WAYS TO PROTECT YOUTH FROM GUN VIOLENCE
Recognize gun violence as a PREVENTABLE public health problem
Implement strategies that IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE for young people like neighborhood ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, YOUTH EMPLOYMENT, & YOUTH PROGRAMMING.
Begin violence PREVENTION EFFORTS during early childhood since risks of involvement in gun-related crime increase rapidly as young people age

Youth Perspective: Gun Violence
POEM BY JORGE MORALES
Gun violence is a scary topic to think about, but conversations are important with trusted adults. Lack of gun violence awareness leads to many people losing their lives.
Living in an area where I can't go outside when it's late because of the fear it produces, due to gun violence is a problem. Gun violence has affected me and my family in many ways.
My family has had to face gun violence with my sisters being shot at and her friends being injured
Gun violence has changed my entire perspective.
Gun violence has made my mom say not to go out when it's dark because she is scared I will be shot
Gun violence are words that no kid should have to hear but due to the problem that we are facing they have to hear it
My siblings play outside everyday, I am scared that when I am at school or at work that a loose bullet could hit them anytime This is the new normal in our neighborhood, we are no strangers to hearing gunshots day in and day out There is no stop to violence in my Westwood neighborhood. We need more safety in all our neighborhoods in order to make all youth and children feel safe in their own houses and backyards. When I first heard about the crime this past weekend at Valverde Park, I was in shock of how young some of the victims are When I hear youth gun violence, I mainly think of youth 16 and up and never about a 3 year old victim But what we don't realize is that it can affect anyone/everyone at any time

"Troung An" Gift Shop
Troung An Gift Shop has been in Denver since 1980, when the family first migrated to Colorado from Vietnam It is located inside the Little Saigon Business District on Federal street In opening the first Asian gift shop, the family wanted to bring some of their Eastern culture and share it with the United States A gift shop was the best way to share their diverse and rich culture because they are able to share their traditions and cultural gifts from their shop
When I first entered the store, I was amazed by the variety of products and gifts that you were able to get There were face masks, bamboo, food, herbs, statues, stationary and many other things This small business prides itself in the fact that it is a place where every person of each background is invited to come in and learn more about the Vietnamese culture

Community Recognition Youth Leadership Award
Hi! My name is Sayuri Toribio and I am 18 years old I recently graduated from Kent Denver School and I am now starting my bachelors at Regis University. I moved to the United States when I was only 6 years old and I have lived in the Westwood neighborhood for about 10 years I started getting involved in my community by joining my elementary gardening class and was then invited to community cleanup events From there, I knew that making my community better was something that I always want to do. One of my biggest accomplishments is the Westwood Youth led Bike Shop that other youth and I helped start We won $30,000 from the Rose Foundation grant and we started learning how to budget, plan, and advertise our bike shop to help our community be a healthier place and also help reduce violence within our community I currently work with a grant called the Youth Safety Micro Grant from the Denver Department of Safety that supports youth projects to reduce violence in the Southwest community Through this project, I have learned the role of informing the community residents about topics happening in their community from the youth perspective
Beyond high school, I want to become a successful Hispanic woman that paves a path for other young Hispanic youth that do not see themselves represented in society I want to be able to open up a nonprofit or continue to expand my leadership role to reach even more people I am motivated by my family and myself to continue with higher education because I am curious about what the world has to offer and what I can learn from other people. I have learned that you cannot work alone and that you will always need a community to support you
¡Hola!
