Mercedes eACTROS rolls into MBNI truck and van on Michelin X Line Energy Tyres
Commercial vehicle dealership MBNI Truck & Van has chosen MICHELIN X Line Energy 2 tyres to showcase its new flagship Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 LS demonstrator.
The eActros – which landed the prestigious International Truck of the Year 2025 award – is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland and features the manufacturer’s striking ProCabin cab design. Keen to optimise the vehicle’s performance, the dealership specified the premium Michelin fitments, which are rated A for fuel efficiency.
Tim Moore, Truck Sales Executive at MBNI Truck & Van, says: “We’re very excited to bring the first eActros to Northern Ireland, which will play a crucial role in helping hauliers to explore how they can decarbonise their operations as we all work towards net-zero.
“For this pioneering vehicle we needed a tyre of a similar calibre,
which would allow it to deliver its best real-world range. The MICHELIN X Line products, which offer the best rolling-resistance available in a truck tyre, proved irresistible on that basis.”
Sitting on Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels, the 385/55 R22.5 X Line Energy F steer and 315/70 R22.5 X Line Energy D2 drive-axle tyres fitted to the new demonstrator are designed to deliver maximum fuel economy/ battery range while still maintaining longevity as well as reliable wet weather performance. They are particularly well suited to long distance transport applications. Technologies incorporated into the fitments include Regenion, a self-regenerating tread design; and Infinicoil, which is a
continuous steel wire wrapped around the circumference of the tyre to provide it with greater stability and durability.
Michelin’s X Line Energy range is a ‘multi-life’ tyre that reduces the cost of ownership. The tyres are regrooved once the tread depth reaches 3-4mm, helping to extend each casing’s life in its most fuel-efficient state. Once the regrooved tyres have worn, they are retreaded at the MICHELIN Remix plant in Stoke. The Remix tyres can then be regrooved. The deal was supported by Primoz Lakota, Truck Sales Account Manager & Defence Account Manager for the UK & Ireland at Michelin.

Tata Motors to acquire Iveco Group creating a global player in Commercial Vehicles
Iveco Group, a European leader in commercial vehicles and mobility, and Tata Motors Limited, a global automotive leader, have just announced that they have reached an agreement to create a commercial vehicles group with the reach, product portfolio and industrial capability to be a global champion in this dynamic sector.
The combination brings together complementary capabilities, global reach, and a shared strategic vision to drive long-term growth and unlock significant value.
Iveco Group Board recommends Tata Motors’ all-cash voluntary tender offer for Iveco Group common shares. Completion of the offer is conditional on the separation of Iveco Group’s Defence business.
The Iveco Group Board of Directors unanimously and fully supports the Offer and recommends the Offer for acceptance by the shareholders of Iveco. The offer would bring together two businesses with highly complementary product portfolios and capabilities and with substantially no overlap in their industrial and geographic footprints, creating a stronger, more diversified entity with a significant global presence and sales of over c.540k units per year. The combined group will be better positioned to invest in and deliver innovative, sustainable mobility solutions by leveraging both supplier networks to serve customers globally. It will also unlock superior growth opportunities and create significant value for all stakeholders in a dynamic marketplace. By preserving each group’s industrial footprint and employee communities, this complementarity is also expected to foster a smooth and successful integration process.
Furthermore, in the context of the ongoing, rapid transformation of the global commercial vehicle industry, the strategic combination of the commercial vehicle business of Tata Motors and Iveco Group will transform both entities, creating a robust platform with a global customer base and
geographically diverse footprint. The new company will be able to drive better operating leverage by spreading its capital investments over larger volumes, generating important efficiencies and reducing the cash flow volatility inherent in the commercial vehicles sector. It will also enable the capabilities of Iveco Group’s successful powertrain business, FPT, to be further enhanced.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Motors: “This is a logical next step following the demerger of the Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle business and will allow the combined group to compete on a truly global basis with two strategic home markets in India and Europe. The combined group’s complementary businesses and greater reach will enhance our ability to invest boldly. I look
forward to securing the necessary approvals and concluding the transaction in the coming months.”
Suzanne Heywood, Chair of Iveco Group: “We are proud to announce this strategically significant combination, which brings together two businesses with a shared vision for sustainable mobility. Moreover, the reinforced prospects of the new combination are strongly positive in terms of the security of employment and industrial footprint of Iveco Group as a whole.”
Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors: “This combination is a strategic leap forward in our ambition to build a future-ready commercial vehicle ecosystem. By integrating the strengths of both organisations we are unlocking new avenues for operational excellence, product innovation and customer-centric solutions. This
partnership not only enhances our ability to serve diverse mobility needs across markets, but also reinforces our commitment to delivering sustainable transport solutions that are aligned with global megatrends. Together, we are shaping a resilient and agile enterprise, equipped to lead in times of transformative change.”
Olof Persson, CEO of Iveco Group: “By joining forces with Tata Motors, we are unlocking new potential to further enhance our industrial capabilities, accelerate innovation in zeroemission transport, and expand our reach in key global markets. This combination will allow us to better serve our customers with a broader, more advanced product portfolio and deliver long-term value to all stakeholders.”

THE INCREASING IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT FOR TRANSPORTATION BUSINESSES
Dickson Group, one of the UK’s largest insurance brokers, is working closely with insurers to ensure they keep abreast of developments in the transport and haulage sector.
Regional Director Marlene Robinson has been looking after the needs of transportation companies in Northern Ireland for over 30 years, and has seen myriad changes in the sector in recent years.
“Insurance brokers play a pivotal role to help companies exploit the benefits of risk management effectively when it comes to their insurance cover. Insurers are interested in anything that helps to avoid or reduce the cost of a claim”, she said.
“Underwriters respond well to a range of risk management measures. A key factor in recent years has been the widespread installation by transportation companies of rear and forward-facing cameras. They provide valuable evidence in the event of an accident, but they also act as a deterrent to theft and vandalism, further reducing risk”.
The advent of AI is taking this a stage further. She continued, “AI systems can analyse data from various sources, such as in-cab cameras, telematics and GPS, to identify patterns that may indicate unsafe driving practices, such as drivers using their mobile phones whilst driving, or when they’re starting to get tired, or distracted. Identifying risks before they turn into traffic accidents is of great interest to insurers. Lower accidents equals lower claims, which equals lower premiums”. But it’s not all about technology, and more traditional means to managing risk are equally as relevant in reducing risk.
“Recruiting experienced drivers is becoming harder, so getting it right first time is vital. We can help advise on best practice for background checks, driving history reviews, and health assessments. Employing drivers with clean records and proven reliability can lower the risk profile of a company, which will produce better insurance premiums”.
And it shouldn’t just stop at recruitment. Ongoing training is proven to reduce accidents and increase driver awareness. Robinson says, “Continuous driver training programs are shown to help maintain high safety standards. We can recommend training modules that focus on defensive driving, handling hazardous conditions, and adhering to regulations”. A proactive approach towards risk management becomes all but indispensable
for some businesses. Robinson explains further. “We have clients who come to us with a poor claims record where the cost of their insurance premiums has become prohibitive, to the point where it’s impacting the viability of the business.
“But if they have the right management in place and a determination to do something about it, we’ll sit down with them and agree a set of measures and actions that we know underwriters will respond to. It’s then a question of speaking to insurers to agree pricing aligned to the steps being taken by the client. Being able to identify the key positive risk features to share with insurers is key. Many fleet operators undertake significant levels of fleet compliance and insurers will, more than ever before, want to know just how compliant the operator is”.
But when a claim does happen, immediate notification to the broker and insurer can go a long way to keeping claims costs, and therefore premiums, down. “Some insurers talk about the ‘golden hour’ – the first few hours after an incident has happened, as being vital in managing claims. We work with insurers to agree an approach on incident reporting which allows the insurer to investigate quickly and efficiently what has happened. Ultimately, it can help to reduce overall claims costs and keep insurance spend down for the fleet operator”.
“Having the right broker with the right experience, aligned to a wide range of insurer contacts in Ireland and GB, is vital in unlocking cost reductions”, she concluded.

BANDVULC ANNOUNCES NEW SIZE FOR POPULAR WASTEMASTER 5 TYRE
Bandvulc, a leading UK manufacturer of retread tyres for commercial vehicles, has unveiled a new size for its fifth-generation Wastemaster tyre.
Initially launched in 2021, the product is now available in 315/70 dimensions with a high load rating – catering specifically to operators using vehicles operating in urban waste collection and recycling centre environments.
Praised for its versatility and robustness, the Wastemaster 5 is a favourite among waste sector operators. It was developed, tested, and produced at ContiLifeCycle’s Ivybridge factory in Devon, which produces Bandvulc and ContiRe hot retread tyres.
Specialist waste vehicles handling kerbside collections and operating at recycling sites demand durable tyres. In this industry, tyres are frequently exposed to harsh conditions, facing sidewall damage from kerbing, tread damage from trapped stones and chipping from rough surfaces. All are factors that can lead to early removal, preventing tyres
from reaching their full lifespan.
The Wastemaster 5 integrates Bandvulc’s advanced ARMORBANDTM sidewall technology, providing an extra protective layer of rubber compound along the mid to lower sidewall. This tapered band helps guard against sidewall scrubbing, reduces damage, and helps extend the tyre’s service life.
In addition, the tread design on the Wastemaster 5 includes wide zigzag grooves to effectively clear mud and water, stone ejection features, stepped tread blocks, and deep pocket sipes for optimal traction and grip in adverse conditions.
A recent example of Wastemaster 5’s effectiveness can be seen in a real-world scenario with the renowned German cleaning services company, Stadtreinigung Hamburg. The tyre has proved to be perfectly suited to withstand Hamburg’s narrow roads, sharp kerbs, cobbled
streets, and challenging weather conditions experienced each year.
Tony Mailling, Head of Hot Retread Production EMEA and ContiLifeCycle Plant Manager, said: “The introduction of the 315/70 size with a high load rating further strengthens the Wastemaster 5’s position as the go-to tyre solution for operators in the urban waste collection sector.
“We know how tough the conditions are in this industry, and the Wastemaster 5 has been designed to withstand them. With innovative features tailored specifically to meet these unique demands, our customers can get the most out of their tyres while reducing downtime and maintenance costs.”
Established in 1971 as a tyre recycling business, Bandvulc has grown to become the leading tyre retread brand in the UK.
Bandvulc’s truck tyres are manufactured in a ContiLifeCycle plant in Ivybridge, Devon, which can produce a tyre every three minutes. It uses bespoke rubber compounds, developed in-house, for its range of more than 100 retreaded products. Bandvulc is committed to producing the safest, most economical, and environmentally friendly retreads, tested and quality assured to deliver the best performance.
In July 2016, Bandvulc was acquired by Continental Tyre Group Ltd. This provided new opportunities for further investment into the ContiLifeCycle plant and technologies.
More than five decades after its formation, Bandvulc remains committed to responding to the needs of its customers and the environment by driving innovation to produce the best retread tyres.

DRIVING AMBITION: INSURANCE INSIGHTS TO SUPPORT HAULAGE GROWTH
BY CIARAN
Despite mounting pressures across the transport and logistics industry, many Northern Irelandbased haulage firms are setting their sights firmly on growth. For some, that means scaling fleet capacity or entering new territories across the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and further afield as they pursue cross-border expansion and international contracts.
Others are diversifying into specialist transport, embracing greener vehicles, or investing in technology to boost operational efficiency, strengthen competitiveness and futureproof their businesses in an increasingly complex and fast-changing regulatory and trading environment. But with growth comes greater complexity and risk. Whether you’re adding new assets, expanding into unfamiliar markets or adapting to new compliance requirements, your insurance strategy needs to evolve in lockstep. At AbbeyAutoline, we support haulage operators across the island of Ireland in aligning their cover with their business ambitions. Here’s how we help businesses gear up for sustainable growth.
STRATEGIC COVER THAT GROWS WITH YOU
Too often, insurance is treated as an annual tick-box exercise. But when your business is changing rapidly, waiting until renewal can leave you exposed. Whether you’re adding new trucks, changing the type of goods you carry or expanding geographically, these shifts impact your risk profile and your policy must reflect that. At AbbeyAutoline, we work proactively with our clients to ensure their cover keeps pace with change. From vehicle specifications and driver details to load types and cross-border regulations, we tailor insurance solutions that match the realities of your operation—today and tomorrow.
TURNING RISK MANAGEMENT INTO A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
Insurers don’t just price policies, they assess how well a business manages risk. That’s why a strong risk profile is one of the most effective tools for
controlling premium costs and negotiating better terms.
We help clients demonstrate that they take risk seriously, by leveraging data from telematics, dashcams and incident logs to build a compelling case for insurers. Whether it’s reducing speeding incidents, improving driver behaviour, or enhancing vehicle maintenance protocols, we support hauliers in turning operational insight into financial value. We also help identify claims trends, such as repeat incidents or third-party disputes and work with clients to implement targeted interventions that reduce both frequency and severity.
NAVIGATING MARKET VOLATILITY
Haulage firms continue to face premium pressures driven by industry-wide challenges, rising
vehicle and repair costs, parts shortages, labour constraints and inflation across materials and services. In Northern Ireland, the Ogden discount rate continues to impact injury settlements, prompting insurers to factor in higher long-term liabilities.
As Northern Ireland’s largest insurance broker, AbbeyAutoline is well placed to navigate these challenges on behalf of our clients. Our longstanding relationships with a wide panel of insurers mean we can secure tailored solutions, even in a tough market, and advocate for hauliers with complex needs or adverse claims histories.
KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS MOVING WITH EXPERT CLAIMS SUPPORT
In a growth phase, every hour matters. Unplanned downtime due to a poorly handled claim
can cost far more than just the repair bill, it can delay deliveries, damage customer relationships and stall momentum.
That’s why we’ve built a dedicated in-house claims team, with specialists who understand the unique challenges of the transport sector. From the moment an incident occurs, we manage the process, ensuring swift reporting, evidence gathering and coordination with multiple insurers where necessary (truck, trailer, cargo). We aim to resolve claims quickly, contain costs and minimise operational disruption, so your business can stay on the move.
A TRUSTED PARTNER FOR YOUR NEXT CHAPTER
At AbbeyAutoline, we believe insurance should be an enabler, not a barrier. Our role is to ensure that your business is protected, agile, and ready for what’s next, whether that’s growing your fleet, diversifying your service offering or entering new markets.
With 15 branches across Northern Ireland and an expanding presence in the Republic, we’re proud to be a strategic partner to transport businesses of all sizes. We bring deep sector knowledge, hands-on support and the scale to negotiate strong outcomes for our clients.
Because in today’s fast-moving haulage landscape, growth belongs to those who are prepared and well protected. For haulage insurance queries or to request a quote, contact: email: haulage@ abbeyautoline.co.uk or visit www.abbeyautoline.co.uk

The service experts at Cargobull Euroservice have been specially trained in Schmitz Cargobull products, particularly for the company’s own transport cooling unit, the S.CU. Jarno Bor, Managing Director at 24/7 Assistance, emphasises the importance of this relationship. “As the European market leader in the trailer sector, Schmitz Cargobull has been raising the bar for
many years. It is a huge honour and delight that Cargobull Euroservice has decided to rely on the services of 24/7 Assistance.

SWC APPRENTICES
SUCCESS AT WORLDSKILLS UK AUTOMOTIVE FINALS
Motor Vehicle apprentices from South West College (SWC) achieved outstanding success at the prestigious WorldSkills UK National Qualifiers 2025, held at the Delphi Technologies Education Centre in Warwickshire.
After excelling in regional qualifiers, four apprentices based at SWC’s Omagh campus earned their places in the Light Vehicle category. Representing the College were Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair apprentices Craig Mullen (employed by William McGale), Mackenzie Dickinson (employed by Matthew McKeown), and Aaron Kelly (employed by Finbarr Kelly, Mountfield). A fourth apprentice, Nathan O’Neill (GM Autos), also qualified but was unable to participate in the competition.
Hosted by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and sponsored by Milwaukee, the UK-wide skills competition challenged Craig, Mackenzie and Aaron with a series of rigorous practical assessments, including diagnostics, system repairs, inspections, and working with emerging technologies such as hybrid and electric vehicles. A panel of industry experts evaluated the competitors on technical ability, planning, time management, problem-solving, and adherence to health and safety standards. All three apprentices delivered outstanding performances, with Craig achieving Silver and Aaron taking Bronze.
The six highest-scoring participants across the weeklong qualifiers may progress to the WorldSkills
UK National Final in Wales this November. From there, finalists may be invited to join the WorldSkills UK international training and development programme, a pathway that could see SWC apprentices represent the UK at EuroSkills and, ultimately, at WorldSkills Shanghai in 2026.
John Moss, Head of Department at South West College, congratulated Mackenzie, Craig and Aaron on their performance and said: “We

IFS GLOBAL LOGISTICS APPOINTS DR KIERAN KENNEDY MBE AS EXECUTIVE GROUP CHAIRMAN
IFS Global Logistics has announced the appointment of Dr Kieran Kennedy MBE as its new Executive Group Chairman. This strategic leadership move was endorsed by the company’s shareholders and directors as part of IFS’s renewed focus on growth and diversification.
Dr Kennedy brings more than four decades of experience in business leadership, particularly within the manufacturing and enterprise sectors. He is known for his tenure as Managing Director of O’Neills Irish International Sports Company Ltd and has served on numerous trade and enterprise boards, including Invest Northern Ireland.
Having joined IFS in February, Dr Kennedy is guiding strategic initiatives to expand services and enhance operational performance across the Group’s core divisions – Courier Express, Air Freight, Sea Freight, and Warehousing.
Founded in 1967 by Walter Anderson, Ireland Freight Services grew into a respected and successful logistics business under his leadership. Following Mr Anderson’s passing in 2022, ownership transitioned to his two daughters, who now play an active role in the business’s ongoing development.
Recognising the need for renewed strategic direction, the leadership team appointed Dr Kennedy to provide experienced oversight and help steer the company into its next phase of growth.
Dr Kennedy explains that a comprehensive fiveyear strategic plan has been developed with the ambitious goal of significantly increasing the growth and turnover of the Group. Key elements of this plan include the recruitment of additional Business Development Managers and growth through targeted acquisitions.
“The opportunity to lead IFS at this pivotal
stage is one I welcome. My aim is to strengthen all areas of the Group’s service offering and position IFS as a one-stopshop for logistics,” said Dr Kennedy. “We have a clear roadmap and are confident in our ability to deliver sustained growth.”
IFS has a proven track record of expansion through acquisition. In 1990, it incorporated Williames Airfreight into its operations, followed by the acquisition of BRS Air Cargo in 1994, moves that firmly established IFS Global Logistics as Northern Ireland’s leading privately owned IATA freight forwarding company.
Further expansion came in 1998 with the launch of IFS Courier Express, marking the company’s
entry into global express courier services, including door-to-door international delivery.
Today, the company continues to invest in its infrastructure, including ‘Vendorvillage’, a 250,000 sq. ft. warehousing and bonded storage facility in Kilroot, Carrickfergus, designed to meet the growing demands of e-commerce and cross-border trade.
A key component of the Group’s growth strategy is investment in its people. Through a partnership with 21Training, IFS is actively supporting the personal development and career progression of its workforce.
Staff are being upskilled across a range of disciplines, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to thrive in a fast-evolving logistics landscape. This focus on training not only strengthens the business internally but also ensures that customers benefit from the highest standards of service and professionalism.
Describing his role as “very handson,” Dr Kennedy notes that one of the company’s strengths is its flexibility and responsiveness to customer needs.
“With the opportunities emerging from the Windsor Framework and the continued rise in e-commerce, we are in a strong position to expand our customer base and deepen relationships with existing clients. IFS is a fantastic company with a supportive culture and clear ambition,” he concluded.
Kieran Kennedy.

IGGY STILL TRUCKING AT 80 YEARS OF AGE
Keeping his mind and body active are two of the main reasons why Ignatius Kelly (known to all as Iggy) from Draperstown is still driving a truck at 80 years of age.
Iggy, who turned 80 in May 2025, has been driving for over 60 years and currently works for Lissan Coal Company (LCC).
“I have always been a driver. My father was an agricultural contractor, and when I left school at 16 I started helping him driving tractors, threshers and bailers. My father then started buying spuds and selling fertilizer so I helped out with this too driving lorries and doing deliveries.”
Asked about his lifetime behind the wheel, Iggy admits ‘I can’t do anything else. I am used to going to work and I have always
enjoyed it. Going to work every day and watching the traffic as you drive keeps the mind active. I believe driving keeps my mind and body active and I can honestly say I have no aches and pains,” continues Iggy.
“And I would also say I am not driving for the money- it’s the work and having something to get up for each morning that motivates me.
During his long driving career Iggy explains that he spent 26 years driving trucks on the continent before returning to Northern Ireland where he drove for a few local firms for a number of years.
Iggy explains that it was hard work and long hours – ‘working 8 days a week’ – so he started to look around for some work closer to home.
“One day I asked Michael Loughran from LCC was there any chance of a job - I was sixty at the time. I was offered a job and I
have been working with LCC ever since.
“But I was told I wouldn’t be sleeping in trucks all over the country, so I now drive tippers, five days a week which suits me down to the ground, and I am home again every night.
Iggy credits his long driving career as the secret to his good health, and believes if the brain has nothing to do it degenerates. That’s why he is happy to get up and go to his work every morning.
From the age of 70 Iggy, as with everyone his age, has to complete a medical to keep his HGV licence, but this doesn’t bother him in the slightest, and he has no plans to retire just yet.
“I have worked all my life and I don’t know any other way of life. That’s why I am still driving and will keep driving.”

INVESTMENT IN ROAD NETWORK IS ESSENTIAL TO GROWTH OF ECONOMY
Recent ONS GDP figures show the overall UK economy shrank by 0.3%. These figures highlight the impact of higher national insurance costs for employers and are also set against the backdrop of higher energy bills and trade uncertainty following the U.S. tariffs.
With rising costs and lower profits, some businesses are having to make savings wherever possible, and others have unfortunately no choice but to close their doors, citing costs and administrative challenges.
If the UK Government and the respective administrations at Stormont, Holyrood and Cardiff Bay are serious about economic recovery and growth, they must work collaboratively with industries like ours that are crucial to the economic health of our four nations.
In our reaction to the recent spending review, and in a series of recent RHA reports, we’ve clearly set out what businesses in our space need to help achieve growth.
The starting point is a fit for purpose road network that reduces congestion, connects communities and keeps goods and materials moving. Without proper investment in our roads, the economic recovery we need simply cannot happen. Take the A75 corridor on south Scotland and the A55 in North England by way of example. Both absolutely essential for the NI economy and that of the UK as a whole and both are screaming out for investment.
At the end of June a High Court judge in Belfast ruled that construction on the A5 should “not go ahead in its current form because the plans do not comply with government climate change targets”.
I am unsure how keeping a key freight road which has known safety issues, and which needs upgrading, benefits the climate in its current state but I do know that major investment in our road network is also crucial to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with Government plans such as housing targets. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins says she has “lots to
consider” after the judgement but this is the third time in 18 years that approval for the project has been overturned in court. Congestion caused by inadequate roads directly undermines business productivity and therefore undermines the growth we want to see.
Another key starting point is skills and training.
If we are to recruit the 40,000 drivers UK wide we need each year for the next five years to keep up with demand, training and skills investment is also required to recruit, train and retain staff to future-proof our sector with a long-term workforce in place. We need to see more emphasis from our devolved Government’s to invest in skills.
If we are to encourage business investment, firms across the road transport and logistics space will need to see conditions in place that
will allow them to survive, grow and thrive.
We’ve been consistent with our view that the road transport sector has a massive part to play in the mission of driving forward growth. The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is preparing a draft consultation on how transport is a social, economic and environmental enabler and will establish a set of transport priorities for the Department to deliver against.
I would urge everyone in the sector to point out the need for investment in roads to ensure growth.
Partnership and collaboration between industry and government is therefore key. We will continue to engage with decision-makers at all levels across the four nations and collaborate with trusted partners to advance policies that enable future growth and investment.

FUEL DUTY CUT CAN BE £5 BILLION CATALYST TO JUMP START ECONOMY
Logistics sits at the heart of all economic activity across these islands and plays a vital role in growth and economic development. In Northern Ireland alone, there are currently more than 65,000 people employed in logistics roles, in over 6,000 logistics businesses, making, selling and moving the goods that the economy relies on every day. Without logistics, there is no trade and the sector enabled Northern Ireland to export goods to the value of £19.56 billion in 2022.
The importance of logistics to the economy is clear, but with appropriate policy support it can contribute even more and help drive growth across the economy. When we surveyed businesses for our annual Logistics Report 2025, our members were united on the clear policy action they wanted from government this autumn - a cut in fuel duty. Fuel is a significant expense for logistics businesses, representing one third of the industry’s costs and 60% identified a reduction in fuel duty as the policy they would like the government to deliver to help drive investment and growth. The temporary five pence per litre cut is scheduled to end in March 2026 and there is a temptation for industry to call for an extension. However, the most effective way this government could support our industry and help it to drive economic growth in the coming year is to not just avoid a rise in fuel duty, but to actually cut it. We recommend Chancellor Rachel Reeves does exactly this in her Autumn Statement and cuts duty to kickstart economic activity
and growth across all sectors. With business uncertainty still high, a bold move is needed to support our members and ensure they can deliver confidently for customers and consumers.
According to Logistics UK, a 10p per litre cut in fuel duty will reduce fuel costs across the UK by almost £5 billion* a year for both industry and consumers, which will allow businesses to invest and help drive growth. It would also help grow the economy through increases in consumer spending, putting money in the pockets of people across these islands. In Northern Ireland, where road transport is essential for cross-border trade and rural connectivity, a fuel duty cut would have an especially significant impact, helping local businesses remain competitive and easing pressure on consumers.
Logistics businesses ensure our shops, businesses, hospitals and homes are supplied with the goods they need. Increasing the duty payable on fuel, with no viable business alternative currently available, would not just hit our industry at a time when many
businesses are struggling as a result of increased costs, but also mean an inflationary knock-on effect to consumers, who would receive a double whammy of increased prices in the shops as well as at the pumps. For Northern Ireland, which faces unique challenges due to its geographical separation from Great Britain and its reliance on both UK and EU trading rules, additional fuel costs could further strain already stretched supply chains and impact cross-border trade with the Republic of Ireland. We are operating in sluggish times - growth is now predicted to be 1.1% during 2025 and our Logistics Report shows that overall business confidence has declined compared to previous years. In this environment, we need a brave and confident government to take the steps needed to jump start the economy. A significant cut to fuel duty will free up levels of cash which can then be used to invest in the key areas that help ease trade – a move that would give Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK the boost it needs to kickstart the economy.
Logistics UK is one of the UK’s biggest business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, water and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods. For more information about the organisation and its work, please visit logistics.org.uk *Logistics UK’s analysis of fuel usage and fuel duty is calculated with the assumption that the amount of fuel used and number of vehicles remains constant and shows a 10p reduction in fuel duty will cut costs for businesses and consumers by approximately £4.7 billion a year. COLD STORE EVOLUTION: HOW DERRY GROUP AND MOFFETT AUTOMATION ARE REDEFINING CHILLED LOGISTICS
In a bold move to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and food safety in cold chain logistics, Derry Group Ireland has partnered with Moffett Automation to transform its Carn facility into one of the most advanced automated cold stores in the country. The result? A clean, intelligent, high-performance warehouse system delivering unrivalled precision, energy savings, and peace of mind for customers and auditors alike.
Two years ago, Derry Group was preparing to expand its operations in Craigavon with a new 5,000-pallet warehouse. While early plans leaned towards traditional VNA racking, the discovery of Moffett Automation’s cutting-edge robotic system changed the trajectory entirely. By adopting this innovative solution, the Group reduced its build footprint by 35% while increasing storage density and futureproofing operations.
“While the upfront investment was significant, once we mapped out the longterm savings and efficiency gains, the decision became clear,” says Patrick Derry, Managing Director at Derry Group Ireland. “What you get back in accuracy, safety, and speed makes it more than worthwhile.”
EFFICIENCY ENGINEERED
At the heart of the system lies a network of autonomous 300kg robotic “taxis,” which handle all pallet movements from a single-entry point. After scanning, compliant pallets are guided through ambient or chilled chambers and placed with pinpoint accuracy. When it’s time to dispatch, the system retrieves each pallet and delivers it to the outbound dock – all without human intervention.
“The system is black and white,” Patrick explains. “If a pallet goes in right, it comes out right. There’s no guesswork, no damage, no delay.” Importantly, the system won’t accept substandard pallets. Loose wrapping, poor labelling, or damaged bases are rejected immediately – pushing higher standards across the supply chain and dramatically improving stock accuracy.
ENERGY, HYGIENE AND SAFETY: A WINNING TRIFECTA
Beyond speed and storage, the Carn facility is now a model of sustainability and food
safety. Operating in complete darkness, the automated warehouse no longer requires lighting or the high refrigeration loads needed for manned environments.
“There’s minimal strain on the cooling system. No forklifts, no staff inside – just perfectly chilled product in a fully sealed, clean environment,” Patrick says. “Health and safety has improved massively. No one is working at height, and our insurance premiums have dropped by 60%.”
With fewer moving parts and no human traffic in the storage area, hygiene is easier to manage – a key advantage when maintaining BRCGS and DQMP food safety accreditations. Routine audits have become simpler, faster, and less stressful. “If an auditor wants to check a pallet, it’s just a button press. It’s beside you in two minutes.”
“For BRCGS we must show traceability of every pallet / of every load we have from the collection point of the factory to the storage element to delivery. To have these accreditations means you are leading in the industry,” commented
Fiona Derry, Director Derry Group.
CUSTOMER CONFIDENCE THROUGH CONTROL
Moffett Automation’s system has also had a measurable impact on service levels. Pallets are picked overnight and queued for early-morning loading, cutting labour hours and improving delivery reliability. Customers benefit from greater control, full traceability, and confidence that their stock is handled with precision.
“Everything is where it’s supposed to be. There’s no scrambling, no missed slots. Our clients love the transparency and traceability. It’s a level of assurance that sets us apart,” Patrick adds. With up to 4,000 pallets moved every night across Ireland, the Carn site is now the nerve centre of Derry Group’s temperaturecontrolled logistics operation. And with
FUTURE-FORWARD COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS
For Moffett Automation, the success at Derry Group exemplifies the potential of smart systems in food logistics. “We’re proud to support a forward-thinking company like Derry Group,” says Sam Moffett, CEO of Moffett Automation. “Together, we’re showing how automation can deliver on sustainability, safety, and service – all at once.” In an industry where precision, compliance, and consistency are everything, this collaboration offers a blueprint for the future of cold storage.
BY ADOPTING THIS INNOVATIVE SOLUTION, THE GROUP REDUCED ITS BUILD FOOTPRINT BY 35% WHILE INCREASING STORAGE DENSITY AND FUTUREPROOFING OPERATIONS.
full scalability – adding more robots during peak times without increasing staff – the system is built to adapt as demand grows.

EXPLORING THE NEW SUPER
11-LITRE ENGINE AT SCANIA HQ
Scania offer a rare glimpse into their production facilities in Sodertalje as they launch their newest, and most versatile powertrain
BY AUSTIN LYNCH
More efficiency, more versatility and more return for every drop of fuel is what Scania promise customers of their new state of the art Super 11-litre engine.
Positioned between existing 9-litre and 13-litre powertrains the Super 11 litre engine is engineered for superior performance and precision.
Scania have made the new engine lighter than the 13-litre, more fuel efficient than the 9 litre and overall more versatile and more refined - designed to meet today’s toughest challenges while aligning with tomorrow’s sustainable goals.
The new engine provides up to 7% lower fuel consumption compared to the previous Scania 9-litre engine; it produces higher torque at lower revs, enhances control, responsiveness, and engine longevity. And Scania confirm that with its optimised weight and compact design increase payload capacity without compromise the 11 litre will fit into any chassis the 9-litre fits into.
Just hours after Scania hosted the world reveal of the new Super 11 engine at Road Transport Expo (RTX) a number of journalists, including myself, were on our way to the home of Scania in Sweden to learn more about their new ‘state of the art’ engine.
Scania’s head office, and one of their primary production facilities is located in the industrial town of Sodertalje just a short distance outside Stockholm in Sweden. This is where Scania’s main research and development hub is located, and it is also where the Super 11 engine
is being manufactured – on the same production line as the 13-litre engine.
Scania is working hard to provide more sustainable solutions, as they know their customers have different needs depending on where they are based and how they operate. And this new engine is just the latest product to support this road to a sustainable future.
Austin Lynch, Editor, Export & Freight.
leaner and more flexible, yet it still carries the strength and reliability for which Scania is known. “It’s a smart choice for operators who need to balance performance, payload and sustainability in their daily work.”
Available in three power options –350hp (1800Nm), 390hp (2,000Nm) and 430hp (2,200Nm) – the new Super engine has been designed to perform across a wide range of applications, from urban logistics to regional haulage. The Super 11-litre features some key improvements, with up to 85% of its
with the Super 13-litre engine. Maintenance intervals are up to 30% longer than its 9-litre counterpart, which will appeal to operators, as it increases uptime and reduces overall service costs. The new engine is equipped with innovative solutions designed by Scania including its patented turbo dosing system, which reduces AdBlue consumption and enhances engine efficiency. During the visit to Sodertalje we were taken to the main testing facility, which includes a private test track – which we would experience later.
THE SUPER 11-LITRE FEATURES SOME KEY IMPROVEMENTS, WITH UP TO 85% OF ITS COMPONENTS SHARED WITH THE SUPER 13-LITRE ENGINE.
Scania developed the 5-cylinder 11-litre and the 6 cylinder 13-litre together and Scania now produces both these engines in Sodertalje on the same production line. And by sharing 85% of the components represents huge efficiencies for Scania and its highly-skilled workforce. Scania want to provide their customer with the best weight/engine combination for the loads they are transporting giving more options when it comes to weight sensitive applications.
ON THE TRACK
It would seem rude to travel all the way to Sweden, and to hear all about these ‘super’ new engines without getting behind the wheel of one or two and taking them for a drive around the Scania test track.
As always, Scania brought along a variety of trucks in various engine and cab combinations to allow not only a decent driving experience, but to allow comparison between their different products.
I got the opportunity to drive a 430R (DC11
102/430) with 430 horsepower around the twists, turns and steep inclines of the test track - and I was hugely impressed.
Complete with the latest interior including digital dash, the R cab is a very comfortable, bordering on luxurious place to be. Driving the most powerful of the Super 11-litre engines - with a fully loaded trailer – you realise this engine is well able to handle a heavy trailer. The drive is smooth and reassured, with slick gear shifting and powerful braking using the new engine brake (VVB).
For comparison sake I also drove the 420R (DC13 420HP) with the Super 13-litre engine and very similar power to the 11-litre. Driving this bigger engine didn’t feel much different to the 11-litre, and if you didn’t know you’d be doing well to tell (from the driver’s seat) these two trucks were powered by different powertrains. And in my opinion this underlines what an important new engine the 11-litre is for Scania – and more importantly its customers. “Super 11 is a versatile solution. On one hand it
covers the customer that currently uses our 9 litre platform, primarily used for the urban and light regional applications. These customers get 7% better fuel economy, alongside improvements on uptime, comfort and driveability.”
“The Super 11-litre engine represents the next generation of intelligent transport. It combines the best of Scania’s engineering with the efficiency and adaptability that today’s operators demand. “Whether in the city or out on longer
routes, this engine is built to perform – mileafter-mile.” In the UK, the new compact, lightweight and powerful new Super 11-litre engine is expected to power a range of different vehicles, from tippers, bulk transport and refuse collection trucks, to hook lifts, recovery trucks and fire engines, and general volume goods transport” continued Ayyoob Zarmehri.
What is clear from learning about, and driving, the new Super 11-litre engine is that this is a compact, powerful and refined engine built with sustainability in mind – the Super 11 is compatible with HVO across all variants giving operators a bigger choice of how to fuel their operations.
By making it lighter, they also give operators the opportunity to increase payload in weightcritical operations without compromising on power, fuel efficiency or reliability.
The Super 11-litre engine is an important new powertrain not only for Scania, but for its customers and fills a gap than many may not have realised even existed.
THE SCANIA WAY
Not only is Sodertalje in Sweden the headquarters of Scania it’s also where they produce the new Super 11-litre engine.
During our trip to Sodertalje we got a tour of the production facility where they make the Super 11-litre and Super 13-litre engines. Phones or recording equipment are not allowed in the factory but we were given an exclusive tour of the facilities and learned not only about how they make the engines today, but a bit about the history of Scania.
Using modularization Scania have a lean and flexible production system allowing them to introduce new technologies quickly into their production, giving them the ability to bring new products to market quickly.
We witnessed first-hand production of the Super 11-litre and 13-litre engines and got a rare chance to watch as the Scania skilled workforce go about their work, and saw the engine move along the busy production line
The factory is bright, clean and a hub of activity where young, highly-trained staff operate in clearly defined teams.
Staff all wear smart Scania polo shirts, with the colour scheme clearly identifying what their role in the production process is – e.g. engineer, team leader etc.
Using the latest technologies but still with a significant input from its workforce Scania ensure every engine is built to the highest of standards and, once complete the engines are transferred to another production facility to be fitted into the chassis the customer has picked.
The most striking part of the whole production process, and the facility itself is the teamwork of the staff, and how everyone is working together to produce engines worthy of the Scania name. This is the embodiment of ‘The Scania Way’ – five key philosophies that shape how Scania conducts its business.
CUSTOMER FIRST
Customers are the starting point of everything Scania do.
“We are only successful when our customers are successful, and we cooperate closely with them to understand their current and future business.
RESPECT
Scania respect each individual, their skills and opinion. They treat others with respect and expect to be treated with respect. Everyone can contribute and has the potential to grow and learn over time. Respect is the foundation of all processes, all improvements, and all value creation.
TEAM SPIRIT
‘We all win when we work as a team‘ Everyone at Scania works as one team towards a common goal, united by a joint purpose. A team includes everything from the smallest group of colleagues, through each brand, up to the TRATON Group itself and our partners.

Multiple driving offences lead to court fine
A County Tyrone operator was convicted at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £1,400 for a number of driving and vehicle related offences.
The conviction arose when Driver & Vehicle Agency Enforcement officers were conducting compliance checks in the Lurgan area when a 3-axle articulated goods vehicle, in combination with a 3-axle semi – trailer was stopped on the Birches Roundabout. An
inspection then followed at Driver & Vehicle Agency Craigavon.
An inspection was carried out on the vehicle’s digital tachograph unit which was inoperative. The driver was unable to produce an alternative record of his driver activity in lieu of the defective recording equipment.
An external power source was connected to the tachograph, on downloading of the data it was apparent the download deadline had been missed by days. The digital tachograph 2-year calibration had expired and the tyre size fitted to the drive axle did not match
Work begins on new Gasrec Biomethane Refuelling site
Gasrec has begun construction at its second large-scale, open access biomethane refuelling facility. Strategically located near the M6 and M42 the site at Hams Hall is due to open its doors in September.
The development will take place in two phases, initially providing capacity for up to 300 gas trucks to refuel on BioLNG every day. The site will be developed further as throughput increases – increasing the total capacity to 1,000 trucks daily.
Hams Hall is set to be the first of a new suite of public biomethane stations opened by Gasrec across the UK. Over the next two years, the business plans further facilities in Warrington, Avonmouth, and other locations to be announced, to complement its existing flagship site at the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT), plus the numerous other accessible Bio-LNG facilities it operates. In addition, Gasrec is looking to develop Bio-CNG
offerings where appropriate, with these developments subject to local demand.
James Westcott, Chief Commercial Officer of Gasrec, says: “This state-of-the-art facility at Hams Hall marks a step change in the direction of the Bio-LNG industry in the UK and will allow an increasing number of fleet operators to go green with confidence.”
The Hams Hall site will have seven BioLNG dispensers, with a modern fuelling system designed to allow more trucks to flow through the station at busy periods.
Gasrec currently operates 18 refuelling stations, with a mix of Bio-LNG and Bio-CNG sites, serving some of the UK’s largest fleets,
the calibrated parameters. The Semi-trailer did not hold a valid goods vehicle test certificate. The driver was unable to produce evidence of holding a driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), it was later established he never held a driver’s CPC. The vehicle was not specified on the goods vehicle operator licence.
including the likes of Asda, Tesco, John Lewis, B&Q, DHL and Ocado, as well as increasing numbers of small to medium-sized operators.
“The appetite from fleets is there, we are regularly at full capacity at DIRFT so the need for further gas infrastructure is clear,” adds Westcott.
“The opening of these new suite of largescale public access sites will accelerate the transition to a low-carbon transport sector, providing a network of refuelling facilities across the country allowing operators of all sizes to transition to these cleaner and greener fuels.”

NEW PARCEL & FREIGHT RULES IN NORTHERN IRELAND UNDER THE WINDSOR FRAMEWORK: WHAT OPERATORS NEED TO KNOW
The Windsor Framework Agreement, finalised between the UK and EU in early 2023, was designed to stabilise post-Brexit trading arrangements in Northern Ireland while safeguarding the integrity of both the UK internal market and the EU single market. After two years of preparatory work and extensive consultation, the new Parcel and Freight Rules under the Framework formally came into force in May 2025.
These rules have significant implications for logistics operators, haulage companies, and parcel delivery businesses moving goods between Great Britain (GB) and Northern Ireland (NI). Below, we set out a clear summary of the key provisions, operational changes, and compliance considerations.
1. BACKGROUND: WHY NEW RULES WERE NEEDED
Before May 2025, the Northern Ireland Protocol and subsequent grace periods created legal and practical uncertainties about moving parcels and freight. Operators often faced a patchwork of temporary easements and manual checks, especially in mixed-load consignments.
The Windsor Framework replaced the previous Protocol arrangements with a new system of green lane and red lane processes:
• Green Lane: For goods remaining in Northern Ireland and not at risk of entering the EU single market (i.e., not
crossing into the Republic of Ireland).
• Red Lane: For goods destined for onward movement into the EU.
The May 2025 Parcel and Freight Rules implement and operationalise this dual-lane approach in full.
2. SCOPE OF THE NEW RULES
The new regime applies to:
• All parcel shipments between GB and NI (B2B, B2C, C2B, C2C).
• All freight consignments entering NI ports or airports from GB.
• Certain intra-NI movements involving EU-regulated goods.
Key exemptions exist for:
• Movements entirely within Northern Ireland.
• Parcels sent from NI to GB.
• Postal shipments under Universal Postal Service thresholds.
3.
KEY OPERATIONAL FEATURES
A. Trusted Trader Scheme – The UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS)
Eligibility: Operators moving goods intended to stay in NI can apply for UKIMS authorisation.
Benefits: Access to simplified green lane procedures, including: Reduced documentary requirements. No routine customs declarations. Minimal physical checks.
B. Labelling Requirements
From May 2025:
• All retail goods shipped under the green lane must carry new “Not for EU” labels.
• This applies to individual retail packs, outer packaging, and transport documentation.
• Enforcement will be phased in gradually, but large retailers and wholesalers must already comply.
C. Parcel Operators’ Responsibilities
• Carriers are legally responsible for confirming final destination status.
• Systems must be in place to distinguish green lane and red lane parcels.
• For red lane parcels:
Standard customs declarations and EU controls apply.
Full compliance with EU customs code and VAT rules is mandatory.
D. Mixed Loads and Groupage
• New “sealed trailer” processes enable mixed loads of green and red lane consignments.
• Operators must submit pre-arrival information to HMRC and DAERA (Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs).
• Segregation of consignments is required to prevent crosscontamination of regulatory status.
4. DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND COMPLIANCE INFRASTRUCTURE
The implementation relies heavily on:
• The Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS)—enhanced to manage parcel shipments.
• Real-time parcel-level tracking data feeds for authorised carriers.
• Integration with retailer stock management systems to demonstrate NI end-use.
• A new Northern Ireland Retail Movement Scheme (NIRMS) portal for registration and labelling compliance.
Operators moving goods without appropriate declarations or labelling risk:
• Seizure or return of consignments.
• Civil penalties.
• Suspension of UKIMS authorisation.
5. ENFORCEMENT AND TRANSITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS
While the rules are now legally in force:
• A six-month soft enforcement period runs until November 2025.
• During this period, regulators will focus on education and guidance rather than penalties for first breaches.
• From November, enforcement will escalate to financial penalties and possible criminal liability for serious or repeated breaches.
6. PRACTICAL TIPS FOR FREIGHT AND PARCEL OPERATORS
1. Check Authorisations:
Ensure your business has up-to-date UKIMS authorisation and NIRMS registration.
2. Update IT Systems:
Modify booking, labelling, and tracking platforms to accommodate green lane/red lane workflows.
3. Train Staff:
Drivers, warehouse teams, and customer support must understand routing, labelling, and declaration obligations.
4. Communicate with Customers:
Retailers and commercial consignees must be aware of labelling rules and final destination declarations.
5. Review Contracts:
Update service agreements to reflect responsibilities for compliance and liability.
7. INDUSTRY REACTIONS
The freight sector has generally welcomed the clarity after years of uncertainty. However, some concerns remain:
• Smaller operators face cost and administrative burdens.
• Labelling changes require significant adaptation in supply chains.
• Integration with EU-facing IT systems has been complex.
Nonetheless, the UK government has pledged ongoing support and guidance to ease the transition.
CONCLUSION
The new Parcel and Freight Rules under the Windsor Framework represent the most significant change to GB–NI goods movements since Brexit. While they provide much-needed predictability, they also introduce detailed compliance requirements that no logistics business can ignore. Operators should act now to ensure systems, staff training, and customer communications are fully aligned. Early preparation will minimise disruption and ensure smooth crosschannel operations in the months ahead.

NEW ACTROS L PROCABIN RAISES THE BAR
BY AUSTIN LYNCH
Mercedes-Benz has always been to the fore when it comes to technology and innovation—an essential edge in today’s fiercely competitive marketplace.
When it comes to their heavy trucks, they are using the latest technology to improve efficiency, increase safety and make the job easier not only for drivers but for the operators who rely on these trucks every day.
The pinnacle of the Mercedes Benz heavy truck range is the Actros, and the German manufacturer has just launched their newest and most advanced version, the Actros L Procabin. To discover more about this new truck MBNI Truck and Van invited Export & Freight to their Mallusk dealership to drive the Actros. The test model was the Mercedes Benz Actros Pro Cabin 2553 LS , finished in the striking Crystal Green Metallic and fitted with the GigaSpace cab, which provides the ultimate in space for the truck driver. Mercedes Benz have designed and built their new Actros based on the three pillars of Comfort, Efficiency and Safety.
COMFORT
Climbing up into the cabin of the Actros you quickly realise a lot of work and attention to detail has gone into the layout and finishing of this truck.
Mercedes Benz recognise this is not just a place of work but also a home from home for the driver, and therefore have engineered the highest quality materials and finish into the Procabin.
From the sound and heat insulation, the new 150mm mattress and slatted bed base, to the introduction of the new Multimedia Cockpit Interactive 2, Mercedes Benz have placed the needs of the driver first making this a truck the driver will want to call his own.
A lower seating position and class-leading assistance systems are all designed to appeal to the driver and make their job – the cornerstone of the logistics industry – safer and more enjoyable. This cab is a really nice place to be, and everything inside here has been engineered to provide a comfortable workplace. The
driving position itself is excellent and fully adjustable seat and steering wheel allow any driver to find the perfect driving position for their day behind the wheel.
EFFICIENCY
The new aerodynamic design of the Actros L ProCabin coupled with the more fuel efficient Mercedes third generation engine (which reduces fuel consumption by up to 4%) together reduce emissions and operating costs.
The test model Actros has the 12.8 Litre, 6-cylinder in line producing 530bhp and 2,600nm of torque, which is fully HVO compatible for those operators who want to move away from diesel.
One of the standard features on the new Actros is eco driver feedback, which constantly monitors how the truck is being driven and gives the driver notifications to help save fuel and reduce wear on the vehicle.
The Procabin’s 80mm longer front end enables a completely new, even more aerodynamic design
to divert the front air flow with as little drag as possible resulting in an efficiency increase of up to 3% compared with its predecessor.
SAFETY
Mercedes Benz has put safety as their top priority and the new truck is full GSR 2 specification. Among the host of standard safety features onboard include; Active Brake Assist 6, Front Guard Assist, Active Sideguard Assist 2 and Mirror Cam.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Everything about the new Actros L ProCabin is clever, and well thought out. And, as they always say the devil is in the detail such as the key which allows you to check all the external lights on your morning walk-around check and the latest Mirror Cam technology with blind spot warning and which also allows the driver to set a digital guide to mark the end of the trailer. Behind the wheel, and I must point out I was driving the tractor unit only, this is a very easy truck to drive.
The auto gearbox is smooth and precise and the power is instant and there is plenty of it. This is the third or fourth time I have encountered mirror cams and I must admit I’m getting to like them. They never get fogged or wet and even on a dull Mallusk Monday morning the images are clear as crystal.
On my test drive of the Actros L ProCabin 2553 LS I encountered busy morning traffic and some motorway driving where I had a chance to use the adaptive cruise, which is brilliantinforming you of the speed of vehicles in front and then slowing down when necessary.
Another neat trick up the Actros sleeve is how it approaches a roundabout. When cruise control is active it slows down on the approach (provided you stay off the pedals) and if nothing is coming will navigate the roundabout at an appropriate speed and then accelerate back up
to cruising speed once clear of the roundabout with the need for touching the pedals.
Other stand out features that make this truck so easy to drive, and live with include the controls on the multi-function steering wheel – the one at your right thumb controls your instrument cluster while the left thumb controls the multimedia and heating and cooling system.
And for drivers living with the Actros the Mirror Cam switch on the bed is genius –allowing the driver to turn on his mirrors to check outside, if for instance they hear something during the night, or while resting.
To say there are too many other features to mention, both for safety and driver comfort is putting it mildly but everything is designed and laid out so well that it all just works so well as a package.
With the new Actros L ProCabin Mercedes Benz has succeeded in making a truck that is safer (both for the driver and for pedestrians and other road users) than anything they have produced before, more efficient and more comfortable.
The balance with producing any new truck must be a truck that appeals to the driver, but is also appealing to the operator and with the new Actros I think they have managed to cater for both.

GREENER ROADS AHEAD: EMBRACING SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability has become one of the defining issues facing the UK’s road transport sector. As pressure mounts to cut emissions, reduce environmental impact and meet ambitious net zero targets, the trucking industry is finding itself at the centre of a complex – and urgent – transformation.
From low-emission zones and ESG reporting requirements to rising fuel costs and customer demand for greener supply chains, hauliers are under increasing pressure to adapt while maintaining reliability and efficiency.
Operators are exploring a range of carbon-cutting solutions –from transitioning to batteryelectric and hydrogen trucks to investing in smarter logistics,
improved aerodynamics and driver behaviour monitoring.
One particularly fast-growing area of interest is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) – a renewable diesel alternative that offers significant carbon savings without the need for new vehicles or infrastructure.
HVO is gaining traction as a practical, drop-in solution for fleets looking to decarbonise quickly. Made from waste fats and vegetable oils, it can
reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. Crucially, it can be used in most modern diesel engines without modification, making it a cost-effective stepping stone towards net zero, especially for hauliers operating in areas not yet suitable for electrification. This Sustainability feature dives into the practicalities and potential of HVO as part of Northern Ireland’s
transport industry’s wider sustainability shift.
In addition to featuring businesses that supply this cleaner, greener fuel we also look at what other options are available to transport companies aiming to make their operations more sustainable going forward.
The road to sustainability in heavy goods transport is long and complex – and there’s no single solution.
As pressure builds to act, this feature offers insights and expert perspectives to help fleets navigate the road ahead – cleaner, smarter and more sustainable.
KEEPING YOUR TYRES IN CHECK
TPMS VS. AIRSAVE
With an ADAC-reported figure of over 65% of truck breakdowns caused by tyre punctures, tyre health is vital to the efficiency of commercial fleet operations.
Factors like road conditions, load weights, and varying temperatures can lead to pressure variations, which increase fuel consumption, excessive tyre wear, and unexpected downtime. In the commercial vehicle industry, investing in a tyre pressure management system can help reduce operating costs and deliver long-term savings.
BPW understand the challenges fleet operators face and offers two solutions: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and BPW AirSave (Tyre Pressure Refill System - TPRS). Both are tyre pressure management systems, however, they operate differently. Understanding how each system works is key and can help operators decide which system to use.
BPW TPMS – REAL-TIME MONITORING FOR PROACTIVE FLEET MANAGEMENT
BPW TPMS provides the user with real-time insights into a vehicle’s tyre pressure and temperature.
Compliant with ECE 141 regulations, the system transmits tyre pressure deviations directly to the truck via the Electronic Braking System (EBS), allowing drivers to receive immediate alerts and minimise the risk of costly issues such as tyre blowouts. Designed to fit most wheel sizes and with a lifespan of up to seven years, the system provides lasting value and reliability. By linking TPMS data with BPW idem Telematics, users can also transmit tyre information to a control centre for further processing. The system’s smart TPMS functionality enables email notifications to be sent to fleet managers or tyre service providers. Additionally, classic telematics features such as alarms, reports, and maintenance calendars enhance fleet management efficiency and reliability.
BPW idem Telematics Gateway Basic can support up to 24 individual tyre sensors, which can be mounted on either the wheel rim or the tyre valve. These sensors transmit tyre pressure data to a receiver unit with an accuracy of up to +/0.3 bar. BPW TPMS can be scaled up further to include 48 sensors with the Gateway Pro option.
BPW
AIRSAVE – AUTOMATED INFLATION FOR REDUCED MAINTENANCE:
Progressing from TPMS, BPW AirSave goes a step further by not only continuously monitoring tyre pressure but also regulating it through an integrated inflation system.
Using the trailer’s existing pneumatics, AirSave employs an automatic booster pump to maintain the pre-set tyre pressure.
The air is then directed through the axle beam to the wheel end tyre valve. In the event of pressure deviation, AirSave activates at just +/- 0.2 bar, offering greater reliability compared to standard systems. In the event of a permanent pressure loss, BPW AirSave alerts the driver with a constant, visible warning light in the cab, indicating that a drop in tyre pressure has been detected, and the vehicle must stop when it is safe to do so. Maintaining optimal tyre pressure is crucial not only for safety but also for fuel efficiency and emissions reduction. According to BPW, by regulating tyre pressure AirSave can save 250 litres of fuel, equating to 655 kilograms in CO2 emissions per year, (based on a tri-axle trailer with a mileage of 120,000 kilometres per annum).
DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY – ACCESS REAL-TIME DATA ANYWHERE
Both TPMS and AirSave are designed to detect potential tyre failures before they escalate, allowing operators to address potential braking problems long before scheduled maintenance. With the integrated Cargofleet 3 telematics platform or the Driver App, drivers and fleet operators can gain valuable real-time data and insights from anywhere. This digital connectivity improves informed decision-making, enhancing
fleet management efficiency and helping to prevent costly downtime.
WHICH SYSTEM IS RIGHT FOR YOUR FLEET?
Choosing between TPMS and AirSave will depend on fleet priorities. TPMS provides realtime data and allows for proactive action. AirSave is a fully automated system that continuously adjusts tyre pressure, making it ideal for fleets focused on minimising unplanned disruptions and breakdowns. Both systems offer benefits such as reduced tyre wear, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced safety.
BPW – YOUR TRUSTED PARTNER FOR FLEET OPTIMISATION
At BPW, we understand that fleet operators need more than just high-quality components - they need smart solutions that enhance efficiency and reduce costs. Whether you choose TPMS or AirSave, our tyre pressure management systems deliver optimal performance, minimal downtime, and substantial long-term savings. For advice on the right solution for your fleet, contact BPW. With BPW, you’re not just investing in tyre pressure management - you’re investing in the future success of your fleet.
SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
REVOLUTIONISING ELECTRIC MOBILITY
BPW epower redefines refrigerated trailers as the ultimate smart solution.
In the ever-evolving landscape of refrigerated transport, where energy conservation and ecofriendly options are a necessity, BPW ePower emerges as a symbol of innovation and sustainability. Unlike other systems that constantly engage the generator, contributing to increased emissions and fuel consumption, BPW ePower stands out as a smart solution designed to operate intelligently, optimising energy usage and minimising environmental impact.
A PIONEERING PARTNERSHIP FOR A GREENER FUTURE
BPW and Thermo King, two leading companies at the forefront of transitioning technology in the industry, proudly announced their collaborative effort to shape the future of sustainable and efficientclimate-neutral refrigerated transport. More than just an innovative stride, this partnership offers the perfect alliance.
A TECHNOLOGICAL MARVEL - BPW EPOWER
The BPW ePower is a cutting-edge generator axle designed to propel
the transportation industry into a greener future. With its dual generators, ePower doubles power output and reliability. However, what truly sets ePower apart is its intelligent energy management system, ensuring that the cooling system always has access to sufficient battery reserves without unnecessary engagement, thereby minimising fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
ePower, developed by engineers at BPW, is meticulously designed to adhere to automotive safety standards. The system recovers energy when the trailer is moving, enabling a carbon-neutral and quiet supply of power to refrigeration units for temperature-controlled transportation. Depending on the usage and equipment, this innovative solution not only presents the opportunity to save up to 4,000 litres of fuel annually per trailer, but also has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 10 tonnes per year per trailer.
A SMART SOLUTION IN ACTION
Unlike traditional systems that remain engaged throughout the journey, BPW ePower does not engage or carry current until the vehicle reaches 15 KmH. Operating similarly to a bike dynamo, ePower efficiently converts wheel rotation into
energy and temporarily stores it in a backup battery before feeding it into the system as needed.
The battery pack has two options: a Standard (19 KW) or an Extended (38 KW) Autonomy Pack. These were created with the help of telematics experts to ensure that drivers and fleet managers can get the best fit for their fleet. This way the kinetic energy typically lost by a trailer during transit is recycled efficiently.
REAL-TIME INTERACTION
Equipped with intelligent smart power management, which controls the engagement and disengagement of the generators, ePower additionally reduces resistance on the tractor unit and offers real-time battery charge status to both the driver and fleet manager.
The settings for the system can be changed on demand via the BPW idem telematics Cargofleet portal, as well as Thermo King’s TracKing web portal and the TK Reefer app.
THE FOUR-MODE ADVANTAGE
Equipped with four generator modes, BPW ePower offers unparalleled versatility tailored to various driving situations. Different operating modes make
sure that energy is managed intelligently and, therefore, that the system in question is ideally supplied with electricity as needed – even during longer journeys or in congested traffic conditions.
1) ACTIVE: The generator produces electrical energy depending on the power demand and driving situation.
2) ACTIVE FAST CHARGE:
Continuously produces electrical energy with full power until the battery is charged.
3) RECUPERATION-ONLY:
The axle produces electrical energy by recuperation only (i.e., while braking); this avoids additional fuel consumption of the vehicle.
4) PASSIVE: The axle generator will not produce electrical energy and remains on standby.
A PLEDGE FOR THE FUTURE
In an era when climate change and environmental concerns are at the forefront of global challenges, BPW and Thermo King are taking a proactive approach. They recognise that there is a perpetual urgency when it comes to developing new sustainable products.
Partnering with industry experts is speeding up its progress in bringing new solutions to the refrigeration industry and instigating change. BPW are committed to sustainability, and this partnership demonstrates their dedication to preserving the environment and supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future.
NEW PANDA CNG STATION OPENED BY MINISTER O’BRIEN
Panda’s new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Cappagh, Dublin, developed in partnership with Gas Networks Ireland, was officially opened in June by Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD. This opening brings the number of CNG stations in Ireland to 12.
The opening also marked the official launch of the GRAZE (Green Renewable Agricultural Zero Emissions) Vehicle Grant Scheme – a government-funded initiative administered by Gas Networks Ireland to support the transition of Ireland’s heavy goods vehicle (HGV) fleet to CNG - a cleaner, more sustainable fuel alternative to diesel.
Speaking at the event, Minister O’Brien said: “Ireland’s transport sector is a cornerstone of our economy and we are committed to ensuring that the transition to decarbonisation is both effective and supportive. While passenger cars are increasingly shifting to electric, the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) sector requires alternative low emission fuels where electrification
is not a viable solution.
“Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and renewable biomethane (BioCNG) offer a practical and scalable pathway to reducing emissions in this space. We now have more than 170 gaspowered HGVs on Irish roads, with demand rising— gas usage by HGVs increased by over 90 per cent in the past year alone.
“This growth signals a clear shift towards cleaner freight transport, and I warmly welcome the increasing demand, the infrastructure investment and the launch of the CNG GRAZE grant scheme, which will support more businesses in making the switch.”
The new CNG station at Cappagh is the 12th in Ireland
and was developed through a collaboration between Panda and Gas Networks Ireland. It is Panda’s second public station in Dublin, following the opening of its Ballymount site earlier this year.
The GRAZE €750,000 grant scheme offers significant financial support to fleet operators switching to gas powered HGVs and will provide up to €10,000 per vehicle, covering up to 40% of the cost difference between a diesel and a gas fuelled commercial HGV. A total of 75 grants will be available under the first phase of the scheme.
Gas Networks Ireland’s Director of Customer and Business Development, David Kelly said: “CNG is a key enabler of more sustainable supply chains, and
the first step towards net zero commercial transport in Ireland.
The CNG GRAZE grant scheme is a practical and targeted measure that supports businesses in making the switch to lower emission commercial vehicles. It’s a strong example of how government and industry can work together to accelerate climate action.
“We’ve partnered with some of the country’s leading forecourt operators and haulage companies to make low carbon gas a viable, accessible fuel alternative for Irish transport operators, with strategic locations across Dublin, Cavan, Limerick and Tipperary.
Applications and further details, including terms and conditions, will be available at www. gasnetworks.ie/grazefund

support to Depot 89, Down logistics Dpd on sourcing and service of new Electric Vans (EV).
We at Dpd are mindful of and determined to play our part in saving our Planet. Sustainability is one of our key objectives. Therefore we have decided to change our fleet of vans to electric.
After working with several suppliers of electric vans, we were introduced to Niall from Radius by a business colleague in dpd. This was the beginning of a very successful, strong and stress-free partnership in our journey to a
sustainable clean and green fleet of vans
Radius excelled in their flexible approach to the provision of vans often at very short notice.
Their contract with us includes maintenance including tyres, and replacement of vehicles, again often at very short notice. This is very comforting to both management and delivery drivers.
We have no hesitation in recommending Radius vehicle solution to any business that are interested in affordability and excellent customer service.
We look forward to a continued working relationship with Radius and Niall Clarke to our mutual future success.

SCOTTS FUELS HAVE YOU COVERED FOR ALL YOUR HVO, FUEL, LUBRICANTS & ADBLUE NEEDS…
For over 70 years Scotts Fuels, a family owned and operated business, has been supplying top quality fuels, value for money and a service you can trust.
Scotts Fuels has a longstanding presence in the local oil industry being a company not only well known for its honesty and trustworthiness but also for quality of both products and services.
Scotts Fuels offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for all your fuels, HVO, lubricants, Adblue and Grease needs throughout Northern Ireland. They are ISO 9001 certified to ensure the quality of both products and systems bringing peace of mind to their customers. And with a modern fleet of company owned Euro 6 vehicles with weights and measures approved and sealed meters they ensure the customer gets exactly what they have ordered.
“We can offer you a complete package of premium quality fuels, HVO, lubricants, greases and Adblue all under the one account at competitive prices. With dedicated account managers to attend to your needs” said Robert Scott, Director Scotts Fuels.
“We deliver domestic, commercial, Industrial, Agricultural & Marine deliveries of up to 35,000 litres throughout Northern Ireland daily.
“Our Lubricants, Grease & Adblue business is one of the largest in Ireland supplying products throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland. We supply Bulk and Packaged products to the Agricultural, Industrial, Automotive, Power, Maine and Metal working sectors to mention a few.
HVO
For businesses that are looking for a more sustainable fuel that will instantly reduce emissions by up to 92%, Scotts Fuels stock and supply HVO throughout NI Daily at competitive pricing from small deliveries up to 35,000L they have you covered.
One of the biggest advantages of HVO is the instant significant reduction in life-cycle GHG emissions it delivers. HVO is a
paraffinic fuel meeting EN15940
Standard for paraffinic fuels, with near-zero sulphur and very low aromatics content. Compared to standard diesel, it produces fewer regulated emissions of toxic hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), all of which are harmful to human health and the environment. By transitioning to HVO, fleets can cut fuel-related emissions (well to wheel) from operations by up to 92% compared to standard diesel, helping to lower their carbon footprint with immediate effect.
A particularly attractive feature of HVO is its drop-in capabilities. It can be used in vehicles designed for standard diesel, without any changes to the engine. As capital expenditure is not required, HVO offers a viable and accessible route towards decarbonisation, without disruption or delay. The benefits of HVO extend
beyond sustainability. Due to its molecular structure, it offers low temperature performance, with a low operating temperature of -30 degrees. It also has lower filter blocking tendency and improved combustion over some alternatives. “HVO and standard diesel are interchangeable. Both are energydense fuels that can be used to power heavy machinery, trucks, Generators & marine vessels. We can supply tanks with dispensing equipment if needed or you can use your current tanks leading to no financial impact on your business
“We store and deliver HVO daily throughout Northern Ireland from small amounts to 35,000 litre loads, we have you covered when you need it.”
FUELING A CLEANER FUTURE FOR NORTHERN IRELAND
Reliable, low-emission fuel solutions that help your business go greener - without slowing down.
Trusted by businesses across Northern Ireland, Scotts Fuels is delivering on the promise of cleaner energy- today.
From hauliers and agri-contractors to construction and commercial fleets, we supply high-quality fuels, including HVO Renewable Diesel, that support your journey to lower emissions and increased efficiency.
• Cut carbon emissions by up to 90%
• No engine modifications required – HVO is a drop-in solution
SUN SHINES ON STONELEIGH FOR ROAD TRANSPORT EXPO (RTX) 2025
On Tuesday morning (24th June) the gates of Stoneleigh Park opened and Road Transport Expo (RTX) 2025 was officially up and running, the fourth year of the show and the biggest one yet.
In addition to the large number of stands displaying everything from trucks and trailers to telematics and tyres those who made it to the first morning of the show had the chance to witness a number of manufacturer launches and reveals.
The first launch of RTX ‘25 was at the Hiab outside stand where the truck-mounted crane manufacturer revealed a number of new products including their new Multilift Futura Skiploader. Next, on another outside stand just down from HIAB, Iveco unveiled a ‘Force of Nature’ special S-Way.
The launch of the IVECO S-Way 500 CNG 6x2 in partnership with Astra Vehicle Technologies delivered a vehicle capable of 44 tonnes GVW with CO2 reductions of up to 95% versus an equivalent diesel model - a landmark moment for CNG.
This bespoke IVECO CNG truck highlights how this new 6x2 is a true ‘force of nature’. The aerodynamic bodywork of this IVECO S-Way 500 CNG plays host to an unapologetic
hand-painted design. Beneath the vivid green splashes and glossy black exterior beats is the cutting-edge xCursor 13 engine producing an unrivalled 500hp.
Its eight CNG tanks are positioned within the chassis to allow for maximum trailer lengths while storing enough biomethane to cover in excess of 500km – something alluded to via its eye-catching personalised registration – X8 CNG.
The next major launch event on Tuesday morning was at the DAF stand.
DAF Trucks celebrated an extraordinary milestone at RTX ’25 with the unveiling of a striking new flagship ‘UK30 Special Edition’ XG+ 530 model, marking 30 years as the UK’s number one truck brand. Finished in exclusive metallic green paint and adorned with Union Flag accents, the limited-run was revealed on the opening day of the show on DAF’s outdoor stand.
The anniversary edition truck also pays homage to DAF’s enduring legacy of manufacturing in the UK, where DAF vehicles for the domestic market, including the UK30 Special Edition
truck, are built at Leyland Trucks in Lancashire. Reflecting this proud heritage, the upper bunk in the cab features a bold Union Flag graphic, while inside features premium touches including unique Xtra leather air seats and upper bunk. Only 30 of these special XG+ trucks will be made.
And before the morning was over Scania had a world reveal of their Super 11 litre engine on their indoor stand.
Built on Scania’s most advanced powertrain platform, the Super 11-litre engine introduces state-of-the-art engineering for superior performance and precision.
Scania state the new engine provides up to 7% lower fuel consumption compared to the previous Scania 9-litre engine; it produces higher torque at lower revs enhances control, responsiveness, and engine longevity. And its optimised weight and compact design increase payload capacity without compromise.
On their stand, MAN showcased a range of vehicles from the 3.5 tonne TGE, widely known as the truck among vans, through to the range-
topping TGX tractor unit, a vehicle that redefines the standards in the commercial vehicle industry.
And, for the first time on British soil MAN unveiled two new ground-breaking MAN models, the all-electric eTGS rigid in both 4x2 (20 tonne GVW) and 6x2 (28 tonne GVW) configurations.
Over at Renault Truck, they showcased its future-focused line-up with the new Model Year 2025 taking centre stage on Stand B4, underlining the brand’s commitment to enhanced productivity, fuel efficiency and safety.
Visitors to their stand got a look at the latest evolution of the Renault Trucks T, redesigned for Model Year 2025. On display was a stunning 44 tonne T480 6x2 resplendent in distinctive orange paintwork, featuring Turbo Compound technology that offers up to 10% fuel savings and corresponding CO2 reductions.
In prime position on the way into the main hall at Stoneleigh Volvo Trucks had an impressive line-up of trucks, all in the distinctive blue and yellow of their native Sweden. And on their indoor stand, in pride of place was the FH16 780 XXL in striking orange.
In addition to all the stands, the ‘Ride and Drive’ event was very busy as was the Knowledge Zone where a number of presentations and discussions took place through the Show.
During a busy afternoon, Show Director Vic Bunby made the announcement that in 2026 they will be running RTX in Northern Ireland at Eikon Exhibition Centre, to be followed in 2027 by RTX Ireland in Dublin.
The weather may have started off dull but by mid-morning the sun had come out and sun cream and water were what the exhibitors and visitors to the show were looking forand possibly an ice-cream or even a hat! Exhibitors reported a steady number of visitors throughout Tuesday with bigger crowds attending on Wednesday and Thursday. And as the gates closed on Thursday afternoon, the show that prides itself on being ‘All About the Truck’ was once again hailed a success.
Next up is RTX Scotland in November, 2025 before RTX catches the ferry across the Irish Sea in Spring 2026.

RTX COMING TO IRELAND IN 2026 AND 2027
Road Transport Expo (RTX) is coming to Ireland over the next two years
The announcement was made by RTX Director Vic Bunby on the first day of this year’s RTX at Stoneleigh.
“As the organisers of Road Transport Expo (RTX) and RTX Scotland, we are thrilled to expand our reach into Ireland with two brand new, industryfocused events: RTX Northern Ireland and RTX Ireland.
“These events will bring our unique ‘all about the truck’ formula to Ireland, specifically tailored to meet the needs of the transport industry in both the north and south of the island” said Vic Bunby.
Talking about why Ireland, Mr Bunby said Ireland’s road transport and haulage industry is a dynamic and evolving market with unique challenges and opportunities.
RTX Northern Ireland and RTX Ireland will provide a dedicated platform where professionals can connect, innovate and grow.
“To maximize impact, we’ve partnered with Export & Freight and Fleet Transport magazines –two leading voices in the transport
media – to create a platform where Ireland’s HGV operators, fleet managers and transport professionals can come together to share insights and drive progress.”
Helen Beggs, Chief Operating Officer, Export & Freight commented, “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering on this exciting new chapter for the Northern Ireland road haulage industry.
“At Export & Freight we’ve proudly championed the sector across
Northern Ireland for decades, and we see RTX Northern Ireland as a much-needed platform to celebrate innovation, strengthen industry connections, and address the challenges facing operators today. This event is a fantastic opportunity to bring the industry together and we’re thrilled to be part of it from the very beginning.
Echoing Helen’s comments, Jarlath Sweeney, Group Editor/Director Fleet Transport Publications Ireland said, “Fleet Transport is proud
to support the launch of RTX Northern Ireland and RTX Ireland – two events that will bring a fresh, focused approach to the Irish road transport sector.”
What to expect at RTX Northern Ireland, which will be held at Eikon Exhibition Centre.

SUN SHINES (A BIT) ON 12th ANNUAL EXPORT & FREIGHT GOLF MASTERS
All roads lead to the Fermanagh Lakelands for a couple of days of golf and craic.
In the local transport and logistics sector, don’t plan any big meetings for the first week of June because it will most definitely clash with the Export & Freight Golf Masters at Lough Erne. For over a decade now, golfers, and non-golfers alike have been descending on the Lough Erne Golf Resort outside Enniskillen in early June for what is now a permanent fixture in the calendar of many. And the trick is to get in early as this popular event sells out quickly, and this is one you don’t want to miss.
From early morning on the Wednesday, trucks and trailers from event sponsors start to arrive and are strategically parked up outside the
clubhouse, with guests arriving from around lunchtime to get ‘into the swing of things’ and perhaps squeeze in a sneaky practice round ahead of the main competition on Thursday. This year, as always, the course was in spectacular shape and the hotel was looking amazing having recently undergone a major refurbishment.
Wednesday night at the Export & Freight Golf Masters is Sponsors Night – a favorite of many held down at the Golf Academy.
Hosted by resident professional Damian Mooney, and with compere for the evening Adrian Logan on the microphone, with sidekick Albert Kirk on the camera, this is always an entertaining few hours with a bit of golf thrown in. After a few drinks, and a delicious buffet its back up to the hotel for a nightcap or two
before an early start for many on Thursday. The phrase ‘Four Seasons in One Day’ was a perfect way to describe Thursday, starting dull with a few heavy showers but as the day went on the sun appeared and those of us in Fermanagh were treated to a perfect summers evening. Golfers were on the first tee from just after eight while those on the non-golfing event had a more civilized start time, meeting up about 9.30am.
This year the non-golfing event first went to Tully Mill in Florencecourt for some wine tasting before heading into Enniskillen for the ‘Enniskillen Taste Experience’ with host Mark Edwards.
By 5.00pm the last golfers were approaching the end of their rounds, and the nongolfers accompanied by Party Marty, Golda and Catherine were arriving back from their food tour of Fermanagh.
After everyone had the chance to get changed, and possibly grab 40 winks, it was down to the Ballroom for the Gala dinner and presentation of prizes. And a huge £3000 was raised for the evening’s charity partner, Irish Pilgrimage Trust (now the Rise and Shine Trust). Thank you to all who contributed for their generosity. As always this event simply wouldn’t work without the hard working staff of the Lough Erne Resort, so a huge thanks to them. And also to Barry, Roy, Darren and the entire team at the Golf Club for looking after all the golfers, the scores and everything golf related. It is thanks to them that the event runs so smoothly, and why are golfers return to this event year after year. And we can’t forget the ‘Tik-Tok’ girls, Charlotte and Annie from the North-West News Group, who went around the course and talked to all the sponsors at the holes, and brought a smile to all they met.
See you all next year.

GATEWAYS TO GLOBAL TRADE: THE VITAL ROLE OF PORTS AND CUSTOMS EXPERTS
In today’s fast-moving global economy, the ability to move goods efficiently across borders is more critical than ever. Behind every successful import or export lies a finely tuned network of ports, customs agents, and freight forwarders—each playing a pivotal role in keeping international trade flowing smoothly. As supply chains grow more complex and regulatory landscapes shift, these unsung heroes of logistics are stepping up to ensure compliance, minimise delays, and keep cargo moving.
UK ports—both major hubs and smaller regional terminals—are at the heart of this ecosystem, acting as crucial gateways for goods entering and leaving the country. Yet, the speed and success of port operations increasingly depend on collaboration with customs clearance professionals and freight forwarders who understand the intricacies of post-Brexit documentation, customs codes, and everevolving international requirements.
Customs agents, often working behind the scenes, play an essential role in ensuring
consignments are correctly declared, duties are paid, and all necessary paperwork is in order. Freight forwarders, meanwhile, go beyond transport logistics, offering end-to-end coordination, multi-modal planning, and the kind of problem-solving expertise that only experience brings. With rising pressures around sustainability, digitalisation, and border security, the work of these professionals is more important—and more visible—than ever.
In this feature we focus not only on some of the major ports handling goods into and
out of this island but we also shine a light on those providing services in the background to make the flow of goods as smooth as possible. From digital customs platforms and smart port infrastructure to the vital role of agents in avoiding costly delays, we’ll look at how the industry is adapting— and thriving—amid constant change.
As international trade becomes increasingly dynamic, one thing remains clear: without the seamless integration of ports, customs agents, and freight forwarders, global commerce would grind to a halt.

CLDN unveil their latest vessel in Liverpool
BY SCOTT MACKEY
CLdN recently unveiled one of their H5 vessels, the Seraphine at Liverpool Cruise Terminal.
Seraphine is part of CLdN’s advanced fleet of larger vessels designed to carry more cargo while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Delivered in 2022, the vessel has capacity for 5,000 lane metres of freight, and it operates to a CII A rating, which places the vessel among the most efficient ships in the world. Seraphine can also be powered by LNG or biomethane.
Following a passage from Zeebrugge to Dublin, the vessel repositioned to Liverpool for the ceremony which was attended by more than 250 guests, including representatives from CLdN, Peel Ports, Hyundai Mipo Shipyard, key customers, and other stakeholders.
David Huck, COO of Peel Ports Group and Florent Maes, CEO of CLdN, showcased the recent refurbishment of the Brocklebank Terminal which handles more than 200,000 units of cargo each year.
This unveiling, and choosing Liverpool for
the ceremony, highlights CLdN’s ongoing partnership with Peel Ports strengthening the Port of Liverpool’s position as a key logistics hub, and creating jobs.
Larger vessels have already been deployed on the key Liverpool-Dublin link since the
takeover of Seatruck in 2022, and the intention was announced to increase the size of ships on the route by using vessels such as Seraphine in the future. Such vessels would use a newly constructed river berth which, it was stated, will be in place before 2030.
Port of Waterford named Logistics & Supply Chain Company of the Year
Port of Waterford has been named Logistics & Supply Chain Company of the Year at the 2025 Chambers Ireland Recognition Awards. This honour comes as the port marks an extraordinary milestone: its 1111th anniversary as Ireland’s oldest port.
Founded by the Vikings in 914 AD, Port of Waterford has grown from its origins as a trading post to become a vital logistics hub serving Ireland’s economy. For over a millennium, the port has connected Irish producers to global markets, supported local industry, and provided critical supply chain solutions for sectors ranging from agriculture to construction and renewable energy. Today, the port plays a pivotal role in the South East’s thriving agricultural sector. It handles the import of over one million tonnes of bulk ingredients each year and enables the export of premium dairy products, including butter and cheese, which depart twice weekly for Rotterdam. In addition to its agricultural impact, the port is integral to Ireland’s construction and infrastructure sectors, managing significant volumes of raw materials for cement production and steel for major building projects.
Innovation has been central to the port’s success throughout its history. A pioneer of containerisation in the 1960s, Port of Waterford’s container terminal remains a vital link in Ireland’s supply chain. Continuous investment has secured direct motorway access via the M9
and M11 and made it the only Irish port with rail connectivity directly into its facilities.
Looking ahead, Port of Waterford is positioning itself as a key player in Ireland’s transition to green energy. Having already supported
the import of onshore wind farm components for over a decade, the port is now preparing to become a critical hub for offshore wind construction and maintenance. It is currently involved in a major maintenance project at Ireland’s only offshore wind farm, the Arklow Bank, demonstrating its readiness to support the nation’s renewable ambitions.
David Sinnott, CEO of Port of Waterford, said: “Being named Logistics & Supply Chain Company of the Year is a tremendous recognition of the hard work, dedication and innovation shown by everyone across our team. It is also a reflection of the trust our customers and partners place in us every day. As we celebrate 1111 years of trade, we are more committed than ever to supporting Ireland’s economy and driving a sustainable future for our region and our country.”
Winning Logistics & Supply Chain Company of the Year is a testament to the commitment of the port’s teams, partners, and the many businesses it serves across the South East and beyond. As it enters its second millennium, Port of Waterford remains dedicated to preserving its remarkable heritage while shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for the region and Ireland as a whole.

LARNE PORT – THE GATEWAY TO GREAT BRITAIN
Larne Port continues to be the gateway of choice for many passengers and freight companies transporting goods between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
Located just 30 minutes from Belfast, and just two and a half hours from Dublin the Port handles in the region of a quarter of a million commercial vehicles each year
The Port’s most regularly visiting ships are P&Os two powerful, and reliable RoPax ferries – the European Highlander, and the European Causeway - which operate across the North Channel every day of the week. And with the Larne to Cairnryan route being the shortest crossing to GB, at just two hours, it is obvious why Larne continues to be popular with both freight and passengers alike. The combination of the shortest crossing, and fast loading and discharge from these ‘drive through’ ships, lorry drivers spend less time onboard getting themselves and their freight back on the road quicker.
By offering great value, convenient online booking and a great selection of sailing times it’s not hard to see why P&O maintain this vital trade route between Northern Ireland and Great Britain
“We generally have six ferry arrivals and departures per day, which rises to seven crossings per day in the summer months“ explains Thomas McKay, Harbour Master - Larne & Cairnryan.
The two P&O RoPax Ferries cater for both passengers and freight with the capacity to carry up to 440 passengers per sailing in addition to significant volumes of freight traffic.”
Currently, these vessels carry around 15 per cent of the goods coming in and out of Northern
Ireland, including vital medicines and fresh food.
With approximately 40 acres of extensive trailer vehicle parking, a trained workforce and a fleet of modern tugmasters, the port is fully equipped to handle unaccompanied traffic as well as driver accompanied vehicles.
Fast, efficient check-in facilities and modern freight driver facilities make Larne Port a popular choice with hauliers and drivers.
Having deep water, a range of quays and generous land available, the port can also cater for other vessels. “In the past year, there has been a growing interest from the renewables industry, specifically wind farms, and we have handled a number of vessels with cargoes associated with this sector,” continued Harbour Master Mr McKay
The port is fast becoming an important hub for the import of wind farm components and also for ships undertaking maintenance in the many off-shore wind farms in the Irish Sea.”

STENA FUTURA SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES SEA TRIALS
Stena Line has announced that Stena Futura, the first of its new hybrid ferries destined for the Irish Sea, has successfully completed its sea trials in China.
The completion of the sea trials is a significant milestone in the build Stena Futura and the vessel is on schedule to enter service on the Belfast-Heysham route in late Summer. Sea trials are designed to test the vessel at sea to demonstrate the proper function of the ship to ensure that all systems are fully operational and in line with agreed specifications. The tests include areas such as engine performance and endurance, fuel consumption, navigation and radio equipment, emergency systems, speed
tests, maneuverability, engine and thruster tests as well as safety tests.
Once operational, Stena Futura and sister ship Stena Connecta will enhance freight capacity by 40% on the Belfast-Heysham route in response to an increase in customer demand for services between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
The two hybrid vessels will play a key role in Stena Line’s sustainability journey. They will be enhanced with built in technologies that will be able
to utilise both battery propulsion and shore power, when available.
Niclas Martensson, CEO of Stena Line said: “It is with great excitement that we announce that Stena Futura has successfully completed its sea trials.
The Irish Sea region continues to be a booming market for Stena Line, and the significant boost these ships will provide to our freight capacity on the popular Belfast – Hesham route will be welcomed by the market.
“These vessels represent a crucial step in our broader sustainability journey.
By integrating battery propulsion and shore power capabilities, we are making significant strides towards our goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, reinforcing Stena Line’s position as a leader in sustainable shipping.”
STENA LINE ANNOUNCES PLANS TO WITHDRAW ITS ROSSLARECHERBOURG SERVICE
Following a strategic route review, Stena Line has announced that from 30 September 2025, the ferry operator intends to withdraw its existing three-day Rosslare - Cherbourg service. The last sailing will depart Cherbourg on 29 September, arriving in Rosslare on 30 September.
These plans have been developed after an extensive review with the intention of strengthening the company’s investment in the Irish Sea, whilst delivering the most efficient use of the company’s resources.
Johan Edelman, Trade Director said, “Our priority is, as always, the care of our people and customers. We’ve already met with our colleagues and over this period of consultation we will be working with any individual affected to consider all options, including redeployment opportunities. As we work through this change we will continue to support our colleagues at every stage.
“Our customer service team will be helping customers who have booked travel after September to keep any
inconvenience to a minimum.
“Stena Line will continue to strengthen its Irish Sea network. We have recently announced investments of almost £40 million in our Liverpool and Belfast terminals, as well as the upgrading of the Fishguard port infrastructure. We will also be increasing capacity across the Irish Sea with two new freight vessels planned for the Belfast – Heysham route and an additional freight vessel for the Dublin – Liverpool route.
“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our employees, customers and delivery partners over the past 11 years. Our Rosslare - Cherbourg service is one that we will always be proud of, and we will continue to deliver the same high-quality service over the coming months.”
Van market shrinks every month in first half of 2025
New light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations shrank by just over 12% (to 156,048 units) in the first half of 2025, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
With a -14.8% drop in June, the market declined for the seventh consecutive month, rounding off the worst opening halfyear performance since 2022 amid a tough economic environment and weak business confidence to invest in fleet renewal.
Year-to-date performance was led by declining demand for the largest vans (by -14.8% with 99,790 registered), as well as deliveries of medium sized vans, down -20.9% to 26,408 units.
Sales of 4x4s also fell, by -6.0% to 4,041 units. However, there was growth in demand for small vans, up 30.7%, but this could not soften the overall market decline as a lower volume segment.
Pick-ups
There was also robust uptake of new pickups in the half-year period, up 10.0% to 20,902 units, however, that obscures two consecutive months of decline following April’s introduction of new fiscal measures
to treat double cabs as cars for benefit in kind and capital allowance purposes.
The change in treatment is putting additional costs on key business sectors, constraining new orders of the zero and lower emission models which are entering the market, and keeping more polluting vehicles on the road for longer.
Manufacturers continue to invest massively in cutting-edge zero emission LCVs and there are now almost 40 different battery electric van (BEV) models to choose from –up from 28 in the first half of last year.
Demand for BEVs
The market is responding, with BEV demand up 52.8% and 13,512 units registered in 2025,4 boosted by a 97.0% jump in deliveries in June. In the year to date, new BEV purchases remain at just 8.6% of the overall market, however, little more than half the 16% share mandated by government for 2025 with substantial ground to make up in the second half of the year – a gap
which government must help to plug.
The Plug-in Van Grant remains a lifeline for industry, so we await further details of the ongoing support announced in the Comprehensive Spending Review.
Many businesses are still being held back, however, by a lack of access to suitable commercial vehicle charging at public, depot and shared hub locations.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Half a year of declining demand for new vans reflects a difficult economic climate and weak business confidence and the fact that this downturn comes just as industry invests heavily to expand its zero emission LCV offering is particularly concerning. Decarbonisation remains a shared ambition but with the EV market more than a third below this year’s target, bold measures are needed to drive demand. Accelerated CV infrastructure rollout, quicker grid connections and streamlined planning are now critical.”
Webfleet joins forces with Dynamon to deliver decarbonisation reports
Dynamon, a leading provider of fleet optimisation software, has joined forces with Webfleet, Bridgestone’s globally trusted fleet management solution, to deliver advanced, data-backed decarbonisation reports.
The new integration enables commercial fleets to access tailored reports that provide clear answers to key questions around vehicle replacement, EV rollout strategies, charger requirements and low-carbon fuel alternatives – without the need for costly external consultancy.
By combining Webfleet’s telematics insights with Dynamon’s advanced optimisation tool, ZERO, fleet operators can identify the most effective pathways to net zero and accelerate their transition to more sustainable operations.
Dynamon’s involvement as a service provider within the Webfleet EV Services Platform – an ecosystem that brings together leading energy and mobility services – laid the foundation for the integration.
Using Webfleet.connect, the solution enables seamless data exchange between the two platforms, giving users the ability to make informed decisions on
everything from vehicle suitability and infrastructure planning to total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis.
“Decarbonising a fleet can feel like stepping into the unknown
and can be complex, costly and full of uncertainty,” said Dean Mahoney, Business Development Director at Dynamon.
“By combining Webfleet’s telematics data with Dynamon’s advanced simulation and insight tools, we take the guesswork out of the journey and give fleet operators the confidence to move forward.”
Beverley Wise, Regional Director for the UK and Ireland region at Webfleet, a Bridgestone company, added: “Our collaboration with Dynamon empowers fleets to transform their operational data into practical steps toward decarbonisation.
“Together, we’re removing barriers to electrification by making datadriven decision-making more accessible and affordable.”
The Dynamon decarbonisation report is available to fleet operators at a fraction of the cost of traditional consultancy –delivering savings of up to 80% compared to typical assessments. By making detailed carbon reduction analysis more accessible, the integration helps fleets meet growing regulatory and sustainability demands.
Category B Licence holders permitted to drive Zero Emissions vehicles (ZEV) up to 4,250kg
From 10 June 2025, drivers that hold a valid category B driving licence (standard car licence) will be permitted to drive a zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 4,250kg.
ZEVs are powered by electric or hydrogen, with the previous permitted limit up to 3,500kg on a standard car license - a limit that still applies for all other vehicle types, including hybrid vehicles.
The DVLA has stated that this change has been implemented to account for the increased mass of batteries and fuel cells in electric vehicles.
The RHA’s Head of Technical, Engineering and Policy, Aaron Peters, said: “The increased weight limits allow for the additional weight of batteries and fuel systems in electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles without reducing payload capacity. For operators this can
improve operational efficiency and reduce the need for multiple trips.”
“Encouraging the use of ZEVs and AFVs aligns with broader environmental goals, reducing emissions and promoting cleaner transportation options within the haulage industry.”
This change is only relevant to drivers who passed their test on or after 1 January 1997. Drivers who passed before this date are usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM.

ISUZU D-MAX WINS ‘BEST WORKHORSE PICKUP’ FOR 13th YEAR IN A ROW AT 2025 TRADE VAN DRIVER AWARDS
Isuzu UK has announced that the Isuzu D-Max has once again been crowned ‘Best Workhorse Pickup’ at the prestigious Trade Van Driver Awards 2025, marking its 13th consecutive win in this category.
Held annually, the Trade Van Driver Awards have become recognised as the Oscars of the trade van world, offering a unique voice in the light commercial vehicle sector by combining the insights of expert journalists and working van users alike.
Now in their thirteenth year, these awards are the only accolades judged jointly by an expert panel and the magazine’s readers – owner-drivers and small fleet operators who rely on their vehicles day in, day out.
Editor of Trade Van Driver, Matthew Eisenegger, commented: “Trade Van Driver Magazine prides itself on offering a true reflection of the thoughts and feelings of its
readership. Now in their thirteenth year, it is great to see some products taking the accolade for a 13th time, as well as new products scoring a first win.”
The judges added: “No prizes are offered for those who guessed that the mighty D-Max would clinch this prize again, as it has done every year since the Trade Van Driver Awards began 13 years ago. While Isuzu faces some strong and capable opposition, the judges still felt that this truck’s mixture of tough performance, splendid standard spec and rock bottom prices were again enough to battle through to the top place. We had a D-Max on test for nine months recently and were left convinced that while coming close, none of
the rivals could quite match it.”
George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, expressed his pride in the D-Max’s continued success: “We’re over the moon to see the D-Max win for the thirteenth time running at the Trade Van Driver Awards. This isn’t just an on the hoof lucky streak – it’s a testament to the unbridled capability, durability and reliability of every model.
The Isuzu D-Max is the ultimate workhorse pick-up. And clearly, our customers love to take the reins.”
This latest accolade adds to a growing list of achievements for the Isuzu D-Max in 2025.
The continued recognition highlights Isuzu’s unwavering dedication to delivering a robust,
reliable, and remarkably wellequipped pick-up that doesn’t just meet expectations but exceeds them, year after year.
Trade Van Driver is the UK’s only magazine dedicated to ownerdrivers and small fleet operators who use light commercial vehicles in their businesses. Combining expert journalism with realworld feedback from its working readership, the magazine provides a trusted and practical perspective on the van and pick-up market.
The Trade Van Driver Awards, now in their 13th year, honour the best in the business across a variety of categories, reflecting the products that truly resonate with those who rely on them most.
