YOU SOUND LIKE YOU’RE FROM LONDON Come January 2013, 5SOS were officially living in London full-time. They lived in a flat together, made music together and paved the path for the band’s future during this time together. From posting video diaries on YouTube to keeping fans updated on Twitter, 5SOS showed the world their individual personalities, which made more people connect with them beyond just liking their music. On January 12, 2013, 5SOS reached 60,000 followers on Twitter. 5SOS moved to London to pursue new opportunities and grow their career. Just a month into their time as Londoners, the band announced its latest single – Heartbreak Girl. Who would’ve guessed this song would still be a fan favorite seven years later?

10 Years Of 5SOS

2013

TAKE ME HOME February was a time of exponential growth for 5SOS. On Valentine’s Day, it was announced that 5SOS would join One Direction on their Take Me Home Tour. The tour kicked off with two nights at the world-famous The O2 Arena in London, where 5SOS played to more than 20,000 fans each night. The band opened the show with Superhero, followed by the recently released Heartbreak Girl, fanfavorite Over and Over, a cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, and closed the set with their soon-to-be-released single, Try Hard. The beginning of 2013 was a time of rapid transformation for 5SOS. Their career skyrocketed as they accepted new opportunities and went out of their way to grow their fanbase. This time set the stage for the rest of the band’s career. April 2013, which was primarily spent on the road for the young band, brought about the conclusion of 5 Seconds of Summer’s time touring with One Direction on the Take Me Home tour, but only for the European leg, as they would later rejoin the band for shows in the U.S. Their last show on the European leg of the tour took place on April 20, 2013, in Manchester where they performed at the Manchester Arena, which they had performed at the previous day in the penultimate performance of that leg of the tour. After this, 5SOS would go their own way for a gap month before touring North America.

2013

NEW MUSIC May 2013 was a rather eventful month for 5 Seconds of Summer. Heartbreak Girl, one of their earliest songs, received one million views on YouTube very early in May. Achieving a successful start to the month, Luke, Ashton, Calum and Michael created a video on YouTube on May 3 entitled “Heartbreak Girl hits 1 Millions Views!!! :D” where they discussed and celebrated their song reaching that milestone thanking their listeners for getting them to that point. On May 10, 5SOS dropped several hints about filming a music video for their newest single – “Try Hard.” Luke posted a photo of the boys on Instagram, which was captioned, “had some rides to ourselves today, one of the best days :D.” The photo displayed the boys seated inside a ride at an amusement park, which later proved to be the setting for the soon-to-be-released Try Hard video.

PANTS DOWN TOUR The boys, motivated by their ever-growing audience and the new fanbase they were building, took to Twitter on May 17 to announce a short Australian tour. To publicize the tour, their tweet read, “we’re doing an AUSTRALIAN TOUR!!! it’s gonna be bad ass. tickets go on sale next monday at 5pm local time :D X” and attached a picture listing the dates of their tour. The name of this tour was “Pants Down Tour.” This national tour took place over five different days - five different shows - in the next month.

TRY HARD On June 1, the boys released their music video for “Try Hard,” which they had filmed the previous month. Since its release, the video, which featured entertaining footage of the boys at an amusement park, has amassed 52 million views on YouTube.

BACK TO AUSTRALIA Immediately following the Try Hard music video release, the boys returned home to Australia to perform their short, 5-performance “Pants Down Tour.” This tour took place from June 2 through 8, starting at the Metro Theatre in Sydney and going all the way to Astor in Perth. In between, they performed in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne. The tour was a full house tour, and tickets sold out everywhere within minutes of going on sale. While on their “Pants Down Tour,” on June 5, their song “Heartbreak Girl” was played on Radio Disney in the United States, representing a huge milestone for the band having their song air on the radio in the United States, a hotspot for musical success, exposing them to an even bigger audience. Following that, on June 6, they reached 10 million cumulative YouTube views. This represented the band’s success up to that point in time, showing how they were making a fanbase and gaining traction within their home country, as well as internationally, while touring with One Direction.

PARTY IN THE USA On June 13th, 5 Seconds of Summer rejoined One Direction on the North American leg of the Take Me Home Tour. The band flew through Dallas, Texas on their way to the first show in Sunrise, Florida. While on tour, 5SOS played songs like Lost Boy, Voodoo Doll, Heartbreak Girl, Out of My Limit, Try Hard, Teenage Dream and even Over and Over (which, to many fans’ disappointment, was never released and a studio version did not exist). While in Hershey Park, PA, the band took a group photo as a memory and posted on Twitter: “Hershey Stadium, it’s gonna get hot and sweaty :-)” On August 10, 5SOS performed their last North American Take Me Home Tour show in Los Angeles, CA. Days later, on August 24, they shared on Twitter a photo of Luke using a mandolin and recording something with the message: “5sos first :) recording mandolin!” Later, on September 19, 5SOS announced on Twitter that they started their band account on Instagram. The same month, on September 23, 5SOS released the Wherever You Are music video. It is a video that fans love because of all the band’s beautiful memories there are in it. As they put in the YouTube description: “we made this video just for YOU for a song we wrote called ‘Wherever You Are’. the video looks back on some of the memories we’ve shared with the 5SOS fam since it all started in 2011 :) x”. The same day, they performed the first Take Me Home Tour in Adelaide, Australia. Throughout the end of 2013, 5SOS continued to be successful in most everything it did, with the help of fans worldwide. For example, on October 8, just eight months after the release, the Heartbreak Girl music video reached five million views on YouTube. Later that month, Boston fans got Wherever You Are to be played on the radio! The guys tweeted out a photo of the fans along with saying, “the BOSTON #5SOSFAM got wherever you are played on the radio !! :D weww. <3”

END OF AN ERA After playing around 100 shows opening up for One Direction on their Take Me Home Tour all around the world, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, North America and New Zealand, the boys got to visit home and finish the tour in Australia. The last show took place on October 30 in Melbourne at the Rod Laver Arena. That night, Luke tweeted on the 5SOS account about closing the tour saying, “what a journey it has been, before the first and last show of the take me home tour :’) -lukey” along with a picture of their first Take Me Home show and a picture from their last show.

MEET KETCHUP Throughout 2013, 5SOS posted a ton of content on all of their social media platforms, although one of the best ways for fans to really get to know the band was through YouTube. On November 6, the guys posted a tour diary from Los Angeles on the platform. They tweeted this out for the fans to know, along with a picture of Calum dressed up as Captain America and Ketchup in a dog wash captioned: “still laughing that we gave ketchup a bath at a pet groomer back in la, rofl :D” with the link to the video.

CAPITOL RECORDS Finally, after a year of massive success and wrapping up the Take Me Home Tour, 5SOS signed on with the iconic Capitol Records, which would support their career for the following five years.

THE BEST HAS YET TO COME At this point, 5SOS was committed to making an album. They had just been on a 100-show tour and had yet to release a full-length record. Several of the songs fans heard during the Take Me Home and Pants Down tours would make it on the self-titled 5 Seconds of Summer album, but 5SOS wanted this debut record to be perfect. They spent days off and the months between the Take Me Home and the soon-to-be-announced Where We Are tours writing, recording and putting together a discography that fans would cherish more than half a decade after its release. But before self-titled came She Looks So Perfect.

MEET THE FANS Júlia R (@lietome_luke) Júlia first heard of 5SOS in 2014 but did not become a fan until March 2018. She found out about the band when one of her friends sent her the music video for She Looks So Perfect. Thanks to her friend, Júlia recognized the song several years later and has not been able to stop listening to their music since then. Júlia has seen the band during the Meet You There Tour in 2018 in Madrid and at Summertime Ball 2019 in London. She has many favorite 5SOS moments, but one that stands out was when Youngblood went number one on the Billboard charts. To thank the fans for their support, the band went live on Instagram and performed Lie to Me - Júlia thought it was such a beautiful moment. She also really loved when 5SOS released CALM and hosted a streaming party listening ritual with all of the fans and the band together at the same time. Júlia believes that the best thing about 5SOS is how close they are with the fans. As a fan, she thinks it is so beautiful how much they trust us and how they enjoy interacting with us. They are always so kind and humble, and she really appreciates that. Her favorite 5SOS song is Lie to Me. She fell in love with this song as soon as she heard it. Lie to Me means a lot to her, and although it is a heartbreaking song, it always makes her feel better. The song has such an indescribable power. If she could tell 5SOS one thing, it would be, “Thank you for being with me when I was lost, and for showing me that even though I don’t like them, changes aren’t bad sometimes. Thank you for helping me deal with my anxiety. Thank you for always being here. I love you so much - you’ve saved me.”

MEET THE FANS

Júlia is very grateful for 5SOS. They have really changed her life for the better. Because of them, she has done things that she’s pushed herself out of her comfort zone. They have given her the strength to challenge herself and provided the security that she has needed to know they are always with her. 5SOS makes her feel safe, and like she is never alone, they are her second home.
