PETS CORNER - Pet Parasites The Truth About Risks…

& how to prevent…..

Do you worm and flea treat your dog or cat regularly?

If not, you could be leaving them and you at some quite serious risks. One pile of poo could contain literally millions of eggs and worms which can be passed to humans and replicate in your dog to cause fatal health conditions.

Round worms – Dogs can pick up round worm from the general environment picking up items that have been around other dog’s faeces and also from other hosts like birds and rats etc.

They feed off the content of the dog’s gut and can cause diarrhoea and weight loss. Transmission to humans is not common but not impossible and can cause blindness.

Tapeworm – Tapeworms again can be transmitted in a similar way to the round worm through faeces or an intermediate host including through fleas, the commonest way that cats get tapeworm. Symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhoea, increased licking of the rear end or a pet scooting their bottoms along the floor. However, a pet may show no signs

of carrying the worm at all other than possibly small rice grain like eggs in the faeces. If transmitted to humans’ tapeworms can travel through the body and can cause internal cysts and infections.

Lung worm – There have now been cases in the Chesterfield area of this killer parasite. It is passed to dogs generally by slugs and snails which can be small and consumed through drinking contaminated water. They inhabit the heart and pulmonary arteries and can cause serious and numerous symptoms including weight loss, coughing, bleeding, seizures and death.

While not passed to humans this parasite is very serious for your pet.

A number of other common worms exist such as hookworm and whipworm with similar transmission and symptoms.

Fleas – The most prolific and common of parasites not just in the summer but all year round. The sobering fact about fleas in pets if you find them is that statistically at any one time only 5% of fleas live on the animal, leaving 95% to live in the general home environment and indeed on you. Fleas will cause inching and scratching by pets and you.

In severe cases fleas can also cause an allergic dermatitis and

especially in younger or smaller animals, anaemia.

Ticks – Ticks can be passed from animals to animal and human by the ticks falling or jumping off and lying in wait and jumping back onto another host. Importantly ticks are increasingly passing diseases such as Lyme’s disease which can again be very serious for animals and indeed humans.

While all this sounds like a parasitic minefield all are easily prevented or treated with very effective treatment from your vet. There are lots of options and don’t be tempted to go for off the shelf cheap options. Talk to your vet and ensure you protect yourself and your beloved pet with regular full spectrum treatments and enjoy the summer with your pet - pest free!

Clowne In Bloom…

CLOWNE IN BLOOM has bagged a share of a £11.5 million carrier bag charge fund We are delighted to announce we have bagged £12,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative, which saw grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects.

Eight million shoppers voted in stores up and down the country. And it can now be revealed that Clowne in Bloom has been awarded £12,000.

The results have been announced and we will now begin work on bringing our project to life.

Clowne in Bloom say 12,000 Thank You’s to everyone who supported us and Voted for our project. With the money we will be improving the environment around our town with more planting and bulbs. Our annual Well Dressing will take place on 23 July this year.

But the main part of our work for this year, supported by the Tesco funding , will see us working with volunteers and Groundwork and Bolsover District Council to improve our local Linear Park – a former rail line.

Changes to access are planned here and we want more families to get involved. We will see woodland adventure play equipment – including a wood play train

and more native UK planting and improved signs telling the local rail and coal history stories and showcasing the wildlife found on the park. We work here with other volunteers from Friends of Clowne and Clowne Wildlife and look for new faces to join us. As well as regular clean up days three Family events are taking place - on Sunday 24 April we held an activity and involvement day, on Sunday 24 July (including have-a-go at well dressing) and Sunday 30 October (harvest and Halloween.)

Greg Lindley, Chair of Clowne in Bloom said :”The catalyst of this extra funding is going to push us to change how we work together, how we involve more people and how we see the park as a community- it has been a forgotten asset for the town and change is in the air for 2016. This has come at a point when a number of things are changing- especially the removal of an old north/south footbridge that Derbyshire CC are replacing with a ramp, enabling wheelchair access here for the first time in 20 years. The more people that use the park the better and the more people will understand and care for our environment.”

Caroline Silke, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response of our customers and the feedback has been brilliant.

“We can’t wait to see the money being put to use bringing these projects to life.

“Nominations for the next round of the initiative will open in April and we look forward to helping a further round of groups and projects bag their share of the bag charge fund.”

Voting ran in store from 27 February until 6 March – with customers choosing which group they’d like to get the top award using a token given to them at the check-out in store.

Tesco estimated that around eight million votes were cast in stores across the UK. Groundwork’s national chief executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “We have been delighted to have been involved in the Bags of Help project.

“It has been wonderful to follow the projects through the application process to the final announcement.

“This is money which will go directly back into the communities up and down the country creating places to meet people, be active, play or simply relax. This initiative is really putting something back into the local environment, transforming greenspaces and helping the community at a grass-roots level.”

Nominations and applications for the next round of Bags of Help funding will open on April 18. As well as applying direct, suggestions for projects can also be nominated by people living locally.
