On a very positive note for the club Both rides are attracting more and more interest - our last weds ride attracted thirteen bikes not too bad for late October; and we have gained Hi All some fantastic new members And welcome to our November again over the last few months with another in the pipeline that newsletter. Look out for our regular Despite the somewhat variable updates re ride outs on our weather we have managed a fair Facebook pages, the website few ride outs on both Wednesday and our messenger ‘ride outs’ and Sunday and for the majority group (not a member let me have pretty much dodged most know and I will add you) these give you up to date info on what's of the rain lol coming up each week. We will continue weather permitting with the Sunday rides Membership is growing steadily and I look forward to meeting our newer members and riding with you throughout the rest of the year (or next season if your bike is in bed) - so a huge welcome and if I haven’t met you yet I look forward to doing so in the near future and hope that you will interact with me by sending anything you think might be of interest to your fellow members be it places you have visited (pictures essential please), kit or gadgets you think are great or particularly useful, a test ride you may have taken and in fact anything bike related really! It’s doubtful Rich and I will manage to make all the socials and ride outs (we still have youngish boys at home) so essential that you all take great pics and send me

updates so that I can pass on to all our members. I hope you enjoy our November offering - Great coverage of our ride outs, natter nights, eat outs and trips since September, the usual words of wisdom and info from our Director, a feature on the tremendous 100,000 HOG mileage achieved by John, two recommendations from Bryan, details of our upcoming AGM which I hope you will all attend, Manoj is going for the Iron Hog Challenge and looking for intrepid riders to join him, Simon’s Macky’s 500 (I personally can’t wait for this one!), a few other interesting items that have slipped my mind and a few adverts from members. If you run a business and would like to include yourself in our advertising section please drop me a line with copy or details and I will be happy to design something appropriate and would ask only a small one off donation to Chapter funds of £10 for the year (minimum four issues). And finally… and I do repeat myself regularly lol, I am by no means a petrol head but do love my bikes and am extremely passionate about riding and the whole ethos of the Harley Owners Group - do please say hello and introduce yourselves to us if we pass at Harleyworld or Matlock etc and if you haven’t done so already send me a pic of yourself, your partner/pillion if you have one and your ride so that we can all see who’s who. The

DIRECTOR’s cut……

Chromies, Welcome to the end of another biking year (well not as far as the calendar is concerned but our Chapter year is closing fast). It's been a very busy one for our road crew. Nearly every Wednesday and Sunday they have been riding around the roads of our fair country followed by the keen, curious or just got nothing else to do mob that we call our chapter. We have also had a few non members coming along, which has bought its own benefits. A couple of them have moved to the Harley side because of their experience with us. Top job Road Crew. We could not exist without you. That brings me to another point. How do we exist as a chapter? Well it doesn't happen on its own. I am lucky to have a keen group of officers who buckle down and get things done, most of the time without me having to put my oar in. That is exactly how it should be in my mind, but without the members stepping up and filling these roles then we would be floundering as much as our parliament is with Brexit and running the country. they are showing us what happens if the

members are divided, don't talk to each other like adults, don't respect each others ideas and thoughts and just bluster on pushing everyone else to the wayside. We all have to embrace each other. We are all in the chapter for the same reason, to ride and have fun so lets keep it that way. I have said, many times, that every officer is in their role voluntarily, and long may it stay that way. Life gets difficult when someone wishes to step down from their role and there is no-one else to take it on. the only way forward is for another officer to take on extra responsibilities. Whilst this is admirable it is not ideal as each shared role becomes diluted. I would much prefer that each role was held by one person which gives them time to concentrate on what they need to do and gives the other officers more time to lend a hand if its required. We have one role coming up at the AGM (more later) and despite sending an email to ALL members, only one has currently offered to 'give it a go'. Well that's probably the nature of things but I would like to encourage you to step up and try. You would never be left floundering. Help would always be available but you never know, if you try you may just find you enjoy it!! I often get asked 'what do I get for being a member?'. Well apart form the kudos, friendship, camaraderie and discounts, you get what you put in. The more you put in, the more you reap the benefits.

held at The Olde House, Newbold, Chesterfield, S40 4RN, on Thursday 28th November and will start at 8pm prompt. You will be able to complete your 2020 membership form and pay your fees on the night as well as picking up some merchandise should you wish to. If you want to say something, complain about something, congratulate someone/thing, offer to be considered for an officers role etc. but cannot get to the meeting then please let me know. You all have my contact details and my email is director@chromehill.co.uk We are getting more chapters wanting to join up with us on ride outs.. Our Road Crew will be working alongside them to try to get a few in the calendar for next year so don't forget to keep checking on our website for upcoming events (and on Facebook). I think this is excellent news and should be encouraged. We had a great ride with the Fenlanders and hope other chapters will be as encouraging as they were. If you have any ideas about places to visit on a ride out, please let us know either through email, Facebook or by chatting, yes chatting to us. A dying art I know but someone has to keep it alive.

Finally (who said thank god?) I would like to thank each and everyone of you, the members, for being what you are. Without you our chapter would not exist. Here's to an great 2020 for all Chromies, new and old and those wannabe Chromies who probably More details of the officers roles don't even realise they want to be that could be fulfilled by you will members yet. Bring it on !!!!!!!!!!!! be coming out in an email before Director D the AGM, so watch out for it and please give it some consideration. The AGM will be

One of our Chapter Officers is standing down.

Fancy becoming a Chrome Hill Chapter Officer? Our esteemed Activities Officer, Viv, would like to 6 pass on the batten at the next AGM. She is also our Treasurer and is happy to continue as such but feels she cannot give the Activities role all she thinks it should be. Viv feels that the role should be handled by someone with a better knowledge of Chesterfield and the surrounding area and also lives closer than we do. Getting to these places to check them out, book

rooms etc. becomes really difficult when you have to allow an hour and a half just to get there and back. Viv has asked for the Officers role to be offered to all so she can concentrate on her other role as Treasurer.

Taking on the role of Activities Officer comprises organising any Chapter activity that has been agreed by the Chapter Officers. The person who takes it on would need to be able to book meeting rooms, arrange meals at restaurants, Christmas Party venue and places, weekend away accommodation and details to name just a few

possibilities. The ride outs are handled by the Road captains so they do not come under the remit of the Activities Officer, although, if approached by a RC, they may be asked to book meal places at a destination etc. Viv will happily pass on all her knowledge of the role to the successful applicant and all of the current Chapter Officers will help when they can. If you would like to be considered for this role then please email me. In the event of more than one applicant then a vote will take place at the AGM.

CHROMIES RECOMMEND Huge thanks to Bryan - long time HOG and Chapter member - for his two recommendations I like to know the bikes tyre pressures at ok. Here’s a couple of pics of the tyre pressure monitor I have on the Harley. First pic is of the screen. It shows pressures front and rear also the temperature. It’s recharged every 3 months lush via a small usb cable. You set alarm parameters for pressure and temperature. I’ve checked it against my calibrated pressure gauge and it spot on. The pressure sensor goes on the valve instead of a dust cap. no rebalancing needed. A simple locking nut stops it being unscrewed. Batteries need replacing every two years. About £30 from the internet.

7 recommend you go and see him. https://ingmans.co.uk/shoerepairs

My Daytona boots had done about 40,000 miles. They kept my feet warm and dry but they needed some TLC. My neighbour Andy Ingram runs Ingrams shoe shop in

chesterfield. He renovated them and made them shine again. If you’ve got a pair of boots (or shoes) that need some work I

IRON HOG CHALLENGE 2020 EVENTS Hello Dear Chapter Members, I am looking for taking on the iron Hog challenge run in 2020. If there is some one interested in taking the challenge along with me, please let me know. My tel is 07723376123 or email mkpillai1966@gmail.com... It is indeed an unique opportunity to place your name in the elite list of Iron Hog listing. It is usually a 48 hours challenge but can additionaly achieve upto to 14 hours more if the right effort is put in. The challenge is to visit minimum 4 Harley offices strategically placed around the country, with 48 hours (can do more too). As easy it may sound, a foreword, it is NOT EASY...but that is the challenge, in't it? Our Director Derek Tate is an Iron Hog and you can get more information from him, if you want. One of those natter nights will be the best time, I suppose.

November 2019

LOTS OF SMILES FOR JOHN BEEVERS 100,000 HARLEY MILES Way back in 2005 I just happened to be looking around the bikes in Harleyworld with a friend of mine who was interested in buying one. I had been riding since 1967 but thought that my road riding days were behind me, after all I had sampled the dying days of the British motorcycle industry, and the rise of the mighty Japanese motor empire. I had owned BSA, Norton, Velocette and Vincent, followed by various Hondas and Kawasaki’s. I had probably covered in excess of 150,000 miles over a 35-year period and dwindled down to a couple of trials bikes to potter about on, and on which my 2 sons had learned the basics of riding. However there just happened to be a very nice Road King in the shop and the sun was shining, a very dangerous combination indeed! It didn’t take long to work out that we, the wife and I, could probably enjoy a few excursions to far off places like Matlock Bath (we live in Chesterfield), and other similar exotic locations so the bike was duly purchased. Within days we set off to Matlock

First Harley Bath as planned, all of 8 miles

from home, and pulled up for some welcome refreshments Whilst we were idling our time

He did, and that, as they say, is how it all started. The next step was to join the local Chapter and get kitted up with the relevant pins and patches.

First Ultra away looking at the bikes either side of the Road King, we were approached by two guys in Harley riding gear who obviously wanted to strike up a conversation and opened up with “Have you had the Harley long? How far have you been on it? Have you joined Peak Riders yet?” (Some newer members may have to look in the history books for that one). “Well” said I, “we’ve had it for a week now and we were thinking

Second Ultra we might get to Castleton and places like that eventually. By the way what’s Peak Riders and what do they do?” The two guys in question, Chris Robbins and Royce Marper, looked at each other and smiled. “Peak Riders is the local HOG Chapter and we are 2 of the early members, we’ve just come back from the European HOG rally in Monte Gordo in Portugal” Chris said, “I’ve done a video of the trip, I’ll send you a copy”.

Third Ultra

We also registered for the available HOG benefits and tasks, the relevant one for this article being the Mileage Programme. This programme rewards members for achieving various mileage increments, don’t get too excited we are talking about a pin and a patch delivered in an envelope with a comp slip! The real benefit to this programme is the sense of riding achievement and the creation of a whole load of memories, of places visited and people met at various Rallies and other destinations. The Road King was now pressed into service on a more serious scale as Matlock Bath and the like, nice as they are, didn’t have the same appeal as some of the places now introduced through friend’s video’s and the various HOG magazines. During the year we owned the bike we covered 10,000 miles and achieved the first pin and patch.

Email - editor@chromehill.co.uk We attended our first RalliesCider Rally (Bridgewater Chapter, Somerset), Leather Britches (Peak Riders), and Iron Horse (St Leger Chapter, Doncaster).

Cider Rally

Belgium

Well, I mentioned this to Patrick, the Dealer Principal at Harleyworld, and he said that if I placed an order, we could use the shop demonstrator for the Aviemore trip. That was my arm twisted into submission. It was now nearing the end of the 2006 season and the new bike was run in on various Chapter Sunday and Wednesday rides. 2007 season dawned, and by now the mileage thing was becoming second nature. During this year we did a second trip to Belgium, Cider Rally, Iron Horse, Peak Riders and Aviemore, by now the mileage was really clocking up! We did our first European Rally, a 16-day trip to Fuengirola in Southern Spain, a trip which covered in excess of 3600 miles. What great memories! 2008 saw another European

recce’s for Chapter Sunday rides. Talk about getting involved! The next couple of years were spent doing more of the same, by which time we had got the awards for 25000 and 40000 miles. Then disaster struck………. The beloved Ultra, which by this time had covered 40,000 miles, was T-boned from a side road by a bike blind motorist and written off. This was in 2011 and we had now covered 50,000 miles in total on the two bikes. Whilst recovering from relatively minor injuries, fate played a hand causing Harleyworld to take a low mileage Ultra in part exchange just as I received my insurance pay-out. Furthermore, this bike was in the white and blue combination that had become our trademark colours! Had to be bought.

18 The first trip abroad took place, a long weekend to Ostend in Belgium. We also planned to attend our first Thunder in the Glens Rally (Dunedin Chapter, Edinburgh). This Rally is held in Aviemore on August Bank Holiday weekend and is one of the largest in Europe. The Saturday ride out can have as many as 2000 bikes and thousands of locals line the route, many with picnics and BBQ’s, to watch the bikes go past. I decide the bike needed a service about a month before the event and Harleyworld loaned me an Ultra to get home, well that was the start of another chapter. Having sampled the rear armchair, Cilla said something like,” This is very comfortable, can we get one to go to Aviemore on?”

St Tropez Rally come and go, this time in Port Grimaud near St Tropez in the south of France.

Scotland Orkney

Mablethorpe Millau Viaduct

We did a couple of Rallies in the UK, but also many long weekend trips and holiday trips with friends. By this time, I had been a Road Captain for a couple of years and a fair bit of time was spent doing

Estoril

Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/chromehill.chapter/

November 2019 In 2016 we traded in for our third Ultra, this time a newly introduced Milwaukee 8 model, and continued onwards towards the 100,000mile target which we achieved in August this year (2019). Time doesn’t stand still unfortunately, and we are

Andorra So off we went again, full of enthusiasm for further adventures. This second Ultra covered another 30,000 miles visiting several more rallies, Sunday Chapter rides and long week-end trips with the Chapter and

McDonalds

weekends away with friends. This bike also did a couple of tours of Spain and also a couple of tours in Portugal

Brittany heading back towards our original aspiration of Sunday trips out for lunch and back if the weather is OK! What I would like to point out to the readers of this article is that this project was started when I was already in my mid-fifties, still working at running a family business, and parking the bike up for several months each winter.

It’s been a great adventure and one which I can heartily recommend to anyone starting out with the new Chrome Hill chapter. Join the HOG Mileage Programme and see where it takes you. Orkney. Scotland inc. Thunder in the Glens rally (6 times). Most of England and Wales. Tour of the coast of Ireland. Belgium twice. Holland. France 3 times. Spain 5 times. Portugal twice. Hundreds of Sunday and Wednesday rideouts.

HOGS Around the Rock Rally

The Jersey “HOGs around the Rock” returns in September 2020. This is a biennial event that is targeted at the discerning HOG member who likes a little comfort and the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy a few days in a unique location. Jersey is a small island (9 miles by 5 miles) with around 350 miles of roads and country lanes that are often narrow and winding. Speed is not something that you can push on the island roads but then why would you when you either have lovely sea vistas or countryside to look at. With a population of just over 100,000, a vibrant Finance industry which means that accommodation is usually very good and the restaurants are both plentiful and of superior quality. Being surrounded by sea means that seafood is a norm, but those meat eaters can still get their teeth into great steaks. The HOGs around the Rock rally will be a boutique event and as such you’ll thoroughly enjoy yourself and get to know everyone that attends. The rally will be based upon riding around the island taking in some of the island’s unique history. Several opportunities will be available to
