THEN THERE WERE FOUR To kick off the new year, 5SOS posted a picture of the entire band saying, “and then there were 4.” Calum Hood, Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings and Ashton Irwin were officially 5 Seconds of Summer.

AN ONLINE SENSATION It didn’t take long for 5SOS to grow an international following. By posting YouTube covers of one of the world’s most popular bands at the time - One Direction - 5SOS quickly gained thousands of views on YouTube and followers on Twitter daily. On February 9, 2012, #5SecondsOfSummer trended on Twitter for the first time. At this point, the band was starting to feel the impact social media could have on their career. In Hey, Let’s Make a Band, Ashton said that “online fans were latching onto the four characters in the band,” which is completely true.

UNPLUGGED: THE FIRST EP 5SOS had been writing music since Michael, Calum and Luke were eating lunch together in the band room at school. They had several recording sessions and played songs like “Gotta Get Out” at the Annandale Hotel show. However, the band’s first EP release didn’t come until June 12, 2012, when the Unplugged EP dropped. Only four songs were featured - Gotta Get Out, I Miss You (Blink-182 cover), Too Late and Jasey Rae (All Time Low cover). 5SOS’s popularity began to skyrocket not only in Australia but internationally. The EP debuted at number three in the Australian iTunes charts and 10 in Sweden.

AS SEEN IN CONCERT Around this time, 5SOS hired their first manager - Adam Wilkinson. Adam had reached out over social media and the boys’ school but didn’t have any luck until he found a viable email address. He was the first person to propose that the band tour around Australia. On May 26, 2012, 5 Seconds Of Summer played at The Factory Theatre in Sydney, Australia. The boys played a short set opening with Conversations, covering Ed Sheeran’s Lego House and finished the set with a cover of Teenage Dirtbag. Then on May 27, the boys headed to Melbourne to perform another show at Xavier College in Mornington, Australia. They opened up with a cover of the Hot Chelle Rae song Tonight Tonight, followed by Heartbreak for Two, a cover of Teenage Dirtbag and closed the set with the song Everything I Want. Finally, on August 26, the band performed a 30-minute set at Hyde Park in Sydney. Fans got to see 5SOS perform songs such as Everything I Want, Jasey Rae, Gotta Get Out and As Long As You Love Me. The boys shared their excitement by tweeting on the @5SOS account the day before the show saying, “tomorrow 12pm at Hyde park we will be chillin with @levvis_ and playing some songs for half an hour :D #peacechickengreasenipples”

MAJOR MILESTONES As August 2012 rolled around, 5SOS really started to take off. Toward the end of the month, 5SOS joined the iconic Sydney-based radio station, Nova, for their first radio interview. On the 30th, Michael tweeted, “as long as you love me cover up on nova now!! #5SOSSmallzyAcoustic,” along with the link to the video of the cover. The following week, Nova posted another 5SOS video - an acoustic version of Gotta Get Out for Nova Acoustic. Not only was 5SOS growing in Sydney during this time, but they were also rapidly gaining attention online. On September 20, Michael announced that he was officially verified on Twitter! He shared his excitement about it by tweeting, “Twitter verified club!! :D lol x”

HOT CHELLE RAE TOUR On September 12, 5SOS took to social media to announce that they will be touring with Hot Chelle Rae. The band account tweeted “5SOS TOURING WITH HOT CHELLE RAE!! Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra & Melbourne in October <3 #5SOSwithHCR” along with a link to the boys lip-syncing and messing around to a sped-up version of Hot Chelle Rae’s song Tonight Tonight.

THE TWITTER EFFECT On November 6, Louis Tomlinson, a member of the band One Direction (who 5SOS covered months earlier), tweeted, “Been a fan of this band for a while, everyone get behind them,” with a link to the Gotta Get Out (Acoustic) video. Having support from a member of the world’s biggest band quickly propelled 5SOS into the spotlight. Later that month, Niall Horan also tweeted a link to 5SOS’s Out of My Limit music video. These two tweets completely altered the trajectory of 5 Seconds of Summer.

SOMEWHERE NEW In December 2012, 5SOS released their second EP, Somewhere New. The cover featured pictures of each band member in childhood bedrooms surrounded by posters of their favorite bands. This EP, which is still a favorite among fans today, marked an important moment in the band’s career because this was their first release with songs only written by 5SOS. Unpredictable, Out of My Limit, Beside You and Gotta Get Out were the four songs in this EP. Out of My Limit was the lead single, and the official music video for the song has garnered more than 15 million views since its release. The band also had a show at The Metro to launch the EP.

HEY, WE’RE TAKING ON THE WORLD While on their third Australian tour in 2012, 5SOS’s manager sat them down at a diner in Adelaide and said, “One Direction are looking for a support for next year...They want you!” Although this was an opportunity of a lifetime, 5SOS had some concerns before accepting the offer. Playing to tens of thousands of fans rather than 2,000 would be an adjustment. Then their music was quite different from One Direction’s what if fans didn’t like it? Those fears were set aside as 5SOS accepted the opening role and hired new management to best prepare them for life on the road (and beyond). This management team, Modest!, recommended the boys move to London. It was a daunting move - no one in the band was even 18 yet - but in the end, it was the right move.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT At the end of 2012, 5SOS could look back and see just how much they accomplished - two EP releases, three Australian tours, several one-off shows and growing a massive online following. However, looking forward to 2013, the band would have the opportunity to write with some of the world’s most famous songwriters and even embark on their first worldwide tour. Everything the boys had experienced to date - growing up in the suburbs of Sydney, meeting in school or at a party, the Annandale Hotel show, posting covers on YouTube, touring around Australia - would set them up for success for years to come.

MEET THE FANS Kaylee D (@kaylftv) Kaylee first became a fan of 5SOS in March of 2012 after she and her cousin discovered their cover of “Teenage Dirtbag” on Facebook. In 2018, Kaylee attended her first 5SOS concert (and first concert ever) when she saw the band in Holmdel, NJ. When thinking back on her time as a fan, Kaylee said she misses 5SOS’ old keeks and their 5SOS vs. Food videos. She says that the best thing about 5SOS is their personalities. They are still goofy and are always making jokes. They are not stuck up like other celebrities. You can definitely tell they genuinely love what they do and they love interacting with their fans. Her favorite songs are Jet Black Heart and Story of Another Us. If she could tell 5SOS anything right now, it would be, “Thank you for being there for me during my darkest times and encouraging me to keep going. If they hadn’t fought their demons for us, I don’t know if I would have been able to fight my own.” She says that she loves them so very much! She discovered them when she was just seven years old, so she has grown up with their music. 5SOS have been her idols for a while, and she is so grateful that they are still making music and being amazing.

MEET THE FANS Katia W (@katiaw2) Katia first became a fan of 5SOS in 2014 after hearing Amnesia and She Looks So Perfect on the radio. Later that year, the band came to her city with One Direction for the Where We Are Tour in San Antonio. In the time since, Katia has seen 5SOS a few times, including in Houston during the 2018 5SOS III Tour, Meet You There Tour Sugarland in 2018 and during the World War Joy Tour in 2019 in Austin. Katia looks forward to seeing the band in the Woodlands, Irving and Concord during the No Shame Tour. Looking back at the past seven years since she became a fan, Katia said her favorite 5SOS moment was when Youngblood went number one on the U.S. Billboard charts. She also really loved the CALM listening ritual night the evening the album dropped. Katia believes the best thing about 5SOS is the way that they love their fans and how they always want to put out the best material for fans instead of just music that they feel will chart well. Her all-time favorite 5SOS song will always be Wherever You Are. If she could tell 5SOS one thing, it would be, “thank you for always putting a smile on my face and for being the reason I met my best friend and so many other people. She hopes that they are all doing well and know how loved they are.
