Barlborough Heristage Centre…

Barlborough Heritage Centre pays Andre produced several books about life in Barlborough and was tribute to local historian and photographer Andre Bradley. Andre often seen walking around the village with his camera at was born in Killamarsh 6th the ready. He also 0ctober 1939 commissioned a set of and sadly plates celebrating many passed away on local coal mines which New Years Eve had existed over the years. having lived in Mining played a big part Barlborough for in Andre’s life and he 73 years. Andre’s produced books about interest in the local collieries which Barlborough stems will also be on display. from his family Barlborough Heritage having been Centre will be residents for over exhibiting many A3 300 years. PETS CORNER - Caring For Your Dog In Winter…

Well it appears winter is finally upon on us and as so many articles are written about dogs in hot cars in summer I thought it was worth writing one about some of the things to think about in winter as well.

Cold - The first obvious peril of winter as for all of us is the cold. Some dogs will feel the cold much more than others. If you have a Bernese Mountain dog it’s probably safe to say on your average walk they won’t need a coat on. However, if you have a Lurcher or a Chihuahua it is worth investing in coat to help keep them warm when out and about.

Also in very cold weather dog’s paws can get frost bite as well as irritated by the salt so if you are a fashion follower some doggy boots or if not some paw cream can be inexpensive and well worth using.

As well as considering the cold on walks consider it when you put your dogs in the garden or yard for any length of time.

Like humans’ dogs can become

hypothermic and at worst this can cause death.

Don’t shut them out for long periods of time without warmth or shelter.

Also think about where your dog sleeps and ensure they aren’t in cold drafts and that overnight the temperature doesn’t drop too low where they sleep.

Road salt – It has become more commonly known but road salt often used on pavements as well as road is in fact toxic to dogs. Not necessarily by walking on it, although this can cause irritation, but by licking off when they get home. If grit and salt has been used and your dog has been walking on it is worth just giving their feet a rinse and towel to get it off when they get home.

Anti-Freeze – This solution can be fatal to all animals including dogs. If you are filling your car, see others doing the same or have bottles around be extremely careful. If you think at any time your dog has consumed anti-freeze don’t delay take it straight to the vet.

Bulbs – On the subject of poisons as we all wait for the spring flowers to come through beware of your dog digging the bulbs up as they see the first shoots. Many flower bulbs while fun to play with are entirely poisonous to dogs if they eat them.

Ice – Dogs aren’t great at ice skating so be careful when they are off leash near ponds. The won’t tell the difference between the solid ground and the thin layer of ice on the water.

The can run out and come unstuck very quickly and the temperature of water at this time of year can very quickly cause shock and death in a dog and indeed a human who attempts to go out to rescue them.

Leap for #ChallengeDerbyshire…

2016 is a leap year so employers will benefit from an extra days work from their employees on Monday 29th February at no extra cost. In light of this, the three charities that make up #ChallengeDerbyshire; Ashgate Hospicecare, Blythe House Hospice and Helen’s Trust, are asking businesses to offer their staff an opportunity to make a donation in exchange for an extra days holiday.

Markovitz Chief Executive, Rob Turner, was the first to sign up. He said: “Our staff work hard every year so when #ChallengeDerbyshire asked us to offer them a days holiday in exchange for a donation, I couldn’t say no. Our staff are paid monthly so we won’t be paying them any more in February with it being a leap year so it doesn’t actually cost us anything.

We have asked staff to donate 50% of a day’s salary and they can take their extra day’s holiday at any time

throughout the year. We hope this will raise a lot of money for these three local charities who really need our support.”

Died: September 14, 1982 Her Monaco father, the son of Irish immigrants, was an athlete and self-made millionaire and Kelly was brought up in high Philadelphia style. She attended the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where her graduation performance was in The Philadelphia Story. Her first acting roles were on stage and she made her Broadway debut in Strindberg’s The Father, alongside Raymond Massey. She was Gary Cooper’s choice for her first starring role, as his demure Quaker bride in High Noon (1952). As with many of her later films, rumors were rife of an on-set affair between Kelly and her leading man.

Meanwhile, Kelly had landed a seven-year contract with MGM, her first film being the supporting role in Mogambo (1953), with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner, for which she won an Oscar nomination. Oddly, her one Oscar-winning role was a non-glamorous one in The Country Girl (1954), where she played the long-suffering wife of an alcoholic has-been actor, Bong Crosby. In 1956, she played the haughty rich girl in the delightful MGM musical High

Society (1956), an update of the Philadelphia Story.

But it was the pairing with director Alfred Hitchcock that made Kelly truly memorable.

One of a series of signature blonde actresses with whom Hitchcock did some of his best work, Kelly played the beautiful, vulnerable, yet ambiguous heroine in Dial M for Murder (1954), the victim of husband Ray Milland’s devious plotting. Next, Hitchcock cast her with James Stewart in the gripping Rear Window (1954). Stewart played the part of a news photographer encased in plaster, who risks both his own and his girlfriend’s (Kelly) life investigating what he believes to be a murder.

Kelly’s final outing for Hitchcock was yet another alluring and equivocal role, flirting with and entrapping Cary Grant’s retired jewel thief in the romantic comedy To Catch a Thief (1956). The chemistry between the stars was such that Kelly’s future husband did his best to bury the finished film.

In 1955, Kelly met Prince With her classically Rainer of beautiful feature, Grace Monaco when Kelly epitomized the she led the US Hollywood goddess! delegation at the Cannes Film Festival. She married his a year later in a sumptuous ceremony in Monaco Cathedral. From the on she devoted her life to creating the role of gracious and immaculate princess consort.

The occasional offers of a starring role - as the lead in Hitchcock’s Marnie in 1962, for instance - were firmly rejected. In 1982, at the age of 52, Kelly had a stroke at the wheel of her car on a precipitous mountain road and died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

CHESTERFIELD PANTHERS RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB Established in 1919, Chesterfield Rugby club has been an integral part of Chesterfield sporting life and local history ever since. We have now moved to a brand new purpose built complex at 2012 Dunston Road, Chesterfield, S41 9BF, with a completely new clubhouse, pitches and many training facilities.

We are recruiting for the tag/mini and junior teams from girls and boys aged between 6 up to 19 years old. Chesterfield is renowned for being open and friendly across all of Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire, and why we have strong tag/mini/junior sections within the club.

Therefore, if you are in school years from 4 to 13, and would like to play rugby, whether you have or have not done so before, please contact us. Join us as part of a team, make friends, have fun and keep fit. We started the new season on Sunday 1st September, but train midweek (different times for teams), and Sundays 10am to 12am, up to May 2014.
