While I think it is human nature to be inquisitive, there are some of us who are more curious than others, and I am sure it will come as no surprise to many of you that I can’t help myself! I am nosey, curious and incredibly inquisitive when it comes to people’s homes. I am fascinated by how people live, how they decorate, what inspires them and why. Which is perhaps why writing about homes has become my life. From the outset I knew I was going to enjoy meeting our cover home homeowners Ange and Mike Scott. From the lines of the exterior through to their green front door, I was instantly intrigued to see, and know more. And I am delighted to be able to share what I found with you on page 12. Built by Fowler Homes this new build has been transformed from house to home with Ange and Mike’s creative use of colour and passion for interiors. Further satisfying my curiosity this issue is our new section abode Property (page 35). Stepping inside an array of houses from Mike Pero Real Estate, this section offers a glimpse into the vast and interesting properties for sale around Christchurch and the South Island. Also this issue we ensure you are well prepared for winter; from snuggly throws and blankets (page 08 and 63) to the latest in hot water heating (page 20), to expert advice on gas fires, heat pumps and ducted air conditioning (page 22). Ensuring no stone has been left un-turned in the quest for keeping warm! Inspiration, information and endless ideas for the home are found in the pages before you. So grab a cup of tea, snuggle up, keep warm and enjoy our latest issue.

In Hot Water Lesley Storm from Edward Gibbon shares an insight into hot water heating
Q
What water heating solutions does Rinnai offer Canterbury home owners? he innai I I I continuous flow gas water heater uses a heat exchanger to heat water only when it s needed, which in turn helps you save on your energy bill. innai I I I water heating saves homeowners of running costs compared to an electric storage cylinder valuable savings that allow you to enjoy hot water for less!
Q
How does it work? hen a continous flow gas heater senses the demand for water flow, such as turning on a tap or a shower, the unit begins heating water as it passes through the heat exchanger. ecause there is no need for a storage tan you enjoy an endless supply of hot water at a consistent temperature even if you and your family are using it for multiple tas s! hen the water flow stops, the continous flow gas water heater shuts down, using less energy by not incurring the standby loss associated with tan s.
Q
Tell us about the Rinnai Bathroom Deluxe Controller. ble to run a bath for you the innai athroom eluxe ontroller, can turn off the water, then tell you when it s ready its bath time genius! Q
What are the benefits of Stainless Steel Mains Pressure? ost new builds are mains pressure and a lot of people are upgrading their low pressure to a mains pressure when they need to replace their old cylinder. he uplex tainless teel ains ressure ylinders are extremely lightweight, and come with a year warranty. here is no anode to maintain and coiled options are available for connection to wet bac , solar or boiler. oth the and have a twin element option for faster recovery which means no running out of hot water in the evenings when it s time to shower and run the ids baths, providing great night rate electricity. edwardgibbon.co.nz | 03 366 7137 rinnai.co.nz/waterheating

heating
Warming up Winter Part two of our winter warming series looks at different types of home heating, which one is for you? Staying cosy and warm has never been easier with a wealth of innovative, highquality home heating options that are not only practical and functional, but designed to sit effortlessly within the aesthetics of our home environment. When it comes to heating, the secret to minimising your energy bill is to make sure your home is adequately insulated. If your home isn’t, it is highly likely you are paying more than you need to heat your home. So it is essential you are addressing heating and insulation in tandem to make sure your lovely warm air isn’t simply escaping outdoors. JULY/AUGUST 2014
In addition to this, simple measures such as the use of thermal curtains and sealing gaps and cracks, will eliminate draughts and warm air escaping where it shouldn’t. It also pays to remember that heating a room to a moderate constant temperature is much more efficient than a fluctuating heat which sees a room alternate from being too hot, to too cold. There are a number of home heating options available and, in all instances, it is critical you are selecting and installing a heating solution that is relevant and suitable to your home.
DID YOU KNOW
Check out powerswitch.org.nz to find out who is offering the best deal when it comes to energy prices. Did you know the average annual consumption for a medium sized household – 8650kWh per year – in Christchurch can vary from $2148 to $2653 simply based on who the household energy supplier is!

WOOD FIRES When used properly wood burners are a great and economical option, especially if you’ve got access to free or cheap firewood, however you need to ensure your wood fire is clean air approved especially in Christchurch. osca wood fires offer efficiency and affordability in one. Standing out from the crowd their stylish silhouette and elegant curved sides bring a touch of modern style to the home. On the inside, the revolutionary integrated combustion plate and secondary air system results in low emission levels. ll osca wood fires are National Environmental Standards (NES) approved – ensuring they are suitable for the local Christchurch environment. hen buying a wood fire you need to consider, efficiency rating, clean burn, emission levels and size. Like all heat sources you need to choose a wood fire that suits the size of the room – one that is neither too big, or too small. Make sure you are referring to the average heat output of the fireplace rather than the
Bosca Firepoint 360
peak output. As for a clean burn, wood fires need to burn wood at a high enough temperature to not emit smoke. So you want to be able to turn you fire down rather than have it operating at peak output. It also pays to note that dry wood will burn cleaner than wet wood. nli e other wood fires, osca fires do not require a fully insulated hearth. Instead, you are able to choose from either a slim-line steel or a dark transparent glass ash hearth to protect the floor from any fire debris.

Far cleaner than woodburning fires, gas is favoured in clean air areas, making it a popular heating option in the Canterbury area.
GLASSFRONTED GAS FIREPLACES ARE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE EFFICIENT THAN OPEN FRONTED AND CREATE MUCH SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINTS JULY/AUGUST 2014
Like other heating options, most modern gas fires can be set to come on at particular times, and their thermostats ensure the house is maintained at the correct temperature. Where possible avoid portable gas heaters, as these are the most expensive heat source. HEATPUMPS While it all depends on the size of your heatpump, they are still regarded by Consumer NZ as the lowest cost form of electric home heating. Be smart about your energy use and ensure you have the right size heat pump for your space. If you pick one that is too small, it will have to work hard all of the time, and will use more power than necessary. One the right size should heat the space from cold in 5-15 minutes. eatpumps are li e many appliances they work at their best when they are well maintained and kept clean. Ideally you should be cleaning the filters on your heatpump every few weeks. The filters are easy to remove and should be vacuumed, or washed and dried and then replaced in the machine. A professional clean and service should happen at least every year. Standing out from the crowd LG Air has been offering heatpumps to the local New Zealand market since 2009 and boasts innovative additions designed to improve quality and performance. Additions such as the WIFI application for smartphones, which allows users to remotely control their air conditioner from anywhere in the world and innovative power savings technologies. Combined with their stylish design LG Air heatpumps are not only practical but aesthetically pleasing.
The British Allergy Foundation awarded the LG highwall heatpumps a tick of approval for the innovative filter protection reducing dust, allergens and odours.
The larger LG high wall heatpumps can throw air up to 1 m across a room, heating even the furthest corners; while the smaller units are unbelievably quiet at only 19dB.

Stay warm this winter Try LG Heatpumps, the warmer, efficient, healthier alternative
DUCTED AIR CONDITIONING LG Air ducted air conditioning systems work exactly the same way as the more common high wall heatpumps, in that there is an indoor unit and an outdoor unit, and by passing a refrigerant between them, they transfer heat (or cooling) into a room. Unlike the high wall system, where the indoor unit looks pretty and is visible, the ducted indoor unit is hidden away in the ceiling space, and then uses flexible ducts to pass the heat into multiple rooms in a house through unobtrusive vents in the ceilings, or walls, or floor. ir is suc ed into the machine from one or more vents, and is heated (or cooled) and then passed back to the selected rooms. The LG Air system is controlled by an attractive wall mounted LCD panel which has many of the same features as the remote control on a high wall unit – temperature, fan speed, mode and so forth. Some units also allow you to turn on and off selected rooms, for example a guest bedroom, as needed. he benefits of a ducted system include being able to heat multiple rooms, a uiet operation, gentle airflow, and a more unobtrusive look. JULY/AUGUST 2014
Like other heatpumps – the most important thing is choosing the right model for the space. The rooms required to be heated and cooled need to be measured, and the degree of insulation, double glazing, sun location and the number of doors and windows need to be taken into consideration in order to select the right model. The maths tells your air conditioning professional which is the right model. Ducted air conditioning systems offer much more than simply home heating, able to operate in dehumidify mode they can remove moisture from the air of your home to create a healthier environment. And of course, as our summers get warmer, they are excellent at providing a cool flow of air.

Personal touch This new kitchen is much more than the heart of the home but a showcase of family talents
For Lesley and Bill Butler building a new home was not only an exciting undertaking but an opportunity to engage son, Ryan, to design, craft and build the heart of their home. As the owner of Ryan’s Kitchens and Joinery, Ryan was able to draw on his talented team, including sister Leanne and kitchen designer Nikki Davidson, to turn his parents wants and dreams into a reality. “We wanted something which was workable, elegant and that effortlessly blended into the open-plan space,” shares Lesley. JULY/AUGUST 2014
“Lesley and Bill wanted a black and white kitchen that was classy, modern and streamlined,” shares Nikki. “With a separate scullery featuring a Tandem Pantry and a coffee making area.” Monochromatic in appearance the kitchen is comprised of Resene Alabaster on the walls, Oak veneer stained chocolate to match the furniture in the rest of the space, and an impressive Antarctica Corian benchtop. Described as a ‘soft white background texture with large stark white particles’, the benchtop offered not only the

desired aesthetic but the much needed functionality. “Made from natural minerals and acrylic resins, Corian is incredibly versatile and hard wearing, offers unlimited design options and just feels great to touch,” shares Nicky Duggan of Evolution Surfaces. “It can be shaped, moulded, grooved and embossed, plus as the joins are inconspicuous it provides a unique seamless look.” “As Corian is nonporous,” continues Nicky, “it can withstand red wine and food stains better than almost all other products. It also means it is super hygienic and easy to clean.” Renewable and repairable, Corian also offers peace of mind, as to bring the finish back to new, all that is required is a re-sand and re-buff. And if the worst should happen, it can generally be repaired on site with very little disruption or evidence. Achieving a streamlined, elegant finish saw appliances such as the microwave hidden away behind cabinetry
and the integration of kitchen technology from Blum. “All the hinges and drawer hardware are soft-close,” shares Leanne. “While the upper cabinetry units have electric lifts.” Offering a unique point of difference to the space is the position and material choice for the splashback. “People thought we were crazy wanting to have a window there,” laughs Lesley. “But it is great!” Flooding the space with natural light, the glass is not only a practical material choice for the splashback, but allows Lesley and Bill to see what is going on outside. “We can sit at the breakfast bar and look across the kitchen to the outdoors, it’s lovely.” Having built in the past, Lesley and Bill are quick to point out that this is their best kitchen yet. “It is everything we wanted it to be and more, we wouldn’t change a thing.” corian.co.nz | 0800 267 426 ryanskitchens.co.nz JULY/AUGUST 2014

Spa Time Achieve the ultimate in home relaxation with a spa bath
Clearlite Spa Bath
Now more than ever, bathroom features can help make a house a home. And as spacious showers become more popular, the option of removing the bathtub can seem like the right one. But is it? When planning your bathroom it can be a good idea to keep in mind how remodelling could improve your home’s resale appeal. Having a shower instead of a bath probably won’t affect the value of the property, but you do run the risk of limiting your market. For a family with young children or pets, having a bath JULY/AUGUST 2014
is often a chief concern. And just as important as practicality is indulgence. There are few things more soothing than being able to relax in your own space. And while it is convenient to jump in the shower, the luxury of a hot relaxing soak can be the perfect way to reduce the pressures of daily life. For those who like nothing more than to unwind in a long hot bath, upgrading to a spa bath will offer the ultimate in home relaxation. There are a variety of different spa systems available so make sure you
research the type of massage and experience you would like to achieve before taking the plunge. With an array of sizes and styles on offer, the best place to start when it comes to creating the perfect spa experience is by selecting the right jets. The decision of which type of jet, or combination of jets, is likely to depend on the style of body massage you require. Combining different types of jets will optimise the function of your spa bath.
bathrooms
WHICH SPA BATH IS FOR YOU...
Standard Jets provide a concentrated flow of water and air through adjustable eyeball outlets that allow fingertip control of the directional flow and intensity of the water. Each jet can be independently adjusted to suit personal preferences. The pressure released by a Standard Jet delivers a deep massage that can relieve muscle tension and ease pain in a targeted area.
If a vigorous massage that targets specific areas to relieve body pain and sooth tender muscles is needed, then a Standard Spa would be the perfect choice. For general relaxation and to relieve stress, the Whisper Spa is the ideal choice because it delivers a gentle tingling experience without a direct focus of pressure. The combination of Whisper and Mini Jets provides the ultimate in relaxation, targeting the back area with the Mini Jets while delivering the soothing tingle created by Whisper Jets. A Hydro Spa uses both Standard and Mini Jets for a high-pressure water massage in all the key places. Standard Jets target the sides of the body and legs and the sets of Mini Jets deliver an invigorating focus on the back.
Whisper Jets send air through the fixed jets, dispersing thousands of tiny air bubbles that produce a champagne effect in the water. On contact with the skin these bubbles create a relaxing and invigorating ‘tingle’ that helps sooth and relax the body. The pressure released creates a light soothing massage that is gentler than a Standard Jet.
Mini Jets are a quarter the size of a Standard Jet and are designed to deliver a flow of water and air through concentrated outlets. Positioned in clusters to focus on the lumbar region, the jet faceplate can be adjusted to vary water flow through the jet, delivering customised water intensity. This feature allows some, or all of the Mini Jets, to be turned up or down to suit individual needs. oakleysplumbing.co.nz | clearlite.co.nz 03 379 4750

The Decking
Revolution Low maintenance and cost effective, we talk to Jamie Barton of Niagara Timber about the latest in outdoor living, Composite Decking
Born from a desire to produce a decking product that was low maintenance, composite decking is changing the way we build, live and experience outdoor living. TimberTech are world leaders in the composite decking arena, and Niagara Timber are proud to be able to bring this revolutionary product to New Zealand. “With years of innovation TimberTech have refined their manufacturing process to produce a fantastic product that is defect free,” comments Jamie Barton of Niagara. “Their hardy wood/plastic decking combines recycled and virgin plastics, with aple and ak wood fibre, to create an unsurpassed product. Since JULY/AUGUST 2014
we began importing it in 2010, we have seen a steady increase in demand and appreciation of the high quality associated with this form of decking,” continues Jamie. As there is no sealing, staining or painting, ever required, it is no wonder this decking product is rapidly growing in popularity. “In our many coastal areas, traditional wood decking often fails to perform, however TimberTech composite decking will survive where wood won t. lus backed by a twenty five year warranty, our homeowners have added peace of mind when it comes to performance. No matter where they live!” shares Jamie.
HOW IS IT MADE?
Wood Plastics Composite (WPC) decking is a combination of plastic and wood fibre, and manufactured via an extrusion process. Simply put, all the ingredients (including colours) are placed in a large hopper mixed up, cooked and pressed out to the desired profile.

Terrain - Brown Oak
Across two ranges, Terrain and elia oard, there is a profile suited to every home and outdoor area – no matter what your aesthetic or design. Terrain – A luxurious decking, capped with hardy polymer shell, featuring a fully protected variegated surface that won’t trap dirt or dust. Available in two colours, Brown Oak or Silver Maple.
ReliaBoard - Grey
NO SEALING, STAINING OR PAINTING, EVER REQUIRED, IT IS NO WONDER THIS DECKING PRODUCT IS RAPIDLY GROWING IN POPULARITY
ReliaBoard – Durable and low maintenance with a stylish grey finish, this range is designed to weather over time. Available in Grey and competitively priced. With installation time able to be reduced by 40%, when compared to a traditional timber deck, creating the quintessential Kiwi backyard is becoming easier than ever. It is also becoming more family friendly. “Edge grooved planks are available in both the ReliaBoard and Terrain ranges for no extra cost,” comments Jamie. “This allows special hidden fasteners to be used, leaving the deck surface, screw free.” And ultimately creating a smooth surface on which to live. Plus as TimberTech composite decking won’t crack, rot or split, wood splinters are becoming a thing of the past – allowing babies and bare feet of all sizes to walk around in splinter free bliss. So if you are looking for a decking solution that is easy to install and will look great for years to come, TimberTech could be the deck for you. timbertech.net.nz | 0800 88 33 25 niagara.net.nz

rebuild
FOUR
seasons in ONE day Silvia Tavares discusses creating a liveable city through microclimate design
Comfortable, pleasant and lively city streets attract people, and people mean better business. So, if our rebuilt Central City is to attract people, then architects and urban designers must consider how to make the streets and spaces not only pedestrian-friendly but microclimatefriendly. It will be too late to think about this once the buildings along the streets have been approved, the concrete poured, and the sheet glass fi ed. The rebuild of the Central City is underway – we have a blueprint, developers are releasing plans for new projects, a pedestrian-friendly transport plan has been released, and the City Council is committed to realising the collective vision of a liveable city that was JULY/AUGUST 2014
expressed through ‘Share an Idea’. But have we considered how to make our public streets and spaces attractive, in a city where there can be four seasons in one day? Cantabrians are very aware of how local patterns of wind, shelter, sun and shade shape the way we use the city. Before the earthquakes, favoured locations such as the west facing ‘Strip’ on Oxford Terrace attracted crowds willing to linger and enjoy being outdoors. These were prime sites for cafés and street life. Other parts of the CBD – such as Hereford Street – were known to be windy and shady, and were seen as places to hurry through. So what are some of the key lessons? And are the proposals for
the rebuild taking this local knowledge about the city, and it s climate, sufficiently into account? I have interviewed 86 Christchurch residents over months, to find out how they adapt to the local microclimate, what types of urban settings they find most attractive and comfortable, and how to ensure that the new city achieves the qualities we most enjoy. Interestingly, I found that Cantabrians, young and old, relate the way they use the city to our distinctive regional lifestyle. We think of ourselves as outdoor people, and given the choice will spend a notable portion of our time outdoors in urban spaces. But we are sensitive to the type of setting and the urban comfort it offers.
rebuild
Young people are least concerned about microclimate, with more of an interest in being in places where ‘the action is’ and being close to other people. By contrast, I found that older people and families look for places with greenery and sheltered places to sit where they can soak up the atmosphere without necessarily being part of the crowd. They actively avoid the colder and windier streets and search for peaceful environments. So given these insights how well are the proposals for the Central City shaping up to deliver attractive urban streets and spaces At first glance, the local climate appears to have been an afterthought. Images in the media of proposed developments are dominated by hard edged buildings, bare open paved areas and narrow alleys. The Central City Blueprint includes a green frame, but there is doubt over how ‘green’ this will be and what type of landscape it will provide at street level. One of the most striking aspects of the transitional stage of the recovery has
been the success of the Re:START in drawing people into the broken city. According to the people I interviewed, the feature that makes Re:START most appealing has been the way the containers create sheltered courtyards, with all day sun, attractive planting and meeting areas. Will the rebuilt Cashel Street be as attractive to people? Will there be equally sheltered, sunny and colourful courtyards in the new precincts and private developments? Have the designers and developers maximised on sun and shade and shelter? Christchurch needs every piece of help it can get, to attract people back in from the air-conditioned suburban malls. It is vital that knowledge about how Cantabrians respond to our microclimate is used to make a new Central City that is attractive to local people, with interesting, green, sunny and sheltered streets and open spaces designed for all ages and lifestyles.

colour masterclass
Practical COLOUR Kitchens are a vital part of our living. They are functional working spaces where the majority of us spend much of our time, preparing food, cooking and conversing with our family and friends. So it is little wonder that we are tending to make our kitchens slightly less formal and more inviting. Opting for colours with a feeling of fun and that have movement to them. Adding interactive features such as Resene Write-on Wall Paint or Resene Blackboard Paint for dinner menus, reminders and family games also helps to create a functional kitchen that is bursting with character, so the whole family feels drawn to this inviting homely space. New trends are emerging and making their mark on our cooking spaces in unexpected and quirky ways. Of course we are still seeing our clean white on white contemporary designs and our much loved dramatic splashbacks in daringly bold and bright colours but they are starting to slowly take a back seat. This year it’s all about splashes of colour! Be it coloured cabinetry, coloured pantry inners, or even bold feature shelving. It’s a fun and unique way to add colour into your home particularly if you’re not big on using feature walls or you’re a little intimidated by a bold splashback. Not all kitchens have to be sterile and drab; they are now becoming well thought out, colourful statement spaces within our homes, which are even taking centre stage as the main feature in open home living. resene.co.nz | 0800 RESENE

Feature walls don’t have to be limited to the bedroom or living space, and nor do they need to cover a vast area. Wanting to add a little something different to her hallway, abode reader Sam Streeter made the bold decision to wallpaper a small, flat wall in her hallway. ith the main entrance to her home opening into the hallway, the visual impact is now one of personality and interest. Wallpapering need not be daunting, all you need is a little bit of patience and time. Start by cleaning and preparing the wall by removing any old paper and repairing imperfections. Once the wall is sanded, clean and dry, brush with a liberal cost of Shur-Stik wallpaper size and allow to dry. This will make it much easier to position the wallpaper when hanging. Using the level and pencil, mark out a vertical line against which you can hang your first strip of wallpaper. f you are using a patterned wallpaper start in the middle of the space and work out to the edge. Where’s the Humanity? Darren O’Neil offers up his taxes for the greater good
I want to know why some people got it and others didn’t it? Our city is broken into pockets of anguish and we need to do something about it. Imagine three and half years on, you are still waiting for assistance. Well for pockets of Christchurch, that is exactly what is happening. There are people living in the most appalling circumstances, they have faced three years of hard-ship, with more to come and all we are doing for them is banding them about on the news when their houses flood. A disruptive and ongoing negative impact of the extensive damage caused by the quakes. Don’t get me wrong, John Key and his government acted fast in the days, hours and weeks following the quakes, but how come we appear to have got to a point and then stopped? Why did some people get government money and others didn’t? The solution for these people is not simply to pack up and move – how can they? They are trapped; as for many what they have left is all they have. Wet, damp, cold, damaged, or not, their home is still their home and selling it isn’t going to return the investment price it once was. While I can appreciate the Council is working towards solutions, they just need to get out there and bloody do it. The proposal of a temporary community, in which we move those still affected into a temporary housing area for two years – is bullshit. It leaves them with a temporary home, and no
JULY/AUGUST 2014
kind of financial gain or assistance to go towards helping them start again. Surely this ‘solution’ was a joke made by a council member who is far too out of touch with these people’s plight. No single solution is going to satisfy everyone, but surely the only way is to invest government dollars, pay people out and allow them to make a new start. When we consider the living conditions and the mental and physical stress these people are experiencing it is the only humane thing to do. It is stressful enough living in Christchurch as it is – navigating road works, battling traffic and facing daily reminders of the quakes through empty building sites, construction and rubble – without having to go home to unhealthy, broken, flooded living environments. Imagine being worried every time it rains that your house will flood. I don’t mind my taxes going towards aiding these people. And I am sure the rest of the country wouldn’t either. We need to be drawing a line in the sand, naming these areas, and houses, red-zones and paying people out. We need to tidy up what is left. There is too much talking and not enough action. There are desperate people in our own backyard and we are letting it happen – it is not acceptable. oneil.co.nz | 03 355 6065
