Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of 360 Media Group’s 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet report

T

his report tracks business-customer trust in fleet suppliers, at a time when the fleet sector is undergoing transformational upheaval. The rapid and accelerating adoption of electric vehicles is revolutionising the fleet ecosystem, leading to fundamental changes in brand perceptions and customer expectations. Our recent Fleet Outlook report highlighted increasing fleet demand for improved services, support in navigating carbon reporting, managing electric-charging payments and removing the administrative burden associated with operating a greener, cleaner fleet. Electrification and decarbonisation are putting so much pressure on fleet decision makers that 45% of them expect to add or change leasing providers as they switch to zero-emission fleets. In these turbulent times, our research also revealed that 71% of fleets buy from brands that

they trust. In fact, in our vehicle manufacturer tracking study – which assesses 41 car and van brands – fleets rated 'trust' as the highestscoring brand attribute. This 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet report appraises the fleet supply chain, identifying those brands that end-users trust most. It is based on the votes of 400 fleet decision makers; so the brands in our Top 100 have truly earned the right to be part of this exclusive club. The report is split into nine supply categories, with the brands in each category listed in alphabetical order. The best-in-class brand is highlighted with a Platinum Award, while brands in the upper quartile of their sector are identified by a gold badge. 360 Media Group will publish this report annually, enabling fleets to identify and confidently buy from the most trusted brands.

100 trusted brands

Executive summary This inaugural 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet report assesses the confidence that fleet buyers have in the fleet supply chain. Our extensive research identifies the brands that Britain’s fleets trust, and how perceptions of these brands can vary by supply category. According to our recent OEM Brand Tracker report, Trust is the highest-rating brand attribute of all KPIs measured across 26 car manufacturers and 15 van brands. 71% of fleet buyers cite Trust as the reason to purchase from a fleet manufacturer or supplier. As the automotive sector evolves, buying expectations are likely to evolve, too. In recent times, it was not uncommon for fleet managers to have minimal contact with drivers, particularly those with company cars. Many would deploy a self-serve leasing portal for ordering and servicing purposes. But, as the EV revolution gathers pace, expectations are somewhat different. Fleet managers are expected to know where you can charge your EV, recommend or specify home charger brands and solve the payment and charging reimbursement challenges, using brands that are unfamiliar to many. Fleets expect support from the supply chain to help them meet these challenges. To reinforce why trust is crucial, we share five ways fleets are impacted by change, and the things the fleet supply chain must consider: 1. Fleet objectives The number one priority for UK fleets is to electrify their leasing inventory. This is hardly surprising, what's more interesting is that 45% of fleets tell us they expect to add to, or change, their provider in the next 12 months. 2. Pain point removal Removing the administrative burden associated with payment and reimbursement of EV charging is the number one fleet pain point. While one-third of fleets have no plans to order an electric vehicle in the next 12 months, those fleets with electric vehicles require support.

4

Powered by 360 Media Group

3. All change – how does this impact Trust? ● As OEMs begin to roll-out the agency model, it seems that fleets are behind the curve. Only 29% of them are aware of, and understand, the agency model. ● Interest in car subscriptions is high. 48% of fleets say they are likely to consider it in the next 12 months. ● With 1-in-3 company car drivers categorised as perk drivers: safety, CO2 emissions and technology are the three main reasons for replacing company cars. Brands that communicate these messages, are among the most trusted. 4. Helping fleets to help themselves Around half of fleets claim to understand the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) model, if this is the accepted calculation to justify the switch to EVs, more prominent digital tools such as a TCO calculator must be made available to educate and assist fleets. ● The generous BIK tax incentive for lowemission vehicles is not yet achieving its full potential, as 1-in-5 fleets do not offer their drivers a choice on their company car. These fleets potentially risk losing talent that wishes to unlock the low BIK tax benefits. ● Despite this, fleets expect that a combined 18% of car orders placed in the next 12 months with be electric. One consideration for leasing providers is to help fleets communicate effectively with their drivers during the transition to EVs. 5. Information sources We live in a multi-media world, and so do fleet managers. They consume content to help them in their day-to-day roles via mobiles, tablets, laptops, computers and, of course, print. For those fleets in transition, the first place that they go to access information on electric vehicles is the manufacturer’s website, and, when shortlisting suppliers, fleets trust the information provided in digital newsletters. 1-in-4 fleets now also tell us they use LinkedIn to shortlist suppliers.

Who do fleets trust the most? The brand categories are leasing, OEM cars, OEM vans, OEM cars & vans combined, Rental, Fleet Services, Tracking, EV Services and Charging. Car and van makers achieved the best ratings, with brands that provide both types, scoring highest. Mercedes-Benz is the class leader. The most trusted category is Leasing,

while, outside of the OEMs, the Tesla Supercharger brand scores highest. Allstar takes first place in EV Services, while the best-in-class brands across the core sectors of Fleet Services, Leasing, and Rental are The AA, Volkswagen Financial Services and Europcar, respectively. Meanwhile, the Tracking category is headed by Michelin Connected Fleet.

Car brands T

he past two years have highlighted the multitude of expectations that business customers place on car brands. Manufacturing high-quality vehicles is merely the minimum requirement, as fleets seek account-management support to contend with the challenges of long lead times, rising prices, shrinking discounts and the complications of transitioning their operations to electric vehicles. In this new working environment, consultation and communication have moved centre stage, as decision makers try to keep abreast of uncertain vehicle delivery dates; find solutions for order cancellations, and recalibrate company car choice bands, as prices increase between order and delivery. These difficult circumstances have seen trusted car brands communicate clearly and precisely when they have had no option but to increase prices. They've also had to maintain a consistent approach through all their sales channels to protect future residual values. Car brands included in the 100 Trusted Brands have also been in lockstep with their customers, as they adopt electric cars, supplying data for all of the elements that make up the total cost of ownership (TCO), so that fleet decision

makers can change the foundations of car policies from lease rentals to wholelife costs. Only by factoring in tax, National Insurance, capital allowances, service, maintenance and repair cost projections – plus electricity versus petrol/diesel costs – can fleet decision makers build a business case to electrify company cars, thereby saving drivers a fortune in benefit-inkind tax, and resurrecting the company car as a hugely-attractive employee benefit. Several brands have gone further still, providing demonstrator vehicles for extended periods to enable businesses and their drivers to assess the viability of electric power trains, and to identify where they will require charging infrastructure. Opening access to charging networks via a single RFID tag or app has reassured drivers suffering from range or charging anxiety. In a market where demand has far exceeded supply for almost 24 months, some car brands have disappointed fleet customers with their short-term profiteering. The manufacturers that made it into the 100 Trusted Brands stood by their clients and were supportive suppliers during one of the most difficult periods that the automotive industry has ever faced.

Van brands T

he complexity of light commercial vehicles makes a trusting relationship between fleet customer and LCV brands absolutely essential. Few LCVs operate in the ‘vanilla’ form in which they left the factory production line; even panel vans are racked, tooled and signwritten to the requirements of the fleet, while more specialist builds, such as dropsides, tippers and Lutons, demand an in-depth understanding of the engineering involved, including powertrains and payloads. LCV manufacturers within the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet offer these services at source, so their vehicles are ready to work from the moment they're delivered. It goes without saying that the LCV makers among the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet – alongside their dedicated commercial vehicle dealers – have specialist staff who understand these specific needs and recognise the importance of LCVs as essential business tools. If an LCV stops working, a business can grind to a halt, so vehicle reliability, backed by

14

workshops that open before the typical working day starts and close long after it ends, can be vital. This flexibility maximises vehicle uptime – that's especially important when maintenance requirements are rising due to extended delivery times forcing businesses to keep their LCVs for longer, resulting in higher mileages. And now, as clean air zones expand in cities across the country – and the 2030 deadline looms for the end of sales of new diesel vans – fleet customers need the assistance of LCV suppliers in the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet more than ever. Businesses also depend on reliable advice to find the right electric vehicles to replace their diesel models. They are desperate for finance products that make electric LCVs as affordable as their predecessors, despite the significantly higher list prices. And they need accurate total cost of ownership calculations to build confidence in zero-emission technologies. Only the 100 trusted brands are meeting these exacting standards.

Charging E

ven the most experienced fleet decision makers were novices in electric vehicle charging just a few short years ago. At breakneck speed, the need to build a charging eco-system to support the successful adoption of electric cars and vans has placed enormous reliance on EV charging suppliers. Their role is not simply confined to the number and location of their charge points, but also the speed, reliability and data captured by those chargers. So, while it makes a company car driver’s life easier to have ready-access to thousands of chargers – without having to carry scores of RFID tags or smartphone apps – from a fleet operator’s perspective what matters is the richness and accuracy of data from each charging event. Reimbursing electric business miles can be fiendishly complicated, with a mix of home, workplace and public chargers being used. This can result in a tsunami of charging invoices,

18

in multiple formats, some of which may be missing vital information, such as VAT. Looking to the future, businesses need the same control of EV charging spend as they have enjoyed with petrol and diesel fuel cards. The charging companies that have made it into the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet have understood these fleet and driver requirements and acted professionally to deliver them. The public EV charging world may not yet be perfect from a fleet operator perspective, but the progress towards robust and reliable solutions has been phenomenal at a time when charging companies are investing much time and resource in expanding their networks. Moreover, progress in helping drivers to identify vacant chargers, increasing the size of charging bays to accommodate larger electric vans, and providing a full spectrum of charging speeds – from slow, convenient kerbside chargers to ultra-rapid motorway chargers – continues its rapid progress.

BP Pulse

EV specialist support T

he simplicity of fuelling company cars and vans with petrol and diesel seems quaint compared to the complexity of recharging the batteries of electric vehicles. Tariffs vary widely, from low-cost domestic systems and cheap kerbside chargers, to workplace charging (sometimes free) and higher-cost, rapid public chargers. Working out where drivers can replenish their EVs with minimum, and ideally zero, disruption to their productivity, demands a completely new charger database. Calculating how much to reimburse drivers fairly for using their home electricity to power their company car or van is a complex task

that demands sophisticated tools. Amalgamating numerous charging invoices into a coherent report, with meaningful management information, is essential. As the old business mantra goes: 'If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it'. The electric specialist providers that have made it into the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet have all developed innovative solutions to make the role of the fleet decision maker easier. Ranging from start-ups to established global businesses, they have all grasped the nettle of electrification, to deliver reliable and practical tools, on which the future of electricfleet management will depend.

Allstar Allstar is the leading provider of a wide range 2022 of bespoke fuel cards, business credit cards and fleet management solutions. Since our inception as Blue Star Garages, creating innovative payment solutions has been at our core, and we now have the UK's largest fuel network. Allstar is part of FLEETCOR, a leading global business-payments company.

Mina Mina’s multi-award-winning payment solution for EV charging is the UK’s only platform which allows fleet and business electric vehicles to be charged at home and on the go – resulting in a single monthly invoice for the business. Used by some of the UK's largest fleets, Mina Homecharge accurately pays the employee's energy supplier for charging their company EV at home. Meanwhile, with Mina Chargepass, employees can use the UK’s fastest-charging network dedicated to businesses – including the Allstar and InstaVolt networks.

DRAX Group Drax Group is an energy company engaged in renewable power generation, the production of sustainable biomass and the sale of renewable electricity to businesses. It is the UK's largest supplier of renewable electricity, via biomass, hydro-electric and pumped-hydro storage assets across four sites in England and Scotland.

Zap-Map Zap-Map makes electric-vehicle charging simple. It's the UK’s leading app and digital platform for EV drivers to search for available charge points, plan longer electric journeys, pay for charging and share updates with other electric-vehicle drivers. With over 95% of public charge points mapped – and around 70% of charge points showing live availability status – Zap-Map provides EV drivers with the peace of mind and confidence to drive any length of journey in their vehicles.

Mina

Make paying for EV charging radically simple with Mina

Many businesses rely on the government’s Advisory Electricity Rate (AER) of 5ppm as a way of reimbursing staff for business travel. This means their employees are often faced with subsidising business travel costs – some to the tune of thousands of pounds a year. In Mina’s inaugural report, 32,500 charge sessions were assessed. Staggerinly, 94% of athome charges and 100% of on-the-go charges exceeded the AER. The average pence-per-mile cost at home was 9p, while for public charging it was a rate-busting 20p. Simply put, the AER is not fit for purpose, and a flat rate won’t ever work, due to the rising and differing tariff costs. Mina offers a smart solution, an accurate way of paying for employees' business-charging costs, trusted by some of the UK’s largest fleets. Mina’s unique approach makes paying for EV

charging radically simple and allows accurate payments to be made direct to suppliers, whether the charging was done at home or in public. Mina ensures that employees don’t pay anything for business charging, while the company receives a convenient single monthly invoice for all charging costs. Mina Homecharge integrates with employees’ home chargers and energy suppliers, and calculates the exact cost of all charges. With a tariff management system continually monitoring fluctuating rates, employees can be assured that charging costs are always paid for accurately, direct to their home energy supplier. When charging on the road with a Mina Chargepass, employees can replenish their EV anywhere within the UK’s fastest charging network dedicated to business, where, 44% of units have rapid or ultra-rapid charging speeds. Mina is the only EV chargecard to include the excellent InstaVolt and Allstar networks, so employees are back on the road in no time (the average charge takes 46 minutes). Meanwhile, businesses can see key insights including carbon intensity, location and the charge duration of every session, via the Fleet Portal. Mina makes paying for EV charging transparent, simple and accurate for both employers and employees.

Holman Holman is one of the most trusted brands in the UK fleet industry, because it is both a company with strong roots in the sector, and a major global player. And despite this scale, it is still a family-owned business. As a result, Holman is a leader in funding and fleet management services, but also has people working on a daily basis with our customers, solving their particular challenges. This combination of innovation and interpersonal means Holman is ideally placed to act strategically and consultatively for customers. With more than three decades of operations in the UK, it has been with many of

its customers for years, and its staff are experts in their respective fields. Whether it is funding customer fleets in innovative ways, providing in-life support, creating bespoke engineering solutions or offering strategic insight through new digital systems, Holman does things differently – and always for the benefit of its customers. At its heart is the philosophy that all profit gains and savings are provided to the customer, and that the distribution and choice of costs are equitable and transparent. It is this combination of transparency and technology that makes it one of the most trusted suppliers in the market.

Leasing Holman offers a variety of leasing and financing models, but key is its finance lease product. Coupled with Holman’s management services, the customer retains full control and transparency of vehicles and has the ability to flex as it needs, and retain profits from the sale. It means fleets can make decisions that are right for their own business, rather than being tied into contracts stipulated by other providers.

SMR Holman manages SMR for tens of thousands of cars, vans and specialist vehicles through its 80-strong, in-house team of experts. They are backed up by state-of-the-art digital systems and its long-established 500-strong workshop network, Masterserve. Its team closely monitors each stage of the repair process and, as with everything Holman does, all costs are transparent, so the fleet can see what is really happening, and crucially, where efficiencies and savings can be made.

Portfolio Management Holman’s Portfolio Management programme enables every vehicle to be looked at individually, and on a regular basis, to assess its ongoing fitness for purpose and cost effectiveness. As well as analysis of in-life costs, operational needs and residual-value strength, it looks at time on fleet and the best defleeting and replacement options.

Rental O

nce the ultimate short-term vehicle solution, vehicle hire has transformed its offering to provide a spectrum of services that stretch from rental by the hour to multi-month agreements. Rental now plays a key role as a mobility service option, an alternative to pool cars and a first and last mile solution for drivers who prefer to let the train take the strain. Rental has also become the ‘go-to’ answer for businesses looking to get a new recruit mobile during their probation period; as a stopgap while businesses wait for delayed new vehicle purchases; and as a means to serve shorter, fixed-term contracts that might continue to roll on. A few core qualities, however, run through the best rental services like writing through a stick of rock. The first is a wide selection of vehicles, all in good condition, with service, maintenance and breakdown cover bundled into the agreement. Then there’s the speed of access, with rental companies vying to deliver vehicles within four

hours of request. The shortage of new vehicles, due to the semiconductor crisis, has limited the size of rental fleets and increased the utilisation rates of their cars and vans, but the speed of response in delivering assets worth tens of thousands of pounds is still impressive. For drivers, the ease and speed of the collection and delivery process matters. Rental companies in the 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet conduct licence checks and vehicle inspections in the blink of an eye. But it’s the end-of-contract process where the 100 trusted brands' quality truly shines through. Fleet operators need to trust that hire charges reflect precisely the duration of the rental, that any damage found at the end of a hire was actually caused by their drivers, and have faith that any repair costs are fair, not inflated. Likewise, business customers want any fuel recharges to be reasonable, rather than profiteered. And they want reliable, consistent invoices to itemise all of these elements, so they can address any concerns with the driver.

Telematics C

onnected vehicle technologies have become a cornerstone of pro-active fleet management, allowing fleet managers to improve safety, boost productivity, minimise costs and transition seamlessly to EVs. While there is no shortage of companies offering telematics services, 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet suppliers go above and beyond the installation of ‘black boxes’ to track vehicles. From the start, they listen to a fleet's objectives and design bespoke solutions to deliver them. For some customers, this may be the identification of higher-risk drivers. They monitor incidents of speeding and harsh braking to spot those drivers most likely to have an accident. With this data, driver training can then be targeted accurately. For other customers, the ability to identify the employee with the right skillset and the necessary parts inventory on board has become a key operational tool to provide a 'right-firsttime' service to their own clients. Telematics is also central to efficient route planning, helping to plot the quickest route between multiple stops, saving time and fuel. Telemetry also helps fleets to reduce engine idling time and its associated costs. With so many sensors on board, telematics

gives fleet managers a tool to get on the front foot with vehicle maintenance, too. The data is analysed by AI to signal alerts about components showing the first signs of failure. This paves the way for predictive maintenance, lessening downtime and breakdowns. As fleets transition to electric powertrains, telematics provides vital data of vehicle routes and mileages, identifying vehicles that could be switched to battery models without having to recharge during the working day, and locating charging stations for those that need to plug in.
