Backup Advice and Services What would happen if your PC or server stopped working? Are all your important documents backed-up? Are you 100% sure they can be recovered from the last backup you took? When did you last test it? How quickly do you need to be up and running? Can you get PCs, servers and your network up and running within a timescale that fits your business? Too often, action is only taken after a failure of a piece of hardware. By then, it is too late. No suitable backup strategy is in place and no contingency for hardware has been considered. Quad are frequently called to businesses that have lost months of work (and sometimes everything) because their plan was implemented but never tested. Check what you have in place today, as tomorrow you might need to implement it. A common oversight is that organisations do not have backups off site. Whilst the office building smoulders, and the fire brigade tell you it will be a week until you can safely get to your fire safe, you’ll wish you had a backup tape stored safely at a company like Quad. What to do Next...Get in touch! Quad, understand that different organisations have different requirements when it comes to support. Quad have years of experience and many sites installed, so we can tailor a solution to suit you.

The immediate increase in our energy bills following the announcement by one political leader that a vote for his party will mean fixed costs being applied by law if elected momentarily provided a glimpse behind the scenes of the relationships between big business and elected members of parliament. It also revealed how low some are prepared to stoop to secure power. The general public has been relentlessly victimised by the energy industry from the moment it was sold into private ownership. There has been no measurable benefit passed on to us from the sale of our publicly owned assets – most of which are now in the hands of overseas interests. Representations we would achieve greater choice and continued low prices as a consequence of greater competition can clearly be seen to be false. Legally binding agreements relating to targets for the pursuit of renewable energy resources are currently under close scrutiny from those with an ideological and/or economic interest in slowing progress. Budgets are being analysed and propaganda prepared in an attempt to find

ways of increasing profits for interested parties and reducing the scope and/or impact of their legal responsibility to reduce carbon emissions. In the meantime the planet we rely on for our continued existence is ruthlessly exploited in the pursuit of profit by a few, powerful corporations with the collusion of politicians. Those opposing it such as the Greenpeace activists recently arrested by the Putin government in Russia are being relentlessly targeted and criminalised in a variety of ways. The information emerging from various sources is we have no idea what the actual cost of oil and gas is at the point of purchase. Evidently it is not sufficiently large to reduce the numbers of private investor groups pursuing a place in the industry. If we look at the profits capable of being generated it is clear what motivates their interest. These figures do not include the financial information relating to all the other “bites of the cherry” achieved by distributors or energy brokers before it eventually gets to the public. The network is now so complex and multi layered that much is duplicated at great cost to the end user so, is it any

wonder the consumer is now paying so much for it as a percentage of our income? As winter approaches many on low, fixed incomes must be considering their shrinking options for keeping warm this year. News that the severe weather we experienced last winter hastened the deaths of those most vulnerable to energy price rises accompanies the details of how large that group is becoming. It makes for uncomfortable reading. It is a shameful thing that so many cannot afford to live a full, comfortable life because a few are so concentrated on how they can exploit the lack of adequate protection afforded by our elected representative. If you have a story to tell about how your life is being impacted by the cuts, corporate greed and/or mismanagement of public/ private services you can email me with them at

Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards 2013 Chesterfield’s very best food and drink establishments and producers were honoured at glittering awards ceremony hosted by TV chef and presenter Ainsley Harriott on Wednesday 30th October. 10 business and individuals across 11 categories were named as Chesterfield’s finest at the sell-out awards ceremony held at Chesterfield College’s Heart Space Building. Awards host Ainsley Harriott said: “It was amazing to see the passion felt by everyone in the room about the Food and Drink Awards. The evening brought the hospitality community together. The awards have also created a new standard in food which is very exciting.” He also added: “It’s inspiring to hear that Chesterfield College is training the next generation of chefs.” On the night Calabria restaurant took three of the titles including the prestigious Chef of the Year award which went to Nicholas McNerney. Calabria owner Vic Risorto said “We’re delighted with the wins, made all the more special for being at Chesterfield’s first ever Food and Drink Awards. The wins represent everything that Calabria prides itself on – great customer service, good food and atmosphere. We enjoy customer service and want to make people happy. It’s the ethos of the restaurant and the entire team. It’s as simple as that.” The Town’s first ever Food and Drink Awards were organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with Chesterfield College. More than 50 nominations were received across 11 categories and only 16 businesses and six individuals shortlisted for the awards. Amongst the award winners was W. Owner Charles Ferne, his wife and son – who all work on the market stall – accepted the award on the night. Winner of the Young Chef of the Year Award, Ryan Lee - from the Red Lion at the Peak Edge Hotel – commented “I started from the bottom as an apprentice,

Becky’s Movie Previews Now we’re getting towards the end of the year, we will start to see some contenders for the Oscars. There are some great films to see at the cinema this month so let’s take a look. So we’ve reached the end of the year, it’s gone by so fast! There’s been some fantastic films released this year and there’s still a month left to go. So take a look and I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Coming Soon…

What better way to end the year than with a Disney movie. We find ourselves in the kingdom of Arendelle where there are two princesses, Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell). Elsa is set to become Queen and also possesses the power to create snow and ice. She has been suppressing these powers ever since a traumatic event years before involving her sister.

Then during her July coronation to be Queen she lets her powers get out of control which triggers an eternal winter that freezes the entire kingdom. It’s now up to Anna to find Elsa, who’s gone into hiding, to save Arendelle from being frozen forever. Anna also has the help of a rugged mountain man, Kristoff (Glee’s Jonathan Goff), his reindeer sidekick Sven and a comical snowman called Olaf (Josh Gad). They must encounter mystical rolls, Everest-like extremes and magic around every corner in a race to find Elsa and save the kingdom before it’s too late. Release date: 06.12.13

Homefront Starring British action star Jason Statham comes a crime-thriller which has been adapted from a novel of the same name by Sylvester Stallone, who has been Oscar nominated for his screenplays (Rocky). The film also stars James Franco (127 hours, Spider-man), Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands, Little Women) and Kate Bosworth (Blue Crush, 21). Statham plays Phil Broker, a former drug enforcement agent who moves off the grid with his daughter to a seemingly quiet backwater country town to escape his troubled past. As anyone would expect,

things soon change and Broker’s world is turned upside down when he discovers an underbelly of drugs and violence. Soon enough there’s a sociopathic kingpin, Gator Bodine (Franco) who puts Broker and his daughter in harm’s way that forces him back into his old life to save his family and the small town. The Christmas Candle And now comes a film that will definitely bring the festive spirit this year. Set in 1890 in the fictitious town of Gladbury, there is a legend about a special Christmas candle and that every 25 years an angel visits the candle maker and bestows a miracle on one candle and whoever lights it has their miracle come true on Christmas Eve. However, shortly after the arrival of the new pastor, David Richmond, it goes missing. With the villagers all looking to him to find them a new miracle, he try's to bring them all into the electric age with not much success. Even though he struggles he does find an ally in the form of feisty villager Emily Barstow (Samantha Barks). With a mix of traditions and progression coming

together there is sure to be some surprises around the corner. It may not break any new ground as far as Christmas films go but it should be enjoyable all the same. Also starring Hans Matheson (The Tudors, Clash of the Titans), Samantha Barks (Les Miserables) and Lesley Manville (A Christmas Carol). Release date: 13.12.13

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Coming from the 2004 smash hit, this needs no introduction. We have Adam McKay returning as director as well as Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin) as producer. The sequel is also written by Apatow and Will Ferrell who also stars again. After the 1970's brought prosperity to the Channel 4 news team, the group disbands and hits rock bottom until a 24 hour news channel is being put together and the group is recruited to join, and they take the channel by storm. With the usual antics from this crowd, dubbed the Frat pack, there are sure to be plenty of laughs. As well as Ferrell, also returning are Christina Applegate, Paul

Chesterfield 1st

Rudd and Steve Carell. There is a stigma here that all sequels are inferior to their originals. There will always be some truth in this as sequels can never be based on original concepts. Although there have been exceptions to this rule as well as others that have met their originals standard. It will be up to whoever watches it as to whether this will be one of them but with the demand and anticipation that there has been for this, I doubt it will fail to bring in the audiences. Release date: 18.12.13

Property News Colder Days Are Here As the temperature drops with the onset of winter, there are a few things landlords and tenants can do to minimise the risk of cold weather issues. Heating & Hot Water: To avoid frozen pipes, we always advise that heating and hot water systems that are water based, are kept on the minimum setting, so the pipes do not freeze and burst. A burst pipe in an apartment block can not only cause damage to your property, but can cause damage to properties below. Condensation: During the colder months, it is usual for people to try and dry their washing inside the property, using airers placed next to radiators. This is OK as long as the room is ventilated by opening a window a small amount. If the room is not ventilated, the moisture from the drying clothes will form condensation on the walls and windows, which will lead to black mould forming.

Landlord Tip: Be proactive at this time of year, and make sure your property is ready for winter. Tenants appreciate landlords who ensure their property is well insulated, and has heating and hot water systems that do not break down.

Tenant Tip: Take responsibility for your own actions at this time of year, and make sure you are careful not to cause damage to the property by being negligent. It is always better to work with your landlord if issues occur, and help them look after the property, as it may be your home for a while.

Boilers & Water Cylinders: Heating equipment will be used more over the next 4 months, so having an annual service at this time of year will ensure you are less likely to have an issue with a breakdown over the Christmas period, when you can’t get hold of a plumber. External Guttering & Pipes: Fix any leaking guttering and plastic pipes NOW, as once the temperature drops below freezing, the water leaking onto the pavement will turn to ice, and could become a slip hazard.

‘You ain’t heard nothing yet’ pay his ex-wife her maintenance, in a one man show he has called Alimony Tour Year One! Al Jolson’s famous words at the beginning of the first feature length talking movie, The Jazz Singer, of course. But just wait until you hear about some of the huge figures that have been paid out by divorcing celebrities who chose not to plump for the safety of a prenuptial agreement. Most recently, according to The Sunday Times’ Rich List, Dragon’s Den star Duncan Ballatyne’s fortune plummeted from £430 million to £85 million following his divorce without a prenup; Heather Mills won £24 million from Paul McCartney after a mere 4 year marriage; Reese Witherspoon, who earned $15 million a film, had to split her fortune 50/50 with her lower earning husband; Rosanne Barr lost $50 million after ignoring lawyers’ advice to sign a prenup; Madonna paid Guy Richie around $90 million; Steven Spielberg’s ‘close encounter’ with prenups saw his wife walking away with $100 million after a judge disregarded their prenuptial agreement invalid because it was written on a paper napkin and John Cleese said he would have to take to the road again at the age of 70 to

Michelle Cooper, partner and head of Graysons WE’s divorce and family department says “Maybe these figures are just a drop in the ocean for these celebrities, but for the rest of us, our pre-marital assets might be more precious to us and prenuptial agreements – which are on the increase at the moment – are a very popular way of protecting them. Whilst not legally binding in UK at present, prenups are usually accepted by the courts as proof of a couple’s intensions should they divorce. In fact the Law Commission looks set to give prenups the green light following a recent landmark case, Radmacher v Granatino, in which the UK Supreme Court accepted a prenup as evidence of their intentions – even though they weren’t married in UK and the prenup was written in Germany.” So, when ‘I do’ turns into ‘I don’t’, prenups offer an open and honest route to sorting out financial issues without turning an already difficult time into a nightmare. Michelle says “Graysons WE’s family law specialists can tailor prenuptial agreements to meet individual requirements, determining how possessions, from substantial property to the car, are dealt with. They are particularly useful for safeguarding future inheritance; protecting family assets and businesses – in fact

December Gardening December is usually a cold dark month and maybe a risk of snow , but there are still jobs that can be done weather permitting around the garden, in the greenhouse and in the home. · Leaving the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until the spring, will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems which can be then pruned in spring. · Gathering up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suffered from blackspot or rust this summer will reduce the chance of infection next year. Also remove leaves and debris from alpine beds and borders to discourage pests and diseases overwintering. · Move containers of shrubs or winter bedding plants into a sheltered spot; clustering them together helps protect the root systems frost damage and it will be easier to put protective fleece over if the weather is really severe. · Lift any dahlia tubers once their leaves are blackened by frost and store in a frost free environment. · Try your upmost to avoid stepping on your borders or fresh dug areas as this will do more harm than good, pushing out air between the soil particles and may cause waterlogging.

Beth from K9 Cuts - Spotlight on a flourishing local business I have always been keenly interested in dogs and my passion started from an early age. During my GCSE and A’ Levels I worked part time in kennels and gained experience in most aspects of animal care. In 1999 I started dog grooming, the same year that I became a schnauzer enthusiast. My first schnauzer, Ch Ruanco Regina Rex, AKA ‘Pepper Pot’ came into the family and I was bitten by the bug that slowly infected me, influencing my life and career. Pepper became my first show dog. Showing dogs has helped me to understand breeds and there individual grooming specifications. K9 cuts and its staff can offer not just a grooming service but as a customer you are secure in the knowledge that your dog is getting the best care possible & groomed to the highest standards. We work with dogs and their owners to get the best out of our service, spotting any possible health and behaviour problems, as they present themselves. Having your dog groomed is not always about a spruce up and smelling a little sweeter, for some breeds it is a necessity to stay clean, tidy and hygienic, to help in the affordability of regular visits to the groomers, we offer all our regular customers a discount scheme. Please ask if you qualify for the scheme and its terms and conditions.

To help introduce puppies to the

grooming experience we offer all Puppies under six months their FIRST puppy groom free! We highly recommend that as soon as your puppy has had its full vaccinations and can go into the big wide world you book him in for his first groom. We try and make every grooming experience fun and friendly, starting young helps imprint an enjoyable experience. Our staff hold qualifications in: NVQ level 2 Dog Grooming, NVQ Level 2 & 3 Animal Care and A1 Assessors qualification and we cater for the majority of breeds, shapes and sizes. TESTIMONIALS 25/09/2013 by Bearsmount - Beth and her team run second to none. Top groomers for those who want the best! Highly skilled, patient, knowledgeable and always offering sound advice to the discerning owner whether for the top end of the show ring or for the pet owner. Whichever, you require the best, well here it is! Travelling from the Channel Islands, the distance travelled reflects the great service and the super trim for my dog given at K9 cuts. I can only highly recommend the K9 cuts team to anyone seeking the cutting edge of grooming for their dog. Thank you to you all. 11/09/2013 by TrishPem10 - I have been taking my dogs to K9 cuts for 5yrs, my dogs are groomed to a very high standard and smell gorgeous when I collect them. I know my dogs are well cared for when I leave them and I wouldn't consider trusting my dogs with any other groomer 05/09/2013 by glamgoth17 - I have taken all my dogs to K9 cuts for many years now, and have always been extremely happy with the service received. Beth and her team have groomed my ling haired collie, my working springer spaniel (with the correct working cut for his breed and job) as well as bathing and pampering my Rottweiler. Beth is extremely knowledgeable about all breeds of dog, and is always happy to give the benefit of her qualified and experienced opinion. The team at K9 are all friendly, caring and dedicated, and all trained to a high standard. I would recommend K9Cuts Professional grooming services to anyone who cares for the happiness and wellbeing of their dog 05/09/2013 by StarGazerr - I have a siberian husky that I show and have to get her bathed a day or so before the show.
