Markham Miners Memorial…

Markham miners remembered with memorial unveiling 80 years after 1938 tragedy Seven new life-size steel figures have been unveiled as part of a memorial to miners who lost their lives at Markham Colliery nearly 80 years since the 1938 disaster at the site.

On 10 May 1938, 79 miners lost their lives and 40 were seriously injured in an explosion at Markham Colliery which has now been reclaimed by us and Henry Boot Developments and is home to the Markham Vale regeneration scheme.

The steel figures were unveiled as part of the ‘Walking Together’ memorial ‐ led by Derbyshire County Council ‐ which will eventually feature 106 figures stretching between the village of Duckmanton in Chesterfield and the former pithead.

Each figure is part of a walking trail which symbolises a miner’s journey to the pit and back home again and represents the 106 men who lost their lives in three accidents at the site.

On 21 January 1937 an underground explosion claimed the lives of nine men and 18 miners died and 11 others suffered serious injury in the third disaster at the colliery when the mechanical brake on a lift carrying them

to the coalface failed on 30 July 1973.

The most recent figures have been dedicated to Arthur Henson (45) who was employed at the colliery in the role known as a ripper, Herbert Hargreaves, contractor (48) and his two sons Herbert Hargreaves Jnr, contractor (27) and Leslie Hargreaves, contractor (23), Albert Ernest Rodgers, haulage hand (19), Robert Henry Wood, haulage hand (22) and Robert Simms, contractor (56).

There are now 34 figures at the site ‐ the first two were unveiled in 2013 to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1973 disaster.

The PPG met on Monday 15 th Jan. I informed the group that I had been invited to join a NHS England Patient & Public Reference Group. The group members will be taking part in group discussions, about 20 members, to share our experiences of general practice care.

There are to be three meetings throughout England with ours being in Leeds.

There will be discussions on how practices can best organise and meet the expectations and needs of patients in the changing world the NHS now finds itself in.The information gained from the groups will be fed into the review, and there will be further involvement later in the spring. We have also been accepted as part of the NAPP group of 100 Operating Framework.This is a group of 100 representatives fromPPGs that are NAPP members. We will be asked

for a quick response to targeted questions, with the aim that responses will give an indication of the views of some patients and PPGs. These responses will not form full research, but just give an indication to NAPP and others who commission the service.

Mr Andy Gregory has now left the Hardwick CCG, and we now have a new Accountable Officer for the whole of Derbyshire.

He is Dr Chris Clayton from Lancashire. Dr Clayton is now in charge of the four Derbyshire CCGs, and is currently based in Derby.

At the practice, Dr Anil Gill has left to join the Creswell practice.

Dr Animesh Jayawal will be staying with us for a bit longer to provide cover. Dr Kar is doing the odd session on Mondays to fill in for absence. Dr Oakley is due to return in April. We now have a temporary Care Coordinator, Helen Riley, who

The film starts in the mid-1970s with four year-old Tonya (Margot Robbie, Suicide Squad) being forced to skate by her mother (Allison Janney, The Help, Juno, Mom) through cruelty and neglect. As Tonya grows up, she rapidly becomes one of the best figure skaters in the United States after her mother takes her out of school to focus exclusively on her athletic career. She finally breaks free of her mother’s grasp and asserts her independence by marrying boyfriend Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan, Captain America).

Gillooly intermittently beats her and she has to contend with biases against her in the figure skating community for being deemed white trash. She ends up competing in the 1992 Winter Olympics but comes in a disappointing fourth place and returns to her hometown to waitress. She attempts a comeback and, in order to assist, Gillooly's friend Shawn Eckhardt takes it upon himself to arrange an attack on Harding's rival Nancy Kerrigan which rapidly escalates into the FBI arresting everyone for conspiracy. She is still

allowed to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics but comes in eighth place. She ends up on trial afterwards for her silence about the Kerrigan attack and part of her sentence involves being barred from competitive figure skating.

She resorts to foxy boxing and becoming a landscaper.

For those that don’t really know the story and imagine it was Harding wielding a bat that attacked Kerrigan, this film will clarify the key points of the event. Where she may not be 100% guilty, she isn’t completely innocent either. Was she driven to extreme measures because of her cruel upbringing or her violent husband?
