SHE LOOKS SO PERFECT 5SOS kicked off 2014 by announcing they were beginning their own record label – the infamous Hi or Hey Records – in partnership with their current label, Capitol Records. The band shared that fans helped pick the name Hi or Hey, which is a fan favorite saying following an awkward start to an interview years prior. After a few months in LA, spending time in the studio, 5SOS head back to London, where they announce their first single off their debut album – She Looks So Perfect (SLSP). The band then spent the next few weeks promoting SLSP in eight different cities across the U.K. and released both the lyric video and official music video for the iconic “underwear song.” But it wouldn’t be long before the band was back playing live shows in cities across the world. In February 2014, 5SOS announced its North American Stars, Stripes and Maple Syrup tour, which began in San Francisco and ended in Connecticut. Soon after the high of releasing She Looks So Perfect, which was climbing the charts across the world, Luke posted about writing Heartache On The Big Screen. He said, “We wrote Heartache On The Big Screen in the middle of nowhere in Watford UK with Mike Duce and Dan Lancaster. The song is basically about a bad relationship, but talking about it through the metaphor of a bad movie. It’s probably my favourite on the EP :-)”. The EP, featuring She Looks So Perfect, Heartache On The Big Screen, The Only Reason and Disconnected, was set to release in most countries on March 21, 2014.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN Much like most of 2013, 5SOS spent a lot of time on the road, playing shows in different cities every night. After releasing the SLSP EP, 5SOS announced that they would be joining One Direction for their Where We Are Tour in North America and Europe. However, before tour began, 5SOS endured a crazy and amazing 5 Countries 5 Days promo event where the band traveled from Sweden to Germany, France, Italy and Spain in just five days. Around this time, 5SOS also announced they would be heading back to Australia in May for a five-show tour called for the There’s No Place Like Home. While 5SOS were traveling around the world in April and May, they found out they were nominated for the #Band category at the Shorty Awards, an awards show honoring the best of social media. At this point, the band was growing in every way possible. At this time, they were also featured in RockSounds magazine and soon announced another new single, Don’t Stop. Release on June 16 through Capitol and Hi or Hey Records, Don’t Stop became an instant success (especially after the band scaled down the side of the building dressed as superheroes). Don’t Stop debuted in the number two spot on the U.K. Singles Chart after selling 80,002 copies in a week. But the band had yet to reach its peak. Finally, on May 13, 2014, 5SOS announced its debut album would finally arrive that summer. The name? 5 Seconds of Summer. This album would represent everything the band was at the time, so why not have it be self-titled?

DON’T STOP 5SOS were beginning to take over the U.S. as SLSP played on radio stations across the country, the band earned a feature in Kerrang! Magazine and they performed at the Billboard Music Awards. 5SOS had shared their high-budget music video for Don’t Stop, where each band member dressed as a superhero, trying to save others and do good deeds for people. Calum Hood is Cal-Pal, Ashton Irwin is SmAsh!, Michael Clifford is Mike-Ro-Wave and Luke Hemmings is Dr. Fluke. Currently, the music video has more than 87 million views on YouTube. At this point, 5SOS were being nominated for – and winning – awards left and right. On May 27, 5SOS was nominated for World’s Best Group, World’s Best Live Act, World’s Best Song with She Looks So Perfect and Wherever You Are, and World’s Best Video with She Looks So Perfect and Wherever You Are at the World Music Awards. The next day, they won Favorite Pop Group at the Most Played Songs Online Awards. On June 2, they were nominated for Best Artist From The World and Best New Artist, and the 5SOSFam were nominated for Sammontana Best Fans. And on June 12, 5SOS won the Best International Newcomer presented by Troxy at the Kerrang! Awards. In the summer of 2014, the band released the Don’t Stop EP, which included songs such as Don’t Stop, Rejects, Try Hard, Wrapped Around Your Finger and If You Don’t Know. Just one day after releasing the fan-favorite EP, 5SOS was nominated for International Video of the Year – Group for She Looks So Perfect at the iHeartRadio MMVAs.

SELF-TITLED Finally, while in the middle of the Where We Are Tour, one of the most important days in 5SOS’s arrived. On June 27, their debut studio album, 5 Seconds of Summer, was released in Europe and Australia by Capitol Records. However, several other countries had to wait another month before they received the band’s debut album. To kick off the month of July, which would prove to be a very epic, important month for 5 Seconds of Summer’s growing career, the boys made a huge announcement that they would be beginning their first major headline tour, the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour in Europe and the UK. In the announcement, they wrote, “’ROCK OUT WITH YOUR SOCKS OUT’ 2015 UK & EUROPEAN TOUR ! so pumped, this is such a huge deal for us, to come and see you all and even in new places we’ve never headlined before, and we can’t wait to have you come rock out with us :D” This was a major moment for the band, as it represented their first significant headlining tour. Understandably, this was a big deal for the fandom, and the response received proved that a headliner was just what the fandom had wanted.

AMNESIA On July 10, 2014, 5SOS announced that they had each been photographed for their own cover for the Rocksound Magazine. Excited, they took to Instagram on the band account in order to alert their fanbase of the magazine and link them to purchase their own copies. Additionally, at the very beginning of July, 5SOS were still touring with One Direction on the Where We Are Tour. On July 11, 2014, 5SOS played their last show of the European leg of the tour in Madrid, Spain, and would have a break from the tour before getting back into the grind the next month. Then, in mid-July, right before their debut album was available to the entire world, a major song in the boys’ career, Amnesia, was officially released. This stirred up the fandom greatly, and it eventually would become one of their most popular and wellrecognized songs, as many people within and out of the fandom able to tie the catchy tune back to the band. The morning before self-titled was released in the U.S., 5SOS appeared for an interview on the Elvis Duran Show, and they posted a clip of the interview to Instagram, getting an excited reaction from the fandom.

SELF-TITLED IN NORTH AMERICA Finally, on July 22, 5SOS’s first album, 5 Seconds of Summer, was officially released to the United States, which brought the album to a bigger audience, spreading it throughout the states and causing an uproar within their fanbase. Although it had been released for some time elsewhere, this was the day that the United States officially received the album. And to celebrate, 5SOS announced a one-off show they would be playing entitled “Live At The Forum” in Los Angeles, California. Later that month, the boys took to Instagram to announce an extension of the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour announcement, which would now include the United States of America and Canada. They officially announced that their first headline tour would extend into North America since, in the boys’ words, “We’ve literally had the most EPIC last few weeks of our lives here in the US… So today, we are really excited to announce that we are doing our very own headline tour around the USA & Canada next year !” Naturally, this heavily excited their fans, who scrambled to buy tickets to support their favorite band.

TAKING OVER THE WORLD In August, 5SOS played their first show of the North American leg of the Where We Are Tour in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Over the following months, the band was nominated for the following categories within the Teen Choice Awards: Choice Music - Break Up Song for Amnesia, Choice Music - Song by a Group for She Looks So Perfect, as well as Choice Music - Group as a band. Although they did not win those categories, they did not leave unsuccessful. The boys won in two of their nominated categories: Choice Music - Breakout Group and Choice Summer - Music Group. Additionally, 5SOS was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award, more popularly known as the VMAs. They were nominated for Artist to Watch with their song She Looks So Perfect. They did not win that category, but they did win Best Lyric Video with their video for “Don’t Stop.” They were able to successfully take home that award after that ceremony. The boys soon announced a show they would be playing, the House of Blues show in Los Angeles, California. In their words, the House of Blues is “such an epic venue” and that it would be “wicked to play such an intimate gig.” Evidently, this revealed that the boys have a love for playing shows where they can better interact with their audience and make it a personalized experience for the fans. Later, the band shared that they would be writing and releasing their very first book entitled “Hey, Let’s Make a Band!: The Official 5SOS Book.” They announced that the book could be preordered, saying that they made it as a thanks for everything their fanbase did for them and had always done for them.

2014

THE BEST YEAR YET Toward the end of 2014, 5SOS made it known just how thankful they were for their fans by announcing a convention designed for them to be able to meet and interact with fans on a more personal level, which they entitled Derp Con. This was held in Los Angeles, California, and fans would travel far and wide to attend their convention in order to hear them play songs and get to meet their favorite band. 5SOS also released the Amnesia EP featuring the title track, Daylight and a cover of American Idiot by Green Day. In October, 5SOS played their final show opening for One Direction. After two years on the road, it was time to say goodbye, and 5SOS was set up for years of success, having become experts at life on tour. Shortly after the Where We Are Tour ended, 5SOS released Good Girls and its music video (sweet lemonade, sweet, sweet lemonade). And just a few weeks later, the entire EP dropped, which gave fans access to Just Saying and acoustic covers of Long Way Home and Good Girls. During this time, 5SOS hosted Derp Con in LA, played two shows at the Forum in Inglewood, performed on Ellen, and won MTV Europe Music Awards, the Best New Artist Award at the AMAs, and were nominated for a slew of awards at the ARIAs. 5SOS had taken over the world not even six months after their first album was released. The band ended the year by releasing a live album from their show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. This album, LIVESOS, was the band’s first recorded and produced live album (they would follow it with Meet You There years later). 2014 was a year that changed the future of 5SOS. It exceeded all expectations of the band as they quickly became one of the most popular music groups in the world. 2014

MEET THE FANS Niamh B (@movingalong_nmb) Niamh has been a fan of 5SOS since February of 2020 after her friend made her a playlist featuring several of the band’s songs. She has not seen 5SOS yet, but she is hoping to attend the show in Leeds on the No Shame tour this year. Her favorite moment was when Calum bought tickets for fans. She thought it was very sweet and she really admired how he didn’t even hesitate to pay for them. She says that she cannot pick just one thing that she loves the most about 5SOS - she loves everything about them. Her favorite 5SOS song is Outer Space/Carry On. This song has helped her through a lot, and it is very meaningful to her. If she could tell the band anything, it would be, “Thank you so much for everything you have done. You’ve helped me get through some of my toughest times.”

MEET THE FANS Allison M (@cuddlelrh) Allison became a fan of 5SOS in mid-2019. Her sister introduced them to her, and Allison started to listen to the band more and more. She has not seen them live yet, but she is planning to attend the Atlanta show on the No Shame Tour. Her favorite 5SOS moment was when Youngblood reached number one on the Billboard charts. She said that it was such a beautiful moment because she knew how much of themselves they had poured into this album. For her, the best thing about the band is how kind and humble they are, despite all of their success. They are very supportive of their fans and always remind them of how valid they are. Allison’s favorite song is Ghost of You. She loves how beautiful yet how sad it is. It is a gorgeous song, and it really hits close to home for her. If she could tell 5SOS one thing, it would be, “Thank you for changing my life and for making me a better person every single day. I don’t think I could’ve done it without you. You mean the world to me.” The boys mean the entire world to her. No matter what happens, she will always be grateful that they came into her life.
