truck portfolio for light distribution transport. With a range of up to 235 kilometres, fast charging in around 30 minutes and a payload of up to 6,600 kilograms, depending on the body, it offers the ideal combination for quiet and locally CO2-free transport in urban goods logistics. Funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs and Transport
The first ten MAN eTrucks for DB Schenker are being funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport as part of the directive on the promotion of light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drive systems and associated refuelling and charging infrastructure (KsNI). The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH and applications are approved by the Federal Office of Logistics and Mobility.
At the handover of the first ten of 150 e-trucks: Friedrich Baumann, Board Member for Sales and Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus, Cyrille Bonjean, Executive Vice President Land Transport at DB Board Member Schenker in Europe, Marc Pühler, Senior Vice President System Operations, DB Schenker Europe, and Michael Kobriger, Board Member for Production & Logistics at MAN Truck & Bus (from left to right).
dedicated DPD route. Tracey Perry, Sales Director Truck, Bus & Coach, commented; “We’re proud to partner with DPD on this important journey towards electrification of their HGV fleet. These trials will provide invaluable insights for both companies as we work towards a greener future. As a leading commercial vehicle
manufacturer with a growing portfolio of battery-powered solutions, MAN is committed to investing in cutting-edge, climateneutral transport technologies and actively supporting our customers in decarbonising their operations.

Webfleet has launched Secure Truck Parking, a new feature that enables transport companies to efficiently locate and reserve secure parking spaces. Developed in collaboration with technology company Bosch, the feature connects fleets to a vast network of secure parking locations, helping reduce search times while enhancing driver safety and convenience.
This feature builds on Webfleet’s joint effort with Bosch, first announced at “Bosch Connected World” last year, when Webfleet integrated with Bosch’s Logistics Operating System
L.OSand Bosch Secure Truck Parking to expand its suite of fleet management solutions.
Fleet operators can now find, book and manage secure parking within Webfleet, eliminating inefficiencies and simplifying logistics. The development improves security, optimises efficiency and supports driver wellbeing.
“With Secure Truck Parking, we are addressing a major challenge for transport companies – finding safe and secure parking for trucks, cargo and drivers,” said Jan-Maarten de Vries, President Fleet Management Solutions at Bridgestone.
“With Bosch operating the largest network of secure
truck parking spots, Webfleet provides the most comprehensive integration available.”
The new Secure Truck Parking feature offers a fully integrated booking process, allowing fleet
customers to search for parking spots based on location, facilities, duration and remaining driving time. It also integrates with route and order planning, helping operators align parking choices

with logistics, workflows and legal driving limits, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
The tool provides real-time parking availability, easy booking and cancellation, and automatic driver notifications, making drivers’ lives easier and helping fleets optimise scheduling and reduce unnecessary downtime. By digitally reserving secure parking in advance, fleets can minimise delays, reduce fuel costs and meet security compliance requirements. This is particularly critical for longhaul operators and for the transport of high-value goods, where secure parking is often mandated.
Secure Truck Parking will be available to Webfleet customers across European regions where Bosch operates secured truck parking locations. The service is free to use for Nav/Live tariff customers and above, with parking fees payable to Bosch.
This launch marks another milestone in Webfleet’s mission to deliver innovative, data-driven solutions that empower fleets to operate more efficiently, safely and sustainably.
Ensure you have the right fuel to power your fleet into the future.
In the logistics industry, fuel has always been more than just a cost - it’s a critical component that drives both operations and profitability. With fuel costs accounting for a significant portion of transportation expenses, any fluctuations in price or availability can ripple across supply chains, impacting delivery times, customer satisfaction, and bottom lines. But today, the conversation around fuel is expanding beyond cost. As the world turns toward sustainability and carbon reduction, logistics providers are facing new expectations
from their customers in how they power their fleets.
Traditional diesel may still be the key fuel powering this industry but with fleets now seeking to be more socially responsible the use of biofuels including bio-CNG and HVO are being considered by more businesses. And with many operators taking their first steps into the electric world of BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) a new refuelling solution is required
to keep these vehicles powered up for the journey ahead.
Whether you’re a fleet manager, supply chain executive, or third-party logistics provider, understanding the current and future fuel landscape is essential to staying competitive in this busy, 24/7 industry.
Fuel is no longer just about getting from point A to Bit’s about doing so smarter, cleaner, and more sustainably. The road ahead is changing, and how we fuel that journey will define the logistics industry for years to come.
In this feature we focus on not only how to fuel your next delivery but ancillary products essential to keep your fleet on the road.
In the demanding world of commercial vehicle fleet operations, where maximising performance, minimising downtime, and controlling costs are essential, Texaco’s Delo 400 XSP-FA 5W-30 and Delo 400 XSP-SD 5W-30 heavy-duty diesel engine oils are engineered to help meet these critical demands.

With a fleet of 400 trailers and 120 trucks and counting Freeburn Transport is rewriting the rulebook in the transport and logistics industry.
Transport companies are often family run businesses, especially in this part of the world with many companies here in Northern Ireland involving two or even three generations of the same family.
Based in Moy, County Tyrone, Freeburn was established 11 years ago by Chris Freeburn. The business is built on generations of experience in the transport industry.
Chris’s grandfather drove for Dukes, and this passion for transport was passed down to his father, then to Chris himself.
Today, Chris’s brother, uncle, and cousin all continue to drive for the business,
carrying on the family tradition.
With a strong background in the haulage industry, Chris decided it was time to build something of his own. He bought a truck, got behind the wheel, and Freeburn Transport was born.
This proved to be a very shrewd business decision and while not unusual in itself what is quite extraordinary is how this young company is expanding so rapidly.
Today, Freeburn is a company on the move having grown by 35% last year alone.
As part of this growth the company has
acquired a number of new yards and just a couple of months ago opened a new 24,000 square feet warehouse in Lurgan.
To reflect its dynamic evolution, the company has undergone a full brand refresh, complete with a new logo and signage. The head office has also been fully renovated and refurbished, now showcasing the modern, forward thinking values that Freeburn represents.
Chris explains that the new branding is featured on all newly acquired trucks and trailers, and the plan is to update the older fleet in line with this refreshed identity.
What started with a single truck has now expanded into a mixed fleet of 120 trucks and 400 trailers, including flat trailers,
curtainsiders, chip liners, and fridges both in twin evap and meat retailer specifications. This ensures a consistent and highly
dependable service for customers through the use of a modern fleet of vehicles.
While the fleet includes a variety of vehicle brands, 60 of the trucks are Renault, with that number expected to reach around 80 by the end of the year. A longstanding relationship with Iain Latimer at Diamond Trucks has strengthened the company’s commitment to the Renault brand.
“Renault trucks have proven to be reliable and fuel-efficient, making them a strong choice for our operations. Our longstanding relationship with Iain Latimer and the team at Diamond Trucks has only reinforced our confidence in the brand. Their support is exceptional - always helpful and consistently focused on our needs,” says Chris.
Maintaining a young and efficient fleet is a high priority. Freeburn’s policies include a 3-year truck turnaround, an 8-year fridge update, and a 10-year curtainsider replacement program.
“The aim is for 90% of the fleet to be less than three years old”.
This dedication to quality was recognised when Freeburn won the 2024 Top Fleet Award at the Export and Freight Awards.
Recent years have seen an aggressive expansion strategy, with new depots established across England and new warehouse sites secured.
“We have opened a warehouse in Portadown and another 15,000 square foot facility in Heysham. We also have yards in Mallusk, and
Glasgow, plus satellite depots in Peterborough and Wolverhampton,” explains Chris.
These locations enable Freeburn to service the entire UK more effectively. “It can be hard to get drivers to work away for a week at a time, but with these depots we can employ drivers locally to work day shifts, night shifts, or weekends.”
A recent milestone for Freeburn was the complete refurbishment of its head office in Moy. Chris recognised that the original layout was inefficient and hindered effective workflow.
The redesigned space now includes dedicated areas for Accounts, Planning, Chilled and Ambient Load Co-ordination, along with a separate Business Development suite. Business Development and Operations now work more closely than ever, strengthening collaboration across departments.
New team structures have also been introduced, with Brendan O’Neill leading Temperature Controlled Operations and Clive Crawford heading up Ambient Operations.
The upgraded office also features a fully accessible driver lounge with shower facilities, and an outdoor barbecue area available to the entire team.
“We host a monthly team barbecue to raise money for charity — last year alone, we raised over £50,000.”
Freeburn has a great team and staff retention is high within the company.
“We have had many of our team with us for years,” says Chris. “In fact, our first ten drivers are still with us in our 11th year — something that’s quite rare in this industry.”
The team at Freeburn is dynamic,
hardworking, and focused on finding the best solutions for every customer. Chris’s longterm vision has always centred on getting the foundations right by creating a stable platform to support future growth and expansion.
The company’s strength lies in its dedicated team, working together to deliver dependable, customer-focused logistics solutions.
Wilson’s Country and Cherry Pipes were among Freeburn’s first customers and remain trusted partners, continuing to depend on the company’s logistics expertise to this day.
As the fleet grew, so did the team introducing logistics planners and eventually establishing an in-house workshop.
Today, Freeburn operates across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, serving a wide range of sectors including ambient, construction, and agriculture. The company also handles a significant volume of chilled and frozen groupage, supported by warehouse and storage facilities located throughout the UK and Ireland.

Freeburn has recently introduced a structured executive and senior management team to drive the business forward. Led by Chris Freeburn (Managing Director), the team includes George Lee (Commercial Director), Scott Sawyers (Transport Director), and Padraig Leonard (Finance Director), supported by a strong senior management team responsible for delivering day-to-day operations.
Technology plays a critical role in Freeburn’s operations. The company uses telematics systems from Road Tech, which provide 24/7/365 live tracking and traceability. Customers can book, amend, and track loads in real time.
Freeburn are BRC ‘AA’ accredited and provide their customers with a fully tracked and traceable service providing reassurance that deliveries will arrive on time.
As well as the customer aspect of telematics it also has huge benefits for fleet and driver management.
Telematics also supports internal operations.
“We review the truck data weekly with the planners, then talk to drivers about their driving habits,” Chris explains. “Last year, we saved 1.25 miles per gallon through better driving practices like less harsh braking and smoother acceleration.”
The benefits extend to safety, fewer incidents and claims, and ultimately, lower insurance costs. Looking ahead to sustainability, Freeburn is exploring alternative fuels. They’ve trialled HVO and are now working with Renault to bring a battery electric vehicle
into the fleet by the end of 2025.
Plans also include making the Moy site fully green and transitioning to more efficient fridges, including the Thermo King Advancer. Recruitment remains a key focus. Freeburn
is actively hiring, including drivers aged 18 and up thanks to their own in-house training programme. This is a rare approach in an industry where two years’ experience is often a minimum requirement.

Electric vehicles are simply everywhere you look.
And not only is everyone making them, they now encompass every possible type of car from city runabout to out-and-out performance machines. From Volkswagen to Porsche, and from Audi to Skoda all the manufacturers are producing electric vehicles to such an extent that every niche is catered for by what we could call the ‘electric revolution’.
With potentially big savings on running costs, and with many businesses focusing on becoming more sustainable, it was only a matter of time before commercial vehicles started to go electric.
For those in the market for a large van with zero emissions Ford Pro now offer a fully electric version of their workhorse Transit van.
Called the E-Transit this looks like, and drives like a Transit van until - that isyou go to start it up. Only then you will realise something is different here.
The E-Transit is almost identical on the outside to its diesel-powered siblings but for some blue stripes on the front grille, and discreet E-Transit badges.
But if you are waiting for the reassuring rattle of a diesel engine when you press the start button you may be disappointed! Cause as Doc Brown once famously said ‘this sucker is electrical’ (referring to the DeLorean Time Machine, not the E-Transit)
The E-Transit comes with a 68kWh battery pack giving the van the equivalent of 181hp from the electric motor - a 266hp motor is also available. Both of these models produce 317lb ft. of torque, which may be necessary when you have it fully loaded.
Ford offers the E-Transit in 15 different configurations, including three body lengths, two roof heights and three gross vehicle weights. However they have managed it the E-Transit has the same payload as the diesel-powered which ranges from 9.5m to 15.1m sq.
Thanks to our friends in Harris PR, and the Automotive Team in Sandyford in Dublin I got a chance to have an extended test drive in the 181hp E-Transit, and was hugely impressed with the experience.
Obviously, the first question everyone has about electric vehicles is the range. The stats tell us the battery in this Transit is big enough to give a WLTP range of 196 miles (315km), which should more than ample for a work or delivery van. Now I got slightly less than this but for purposes of a test drive I had no range issues. The key to the success of all electric vehicles is how and where they can be charged, and provided you have the ability to plug a van like this in overnight then the E-Transit really starts to make sense.
If you buy this for your own business use the first thing you will be advised to do is install a home charger so it can be charged each night,
Similarly, larger businesses intending to run fleets of these will have provision to charge each van to full power after each daily shift. My experience was slightly different as I had to rely on public chargers, which I will get to later.
As I said the exterior of the E-Transit gives very little away as far as its powertrain is concerned. The interior is also standard Ford stuff, and a very nice place to be. A few differences from the diesel van include that you select the drive mode from a circular dial – no gear stick, and the handbrake is also a button.
The dashboard has an excellent 12 inch infotainment screen from which you control all the usual features you’d expect –heating controls, radio, phone and navigation not to mention Android phone connection and Apple CarPlay. Easy to use steering wheel controls ensure you can keep your hands on the wheel and your attention focused on the road ahead.
I still find it a bit unnerving to start up a car/van/truck and be greeted with silence. The same is true with the E-Transit as there is no familiar engine clatter (for so many years there was nothing quite like the sound of a diesel Transit engine).
But once you get over that, and quietly move off the driving experience is very positive. The 68kWh battery seems to produce endless power, and could surely show up a few boy racers away from the lights (if you were into that sort of thing).
The suspension is brilliant, the steering very
involving and the driving position commanding.
The seats are very comfortable, there is ample room up front for three people and travelling in this is a quiet and smooth experience.
Add safety and technology together and you get some pretty cool features on the E-Transit like blind-spot warning lights in the wing mirrors, a digital rear view mirror display (coming from a rear facing camera) and a rear parking camera the likes of which I have never seen before.
All said, this is a very enjoyable van to drive, and a nice place to spend your commute / work day. And let’s not forget this is a van capable of carrying large loads. In the time I had it the van I moved furniture, did a garage clear out and took my lawnmower to get repaired not to mention school runs and plenty of spinning about.
I am not saying I am a convert to the electric revolution just yet, but Ford Pro, and the E-Transit make a very strong case for ‘anything that diesel can do – electric can do too’.
My only issue with the E-Transit was getting it charged. I don’t have a charge point at home and a severe lack of working public chargers local to me, and a slow charge time, meant I had to plan how and when to charge it up and had to leave it for several hours to do so.
That aside, you know electric is starting to win you over when you really can’t tell the difference anymore. And driving and living with this for a number of weeks I started to forget I was driving a fully electric, zero emissions large commercial vehicle.
I don’t know if the emergence of electric vehicles invented, or simply adopted the term ‘range anxiety’ but I can tell you it’s real – and it’s not much fun.
For the past few weeks I have been mostly driving the Ford Pro E-Transit and really enjoyed the experience. My only issue, and it’s certainly not Ford or the E-Transit’s fault, was watching its range go down and then getting it charged up again.
For most of the driving around town I did, there was enough charge for several days and I didn’t worry about a daily charge or topping-up the battery. But leaving the van back to Automotive in Dublin I had a drive of over 200km to complete – and I didn’t want to have to stop. Cue range anxiety!
In Omagh where I live there are only six public ESB Networks public chargers, and two of these are ‘out of order’, so that means four working. With a capacity of two vehicles each that means only eight people in Omagh – a town of over 25,000 people – can charge their electric cars at any one time. Add in the fact that these are not rapid chargers and charging the E-Transit required firstly finding a free, working charger, plugging in and then leaving for approximately five hours (yes five hours) to fully charge.
The last time I filled my car with diesel it took about 3-4 minutes, and that was me sorted for about a fortnight. For electric vehicles to be viable at the moment you need to be able to charge them overnight at your home or your workplace. You certainly can’t rely on the public charging infrastructure because it simply doesn’t exist yet. And therein lies a huge problem. If the sale of new vehicles powered solely by petrol or diesel is to be banned by 2030 – just five years away – when
are we going to see banks of public charging points appearing in every city, town and village in the land? And when are the filling station forecourts going to start introducing these. There are none near me!
Also these slow chargers are really no good – we need rapid chargers that can get a decent range back into our batteries in the time it takes to do some shopping, get your hair cut or have a cup of coffee.
If the future is indeed electric, then planning needs to start now.
The New Renault Master has been named ‘Best Large Van’ at the Trade Van Driver Awards 2025 after winning praise from those who use light commercial vehicles day-in, day-out.
In addition to the title’s own expert journalists, the judging panel also consisted of several readers that use LCVs as part of their business. Combining their extensive experience of road testing and day-to-day driving of vans to reach their verdict, the Trade Van Driver judges commented: “As this vehicle has already been voted International Van of the Year 2025, it’s hardly surprising that our judges had the Master in their sights for a Trade Van Driver gong this year. Featuring stunning new looks and diesel and electric powertrains, the Master has all engine options covered. Renault has not featured largely in our awards over the years, so the judges were pleased to see that the French manufacturer had come up trumps with this vehicle – and their vote was unanimous.”
Seb Brechon, Head of LCV and PRO+, Renault UK, said: “With the judging panel including industry professionals who rely on their vans to do their jobs, the award is a fantastic illustration of how New Renault Master really does work for business users. It’s further proof that New Renault Master sets the benchmark for the van sector and how it appeals to the owner-driver and small fleet operators that Trade Van Driver focuses on, as well as much larger fleets.”
Designed to go further, carry more and cost less, the New Renault Master is available in a range of versions spanning load spaces of 11 to 20 cubic metres*, with a
40mm wider opening at the sliding side door and 100mm longer load capacity.
Externally, the New Renault Master has an attractive new design, while the interior benefits from upgraded, premium feel materials and the Renault’s OpenR Link multimedia system. Standard in every model and including smart phone integration, the system can be further enhanced with the optional availability of
Google built-in on the Extra trim level. The hightech theme continues with the New Renault Master’s set of 20 driver assistance systems. The Renault Master is available from £33,500 plus VAT or £37,500 plus VAT after PiVG for the E-Tech electric versions. The UK Government recently announced changes to the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate now confirming that vans with diesel and petrol engines can be sold alongside full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vans until 2035.
The changes have been welcomed in principle by business group Logistics UK, but Deputy Director – Policy Michelle Gardner says they do not address the practicalities of incorporating electric vans into commercial fleets:
“Vans are the workhorses of the UK economy, and our members will welcome the clarity today’s announcement gives that petrol and diesel vans can be sold alongside full hybrid and plug-
in hybrid vans until 2035.
“The sector is fully committed to decarbonisation, but commercial vehicles are acquired and used very differently to cars, and zero tailpipe emission vehicles must make commercial and operational sense before businesses can incorporate them into fleets.
“There are still significant barriers preventing more widespread adoption, and our members cite increased vehicle costs,
lack of usable public charging, the time and cost of installing infrastructure at depots and higher regulatory burdens.
“These are practical concerns that need to be addressed, and we continue to urge government to work closely with the logistics industry and give operators the confidence to invest in green fleets while ensuring the resilience of the UK’s supply chains moving and delivering the goods that we all rely on every day.”

Running over three days at the end of April, this year’s Commercial Vehicle (CV) Show has been hailed by all involved with it as a major success.
With new vehicles and new manufacturers seemingly at every turn, and more than a few exclusives and unveilings there was something special about the 2025 CV Show. And this wasn’t just a perception – it was borne out by many of the exhibitors we talked to while walking around the NEC on Tuesday. More footfall and plenty of deals being done is what we were hearing from those manning the stands.
Kia, who had a huge stand right in the middle of the NEC, used the show to give their PBV commercial vehicle its UK debut. Kia also exclusively revealed they are in the process of establishing a dedicated dealer network to supply sales, after sales and servicing for Kia’s PBV products including the show stealing PV5 with their plan to have 40 dealers operational across the UK by the end of the year. And they will be adding an additional 10 next year.
The PV5 is Kia’s first dedicated, fully electric commercial vehicle, built on a dedicated electric platform which helps it to deliver excellent payload and cargo volumes.
Another first for this year’s CV Show was the official launch of the all-new Farizon SV large electric van.
You have probably never heard the Farizon name before but it’s the next big thing to come from China and the Farizon team was showcasing a new benchmark in the eLCV market including the debut of the largest
model of the SV line up – the L3H3.
Established in 2016, Farizon is the commercial division of Geely, China’s largest private vehicle manufacturer. In a short space of time the brand has earned a strong reputation by focusing on technology, the user and zero emissions and during 2025 the brand is launching across Europe, the Middle-East and Australia.
The IRTE used the show to launch MPRSthe Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS). Aimed at workshops and maintenance facilities of all sizes MPRS is a single rating scheme that gauges performance of current facilities and workshop quality through
comprehensive audits and collective evidence. This is a form of industry recognition created for the industry by the industry with support from industry bodies, DVSA and the Office of Traffic Commissioners.
The RHA (Road Haulage Association) also used this year’s CV Show to launch the RHA Academy, a cutting-edge eLearning platform set to transform professional development across the road transport sector.
There were also major stands from the likes of Izuzu and Ford, who this year had their usual stand just inside the main hall at the NEC but this year were celebrating 60 years of the Ford Transit.
And instead of Electric Avenue (2024) this year Ford Pro had the Backbone Café to mark how the Transit has been the backbone of the UK van market for the past 60 years. Away from the vehicles the show was also full of everything commercial vehicle related from telematics systems to vehicle storage systems –and everything in between.
The RHA unveiled its RHA Academy, a cutting-edge eLearning platform set to transform professional development across the road transport sector on the first day of this year’s Commercial Vehicle (CV) Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
The new platform offers flexible, high-quality training delivered on demand, allowing members and customers to access an expanding catalogue of specialist courses anytime, anywhere.
In a sector as essential, and as stretched, as road haulage and coach operations, the need for accessible, high-impact training has never been more urgent.
E-learning will be structured around business regulation and compliance, workplace skills and health and safety, with emphasis on transport compliance and trainer development.
RHA Training Director, Brian Kenny said: “Today’s learners expect flexibility, relevance, and recognition. This significant development will complement our existing traditional training methods. We believe that delivering high-quality training and skills development must evolve to meet the needs of today’s learners and evolving industry demands.
“Whether it’s quick, flexible on-demand learning or securing
funding for more intensive careerbuilding programmes, RHA Academy has a range of new courses available for fleets of all sizes, from small independent operators to national businesses.”
Talking to Export and Freight, Mr Kenny explained that they have been working and building this system for a number of years and during this time they have been
putting together a portfolio of training that would individually be very expensive to buy.
“We have had a tendency to focus on transport compliance and focus can be lost from basic safety skills. From working at height to unloading and unloading training and tail lift training we cover all these aspects of training in one place.”
Brian Kenny goes on to say that the whole aim is to make things a whole lot easier with tailor made courses, and using the website people will be able to log on each year and check when their training needs to be updated.
And the fact that these courses can be done online, this saves businesses the cost of getting to the training centres, and lost productivity of travelling for training.
The platform has been developed in response to growing industry demand for: Greater control over training schedules
Access to role-specific topics
High-quality, current compliance learning
User-friendly systems supporting continued professional development
All courses from the RHA Academy platform provide recognised certification outcomes supporting continued professional development in a cost-effective way. The courses are designed to upskill employees without operational downtime.

Kia UK has announced specifications and pricing for the Kia PV5 with pre-orders opening on Thursday 01 May 2025 for the PV5 Cargo, the brand’s first dedicated fully electric commercial vehicle.
Kia had a large presence at this year’s CV Show, giving the PV5 its official UK debut in Birmingham.
In the UK, the Kia PV5 will be offered in two lengths, two heights, with two battery options and two trim grades, depending on body type. There will be three main commercial body types: Cargo, Crew and Chassis Cab. A Passenger variant is also offered, as well as a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) derivative.
For the UK market, the PV5 will initially be available only in L2/H1 form across Cargo and PV5 Crew, and L2 for PV5 Chassis Cab. PV5 Cargo L1/H1 and L2/H2 will follow in 2026.
Two simple well-equipped grades, ‘Essential’ and ‘Plus’, ensure options are kept straightforward, while the choice of two battery packs offer customers the choice between maximising payload or range. The standard range 51.5kWh battery pack provides a greater payload due to being lighter in weight, while the long range 71.2kWh battery pack adds range but reduces cargo payload.
The lighter standard range 51.5kWh battery pack is powered by a single electric motor powering the front wheels and outputting 89.4kW. The long range battery pack is also front-motor front wheel drive only, with an
output of 120kW. Both variants offer a high 250Nm torque output to ensure excellent pulling power no matter the payload.
All PV5 variants offer 400V fast charging capability, meaning when connected to a 150kW charging point the PV5’s battery (both standard range or long range) can be topped up from 10-to-80% in less than 30 minutes.
Commercially designed from a blank canvas, the PV5’s main commercial options of Cargo,
Crew or Chassis Cab cater perfectly towards various job requirements and industries. Cargo and Chassis Cab prioritise cargo load volumes and payloads, while Crew (and Passenger) is perfectly suited towards carrying passengers comfortably, their luggage, tools or belongings. Thanks to its E-GMP.S fully electric platform, the PV5 offers a best-in-class low cargo load height of just 419mm at the rear, measured from the ground. In addition, the PV5 offers tight manoeuvrability thanks to its compact dimensions and small turning circle of just 10.8 metres.
All Kia PV5 variants come with Kia’s industry-leading seven-year/100,000-mile warranty as standard, plus an eight-year warranty on the high voltage battery.
Pricing starts from £27,645 (+VAT) for the PV5 Cargo ‘Essential’ with standard range battery, rising to £30,145 (+VAT) with long range battery. In addition, PV5 Cargo will qualify for the current Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) Plug-in Van Grant (PIVG) that further reduces the price by up to £5,000.
Kia PV5 Cargo pre-orders begin Thursday 01 May 2025, with first UK customer deliveries beginning in late 2025. Other PV5 Cargo variants, as well as PV5 Crew and PV5 Chassis Cab, pricing will be revealed later this year.
Marine works have begun on the largest single capital investment project ever undertaken by Belfast Harbour, the development of a new deepwater terminal to facilitate increased cruise tourism and enable offshore wind energy.
The project will see the £90m construction of a new dual purpose deepwater quay which will be able to accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise vessels, while also expanding the port’s capacity for offshore wind turbine assembly and installation. As a Trust Port, Belfast Harbour is self-financing and invests all post-tax profits in developing the port and estate to benefit the city and region.
With 146 cruise vessels scheduled to berth at Belfast Harbour this year, Belfast is already the busiest cruise port on the island and second busiest cruise port in the UK. The investment will futureproof Belfast’s position as a leading city for cruise tourism. It will also enable the growth of the already significant contribution of cruise tourism to the regional economy, estimated at between £20m-£25m per year.
Belfast Harbour chief executive Joe O’Neill, chair Theresa Donaldson and Leo Martin from Graham construction attended the launch of the project
Civil engineering contractor
GRAHAM Construction has been announced as the main contractor for the initial phase of the build. Stage one of the construction programme is expected to be delivered for the 2028 cruise season. Stage two of the build, anticipated by 2030, will further strengthen the infrastructure,
so that the port can play a leading role in the assembly and installation of the next generation of floating offshore wind turbines.
The project will create a new home for cruise tourism in the port. From 2028, the majority of cruise vessels arriving into Belfast Harbour will dock at the new deepwater berth. To maximise the opportunity for the regional economy the existing cruise hub will be returned to its original use as a full-time facility for offshore wind.
This landmark investment is a key deliverable of Belfast Harbour’s Advance Regional Prosperity 20252029 strategy. Launched earlier this year, the strategy outlines Belfast Harbour’s plans to invest £208m in significant port improvements and £105m in the ongoing regeneration and development of the Harbour Estate and waterfront.
Chair of Belfast Harbour
Commissioners Dr. Theresa Donaldson said: “Having announced our ambitious new Advance Regional Prosperity strategy only a few months ago, it is exciting to be partnering with GRAHAM to commence work on the single biggest investment project in Belfast Harbour’s history.
“As a Trust Port, our primary responsibility is to maintain and develop the Port for the good of
everyone in the region, and this project delivers on that mission. It will help us to attract more turnaround cruise calls to Belfast, boosting the economic contribution of cruise tourism, while also providing a pathway to our longerterm ambitions of facilitating the construction of the next generation of floating offshore windfarms, ultimately helping Northern Ireland and its neighbours to reach their clean energy and net zero targets.”
Joe O’Neill, Chief Executive of Belfast Harbour, said: “A key objective of this signature investment by Belfast Harbour is to attract more turnaround cruise calls to Belfast. This means that as one set of passengers disembarks, another set embarks on the same day. This will have a multiplier effect on visitor numbers, increasing associated bed nights while growing the positive economic impact for the region.
“The plan from 2030 is to utilise the facility to support offshore wind development as well as cruise. As offshore wind technology evolves, ports will play an increasingly central role and Belfast Harbour is uniquely placed, through this investment, through our existing facility, our expertise, local supply chain and location to be a key enabler of the power stations of the future in the Irish, Celtic and North Seas.”
Gerry Lennon, Chief Executive of Visit Belfast, said: “Cruise tourism is essential for driving economic growth in Belfast and the surrounding region. The significant contribution it makes is highlighted in Visit Belfast’s New Horizons Tourism Strategy and the Department for the Economy’s new Tourism Action Plan.
Premier Destination
“In collaboration with our strategic partner Belfast Harbour we are dedicated to positioning the city as a premier cruise destination while minimising the environmental impact. The development of the new deep-water quay will not only attract new cruise business but also greatly enhance the experience for visitors to our city, all while supporting Belfast’s sustainability ambitions commitment to environmentally responsible practices. This investment marks a pivotal milestone in the realisation of this transformative project.”
Paul Scott, GRAHAM Contracts Director, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Belfast Harbour to deliver this project, not only will it enhance Belfast’s position as leading cruise destination but will also play a crucial role in enabling the future of offshore wind energy in the region.”
“As the works commence, we will focus on working closely with key stakeholders and the local community delivering social value and creating impact for years to come.”
Brittany Ferries has reported another year of strong growth on its Ireland-France and Ireland-Spain routes, with a notable 12% increase in passenger numbers compared to the previous year.
In total, 213,725 passengers travelled on the company’s Irish routes between 2023 and 2024, reflecting continued demand for seamless and comfortable sea travel between Ireland, France, and Spain. The company recorded a significant increase in the number of sailings, up 27% year-on-year, with 567 crossings across all routes. Meanwhile, the number of tourism vehicles transported rose by 16% to 80,497. Freight volumes surged by 73% on Ireland-France routes, further strengthening Brittany Ferries’ position as a key player in European transport and tourism.
Brittany Ferries also resumed its popular Cork to Roscoff service, marking the beginning of the seasonal schedule. The Armorique made its first call into Cork on Tuesday, 2 April, followed by the Pont-Aven on Saturday, 5 April. These sailings are a key part of the company’s ongoing commitment to enhancing connectivity between Ireland and France, providing both leisure and freight customers with increased travel options. The company’s Ireland-France services continue to see increasing demand, with 151,490 passengers travelling in 2023-2024, a 3% rise compared to
the previous year. On the Ireland-Spain route, passenger numbers grew even more impressively, up by 9%. Freight transport also saw a remarkable increase on Ireland-France routes, with a 73% rise in freight vehicles, reaching 13,337 units transported. This growth highlights the increasing importance of the direct IrelandFrance link for logistics, particularly as businesses continue to navigate post-Brexit supply chains.
Tourism vehicle numbers have also risen in parallel with passenger growth, up 6% on Ireland-France routes and 10% on Ireland-Spain services. This steady increase underlines the enduring appeal of ferry travel, offering passengers a relaxed and convenient alternative to air travel.
Hugh Bruton, General Manager of Brittany Ferries in Ireland, welcomed the figures, stating:“We are delighted to see another year of strong growth in our Irish routes. The 12% increase in passengers demonstrates the growing popularity of our services and reflects the ongoing shift towards comfortable, sustainable, and efficient ferry travel. The strong performance of our freight operations also highlights the
essential role we play in connecting Ireland with mainland Europe, providing vital trade links post-Brexit. Looking ahead, we remain committed to further enhancing our services and investing in our fleet to meet the evolving needs of our passengers and freight partners.”
Financial figures reveal a company in good health, on a firm footing to embrace opportunities and face the challenges ahead. Consolidated turnover rose to €516m in 2024. This was an increase of 6.5% on the 2023 figure. EBITDA was slightly down at €46.8m, compared with 2023 (€53.3m), thanks largely to the effects of the ETS emission trading scheme, the introduction of which cost the company €8m. However, this is still a positive figure, underlining the company’s operating profitability.
As Brittany Ferries continues to invest in fleet renewal and service enhancements, including the introduction of new LNGpowered vessels, the company is wellpositioned to build on its success and further strengthen its presence in the Irish market.
Irish Ferries has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to sustainability and innovation with the transition of its Dublin Swift service on the Dublin–Holyhead route to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
As the first known international ferry company in the UK & Ireland to transition to HVO to power one of its ferries, this groundbreaking move marks a major milestone in the ferry sector, showcasing Irish Ferries’ dedication to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing environmental stewardship.
The Dublin Swift travels between Dublin and Holyhead in just 135 minutes making it the fastest service across the Irish Sea. Dublin Swift re-commences its seasonal operation on 16th April, 2025, when it will transition to using HVO.
Andrew Sheen, MD of Irish Ferries, and Paul Balfe, Commercial & BMS Director at Circle K, pictured as Irish Ferries announces a new partnership with Circle K, with the Dublin Swift now running on HVO fuel.
Over the season, Irish Ferries aims to ramp up usage of HVO as a diesel alternative to 100% on all four engines, which would result in up to 90% less carbon emissions compared to conventional diesel. This is part of Irish Ferries’ broader strategy to adopt cleaner energy
solutions that reduces the impact of its operations on the environment and is a testament to the company’s proactive approach to integrating cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices.
Reduction of Carbon Emissions
HVO is a completely fossilfree biofuel made from waste by-products and derived products not intended for human consumption from the food industry. It can be used to power diesel vehicles which means it does not release any additional carbon emissions into the atmosphere and is a cleaner and more sustainable
fuel option. By utilising HVO, Irish Ferries is not only reducing its carbon emissions but also contributing to the circular economy by repurposing waste materials. The transition to HVO is expected to lower the Dublin Swift service’s carbon footprint, making it one of the most eco-friendly ferry services in operation.
Andrew Sheen, Managing Director at Irish Ferries, commented, “We are thrilled to be leading the way in the UK and Ireland ferry sector with the adoption of HVO for our Dublin Swift service. This move not only demonstrates our
commitment to innovation but also highlights our dedication to reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment. We are proud to partner with Circle K as a supplier in this endeavour and look forward to seeing the positive impact of this transition.”
As a leading supplier of renewable fuels in Ireland, Circle K is providing its certified low-emission diesel alternative, milesBIO HVO100, to power the Irish Ferries’ Dublin Swift service. The company’s expertise in renewable fuels and long-standing commitment to sustainability has made them a valuable partner in Irish Ferries’ journey towards greener operations. The collaboration is part of Circle K’s broader efforts to expand access to low-emission fuel solutions across both road and maritime transport and reflects the importance of industry partnerships in driving environmental innovation and delivering real progress on sustainability goals.
Paul Balfe, Commercial & BCS Director at Circle K, added: “Circle K is proud to support Irish Ferries with their sustainability initiatives. The use of milesBIO HVO100 is a significant step towards cleaner maritime operations, and we are excited to be part of this journey. This partnership is a great example of how collaboration can accelerate progress towards a lower-carbon future and make more sustainable choices a reality in the marine sector.”
